✨✧ Other MirrorOther Mirror ... LP
King Underground, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Other Mirror have a sound that's nice and lean – just keyboards from Jonny Cuba, and guitar, bass, and drums from James Tilley – served up in these rhythms that are funky, but in these really fresh ways – not retro-funk, but retooled for the 21st Century, yet without any overdone production or mixology! Singer Amelie Chevalier joins the duo on a number of tracks – warming things up next to the darkness of a few of the instrumentals – and titles include "Mystery Of Mars", "Journeys", "More Alive", "Saturn's Child", "Aguirre", "Cat Scratch", and "Psychic Horizon". Tetsuji HayashiBack Mirror ... LP
Kitty (Japan), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $49.99
A really lovely album from 70s Japan – a set that's maybe a bit more understated than some of the more commercial material from the scene, but a record that's still got a wonderfully well put-together vibe! The record begins with a mellow instrumental, then opens up to vocal tracks from Tetsuji Hayashi – sung in this laidback style that really fits the blend of midtempo rhythms and keyboards that are used throughout the set – sometimes touched with larger arrangements, or augmented with backup vocals – often just served up in a lean style that really keeps things personal! As with some of the best Japanese work of the time, there's a nice current of soul that runs through the music – and titles include "Rainy Saturday & Coffee Break", "Marci 1", and a number of other tracks with titles in Japanese. LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie MarianoMirror ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A seminal electric session from Charlie Mariano – one recorded after his shift from bop-based work into trippier, more psychedelic influences – and one of his few American dates from the time! The record has Charlie working on soprano and alto sax, with a group that includes Pat Rebillot on electric piano and organ, Tony Levine on bass, and David Spinozza on guitar – all grooving along with the reeds in a stretched-out, tripped-out kind of way – a mixture of jazz and some Eastern influences, but always held together nicely – without some of the overindulgence of some other Mariano records from the period. Charlie's solos are still icy as ever, but much freer than on his classic work, and with definite post-Coltrane influences – and titles include "Madras", "Himalaya", "Vasi Bindu", and "Mirror", which has vocals by Asha Puthli! One of the best albums ever by this legendary Chicago trio – a great example of the way that records on the Nessa label can really get to the heart of artists' intentions! The trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on percussion have never sounded better – and have this intimate, soulful interplay that's sometimes missing from other efforts – that special kind of energy that makes the AACM so great when it's really clicking this well – as deeply spiritual as it is freely expressive! Threadgill plays alto, tenor, bass flute, and the compelling hubkaphone – and titles include "I'll Be Right Here Waiting", "No 2", "GvE", "Subtraction", and "Keep Right On Playing Thru The Mirror Over The Water". Scott McKenzieStained Glass Morning ... LP
Ode, 1969. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Scott McKenzie's come a long way here past the pop folk of his early years – and is stepping into more mature territory that has a fair bit of country music bubbling up in the mix! The tunes here are all originals by Scott, produced by David Anderle with a style that's sophisticated, yet never slick or overdone – almost in the mode of some of Gram Parsons or other contemporary country rockers before their music had fallen into cliche. Many tunes are spacious and a bit gentle – in a way that shows McKenzie's folksy roots, but also hint at the maturity to come in 70s country – and titles include "Crazy Man", "1969", "Look In The Mirror", "Going Home Again", "Dear Sister", "Take A Moment", and "Illusion". Nicole Mitchell & Lisa E HarrisEarthseed ... LP
FPE, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $25.99 28.99
Very powerful work from the great Nicole Mitchell – the third of her albums to be based on the work of Octavia Butler, and the first to be done in collaboration with vocalist Lisa E Harris! The music was commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago, and recorded in a large open space in that august institution – which gives the spare moments this wonderfully echoey sound, and the fuller passages a real sense of spontaneous urgency! As with most of Mitchell's music, there's a powerful message within – one that's showcased even more by the vocal contributions by Harris – and in addition to flute, Mitchell also adds in some electronics – as does Harris, plus theremin as well. Other musicians include Zara Zaharieva on violin, Ben Lamar Gay on trumpet and electronics, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Avreeayl Ra on percussion. Titles include "Ownness", "Moving Mirror", "Whole Black Collision", "Elemental Crux", "Fluids Of Time", "Purify Me With The Power To Self Transform", and "Biotic Seeds". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Todd RundgrenSomething/Anything? ... LP
Bearsville, 1972. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Arguably one of the greatest pop albums of all time – a pure act of genius from Todd Rundgren, and one of the few cases in rock music where two records are actually better than one! The double-length set was Rundgren's third solo effort after the breakup of Nazz – but it's a broad step ahead from the first two, and a strong move into the kind of near-perfect, yet always-human pop that made Rundgren so great in the 70s. Sides one through three of the album were completely done by Todd himself – all instruments, voices, and production handled through the then-new magic of the 16 track studio – and Rundgren's really at his best here, working in the kind of personal modes that make his tunes so great, some of the best of the mainstream singer/songwriter generation. Side four has fuller arrangements and other players coming into the mix, but the core feel of the rest of the record is very nicely preserved – apart from a few tunes that perhaps get a bit too goofy. It's hard to imagine more great pop songs in one album – and the set's overflowing with genius moments that include "Marlene", "I Saw The Light", "I Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference", "It Takes Two To Tango", "Sweeter Memories", "I Went To The Mirror", "One More Day", "Song Of The Viking", and "Hello It's Me". Duophonic, Late 90s/Early 2000s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
Fantastic sounds from Stereolab – an assortment of rare singles and other unusual recordings that were mostly issued on their own Duophonic label, and which are far more obscure than their bigger label albums during the same period! Even though Stereolab gave the world some undeniable classics in the late 90s and early 00s, they were also working endlessly, and seemed to record more than they could ever fit on a full length set – which resulted in all the cool singles, limited releases, and other material included here – not dusty tapes pulled from the archives, but beautiful work that often returns the group to all the space age charms of their first few records! The package is huge – 25 tracks in all, of varying length – and titles include "Barok Plastik", "Calimero", "Fried Monkey Eggs (voc)", "Solar Throw Away", "Variation One", "Monkey Jelly", "Explosante Fixe", "Jump Drive Shut Out", "The Super-It", "L'Exotisme Interieur", "Pandora's Box Of Worms", "Retrograde Mirror Form", "Nomus E Phusis", "I Feel The Air Of Another Planet", "Outer Bongolia", and "Intervals". Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
A wide-ranging set, and one that really gets at the influence of the music of Lou Reed over the years – as the collection brings together songs penned by Reed from back in the day, but which continue to get new handling by a variety of artists in more recent decades! As some folks know, Lou first started out as a songwriter – knocking out tunes for no-name groups issued on budget labels – and although the music of the Velvet Underground and Reed's solo work could sometimes get way-out, at the core there were always all these really great songs – the kinds of tunes that are featured here, on interpretations from a really great array of different groups and singers! As with other titles in this series from Ace, the notes are great – lots of history and other details too – to accompany a set list of 20 titles that include "What Goes On" by Bryan Ferry, "Pale Blue Eyes" by Alejandro Escovedo, "Run Run Run" by Echo & The Bunnymen, "I'm Waiting For The Man" by Beck, "We Are The People" by Iggy Pop, "Rock & Roll" by Detroit, "Sunday Morning" by Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs, "I'll Be Your Mirror" by The Primitives, "New Age" by Rachel Sweet, "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" by Nico, "Perfect Day" by Kirsty MacColl & Evan Dando, "Vicious" by Lloyd Cole, "Train Round The Bend" by The Soft Boys, "Femme Fatale" by Tracey Thorn, "I'm Set Free" by Yo La Tengo, "Walk On The Wild Side" by The Dynamics, and "All Tomorrow's Parties" by June Tabor & Oyster Band. ✨✧ Chick Corea & Gary BurtonIn Concert, Zurich – October 28 1979 ... LP
ECM, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best ECM teams of the 70s – working here together in a wonderful live set! Chick Corea's got this wonderful flow on his piano – almost a quality that's more like the most unbridled Keith Jarrett work for ECM – bursting out with light and color at each new turn, but in a way that makes it feel like Chick's just discovering each sound as it comes to his fingertips! This quality really seems to bring out a freshness in Burton's vibes, too – an ebullience that's even stronger than usual – and not as concerned with deeper-down sounds as some of his other ECM recordings. The whole thing's great – with lots of original tunes by Chick – and titles include "Song To Gayle", "Mirror Mirror", "Crystal Silence", "Bud Powell", and "Senor Mouse". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rick Laird with Joe HendersonSoft Focus (Muse) ... LP
Timeless/Muse, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album led by guitarist Rick Laird, but a set that's probably equally noteworthy for the presence of tenorist Joe Henderson on a few tracks – who really shines here in an overlooked late 70s session! The core group is great enough – as Laird has these round, classic jazz guitar tones that slide in with soulful beauty next to the piano and Fender Rhodes of Tom Grant – and when Henderson's not around, Grant's solos are especially great – and really have this lyrical power that grabs us right away, and almost makes us forget the presence of Joe! But then Henderson comes back with that subtle edge of his – similar to his playing on the Mirror Mirror record – a raspy tone that really deepens the whole proceedings. Henderson produced the record, and plays on the tracks "Outer Serge" and "Tranquility" – and other titles include "Now You Know", "Thorn In A White Robe", "Soft Focus", and "I Love You". Charles LloydMirror ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2010. Used ... $11.99
Beautiful work from Charles Lloyd – a set of compelling originals mixed with standards, both old and new, performed in a laidback style that really makes the most of his wonderful tone! Lloyd was a player who was great from the start – but in recent years, he seems to have even deepened his sound more strongly – finding notes on the saxophone that few others could match, in ways that are similar to the levels that Archie Shepp hit during his maturing years. The cooled-off setting of the album works perfectly to highlight this great side of Lloyd's talents – and backing is subtle, and handled by the trio of Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. Titles include "Caroline No", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Monk's Mood", "Mirror", "Ruby My Dear", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "Desolation Song", and "Tagi". CD

✨✧ John Cale & Terry RileyChurch of Anthrax ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of those landmark meetings of mighty talents that sounds even better on record than it does on paper – as the set somehow finds this really special space that's completely between all the best early 70s modes of both Terry Riley and John Cale! Cale was really coming into his own at the time as a solo act – creating amazing records after leaving the Velvet Underground, but also still tied to the deeper art scene from which he emerged. Riley was on the way to becoming one of the most popular of the more modern composers – thanks to a nod from The Who, and a big audience for his wonderfully trippy records on Columbia. The label allowed the pair to create this really special music here – sounds that borrow from Riley's minimalism, while also having some of the darkness of Cale's own compositions – and coming across with this jagged, almost modal sort of approach that's really great. Cale only sings on one song, and the rest of the set is instrumental – as Riley plays piano, organ, and soprano sax – and Cale joins in on bass, guitar, viola, and harpsichord. The two of them groove together in these totally cool tracks that build and build, with minimal lines repeating over and over in endlessly fascinating groove – in a way that touches on a weirdly funky mode! The cut "Ides Of March" has the potential to be dancefloor groover in the jazz dance scene, and there's lots of other great tracks like "Church of Anthrax", "The Protege", and "The Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles". Philips/We Are Busy Bodies (UK), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 32.99 On November 12, 2021
A wonderful album of early analogue electronics – originally issued with a title that billed it as "an astronaut's reflections while visiting the earth"! The sound here is way more outside than that, though – almost more as if the astronaut was an alien – with weird, spooky sounds that are mindblowing, and years ahead of their time – a great example of the kind of forward-thinking music Dissevelt was making back in the 60s. Some tracks have stark bleeps and pings, others are more low-end and atmospheric, and together the whole thing feels much more like some serious electronic experiment than any sort of kiddie space age set! Titles include "Woomerangs", "Ignition", "Spearhead", "Zanzi", "Anchor Chains", "Re-Entry", "Mexican Mirror", and "Pacific Dawn". LP, Vinyl record album

Don EllisHaiku (US pressing) ... LP
MPS, 1974. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of the coolest albums ever cut by trumpeter Don Ellis – quite different from any of his American sessions of the time, and done with a really stretched-out, ambitious sort of feel! The record matches Ellis bold trumpet work with some hip arrangements that feature multiple guitars, keyboards from Milcho Leviev, a bit of harp, and some added strings to round out the sound nicely – a complex approach that gives the record some of the sophistication of the hipper Creed Taylor productions of the early 70s. The strings really bring in some arch-sounding notes at points, then slide into warmer passages at others – and Leviev's keyboards have a rich tone next to the sharper notes of Don's trumpet on some of the best cuts. The whole thing's about as poetic as you'd guess from the title, and from songs like "Dew", "Summer Rain", "Forest", "Cherry Petals", "Water Jewel", "Blossoming", "Mirror Pond Of Stars", and "Parting". Knitting Factory, 1979/1980. Used Gatefold ... $11.99
Two beautiful albums from one of the most difficult periods of Fela's life. "Coffin For Head Of State (Part 1 & 2)" is a mournful dirge-like track (although not without a good deal of funk), written around the death of Fela's mother from an attack on his Kalakatua Republic. "Unknown Soldier (Part 1 & 2)" tells of that attack, and has a similar mournful quality, mirroring the sadness and trauma of the event. Both tracks are fantastic, and represent a maturity and emotionality that make this time one of the best musical moments of Fela's career! CD

David Grubbs/Mats Gustafsson/Rob MazurekUnderflow ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.00
A fantastic meeting of the musical minds – coming together here in a set of live improvisations recorded at a record store in Greece! The setting's an unusual one, and the music is too – sounds that really move past the usual for all three players, but especially David Grubbs and Mats Gustafsson – both of whom seem very comfortable here in some of the sonic territory that we normally hear more from Rob Mazurek! Grubbs' guitar is quite different than on some of his own records – especially the solo acoustic moments – and Mats reminds us that he's not just a hell of a saxophonist, but also a master of many other ways to disturb the flow of air – delivering work here on flute, fluteophone, and live electronics – the last of which is matched with more electronics from Rob Mazurek, who also plays piccolo trumpet and wood flute too. Every song has a different shape and texture, which is a further testament to both the sensitivities of the musicians, and their sympathies with each other – and titles include "Not In A Hall Of Mirrors", "Creep Mission", "City Stones Sleep", and "Goats & Hollers". The reed talents of Marcus Strickland hit the sound of the new Blue Note – with wonderful results! Ndegeocello plays bass on some tracks – with those dark tones we really love in her jazz work – but the key musical partner here seems to be trumpeter Keyon Harrold, who brings that flow to the music that we love on his own Blue Note album too. One of the boldest statements on record from trombonist Jeb Bishop – and a really great reminder of his key contributions to the Chicago avant scene at the start of the century! Jeb's a master of subtle shape and sound on his instrument, but he can also play with a fiercer frenzy – which is definitely the case here, and he moves between a trio and quartet lineup – alongside Kent Kessler on bass, Tim Mulvenna on drums, and Jeff Parker on guitar! The match of Parker and Bishop happens on four of the album's seven tracks, and has an especially strong resonance – tuneful at times, fuzzier at others – although the trio tracks are pretty darn incredible, and have us really remembering the greatness of Kessler and Mulvenna too. ✨✧ Bobby HutchersonKicker (previously unreleased material) ... CD
Blue Note, 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest lost sessions ever! Legendary vibist Bobby Hutcherson recorded this set of tracks in his early days with Blue Note – but the set's never come out until now, and its release is cause for rejoicing! The material shows Hutcherson playing in a straight-ahead format, tinged with some of the modernist new thing elements of other recordings from the time, but mostly filled with a soulfulness not always heard on his Blue Note albums at the time. The group includes Duke Pearson on piano, whose lovely lyrical approach works perfectly with Hutcherson's vibes. Joe Henderson plays some great hard-edged tenor, cutting nicely through all the tracks – and Grant Green sits in on half of the material, playing some nice spiralling modal lines on guitar. Many of these titles have been recorded in other versions on later Blue Note albums – but they're all in fantastic versions here, including "Bedouin", "The Kicker", "Step Lightly", and "Mirrors". CD

✨✧ Keith Jarrett with Charlie Haden & Jan GarbarekArbour Zena ... LP
ECM, 1976. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful large-concept album from Keith Jarrett – one that features his piano, the bass of Charlie Haden, and the tenor and soprano sax of Jan Garbarek as the main solo instruments over larger string orchestrations! There's a sense of excitement to the record right from the start – well, not excitement that you'd get in other jazz-based styles – but kind of a sense of hope, drama, and unfolding that really shades the record nicely – and gives it a different flavor from some of Jarrett's other larger form projects of the time – possibly creating the first really unified, extended musical vision he brought to a record like this in the 70s. Beautiful sounds throughout – with titles that include "Runes", "Solara March", and "Mirrors". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear, unglued seams and light staining.)

✨✧ Townes Van ZandtRear View Mirror (with download) ... LP
Fat Possum/TVZ, 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Townes revisiting his own time-honored tunes from the late 60s onward, often backed by just a second guitar or fiddle, spare settings that maximize the stark power of his songwriting and voice! The voice is really the key here, distinctive in both the songwriting – with some of the most effective story songs about lost souls and wayward love in the modern folk or country canon – and in performance, here sounding as clear and soulful as ever, and in much stronger form than we remembered! Beautiful stuff. Includes "Pancho & Lefty", "If I Needed You", "For The Sake Of The Song", "Our Mother The Mountain", "Dollar Bill Blues", "No Place To Fall", "Lungs", "White Freightliner Blues", "Don't You Take It Too Bad", "Tower Song", "Waitin' Round To Die", "Colorado Girl" and more. ✨✧ VariousMotown Disco – Selected By Muro & T-Groove ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the funkier side of Motown in the 70s – and a collection that's not just straight disco, thanks to the mighty selection talents of DJ Muro and T-Groove! Muro handles all of CD1 – and mixes in some excellent soundtrack numbers with more familiar soul tracks – and also presents a few classic cuts in remixed versions too! T-Groove is on CD2 – which has cuts that are maybe a bit more iconic in the Motown club sound of the 70s, but still pretty darn great when heard together in this set. Neither CD appears to be mixed – tracks all appear discrete and standalone – and the package features 37 titles that include "You Made Your Bed" by Reuben Howell, "Books & Basketball" by David Shire & James Di Pasquale, "T Plays It Cool (unedited version)" by Marvin Gaye, "Erucu" by Jermaine Jackson, "Mirrors Of My Mind" by Jackson 5, "Date With The Rain (DJ Spinna refreak)" by Eddie Kendricks, "Ego" by Ozone, "Big Time (M+M big time 2016 mix)" by Rick James, "Treat Her Like A Lady" by The Temptations, "Brothers Gonna Work It Out (Joey Negro return of the mac mix)" by Willie Hutch, "He's A Friend" by Eddie Kendricks, "Down To Love Town" by The Originals, "Go For It" by Billy Preston & Syreeta, "Full Speed Ahead" by Tata Vega, "Let's Be Young Tonight" by Jermaine Jackson, "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by Bonnie Pointer, "Shoulda Gone Dancin" by High Energy, "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" by Thelma Houston, "Star Love" by Three Ounces Of Love, "Tailgate" by 21st Creation, "Scratchin" by Magic Disco Machine, "Standing On The Verge" by Platinum Hook, and "I Need Your Lovin (M+M lovin all night long mix)" by Teena Marie.
