✨✧ Sam DeesTake One – Origin Of Twelve 70s Soul Masterpieces (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sam Dees was one of the greatest unsung talents in 70s soul music – an important writer, arranger, and general background talent who helped so many other singers hit the heights – but who hardly ever issued much work under his own name! Apart from key singles and an important album on Atlantic, the recorded legacy of Dees isn't what it should be – given his impact on music, especially deep soul – but fortunately, sets like this have come along to correct that lack! As part of Sam's creative process, he would often record songs first on his own – not as rough demo tracks, but as surprisingly well done studio versions to illustrate the material – tracks that were often better than later versions of his tunes, and most of the other commercial soul on the market. This sweet set brings together 12 of those tracks – private recordings from Sam, of songs he'd later give to singers like Loletta Holloway, Ben E King, and others – an essential record from the great Dees, pressed up on super-heavy vinyl! Titles include the previously unissued "Married But Not To Each Other" – plus "Good Guys Don't Always Win", "Who Are You Gonna Love", "Con Me", "Only Lonely People", "False Alarms", "Standing In The Wings Of A Heartache", "The World Don't Owe You Nothing", and "Black Tattler". Anthony Branker & AscentBlessings ... CD
Origin, 2009. Used ... $6.99
A nice set of modern jazz spun from a diverse tapestry of influences with a variety of moods – composed and arranged by Anthony Bracker and played masterfully by his group Ascent! A glance at the tracklist will let you now that the compositions were born from a spiritual vibe, but it's really has a more linear feel than the kind of astral jazz atmosphere you might expect. This is by no means a bad thing, with a solid groove and lots of dexterous solos, with lots of vibes in the mix and piano in the sound, courtesy Bryan Carrot & Jonny King, congas by Renato Thoms bringing an organic feel, and smoothed out a bit with sax by Steve Wilson & Ralph Bowen. Titles include "Ascent", "The Holy Innocent", "Crystal Angel", "Sacred Soul", "Blessings", "Arise", "Wisdom", "Never Alone" and "Praise". CD

Bobby BroomBobby Broom Plays For Monk ... CD
Origin, 2009. Used ... $5.99
Beautiful takes on Monkish tunes – a record that's a bit warmer than the usual tribute to Thelonious, thanks to the round sound and deep soul of guitarist Bobby Broom! The group here is just a trio, and Bobby really gets plenty done in the small space of the set – romping around the Monk compositions in ways that really open them up – almost like he's using his instrument like a piano on one number, a sax on the next, and so on. As with most of Broom's best work, there's a chromatic warmth to the record that really holds things together – and, once again, makes us wonder why the hell this guy isn't hailed as one of the greatest living guitarists in mainstream jazz. Titles include "Reflections", "Lulu's Back In Town", "Ask Me Now", "Evidence", "Ruby My Dear", "In Walked Bud", and "Bemsha Swing". CD

Les DeMerleLes DeMerle Sound 67 – Once In A Lifetime ... LP
Origin/P-Vine (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
Rare lost work from funky drummer Les DeMerle – a set of tracks that were recorded for Atlantic Records in 1967, two years before DeMerle's classic Spectrum album – yet which finally appear here for the first time ever! Les is rock-solid, right from the start – definitely one of those younger players really helping to shift the sound of the larger jazz group at the end of the 60s – with fresh arrangements that bring in plenty of currents from soul, and a tight approach to the groove that makes the best of the excellent lineup! The set features work from some younger names who would break big later – including Randy Brecker on trumpet, Terry Plumeri on bass, and Lanny Morgan on alto and flute – as well as a touch of vocals from future rocker Genya Ravan. Titles include "Sticks", "Raunchy Rita", "Feelin Good", "Come Back To Me", "On A Clear Day", "That's Life", and "Signifyin". LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty great little set from trumpeter Thomas Marriott and his crew – working dexterously between sharp, and fairly energetic kind of post bop numbers, as well as some more laid back and measured material that nicely keep in the some rough edges – solid all the way! The set features a couple of fine originals, takes on classics by Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter, a Rodgers & Hart standard and a couple of sly, surprising covers – with the players given plenty of space shine. The band includes Marriott on trumpet & fluegelhorn, Mark Taylor on sax, Bill Anschell on piano & Rhodes, Jeff Johnson on bass, Matt Jorgensen on drums, and vibes by Joe Locke on a couple tunes. Titles include "Take It To The Ozone", "Masqualero", "Spring Is Here", "Little Francis", "Detours Ahead", "Brothers & Sisters", "You Only Live Twice", "Circadian Rhythms" and "Almost Blue"/ CD

Marlene RosenbergMLK Convergence ... CD
Origin, 2019. Used ... $6.99
Bassist Marlene Rosenberg leads a hell of a trio here – one that features Kenny Barron on piano and Lewis Nash on drums – both tremendous players who sound even better in the round, rich company of Rosenberg's bass! Most titles are trio numbers, but driven as much by the bass as by the always-wonderful work of Barron – and the tunes include many originals by Marlene – instrumentals, but with a current of the more righteous energy promised by the title. One exception is the great "Not The Song I Wanna Sing" – a number that has Rosenberg on vocals while Christian McBride handles the bass – alongside other vocal contributions from Thomas Burrell and Robert Irving III – which help make the song the most political number on the set. Titles include "The Line Between", "American Violet", "Togetherness", "And Still we Rise", "Visions", "The Barron", "Rain", "Love's In Need Of Love Today", and "Not The Song I Wanna Sing". CD

Excellent work from pianist Hal Galper – and proof that he was one of the most electric keyboardists of his generation, even when working acoustically – as on this record! The only real electric element here is the presence of guitarist John Scofield in the quartet – but Galper seems to match his spirit in the way he approaches the keys of his acoustic piano – using them spaciously and flowingly, almost as if he were working working in a CTI-type setting! The rest of the group features Wayne Dockery on bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums – and titles include "Yellow Days", "Ivory Forest", "Continuity", "My Dog Spot", and "Rapunzel's Luncheonette". CD

Origin, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hal Galper sounds as great as ever on this recent live set – as bold, strong, and powerful on the keys now as he did back in the 70s – getting some especially great support from Reggie Workman on bass and Rashied Ali on drums! Both players give the record a bit of an edge – a sound that's slightly more open and exploratory than some of Galper's straighter work, in a way that shakes out some of his warmer tones, and brings in more angular lines on the piano – notes that aren't exactly free, but freewheeling in their energy, especially on the more familiar tunes. Titles include "Take The Coltrane", "Soul Bod", "Blue In Green", "Soliloquy", "When Autumn Leaves Us", and "Constellation". CD

✨✧ Geof BradfieldMelba ... CD
Origin, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful tribute to the genius of trombonist/arranger Melba Liston – and a set that doesn't just copy her music, but really opens up a whole new spirit from its inspiration! Reedman Geof Bradfield composed all the tracks in the set, and puts things together with a spirit that's not unlike some of Melba's best arrangements for middle-sized groups – that way she had of making things tight, and rhythmically soulful – yet still allowing plenty of room for improvisation and individuality amidst the fuller picture of the tunes. Bradfield gets in plenty of great moments on tenor, soprano sax, and bass clarinet – and the rest of the group features Victor Garcia on trumpet and flugelhorn, Joel Adams on trombone, Jeff Parker on guitar, Ryan Cohan on piano, Clark Sommers on bass, and George Fludas on drums. Titles include "Central Avenue", "Dizzy Gillespie", "Detroit/Kingston", "Randy Weston", and "Homecoming" – and the set ends with vocals by Maggie Burrell on the tune "Let Me Not Lose My Dream". CD

A heck of a great batch of blue eyed soul tracks – much harder-hitting than you'd expect from the name of the group, and done with a "live studio" feel that really makes the session kick! The group's a big one, of mixed origin – of the sort of party club type acts that used to play a lot in the south in the 60s – and alongside original tunes, they also really groove on some upbeat numbers in a soaring Sam & Dave sort of mode. Titles include "I've Been Trying", "I'm Losing You", "Hey You", "Such A Fuss About Sunday", "Soul Man", "Shake", and "I Feel Good". LP, Vinyl record album

Perry ComoLightly Latin/In Italy/Look To Your Heart/Seattle ... CD
BGO/RCA (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $7.99 19.99
Four late 60s gems from Perry Como – all records that really have him pushing beyond his pop style of the 50s! First up is Lightly Latin – one of the most sublime albums we've ever heard from Perry Como – a set that definitely takes its Latin lightly, and instead really goes for the best sort of mellow side of the Como sound! There's definitely a few bossa touches in the mix – a bit of acoustic guitar or light percussion – but they're added in very sparely, and couched with a beautifully subtle wall of sound from arranger Nick Perito, who works here with a lot more understatement than on some other records. Como's vocals are very far from pop – and the album brings out his maturing style wonderfully with a spacious, soft-toned style of production. Titles include "Dindi", "Once I Loved", "Stay With Me", "How Insensitive", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Baia", and "Manha De Carnaval". Next is Perry Como In Italy – one of the most haunting albums we've ever heard from Perry Como – a session recorded in Italy during the mid 60s – featuring arrangements by Nick Perito, and backing vocals by the Alessandro Alessandroni Singers! The tunes include a fair bit of older Italian numbers – some sung in the language of their origin, some in English translations that we've come to know on this side of the Atlantic – and Como takes them all with a sad-tinged style that makes the album one of his moodiest ever – a record that oozes melancholy with every song, and which has a late nite, heartbreaking appeal that goes beyond even the understanding of language. The set's a great one to convey the popularity of Italian work on the American market in the 60s – and Como carries off the session even better than some of the more likely singers on the scene during the period. Titles include "Souvenir D'Italie", "Forget Domani", "Anema E Core", "One Day Is Like Another", "Arrivederci Roma", "Oh Marie", and "E Lei". Look To Your Heart is the kind of record that moves so far beyond familiar pop vocalizations, it's almost like Perry's in a universe all by himself! The words seem to just be sneaking out of the singer's voice – these mutterings that are almost to himself, which makes his readings of the tunes feel even more personal than you might expect – even amidst larger backings from Nick Perito – like Como is off to the side of the room, ruminating on love lost and life lived! That quality comes through tremendously on the eerie "Father Of Girls" – a tune that's worth the price of admission alone – and other titles include "Try To Remember", "Look To Your Heart", "In These Crazy Times", "Sunrise Sunset", and "When You're In Love". Seattle is a record that has Perry Como taking on a bit of a country tinge at times – working with Chet Atkins production that almost seems as if the singer is trying to match the Dean Martin spirit of the late 60s, right down to phrasing that feels a bit like ol Dino himself! A few other cuts have more familiar Como modes, with backings by Nick Perito – and titles include the lively title cut "Seattle", plus "Happiness Comes Happiness Goes", "Together Forever", "Sunshine Wine", "Deep In Your Heart", "Hearts Will Be Hearts", "Turnaround", and "Beady Eyed Buzzard". Verve/Elemental, 1966. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
Tremendous work from Bill Evans – one of his rare non-trio sides of the 60s – and a stunning batch of tunes with backings from the mighty Claus Ogerman! Most of the tunes here are of classical origin, but they're recast by Evans and Ogerman with almost a soundtrack sensitivity – Bill's piano up front, moving spaciously at very much its own pace – none of the too-virtuoso styles of other 60s jazz-meets-classical players. And Ogerman's backings are also great too – hardly ever strong, and more just light shading amidst the notes of Bill's piano – beautifully sliding in to bring a nice level of warm to the tunes. Titles include a sublime reading of "Pavane", plus the tracks "Granadas", "Time Remembered", "Blue Interlude", "Elegy", and "My Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

An album-length monster from Fela Kuti – and a cut that has him still burning strong in the final years of his too-short life! The cut "Overtake Don Overtake Overtake" is a funky monster – spanning both sides of the record with a choppy drawn-out groove that features a cool spacey electric piano solo, sad wailing sax, and some catchy vocals on the hook – all with a core acoustic vibe that shows no traces of Fela and the group leaning into 80s technology, as so many of their contemporaries were doing. The track's right up there with Fela's best work ever – and the later, more obscure origin of the album makes it tougher to find than some of the earlier records too! LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful later album from these two Coltrane bandmembers – reunited here in the early 80s, working in a mode that's very much in keeping with their rich spiritual jazz legacy! The group on the album's a quintet – with Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Richard Davis on bass, and Jean-Paul Bourelly on electric guitar. Sanders' majestic tenor solos really make the album sparkle – as he's blowing in a mode that feels a lot like Coltrane, circa 1963, touched with some of his own raspy soul, which makes for a different edge. Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 10CD ... $53.99 89.99
A gem of a package from one of our favorite film composers ever – a huge 10CD assortment of music from the earliest years of Michel Legrand – a set that shows just what an amazing career he was already having in Paris before his mid 60s rise on the international scene! The scope of work here is wonderful – and as you can guess from the title, the set includes only instrumental music from Legrand (although we will admit, there's a few vocals here and there) – which comprises not only early film scores and soundtrack contributions, but also some jazz projects and other instrumental recordings too – some more orchestral, others more in a groovy style that's like an instrumental take on early French pop! We're huge fans of Michel's music, and have lots of it in our collection already – but there's still a lot here that we'd not heard before – a whopping 234 tracks in all, with a completeness from these years that's echoed in the detailed notes, which are in both French and English. There's a huge amount of tracks we've never seen on CD, including lots of material from obscure French 7" EP releases – and the inside package offers the full details on the origin of all the many varied titles. Tremendous work from the Spanish scene of the 60s and early 70s – way more than just a batch of obscure jazz cuts, and instead a true testament to this very vibrant musical community! The package brings together some really special tracks from Spanish labels like Edigsa, Ensayo, Hispavox, and others – and really shows that in Spain at the time, there was musical growth that was every bit as strong as in better-known scenes in Germany, France, and Italy – a really rich step forward from American inspiration of the postwar years – into a world of freshly inventive rhythms, really imaginative solos, and some key local touches that really made the music sparkle! Not all players here are of Spanish origin, as the set also shows the key crossroads the scene was offering at the time – a wealth of wonderful hardbop, soul jazz, and modal numbers that include "El Cant Dels Ocells" by Catalonia Jazz Quartet, "Movimiento" by Lou Bennett, "Psique" by Juan Carlos Calderon, "Tema Per Alicia" by Jazz Group, "Asteriscs" by Nits De Jazz Al Jamboree, "Bosnia Calling" by Dusko Goykovich, "Israel" by Modern Jazz Sextet, "Rememberance To Madrid" by Elia Fleta, "Marcha De Los Dioses" by Tino Contreras, and "Laberinto (2nd part)" by Vlady Bas. A great lost crime jazz soundtrack – penned by Elmer Bernstein in the style of some of his best work from the 50s! There's a real Man With The Golden Arm feel here – as the orchestra rises and falls in a mode matching the Staccato title – and solos break out with a fluid and brazen sort of feel – plenty of jazz to show the west coast origin of the recording! Players include Don Fagerquist and Pete Candoli on trumpets, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash and Dave Pell on saxes, John Williams on piano, and Barney Kessell on guitar. The show itself is pretty darn cool – and starred a young John Cassavetes as detective Johnny Staccato – a role that supposedly gave Cassavetes enough money to shoot the film Shadows in his free time! P-Vine (Japan), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ray Harris is a heck of a great keyboardist – one with plenty of influences from the 60s and 70s, and a groove that more than lives up to the title of the set! The style's a bit less conventionally "fusion" than you might expect – and instead, there's almost a club jazz feel at times – modes from scenes like those at Irma or Ricky Tick, served up with plenty of warm touches, and a blend of real jazz instrumentation and solos with just a bit of occasionally programmed beats. Harris' plays piano, organ, clavinet, and Rhodes – often more than one on the same tune, for an approach that has that great blend of acoustic and electric elements you might find on some of the more soulful jazz sessions of the 70s. And there's also a bit of vocals on the record – but always used somewhat sparingly, in a way that takes a definite back stage to the long, grooving keyboard lines on the set! There's a bit of mad Spanish rapping from time to time – and the track has a nice mod groove! "Poquito" has stronger congas and more chants – with a very catchy groove, and a voice that goes "heeeey Chicano!" 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ William S BurroughsBreak Through In Grey Room ... CD
Sub Rosa/DAIS, 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums of material by William S Burroughs – and one of the few to really show his groundbreaking tape techniques! The album compiles a wealth of archival recordings – including obscure performances and experiments from the 60s, as well as Burroughs' own readings on his techniques and theories. The strongest value of the set is that it really gets past the "dottering old man rambling about the world" style of so many other Burroughs records – and gets at his truly revolutionary ideas about sound and language. An essential addition to any collection of sound art – with tracks that include "The Origin & Theory Of Tape Cut Ups", "Recalling All Active Agents", "Working With The Popular Forces", "Silver Smoke Of Dreams", "Junky Relations", "Interview With Mr Martin", "Joujouka", and "Sound Piece". ✨✧ East Of UndergroundHell Below (East Of Underground/Soap/Black Seeds/Sound Trek) (3CD set) ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". ✨✧ Eddie HarrisHere Comes The Judge ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great lost album from Eddie! The record was one of his few cut for Columbia – recorded between his early years at Vee Jay and his hit years at Atlantic – and it's an excellent little batch of cuts, with a tight Chicago soulful grooving sound, and a strong approach that mixes hardbop and soul jazz in a very nice way. Some of the material is pop in origin – like "Goldfinger" and "People" – but even those tracks are done very nicely, with a nice groove and Eddie's biting sax firmly in place. Other titles include "East End Blues", "Rice Pudding", "That's Tough", and "Ineffable". LP, Vinyl record album

Importe/12, 1982. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A classic electro groove – and one of the tracks that's a contender for the origin of the word "hip hop"! A very nice groove with an early Arthur Baker feel, and the kind of cut that we slept on during the 80s, but which sounds totally great today! 3 different edits. 12-inch, Vinyl record
