Steve GrossmanTerra Firma ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 1975/1976. Used ... $13.99
A stone slammer from saxophonist Steve Grossman – and a set that's served up in the same funky style as the best work by the related Stone Alliance combo! The core trio features tremendous interplay between the hard-biting tenor of Steve Grossman the funky bass of Gene Perla, and slamming drums and percussion of Don Alias – and the set also features some great contributions from Jan Hammer on keyboard – playing Fender Rhodes and moog with a wonderfully funky, soulful style – quite different than some of his more jamming work with other artists. There's a really sharp, angular feel to the whole set – electric grooves that are heavy on rhythms, yet also have a nice sense of freedom on the tenor – and titles include "This Way Out", "Inmate Man", "Katonah", "Enya", and "In It". Elvin Jones with Jan Hammer & Gene PerlaElvin Jones Is On The Mountain ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 1975. Used ... $13.99
An overlooked gem from Elvin Jones' mid 70s years – and a sweet fusion jammer that has the best kick of the classics on the PM label! The group's a trio, with Jones on drums, Gene Perla on bass, and Jan Hammer on drums – and Elvin may be the leader of the set, but the real strength of the album belongs to the record's tight bass work by the great Perla – strong-voiced and soulful, and doing a good job here of keeping both Jones and Hammer focused on the groove of the tunes – as Hammer's keyboards spin out with lots of sweet cosmic touches! Titles include "Namuh", "On The Mountain", "Smoke In The Sun", "Destiny", and "London Air". CD

David LaingOne Chord Wonders – Power & Meaning In Punk Rock ... Book
PM, 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 17.95
One of the first books to ever get past the hype and really dig into the political power of punk rock – not just the music itself, but the way its rise helped reshape the world of music at the end of the 70s, and set the scene for generations to come! The book was first published in the mid 80s, but is every bit as essential today – penned with a fair bit of then-contemporary theory that ties British punk to the politics, economy, and larger cultural scene in England – with helpful end chapters that include a discography, timeline, and bibliography. This edition features a new introduction by TV Smith of The Adverts – and the book is softcover, and 213 pages. Book

David LiebmanSolo – Memories Dreams & Reflections ... CD
PM/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $16.99
David Liebman plays solo, but not in a way that's spare or lonely at all – as the record often features Dave overdubbing himself on a variety of instruments – including soprano sax, flute, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards! Liebman jokingly refers to the record in the notes as "playing with myself", but the approach is much better than that – and instead creates one of the most personal, poetic albums we've ever heard from the legendary reedman. Titles include "Hiroshima Memorial", "Guided Dream", "Words", "The Power Of The Cross", and "Translucence". CD

PM/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99
A powerful little trio – and one of the boldest setting that reedman Dave Liebman recorded in during the 70s! The Open Sky combo features Dave on a range of reeds – tenor, soprano, and alto flute – plus a bit of acoustic piano and percussion too – often working with these long lines that are very spiritual and progressive, but neither too jamming, nor too outside at all! Bassist Frank Tusa's got this warm, round tone that really deepens the record – and drummer Bob Moses is at his best in helping to bring just the right sort of spark to the music. The best tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Bugs Bunny", "Mfwala Myo Lala", "Striving For Truth", and "Amy". CD

PM, 1981. Near Mint- ... $11.99
One of the few records ever cut by the great keyboardist Bernie Senesky – a player who did some of his finest work ever for the ultra-hip PM Records label! This set's got Bernie on both acoustic and electric piano – and the artist handles the keys with this sensitivity that's really appreciated – an ability to move fast and really take flight, but never in a way that's too jamming, or show-offy at all – and still very much with the lyrical qualities that have always made him such a great surprise. The group's a quartet – with added percussion from Don Alias to complicate the rhythms nicely – alongside bass from David Piltch and drums from Terry Clarke. Titles include "Homeland", "Adam", "No More Tears", "Silver Trane", "Free Spirit", and "Reunion". LP, Vinyl record album

A great little record from Bernie Senesky – a Canadian pianist who doesn't always get the recognition he deserves on this side of the border, but who can always blow us away! Bernie's got a fantastic command of the piano – this bold, wide range at times – but also with more lyrically sensitive moments too – a balance of energy that always keeps things exciting, and which comes across with a sense of warmth that's really wonderful. The trio features the mighty Gene Perla on bass and Ben Riley on drums – really matching Bernie's groove – and titles include "Bill's Waltz", "Old Folks", "Invitation", "Come To Me", "Blues For EJ", "Bud Lines", and "Young & Foolish". PM/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
A rare European performance from the Stone Alliance trio – one that was recorded at the same time as their legendary run of albums for the PM label, but never issued at the time! The tracks are nice and long here, and the group really break out – still every bit as tight as on their well-remembered albums of hard funk and heavy jazz, but with some freer elements at times – especially from Steve Grossman's tenor on his long solos, and also from percussionist Don Alias on one long track that's just a 9 minute solo on congas! Other titles include a nice reading of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin", plus "Samba De Negro", "Sweetie Pie", "King Tut", and "Taurus People". CD

A really great setting for this legendary 70s combo – a record that has the core Stone Alliance trio coming into play with a host of Argentine musicians who really open up their sound! The core energy is still super-sharp – that magical combination of the saxes of Steve Grossman, bass of Gene Perla, and drums of Don Alias – but the sound takes on whole new dimensions with added keyboards, percussion, and bandoneon – used in different ways throughout to create warmer, lyrical elements. The lineup here is a bit different than earlier Stone Alliance records – Bob Mintzer handles the reeds, blowing soprano, tenor, bass clarinet, and flute – and Kenny Kirkland plays both keyboards and piano – while the core energy generation unit of Gene Perla on bass and Don Alias on drums really keep things moving. Beautifully choppy jazz from Steve Grossman and his legendary 70s comrades Gene Perla and Don Alias – one of the heaviest hitting American combos of the time! The trio have a tight fusion sound that's as full-on as it is funky – and Grossman blows some amazing work on tenor and soprano sax that cut into the tunes with a really fierce bite – while Perla delivers these round, powerful basslines – and Don Alias alternates between free percussion and some driving funky drums! For this session, the group's joined by Jan Hammer on electric piano and moog, playing in a nicely restrained fashion that's not nearly as overblown as his later work, and which jams into the groove just perfectly – making for a sweet electric set that's a real standout of the 70s. The set includes the breakbeat track "Zulu Stomp", plus "Alodian Mode", "Haresah", and "Extemporaneous Combustion". LP, Vinyl record album

PM/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic live performance from drummer Elvin Jones – done in 1971 as part of a John Coltrane Memorial Concert – and a record that maybe shows just how much Jones had grown as a leader in the few short years after Coltrane's death! The album features two long, very freewheeling tracks – "Shinjitu" and "Simone" – certainly inspired by the freedoms allowed by the Coltrane Quartet of the 60s, but taken in really dynamic directions that not only come from the drums of Elvin, but also the bold, rich work of Gene Perla on bass – as the pair really drive things from the bottom, really encouraging some great sounds from Chick Corea on piano, Frank Foster on tenor and soprano, and Joe Farrell on tenor and flute. PM/Solid (Japan), 1975/1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing little group – and one of the real standouts in indie jazz during the 70s! Stone Alliance are a killer power trio made up of players who'd previously worked for Elvin Jones – and all three of them have inherited a frenzied sense of rhythm from Jones – and that great sharp edge he brought to his initial early recordings in the post-Coltrane years! But there's also a deeper sound going on here, too – a bit of funk, and definitely a bit of Latin in the percussion and basslines – which makes for these grooves that are as complicated as they are infectious – often given some sweet spiritual tones from the reeds on top! The lineup features Steve Grossman on tenor and soprano sax, Gene Perla on bass, and Don Alias on drums and percussion – all working together with tremendous energy, but a great focus too – always soulful, and never too jamming at all. Titles include the insane break track "Sweetie Pie", plus Stevie Wonder's "Creepin", "Duet", "King Tut", "Samba De Negro" and "Vaya Mulatto". CD

PM/Solid (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet little set from Candian guitarist Ed Bickert – a record that's filled with amazing tones and colors, and which sparkles brightly from the very first note! The date's a trio outing – with Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums – but Bickert's playing gives the whole thing a quality that's very different than any sort of traditional jazz guitar set like this – thanks to a style that shows a knowledge of 70s innovators like Pat Martino and John Abercrombie, but a sense of soul that keeps the whole thing nice and solid – in a very classic way. The set's got an airy feel, but is deeply grounded too – and at times, Bickert almost seems to echo the unique phrasing of his Canadian contemporary Sonny Greenwich. Titles include "Where Are You", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "It Might As Well Be Spring", and "Manha De Carnaval". CD

Pat plays tenor, soprano, and flute – and at times, he's going for the harder-jamming PM sound – with those sharp edges in the rhythms you'd expect from Perla and Labarbera – but at others, he kicks back and blows with surprising soulfulness that brings some great lyrical moments to the set – this sense of soul that we really love. The music has a nice mix of dynamic energy, of the sort you'd ear on other PM Records releases – and some mellower, more laidback moments that seem especially well-suited to Riley's talents on the keyboard. The rest of the group features Michael Stuart on tenor and soprano sax, Don Thompson on bass, and Claude Ranger on drums – and side two features the 19 minute "Dreams", a really beautiful tune – and side one features a version of "Chunga's Revenge", plus "In My Life", "Earth", and "Blue Dream". Stone Alliance move down to a duo here – the mighty team of Don Alias on drums and Gene Perla on bass – and the pair bring in a whole host of great guest stars to take the place of recently-departed reedman Steve Grossman! To us, the record would be more than great enough on its own with just the grooves of Perla and Alias – but the set really warms up from contributions by artists who include Michael Brecker on tenor, Dave Liebeman on reeds, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Alex Acuna on percussion, and Jan Hammer on keyboards – keeping things as tight and focused as on his best 70s funky fusion outings. Perla and Alias keep things tight and choppy in the rhythms – a nice undercurrent of funk on most tracks – and titles include "Pedra Da Lua", "Trampoline", "Aunt Remus", "Tribute To Afreeka", and "Uncle Jemima". Full-on sounds from the mighty Stone Alliance trio – a record that comes on strong right from the start, then doesn't let up for a minute! We love the studio albums from this group in the 70s, but they seem especially on fire on this live date from the late 70s – a firey fusion of the tenor of Steve Grossman, bass of Gene Perla, and drums and percussion of Don Alias! As much as Grossman sounds great in later years, he's got an extra special sort of quality here – one that really makes the album soar with his soulful, almost spiritual solos – which are often brought back nicely to earth from the funkier currents of the bass and drums. Kathyrn's as great a singer as she is an instrumentalist – and the album offers equal parts of her talents – stepping out with a style that's often a bit funky at the bottom, with an electric mixture of flute, guitars, percussion, and bass. Gene Perla produced the record, and it's got a fair bit of choppy grooves that are right up there in the best PM Records mode – more proof that the Canadian scene could groove nicely when it wanted. ✨✧ Gene AmmonsJust Jug ... LP
Argo, Early 60s. Very Good- ... $9.99
One of those shady little sessions that Gene Ammons cut for Argo when he wasn't supposed to be recording for anyone but Prestige – and a great album that never got full circulation because of contract difficulties. The group on the album features organist Eddie Buster, who'd backed Jug or Stitt in other settings from the same time – and it's a hard grooving record that figures with some of Ammons' best early 60s work on record. The "just" part probably means that Sonny Stitt doesn't join in on tenor on the record – which is fine by us, because Ammons grooves hard in the album's live recorded setting. Titles include "PM AM", "Fast Track", "Foot Tappin", and "Scrapple From The Apple". LP, Vinyl record album

A group with a sound that you'll never be able to pronounce – but with a sound that's instantly accessible, and which goes right to the heart of the matter in a great mix of funky fusion and more rock-styled touches! The lineup is pretty straightforward – keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums – but these guys have a great way of really coming up with unusual grooves and unusual phrasings – moments that clearly have a knowledge of freer jazz, but never go that far out – and performances from musicians who clearly know the world of prog, but also keep things tighter and groovier too! In a way, the feel of the record isn't too far from the early 70s Placebo albums with Marc Moulin – but maybe less keyboard-centric than those sets, and with tight rhythmic elements that also echo some of the funky fusion of the PM Records label. Tracks include "Hoppel", "Hetero", "Bruch", "Zinky", and "Malaga". LP, Vinyl record album

A cool 70s set from Japanese drummer George Otsuka – much more fusion-based than his work of the 60s, with some great help from an assortment of American and Japanese players! Many tunes have an angular, searching sort of feel – but there's also a nice dose of funk too, choppier rhythms that make the album a lot more sharp-edged than other Japanese fusion of the time. Steve Grossman's in the group on soprano sax, and you can definitely hear his influence – as there's almost a PM Records vibe to the set at times. Other players include John Abercrombie on guitar, Miroslav Vitous on bass, Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, and both Richie Beirach and Masabumi Kikuchi on keyboards, including a fair bit of Fender Rhodes. Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The title totally gets it right – as the album features sound library giants Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett coming completely full circle – emerging again to give us the same sort of grooves they recorded for KPM back in the 70s! The album's a new one, but it's got the complete sound of the 70s all the way through – fantastic production, sublime instrumentation, and just the right way of putting things together with that no-nonsense sound library approach! BuariDisco Soccer (2 x 45rpm pressing) ... LP
Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 32.99
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". LP, Vinyl record album
(Features the album pressed up on 2LPs, each of which play at 45rpm for extra added fidelity!)

Sidiku BuariRevolution – Live Disco Show In New York City (180 gram pressing – 2 x 45rpm) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 28.99
One of the coolest records ever issued by Sidiku Buari – the Ghanian musician who also recorded just as Buari – stepping out here in a very unusual performance recorded live at a club in New York at the end of the 70s! Side one begins with this great crowd frenzy and very cool energy as Buari's group take off running – mixing West African modes with more American boogie and funk elements – in a blend that has lots of riffing guitar and some especially groovy keyboard parts! Side two features studio material, but still pretty darn great – and maybe touched with a slight inspiration from Jamaica in some of the dubbier rhythms. There's some nicely weird sounds that are a bit hard to identify, and which cut against some of the sweeter vocal moments – on titles that include "Together We Can Rebuild It", "Revolution", "Keep The Rhythm Going", "Ofey Karambani", "This Is Music", and "Disco Soccer". John CameronJazzrock – KPM 1097 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the crowning achievements of British arranger John Cameron – and perfectly titled too – given that John got his start in jazz, but also worked with plenty of British rock acts too – a legacy that comes together perfectly in this ultra-groovy set! The tunes are among some of Cameron's funkiest – and often feature heavy electric elements in the rhythms, topped by bold passages on horns – keyboards criss-crossing with saxes, basslines rumbling next to trumpets – all with a funky style that's right up there with the best of the American crime, cop, or blacksploitation soundtracks of the time! Titles include "Chicago Sidewalk", "Brass Monkey", "The Prowler", "Underlying Expectancy", "Smokey Joe's Dilemma", "The Great Escape", and "49th Street Shakedown". LP, Vinyl record album

Voyageur, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 40.00
A hefty book on the short-lived New Barbarians – a rock and roll supergroup founded by guitarist Ron Wood – with members that include bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Joseph Modeliste of The Meters, saxophonist Bobby Keys, and the legendary Keith Richards! The book is filled with photos from the group's years of touring in 1979 and 1980 – mostly bold action shots on stage, paired with shorter bits of text that almost serve like diary entries on the music. Plus, the book features a bonus CD – with 10 previously unreleased tracks all taken from 1979 rehearsals and live shows! Book is both color and black and white – depending on the photos – and is 199 pages, hardcover. Book

Francis CoppietersPiano Viberations – Small Group Jazz Featuring Piano & Jazz With Rhythm – KPM 1166 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A straight jazz set from KPM, but a great one too – a record that's a great mix of piano and vibes, handled in an almost MPS-ish sort of way! There's a few funky numbers here, and some great rhythms too – very dynamic grooves that are heavy on modal influences, and which really sparkle like some of the best European studio jazz we know from the time. The tracks are all long and well-written too – played with plenty of solo space, and a nice break from the usual sound library mode! It's a shame that the players aren't listed, but given the grooves we can hardly complain – and titles include "The Open Highway", "Funky Chimes", "Cross Talk", "Waltz On The Off Beat", "Sales Talk", "Piano In Transit", "Samba De Negra", and "Blues In The Bassment". Gene DeitchCat On A Hot Thin Groove – 78rpm Artwork From Record Changer Magazine (softcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2013. New Copy ... $4.99 35.00
An amazing collection of 40s and 50s jazz drawings by Gene Deitch – the complete anthology of his work for legendary jazz magazine Record Changer! Gene was an amazing artist and cartoonist, whose work helped solidify the legacies of some of the most famous cartoon characters in the American pop culture canon – from Popeye, to Tom & Jerry and beyond – but we're especially in love with his jazz-centric Record Changer era! Gene adored jazz and his love for it really shows! Cat On A Hot Thin Groove includes all of his magazine covers, cartoon panels and other bits from Record Changer – versatile work that ranges from fun, cartoon-y panels of "Jazz Cat" characters, to more elaborate and abstract illustrations. Wonderful, vital stuff – and it's very nicely anthologized here by Fantagraphics! Coffee-table scale paperback – 160+ pages of prime Deitch jazzy drawings with text accompaniment. Book

Act (Germany), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 42.99
Piano, trumpet, and accordion – a really beautiful combination here in the hands of three masters of their instruments – trumpeter Paolo Fresu, accordionist Richard Galliano, and pianist Jan Lundgren! The set isn't the first this trio has recorded – and it definitely shows their deepening sympathies over time – with a special balance of space and sound, quiet and melody, of the sort that less comfortable musical partners wouldn't have been able to carry off this well! Most songs run for just a few minutes, but work together to make for a lovely poem in sound – created from original numbers by the members of the trio, and well-chosen gems by Michel Legrand, Quincy Jones, and others. Tracks include "Blues Sur Seine", "Love Land", "Pavese", "Prayer", "The Magic Stroll", "Love Theme From The Getaway", "Le Jardin Des Fees", "Del Soldato In Trincea", and "Human Requiem". KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99
Sweet KPM funk from the 70s – a set that features the legendary "Big City Suite" from David Gold, plus 20 other groovers from rare KPM sound library albums of the time! Gold's suite is really great – a hip mix of keyboards, wah wah guitar, and strings – all wrapped together warmly in a portrait of a city from a variety of angles, in a variety of moods. The work's almost an update of 50s city-symphony albums, but is put together here with a much hipper 70s soundtrack mode – lots of subtle elements that really keep things interesting! Other tracks offer up a mix of jazz, soundtrack, and sound library funk – hand-picked from KPM classics like Jazzrock, Synthesis, Sounds Of The Times, Trendsetters, and other legendary albums – really packed in here with a huge amount of cuts that are totally great! Titles include "Good Vibrations" and "Trial Of Strength" by Keith Mansfield, "Testing Time" by David Lindup, "Four O'Clock Earthquake" and "Smokey Joe's Dilemma" by John Cameron, "Watchful Eye" by James Clarke, "Sunshine Special" and "Get Ready Get Set Fly" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Open Roads" by Nick Ingman, "Go Getter" by John Cameron, "City Airscape" and "City Police" by David Gold, and "Lap Of Honour" by Clive Hicks.
