Count BasiePop Goes The Basie ... LP
Reprise, 1964. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Count Basie goes pop, and the results are mighty nice – a hard-swinging take on familiar tunes from the 60s, but all re-tooled the jazzy Basie way! The vibe here is right up there with the best Neal Hefti moments with the group – and although the arrangements are by Billy Byers, they've got that sense of tightness that Hefti first help bring to the band – a great setting for the inventive solos, and all the cool little twists and turns that make a record like this so great. And while you might think of the setting, or the title, as some sort of sell-out on the Count's part – the album's instead a perfect way to hear what made the Basie band so great – how they could completely transform tunes like "Pretty Woman", "Bye Bye Love", "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy", "At Long Last Love", and "Go Away Little Girl". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie Quartet – At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1978 ... CD
Jazz Line (Germany), 1978. Used 2 CDs ... $16.99
The only thing better than small combo work from Dizzy Gillespie is live small combo work from Dizzy Gillespie – as the legendary trumpeter really takes off in a concert setting! This excellent German set from the late 70s is a great case in point – as the tracks are long and flowing, and really show the imaginative solo style that Dizzy can have when let loose in such a format – served up here at a level that's even groovier than some of his American live dates of the same time! The group gets nice and funky at times – with guitar from Rodney Jones as both a key rhythmic and melodic element, and bass from Benjamin brown, who seems to be playing electric – all given tight, sharp work on drums from Mickey Roker. Leo Wright joins the group on alto for four of the album's 13 tracks – and titles include "Unicorn", "Sunshine", "Brother K", "Blues", "Olinga", "The Land Of Milk & Honey", and the massively funky "Diddy Wa Diddy". Dizzy GillespieSesjun Radio Shows Vol 1 – Dutch Radio Session ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... $16.99
If you like Dizzy Gillespie as much as us, you'll know that he kept on getting better and better as the years went on – continuing to evolve as a musician, into territory that's always very different than what he was giving the world a few years before! That's definitely the case here, on two live performances done for Dutch Radio in the late 70s – both of which feature a guitar as the key partner – with Rodney Jones on the first half, Ed Cherry on the second, and bass from Benjamin Brown and drums from the great Mickey Roker. Tracks are long, and open up in this really wonderful way – and the group is joined by percussionist Sheyvonne Wright on the second half, who also sings a bit too. There's a quality here that's much more in the best 70s work on the Muse label than you might expect – and titles include "Barcelona", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Toccata", "The Truth", "Night In Tunisia", "Manha De Carnaval", and Round Midnight". Mance LipscombNavasota ... CD
Sunset Blvd, 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
Rare live work from the great Mance Lipscomb – most of it from that early 60s time when his music was being discovered by a larger audience from the first time ever! Mance was born in 1895 – but as the notes point out, he never got the chance to make records during the early 78rpm blues boom – and instead had to wait for the 60s to finally get discovered, recorded, and presented to the rest of the world outside his home territory near Navasota, Texas! CD1 features a live performance done for radio in Boston in 1972 – just Mance on vocals and guitar, recorded with a nice sense of warmth, and with a bit of vocalization with the audience as Lipscomb announces some of the tunes on the set. CD2 features material recorded in 1963 and 1964, much closer to home – done in Houston for Homecooking Records, and mixed here with one other obscure set of Houston performances. The 2CD set features 33 tracks in all – a great addition to the too-small catalog of recordings from Lipsomb's later life – with titles that include "Keep On Truckin", "Alabama Jubilee", "Texas Blues", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Rag In F", "Mama Don't Allow", "I Want To Do Something For You", "True Religion", and "One Thin Dime".
