Ed BickertEd Bickert ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99
A sweet little set from Candian guitarist Ed Bickert – a record that's filled with amazing tones and colors, and which sparkles brightly from the very first note! The date's a trio outing – with Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums – but Bickert's playing gives the whole thing a quality that's very different than any sort of traditional jazz guitar set like this – thanks to a style that shows a knowledge of 70s innovators like Pat Martino and John Abercrombie, but a sense of soul that keeps the whole thing nice and solid – in a very classic way. The set's got an airy feel, but is deeply grounded too – and at times, Bickert almost seems to echo the unique phrasing of his Canadian contemporary Sonny Greenwich. Titles include "Where Are You", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "It Might As Well Be Spring", and "Manha De Carnaval". CD

Steve GrossmanSome Shapes To Come ... LP
PM, 1974. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Beautifully choppy jazz from Steve Grossman and his legendary 70s comrades Gene Perla and Don Alias – one of the heaviest hitting American combos of the time! The trio have a tight fusion sound that's as full-on as it is funky – and Grossman blows some amazing work on tenor and soprano sax that cut into the tunes with a really fierce bite – while Perla delivers these round, powerful basslines – and Don Alias alternates between free percussion and some driving funky drums! For this session, the group's joined by Jan Hammer on electric piano and moog, playing in a nicely restrained fashion that's not nearly as overblown as his later work, and which jams into the groove just perfectly – making for a sweet electric set that's a real standout of the 70s. The set includes the breakbeat track "Zulu Stomp", plus "Alodian Mode", "Haresah", and "Extemporaneous Combustion". LP, Vinyl record album

Pat LabarberaPass It On ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
A strong little set from the upstate scene that circled around PM Records in the mid 70s – one headed up by sax player Pat Labarbera, and which features Gene Perla on bass, Joe Labarbera on drums, and either Richie Beirach or Don Thompson on piano! Pat plays tenor, soprano, and flute – and at times, he's going for the harder-jamming PM sound – with those sharp edges in the rhythms you'd expect from Perla and Labarbera – but at others, he kicks back and blows with surprising soulfulness that brings some great lyrical moments to the set – this sense of soul that we really love. Titles include "Little Lady", "Cellar Muse", "Pass It On", "Up Loose", and "Princess Road". CD

David LiebmanSolo – Memories Dreams & Reflections ... CD
PM/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $16.99
David Liebman plays solo, but not in a way that's spare or lonely at all – as the record often features Dave overdubbing himself on a variety of instruments – including soprano sax, flute, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards! Liebman jokingly refers to the record in the notes as "playing with myself", but the approach is much better than that – and instead creates one of the most personal, poetic albums we've ever heard from the legendary reedman. Titles include "Hiroshima Memorial", "Guided Dream", "Words", "The Power Of The Cross", and "Translucence". CD

Kathryn MosesMusic In My Heart ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 1978/1979. Used ... $6.99
The second album from Kathryn Moses – a sweet mix of warm vocals, funky flute, and even a bit of sax! Kathyrn's as great a singer as she is an instrumentalist – and the album offers equal parts of her talents – stepping out with a style that's often a bit funky at the bottom, with an electric mixture of flute, guitars, percussion, and bass. Gene Perla produced the record, and it's got a fair bit of choppy grooves that are right up there in the best PM Records mode – more proof that the Canadian scene could groove nicely when it wanted. Titles include the jazz dancer "Lucky Duck", plus the cuts "Should Be Ancient History", "Katrina", "More Than Ever", "Music In My Heart", and "Love To See You Smile". CD

Open SkyOpen Sky ... LP
PM, 1973. Very Good ... $11.99
A lesser-known side of early work from the great Dave Liebman – a very hip trio that also features Frank Tusa on bass and Bob Moses on drums and kalimba! The sound is very open, very spacious, and surprisingly spiritual – more so than some of Liebman's other work, especially in later years – and it's clear that all three are definitely inspired by the freedoms of the post-Coltrane generation, and are seeking a way to stretch out and really deliver their own sort of message. Liebman sounds wonderful on wooden flute, soprano sax, tenor, clarinet, and standard flute – and titles include "Flute Piece", "Deep", "Questions", and "Devotion". LP, Vinyl record album

PM/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99
A powerful little trio – and one of the boldest setting that reedman Dave Liebman recorded in during the 70s! The Open Sky combo features Dave on a range of reeds – tenor, soprano, and alto flute – plus a bit of acoustic piano and percussion too – often working with these long lines that are very spiritual and progressive, but neither too jamming, nor too outside at all! Bassist Frank Tusa's got this warm, round tone that really deepens the record – and drummer Bob Moses is at his best in helping to bring just the right sort of spark to the music. The best tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Bugs Bunny", "Mfwala Myo Lala", "Striving For Truth", and "Amy". CD

One of the few records ever cut by the great keyboardist Bernie Senesky – a player who did some of his finest work ever for the ultra-hip PM Records label! This set's got Bernie on both acoustic and electric piano – and the artist handles the keys with this sensitivity that's really appreciated – an ability to move fast and really take flight, but never in a way that's too jamming, or show-offy at all – and still very much with the lyrical qualities that have always made him such a great surprise. The group's a quartet – with added percussion from Don Alias to complicate the rhythms nicely – alongside bass from David Piltch and drums from Terry Clarke. A great little record from Bernie Senesky – a Canadian pianist who doesn't always get the recognition he deserves on this side of the border, but who can always blow us away! Bernie's got a fantastic command of the piano – this bold, wide range at times – but also with more lyrically sensitive moments too – a balance of energy that always keeps things exciting, and which comes across with a sense of warmth that's really wonderful. The trio features the mighty Gene Perla on bass and Ben Riley on drums – really matching Bernie's groove – and titles include "Bill's Waltz", "Old Folks", "Invitation", "Come To Me", "Blues For EJ", "Bud Lines", and "Young & Foolish". PM/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
A rare European performance from the Stone Alliance trio – one that was recorded at the same time as their legendary run of albums for the PM label, but never issued at the time! The tracks are nice and long here, and the group really break out – still every bit as tight as on their well-remembered albums of hard funk and heavy jazz, but with some freer elements at times – especially from Steve Grossman's tenor on his long solos, and also from percussionist Don Alias on one long track that's just a 9 minute solo on congas! Other titles include a nice reading of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin", plus "Samba De Negro", "Sweetie Pie", "King Tut", and "Taurus People". CD

Stone AllianceStone Alliance ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 1975/1976. New Copy ... $16.99
An amazing little group – and one of the real standouts in indie jazz during the 70s! Stone Alliance are a killer power trio made up of players who'd previously worked for Elvin Jones – and all three of them have inherited a frenzied sense of rhythm from Jones – and that great sharp edge he brought to his initial early recordings in the post-Coltrane years! But there's also a deeper sound going on here, too – a bit of funk, and definitely a bit of Latin in the percussion and basslines – which makes for these grooves that are as complicated as they are infectious – often given some sweet spiritual tones from the reeds on top! The lineup features Steve Grossman on tenor and soprano sax, Gene Perla on bass, and Don Alias on drums and percussion – all working together with tremendous energy, but a great focus too – always soulful, and never too jamming at all. Titles include the insane break track "Sweetie Pie", plus Stevie Wonder's "Creepin", "Duet", "King Tut", "Samba De Negro" and "Vaya Mulatto". CD

The core energy is still super-sharp – that magical combination of the saxes of Steve Grossman, bass of Gene Perla, and drums of Don Alias – but the sound takes on whole new dimensions with added keyboards, percussion, and bandoneon – used in different ways throughout to create warmer, lyrical elements. A fantastic live performance from drummer Elvin Jones – done in 1971 as part of a John Coltrane Memorial Concert – and a record that maybe shows just how much Jones had grown as a leader in the few short years after Coltrane's death! The album features two long, very freewheeling tracks – "Shinjitu" and "Simone" – certainly inspired by the freedoms allowed by the Coltrane Quartet of the 60s, but taken in really dynamic directions that not only come from the drums of Elvin, but also the bold, rich work of Gene Perla on bass – as the pair really drive things from the bottom, really encouraging some great sounds from Chick Corea on piano, Frank Foster on tenor and soprano, and Joe Farrell on tenor and flute. The music has a nice mix of dynamic energy, of the sort you'd ear on other PM Records releases – and some mellower, more laidback moments that seem especially well-suited to Riley's talents on the keyboard. The rest of the group features Michael Stuart on tenor and soprano sax, Don Thompson on bass, and Claude Ranger on drums – and side two features the 19 minute "Dreams", a really beautiful tune – and side one features a version of "Chunga's Revenge", plus "In My Life", "Earth", and "Blue Dream". Greenwich has a style that's loose and sprightly – very uniquely his own, and shown here better than on any other record – a quality that has the single-note punch of Grant Green, but the airier vibe of Jim Hall at times – a surprising balance that comes off very well throughout. Stone Alliance move down to a duo here – the mighty team of Don Alias on drums and Gene Perla on bass – and the pair bring in a whole host of great guest stars to take the place of recently-departed reedman Steve Grossman! To us, the record would be more than great enough on its own with just the grooves of Perla and Alias – but the set really warms up from contributions by artists who include Michael Brecker on tenor, Dave Liebeman on reeds, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Alex Acuna on percussion, and Jan Hammer on keyboards – keeping things as tight and focused as on his best 70s funky fusion outings. Perla and Alias keep things tight and choppy in the rhythms – a nice undercurrent of funk on most tracks – and titles include "Pedra Da Lua", "Trampoline", "Aunt Remus", "Tribute To Afreeka", and "Uncle Jemima". Full-on sounds from the mighty Stone Alliance trio – a record that comes on strong right from the start, then doesn't let up for a minute! We love the studio albums from this group in the 70s, but they seem especially on fire on this live date from the late 70s – a firey fusion of the tenor of Steve Grossman, bass of Gene Perla, and drums and percussion of Don Alias! As much as Grossman sounds great in later years, he's got an extra special sort of quality here – one that really makes the album soar with his soulful, almost spiritual solos – which are often brought back nicely to earth from the funkier currents of the bass and drums. A group with a sound that you'll never be able to pronounce – but with a sound that's instantly accessible, and which goes right to the heart of the matter in a great mix of funky fusion and more rock-styled touches! The lineup is pretty straightforward – keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums – but these guys have a great way of really coming up with unusual grooves and unusual phrasings – moments that clearly have a knowledge of freer jazz, but never go that far out – and performances from musicians who clearly know the world of prog, but also keep things tighter and groovier too! In a way, the feel of the record isn't too far from the early 70s Placebo albums with Marc Moulin – but maybe less keyboard-centric than those sets, and with tight rhythmic elements that also echo some of the funky fusion of the PM Records label. Tracks include "Hoppel", "Hetero", "Bruch", "Zinky", and "Malaga". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian Bennett & Alan HawkshawFull Circle – Tranquil Funk For Laid Back Panoramic Journeys – KPM 2084 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), 2018. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
The title totally gets it right – as the album features sound library giants Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett coming completely full circle – emerging again to give us the same sort of grooves they recorded for KPM back in the 70s! The album's a new one, but it's got the complete sound of the 70s all the way through – fantastic production, sublime instrumentation, and just the right way of putting things together with that no-nonsense sound library approach! That means no vocals, never too much jamming, and loads of grooves that are catchy, but also pretty funky too – with larger horn arrangements handled by Hawkshaw, which glide over the rhythms and keyboards in a mighty nice way. Titles include "Serengeti", "Open Road", "On The Nile", "Marrakech", "Midnight Jazz", "Flying", and "Hole In One". LP, Vinyl record album

BuariDisco Soccer (2 x 45rpm pressing) ... LP
Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 32.99
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". KPM/Be With (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the crowning achievements of British arranger John Cameron – and perfectly titled too – given that John got his start in jazz, but also worked with plenty of British rock acts too – a legacy that comes together perfectly in this ultra-groovy set! The tunes are among some of Cameron's funkiest – and often feature heavy electric elements in the rhythms, topped by bold passages on horns – keyboards criss-crossing with saxes, basslines rumbling next to trumpets – all with a funky style that's right up there with the best of the American crime, cop, or blacksploitation soundtracks of the time! Titles include "Chicago Sidewalk", "Brass Monkey", "The Prowler", "Underlying Expectancy", "Smokey Joe's Dilemma", "The Great Escape", and "49th Street Shakedown". LP, Vinyl record album

A hefty book on the short-lived New Barbarians – a rock and roll supergroup founded by guitarist Ron Wood – with members that include bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Joseph Modeliste of The Meters, saxophonist Bobby Keys, and the legendary Keith Richards! The book is filled with photos from the group's years of touring in 1979 and 1980 – mostly bold action shots on stage, paired with shorter bits of text that almost serve like diary entries on the music. Plus, the book features a bonus CD – with 10 previously unreleased tracks all taken from 1979 rehearsals and live shows! Faber & Faber (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 36.00
An incredibly dense book on the psychedelic scene of the 60s – a huge volume that not only looks at an impressive array of music, but also the wider trippy culture, too – but all with a level of text that goes far beyond most of the thinner volumes on the period! Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Despite a very vivid cover, the book itself is all text, no images – a hefty 638 pages, hardcover, and a very deep read! Book

KPM/Be With (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A straight jazz set from KPM, but a great one too – a record that's a great mix of piano and vibes, handled in an almost MPS-ish sort of way! There's a few funky numbers here, and some great rhythms too – very dynamic grooves that are heavy on modal influences, and which really sparkle like some of the best European studio jazz we know from the time. The tracks are all long and well-written too – played with plenty of solo space, and a nice break from the usual sound library mode! It's a shame that the players aren't listed, but given the grooves we can hardly complain – and titles include "The Open Highway", "Funky Chimes", "Cross Talk", "Waltz On The Off Beat", "Sales Talk", "Piano In Transit", "Samba De Negra", and "Blues In The Bassment". Sonny Criss & Kenny DorhamBopmasters (Sonny Criss At The Crossroads/Kenny Dorham & The Jazz Prophets) ... LP
ABC, 1956/1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
An excellent set that brings together 2 rare albums from the 50s! Sonny Criss At The Crossroads is an obscure 1959 session recorded by Criss in Chicago, and it's one of the only jazz records ever on the Peacock label, which put out mostly gospel and blues. Criss is joined by Joe Scott on piano, and the Chicago rhythm section of Bob Cranshaw and Walter Perkins, both fresh from the MJT+3. Great tone, warm solos, and a nice vibe throughout. Tracks include "You Don't Know", "Butts Delight", "Softly", and "Sylvia". Kenny Dorham & The Jazz Prophets is a fantastic lost hard bop album, featuring Kenny Dorham leading a tight quintet that stars J.R. Monterose on Tenor. Monterose and Dorham are great, and really open up on the 5 tracks on the album – all of which are long enough to give the players plenty of room to blow. Probably one of the best jazz records ever recorded for ABC, and with the titles "The Prophet", "DX", "Tahitian Suite", and "Blues Elegante". LP, Vinyl record album

Piano, trumpet, and accordion – a really beautiful combination here in the hands of three masters of their instruments – trumpeter Paolo Fresu, accordionist Richard Galliano, and pianist Jan Lundgren! The set isn't the first this trio has recorded – and it definitely shows their deepening sympathies over time – with a special balance of space and sound, quiet and melody, of the sort that less comfortable musical partners wouldn't have been able to carry off this well! Most songs run for just a few minutes, but work together to make for a lovely poem in sound – created from original numbers by the members of the trio, and well-chosen gems by Michel Legrand, Quincy Jones, and others. Sweet KPM funk from the 70s – a set that features the legendary "Big City Suite" from David Gold, plus 20 other groovers from rare KPM sound library albums of the time! Gold's suite is really great – a hip mix of keyboards, wah wah guitar, and strings – all wrapped together warmly in a portrait of a city from a variety of angles, in a variety of moods. The work's almost an update of 50s city-symphony albums, but is put together here with a much hipper 70s soundtrack mode – lots of subtle elements that really keep things interesting! Other tracks offer up a mix of jazz, soundtrack, and sound library funk – hand-picked from KPM classics like Jazzrock, Synthesis, Sounds Of The Times, Trendsetters, and other legendary albums – really packed in here with a huge amount of cuts that are totally great! Titles include "Good Vibrations" and "Trial Of Strength" by Keith Mansfield, "Testing Time" by David Lindup, "Four O'Clock Earthquake" and "Smokey Joe's Dilemma" by John Cameron, "Watchful Eye" by James Clarke, "Sunshine Special" and "Get Ready Get Set Fly" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Open Roads" by Nick Ingman, "Go Getter" by John Cameron, "City Airscape" and "City Police" by David Gold, and "Lap Of Honour" by Clive Hicks. A really great split album of moods from the legendary KPM Sound Library – two different sides, each with a slightly different vibe! Side one is The Hunter – which features a mix of funky action tunes and moodier, tense moments – almost acting like a mini-narrative in sound, with contributions from Steve Gray, Brian Bennett, Clive Hicks, and Dave Richmond – on titles that include "Approach", "Hideout", "The Hunter", "Theme For A Hunter", "Flashing Knives", and "Flying Squad". Side two is Adventure Story – another narrative mix of modes, but with a different flavor, and an especially nice focus on keyboards and woodwinds – used in slinky styles that echo some of the Italian action modes of the period. There's contributions from all the four artists on side one, plus Duncan Lamont – and titles include "Speed Trap", "Knife Edge", "Battle", "Casing The Joint", "The Foil", and "The Investigator". A fantastic set from sound library keyboard genius Alan Hawkshaw – one that's got a very positive, upbeat mix of acoustic and electric elements – and some mighty nice keys from the man himself! Alan's got ears here that open up channels of sound through territory that includes catchy 70s TV themes, more funky action moments, and even some more subtle currents of jazz – especially on a few cuts that almost feel as if Hawkshaw is beating Bob James on CTI at his own game! Every track is pretty darn great – and there's no filler at all, especially if you like 70s electric keyboard soundtracks – on titles that include "Sky Train", "Destination Venus", "Current Affairs", "Strangelands", "Sheer Elegance", "Mystique Voyage", and "Cruising". Very short themes from these two giants of the Brit sound library scene – some of them funky, some of sweet, all of them pretty darn great! Many numbers have a very stark, spare approach – one drum pattern, a slightly more complicated bassline, then more creative work on keyboards or guitar – all used in these ways that echo with the grooviest qualities of late 60s British TV and broadcasting – which is no surprise, given that most of these tracks were geared towards those settings! Side one is collaborative work between Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield, and side two is all Mansfield on his own – with titles that include "Funky Chase", "Funky Link 1", "Teenage Suspense", "The Busy Scene", "The Passing Scene", "The Brisk Scene", "The Action Scene", "Scene Link 6", and "Funky Fanfare" – done with some mighty nice organ!
