Atlantic StarrAtlantic Starr (with bonus track) ... CD
A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... $10.99
The first album by Atlantic Starr – a tight set of modern soul tunes with a very different feel than their later work! Part of the credit goes to Bobby Eli – who arranged and produced the set, giving it a feel that's almost late Philly – tight, sophisticated, and right on the money at all the best points! There's a number of sweet mellow ballads with lead vocals by Sharon Bryant, and other tracks that groove in an uptempo way that points towards more of the group's 80s work – a great mix of modes that makes for a really well-developed album right out of the gate. Titles include "Gimme Your Lovin", "The Love I Never Had", "Visions", "Keep It Comin", "Stand Up", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "We Got It Together", and "Being In Love With You Is So Much Fun". CD features a bonus track – "Stand Up (single version)". CD

Philip BaileyContinuation ... CD
Columbia/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An 80s soul classic from Philip Bailey – stepping out here from Earth Wind & Fire in a set that has him sparkling strongly as a solo act! The vocals still have that trademark Bailey sound – a wonderful range that's never overdone, and which seems to shine especially well on the mellow and midtempo tunes in the set! Production is by George Duke, who does a lot to preserve the jazzier warmth of Bailey's previous settings – and although there's a bit more crossover potential here, the sound is still never too commercial or aimed at the charts. Titles include "It's Our Time", "Trapped", "I Know", "I'm Waitin For Your Love", "Desire", "The Good Guy's Supposed To Get The Girls", and "Your Boyfriend's Back". CD

A lost 80s groover from The Netherlands – one that's done in a style that's very similar to American soul work of the time, but which also has a nice sparkly finish that's got traces of UK 80s soul! The keyboards are very nicely placed in the set – never too strong, and with some jazzy flourishes that help deepen the feel of the set, and maintain a warm stepping midtempo groove. Tracks include "Flying High", "Feelgood", "Where Are You Now", "Funky Nights", "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Shadows Of The Night", and "Who Will Be The One". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Shadows Of The Night (club mix)" and "Feelgood (extended mix)". CD

Chocolate Jam CoSpread Of The Future ... CD
Epic/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy ... $10.99
A funky fusion classic from the 70s – totally great work from Chocolate Jam Company, a hip little group headed up by percussionist Leon Ndugu Chancler! The core sound is soul, but there's plenty of fusion touches as well – thanks to a great lineup of players that includes Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Duke on keyboards, David T Walker on guitar, and even Dorothy Ashby on harp! Chancler sings lead vocals on most cuts – but he's also joined by Virginia Ayers and Leo Mille on some cuts too – making for a really well-rounded sound that's easily one of the best jazz-into-soul sessions like this from the 70s – almost topping the more famous work from folks like Lenny White or Mtume! Titles include "Don't Leave Me Now Stay With Me", "Feeling", "This Time", "Looking Glass", and the extended "Suite Chocolate". CD

Con Funk ShunLoveshine ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used ... $11.99
Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – working here under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". CD

Dazz BandWild & Free (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Geffen/PTG (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy ... $10.99
The Dazz Band may be wild and free in the title, but the album's tighter than ever – a lean, focused approach to the Dazz Band sound – done here with loads of 80s production and instrumentation in the mix! The rhythms are heavy with drum machine lines – often mixed with keyboard bits and swirled together with a sound that's even more crossover than some of the group's earlier work. Vocals often take a back seat to the grooves – but on the ballads they shine through nicely, and remind us of the group's roots. Titles include "The Beat That's Right", "Wild & Free", "Love MIA", "Sunglasses", "Something You Said", and "Time Will Heal A Broken Heart". CD features bonus tracks – "Wild & Free (ext dance rmx)", "Last Chance For Love", "Love MIA (house mix)", and "A Place In My Heart". CD

Rosie GainesCaring (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... $10.99
A near-lost album of 80s soul from Rosie Gaines – produced, arranged, and mostly written by Rosie with help from a few key associates – and done in a nicely mellow style that has a deeper feel than most other work from her contemporaries! Instrumentation is definitely in the 80s mode – with a fair bit of electric percussion and keyboards – but Rosie's vocals aren't content with just sliding along with the rhythms, and have a deeply soulful range that we really like a lot, and which totally makes the record great. We've always been surprised that this set didn't push her onto bigger fame – but over and above that mystery, the record's a great one that holds together beautifully over the years. Titles include "I've Gone Too Far", "Skool-ology", "Caring", "Frustration", "Wake Up", "Good Times", and "What Are We Coming To". CD features bonus tracks – "Crazy" and "In A Jam". CD

Gap BandGap Band V – Jammin' (with bonus track) ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. Used ... $11.99
The Gap Band are definitely Jammin on this sweet little set from the early 80s – hitting that fierce funk mode they do so well, with lots of snapping lines at the bottom of the rhythms! The style is trademark Gap all the way through – a percolated approach to funk that's tight, but never too slick – in a groove that's different than some of their other mainstream counterparts at the time – hard to describe accurately, but almost with a touch of jazz in the mix! Charlie Wilson handles most of the lead vocals, with support from brothers Robert and Ronnie – and Ronnie produced most of the set. Titles include "Where Are We Going", "Shake A Leg", "Jam The Motha", "Someday", "You're Something Special", "I'm Ready", "You're My Everything", "Smile", and "Jammin In America". CD also features the bonus track "Party Train (special dance mix)". CD

Gwen GuthriePortrait (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... $10.99
Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes of Harry Whitaker, Bernie Worrell, and Wally Badarou – all massive talents that bring a nice sweet jazzy sound to the best cuts on the record. There's a definite 80s sing-song groove going on – in that not-yet-top-of-the-charts soul sound that you'd hear on the better small urban stations at the time – moving back and forth nicely, in a strong link between the mainstream and the underground clubs! Tracks include "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Oh What A Life", "Younger Than Me", and a nice cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Padlock (Larry Levan special mix)", "Hopscotch (Larry Levan rmx inst)", and "Peanut Butter (Larry Levan special mix)". CD

Al Hudson & The Soul PartnersHappy Feet (with bonus track) ... CD
ABC/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy ... $10.99
Joyous, bouncy sounds from the legendary Al Hudson – a sweet little set with his Soul Partners group, done in a mode that's right up there with the best music of his One Way combo! The grooves are uptempo, yet are much more rooted in ensemble funk than some of the disco of Al's contemporaries – and if anything, the album really shows a great evolution from the funk bands of the previous generation to a newer, more sophisticated style overall. Hudson's work at the helm is wonderful – and helps steer the group towards some nice mellow moments too – with arrangements from Kevin McCord, Rudy Robinson, and Dave Roberson. Alicia Myers serves up some great early vocals with the group – and titles include "I Don't Want You To Leave Me", "Another Love Song", "You Can Do It", "In The Basement", "Call Me", and "Rock". CD features a bonus track – "You Can Do It (disco mix)". CD

Solid 80s grooving soul from Howard Johnson – a singer who'd worked often with other, bigger artists – but who only cut a handful of albums under his own name. The set's got a lot of production help from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who make their presence known in the record's electrified bass and keys approach – but it's Johnson's strong presence as a lead singer that really holds the set together – a sweet little groover! Titles include "So Tuff", "Knees", "Stand Up", "Outta My Head", "Older Girl", "Show Me How", and "You've Got A Lot To Learn". CD

Kool & The GangEverybody's Dancin' ... CD
De-Lite/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used ... $9.99
Kool & The Gang sounding super-tight, but mighty right as well – a groove that still has all the great jazz elements of their mid 70s records, but which also has them picking up the bassy bottom a bit more too! The sound is not nearly as slick as their 80s hits – and instead still really hangs onto all the best qualities of the De-Lite years, while also moving the group forward at a level that strongly contests all the younger funky combos who were trying to steal their flame! Rhythms are wonderful – completely infectious, and often with some complicated twists that really keeps things interesting – and the album's got the kind of upbeat, joyous groove you'd definitely expect from the title. Tracks include "Everybody's Dancin", "Dancin' Shoes", "Big Chief's Funkum", "I Like Music" "It's All You Need", "Peace To The Universe", and "At The Party". CD

Kool & The Gang's a little bit slicker and a little bit smoother on The Force than on earlier classic records – but thankfully, they're still getting on down to the funky sounds! The Force does indeed have more of a spacey boogie than a jungle boogie vibe, but they're still doing what we love to hear from them. Party funk and soul from this legendary group – and the soul comes out especially well on the mellower numbers, which seem to take off from classics on albums like Love & Understanding or Open Sesame. A nicely grooving soul album from Love Committee – who are probably best known for their earlier disco songs, but we really dig this 1980 self-titled album for the mellower numbers – the best of which have a smooth midtempo groove that's as tasty as ever! A few of the numbers were co-written by Eddie Levert of The O'Jays, an indication of the style LC were going for, and they hit it nicely! Titles include "Love People Theme", "Ain't It a Shame", "You Are the One for Me","Boogie Papers", "Who Can We Trust", "I Wanna Make Love to You", and "I Made A Mistake". Lynn's vocals, as always, are totally top-shelf – more than bold enough to soar over whatever groove she'd choose – although in this case, the groove is right on the money – definitely as right as the title implies! Titles include "Fade to Black", "Find Somebody New", "Let Me Love You", and "Love's Been Here Before". CD features the bonus track "Fidelity (12" version)". CD

The group have a more modern vibe here than they might on the stage – a sweet 80s groove approach that features plenty of tight basslines bumping up the rhythms, with keyboards following quickly in step – all while the group often do a great job of harmonizing together alongside the groove! There's a nicely varied sound to the record – one that goes way past the usual slapbass funk of the time – and titles include the nice mellow cuts "Baby Doll" and "The Love We'll Share" – plus "Shakedown", "Party Time", "Hard On It", and "Take You Out". A different sound than the Manhattans of the 70s – but a set that's still got some wonderful harmonies throughout! The production has a modern sort of 80s crackle – more beats and keyboards than before, but also some standout acapella moments that hearken back to an old school style of group soul that even predates the first recordings by The Manhattans back in the 60s. This mix of modern and classic really gives the album some weight – and is balanced out nicely through the set list – with tracks that include "Don't Say No", "Angel Of The Night", "You Send Me", "C'Est La Vie", "Dreamin", "Too Hot To Stop It", and "When We Are Made As One". The music is clubby at points, but also mellows out at others – mixing bassy grooves with spacier moments that have an especially nice vibe – and which really showcase a sophisticated modern soul side of the group! And the production work features plenty of old talents from Brunswick Records – including Chicago soul giants Carl Davis, Eugene Record, and Sonny Sanders – who really put the record together with a lot of care, at a level that should have made these guys huge. A great lost set, but well worth discovering – and tracks include "Volcanic Voodoo", "Take It To The Top", "What Makes You Wanna Lie To Me", "You're My Everything", "Show Him The Way To Go", and "Worry". O'Bryan's virtually a one man show here – handling vocals, keyboards, arrangements, and other instrumental bits too – but he also gets some great help on the album's lean arrangements, with just the right sort of funky touches on guitar, bass, and drums! The set starts out with a tighter, funkier feel than we remember from O'Bryan's other work – a nice link between 80s groove styles and late 70s mainstream funk – with the leader's vocals wrapped very nicely around the grooves! But as the set moves on, it's the ballads and mellower cuts that really win us – tunes that move a bit slower, but still have a nice bite in the rhythm, with a sweet laidback stepping vibe. The bigger hits of the commercial disco boom were well behind them by this point, but their sound is updated incredibly well here – smartly not going overboard with too much synth, and letting the the vocal trio lead the vibe. Ross begins the set by covering Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" – and there's definitely a similar vibe to the record – that kind of warmer grooving that Leon Ware brought to his own work for the label – sparkling and tight, yet never commercial at all – and served up with a style that's right on the money – known when to groove gently, and when to lay back and enjoy a more soulful moment too! Ross is great throughout – not as much on vocals as on his overall presentation – set up amidst nice rhythms from James Gadson on drums and Harold Johnson on keyboards. A bit tighter and more conventional soul than earlier work by Starpoint, but still pretty darn great too – and great proof that the group were more on top of their bag than other funky combos of the type! Renee Diggs is strongly out front on vocals throughout – lending her sweet sound to the flurry of electro keys and beats that make up most of the instrumentation here. The instrumentation's almost got some echoes of the Minneapolis funky soul scene at the times, but echoes the group's older sound at other points – and although a few tracks are quite hook heavy, they're never too poppish or cloying. StarpointKeep On It ... CD
Chocolate City/PTG (France), 1981. New Copy ... $10.99
Excellent work from Starpoint – the kind of all-solid album that easily marks them as one of the most soulful groups of the boogie generation! There's a depth here that goes way beyond simple bass-heavy grooves for the dancefloor – a sound that picks a fair bit up from the Earth Wind & Fire groove of the early 70s, and manages to keep some jazzy touches and righteous undercurrents going on – even when the tunes themselves have simpler themes overall. Renee Diggs' lead vocals are especially wonderful – crackling with a warmth that's a nice change from the usual belting club diva mode of the period, and which ties together the rest of the group through the strength of her presence. Rhythms are nicely varied too – with some key ballads sitting nicely next to more uptempo numbers – making for a well-rounded album that's extremely well put together! Titles include "I Just Want To Be Your Lover", "For You", "Keep On It", "We're Into Love", "Starpoint's Here Tonight", and the excellent but too short "Interlude". CD

That tune actually manages to outshine most of the other work on the set – and even though it had quite a bit of play at the time, thanks to Saturday Night Fever, it's still a heck of a great little track, with a unique blend of harmonies and flute licks that still manages to come across with a personal feel. Oattes Van Schaik (The Limit)Limit (aka Love Attaxx) ... CD
Portrait/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. Used ... $6.99
Dutch soul, but with plenty of help from US talents – including Gwen Guthrie on vocals and David Sanborn on saxes! Oattes Van Schaik is actually the duo of Bernard Oattes and Rob Van Shaik – and the album was originally issued under the group name of The Limit in Europe, which was then changed upon its US debut – kind of a clunky moniker that might have held the set back a bit, even though it's got a tightness that's right up there with US classics of the time. Many of the cuts are upbeat, but also have touch of class – some jazziness in the instrumentation, which warms up the mostly male vocals. Gwen sings on the classic "Say Yeah" – and other tracks include "Miracles", "Could This Be Love", "Love Attaxx", "Destiny", and "Crimes Of Passion". CD

CD

A sweet lean set from T-Connection – still every bit as funky as back in their late 70s years, but with a different sort of style for the new generation! The music's got that great 80s groove approach that Capitol Records excelled at during the time – and the group's a bit more compressed than before – just a quintet, with heavy contributions from Theophilus Coakley on lead vocals, keyboards, songwriting, and production! This focus around a strong male lead gives the group a really fresh feel – and pushes them past the ensemble funk stereotypes of their generation – with great results on cuts that are heavy with funky bass and keyboard lines. The music's never pop, but has some captivating hooks all the way through – sweet little bits mixed in with the funky soul approach of the ensemble – made even better by the great way the vocals get traded back and forth! There's a careful approach to the whole set – a way of putting things together with a good degree of class – and definitely avoiding most of the cliches that would make a similar project sound a lot more clunky. A near-lost chapter in the career of Jean Carn – her one and only album recorded for Motown, cut in the early 80s with production by Norman Connors! Oddly, although Connors was the first producer to give Jean Carn a chance back in the 70s as a smooth soul vocalist – finding her voice a perfect fit for his warm and jazzy arrangements – here, he's going for a style that's a bit more conventionally soul-based, with more guitars and mainstream production than you'd expect. Jean's still pretty great, though, showing why she was one of the best female soul artists of the modern soul era – on tunes that include "My Baby Loves Me", "Don't Let Me Slip Away", "Steady On My Mind", "Completeness", and "Better To Me". Ballads actually sparkle the best here – and showcase that wonderfully full mode that was the best side of The Dramatics harmonies – but the uptempo tunes are good, and have breakout moments that sparkle nicely. Production is by Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds, but Don Davis still oversees the whole thing – and titles include "It Ain't Rainin", "Wecome Back Home", "Love Is Here", "Be With The One You Love", and "Music Is The Peoples Choice". One of the excellent recordings made by The Dramatics at ABC – great group soul gems that are sometimes overlooked because they didn't yield as many hits as earlier sets – but which are stellar records nonetheless! This one's got all the right elements firmly in place – killer production by Don Davis, and smooth but real harmonies from LJ Reynolds, Ron Banks, and the rest of the group. There's a few tracks that hit a smooth sort of groove that might be tagged as "disco" – but which is really just an extension of the super-dope mode that the group used in earlier years – and which has a lot more to offer than just a cheap dancefloor cash in. One of the great late 70s Columbia sets from the Earth Wind & Fire side of the universe – the one and only album by this obscure west coast group, who get some strong help in the studio from Phillip Bailey! Bailey co-produced, and wrote some great songs for the record – and the group's own mix of jazz, funk, and soul is very much in the best spirit of Earth Wind & Fire at the time – tight at all the right moments, but also with this righteous energy in the background – an overall feel that's way deeper than most large ensembles on major labels. This spirit really comes through in the sublime cut "I'll Keep A Light In My Window" – which has a beautifully mellow jazzy groove, and which is on a par with anything Maurice White was laying down in the mid-tempo mode in the 70s – but the whole album's mighty nice, and other titles include "Smile", "Spirit Of Love", "Second Coming", and "Say You Do". At some points, these guys have a way of harmonizing along with electro funk that reminds us a lot of The Jacksons during the 80s – and we mean that in the best way possible – and other cuts almost seem to borrow a bit of inspiration from the Paisley Park generation, especially in the way there's a nicely chunky vibe to the funk! There's even some occasional electro soul touches – either in the keyboards, or in rare spots in the beats – and the whole thing's the kind of album that's got plenty to offer for any fan of funky 80s soul. A classic from One Way – who're still going strong in the early 80s! The group's ace in the hole was always the great work of Al Hudson – a fearless leader who kept things funky, and who wrote in some great hooks to tracks that give them uncommon strength. Case in point is the classic "Cutie Pie", which is the leadoff track here – with a funky bassline would be right at home on George Clinton's Computer Games – but it really takes flight thanks to One Way's deeper-sinking hook. The album is among their bigger hits of the period – but it's also proof that they were still going strong creatively, too. No foolin'! The groove here seems even tighter than ever, but never slick or commercial – a very important distinction, given that so many of One Way's contemporaries really let things slide as they headed for the pop charts. Not so with Al Hudson and group, though – as they always know how to balance things out with all the best elements they had from the start – a good mix of upbeat groovers and some mellower steppers – the latter of which really make us love the record. A crowning moment from the Chicago scene of the late 70s – the second Mercury album from Heaven & Earth, and a stunner all the way through! The set's an undisputed groover right from the start – thanks to the massive arrangements from the great Floyd Morris – an artist who did some excellent work in the Chicago indie soul scene in the 60s, including some classic funky 45s – and whose work here definitely gives Heaven & Earth a sharper edge than most other acts of their type at the time! You can definitely hear Floyd's touch in the funky bottom of the two-part classic "I Feel A Groove Under My Feet", and in the riffing guitar of "Poetry In A Box" – and the group also show their warmer, mellower side nicely on cuts like "Let's Get It Together", "I'm In Love With Your Lady", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Whole Lot Of Love" – nice warm numbers with great harmonies and gentle stepping grooves! Mercury/PTG (UK), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from this smooth Chicago vocal group! The album may well be the best the group ever recorded – and it features some stellar ballad work produced with a nice spacey tone, almost in a Rose Royce mellow mode – by Jerry Butler's Fountain Productions team and by Clarence Johnson, who brought the group up from the beginning! The real strength of the album, though, is the group's vocals – wonderfully harmonious, but with a rougher edge and a deeper soul than many other 70s groups of the same type. The album includes the massive semi-hit "Guess Who's Back In Town" – plus other good ballads like "How Do You Think You're Gonna Find Love", "Let's Work It Out", and "Distant Melody". The album also features some uptempo numbers – and other tracks include "Run & Tell That", "Dance A Thon", and "No Limit". CD

Groovy 80s soul from Howard Johnson! Doin It My Way features is a sweet batch of electro-influenced pop soul – produced by Mic Murphy & David Frank of The System! The record has a very System-y vibe, but Howard's sunny approach to soul vocals really leads the way! Titles include "My Way", "Jump Into Fire", "Let's Take Time Out", "Missing You", Much Too Much", "You're The One I've Needed", "Let This Dream Be Real" and "Everywhere I Go". Post-Philly, and the girls are working here with Fonzi Thornton and Robert Wright – who choose to start off the album with a silly bit of dialogue that has them talking to the singers from the production booth (possibly letting them know that Gamble & Huff are no longer in charge!) Here's a record that we dig a whole lot more than we remember – with a crisp, bright period production vibe that's kind of come full circle after all these years. The girls shoot for that popular 80s mode and they hit the mark – bullseye! Titles include "On Target", "I Can Make A Difference", "Curious", "I'm A Woman Here", "Knockin", and "2 Win U Back". CD

One of the later, post-Fantasy albums by the LA Boppers – a great one for Mercury! Bop Time has some of their nice smooth two step harmony vocals set amidst jazz-tinged arrangements – with plenty of funk in the mix, too – especially in those killer basslines! Augie Johnson produced for At Home productions, so the jazzy moments blend nicely with the dancefloor funky soul. Tracks include "You're On My Mind", "If It Is That Way", "Dreamer", and "You're No. 1". Also features a very tasty remake of "La La Means I Love You"! CD

The last record we've ever seen by this funky vocal combo – and every bit as tasty as their early work for Fantasy Records! Part of the reason for that is because the group's getting production here from Augie Johnson – who picked up plenty of funky jazz touches through his work with Wayne Henderson, and had a long relationship with the group that clearly shows them in their best light. The vocals are great – harmonic and floating, without being hokey – and the tracks groove along with the same sort of gentle bounce you'd expect from late 70s Fantasy sides by the Boppers, Side Effect, and others. Tracks include "Dog House", "Perfect Love", "If You Go", "Wrap You Up", "Christy", and "Well Deserved Rest". CD

Cheryl Lynn's punching up her sound a bit here – working with Hubert Eaves, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and even some of her own productions – in a style that's got a heavier sort of 80s groove than earlier albums, but still mighty nice – and a great change from the disco of her earlier years! CD

A great later album from the Main Ingredient – professional, polished, and filled with wonderful harmony vocals! Maestro Patrick Adams arranged and produced the set – and he gives the record a really wonderful sound that's light years from his indie club work of the early 70s – a tight approach to vocal group soul that still lets the harmonies shine wonderfully, but which also takes them into more mature, sophisticated territory. Cuba Gooding's returned to the group, and his beautiful vocals are a very welcome (re)addition to their sound – and the album's got some key midtempo groovers that stand with some of the group's best work. Titles include "Party People", "Only", "Evening of Love", "Just Once", "All Because of You", "Rediscover Me", and a great modern soul remake of "I Only Have Eyes For You". CD

The sound here is upbeat and positive – lots of bass and keys in the instrumentation, and joyous vocals that soar over the top of the beat from two male lead singers. The production quality is great – on a par with any of the bigger label releases of the time – and titles include "Jennie", "Cover Girl", "I Need You", "Hard To Give It Up", and "Why You Wanna Treat Me Like That". Most of it is co-produced with Don Cornelius, of Soul Train fame, who helped O'Bryan get his start. A good bit of the album has a kicked back, nice and mellow approach – grooving in a modern Capitol Rare mode, with some pop funk bass and elegant strings for good measure. A totally massive set from One Way – a record that has them sounding even better than ever – drawing on all the strengths of the previous few records, and really knocking it out of the park! Although the group's got a great way with a groove, the mellow cuts here are equally nice – including the sublime title number, which begins the set as a sweet stepper – then lets the grooves pick up pace as things move on. Everything's nicely restrained – no overdone boogie modes, or too-funky rhythms that would usually show up on a set like this – and if anything, One Way should be given plenty of props for not just going for the dancefloor – and really coming up with a richly-voiced album like this! One of the greatest albums ever from Al Hudson and One Way – a set that still has the group bristling with loads of funky energy – yet also hitting a groove that's wonderfully smooth as well! One Way were really one of the top of the larger funk combos of the time – and this set's a great illustration of the way they were able to perfectly balance all their different components, and come up with a sound that was lean, mean, and right on the money! Vocals shift a bit from track to track, as does the groove – and although things are upbeat, they're also never disco at all – nor too "fake funk" either. Some moments echo the coming style of 80s groove, but there's also a deeper soul feel overall, too – especially heard in the mellower ballads, which are as great as the uptempo numbers. Titles include "Something In the Past", "Do Your Thang", "Pop It", "I Wanna Be With You", "You're The One", and "Copy This". CD features a bonus track – "Tonight (full length version)". CD

A gem of a smooth soul album – completely rare in the original, and a completely honest soul testament from singer/songwriter Michael Orr! The record's got a sound that reminds us of a lot of the tracks you'll hear on the Modern Soul comps on the Goldmine label – a smooth approach at the base, with touches of soul jazz, and handled with a bit of roughness that makes things sound a lot more real than some of the other soul coming out at the time. Orr's got a real talent for a song – and his commitment to strong vocals can be heard in his mix of styles that recall bits of Andy Bey, bits of Jon Lucien, bits of Gil Scott-Heron, and bits of DJ Rogers. The reissue keeps the original cover – and tracks include "Ecstasy, Fantasy, & Dreamland", "Let Me Be With You Awhile", "Spread Love", "Here I Go (Through These Changes Again)", "Afterwhile", and "You Opened My Eyes To The World". Great later work from Pleasure – a group who are probably best-known for their classic 70s albums on Fantasy Records, but one who kept the groove riding high in some early 80s years at RCA! This set's a shimmering jewel – a great mix of funky rhythms and mellower moments, all wrapped up in that blend of modern soul and 80s groove that RCA was really hitting perfectly for a few key years at the start of the decade. The sound's definitely different than the Fantasy years, but in a way that nicely has the group maturing a bit – changing things up, yet still holding onto all the best elements that made them a cut above most of their contemporaries. Keyboards come in a bit more than before, and there's some really tasty bass-driven numbers – on titles that include "Take It To The Streets", "Sending My Love", "Give It Up", "Sassy Baby", "It's So Hard", "Stone Love", and "All The Way". Rainbow Team, where have you been all our lives? You're a heck of a great little group – and we love the sound you've got on this second album! Sure, we know you're wearing a bunch of silly day-glo costumes on the cover – and that's probably what's made this record slip by our crates in the past – but one listen to the tightness of your grooves, and we're more than willing to forgive you for any bad fashion choices! The sound of the set is totally great – soaring along in the best sort of 80s groove mode – with tight snapping rhythms at the bottom, and a full set of arrangements that bring in some added horns and just the right amount of sweetening strings. And although Rainbow Team are Italian, the record's got a stone American soul sound – very much like the best of the Capitol Rare generation in the US. A groovy little gem from early 80s RCA – a set that sparkles with the same sort of energy as the label's work with Keni Burke at the time! Steven & Sterling are a hip duo who trade vocals back and forth nicely – working over rhythms that are mellow and midtempo, often with a hip undercurrent of jazz as well! The pair worked together previously in the trio Living Proof – but really come into their own here as a duo – with a mature sound that's even better than before. The players are a big factor in the album's sound – and they include Reggie Burke on keyboards, Paul Jackson Jr on guitar, Ollie E Brown on drums – all working with arrangements handled by Sylvester Rivers and the album's producer Tito Jackson – who's surprisingly sharp at the helm of the whole thing. The balance here is great – smooth, but never sleepy – and the record stays away from some of the more chart-friendly modes of the time. An unusual set of 80s grooves from The Temptations – a record that still has the group at the top of their vocal powers, but which also changes up the sound of the rhythms a bit! There's more beats and keyboard lines than before – production that definitely shows the date of the record, but which is still mostly offset by the group's great vocal elements – that old school style of harmony that few of the younger groups could ever get this right. A few tracks are definitely going for some chart play – with a driving groove from the team of Dennis Lambert and Steve Barri (Lambert wrote most of the tracks) – but the record also still has a sound that's different than most of the more commercial soul of the time. A real standout track is the group's version of Sam Dees' "What A Way To Put It" – done here as a soulful ballad – and other tracks include "Love On My Mind Tonight", "The Seeker", "Bring Your Body Here", "Show Me Your Love", and "One Man Woman".
