✨✧ Otis RushScreaming & Crying (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Black & Blue/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning little record from the great Otis Rush – one recorded in Paris, but with the feel of a smoky backroom in some tiny club on the south side of Chicago! Rush is at his best here – perfect on both guitar and vocals, with a focus and rawness that even blows away some of his better-known records from the decades – alongside superb accompaniment from Jimmy Dawkins on guitar, Jerome Van Jones on organ, and Willie Mabon on piano! Sunnyland Slim plays guest piano on one track – and titles include "It's My Own Fault", "I Can't Quit You Baby", "A Beautiful Memory", "Looking Back", and "You Gonna Need Me". CD features two bonus tracks – "I Got News For You" and an alternate of "I Can't Quit You Baby". CD

✨✧ Otis RushCold Day In Hell ... CD
Delmark, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A loose, rollicking mid 70s studio record for Delmark by the great Otis Rush – with some longer numbers and a lively sound that's pretty damn sweet! There's a raw, invigorating sensibility here that recalls some of the best live sets we've seen Otis play over the years – a side of him that doesn't always come through in his studio work of the period! Otis is at his most passionate out front on vocal and guitar, backed by a pair of saxes, organ & piano, bass and drums. Bob Levis is also on guitar for half of the record, with Mighty Joe Young on the others. An overlooked gem for Otis Rush and the Delmark label! Includes "Cut You Loose", "You're Breaking My Heart", "Midnight Special", "Society Woman", "Mean Old Woman", "Cold Day In Hell", "All Your Love I Miss Loving/Jam" and "Motoring Along". CD

✨✧ Otis RushGroanin The Blues ... LP
Cobra/P-Vine (Japan), Late 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most hard-edged, gritty material ever cut by the legendary Otis Rush – work done on the Chicago scene of the 50s for Cobra Records – a company who were even more low-fi than Chess Records at the time! Otis' vocals are as incredible as his guitar – and the groups here are often nicely full – not large ensembles, but well-crafted combos that feature plenty of work from key contemporaries on the scene – including Walter Horton on harmonica, Lafayette Leake and Little Brother Montgomery on piano, Harold Ashby and Red Holloway on tenors, and Willie Dixon on bass. All these cuts were originally only issued as rare singles back in the day – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Groaning The Blues", "Violent Love", "Sit Down Baby", "I Can't Quit You Baby", "Checking On My Baby", "She's A Good Un", "Three Times A Fool", and "Love That Woman". A killer set – one that not only features vocals from Jimmy Dawkins on one half, and vocals from Big Voice Odom on the other – but which also includes some great guitar from the mighty Otis Rush! Rush is fantastic, twisting around Jimmy's own guitar, which is pretty darn great too – and the set also has some smoking Hammond from Jerome Van Jones – a player we don't know at all, but whose instrument really brings out some of the funkier currents in the guitars! Titles include "Mean Atlantic Ocean", "Life Is A Mean Mistreater", "No More Troubles", "Tell Me Woman", "Sweet Laura", "Come To Me", "Marcelle Jacques Et Luc", and "It Serves You Right To Suffer". CD features two bonus alternate takes! CD

Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from this legendary Detroit festival – a mighty assemblage of roots and jazz performers that was put together by John Sinclair! Most of the material here is blues – but the set features a key track from Sun Ra & His Solar Myth Arkestra – a performance of "Live Is Splendid" from the Space Is The Place Suite. ✨✧ VariousAnn Arbor Blues Festival 1969 ... CD
Third Man, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic document of the first-ever Ann Arbor Blues Festival – the start of a great event that would blossom into other styles of music in the 70s, but which stood as a strong blues-based event in its initial year of 1969! In some ways, the three day series of concerts is a roots answer to Woodstock – which took place just a few weeks before – as the festival featured a great scope of blues talents, from the rootsier sort of artists who were recording for labels like Folkways or Arhoolie, to some of the sharper modern talents rising to the top on Chess or Delmark! The package alone is almost worth the price of admission – beautiful photographs of the event, detailed notes, and the first-ever release of this music – which has sat in the vaults for decades, finally to see the light of day. Titles include "Dirty Mother For You" by Roosevelt Sykes, "So Glad You're Mine" by Arthur Big Boy Crudup, "Everybody Must Suffer/Stone Crazy" by Luther Allison & The Blue Nebulae, "Help Me" by Junior Wells, "I Wonder Why" by Jimmy Dawkins, "Too Much Alcohol" by JB Hutto & His Hawks, "So Many Roads So Many Trains" by Otis Rush, "Long Distance Call" by Muddy Waters, "Off The Wall" by James Cotton Band, "Juanita" by Big Joe Williams, "Jelly Jelly Blues" by Shirley Griffin, "I Feel So Good" by Magic Sam, "Call It Stormy Monday" by T-Bone Walker, "Death Letter Blues" by Son House, "Key To The Highway" by Sam Lay, and "Mojo Hand" by Lightnin Hopkins. A set that's equal parts blues and R&B, and with some nice occasional jazzy moments too – all served up in a package that's overflowing with gems from back in the day! This isn't really the kind of upbeat material that you'd think from the "dance party" in the title – as the dancing here is more slow-stepping and mellow – laidback cuts that have a great late nite vibe, and which really work well together, thanks to an excellent track selection throughout! Titles include "You Know My Love" by Otis Rush, "The Thrill Is Gone" by Roy Hawkins, "Bear Mash Blues" by Erskine Hawkins, "My Kind Of Woman" by Emitt Slay, "Tell A Whale Of A Tale" by Wynonie Harris, "Hardhead" by Louis Jordan, "Still Blue Water" by Myrna Taylor, "I'm Hurted" by Mamie Perry, and "Money Blues" by Camille Howard. ✨✧ VariousOtis Rene Story ... CD
Excelsior/Spin/VSOP, 1940s/Early 50s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing collection of music – put together ostensibly as a tribute to Excelsior label owner Otis Rene – but also a wonderful document of the wealth of wonderful sounds on the LA scene of the 40s and early 50s! The set is especially notable in that it includes rare early recordings by artists who'd flourish later on bigger labels like Capitol, Liberty, and Atlantic – yet heard here at the start of their careers, and already sounding wonderful – coming up with those unique hybrids of musical modes that made LA sounds some of the most compelling of the time – jump blues, smooth vocal R&B, and more – often pointing the way towards musical growth to come in the 60s. Despite the label's small status, its productions were all top-shelf – very polished, and well put-together – as you'll hear on this batch of 44 tracks that includes the titles "Pitchin Up A Boogie" and "All For You" by Nat King Cole, "Synthetic Joe" and "Groovin High" by Gerald Wilson, "Thursday Blues" and "I've Got To Have You That's All" by Jimmy Rushing, "Jeff Hi Stomp" and "Volcano" by Johnny Otis, "John The Revelator" by Luvenia Nash Singers, "Mobile" by Otis Rene, "I'm Still Crazy" and "Ribbely Bop" by The Drifters, "Strange Land Blues" by The Hollywood Flames, "Huckle Boogie" by Preston Love, "Crazy Baby" and "Think It Over" by Phil Flowers, "You Better Change Your Way" by Charles Brown, and "At Least You Could Save Me A Dream" by Herb Jeffries.
