✨✧ Palm UnitHommage A Jef Gilson ... LP
Super Sonic Jazz (Netherlands), 2018. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful tribute to pianist Jef Gilson – one of the hippest French jazz talents of the 60s and 70s – put together by a combo who take their name from his legendary Palm Records label! The group here are a quartet, and they work with wonderfully moody use of Hohner electric piano by Fred Escoffier, plus a bit of Farfisa and Hammond – of which are used spaciously, over rhythms that often move a lot more fiercely – with a third element created from the soulful tenor work of Lionel Martin – a saxophonist who really gets the spirit of the older Palm Records releases right! Actually, the whole group gets the spirit right – working here with a knowledge of the freer corners of jazz, but never going to that space – and instead hanging back in this spiritual blend of global currents, but all with a sensibility that's really unique. The mixture of tenor and harder electric piano lines is already great enough – but the loose rhythms at the core are what really send things home – on titles that include the Jef Gilson compositions "Mother Africa", "Chant Inca", "Chakan", "Mode De Fa", "Newport Bounce", and "Ouverture Jazz Pour San Remo" – plus a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still in the heavy stickered outer sleeve.)

Avishai CohenCross My Palm With Silver ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2017. Used ... $11.99
Dark-tinged sounds from trumpeter Avishai Cohen – a set that draws as much from his contributions as it does from the moody piano of Yonathan Avishai – whose sense of spacing and tone really seems to match the overall musical vision of Cohen! Most tracks unfold at a very contemplative pace – drawing from the careful bass of Barak Mori and drums of Nasheet Waits – with a somewhat poetic approach to the melody, but never in any sort of light, lyrical way. The song titles may well give a hint as to the vibe of the set – and tunes include "Will I Die Miss Will I Die", "Shoot Me In The Leg", "50 Years & Counting", and "340 Down". CD

✨✧ VariousLondon Is The Place For Me Vols 7 & 8 – Calypso, Palm Wine, Mento, Joropo, Steel, & Stringband/Lord Kitchener In England 1948 to 1962 ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A great double header from Honest Jons – a 2CD set that brings together volumes 7 and 8 of their London Is The Place For Me series! Volume 7 is first – a fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Volume 8 features a huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Titles include "No More Taxi", "Food From The West Indies", "Come Back In The Morning", "Pirates Of Paria", "Drink A Rum", "If You Brown", "Life Begins At Forty", "Mistress Jacob", "Africa My Home", "Kitch In The Jungle", "Tie Tongue Mopsie", and "London Is The Place For Me". One of the coolest albums on the rare Palm label of pianist Jef Gilson – a set that's got even more global instrumental currents than some of the other releases on the imprint during it's too-short run! The group is headed here by bassist Sylvin Marc, who also plays drums and percussion – and Madagascar musician Del Rabenja, who plays the Valiha – a cool bamboo harp-like instrument that dominates the first half of the record, before Del switches over to tenor sax and Fender Rhodes – handled with equally great energy! The rest of the group features more bass, drums, and percussion – working in an earthy groove that's occasionally topped by these vocalizations that really give the music some depth and a strongly collaborative vibe throughout. A groundbreaking project from French pianist Jef Gilson – an artist who'd already made some incredible records in the 60s, but really knocked it out of the park here – by collaborating with a host of musicians from Madagascar! The set mixes Gilson's strong ear for arrangement with these wonderful twists and turns in both the rhythms, and in the phrasing of the horns – a lineup that includes Georges Rahoerson on soprano sax, Roland De Comarmond on baritone, Alain Razafinohatra on alto, and Serge Rahoerson and Joel Rakotomamonjyh on tenors – working alongside Gilson on piano and some balafon-like use of xylophone! The tracks are filled with modal changes – moving even more strongly when the group brings in some added percussion – and on one track, Gilson plays some very cool Hohner electric piano too. Titles include a remake of "The Creator Has A Master Plan" – plus "Avaradoha", "Chant Inca", "Sodina", and "Malagasy". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe the most fully-formed album we've ever heard from Orgone – a set that has the group emerging as a larger funk ensemble, and opening the door to a host of guest singers as well! There's a quality here that's more strongly soul-based than we'd have guessed from the group at their start – thoughtful tunes that flow with lyrical contributions that make them sparkle even more than they might with just the group's excellent funky instrumentation. Features work from Woolfy, Jamie Allensworth, Adryon De Leon, Eric Kufs, and others – on titles that include "Loveback", "Concentration", "Calling On You", "Lost U", "High & Low", and "Show Me". Eden AhbezEden's Island & Beyond ... CD
Jasmine (UK), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A wonderful collection – one that features the legendary album by Eden Ahbez, plus other tracks that show his influence on postwar music! First up is the core Eden's Island set – an incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". CD then features 16 more bonus tracks – all compositions by Eden and work that shows others taking up his helm – titles that include "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony, "Wine Women & Gold" by The Carsons, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, "Frankie's Song" by Anita Ray, "Let Me Hear You Say I Love You" by Vicki Young, "End Of Desire" by April Stevens, "Sahara" by Bob Romeo & The Jungle Sextet, and "Song Of The Fool" by The Crew Cuts. Jef GilsonLe Massacre Du Printemps ... LP
Futura/Souffle Continu (France), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
One of the most striking albums ever from French experimentalist Jef Gilson – and one of the most outside as well! The album's from the same vintage as some of Gilson's world jazz experiments on the Palm label, but the overall feel here is much more free – with Jef working on a fuzzy Electra Hohner piano, which sounds very stark and trippy – alongside organ from Pierre Moret and drums from Jean Claude Pourtier – as well as other instrumentation from all three members of the trio! There's lots of percussion and extra elements that come into the mix – creating an organic feel that's different than other freer jazz work of the time – and Gilson's use of the electric keyboard is strongly resonant, with bold sounds that never overlap – but hang in the air nicely amidst the percussion. Claude Jeanmarie also plays prepared piano on one track – and titles include "Les Cigales", "Faut Qu'on", "Tournant Decisif", and "Le Massacre Du Printemps". LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie HancockThrust ... CD
Columbia, 1974. New Copy ... $5.99 6.99
Killer electric work from Herbie Hancock – right on par with his groundbreaking Headhunters set, but a bit spacier too! The album features a Headhunters-solid lineup – with Bennie Maupin on saxes, Paul Jackson on bass, Mike Clark on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – all grooving wonderfully with Herbie on a set of super-long tracks! Hancock himself handles a host of incredible keyboards – Fender Rhodes, clavinet, Arp, and lots more – all in a lean electric style that still sounds as fresh today as it did way back in the mid 70s – perhaps even more so, given the return to this sort of basic groove that has happened in recent years! Tracks are long, tight, and super funky – and titles include "Actual Proof", "Palm Grease", "Spank-A-Lee", and "Butterfly". CD

✨✧ Eden Ahbez & OthersWild Boy – The Lost Songs Of Eden Ahbez ... CD
Ebalunga (Austria), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the untapped musical legacy of Eden Ahbez – the west coast mystic who's best remembered for delivering the song "Nature Boy" to Nat King Cole (legendarily walking in barefooted during a recording session!) – but who also made a range of other great music in the years that followed! Apart from "Nature Boy", and Ahbez's rare Eden's Island album from 1960, most of his other songs have fallen in in the shifting sands of time – but this record does a great job of digging up the best of the bunch, and presents them in a well-documented package that's much better than some of the public domain Eden Ahbez records that have hit the market. Song songs are by Eden, in a range of exotic vocal modes – others are by contemporaries, some in collaboration with Ahbez, some working on their own – and there's a great rante of trcks that icnlude "The Clam Man", "Umgowah", "India", "Child Of Nature", "Anna Was Mine (demo)", "Overcomers Of The World", and "Monterey" by Eden Ahbez – plus "Surfer John" by Nature Boy & Friends, "Wild Boy" by Mort Wise & The Wisemen, "Eden's Island" by Arthur Lyman, "Land Of Love" by Nat King Cole, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, and "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony. (Put together by the same guy who did Exotic World Of Eden Ahbez – but with different tracks, and even better sound!) CD

Flying Buddha, 2015. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A stunning second set from Hiatus Kaiyote – a group we already loved the first time around, but who really blow us away with this amazing little record! The style is this incredible mix of cosmic keyboards and soulful vocals – but not in a way that's like any of the other oft-tread paths in that combination on the market at all. Instead, the group almost put the keyboards first – working from some Herbie Hancock electric 70s mode, but very much with their own style – then find a key place for the sublime singing of Nai Palm – a vocalist who's got this style that's heavenly, and almost with her own sort of electricity as well. Individual tunes are great, but the whole thing really works together as one long sonic trip – a mindbending journey through tracks that include "Prince Minikid", "Shaolin Monk Motherfunk", "Laputa", "Borderline With My Atoms", "Swamp Thing", "Fingerprints", and "The Lung". Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". CD

Celebration/Void, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Plaintively played and sung, yet searchingly & broodingly engrossing folk from John Palmer – an early 70s effort well worth a discovery! There's a simple sincerity to the songs that makes this timeless, not indebted to the early 70s folk rock of the era, yet comfortably in that moment. It also sounds remarkably in step with much of the post millennium indie folk out there, too. Moments of just voice and guitar, and others with a more electric approach. The insert featuring Palmer's own notes on the tunes, and titles include "Cloud", "Seedling Of Light", "Such A Long Long Time", "The Wheel", "Mandalla", "Bertter Late Than Never" and more. ✨✧ Eddie PalmieriMolasses ... CD
Tico, 1967. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Nothing slow and sticky here – because Eddie Palmieri is really hitting his groove by this point in his career – soaring along in a dark blend of jazz and Latin elements, with a fair bit more complicated modes than most of his contemporaries! There's a sophistication here that's really wonderful – and light years ahead of Eddie's albums of a few years before. Yet the album's never too bogged down in its own importance that it fails to groove – as most of the numbers here are killer groovers that burst out with raw energy that's perfect for a Latin dancefloor! Barry Rogers and Jose Rodrigues play twin trombones, Manny Oquendo is on timbales, and George Castro plays flute – but Eddie's really the star of the set with his incredibly bold lines on piano! Vocals are by Ismael Quintana, and titles include "Melao Para El Sapo", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Tirandote Flores", "Campesino", "Bombonsito de Pozo", and "Carnaval en Camaguey". CD

Elektra, 1994. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A relatively recent effort by Eddie, but also one of his best albums in 25 years! The record's a beautiful batch of Latin jazz instrumentals, played with a lot of fire, but also a lot of maturity and creativity. The compositions are great, and Eddie's in top form on piano, with backing by Donald Harrison, Conrad Hewig, and Brian Lynch. Titles include "Palmas", "Doctor Duck", "Bouncer", and "Slowvisor". Recorded in the 90s, but with a beautifully classic sound! CD

Capitol/Intuition, 1989. Used ... $11.99
An excellent session – very much in the mode of Eddie's groundbreaking work from the early 70s, when he was mixing together some incredibly complicated piano lines with newer styles of Latin jazz. The album's about half vocal, half instrumental – with a very strong jazz component that's made even better through the percussion work of Milton Cardona and Francisco Aquabella. Eddie's piano is the real treat, though – and it's incredible on tracks like "Just A Little Dream", "Azucar", "La Libertad", and "Verdict On Judge Street". CD

Tico (France), 1976. New Copy ... $11.99 13.98
Brilliant 70s work by Eddie Palmieri – easily one of his greatest records of the decade! The album features Eddie really showing off his jazz chops on a number of longer tracks – tunes that bring together some of the spirit forged during the Harlem River Drive era, with some of the more descarga-driven styles of his Coco albums. Eddie plays both electric and acoustic piano on the session – and the group is small and tight, with a sound that really compresses the energy of the grooves on the album! One that we'd recommend in a minute, with great tracks that include "Vamanos Pa'l Monte", "Viejo Socarron", "Comparasa De Los Locos", and the excellent "Revolt/La Libertad Logico". CD

✨✧ Cal Tjader & Eddie PalmieriEl Sonido Nuevo ... CD
Verve, 1966. Used ... $18.99
A classic collaboration between vibist Cal Tjader and Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri – a really wonderful album that bridges two different worlds of music in the 60s! Cal had always had something of a Latin bent to his music, even working for Fantasy in San Francisco a decade before – but here, teamed up with Eddie Palmieri, his music gets a great New York infusion – and one that's even a bit more contemporary than some of Tjader's previous 60s Latin efforts. Eddie's sharp-edged piano is totally great – ringing out with some especially bold tones – and other players on the set include Julian Priester and Mark Weinstein on trombones, Ismael Quintana on percussion, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, and George Castro on flute. Arrangements are by Eddie and Claus Ogerman – and titles include "Los Jibaros", "Ritmo Uni", "Picadillo", "Unidos", "El Sonido Nuevo", and "Guajira En Azul". CD reissue also includes 6 bonus cuts that weren't on the original LP! CD

A hard-driving set from the great Eddie Palmieri – and a record that's maybe his strongest salsa effort in years, even though it's still filled with lots of the edgey, jazzy touches he's also brought to his best material in recent decades! The album's got a very strong lead vocal presence – both from Herman Olivera and Gilberto Santa Rosa, both of whom join Eddie's group and provide a strong focus for the ensemble's jazzy performances – with an especially strong sax section that includes work from Craig Handy, Ralph Moore, Gary Smulyan, and Ronnie Cuber! Carlos Santana serves up a few guitar parts on the record – and the group also features work from Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, and Brian Lynch and Jonathan Powell on trumpets – amidst plenty of percussion, and strong lead piano from Palmieri. Titles include "Mi Congo", "Chica Ni Lambo", "Abarriba Cumbiaremos", "Sun Sun Babae", "Yo Soy Mulato", "Tremendo Cumban", "Sonando Con Puerto Rico", and "El Resbaloso". CD

An upbeat groover from 60s Brazil – a highly percussive album that features work by Wilson Das Neves and Rubens Bassini – plus some excellent chorus vocals too! The whole thing's maybe a bit more of a hard-driving example of the Brazilian harmony mode heard from bigger groups like Tamba Trio or Os Cariocas – served up with a very strong instrumental current that includes heavy piano from the leader, and some great guitar lines from Neco – who you might know from classic albums of his own! The mix is great, and very strong – and makes for an album that bristles with electricity on every groove – on titles that include "Lagrima Flor", "Telefone", "Da Bola", "Deixa Isso Pra La", "Isto E Samba", "Consolacao", "Roda De Samba", and "Bate A Palma". Pye/Long Hair (France), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Paul Brett's Sage may be dripping away in an hourglass on the cover, but the group stand on very firm foundation with this debut – definitely one of the more unique records of their generation on the UK scene, and a set that doesn't come with any easy reference point – even given the work of leader Paul Sage in a bunch of key prog acts in years before! There's a sensitivity here that's surprising – both in the way that Brett handles vocals on some of the tracks, and in the album's use of flute and saxes from Nicky Higginbottom – an element that's stronger here than you might expect – but maybe more in the way that Harold McNair would add the right woodwind flourishes to a Donovan song. There's some larger arrangements from David Palmer on the set – but most of the instrumentation is from the core quartet, who keep things nice and lean on some well-focused tunes that include "Warlock", "The Painter", "3D Mona Lisa", "Little Aztec Prince", "Reason For Asking", "Trophies Of War", and "Mediterranean Lazy Heat Wave". A beautiful little record from the glory days of the acid folk scene in the UK – a set served up by Clive Palmer, who you might know from work in Incredible String Band and Wizz Jones – sounding even more enigmatic here at the helm of a trio who were produced by the legendary Ralph McTell! The style is light years from the more traditional sounds of some of Ralph's music – very moody and dark, with instrumentation that comes from guitar, recorder, and a variety of other instruments – including the unusual dulcitar, which was invented by trio member John Bidwell! Lead vocals are from Clive and Mick Bennett – alternating on different tracks, and harmonizing with a very eerie vibe, one that's further expanded by the unusual production modes too. A few tracks add in other elements, but just lightly – really keeping the solitary, spooky vibe of the record intact. Electric Prunes (with David Axelrod)Release Of An Oath ... LP
Reprise, 1968. Very Good+ ... $49.99
The second album done by David Axelrod for The Electric Prunes – and arguably the best! The album's a bit unusual, in that none of the original Prunes were actually working on the session – and instead, Axlerod's almost fully at the helm – putting together the set in a way that's quite similar to his own solo albums over at Capitol! As with those, there's a bold, spacious sort of instrumentation here – richly orchestral, but also quite funky at times – punctuated by great drums from Earl Palmer, bass from Carol Kaye, keyboards from Don Randi, and guitar from Howard Roberts – who's really tripping out nicely here! The work uses the Jewish Kol Nidre mass as its conceptual focus – but really takes off with plenty of tripped-out Axelrod flourishes that make the whole thing a fair bit more psychedelic than anything you'd ever hear in temple. Titles include "Holy Are You", "The Adoration", "Our Father, Our King", "Kol Nidre", and "General Confessional". LP, Vinyl record album

A much-needed slice of work from Juju – the group who later transformed into spiritual funk ensemble Oneness Of Juju! Juju only recorded two full albums in the early 70s, so this unissued live set is a key addition to their catalog – and the whole thing's got this bold quality that's much more jazz-based, and often more avant than the group's later work – more in line with work in the tradition of the AACM, or some of the earliest loft jazz talents. No surprise, the set was recorded at Ornette Coleman's space on the lower east side in the early 70s – with the mighty Plunky Nakbinde on saxes and flute, sounding a lot more searing than any of his records from the 80s onward – plus Babatunde on percussion, Lon Moshe on vibes and flute, and Al-Hammel Rasul on keyboards. There's a bit of vocalizations, and lots of percussion from group members too – and the sound is very spiritual, with touches of more percussive Afro-centric playing. Not the first album we've heard from saxophonist Michael Thomas, but a record that definitely has us looking at his music all over again – thanks to a double-length collection of wonderfully extended tunes – on which Thomas really runs with bold, open energy on the alto sax! The group here has no piano – just the trumpet of Jason Palmer in the frontline, plus bass from Hans Glawischnig and drums from Johnathan Blake – two rhythm players who bring plenty to the table, but sometimes like to let the horns to the swinging – which Thomas and Palmer do in these nicely blocky passages of sound. Island/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
A trio of overlooked albums from UK group Vinegar Joe – packaged here with bonus tracks as well! First up is the group's debut, Vinegar Joe – a record with a UK blend of roots rock and deeper blues currents – but served up in that 70s style that takes all the best elements way past their familiar incarnations! The group sports two singers – a young Robert Palmer and female vocalist Elkie Brooks – and although Palmer would soon emerge as a more pop-oriented artist, he's got plenty of soulful chops here – but maybe still only second to Elkie, who soars out with the sort of inspiration that must have touched Janis Joplin as well. Titles include "Circles", "Leg Up", "See The World", "Never Met A Dog", "Live A Little Get Somewhere", and "Avinu Malkenu". Next up is Rock & Roll Gypsies – a record with a really wonderful sound – tight, but never too polished – maybe that UK love of American soul inspirations that folks know more famously in work by artists like Joe Cocker or Traffic, but which is served up here with a really unique feel by the overlooked Vinegar Joe! The group sports a fantastic lead female vocalist in Elkie Brooks, who'd later go on to make some great records on her own – and a young Robert Palmer rounds out the lyrics with a quality that's so different than his later work, and maybe even more soulful overall. Titles include "Falling", "It's Gettin To The Point", "Buddy Can You Spare Me A Line", "Angel", "No One Ever Do", "Forgive Us", and "Charley's Horse". Last up is Six Star General – the third album from Vinegar Joe, and a set that we're not sure got the same global circulation as the earlier albums – which is a real shame, as the group here are maybe even more focused on their sound than before! By this point, Robert Palmer has left the group, but the wonderful Elkie Brooks is still in the lead on guitar – and the group have impeccable instrumentation from Jim Mullen on guitar, Keef Harley on drums, and Mike Deacon on keyboards. Titles include "Proud To Be", "Black Smoke Rising From The Calumet", "Let Me Down Easy", "Fine Thing", "Lady Of The Rain", and "Dream My Own Dreams". Also features bonus tracks "Speed Queen Of Ventura", "Long Way Round", and single versions of "Black Smoke Rising From The Calument" and "Rock & Roll Gypsies". CD

Pivotal early dancehall work from the Kingston scene – all of it produced by the legendary Sonia Pottinger, almost all of it issued on her short-lived Dance Hall label! The music here shares some of the qualities of the emerging mode at other labels – but unlike, say, Studio one – which built new tracks on older rhythms – Pottinger works here with new grooves, mostly by The Revolutionaries – mostly slow-tripping, at a level that takes off from the roots years – topped with a mix of singers and DJs that get some really great dubby production touches! This isn't the digital work of a few years to come, but warm, well-crafted material that caps off the last moment before reggae took on some more electronic styles in the following decade – all served up with the usual great notes and attention to detail we love from the Doctor Bird label. The package features 34 tracks in all – some unreleased – and titles include "Tan Turdy" by Errol Scorcher, "Stormy Weather (12" mix)" by Bobby Ellis, "Different Fashion" by Lee Van Cleef, "A Little Bit Of Love" by Jah Thomas, "Whole Lot Of Loving" by The Enchanters, "Oppressor" by Tony Tuff, "Financial Problem" by Zara, "Annie Palmer (12" mix)" by Papa Ritchie, "Mr Landlord (12" mix)" by Michael Palmer, "Road Block" by Carl & Gibby, "General" by Ranking Joe, and "It's My Home (12" mix)" by Lorna Bennett. VariousDJ Amir Presents Buena Music Y Cultura – Good Music & Culture – Rare Latin Sounds From Across The Americas ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
One of the most fantastic collections we've ever heard from DJ Amir – a set that may well blow away his classic On/Off Track sets for the depth of its spirit and feeling! Amir's been well-known as a crate digger for many years – and while digging for funk, soul, and hip hop on the New York scene, he's also come across plenty of rare Latin nuggets – not familiar salsa or crossover Latin Soul, but instead some much deeper numbers that show just how much spirit and imagination the music had when it was at its best! Most of the numbers here are from late 60s and 70s vintage – and many have this jazzy energy that goes way past just simple grooves, and which instead features the richer colors and complicated motions of some of Eddie Palmieri's music, especially in the 70s. Titles include the previously unreleased "Salsa (parts 1 & 2)" by Fito Foster – plus "Picadillo" by La Moderna Of New York, "Bomba" by Dax Pacem, "Paranoia" by Wayne Gorbea Y Su Conjunto Salsa, "Rogelio Tiene La Salsa" by Chino Y Su Conjunto Melao, "Yo No Bailo Con Juana" by Cortijo Y Kako, "Vete De Aqui" by Joey Aponte, "Asi Asi Descarga" by Mike Hernandez Y Su Sonora Casino, "Tembelque" by Louie Colon, "El Ritmo Soledad" by Orchestra Soledad, and "El Pulpo" by Joey Pastrana. VariousStop & Listen Vol 5 – Masters At Work ... CD
BBE (UK), 2000. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Excellent stuff – and possibly the best title in this already great series! Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega put together this killer set of tracks, and the groove runs from Latin to house to funk to soul to disco and back again! Sounds like a hodge-podge effort, but the MAW team make it work beautifully, and we're stunned at how we barely notice the transition between songs and moods – just more proof of the deep well of influences that Kenny and Louie are able to blend into a whole new sound and style of dancefloor rhythms. Louie's at the helm on CD one – and tracks include "Melting Pot" by Boris Gardner, "Wishing You Were Here" by Blaze, "Je Ka Jo" by Joe Claussel, "Puerto Rico" by Eddie Palmieri, "When You Touch Me" by Taana Gardner, "Troubled Girl" by Karen Ramirez, and "Beau Mot Plage" by Isolee. Kenny's got the heads up on CD two – and that one features great cuts like "Coro Miyare" by Fania All Stars, "Seventh Heaven" by Gwen Guthrie, "Rude Movements" by Sun Palace, "Time Is Running Out" by Doug Carn, "2U 4U" by Slum Village, "Getcho Soul Together (parts 1 & 2)" by Breakestra, "Slowly Surely" by Jill Scott, and "See Line Woman" by Nina Simone. Totally great – and with an approach that leaves us breathless! CD

✨✧ David AxelrodEarth Rot – A Musical Comment On The State Of The Environment (Instrumentals) ... LP
Capitol/Now Again, 1970. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic counterpart to David Axelrod's classic album Earth Rot – one that has none of the message-oriented vocals and spoken bits of that set, but all of the fantastic instrumentation that was at the core! The music here is amazing – put together by Axelrod in this blend of jazz and loftier ideas, really the perfect summation of everything everyone's always found so great about his records. There's loads of great vibes, amazing horn parts, and these great funky drums from Earl Palmer – crafted together in a suite of seven instrumental tracks that are all pretty darn great! ✨✧ David AxelrodSong Of Innocence ... CD
Capitol/Now Again, 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of a handful of amazing albums recorded by David Axelrod towards the end of the 60s – really stunning, genre-breaking music that was years ahead of its time – and which has only finally been getting its due in more recent decades! At the time of the record, Axelrod was a house producer at Capitol Records – where he'd created big hits for Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley – and he'd also been experimenting a bit with studio techniques for other rock groups. But here, the Axe brings all his experience into play – then sends things soaring to the skies – with music based on the work of poet William Blake, but delivered in this totally groovy west coast 60s mode. The core of the instrumentation features funky drums from Earl Palmer and bass from Carole Kaye – both of whom really keep things rock-solid amidst the larger mix of strings and instruments directed by the great Don Randi – who himself is pretty darn wonderful too. The music has nice snatches of fuzz and organ throughout – jazzy moments, funky passages, and lots more too – served up on tunes that include much-sampled song "Holy Thursday" – plus "The Smile", "A Dream", "Song Of Innocence", and "The Mental Traveler". William Blake never sounded so funky! CD
(Fantastic reissue – new remastering, and a big booklet of notes on the music!)

✨✧ Marion BrownAfternoon Of A Georgia Faun ... LP
ECM, 1970. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Marion Brown's more ambitious albums – and a key bridge from his freer work of the late 60s, to his more contemplative sides of the early 70s. The instrumentation on the set's a bit more expanded than on other Brown albums – with saxes by Anthony Braxton and Bennie Maupin, piano and percussion by Chick Corea, percussion by Andrew Cyrille, and voice by Jeanne Lee and Gayle Palmore. At times, the setting gets a bit cluttered, and obscures Brown's soulful tone a bit too much – but at others, the whole thing comes off well. Titles include "Djinji's Corner" and "Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ COB (Clive's Original Band)Spirit Of Love ... CD
CBS/Bread & Wine, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "Evening Air", "Serpent's Kiss", "Wade In The Water", "Soft Touches Of Love", "Music Of The Ages", Spirit Of Love", and "Sweet Slavery". CD

✨✧ Neal HeftiJazz Pops ... LP
Reprise, 1962. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very groovy work from the amazing Neal Hefti – one of the best non-soundtrack albums issued under his own name, and a set that's filled with bouncy, catchy little tunes! The style here takes off nicely from Neal's previous work with Count Basie, but also shows some of his upcoming soundtrack styles as well – especially his great penchant for offbeat instrumental phrasing, and whimsical way of penning a groove. The ensemble's filled with great players who include Plas Johnson and Buddy Collette on flutes, Conte Candoli and Gerald Wilson on trumpets, Emil Richards and Larry Bunker on vibes, Earl Palmer on drums, and Francisco Aquabella on percussion – all in a sound that's quite fresh, and really unique! There's a fair bit of flutes in the mix – even more than the Hefti/Basie use of the instrument – and the tunes have that tightly punctuated Hefti sound throughout, making for plenty of groovers throughout! Titles include "Exodus", "Cute", "Like Young", "Take Five", "Moanin", "Lil Darlin", and "Coral Reef". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe HendersonCanyon Lady ... CD
Milestone/OJC, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Subtle genius from Joe Henderson – a wonderfully laidback album that interweaves Latin rhythms, west coast soul jazz, and some slight electric touches – all in a mode that shows Henderson to be one of the deepest thinking players of his scene! All tracks are long and exploratory, without going too far out – and they're done here with a style that's gentler and more introspective than Henderson's first few electric records – but in a way that makes them even more complicated and deeply soulful. Players include Oscar Brashear, George Duke, Luis Gasca, Hadley Caliman, and Mark Levine – but Henderson's tenor is the main guiding force of the set – moodily exploring some wonderful space laid out on the tunes "All Things Considered", "Las Palmas", "Tres Palabras", and "Canyon Lady". ✨✧ John KlemmerAnd We Were Lovers ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing record – and one that we passed up for years and years, but which is now one of our all-time favorites! The album's hard to describe accurately – or at least accurately enough to give it the credit it needs – but it was recorded during the classic days of the late Cadet Studios, with production by Richard Evans, and a swirling set of jazzy backgrounds that bring out some of the best solo work that John Klemmer ever did! One side of the record has string backing by Dick LaPalm, but that backing's not sleepy – and instead has a hip swinging soulful sound that reminds us of the best Eddie Harris work in a similar mode. Klemmer's tone is similar to Harris' at the time – a bit soul jazz, with touches of funk at times, but also far-reaching, with an ability to stretch into great modal moments. Side two of the album features a quartet with Harris' bass player Melvin Jackson, plus Jodie Christian on piano and James Slaughter on drums. Titles include "Touch Of The Moment", "Look To The Sky", "Chi Cha", "Dreams", and "Christopher's Clock". LP, Vinyl record album

A salsa smoker from the great Alfredo Linares – recorded at the start of the 80s, and almost a summation of all the greatness Linares had packed into his music during the decade before! Alfredo is on piano throughout – really driving things along with a rhythmic pulse and the kind of energy that almost make him a Charlie Palmieri of the Venezuelan scene – backed by a combo that features two trumpets, two trombones, and plenty of heavy percussion! Most of the tunes are upbeat and very jamming – in kind of a salsa/descarga mode – and even the few mellow moments open up with some great piano work that makes you happy you're taking a bit of a breather. A mixture of Latin-inflected and bossa-driven club grooves – very much in the spirit of recent work on labels like Compost and Schema, with all the high level of quality that reference might imply! The group do a great job of mixing electric instrumentation (guitar, keyboards, sitar, vibes) with warm production – crafting a hip set of tracks that has the depth of a classic jazz release, but all the sparkle of some of the best newer work of the European underground! ✨✧ Lou RawlsLou Rawls Live! (Capitol) ... LP
Capitol, 1966. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums to ever sum up the genius of Lou Rawls in the 60s – a brilliant live set put together with the talents of David Axelrod! The record perfectly captures the easy-going soul of Rawls in the early years – a natural approach to his music that made him one of the best singers of his genre at the time, and which comes out especially strong in the album's upbeat monologues, which are often delivered by Lou with musical accompaniment, then leap strongly into the lyrics of a tune. Backing is by a small jazzy combo that includes Herb Ellis on guitar and the great rhythm team of Jimmy Bond on bass and Earl Palmer on drums – both of whom bring a nice little groove to most of the album's numbers. Titles include "Street Corner Hustler's Blues/World Of Trouble", "Southside Blues/Tobacco Road", "The Shadow of Your Smile", "In The Evening When The Sun Goes Down", "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", and "The Girl From Ipanema". ✨✧ VariousLet's Do The Boogaloo ... LP
BGP (UK), Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A set that really gets at the full spectrum of the boogaloo groove – not just the Spanish Harlem sounds of the Latin Soul generation – but also the deeper roots of the style from across the USA! "Boogaloo" is a term that most folks use to refer to that New York uptown fusion of Latin rhythms and soulful vocals – and while the NYC styles were key to its fame, the music also burst forth from lots of points west, too – and came together in a flurry of fast rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, and hard-driving vocals that made for a completely infectious blend! This package is a fantastic testament to that mad musical moment – and is overflowing with a selection of gems that goes way past the obvious – not the Fania Records catalog that usually shows up on other boogaloo releases, but a huge batch of tracks from small labels and indie singles too. Titles include "Skate Boogaloo & Karate Too" by Lee Harris, "Block Party" by Jimmy Castor, "Boogaloo #3" by Roy Lee Johnson, "Do The Boo-Ga-Loo (part 1)" by Tom & Jerroo, "Playing It Cool" by Hector Rivera, "Ready Steady Go" by Prince & Princess, "Bar Kays Boogaloo" by The Bar-Kays, "What I Feel" by Richie & The PS 54 School Yard, "Have Some Boogaloo" by Timmy Thomas, "Bugalu" by Charlie Palmieri, "Boogaloo (part 1)" by The Bob & Earl Band, "Me & You Doing The Boogaloo" by Lou Courtney, "Boogaloo Zoo" by Shirley Butler, "Bugaloo Party" by Harold & Connie, "Boogaloo Investigator" by The Exotics, "Funky Funky Boogalo" by Jimmy Brown, and "Let's Do The Funky Boogaloo (part 1)" by Barry Jones. Fantastic work by one of the greatest Latin jazz groups ever! The Alegre All Stars were heavily inspired by the Cuban Jam Sessions of the late 50s and early 60s – and the ensemble brought together some of the greatest players of the New York scene of the time – like Bobby Rodriguez, Louie Ramirez, Charlie Palmieri, Kako, and others. The group had a real talent for loosely jamming Latin jazz – and they virtually pioneered the descarga sound through their initial four albums for the Alegre label. This set features 10 tracks from those albums – including a few long jammers, and a few shorter tracks with vocals. By the mid 70s, the New York Latin scene was boomin' so large it could easily fill venues like Yankee Stadium – as you'll hear on this excellent live set from the Fania All-Stars, a monster record that easily ranks with the best live Latin sides of the time – like Eddie Palmieri at Sing Sing, the Tico-Alegre All Stars at Carnegie Hall, or Mongo Santamaria at Yankee Stadium! Tracks are nice and long – a real mix of soul and Latin, with slight funk and electric touches – and players include Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Bobby Valentin, Mongo Santamaria, Ricardo Ray, and Roberto Roena. Vocals are by a host of singers that include Santos Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, and Celia Cruz. ✨✧ Bernard HerrmannFilm Scores On Phase 4 (7CD set) ... CD
Phase 4/Decca, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful package – one that presents the famous film composer in one of his best recording settings of all time! Bernard Herrmann is a legend for soundtrack work in two different generations – the postwar years, when he scored some of the most important films by Alfred Hitchcock – and the 70s, when he returned to greatness with scores for Martin Scorcese, and other directors. Yet the work here is pretty darn wonderful too – kind of a bookmark between the two generations, as Herrmann was working with the British Phase 4 label – known for their tremendous studio abilities, and crystal clear sound that was years ahead of its time! The first six albums in the set are all compilations – in which Herrmann offers up his own arrangements and re-recordings of both his own work, and titles by others – on albums that include The Great Movie Thrillers, Music From Great Film Classics, The Fantasy Film World Of Bernard Herrmann, Music From Great Shakespearean Films, The Mysterious Film World Of Bernard Herrmann, and Great British Film Music. The set finishes with a final original score by Herrmann – his striking music for the Brian DePalma film Obsession – part of his return to greatness in the 70s! CD
