Titles include "Sunrise", "The Bells", "Touch", "Down To Love Town", "Everybody's Got To Do Something", "It's So Real", "We Can Make It Baby", and "Baby, I'm For Real". LP, Vinyl record album

Motown, 1976. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $3.99
A split Motown single, featuring an artist on each side, and tracks that are definitely designed to cash in on the dancefloor cash! The Originals step out in a full disco mode with "Downtown To Love Town" – a swirling number that's filled with lots of strings, and which boogies on out here in a special extended disco mix! Jermaine's "Let's Be Young" is mighty nice too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has half split top & bottom seams. Name in pen on cover & labels.)

✨✧ OriginalsDown To Love Town (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best-remembered albums from the mighty Originals – thanks to a surprisingly strong step into club and disco rhythms! The group were always great on the harmony tip – and earlier music often had them really shining on the ballads – but here they work with arrangers Frank Wilson, Dale Warren, and Art Wright on a set of grooves that rival the best group soul club work coming out of Philly and New York at the time! The vocals are never overwhelmed by the grooves – and instead seem to really be set loose with the lively arrangements – finding a soaring space they might never have hit this well before. Titles include the clubby classic "Down To Love Town" – plus "You Are A Blessing", "Call On Your Six Million Dollar Man", "Hurry Up & Wait", "Been Decided", and "Sunrise". CD also features a bonus alternate version of "Down To Love Town"! CD

SOUL, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Great group vocals by one of Motown's biggest groups to never really make it. This album has some of their best cuts, with a sweet harmony sound, and raw production that works quite well with the band's approach. The best example of this is the cut "We Can Make It Baby", but other nice cuts include "Once I Have You", "If You Gonna Leave", and "The Only Time You Love Me Is When You're Losing Me". ✨✧ OriginalsCalifornia Sunset ... LP
Motown, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums by The Originals – and one of their most coherent albums on Motown! The record was produced by Lamont Dozier, who also wrote all the songs on the album for the group – and it's kind of a mix of Dozier's strident 70s update of the 60s Motown groove (which he'd been using in his own work), with some of the smoother stylings that The Originals would use on later albums. Titles include "Why'd You Lie", "Don't Turn The Lights Off", "Let Me Live In Your Life", "Fifty Years", and "California Sunset". LP, Vinyl record album

SOUL, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Sweet modern soul from the Originals – one of Motown's few groups from older years to really adopt a successful 70s sound. Much of the arrangements are by producers Frank Wilson and Michael Sutton – and the album's got a smooth LA soul sound that's different than the group's earlier records, which were much more in a classic Detroit group mode. The ballad cuts seem to work the best for the group – and titles include "Touch", "Natural Loving Feeling", "Count Me Out", "It's So Real", "All I Wanna Do", and "Bring Me Together". Jamey AebersoldFor You To Play Vol 11 – Herbie Hancock – 8 Classic Jazz/Rock Originals ... LP
JA Records, 1978. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the many excellent albums that appeared on the jazz instruction record label of Jamey Aebersold – this one a set of trio tracks based around the work of Herbie Hancock. The set actually features a trio that has Kenny Barron doing Herbie's job on the piano, with bass by Ron Carter and drums by Billy Higgins – and in that respect, it stands almost as a Kenny Barron Tribute To Herbie album. Because of the nature of the session, Kenny's a bit more restrained and obvious in his playing – but that also gives the tunes a nice clunky groove, getting down to the real elements of the tracks. Titles include "Maiden Voyage", "Watermelon Man", "Dolphin Dance", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Toys". LP, Vinyl record album

Essential New Orleans piano from Professor Longhair – an artist who was neither a professor, nor a man with much hair! The chrome-domed pianist had a huge influence on the sound of New Orleans R&B and soul to come – as he played in a triplet-heavy way that was rooted in blues, but provided a key link to the rhythms that would dominate Crescent City music in following decades. This album features original Atlantic sides cut in New Orleans in 1949 and 1953 – about as classic as you can get for Longhair, with tunes that include "Tipitina", "Hey Now Baby", "In The Night", "Ball The Wall", "Who's Been Fooling You", "She Walks Right In", and "Willie Mae". VariousWhispers – Lounge Originals ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
One of the coolest collections we've seen from the Numero Group in a long time – an assortment of obscure lounge singers and groups who played the Midwest scene in the glory days of the cocktail bar – not exotica acts or jazz combos, but instead the kind of warm and mellow artists you might find working in the dim corner of some shag-laden lounge! These are artists who were clearly brought up in a world of rock first, jazz and other styles second – maybe with a homegrown AOR vibe, but a lot more stripped-down and personal too. The package is very cool – designed like a matchbook cover from one of the clubs, complete with a poster of other matchbooks inside – and artists include The Do's & Don'ts, Jan Tober & Ron Satterfield, Richard Powell, Terri Schmidt, Tom Dae, Nick Gillette, Mike Munoz, James, Mood Mystics, Cleveland Jones, and Blue Eyed Soul. Maybe the most powerful album we've ever heard from Sault – and a record that's unlike anything else they've given us before! The set has Sault rising into the righteous heavens – almost like the way that certain artists were elevated by the power of the Cadet/Concept late 60s years in Chicago – as the record blends choral voices and soaring strings with a subtle current of soul – all with echoes of Minnie Riperton and Rotary Connection, but an even more spiritual quality overall! And don't let the words "choral" or "strings" make you think this isn't a soul record – because if anything, it's maybe more soulful than the group's previous records – fitting nicely into a legacy that would include Donald Byrd's "Cristo Rendentor", Billy Harper's "Capra Black", and some of the vocal experiments of Max Roach. Titles include "Time Is Precious", "Luos Higher", "June 55", "Reality", "Air", "Heart", and "Solar". CD

Fantastic music from Sault – a record that explodes way past some of their previous releases, and really shows the group evolving in their sound – even if they are still keeping their cover art in the same very understated territory! There's a sense of urgency as the album begins – one that wasn't there a few records before, and which may well illustrate the increasing importance of Sault's mission at a cultural and political level – as they work with a blend of funky soul elements and much more cosmic-tinged execution – sometimes very slow and brooding, other times bursting with life to deliver their message! Sault have always been fantastic, but it also seems that with each new release, they get even more powerful and progressive – opening up a more radical agenda that really comes through in their music! The group don't state their position with the title of the record – which is essentially untitled – but their message comes through loud and clear in the way the righteous lyrics mix perfectly with their spare, stark instrumentation – a range of rhythms that often make it hard to tie Sault to any one category or scene, but which also makes the record bristle with excitement – on titles that include "Don't Shoot Guns Down", "Wildfires", "Sorry Ain't Enough", "Black Is", "Stop Dem", "Hard Life", "Hold Me", "Only Synth In Church", "Why We Cry When We Die", and "Bow", which features a guest appearance from Michael Kiwanuka. ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Good ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group with brother Nat on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums – and a young Bobby Timmons on piano, really cooking things up with tremendous drive, energy, and a sense of the groove! Titles include a great workout on Timmons' classic "This Here", plus originals "You Got It" and Spontaneous Combustion", and a great version of "Hi Fly". Soul jazz at its best, by one of the groups who gave the genre its name in the first place! LP, Vinyl record album

David AkeGreen Thumb ... CD
Posi tone, 2023. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Pianist David Ake works here at a level that maybe lives up to the slightly rural image on the cover – still jazz, but with a quality that's almost pastoral at times – as he allows the tunes to open up and build slowly, almost as sonic landscapes – but with a sense of warmth and tone that's very different than use of the word "landscape" might imply from a label like ECM! There's almost an Americanist vision here that echoes some of the quiet experiments of Bill Frisell – but with Ake's piano in the lead, beautifully balanced next to the tenor of Tony Malaby, who's at his warmest in the setting – in a quartet that also features Boris Kozlov on bass and Rudy Royston on drums and percussion. All titles are originals by Ake – and tunes include "Walker Evans", "Stu's News", "John Prine", "Green Thumb", "Street Food", and "Kendee". CD

Heartcore, 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Guitarist Cecil Alexander has a nice light touch here – not loose, but with a freely chromatic sort of vibe that really has his strings opening up with a heck of a lot of colors and brightness – set up next to the Hammond B3 of Will Gorman and drums of Steven Crammer! With that quality, the record's a bit different than most other organ/guitar trio sessions – in that the guitar is definitely first, and really setting the tune – never too overwhelmed by the Hammond, but nicely inspired by its actions to take flight, especially on some of Alexander's original tunes. Titles include a great reading of the Bobby Hutcherson classic "Till Then" – plus originals "Captain Bailey", "Bright Green", "Shug", "9th Round", "Talk Shop", and "Nansen". CD

Paul AnkaRock Swings ... CD
Verve, 2005. Used ... $2.99
Call us crazy, but this is one of our favorite albums in years! We'll be honest, and say that we've never been big fans of Paul Anka – but take it from us, the Anka on this album's a lot different than the one you may know from the past! Anka's completely reinventing himself here – working in a jazz-based mode with larger arrangements, and serving up a batch of tunes that must be heard to be believed. The tracks are mostly all from 80s pop hits – the kinds of songs that got played to death on the radio 20 years go, so much so that you'd think you'd never want to hear them again. Yet for the record, Anka's completely recasting them in fresh new versions – taking tunes like "Jump", "Eye Of The Tiger", "True", and "It's My Life" – and doing them in jazzy, upbeat styles that completely transform not only the songs, but also Anka's entire career as well. And if you're worried about the album being a gimmick, don't – because there's no sense of irony here, no easy "joke" to the tracks – and instead an honest, personal approach to the lyrics – one that makes us realize new depth in these tunes, often far more than we'd ever have credited the originals. Take it from us, this is pure genius – a leap over all the Starbucks-driven jazz-revival singers who are crooning Dylan and Hendrix for the new generation – and a brilliant recasting of David Lee Roth, Bon Jovi, and Spandau Ballet for the 21st century. The territory's all Anka's own – and we'll be glad to bet we'll be hearing a lot more from him in years to come! Titles include "Hello", "Eyes Without A Face", "Lovecats", "It's A Sin", "Blackhole Sun", "Wonderwall", and even "Smells Like Teen Spirit". CD

Strawberry (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
A pair of records from UK vocal group Arrival – plus rare BBC material too! First up is the record Arrival from 1970 – a really wonderful record from this very cool UK group – a mix of gals and guys who harmonize together in a really great way – very different than a lineup like this might have sounded in the 60s, spun with a touch of the Hair generation, and almost like a blue-eyed version of The Fifth Dimension, working with a great blend of rock, pop, and soul! The tunes are sometimes familiar numbers, but redone in some really great ways – and mixed with some originals by the group's Frank Collins, set to arrangements by Nick Harrison and Paul Buckmaster. Titles include "Live", "Light My Fire", "Sit Down & Float", "Take Me", "Don't Turn His Love Away", "See The Lord", "Prove It", and "Hard Road". Next is the second album, also titled Arrival – released two years later, and really showing a different sort of vibe for the group – more righteous and overflowing with new material – like a shift between the musical styles of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar – more guitars and more solo vocal moments too! Titles include "Not Gonna Worry", "Glory Be", "Part Of My Dream", "Have A Drink On Your Father", "Weary Sad Weary Down", and "So It Is Written". CD3 features BBC sessions from 1969 and 1970 – 11 more tracks in all – and the set also features 10 more bonus tracks that are all non-LP singles! CD

Red's got this sharp attack and inherently rhythmic sound that would have been right at home on early 60s Prestige Records – alongside piano gems from artists like Bobby Timmons or John Wright – yet the groove also isn't just copping American styles of the time, as they've got an unusual inflection to their rhythms – maybe some blocker styles that carve things out with a unique spirit, especially given the spacious echo used in the recording. Titles include the long originals "Fata Morgana Altamira" and "Santander" – plus "Fish This Week", "The Uptown", "Sister Sadie", and "Vacushna". CD

Dave Bailey2 Feet In The Gutter ... LP
Epic, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
Hardbop albums don't get any better than this – and although drummer Dave Bailey only recorded for a brief stretch as a leader, this session's one that shows that he was a heck of a force to contend with! The record's got an intensity that easily rivals the best by Art Blakey over at Blue Note during the early 60s – but Dave's also got a slightly looser groove too – a bit more sense of humanity, and one that allows for really organic interplay between the players. There's a slight soul jazz undercurrent – especially in the piano lines of Billy Gardner – and other players in the quintet include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, and Ben Tucker on bass. The group wails on an early version of Tucker's classic "Comin' Home Baby", plus other great originals like "Coffee Walk", "Lady Iris B", and "Two Feet In the Gutter". A old favorite on the south side of Chicago! LP, Vinyl record album

A key album from a fantastic point in the career of trumpeter Chet Baker – his later years, a time when most of the world was ignoring Baker's talents, but Chet was still in a hugely creative mode, and turning out some of his freshest sounds in decades! There's a wonderful quality to the whole record – and vibist David Friedman is a key part of the sound, as he really matches the air inclinations of Chet, as the pair are backed by Buster Williams on bass and Joe Chambers on drums and percussion – a fantastic duo who only make things sound even better. 4 of the album's 6 tracks are Friedman originals – including "For Now", "Shadows", "Syzygies", and "Lament For Thelonious". Roulette (Japan), 1957. Used ... $14.99
One of THE seminal Basie albums of all time – and a masterful pairing between the Count and arranger Neal Hefti! Hefti has an amazing ear for the Basie groove, and he works here to re-fit the overall sound of the group with a tighter, more fluid approach – one that ensured that they'd be alive and booming well into the 60s. The Hefti touch is one that's slightly lighter than the Basie of before – one that assumes the bump at the bottom, but never overdoes it – and instead almost uses the sound of no sound at all to carry the rhythm – while the horns at the top of the group are vamping around in these majestic charts that break out into fantastically searing solos. Basie's on piano, natch – and other players include Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Henry Coker, Al Grey, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Vampi Soul (Spain), 2009. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Recent genius from the true king of Latin Soul – the mighty Joe Bataan, sounding every bit as great now as he did back in the day! Bataan gets some very hip backing from Los Fulanos – a Barcelona-based combo who help recreate the tight sound of Joe's early grooves from the late 60s, with just a touch of the funk he picked up in the 70s too – a really great blend that helps Bataan breath fresh new life into a range of classics from years back. The set list includes some of our favorite Latin Soul gems from Joe, and both the rhythms and production styles are completely faithful to the originals – but also aren't just simple copycat versions either. After so many years in obscurity, it's great to see Bataan back in action so strongly – cooking it hard and heavy on cuts that include "Latin Soul Square Dance", "Gypsy Woman", "Mestizo", "The Bottle", "Johnny's No Good", "Special Girl", "Subway Joe", "Puerto Rico Me Llama", and "Rap O Clap O 2008". Really wonderful work from one of our favorite groups on late 60s Warner Brothers – the mighty Beau Brummels, a group who were already years ahead of their time, and who also evolved strongly during the short span of time covered on this album! As you'd guess from the title, the collection features all sorts of great tracks that never appeared on the group's classic albums for Warner – spanning the psychedelic folk of their early years on the label, to the rich country-inspired sounds of their last – and also including a few solo tunes from singer Sal Valentino too! These aren't just throwaway cuts or covers, as many of them are originals – mostly penned by the great Ron Elliott – titles that include "I'm A Sleeper", "Cherokee Girl", "Long Walking Down To Misery", "Lift Me", "Lower Level", "Two Days Til Tomorrow", "She Reigns", and "Fine With Me". One of the most evocative albums we've ever heard from pianist Ran Blake – a set that's got all the sharp edges of some of his most adventurous solo work, but one that also has Ran working in a few different settings, often with a very poetic feel! The set's not a hokey retro-crime record – as you might fear from the title (and countless later jazz albums that evoke that aesthetic) – and although Blake's working through melodies from older films, plus a few original numbers in the same spirit, his presentation is completely unique – and explosively personal throughout! His own piano is tremendous – blocks of sound and runs of notes that are extremely imaginative, and which flow forward from the same dark spirit we love on Blake's other recordings. And they're often balanced with shifting contributions from other musicians – players who include John Heiss on flute, Paul Meyers on bass, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Daryl Lowrey on alto and soprano sax – all of whom make some great additions to the set. Titles include a nice take on "The Pawnbroker" – plus other film titles that include "Eve", "Touch Of Evil", "Le Boucher", "Pinky", and "Doktor Mabuse" – as well as Blake originals "Spiral Staircase" and "Garden Of Delight". Maybe one of the most famous records ever from master drummer Art Blakey – in part because of the cover, which has come to stand for the Blue Note aesthetic of the 60s! But despite that famous image, the music is more than worthy of attention – as the group features that unusual sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers that made some amazing sounds in the mid 60s – Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass! Morgan and Shorter are really growing and pushing themselves in different ways than their work with Blakey at the start of the 60s – and the addition of Fuller, and especially Walton, really gives the group this rounded warmth that shows a new level of maturity – a quality that comes through both in the playing, and the writing – as songs are all originals by Walton, Fuller, Morgan, and Shorter. The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". Very groovy bossa tracks – very much in the mode of some of the Verve hit recordings of the mid 60s! After the success of the Astrud Gilberto/Joao Gilberto work with Stan Getz, it's clear that Philips and Luiz Bonfa wanted to get in on the act – and they've paired Bonfa's guitar with vocals from his wife Maria Toledo – a really wonderful singer with very Astrud-like appeal! The album's got some larger backings from Bobby Scott, who brings in a nice undercurrent of jazz – and while some of Bonfa's other work of the time is somewhat spare and dreamy, the style is nicely full here. Hatology (Switzerland), 1993. Used 2 CDs ... $34.99
Not necessarily the bebop fest that you might expect from the title, but a wonderful extrapolation of earlier jazz ideas shaped by the musical vision of Athony Braxton! The tunes here are all originals by Charlie Parker – plus a few more by Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis – all older bop standards that are used as vehicles for freer expression by a group that includes Braxton on reeds, Ari Brown on tenor and soprano saxes, Paul Smoker on trumpet, Misha Mengelberg on piano, Joe Fonda on bass, and either Han Bennink or Pheeroan AkLaff on drums. Some of the numbers are taken in a relatively classic bebop mode, but others move into territory that's much freer and more concerned with sound and texture – as you might hear in some of Braxton's own compositions. The mix of modes is really wonderful – swinging between poles of jazz in a way that reminds us of some of Braxton's best 70s recordings. Saxophonist Peter Brotzmann is no stranger to the world of solo recording – but this set has a very different vibe than most of his previous outings in that format – as you might guess by the famous standard referenced in the title! Half the record has Peter taking off on his own renditions of classic jazz ballads – still very much in Brotzmann formation, with lots of sharp edges and freer flights – but tied to a longer jazz history that's really amazing, a bit in the manner of some of the Anthony Braxton experiments with standards over the years. Other tunes are originals or works by some of the Brotzmann's contemporaries – balanced in a great way that really shows the never-ending creativity of the legendary reedman, even after his many decades of recording. Titles include "Con Alma", "Lady Sings The Blues", "I Surrender Dear", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Churchsong", "Brozziman", and "Sumphin". LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown/Stro ElliotBlack & Loud – James Brown Reimagined By Stro Elliot ... LP
Republic, Late 60s/Early 70s/2022. New Copy ... $25.99 27.99
The funky genius of James Brown, given a whole new spin for the 21st Century by Stro Elliot of The Roots! Stro clearly loves James' music, and never tries to dominate it too much – as his mixes here are mostly faithful to the funky structure of the originals, and almost work more in an "edit" mode to expand on some of the best elements at the core – while also then throwing in some additional rhythms and other elements. The record's a great antidote to some of the overly-done remixes of classic funk, soul, and jazz – as you'll hear on cuts that include "The Goodest Foot", "Dragon Pants", "Coal Sweat", "Get Up Off", "Sortabad", "Turn It Up Give It Shrooms", "Black & Loud", "Machine No Make Sex", and "She Made Me Popcorn". Impulse/MCA, 1966. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An unbelievable recording! As Archie Shepp made his first album for Impulse a tribute to Coltrane, Marion Brown made his a tribute to Shepp – a wonderful lineage of avant talent in the 60s, stated boldly here, given Brown's amazing talent on the record! The album's filled with hard, soulful playing that goes out, but never too far – like Shepp in his best sixties moments – and Brown's working with a great lineup of players that includes Grachan Moncur on trombone, Beaver Harris on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano! The tunes include three Marion Brown originals on side one, plus three tracks by Shepp on side two. "Spooks" alone will leave you loving this album for years to come – and other tracks include "West India", "Delicado", "New Blue", and "Fortunato". A brilliant blend of 60s "new thing" playing and 70s underground jazz! CD

Paula/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99 23.99 About March 23, 2023
A wonderful electric groover from keyboardist Odell Brown – a player who's maybe best known for his Hammond organ work for Chess Records in the 60s, with his organizers group – stepping out here in a really different 70s record that's overflowing with great lines on electric piano! There's a nicely open sense to the rhythms – as the set is funky, but not straight funk – maybe similar in creative spirit to the Redd Holt records that were coming out on the same label at the time – but with a laidback and soulful vibe that's wonderful, and which also points the way towards contributions that Brown would make in the world of soul to come. The set is nearly all originals, but begins with a stunning 11 minute jazzy soul take on Stevie Wonder's "I Love Every Little Thing About You" – then rolls into gems that include "South of 63rd", "Simizzoke", "Song Theme", and "Tasha". The Lester in the title here is Lester Koenig, the legendary owner of Contemporary Records – for whom Ray Brown made this rare session as a leader shortly before his death! Ray had recorded often for Koenig in the 50s – probably most famously in the Poll Winners trio – but this session is a very different record indeed, and makes tremendous use of the piano of Cedar Walton and drums of Elvin Jones – in a way that's got the flowing, fluid, soulful energy of Walton's own best trio recordings of the 70s! Titles include the Walton originals "Ojos De Rojo" and "Something In Common", the Brown number "Slippery", and versions of "Sister Sadie", "Love Walked In", and "Little Girl Blue". CD

Ubiquity, 2014. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On April 22, 2023
A funky riff on some of the mightiest slabs in the Black Sabbath oeuvre – done up masterfully by Adrian Quesada and the Brownout collective! Where the Sabbath originals are all lumbering menace and sludgy rhythms, Brownout brings in Latin funk percussion, tripped out keyboard textures and some really great horn arrangements. They move raw slabs like "Iron Man" into surprising, instrumental percussion realms we'd never imagine them, and it's pretty amazing! "The Wizard" and "NIB" feature vocals by Alex Marrero, "Hand Of Doom" features Alex Maas", and "Planet Caravan" has vocals by David Jimenez – and other tracks include "Iron Man", "Black Sabbath" and "Into The Void". Dave Brubeck takes on the Eurasian scene – with wonderfully groovy results! The album's one of Brubeck's first in the "impressions" series, and it's a really colorful assortment of tunes – tracks with some lyrical and exotic moments that come through strongly, and which really offer a slightly different take on the Brubeck groove. Paul Desmond's alto sax is key to the sound here, and so is the progressive percussion of Joe Morello – and in addition to Brubeck's piano, the quartet also features bass from Joe Benjamin. Titles are all originals by Dave, and they include "Calcutta Blues", "Marble Arch", "Brandenburg Gate", "Nomad", and "The Golden Horn". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare material from the sessions for one of the greatest jazz albums ever – the legendary 1959 Time Out album by the Dave Brubeck quartet – expanded here with unreleased outtakes from the recording date, which include two tracks that were not even on the original record! The sound of the group is legendary – the crisp alto of Paul Desmond next to the ever-shifting, always-rhythmic piano of Brubeck – the man who brought modern jazz to the masses – aided with the fantastic bass of Eugene Wright and razor-sharp drum work of Joe Morello – every bit as great here as on the album that was released! The first five tracks are pretty close to the originals, with slight variations – a testament to the well-rehearsed nature of the group – but the added tunes really show the record in formation, as does the extra banter between the band that's included at the end. New titles include "Watusi Jam" and "I'm In A Dancing Mood" – alongside alternate takes of "Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Take Five", "Cathy's Waltz", "Three To Get Ready", and "Strange Meadowlark". CD

Peabo BrysonReaching For The Sky/Crosswinds (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977/1978. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
Peabo Bryson's early efforts for Capitol – Reaching For The Sky and Crosswinds in a 2CD set! Reaching For The Sky is a sublime blend of modern soul that's light years ahead of any of his later work. Part of the credit goes to Richard Evans – who's worked out these wonderfully smooth stepping arrangements that are a perfect accompaniment for Peabo's deep voice, but which also avoid any of the syrupy indulgence of later records. And sure, Peabo's still got that expressive tone – but he's keeping it mean and lean to let the music keep on going strongly. Titles include "Reaching For The Sky", "Hold On To The World", "Love From Your Heart", "Love Walked Out On Me", "You Haven't Learned About Love", and "Feel The Fire". Crosswinds is sweet, smooth, and soulful work from Peabo – a perfect little record that captures him at a point when he was definitely tightening up his act, but not falling into the soppier traps of later years! Production here is shared by Peabo with the great Johnny Pate – who seems to have a great ear for Bryson's maturing style – managing to couch the vocals in some of the more sophisticated modes formulated on the Chicago scene in previous years, but also with a bit of the west coast modern twist that Capitol was really bringing to the table in the soul business at the time! All tunes are originals by Peabo, and titles include "Crosswinds", "Smile", "She's A Woman", "Love Is Watching You", and "Don't Touch Me". The set includes 3 bonus tracks: "Reaching For The Sky (Edit)", "I'm So Into You" and "Crosswinds (Single Version)". CD

An amazing record – one that stands as one of Chico Buarque's greatest from the 70s! The set was recorded in Italy in 1970 – and features Chico singing lead vocals over backings handled by Ennio Morricone – all in a style that's a perfect blend of MPB with the best elements of the Italian scene of the time! The songs are all originals written by Chico – and have a light and dreamy samba/bossa feel, one that's inflected by the off-beat orchestral style of Morricone, and supported by vocals from I Cantori Moderni. The feel is halfway between Chico's work on RGE and some of the dreamier Morricone soundtracks of the time – and it's a wonderful thing to have a strong male lead vocal over backings from Morricone – a really rare thing for the time, with results that are tremendous. Titles are a mix of traditional numbers and Burnside originals – and we'd easily argue that this set blues away most of the later work that RL recorded as a darling of the indie rock world. The album's one of a few that feature Byrd working with baritonist Pepper Adams – a frequent partner on his best recording dates of the late 50s, of which this set is one of the best. The rest of the group includes a rhythm section of Walter Davis, Sam Jones, and Art Taylor – all grooving nice and hard – plus tenor work by the great Charlie Rouse, whose raspy tone really gives the set a tremendous amount of depth. Bet Car, Early 80s. Near Mint- ... $2.99 6.99
The genius of Betty Carter knows no bounds – and this album's a perfect illustration of that fact! The record is one of the few that Betty released on her own label – working in near obscurity at a time when she really wanted to break from the BS of the bigger companies, and the staid approach they were using towards vocal jazz. This set is one of Betty's most freewheeling – performed with trio lineups that include players like Onaje Alan Gumbs, Buster Williams, and Louis Hayes – really stretching things out past the simple "piano trio meets standards with singer" that you might hear on other records. The best illustration of the style is the amazing track "Sounds" – a 7 minute workout that has the trio and Betty cutting loose, taking jazz vocals a million miles past Ella or Billie or any other singer. Most other tracks are originals – and beautiful ones too – and titles include "What Is It", "I Can't Help It", "We Tried", "Happy", and "Tight". LP, Vinyl record album

Betty sings standards and originals with a warmth an imagination that we can hardly describe accurately – bringing emotion into the songs that we'd hardly heard in earlier recordings, and using a trio in ways that we'd never heard before with a vocalist. Eugene ChadbourneLost Eddie Chatterbox Sessions ... CD
No Prestige/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Magnificent early work from Eugene Chadbourne – a set that was recorded on Christmas Day, 1977 – and only issued a decade later on cassette – but sounds that are every bit as mindblowing as the material on Chadbourne's first few albums! The music here is heavy on compositions from Thelonious Monk – and the set also features Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman tunes too – all reworked by Chadbourne with this incredible acoustic guitar style – very freewheeling, but still tied to the roots of jazz through a sense of melody – in ways that are maybe even more illustrative of his role in the scene than some of his other work. At one level, there's an acoustic guitar craft here that stretches back to the early blues recordings, but through a strong sense of avant freedom – ala Captain Beefheart – but Eugene's care with the tunes, mixed with his expressive phrasing, also put him in a space that's somewhere between the world of Derek Bailey and Fred Frith, and that of jazzman Barney Kessel, whose name he's holding in the poster on the cover. Titles include "5th Of Beethoven", "Reflections", "Off Minor", "San Francisco", "Hackensack", "Dewey Square", "Central Park West", "Brilliant Corners", and "Light Blue". Also includes a number of Chadbourne originals – and unissued tracks as well! CD

Cameo/Ace (UK), 1961. Used ... $8.99
Two Chubby Checker groovers – back to back on a single CD! It's Pony Time is a romper that shows Chubby Checker at his best – a groove that's possibly less familiar than his twisting hit, spun out over a whole range of hip early 60s dance modes! There's a surprising amount of early Philly Soul in the set at times, thanks to arrangements from Dave Appell – and titles include "The Hully Gully", "The Watusi", "Pony Time", "We Like Birdland", "Hi Ho Silver", "The Shimmy", and "Dance The Mess Around". Let's Twist Again has a title that seems to take off from Chubby Checker's bit trademark hit, but the overall groove is a lot better than you might expect – set for twisting, sure, but in a nicely rough and ready style that's almost equal parts soul and R&B! Some tunes are familiar, but twist-ified – and others are standout originals that really make the album sparkle. Titles include "The Ray Charles-ton", "Dance A Long", "Takes Two To Tango", "Continental Walk", "The Jet", "I Could Have Danced All Night", and "Peanut Butter". CD

This album's nicely different than some of Coffey's previous for the Sussex label, as it's got a few cuts that are quite long jams – both in the seven minute range, and with a groove that trips out at times, maybe a bit like Shuggie Otis was doing during the same generation – but with all these really wonderful charts that have odd elements, and almost come across with an unusual soundtrack/sound library vibe! A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – but which still has some of the depth of soul that John Coltrane brought to his more experimental work on Impulse Records! The album's a classic introduction to the music of Trane – and maybe is tied more closely to the spirit of some of his work on Atlantic Records, and makes a nice bridge between the two bodies of work – as the Great One takes on older jazz tunes, but really transforms them, thanks in part to the sublime work of Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano. If you've never heard Connelly sing, you'll be blown away – and the setting of the whole project really seems to have him at his best – in a selection of two dozen songs that include "Ripcord Ripcord", "The Last Mile", "Union Square West", "Eulogy To Lenny Bruce", "I Cannot Care For You", "The Falconer", "The Black Rooms Of Richeleiu", "Reims 12/74", "A Slow Jones In New York", "Running Pure", and "Andy Incidentally". Tino ContrerasLa Noche De Los Dias ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A brilliant late statement from Tino Contreras – the legendary Mexican drummer who's been part of the jazz scene in Mexico City for decades – and who can still give the world wonderfully vibrant music like this! There's a deeply spiritual vibe to the record – a sound that's like some of Tino's most far-reaching work of the late 70s – and the group here features added percussion alongside piano, organ, saxes, and guitar – both acoustic and electric, which creates a great bridge in the sense of sound – as the music swirls together with a sense of majesty that almost recalls the best Latin America projects of Gato Barbieri on Impulse Records. All tunes are originals by Contreras, delivered with a fantastic spirit by the group – and titles include "Mascaras Blues", "Nina Yahel", "El Sacrificio", "Al Amanecer", and "Malinche". Chick CoreaInner Space (Tones For Joans Bones plus bonus tracks) ... LP
Atlantic, Late 60s/1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
An expanded version of Chick Corea's amazing Tones For Joan's Bones album from the late 60s – presented here with some key bonus tracks as well! The core album is amazing stuff – quite different than Chick Corea's 70s work, and a set that's filled with heavy soul jazz and Latin influences! Chick's coming off of years of work in Latin bands, and in smaller soul jazz combos, and his writing here is a mix of the freer style that would later become too free, with the rootsier elements of his background. The players on the record include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, Steve Swallow on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – and all tracks are long, with a sweeping, searching, soulful sound. Titles include a beautiful rendition of Chick's "Litha", which he also recorded with Stan Getz on Sweet Rain, plus two other nice originals – "Tones For Joan's Bones" and "Straight Up And Down". This set also includes two numbers left off the original release, "Inner Space" and "Guijira" – recorded at the same time, and a wonderful expansion of the already-great set. Added to the record are two more Chick-centered tracks from the Hubert Laws album Laws' Cause – "Windows" and "Trio For Flute, Bassoon & Piano" – arranged by Corea, and featuring him on piano and Hubert Laws on flute.
