Atlantic StarrYours Forever ... CD
A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A groovy little classic from Atlantic Starr – and a great example of the group's wonderfully catchy way of hitting a groove! The music's never pop, but has some captivating hooks all the way through – sweet little bits mixed in with the funky soul approach of the ensemble – made even better by the great way the vocals get traded back and forth! There's a careful approach to the whole set – a way of putting things together with a good degree of class – and definitely avoiding most of the cliches that would make a similar project sound a lot more clunky. Great stuff throughout – and titles include "Who Could Love You Better", "Second To None", "Touch A Four Leaf Clover", "Tryin", and "Island Dream". CD

Roy AyersFeeling Good ... CD
Polydor/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Stellar sounds from the great Roy Ayers – an early 80s album for Polydor, but a set that's still got the wonderfully tight, wonderfully groovy feel of his late 70s albums for the label! Roy's really perfected his sense of balance by this time – and does a great job of balancing groovers with sweet mellow steppers – the kind of cool, compressed, jazzy numbers that we love so much! Ayers heads for the clubs one minute, the bedroom the next – and draws us in beautifully whichever direction he takes – thanks to some sublime vibes and electric piano – and great lead vocals from Roy, and other singers who include Terri Wells, Vivian Prince, John King, and Ricky Williams. Titles include "Ooh", "Let's Stay Together", "Feeling Good""Knock Knock", "Turn Me Loose", "Stairway To The Stars", and "Our Time Is Coming". CD

BB & Q BandGenie (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
The last true classic from the masters of the 80s groove genre – a post-Capitol effort for Elektra, but one that's still awash in great keyboards and snapping electro beats! Some of the jazzier sound from the past is gone here, but in its place is a leaner, cleaner sound that's still a fair bit more compelling than most work by the group's contemporaries! Nearly all tracks snap along with rhythms that are nicely placed between the street and the dancefloor – never gimmicky and never too cloying, and tightly focused enough to make the most of the hooks in the vocals. Lots of DX7 on the album, and more than a few numbers have a great sort of breakdance vibe. Tracks include "Riccochet" and "Dreamer" – both remixed by Shep Pettibone –"On The Shelf", "Genie", "Main Attraction", and "Don't Force It". CD features 6 bonus tracks – including "Dreamer (no 1 rmx)", "Main Attraction (finest rmx)", "Dreamer (Shep's dream version)", "Riccochet (Ben Liebrand mix)", and "Dreamer (Shep Pettibone long voc version)". Peabo BrysonDon't Play With Fire ... CD
Capitol/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Tremendous work from Peabo Bryson – and a record that really has him coming on strong, and staying long! Bryson's vocals are sublime – rooted in gospel depth, but turned towards some warmer secular modes – all wrapped up in a style that's tight, but never slick – perfect production by Peabo himself, with a care and sensitivity that's quite different than some of his later, clunkier work. Bryson is still a mighty fresh talent at this point in his career – glowing with an inner light that really shines through – on tracks that include "Go For It", "We Don't Have To Talk", "Turn It On", "Words", "Let Me Be The One You Need", "Give Me Your Love", and "Don't Play With Fire". Jean CarnTrust Me ... CD
Motown/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A near-lost chapter in the career of Jean Carn – her one and only album recorded for Motown, cut in the early 80s with production by Norman Connors! Oddly, although Connors was the first producer to give Jean Carn a chance back in the 70s as a smooth soul vocalist – finding her voice a perfect fit for his warm and jazzy arrangements – here, he's going for a style that's a bit more conventionally soul-based, with more guitars and mainstream production than you'd expect. Jean's still pretty great, though, showing why she was one of the best female soul artists of the modern soul era – on tunes that include "My Baby Loves Me", "Don't Let Me Slip Away", "Steady On My Mind", "Completeness", and "Better To Me". Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – working here under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". CD

ControllersFor The Love Of My Woman ... CD
MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1987. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
An overlooked gem from The Controllers – one issued a bit late to be part of the classic wave of group soul, but a set that's still overflowing with really old school harmonies! The Controllers really have a wonderful way of putting over a ballad – letting things build slow and mellow, trading lead parts and harmonies together in a way that really moves the message forward, while never overdoing things too much in search of a hook. And even when the instrumentation is contemporary, it never gets in the way of the vocals – and almost always lays back once the lyrics come in, even on the album's few groovers. Titles include "For The Love Of My Woman", "My Secret Fantasy", "Love Is On Our Side", "Play Time", "Sleeping Alone", "Knocking At Your Door", and "No One's Ever Loved Me More". CD

MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
The Dramatics hit an 80s groove mood here – and as on their clubbier sides from the end of the 70s, the vocals are still wonderful – and more than anything, the set's a strong soul-based set that still has the group at the top of their game! Ballads actually sparkle the best here – and showcase that wonderfully full mode that was the best side of The Dramatics harmonies – but the uptempo tunes are good, and have breakout moments that sparkle nicely. Production is by Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds, but Don Davis still oversees the whole thing – and titles include "It Ain't Rainin", "Wecome Back Home", "Love Is Here", "Be With The One You Love", and "Music Is The Peoples Choice". Gwen GuthriePortrait (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes of Harry Whitaker, Bernie Worrell, and Wally Badarou – all massive talents that bring a nice sweet jazzy sound to the best cuts on the record. There's a definite 80s sing-song groove going on – in that not-yet-top-of-the-charts soul sound that you'd hear on the better small urban stations at the time – moving back and forth nicely, in a strong link between the mainstream and the underground clubs! Tracks include "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Oh What A Life", "Younger Than Me", and a nice cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Padlock (Larry Levan special mix)", "Hopscotch (Larry Levan rmx inst)", and "Peanut Butter (Larry Levan special mix)". CD

Randy HallI Belong To You ... CD
MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A catchy slice of mid 80s soul from Randy Hall – an excellent musician who handles quite a bit of the instrumentation, on top of being a charismatic singer – and this one's produced by Ray Parker Jr, whose ear for catchy hooks is in top form! Hall spins a lot of plates on his own – most of the vocals, some guitar, bass, keys and programming – but there's a lot of other great players in the studio, including producer Parker – and that dedication to real musicianship puts I Belong To You on higher level than a lot of pop soul, circa '84! Great stuff! Includes "I've Been Watching You (Jamie's Girl)", "A Gentleman", "Feel My Eyes", "She's My Little Star", 'I Want To Touch You", "I Belong To You", "A Real Man" and more. CD

A classic album of all-out soul from Herbie Hancock – done in close collaboration with Rod Temperton of Heatwave – in a jazzy-styled version of that group's own great groove! Temperton handled arrangements and a lot of songwriting, and most cuts have lead vocals from Wayne Anthony – who does a nice job with the lyrics, but still leaves Herbie some space for keyboard solos too – in a groove that's a fair bit warmer than some of the other keyboard-heavy soul records of the time. Production is by Narada Michael Walden, Herbie, and Jay Graydon – and titles include the jazzy stepping gem "Getting To The Good Part", plus "Lite Me Up", "The Bomb", "Can't Hide Your Love", "The Fun Tracks", and "Motor Mouth". Solid 80s grooving soul from Howard Johnson – a singer who'd worked often with other, bigger artists – but who only cut a handful of albums under his own name. The set's got a lot of production help from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who make their presence known in the record's electrified bass and keys approach – but it's Johnson's strong presence as a lead singer that really holds the set together – a sweet little groover! Post-Philly, and the girls are working here with Fonzi Thornton and Robert Wright – who choose to start off the album with a silly bit of dialogue that has them talking to the singers from the production booth (possibly letting them know that Gamble & Huff are no longer in charge!) Here's a record that we dig a whole lot more than we remember – with a crisp, bright period production vibe that's kind of come full circle after all these years. The girls shoot for that popular 80s mode and they hit the mark – bullseye! Titles include "On Target", "I Can Make A Difference", "Curious", "I'm A Woman Here", "Knockin", and "2 Win U Back". CD

RCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A pretty sweet soul group from the mid 80s scene – one that's been a bit overlooked over the years, but who have a sound that's right up there with the best of their big name contemporaries! At some points, these guys have a way of harmonizing along with electro funk that reminds us a lot of The Jacksons during the 80s – and we mean that in the best way possible – and other cuts almost seem to borrow a bit of inspiration from the Paisley Park generation, especially in the way there's a nicely chunky vibe to the funk! There's even some occasional electro soul touches – either in the keyboards, or in rare spots in the beats – and the whole thing's the kind of album that's got plenty to offer for any fan of funky 80s soul. Titles include "She's Stacked", "Split Personality", "Reconsider", "Rainy Night", "Head On Collision", "Private Spot", "I Love You So", and "Can't Let Go". CD

A great later album from the Main Ingredient – professional, polished, and filled with wonderful harmony vocals! Maestro Patrick Adams arranged and produced the set – and he gives the record a really wonderful sound that's light years from his indie club work of the early 70s – a tight approach to vocal group soul that still lets the harmonies shine wonderfully, but which also takes them into more mature, sophisticated territory. Cuba Gooding's returned to the group, and his beautiful vocals are a very welcome (re)addition to their sound – and the album's got some key midtempo groovers that stand with some of the group's best work. Titles include "Party People", "Only", "Evening of Love", "Just Once", "All Because of You", "Rediscover Me", and a great modern soul remake of "I Only Have Eyes For You". CD

Most of it is co-produced with Don Cornelius, of Soul Train fame, who helped O'Bryan get his start. A good bit of the album has a kicked back, nice and mellow approach – grooving in a modern Capitol Rare mode, with some pop funk bass and elegant strings for good measure. Tracks include "It's Over", "Love Has Found Its Way", "Doin Alright", "Can't Live Without Your Love", and "Still Water (Love)". CD

One WayOne Way Featuring Al Hudson (1980) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
One of the greatest albums ever from Al Hudson and One Way – a set that still has the group bristling with loads of funky energy – yet also hitting a groove that's wonderfully smooth as well! One Way were really one of the top of the larger funk combos of the time – and this set's a great illustration of the way they were able to perfectly balance all their different components, and come up with a sound that was lean, mean, and right on the money! Vocals shift a bit from track to track, as does the groove – and although things are upbeat, they're also never disco at all – nor too "fake funk" either. Some moments echo the coming style of 80s groove, but there's also a deeper soul feel overall, too – especially heard in the mellower ballads, which are as great as the uptempo numbers. Titles include "Something In the Past", "Do Your Thang", "Pop It", "I Wanna Be With You", "You're The One", and "Copy This". CD features a bonus track – "Tonight (full length version)". CD

A bit of a change from previous Ozone albums – a set that still has plenty of bass at the bottom, but also a fair bit of keyboards as well – stretching out nicely over the top, almost with a bit of an electro pop feel at points! The keys really make for a catchy sort of edge – not just the usual bassy soul from Rick James-era Motown, but a slightly more complicated vibe that's really trying for something new at times. The set also features a few mellower ballads that are surprisingly great – sensitive moments we wouldn't have guessed from the group – and titles include "You Don't Want My Love", "I Can't Wait", "Glasses", "Strutt My Thang", and "Don't Leave Me Now". Great later work from Pleasure – a group who are probably best-known for their classic 70s albums on Fantasy Records, but one who kept the groove riding high in some early 80s years at RCA! This set's a shimmering jewel – a great mix of funky rhythms and mellower moments, all wrapped up in that blend of modern soul and 80s groove that RCA was really hitting perfectly for a few key years at the start of the decade. The sound's definitely different than the Fantasy years, but in a way that nicely has the group maturing a bit – changing things up, yet still holding onto all the best elements that made them a cut above most of their contemporaries. Keyboards come in a bit more than before, and there's some really tasty bass-driven numbers – on titles that include "Take It To The Streets", "Sending My Love", "Give It Up", "Sassy Baby", "It's So Hard", "Stone Love", and "All The Way". Starpoint's getting a bit loose and free with their fashions on the cover of this one – but the grooves themselves are tighter than ever! If anything, Starpoint seems to be a lot more confident than before – working in a mode that's completely free from late 70s trends, but which also doesn't fall into the traps of others of their generation – a sound that's electric and funky, yet also plenty darn soulful too. Renee Diggs' vocals are completely great on the album – bringing in a depth that's really appreciated, and giving the group a much more well-rounded sound than so many other all male ensemble funk acts of the time. Ballads and mellower numbers are every bit as great as the groovers too – and titles include "All Night Long", "Get Your Body Up", "Bring Your Sweet Lovin Back", "Show Me", "I Can Give You Love", and "It's You". The ensemble is much smaller this time around – not a large funky group, but just a quartet – and one with a tight focus and jazzy groove that really matches some of the best modern soul on Capitol Records at the time – music that's really a cut above most of the chart soul of the time, and a perfect fusion of all the best mainstream elements of late 70s funky soul – given a leaner push towards the new generation! Keyboards glide wonderfully alongside T Coakley's great lead vocals – and titles include "Tonight's The Night", "Time Is Short", "The Game Of Life", "Love Odyssey", "Is It Real", "Closer To Home", "Superstar", and "I've Got News For You". The music's got that great 80s groove approach that Capitol Records excelled at during the time – and the group's a bit more compressed than before – just a quintet, with heavy contributions from Theophilus Coakley on lead vocals, keyboards, songwriting, and production! An unusual set of 80s grooves from The Temptations – a record that still has the group at the top of their vocal powers, but which also changes up the sound of the rhythms a bit! There's more beats and keyboard lines than before – production that definitely shows the date of the record, but which is still mostly offset by the group's great vocal elements – that old school style of harmony that few of the younger groups could ever get this right. A few tracks are definitely going for some chart play – with a driving groove from the team of Dennis Lambert and Steve Barri (Lambert wrote most of the tracks) – but the record also still has a sound that's different than most of the more commercial soul of the time. A real standout track is the group's version of Sam Dees' "What A Way To Put It" – done here as a soulful ballad – and other tracks include "Love On My Mind Tonight", "The Seeker", "Bring Your Body Here", "Show Me Your Love", and "One Man Woman". A crowning moment from the Chicago scene of the late 70s – the second Mercury album from Heaven & Earth, and a stunner all the way through! The set's an undisputed groover right from the start – thanks to the massive arrangements from the great Floyd Morris – an artist who did some excellent work in the Chicago indie soul scene in the 60s, including some classic funky 45s – and whose work here definitely gives Heaven & Earth a sharper edge than most other acts of their type at the time! A great little soul album from Herbie Hancock – but one that's often lost in the valleys between his bigger hits of the time! The record was cut in the space right before Herbie's big "Rockit" success – and it's a sweet bit of funky fusion that has a good dose of R&B in the mix – similar to other records from Hancock's Columbia label keyboardist contemporaries – like Rodney Franklin, Webster Lewis, or Charles Earland! All orchestrations are performed by Herbie on a host of keyboards and synthesizers, and just about every cut has vocals – from singers who include Sylvester, Gavin Christopher, and The Waters. But even with this soul component, Herbie still keeps things jazzy – using a good bit of keyboards to open up the tunes in the middle, and hitting hard on all numbers with that classic Hancock approach to funk! A great entry in this long-running collection – a series that's really evolved over the years, as you'll hear on this CD! Masterpiece was never about straight disco at the start – it always focused on more obscure post-disco tracks from the early 80s – and by the time of this volume, the label's shifted a lot more towards the second half of the decade – so that you've got a range of very cool 80s groove numbers that fly way below the radar! The first album by Atlantic Starr – a tight set of modern soul tunes with a very different feel than their later work! Part of the credit goes to Bobby Eli – who arranged and produced the set, giving it a feel that's almost late Philly – tight, sophisticated, and right on the money at all the best points! There's a number of sweet mellow ballads with lead vocals by Sharon Bryant, and other tracks that groove in an uptempo way that points towards more of the group's 80s work – a great mix of modes that makes for a really well-developed album right out of the gate. Titles include "Gimme Your Lovin", "The Love I Never Had", "Visions", "Keep It Comin", "Stand Up", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "We Got It Together", and "Being In Love With You Is So Much Fun". CD features a bonus track – "Stand Up (single version)". CD

✨✧ Roy AyersLove Fantasy ... CD
Polydor/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Roy Ayers albums of all time – and an overlooked gem from Roy's late 70s years at Polydor! This set's a bit more laidback and less clubby than some other Ayers work of the period – which means it's got this wonderful jazzy groove throughout – a sweet mix of midtempo modern soul and the vibes-based style that Roy kept on perfecting at the time. Tracks are longer than usual, and they really open up in a way that fits the title – slinky and seductive, but never soppy or commercial at all – that really special blend of warmth and wisdom that's always made Roy Ayers so great. Titles include the sublime title track "Love Fantasy", which begins with Roy chatting up some girl in the intro, then sliding into a nice smooth jazz funk tip on the chorus – plus the great cut "Sigh", a sweet little bubbling number with a wonderfully breathy quality! Other titles include "Believe In Yourself", "Betcha Gonna", "Baby Bubba", and "Rock Your Roll". CD

✨✧ DramaticsAny Time Any Place ... CD
ABC/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the excellent recordings made by The Dramatics at ABC – great group soul gems that are sometimes overlooked because they didn't yield as many hits as earlier sets – but which are stellar records nonetheless! This one's got all the right elements firmly in place – killer production by Don Davis, and smooth but real harmonies from LJ Reynolds, Ron Banks, and the rest of the group. There's a few tracks that hit a smooth sort of groove that might be tagged as "disco" – but which is really just an extension of the super-dope mode that the group used in earlier years – and which has a lot more to offer than just a cheap dancefloor cash in. Titles include "Life Is Just A Playground", "Love Birds", "A Marriage On Paper Only", "I'm Hooked On You", "That's My Favorite Song", "I Think About You", and "I Just Wanna Dance With You". CD

Columbia/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The third album in Billy Griffin's great run after leaving The Miracles – and a set that features some especially nice help from mellow groove maestro Leon Ware! Ware brings a depth to the record that takes it way past Billy's outdated look on the cover – that trademark ear for a killer midtempo groove that few other songwriters or producers could match – and which proves to be just the right setting for Billy's beautiful vocals! Instrumentation is heavy on beats and keyboards, with a definite electro approach – but there's a warmth here that goes way past the setting, both vocally and in the way the tunes come across. Titles include a remake of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" – plus "Can't Keep Running Away", "This Ain't Puppy Love", "Electrified", "Systematic", "Everybody Needs Somebody", and "Waiting To Touch". CD

✨✧ Heaven & EarthFantasy ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
You can definitely hear Floyd's touch in the funky bottom of the two-part classic "I Feel A Groove Under My Feet", and in the riffing guitar of "Poetry In A Box" – and the group also show their warmer, mellower side nicely on cuts like "Let's Get It Together", "I'm In Love With Your Lady", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Whole Lot Of Love" – nice warm numbers with great harmonies and gentle stepping grooves! Funky grooves merge into sweet soulful moments – on this wonderful debut from an obscure Chicago group! The music is clubby at points, but also mellows out at others – mixing bassy grooves with spacier moments that have an especially nice vibe – and which really showcase a sophisticated modern soul side of the group! And the production work features plenty of old talents from Brunswick Records – including Chicago soul giants Carl Davis, Eugene Record, and Sonny Sanders – who really put the record together with a lot of care, at a level that should have made these guys huge. A great lost set, but well worth discovering – and tracks include "Volcanic Voodoo", "Take It To The Top", "What Makes You Wanna Lie To Me", "You're My Everything", "Show Him The Way To Go", and "Worry". Capitol/PTG (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
O'Bryan's virtually a one man show here – handling vocals, keyboards, arrangements, and other instrumental bits too – but he also gets some great help on the album's lean arrangements, with just the right sort of funky touches on guitar, bass, and drums! The set starts out with a tighter, funkier feel than we remember from O'Bryan's other work – a nice link between 80s groove styles and late 70s mainstream funk – with the leader's vocals wrapped very nicely around the grooves! But as the set moves on, it's the ballads and mellower cuts that really win us – tunes that move a bit slower, but still have a nice bite in the rhythm, with a sweet laidback stepping vibe. Titles include "Lovelite", "Be My Lover", "Go On & Cry", "Breakin Together", "You're Always On My Mind", and "Too Hot". CD

A totally massive set from One Way – a record that has them sounding even better than ever – drawing on all the strengths of the previous few records, and really knocking it out of the park! Although the group's got a great way with a groove, the mellow cuts here are equally nice – including the sublime title number, which begins the set as a sweet stepper – then lets the grooves pick up pace as things move on. Everything's nicely restrained – no overdone boogie modes, or too-funky rhythms that would usually show up on a set like this – and if anything, One Way should be given plenty of props for not just going for the dancefloor – and really coming up with a richly-voiced album like this! Titles include "Love Is", "My Lady", "Wait Until Tomorrow", "Push", "I Didn't Mean to Break Your Heart", and "All Over Again". CD

Damn, One Way never lets us down – and although the group cut many albums back in the day, all of them have some great standout moments! The groove here seems even tighter than ever, but never slick or commercial – a very important distinction, given that so many of One Way's contemporaries really let things slide as they headed for the pop charts. Not so with Al Hudson and group, though – as they always know how to balance things out with all the best elements they had from the start – a good mix of upbeat groovers and some mellower steppers – the latter of which really make us love the record. Titles include the smooth stepper "More Than Friends, Less Than Lovers", which features lead vocals by Ewana Wilson, and some sweet harmonies by the Ridgeways that really make the track – and other titles include "Let's Talk", "Serving It", "Condemned", and "If I Knew". PTG (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a smooth soul album – completely rare in the original, and a completely honest soul testament from singer/songwriter Michael Orr! The record's got a sound that reminds us of a lot of the tracks you'll hear on the Modern Soul comps on the Goldmine label – a smooth approach at the base, with touches of soul jazz, and handled with a bit of roughness that makes things sound a lot more real than some of the other soul coming out at the time. Orr's got a real talent for a song – and his commitment to strong vocals can be heard in his mix of styles that recall bits of Andy Bey, bits of Jon Lucien, bits of Gil Scott-Heron, and bits of DJ Rogers. The reissue keeps the original cover – and tracks include "Ecstasy, Fantasy, & Dreamland", "Let Me Be With You Awhile", "Spread Love", "Here I Go (Through These Changes Again)", "Afterwhile", and "You Opened My Eyes To The World". Steamin' Hot early 80s grooves from The Reddings! It's Aanice mix of slap-bass funk and mellower numbers – with the more laidback and mellow tunes winning out in our book! The funkier ones are nice, too – but the smoother tunes have an easygoing style of trading leads through harmonies that gives them an overall more put together feel. Great work from the wonderful Rockie Robbins – a smooth soul singer who cut some great sides at the start of the 80s, but who hardly ever gets his due! Bobby Martin's working with Rockie on this effort – giving the set that warmly gliding mode that made Martin's productions some of the best in late 70s mainstream soul – a sound that's clearly informed by Philly, but which also has room for mellower, and more sophisticated modes as well. Tracks include a number of Sam Dees compositions – "Hang Tough", "After Loving You", "Girl I'm Gonna Get Ya", and "For The Sake Of A Memory" – plus the tracks "Together", "Point Of View", "Lost In Love Again", and "I Never Knew". Sublime soul from Superior Movement – an overlooked Chicago group of the 80s, but one that's every bit as wonderful as any of the bigger acts we can think of from the time! The group definitely put harmonies first in their music – and although the album's a bigger-label effort, the vocals have the wonderfully personal feel of smaller label harmony soul from years back – retooled a bit with 80s instrumentation, which makes for a surprisingly great mix with the lyrics. Things are tight, but never too smooth – very well balanced, with none of the too-commercial missteps that other groups were making at the time – and titles include "The Key To Your Heart", "For You", "Come Fly With Me", "Lost Affair", "Guilty", "Sweet Dreams", and "Be My Cinderella". The early 80s debut from singer, songwriter Gary Taylor – also playing Rhodes, piano and synth on this set – filled with nicely grooving 80s soul! The songs are solid, and though he'd go on to write songs for a number of soul and R&B stars, he lets these numbers build slowly into the hooks and choruses. There's lots of bouncing keys and drum machine thump and washes of synth – and nice, funky bass lines. A great 80s set from The Temptations – one of the few Motown acts who managed to deliver great work again and again over the years! The production has some 80s traces that are slightly dated, but the vocals are still top-shelf all the way – strongly moved much more into a mellow and modern mode than the group's righteous 70s years, but still plenty darn soulful for our ears – and proof that no matter what the lineup, or the setting, The Temptations could always come out with some top-shelf work! The record's got a nicely balanced feel that most younger groups of the time would have done well to consider – and titles include "Running", "Treat Her Like A Lady", "My Love Is True", "Set Your Love Right", "I'll Keep My Light In The Window", and "Memories". A real 80s groover from Lillo Thomas – plenty of keyboards, snapping rhythms, and a sweetly gliding rhythm that beautifully supports Thomas' high-pitched vocals! The style owes a fair bit to territory first hit by Michael Jackson at the end of the 70s, but it still sounds surprisingly great after all these years – a style of soul that's unabashedly focused on the hooks, but which comes off with a fair bit of integrity too – thanks to a batch of nearly all original tunes by Thomas, co-written with keyboardist/arranger Paul Lawrence Jones. There's a lean groove to the record that holds up perfectly throughout, and never loses its energy – and titles include "I Love It", "Trust Me", "Who Do You Think You Are", "Hot Love", "You're A Good Girl", and "Joy Of Your Love". Cheryl Lynn's punching up her sound a bit here – working with Hubert Eaves, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and even some of her own productions – in a style that's got a heavier sort of 80s groove than earlier albums, but still mighty nice – and a great change from the disco of her earlier years! Lynn's vocals, as always, are totally top-shelf – more than bold enough to soar over whatever groove she'd choose – although in this case, the groove is right on the money – definitely as right as the title implies! A different sound than the Manhattans of the 70s – but a set that's still got some wonderful harmonies throughout! The production has a modern sort of 80s crackle – more beats and keyboards than before, but also some standout acapella moments that hearken back to an old school style of group soul that even predates the first recordings by The Manhattans back in the 60s. This mix of modern and classic really gives the album some weight – and is balanced out nicely through the set list – with tracks that include "Don't Say No", "Angel Of The Night", "You Send Me", "C'Est La Vie", "Dreamin", "Too Hot To Stop It", and "When We Are Made As One".
