Byard LancasterComplete Palm Recordings 1973/1974 (Us/Mother Africa/Exactement/Funny Funky Rib Crib/Love Always) (7LP set) ... LP
Palm/Souffle Continu (France), Early 1970s. New Copy ... $159.99 169.99 About October 25, 2024 (delayed)
A massive set of music – and one that includes all the rare Palm label recordings made by reedman Byard Lancaster in Paris during the 70s! First up is Us – a set that features a really freewheeling trio brought together under the leadership of reedman Byard Lancaster – a group that features the great AACM drummer Steve McCall, who you'll know from his work in another trio, Air – and bassist Sylvain Marc, who plays an electric version of his instrument on the set! There's a very strong AACM vibe to the music – a balance between personal, spiritual moments – and others that have the trio really taking off, especially when McCall really kicks it up on drums – a performance that really seems to show the versatility of Lancaster, as he blows beautifully on alto, tenor, and flute. Both McCall and Byard have some great solo moments – and the title track actually gets a bit funky too, in sort of an early Joe McPhee mode! Titles include "Just Test", "Us", "John III", "Flore", and "McCall All". Next is Mother Africa – one of the boldest statements ever made by reedman Byard Lancaster – a really freewheeling live set recorded in Paris, and done with the hard-burning energy that marked some of the classic late 60s sessions for BYG! Lancaster's key musical partner here is trumpeter Clint Jackson III, who's equally on fire here – effortlessly moving next to Byard as the pair chop up sound and space while spinning out these really amazing improvisations – in the company of Jean-Francois Catoire on both acoustic and electric bass, Keno Speller on percussion, and Jonathan Dickinson. And while the album definitely resonates with the very free jazz in Paris in 1969, it also has some moments of structure that really balance things out as well – almost working as a bridge to the loft jazz scene, especially with some of the spiritual currents that Byard brings to the music. Titles include "We The Blessed" and "Mother Africa". The album Exactement features some of the most beautiful, most introspective music ever recorded by the great Byard Lancaster – a set that brings his work on reeds and piano into play with the percussion of Keno Speller! Lancaster is clearly the driving force here – there are a lot of fantastic solo passages, many with a more tuneful sense of structure than some of Byard's freer work – and his work on piano, flute, bass clarinet, and soprano sax is stunning throughout – augmented by Speller in just the right ways! One track uses an octavoice to create a really wonderful sound – almost a more spiritual take on territory explored by Eddie Harris – and the double-length set is overflowing with brilliance, with tracks that include "Keno Exactement", "Virginia", "Dr Oliver W Lancaster", "Palm Sunday", "C Marianne Alicia", and "Providence Baptist Church". Funny Funky Rib Crib is a rare French session from American reedman Byard Lancaster – and easily one of his funkiest albums ever! The set's got a hip mix of avant jazz and groovier rhythms – bits of guitar and keyboards alongside sharper reeds and percussion – all in a way that's a bit like some of the funky French work cut by Hal Singer! Byard's still as progressive as ever, but focused more on the groove than before – not in a commercial way, but in a style that pushes his music strongly forward to the people. Lancaster plays mostly sax, but also a bit of flute and piano, and even vocalizes on one cut too – and other players include Francois Nyombo on guitar, Francois Tusques on electric piano, Clint Jackson on trumpet, Joseph Traindl on trombone, Del Rabenja on tenor, and both Marc Sylvain and Steve McCall on drums. Titles include "Rib Crib (parts 1 & 2)", "Dogtown", "Loving Kindness", "Work & Pray", and "Just Test". The set also features the rare extended track "Love Always" – originally for the sessions that created Mother Africa. LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1963. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A 60s rock and roll soundtrack, but one that's also a cut above the usual mixed-bag bunch – thanks to a nicely cohesive set of charts from arranger Frank Perkins! About half the tracks here are by Frank – and they're nicely groovy instrumentals that have a jot of jerk and twist rhythms beneath the bigger horns – which are then offset by some surprisingly decent vocal numbers that balance out the record and give it a nice depth. Instrumental tunes include "Palm Springs Scramble", "Go Go Devil", "Palm Canyon Bossa Nova", and "Prescription For Recovery" – and vocal tracks include "What Will I Tell Him" by Connie Stevens, "Live Young" by Troy Donahue, "Ox Driver" by Modern Folk Quartet, and "A Little Bit Of Give" by Robert Conrad. Palm/Souffle Continu (France), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Easily our favorite album by Baikida Carroll – a wonderfully spiritual session cut in Paris, and done with this open-ended, spacious sound that seems to bring AACM improvisation into play with some of the global currents that were happening overseas at the time! As on an AACM date, most players handle a fair bit of instruments – Carroll on trumpet, flugelhorn, seal horn, and percussion; Oliver Lake on soprano, alto, tenor, flute, and percussion too; and the great Nana Vasconcelos on lots more percussion – including cuica, tablas, timbales, bells, and more as well! Manuel Villardel plays both acoustic and electric piano – and the tunes build through these great improvisations between the horns and percussion, often with long, cyclical styles that are completely hypnotic! Titles include the modal groover "Forest Scorpion" – plus "Orange Fish Tears", "Rue Roger", and "Porte D'Orleans". LP, Vinyl record album

Khan JamalGive The Vibes Some ... LP
Palm/SeriE.WOC (France), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $50.99 59.99
Maybe the hippest record ever cut by vibist Khan Jamal – and that's saying a lot, as all of his records are pretty darn hip! This rare date was originally done for the French Palm Records label run by avant jazz giant Jef Gilson – and the approach is very loose and free, but also not totally free jazz either – and there's a very spiritual current running through the music, which has a very unique trio format that features Jamal on vibes and marimba, next to the drums of Hassan Rashid and the trumpet of Clint Jackson – maybe the only grouping of these three instruments we've ever heard on record! The open space of the album allows all three players to really shine – and the trumpet gets in as many wonderful solos as the vibes – almost with the feel of a shared leadership session. Titles include "Clint", "35,007 Feet Up", "Give The Vibes Some", and "Pure Energy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful pressing – with a heavy insert that comes along with the vinyl and cover!)

One of the most obscure albums issued on the Palm Records label of French jazz genius Jef Gilson – a large ensemble session that ties together both spiritual and avant styles of the early 70s, and which really demonstrates the overlooked power of the French scene at the time! The group's led by Chilean pianist Manuel Villarroel which might explain the title reference – and the lineup is filled with a range of excellent and obscure French musicians – including Jean Quarlier, Hugh Levick, Jef Sicard, and Gerard Coppere on reeds – plus Alain Brunet and JF Cannape on trumpets, Alphonse Leboucher and Josef Traindl on trombones, and Keno Speller, Claudio Bertoni, and Ana-Maria Villarroel on percussion. The tunes are as loose and open as the free jazz material recorded by BYG/Actuel a few years before – but also have more inherent structure and soul, and a really great balance between the contributions of the individual members as they space out the sound nicely. Titles include "Bolerito", "Leyendas De Nahuelbuta", and "Quetzalcoatl". CD

One of those really magical records from the French scene of the 70s – a record that's instantly beyond easy labels or categorization, and which is in a very special space within the mind of drummer Jacques Thollot! Thollot created some pretty amazing improv sessions in the years before this album, but the style here is very different – short tunes that are filled with new ideas and all sorts of imaginative elements – often quite tuneful in these offbeat ways, like a composition by Moondog – sometimes more improvised – and served up on creative instrumentation from a core trio that has Thollot on drums, piano, and electronics – with Jean Francois Jenny Clark on bass, and Francois Jenneau on tenor, flute, and electronics too. None of the players sound here as they do on other records at the time – and the title track also features guest work from singer Charline Scott and a string quartet too. Titles include "Watch Devil Go", "Up Down", "Kanephoros", "Go Mind", "In Extenso", "Eleven", "Le Ciel Manque De Genealogie", "Au Stylo Fuetre Un Paysage", and "Before In". CD

The "Lo" in the title here is Immy Owusu's way of hinting at a lo-fi approach on the record – a sound that mixes older West African influences with a more personal, down to earth approach – one that really lets Immy's vocals come across wonderfully – almost more like a soul album, given how upfront they are in the mix – a style that's different than an older singer buried amidst a larger ensemble sound! And yet there's also a decently-sized group on the record too – guitar, keyboards, percussion, and backing vocals alongside Owusu's lead work on guitar and vocals – intimate, yet rich – and with a sound that's such a nice change from records that try for a more slavish vintage sound. ✨✧ Nick DrakeFive Leaves Left ... LP
Island, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Godlike work from the legendary Nick Drake – and exactly the kind of record that's made him a continuing legend over the years! The style is completely its own – not really folk or rock, but not really jazz either – yet served up with plenty of jazzy phrasing that's helped keep Drake's music fresher than most as the decades move on – and which makes each song here a really rich discovery – even if, like us, you've heard the album hundreds of times in the past! The production is wonderful – with slight underscorings of strings that help unlock dark corners of the songs – and tracks include the classic "River Man" – easily one of Nick's best songs ever – plus "Fruit Tree", "Day Is Done", "Three Hours", "Saturday Sun", and "Time Has Told Me". A record we'd never part with – ever! LP, Vinyl record album

The cover image is a great hint at the vibe of this gem of a record from London's Ezra Collective – but as with most of their music, there's a lot more going on than you might expect – certainly not a straight dance record, although the album's overflowing with really wonderful rhythms! The blend of soul, jazz, and other elements is fantastic – really pushing forward all the energy that's made the group so great, right from the start – and the core lineup features Joe Armon-Jones on keyboards, James Mollison on tenor, Ife Ogunjobi on trumpet, TJ Koleoso on bass, and Femi Koleoso on drums – the last two of whom really drive the music in a wonderful way! There's some vocal guests on the set too – including Yazmin Lacey, Olivia Dean, and Moonchild Sanelly – but most of the set is instrumental. Titles include "Palm Wine", "Hear My Cry", "No One's Watching Me", "God Gave Me Feet For Dancing", "The Traveler", "Shaking Body", "Streets Is Calling", and "The Herald". 2CD edition comes with four bonus tracks – instrumental versions of "No One's Watching Me" and "Streets Is Calling" – and live versions of "Ajala" and "Little Things". Killer electric work from Herbie Hancock – right on par with his groundbreaking Headhunters set, but a bit spacier too! The album features a Headhunters-solid lineup – with Bennie Maupin on saxes, Paul Jackson on bass, Mike Clark on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – all grooving wonderfully with Herbie on a set of super-long tracks! Hancock himself handles a host of incredible keyboards – Fender Rhodes, clavinet, Arp, and lots more – all in a lean electric style that still sounds as fresh today as it did way back in the mid 70s – perhaps even more so, given the return to this sort of basic groove that has happened in recent years! Fantasy, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great assortment of tracks from these Woody Herman offshoots – one date recorded in Paris, the other back home in California! First up is The Herdsmen Play Paris – a set done overseas by a group that includes Ralph Burns on piano, Dick Collins on trumpet, Cy Touff on bass trumpet, Jerry Coker and Bill Perkins on tenor, Dick Hafer on alto, and rhythm from French players who include Henri Renaud on piano, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, and Jean Louis Viale on drums! There's an open, flowing quality to the work that's great – a bit more of a relaxed vibe than the Woody Herman sound, with lots of nice Parisian postwar touches in the way the tunes are put together. Titles include "The Gypsy", "Wet Back On The Left Bank", "Embarkation", "Just 40 Bars", "Pot Luck", and "Palm Cafe". The second half of the CD features material from the Nat Pierce/Dick Collins Nonet album on Fantasy – recorded earlier in 1954 at the Marine's Memorial Auditorium in San Francisco. The group's a nonet, with Pierce on piano, Collins on trumpet, Jerry Coker on tenor, Jack Nimitz on baritone, John Howell on trumpet, and Cy Touff on bass trumpet – that great low-toned instrument that really adds a nice bottom to this date. Titles include "I'll Never Be The Same", "Drop The Other Shoe", "Some of These Days", "Easy Living", "Blue Lester", and "The King". CD

Great grooves in the classic popcorn soul mode – a special blend of R&B, jazz vocals, early soul, and outright pop – served up on tracks that have a really wonderful groove at the bottom! The popcorn sound is a midtempo stepping one – not as upbeat as Northern Soul, and often with a nice sort of slink in the groove, which lets in jazzier flourishes on the instrumentation, and some occasional Latin touches as well! DJ Jay Strongman's been spinning the music for years – and he's come up with a great selection of tracks that definitely fit the mode – a few familiar numbers, and lots more rare ones – titles that include "So What" by Ray Rush, "The Big Change" by Anna King, "Heartbreak Society" by The Radiants, "River Love" by Hillard Street, "That's Why I Cry" by Varetta Dillard, "I'll Be There" by Damita Jo, "Dreams Never Hurt Nobody" by Jesse James, "A Tear" by Patsie Slater, "Tell Him" by The Gainors, "I Should Have Loved You" by The Sierras, "How Much Land" by Frank Minion, "In The Palm Of Your Hand" by Dolly Lyon, "Now I Lay Me Down To Weep" by Simone Dina, and "You Got Me Crazy" by Lew Conetta. ✨✧ VariousTechnicolor Paradise – Rhum Rhapsodies & Other Delights (3CD set) ... CD
Numero, Late 1950s/Early 1960s. Used 3 CD ... Out Of Stock
An insane new chapter in the mighty legacy of the Numero Group – not the rare soul, obscure psych, or underground folk the label has covered with other releases – but instead a huge batch of under-discovered gems from the exotica scene of the postwar years – essentially the farther reaches of the bigger scene that had stars like Martin Denny and Les Baxter in the spotlight! In case you're not hip, the exotica groove is kind of a hipper take on the Pacific Islands sounds – not mainstream Hawaiian music, but instead usually small combo material that has lots of percussion mixed with electric instrumentation, either on guitar or keyboards – set to imagined themes of life in the south seas, often in a very cool mix of jazz and dreamy modes. The music here is every bit as well-researched and deeply-dug as that on other Numero compilations – and it's fascinating to hear just how many folks were influenced by the huge exotic movement of the late 50s – and were motivated to turn out their own takes on the music, sometimes with styles that rivaled that of the big records of the time – sometimes with very weird and offbeat modes that are even more striking! As always with Numero, the presentation is superb – a huge set of notes with an equally large amount of music – all served up in a mighty handsome package, with work by Bill & Jean Bradway, The Shelltones, The Voodoos, The Jaguars, Jerry & The Catalinas, The Gems, The Blazers, Chayns, The Palatons, Red Harrison & His Zodiacs, The Melody Mates, The Monzas, Carmen, Darla Hood, The Baton Of Andre Brummer, Joan Joyce Trio, The Castiles, The Potted Palm, Don Sargent & His Buddies, Clyde Derby, Chico Jose, Arnie Derksen & Chise, The Slaves, Bruce Norman Quintet, and many more. Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". CD

Gone/Descarga (UK), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare killer! Charlie Palmieri cut this album for the mostly-R&B Gone label in the years before moving onto straight Latin labels – and the session's a rare treat with a very unique sound! Charlie is out front on piano, and the overall sound is straight Latin jazz, with lots of firey piano work, in a manner that you don't always get on some of Charlie's other albums. Johnny Pacheco plays bongos and conga, and the whole thing cooks nicely – with some very strange arrangements and odd percussion at times – making for a set that's both off-kilter, but nicely stripped down and grooving! Titles include "Ponce", "Cuban Love Song", "Take Me In Your Arms", "Pavanne", and "I'll Never Be The Same". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Eddie Palmieri's greatest albums of the 60s – a landmark not just for his career, but for Latin jazz in general! The record features a very prominent electric bass – which kicks up the groove a lot more than on some of Eddie's earlier records, and almost gives the set a Latin Soul feel. Eddie's piano is loose and free – with lots of lyrical touches that seem to be picked up from his records with Cal Tjader – and the group features Cachao on bass, and Cynthia Ellis on lead vocals on a few cuts. The coolest of these is the very groovy boogaloo cut "The African Twist". Other cuts include "Palo De Mango", "Delirio", "Ay Que Rico", and "Busca Lo Tuyo". CD

A seminal bit of 70s Latin from Eddie Palmieri – a rull, rich session that really earns its "sun" title! Eddie's working here in that complicated approach to jazzy rhythms from the later Tico years – inflected by a bit of straighter salsa rhythms – in a style that proved that it never hurt to put a bit of intellectual approach in the grooves! The album's got one wonderful standout track in the 14 minute long "Una Dia Bonita" – a massively complex number that initially features some really dark, spare piano – but then has Eddie stretching out a highly progressive groove. A fantastic 70s session from Charlie Palmieri – featuring some of his best keyboard solos of the decade, and some very cool work on organ that almost makes us think Sun Ra is in the group! The style is quite unusual, even for Charlie – with a weird sound from his organ that really gives the record an edge – played alongside straighter piano lines, heavy percussion, and lots of warm horn work overall. Charlie's organ really stands out best on the descarga cut "No Esta En Na" and the groovy midtempo "Estoy Friza'o" – but the whole thing's great, and other cuts include "Comelon Hustle", "King Charles", "Dame Tu Corazon", and "Sobando El Piano Merengue". Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Charlie Palmieri's best records from the 60s! The session is an obscure one-off done for Atlantic in 1968 – and for some reason, the record was never issued as widely as some of Charlie's other sides for smaller labels during the time, making it one of the most hard-to-find chapters of his career. The tracks are played by a tight little Latin jazz combo – with Charlie on piano, Julian Priester on trombone, and Louis Ramirez on timbales – and the set is filled with some great original tunes that mix together boogaloo rhythms and straight ahead Latin jazz. Tracks include "Bugalu", "Mambo Show", "Panama's Boogaloo", and "Bitter Sweet" – plus a Latin soul instrumental reading of "Up Tight". LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzy goodness from Eddie Palmieri – a recent set that shows him still burning strong after a stunning 50 years in Latin music! Tico, 1971. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant 70s work by Eddie Palmieri – easily one of his greatest records of the decade! The album features Eddie really showing off his jazz chops on a number of longer tracks – tunes that bring together some of the spirit forged during the Harlem River Drive era, with some of the more descarga-driven styles of his Coco albums. Eddie plays both electric and acoustic piano on the session – and the group is small and tight, with a sound that really compresses the energy of the grooves on the album! One that we'd recommend in a minute, with great tracks that include "Vamanos Pa'l Monte", "Viejo Socarron", "Comparasa De Los Locos", and the excellent "Revolt/La Libertad Logico". ✨✧ Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Charlie PalmieriEl Fantastico ... LP
Tropical/Seeco, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful early work from Charlie Palmieri – featuring 10 jazzy mambos with really heavy work on piano! The set's a refreshing change from some of Charlie's charanga sides from the time – and has a groove that's sparer, more stripped-down, and a lot more percussive. Plus, Charlie's work on keys is right out in the forefront – grooving hard like Joe Loco or Eddie Cano, with lots of complicated jazzy phrasing. Titles include "A Veces Soy Feliz", "Lover's Mambo", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Noche Y Dia", and "Lullaby Of Broadway". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charlie PalmieriGiant Step ... LP
Tropical Buddah, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Instrumental Latin from Charlie Palmieri – an indie set from the 80s, but one that almost has the classic feel of some of his first few albums at the end of the 50s! The approach here is similar to those – especially Charlie's work for United Artists – a jazz-inflected approach that has plenty of piano in the lead, supported by bass, timbales, bongos, and congas! Larry's groove is traditional, but also shows some of the freedoms that crept into Latin piano work during the 60s and 70s – and as an added plus, most of these tracks are much longer than in the old days – offering plenty of space for improvisation on the solos! Titles include "Rhumba Rhapsody", "Start The World I Want To Get On", "Mis Amigos EGC", "Adios", "Bajo Los Sombras De Un Pino", and "Muneca". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charlie PalmieriHeavyweight ... LP
Fania, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Massive work – one of Charlie's best albums of the 70s! The album's a straight salsa set, but it's done with a truly pummeling level of energy that kicks in from the first note – really blasting in with some strong statements by the band, then letting loose on longer tracks than usual, all of which have Charlie's jazzy touch firmly in place! Arrangements are all wonderful – done by Charlie, Roy Roman, and Bobby Valentin – and vocals are by Menique and Julito Villot. Includes the instrumental track "Melodica In F" – which features Charlie playing some very weird melodica – plus "Arroz Con Bacalao", "Tiene Sabor", "Consuelate", and "No Puedo Mas". ✨✧ Charlie Palmieri & His Charanga La DuboneyViva Palmieri ... LP
Alegre, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An album with a fantastic-looking cover – and one with a fantastic-sounding vibe as well – early work from Latin piano great Charlie Palmieri, recorded at a time when he seemed to be working equally strongly in both Latin music and jazz! Charlie's working here with his excellent La Duboney charanga – in a groove that definitely shows the instrumental makeup of that style, with some especially nice flute solos and violin bits – but which also displays some of the modern jazz elements that Charlie had been bringing to his other work of the period. The piano and percussion are fantastic – and titles include "Lo Dicen Todos", "Oh Cara", "Buchi Pluma Na Na", "Galletana", and "Oh Oh Oh Oh Eh Ah"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charlie Palmieri Y Su OrquestaVuelve El Gigante ... LP
Alegre, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A hard to find Charlie Palmieri album from the early 70's – released on Alegre, and with a crack set of arrangements by Charlie, Sonny Bravo, and Tito Puente. The tracks are all fairly short – except for the long take on Arsenio Rodriguez' "El Guaya Catalina" – but as usual, Charlie manages to pack a lot of power into them, and earns again the title of "el gigante" of Latin bandleaders. Other tracks include "Depierta Julian", "Panache", "Chocolate", and "Arroz Con Pollo". LP, Vinyl record album
