Captain HammondOrigin Of Captain Hammond ... CD
Hammond Beat, 2007. Used ... $6.99
Captain Hammond's a hero who definitely lives up to his name – a cat who hits the instrument hard – really wailing here with a classic 60s approach to his instrument! The album's awash in wonderful organ lines – grooves that are sometimes jazzy, sometimes more in a mod soul instrumental mode – backed with snapping drums and a bit of electric guitar, and recorded with a really perfect sound overall! Despite a somewhat gimmicky cover, there's a really solid feel to the set – a groove that would be right at home in some lost indie side from the 60s – especially the type that might play strongly on the London mod scene. Titles include "Half Man Half Organ", "Louder Than Sound", "Mechanaut", "Fired Up", "Universal Milk", "Full Steam Ahead", and "Don't Burst My Bubble". CD

Origin, 2011. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little showcase for some truly legendary jazz lifers – Ira Sullivan and Stu Katz – collaborators of more than a half century doing their thing wonderfully over a handful of dates at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago in the summer of '10! This is literally a Family Affair, that ain't just a title – with Stu's son Steve Katz producing, playing bass on one number, and given credit for documenting the fellas at this stage of the game. Sullivan's on saxes, trumpet and fluegelhorn, Katz is on vibes most of the way, but sits at the piano for "Pennies From Heaven". Dan Trundel is also on piano, with Dennis Carroll on bass and George Fludas on drums. Includes "Blues Two Views", "Gee, Matthew", "Scrapple From The Apple", "Take The 'A' Train", "Yesterdays" featuring vocals by Lucia Newell, "Stablemates", "Lullaby Of The Leaves" and more. CD

✨✧ Rodney WhitakerAll Too Soon – The Music Of Duke Ellington ... CD
Origin, 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very fresh take on the songs of Duke Ellington – presented here by bassist Rodney Whitaker, with a tight combo sound that resonates strongly with his other great records! The tunes are definitely Duke's, but the presentation is pure Whitaker – hip, soulful, and reworked with nicely contemporary elements – played by a strong lineup that features Michael Dease on trombone, Brian Lynch on trumpet, Diego Rivera on tenor, Richard Roe on piano, and Karriem Riggins on drums – plus vocals from Rockelle Whitaker at a few points too. It's nice to have the bass up in the lead on some of these tunes – and titles include "Cotton Tail", "All Too Soon", "Perdido", "Come Sunday", "Azure", "Caravan", "Harlem Air Shaft", and "Take The A Train". ✨✧ Marlene RosenbergMLK Convergence ... CD
Origin, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Bassist Marlene Rosenberg leads a hell of a trio here – one that features Kenny Barron on piano and Lewis Nash on drums – both tremendous players who sound even better in the round, rich company of Rosenberg's bass! Most titles are trio numbers, but driven as much by the bass as by the always-wonderful work of Barron – and the tunes include many originals by Marlene – instrumentals, but with a current of the more righteous energy promised by the title. One exception is the great "Not The Song I Wanna Sing" – a number that has Rosenberg on vocals while Christian McBride handles the bass – alongside other vocal contributions from Thomas Burrell and Robert Irving III – which help make the song the most political number on the set. Titles include "The Line Between", "American Violet", "Togetherness", "And Still we Rise", "Visions", "The Barron", "Rain", "Love's In Need Of Love Today", and "Not The Song I Wanna Sing". CD

✨✧ Markus RutzBlueprints Figure Two – New Designs ... CD
Origin, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Well-crafted work from trumpeter Markus Rutz – a player who knows how to move a group with a strong sense of color and swing, but also keep things sharp at an individual level – almost as if he's taken the energy of a larger ensemble, and found a way to express things with a smaller combo! In addition to Rutz on trumpet, the Chicago group also features Brice Winston on saxes, Adrian Ruiz on piano, Matt Gold on guitar, Marcos Varela on bass, Heitor Garcia on percussion, and either Marcus Evans or Xavier Breaker on drums – a group that moves well under the direction of Markus – tight, but never with a sense of flow that's inorganic. Titles include the originals "East To West", "Shipmates", "A Cidade Do Vento", "The Musicianer", and "Keppard's Kerchief". CD

BelmontsBelmonts A Go Go (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Orfeon (Mexico), Mid 60s. Used ... $9.99
60s jangle pop from The Belmonts – a group who were almost Mexico's answer to the Brit Invasion scene of the time! The combo definitely dig plenty of 60s sounds from the UK – some of which they recreate here in a garagey blend of guitars and Spanish language lyrics – all with a feel that's quite strange, and often much more rough-edged than the famous versions of the tunes. Other tracks are of American origin, and a few are compositions by the group – all laid out nicely in a very groovy set of 17 tracks in all! Titles include "Aprietalo", "Ven Ya", "Verano En La Cuidad", "La Carta", "El Esquimal", "Paginas De Pasado", "Me Siento Bien", and "Que Les Das". CD

✨✧ John Cameron/Alan ParkerKPM 1000 – Afro Rock ... CD
KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1973. Used ... $24.99
African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. DaktarisSoul Explosion (original pressing) ... CD
Desco, 1998. Used ... $7.99
Reputedly, this is an African funk band recorded recently by the folks at Desco Records – but as with a lot of their projects, we're not entirely sure whether or not to believe them, since they're always a bit too mysterious about the origins of their material, and this may just be some new grooves, cut by a funk band of non-African origin. Whatever the case, though, the record kicks butt, and is a very tight batch of funky instrumentals that have a classic sound that hints at Fela, Manu Dibango, and other Afro Funk artists of the 70's. There's lots of choppy guitar grooves, heavy percussion, and raw blaring sax solos. Very nice stuff, and every bit as great as the other stuff on Desco! Cuts include a cover of Fela's "Upside Down", James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", and the originals "Super Afro-Beat", "Daktari Walk", "Voodoo Soul Stew", and "Quiet Man Is A Dead Man". CD

East Of UndergroundHell Below (East Of Underground/Soap/Black Seeds/Sound Trek) (3CD set) ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. New Copy 3CD ... $12.99 24.98
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". Dorothy MooreTalk To Me ... LP
Malaco, 1980. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A wonderful record from Dorothy Moore – done at a time when the singer was not only one of the leading lights of the southern soul scene, but also maybe the heir apparent to styles that had previously been handled by giants like Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, or Shirley Brown! Many of the tunes here have an older origin – soul or pop songs of the 50s and 60s – but they're reworked in that hip Malaco blend of deep soul and modern soul modes – warmed up a little, but never too much – given contemporary instrumentation, but never in a way that's too commercial. Titles include "It's All In The Game", "Angel Of The Morning", "Something", "If I Could Feel That Old Feeling Again", "Crazy In Love", "Lonely", and "Talk To Me/Every Beat Of My Heart". Fantastic 80s work from Pharoah Sanders – with a vibe that's a perfect extension of his classic work for the Impulse label! The album has Pharoah working with an amazing group – Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, John Hicks and Joe Bonner on piano, Art Davis on bass, and either Elvin Jones or Billy Higgins on drums. The sound is remarkably fresh – soaring and spiritual, but also more focused than in earlier years, with a great amount of soulful warmth. And although extra elements are added – like vocals, vibes, and added percussion – Pharoah's solos still dominate the whole album beautifully. Kyriakos SfetsasGreek Fusion Orchestra Vol 2 ... CD
Teranga Beat (Senegal), 1977. Used ... $11.99
Totally wonderful sounds from an artist who mixes Greek musical styles with tight 70s jazz modes – not the electric fusion that you'd guess from the title, but instead a really unique criss-crossing of two different cultures! There's plenty to love here if you love soulful 70s jazz – as most tracks have creative rhythms that expand upon modal styles, and there's an excellent saxophonist in the group – unnamed, but a player whose talents really make the whole thing sparkle when he takes a solo! Basslines are usually electric, but in a laidback way – and most of the other instrumentation is more traditionally jazz-based, not Greek in origin. Titles include "40 Steps", "On A Folk Mode", "Alternative Aspect", "From A Foreign Land", "Imprints", and "The Widow". CD

Barney WilenPassione (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 1995. New Copy ... $56.99
A great little set from Barney Wilen's late revival period – strong, solid blowing all the way through – with a depth that almost matches his classics from the early days! The group here is a quintet – with Enrico Rava on trumpet in the frontline alongside Wilen's tenor and soprano sax – often joining Barney tightly on the head arrangements, in a mode that's strongly soulful, with plenty of classic touches. Many of the tunes are familiar jazz standards, but stretched out nicely with lots of room to roam around – and a few great numbers on the set are of European origin, shorter, but with some wonderful colors and tones that Wilen illuminates with his horn – and which the group plays with a slightly Latin flair in the rhythms. VariousBrasa 4 ... CD
Bemol/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. Used ... $11.99
A cool collection of late 60s rock and pop from Brazil – and a set that stands as a nice contrast to some of the "song festival" albums from the time on Philips and Odeon! Like those sets, this one presents up-and-coming artists working through a variety of material – but rather than showcasing new styles, the modes here are maybe more in the jovem guarda style of the mid 60s – a bit more slavishly tied to American and European styles, although a few of the tunes here are of Brazilian origin too. There's a bit more complexity and sophistication to the music than the chart pop of a few years before – kind of in the way that west coast pop rock acts were letting their hair down a bit by the late 60s – and titles include "Como E Grande O Meu Amor Por Voce" by Os Intrusus, "O Que Ha De Mal Em Mim" by Bitons, "You Only Live Twice" by Os Agitadores, "When Summer Is Gone" by Analfabitles, "Voce Nao Serve Pra Mim" by Amir Francisco, and "Travessia" by Edinho. VariousFeten – Rare Jazz Recordings From Spain 1961 to 1974 ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99
Tremendous work from the Spanish scene of the 60s and early 70s – way more than just a batch of obscure jazz cuts, and instead a true testament to this very vibrant musical community! The package brings together some really special tracks from Spanish labels like Edigsa, Ensayo, Hispavox, and others – and really shows that in Spain at the time, there was musical growth that was every bit as strong as in better-known scenes in Germany, France, and Italy – a really rich step forward from American inspiration of the postwar years – into a world of freshly inventive rhythms, really imaginative solos, and some key local touches that really made the music sparkle! Not all players here are of Spanish origin, as the set also shows the key crossroads the scene was offering at the time – a wealth of wonderful hardbop, soul jazz, and modal numbers that include "El Cant Dels Ocells" by Catalonia Jazz Quartet, "Movimiento" by Lou Bennett, "Psique" by Juan Carlos Calderon, "Tema Per Alicia" by Jazz Group, "Asteriscs" by Nits De Jazz Al Jamboree, "Bosnia Calling" by Dusko Goykovich, "Israel" by Modern Jazz Sextet, "Rememberance To Madrid" by Elia Fleta, "Marcha De Los Dioses" by Tino Contreras, and "Laberinto (2nd part)" by Vlady Bas. ✨✧ AfriqueSoul Makossa ... CD
Mainstream/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer album of Afro Funk – with a very unusual origin! In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that situation – kind of a quickie project issued by Mainstream Records to cash in on the hit – but it's also an amazing bit of lost funk, and a record that's lasted for years in the hearts of beatheads! The group's a studio combo headed by Richard Fritz – and includes funky drummer Paul Humphrey, organist Charles Kynard, and guitarist David T Walker – all players we can trust to keep things groovy. The record does include a version of "Soul Makossa" that's pretty great – but even better is the breakbeat classic "House Of The Rising Funk", apparently the same version of the track that was issued on a 45 under the name The Chubukos. Other nice ones include "Kissing My Love", "Hot Mud", "Get It", "Hot Doggin", and "Let Me Do My Thing". CD

Mar, Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
22 track reissue that takes Billy Butler's classic Chicago soul album, The Right Track (recorded for Okeh in the mid 60's), and adds a whole bunch of bonus cuts that were only available as singles. Great stuff that we never see on wax, and nearly every cut's a winner. Solid proof that Jerry Butler wasn't the only talented member of the Butler family, and a great document of the great soul coming out of Chicago in the 60's. This reissue's of slightly dubious origin (we can't seem to figure out who put it out), but the quality's good, and it's the only way we can find tracks like "I'm Just a Man", "Can't Live Without Her", and "My Heart Is Hurting". ✨✧ Bill EvansBill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Bill Evans – one of his rare non-trio sides of the 60s – and a stunning batch of tunes with backings from the mighty Claus Ogerman! Most of the tunes here are of classical origin, but they're recast by Evans and Ogerman with almost a soundtrack sensitivity – Bill's piano up front, moving spaciously at very much its own pace – none of the too-virtuoso styles of other 60s jazz-meets-classical players. And Ogerman's backings are also great too – hardly ever strong, and more just light shading amidst the notes of Bill's piano – beautifully sliding in to bring a nice level of warm to the tunes. Titles include a sublime reading of "Pavane", plus the tracks "Granadas", "Time Remembered", "Blue Interlude", "Elegy", and "My Bells". CD

✨✧ Rufus HarleyScotch & Soul ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gimmicky cover, a gimmick title, but one heck of a soulful set of jazz! The legendary Rufus Harley is a true original – a saxophonist who also plays bagpipes, but can wail on that instrument – along with tenor and soprano sax – in a mode that's strongly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane, Yusef, Lateef, and Eric Dolphy! This early set for Atlantic features Rufus in a kilt – but actually does a deeply righteous thing by returning the bagpipes to their African origin (supposedly the instrument was brought up to the British Isles during the Crusades) – and laying them out here in a sweet mix of modal moments and heavier soul jazz. The mix of modes is a lot like the best work of Yusef Lateef – and like Lateef, Harley hails from the Detroit jazz underground –a nd works here with a hip group of players from that scene – including Oliver Collins on piano, James Glenn on bass, and Billy Abner on drums. Robert Gossett adds in a bit of congas, to give the tunes even more groove than usual – and the whole thing's an important early expression of spiritual modes that would flourish even more strongly in the 70s. Titles include "Passing The Cup Around", "Taurus The 20th", "Sufur", and "Scotch & Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful later album from these two Coltrane bandmembers – reunited here in the early 80s, working in a mode that's very much in keeping with their rich spiritual jazz legacy! The group on the album's a quintet – with Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Richard Davis on bass, and Jean-Paul Bourelly on electric guitar. Sanders' majestic tenor solos really make the album sparkle – as he's blowing in a mode that feels a lot like Coltrane, circa 1963, touched with some of his own raspy soul, which makes for a different edge. Titles include "Little Rock's Blues", 'Hip Jones", "For Tomorrow", "Korina", and "Origin". CD

A gem of a package from one of our favorite film composers ever – a huge 10CD assortment of music from the earliest years of Michel Legrand – a set that shows just what an amazing career he was already having in Paris before his mid 60s rise on the international scene! The scope of work here is wonderful – and as you can guess from the title, the set includes only instrumental music from Legrand (although we will admit, there's a few vocals here and there) – which comprises not only early film scores and soundtrack contributions, but also some jazz projects and other instrumental recordings too – some more orchestral, others more in a groovy style that's like an instrumental take on early French pop! We're huge fans of Michel's music, and have lots of it in our collection already – but there's still a lot here that we'd not heard before – a whopping 234 tracks in all, with a completeness from these years that's echoed in the detailed notes, which are in both French and English. A totally wonderful little soundtrack – Brazilian in origin, but with lots of the lush, warm tones we love in 70s Italian erotic scores too! The style is definitely Brazilian, though – and modes run from some of the cooler, larger arrangements you'd hear from Marcos Valle – especially in his early 70s years – to some moments that are a bit more spare, and mix in rootsy percussion, sweet keyboards, and jazzy touches on Fender Rhodes – which makes for a really wonderful blend of styles! The record's one that we'd rank equally next to our favorite Emi/Odeon grooves from the time – and next to some of our sweetest, grooviest European soundtracks of the early 70s – and titles inclkude "Seios", "Despedida", "Espairecendo", "You Can't Run Away From Your Destiny", "Panorama", "Amazonia", and "Quarto De Hotel". Henry Stone, Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's not much of a cover on this one – but the music is plenty plenty funky – and the set features a great selection of rare work recorded as funky 45s for the TK family of labels in the 60s and 70s! The groove here is much harder and deeper than you'd expect if you only know TK from its bigger hits of the time – a fiercely wailing approach that shows that the label could record some excellent funk that easily matched the best work coming out of the northern cities at the time. And in fact, there's very few "Miami" touches here overall – because the groove these guys lay down is often much more in keeping with styles we know from Ohio, Chicago, and New York groups of the time. But whatever the origin or label, we can say that the set's an excellent one for any fan of deep deep deep funk – and it features a total of 14 tracks that include "Cutting Room (Hot Pants)" and "It's Allright" byOcean Liners, "Lay It On Me Baby" by Willie Johnson, "Hey Sexy" by King Tutt, "I'm Afraid Of The Dark" by Jonny K, "Funky Cat" by James Knight, "Look What You Can Get" by Funky Nassau, "Nasty Dog" by The Mighty Dogcatchers, "Soul Food" by Franky Seay, and "I Got A Thing For You Baby" by Mr Percolator. We don't know the film at all, but the non-stop flow of groovy tunes makes us feel as if we've already experienced the narrative – especially as some titles have very cool wordless vocals, ala some of the groovy Hugo Montenegro late 60s albums on RCA. CD features 27 titles in all – and tracks include "Nude Studio", "Fashion Show", "The Origin Of The Party", "The Next Move", "The Dance Is Fun", "Plan Success", and "The Fragrance Of The Roll Of Bills". ✨✧ Mind Maintenance (Joshua Abrams & Chad Taylor)Mind Maintenance ... LP
Drag City, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Joshua Abrams and Chad Taylor are already fantastic musicians on their own key instruments – bass and drums, respectively – but here, they take up different instrumental modes – and with a result that's every bit as spiritually powerful as their work in other styles! Abrams plays guimbri, a bass-like instrument of Gnawan origin – but one that features just three strings, and a much smaller tonal range – which he uses here in ways that are nicely focused, and often rhythmic – these progressions that are balanced by Taylor's wonderful sounds on mbira – the instrument that most folks know as the African thumb piano! Taylor makes these beautifully melodic sounds, and Adams moves between plucking his instrument, and using it in percussive modes too – a really wonderful blend. Titles include "Glow & Glimmer", "Slack Water", "Complete Rain", "Mental Eyes", "Valence", "Snap Yr Teeth", "The Ladder", and "Entrainment". LP, Vinyl record album

Daptone, 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos". LP, Vinyl record album

Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant 80s set from Pharoah Sanders – a record that has him a much more understated setting than some of his other albums from the time – but one that's maybe even more soulful and searching overall! The great one plays blistering tenor right from the start – in a quartet with John Hicks on piano, Curtis Lundy on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums – all players who have this way of doing a lot with a little, especially in the rhythm department – where they seem to give Sanders some of his strongest sense of groove since the key albums for Theresa. Muhammad's got this tight sense of timekeeping, but with a looseness that we love – and Lundy's warm soulful bass does more than enough to give the set a sound bottom – and Hicks' free lyrical piano works nicely with Sanders' spiritual horn. Titles include a remake of "You've Got To Have Freedom", plus "Naima", "Origin", "Speak Low", "After The Morning", and "Africa". Also features the tracks "Duo" and "Heart To Heart" – not on the vinyl release! CD

RIC/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
All the best early work of the New Orleans legend Eddie Bo – his first nine singles for the Ric label, both a and b-sides – along with originally unissued tracks as well! The work here spans a short time, but really shows an evolution in Eddie's style – from an initial start as a singer with a groove that was right up there with Crescent City bests of the R&B years, to a style that begins to have some of the funk and soul touches that Bo would explore more in the 60s! As usual with Ace, the presentation of the material is wonderful – very rich notes, and full details on the origin of all the tracks, even the unissued ones, which only appeared as 7" singles on a Record Store Day box a few years ago. Tracks include "Bless You Darling", "Roamin Titis", "Nothing Without You", "I'll Do Anything For You", "Check Mr Popeye", "Baby I'm Wise", "Hey There Baby", "Warm Daddy", "Dinky Doo", "It Must Be Love", and "Ain't It The Truth Now". A spiritual set from 70s France – but one that has a very different origin than most! Chene Noir come from a theatrical background, and do a wonderful job of mixing up elements – that free-spirited sense of genre-stepping that took place on the French scene after the initial inspirations of visiting American avant players in the late 60s – given a fresh sense of expression in the Saravah generation, in modes that were often overlooked at the time by the rest of the world! The music here is definitely jazz, but brings in some sense of performance too – spoken passages, some vocals – served up in a mix of saxes, vibes, organ, Fender Rhodes, and percussion – the sort of work that someone like Pierre Barouh would have liked to capture in the studio. Titles include "Le Viel Orphee", "Musique De La Nuit", "Musique Du Vieux", "La Route De La Mer", "La Chute", "La Musique D'Orphee", and "Chemin D'Ou L'On Ne Revient Pas". LP, Vinyl record album

Analog Africa (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible compilation of material by Mestre Cupijo and the musicians of Cameta – the Amazonian town where the Siria style was born! The always-great Analog Africa label turns to Brazil for this one – a nice step after their rich range of African reissues – given the nature of the material. The people of the region include many of African origin, and the music is an exciting mix of tropical rhythms and percussion, seemingly African-inspired horns, guitar and vocals. Mestre Cupijo recorded a half dozen records from the mid 70s to early 80s, capturing the time-honored regional style in a modernized setting, and this compilation puts some of the best of that material together in a really exciting set. Revelatory stuff! Includes "Mingau De Acai", "Mambo Do Martelo", Morena Do Rio Mutuaca", "Farol Do Marajo", "Cade O Anel?", "Ventinho Do Norte", "Pra Danca Meu Siria", "Passarinho Siriri" and more. Pye/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge package – four full albums by this excellent soul group – plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hand Clappin Foot Stompin Funky Butt Live – filled with sockin soul from Geno Washington – an ex-American marine who recorded to big fame in the UK in the late 60s – working with the legendary Ram Jam Band, an act that rivaled some of the best American combos of the southern party circuit at the time! The approach here is certainly soul-based, but it's also something different – given the actual overseas origin of the recording – and in a way, the record's a perfect example of the influence that African-American military had in Europe in the 60s – as their presence on the continent really helped to shape and authenticate the sounds of some already-willing overseas combos. Geno's vocals are great, and the tracks are all upbeat and lively – very much what you'd expect from the title! Titles include "Philly Dog", "Ride Your Pony", "Road Runner", "Up Tight", "Land Of 1000 Dance", "Que Sera Sera", "Get Down With It", and "Willy Nilly". Shake A Tail Feather is a hard-smoking album that bears all the best 60s hallmarks of Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band! The album's not as much a live effort as the previous two, but still keeps all the best spontaneous qualities in the music – a feel that really makes you think that Washington and the band were just partying in the studio, rattling the tunes off as they came to them – with all the confidence and swagger earned from a never-ending stream of gigs in the UK! Titles include "Raise Your Hand", "You Got Me Hummin", "Tell It Like It Is", "Use Me", "Understanding", "Knock On Wood", "I'm Your Puppet", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Hold On To My Love". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks – including "Seven Eleven", "Alison Please", "Each & Every Part Of Me", "Give Em A Hand", and "Dirty Dirty". Next is Hipsters Flipsters Finger Poppin Daddies – a bit of soul, a bit of R&B, a bit of beat group grooving – all wrapped up in a classic 60s set from Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band! Geno's American roots are inflected and appreciated strongly here – not just by the Ram Jam combo, who groove things up with plenty of influences from Atlantic and Sue Records – but also by the audience, who seem to go even more crazy for Geno than the crowds at the Apollo did for James Brown! Washington's vocals are somewhat rough and raspy – perhaps not the instant hit sort of sound for the US market, but a perfect fit for the rougher-edged grooves going on here – partyful soul that's never too poised, and which features lots of covers of 60s classics throughout. Titles include "Herk's Works", "Day Tripper", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Shotgun", "Raise Your Hand", "Who's Foolin Who", "It's A Wonder", and "Wild Thing". Last up is one more live album – Runnin Wild – with 11 more tracks that include "Rock Me Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "High Heel Sneakers/Mary Ann", "Knock On Wood", "I Take What I Want", "Gimme A Little Sign/Raise Your Hand", "I Got You Babe", and "I Get So Excited". Plus, the package features 33 more bonus tracks – including later singles, rare b-sides, and some EP-only tracks! CD

Bemol/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Weird and wonderful work from the Southeast Asian scene of the 60s – very cool grooves that show a heavy influence from American rockers of the time! The lyrics here are often sung in English, and the music is filled with the same sort of jangly guitars, driving drums, and mod-styled rhythms you'd find in US rock and roll from the mid 60s – but the overall sound is quite unusual, too – given the Asian origin of all these cuts! It's almost like hearing the 60s through some sort of odd prism that distorts the familiar – which makes for a fascinating set of tracks you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere! Titles include "One To Nine Walkin" by Patrina, "Sudi Sudi Kah Dikau" by Ismail Haron & The Guys, "Swim Swim Swim" by The Spacemen, "Lonely Heart" by Rita Chao, "Flamingo" by The Bees, "Mr Twister" by The Crescendos, "The Second Spring" by Hai Fei, and "Just Because" by The Dee Tee's. Plastic Strip Press (Norway), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the funkiest grooves we've ever heard from the European scene – all tracks from the late 60s and early 70s, recorded as part of the legendary Club 7 in Oslo! Although of Norwegian origin, most of these numbers lean heavily towards American funky styles of soul and jazz at the end of the 60s – grooves that are loose and free, and which often feature some surprisingly great English language vocals – some sung by American soulster Earl Wilson, who was part of the scene at the time, and a key influence on most of the grooves here. The package is a real discovery for our ears – and given that most of these numbers were recorded by the Norwegian broadcasting system for radio play, they weren't really issued publicly at the time – making this collection almost a "sound library soul" set! Titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Hot Pants", "Come On Children", "Them Changes", and "Moment Of Truth" by The Band No Name; "Groovin" by Karin Krog & Fred Noddelund, "Lite Lite" and "Tamma Song" by Tamma, "Night IN Barcelona" and "Oslo Late July" by Kjellerrock Jazzbandet, "California Soul" and "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" by Geir Wentzel's Orkester, and "Otinku" by Modern Sound Quintet. US Army/Now Again, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $3.99 14.98
A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. One of the greatest albums ever from James Brown – even if it wasn't issued during his classic run of funk records in the early 70s! Yet the material here is all from that time – recorded by Polydor when James and the JBs were completely kicking ass in the studio – turning out these monstrous longform funk jams that often gave up too much material to fit on all of his albums – which makes this package an overdue dip into the vaults to rescue some of those treasures! The package first saw the light of day in 1988 – at a time when the genius of James was being rediscovered by younger hip hoppers and DJs – and the set is a love letter to all that James had to offer that scene – with gems that include the lost soul classic "She's The One", a duet with Bobby Byrd called "Since You Been Gone", a live version of "There It Is", an untitled instrumental and another instrumental one called "Funk Bomb" – plus a huge long 9 minute version of the great "People Get Up & Drive Your Funky Soul" from Slaughter's Big Ripoff, and the cuts "Say It Loud & Live", and "Baby Here I Come". Rare material from the sessions for one of the greatest jazz albums ever – the legendary 1959 Time Out album by the Dave Brubeck quartet – expanded here with unreleased outtakes from the recording date, which include two tracks that were not even on the original record! The sound of the group is legendary – the crisp alto of Paul Desmond next to the ever-shifting, always-rhythmic piano of Brubeck – the man who brought modern jazz to the masses – aided with the fantastic bass of Eugene Wright and razor-sharp drum work of Joe Morello – every bit as great here as on the album that was released! The first five tracks are pretty close to the originals, with slight variations – a testament to the well-rehearsed nature of the group – but the added tunes really show the record in formation, as does the extra banter between the band that's included at the end. A beautiful little record from the glory days of the acid folk scene in the UK – a set served up by Clive Palmer, who you might know from work in Incredible String Band and Wizz Jones – sounding even more enigmatic here at the helm of a trio who were produced by the legendary Ralph McTell! The style is light years from the more traditional sounds of some of Ralph's music – very moody and dark, with instrumentation that comes from guitar, recorder, and a variety of other instruments – including the unusual dulcitar, which was invented by trio member John Bidwell! Lead vocals are from Clive and Mick Bennett – alternating on different tracks, and harmonizing with a very eerie vibe, one that's further expanded by the unusual production modes too. Eumir Deodato, Tom Jobim, & OthersBossa Nova – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 2000. Used ... $3.99
Kind of a painful movie, but a pretty sweet soundtrack! The set features a number of new works produced by Deodato, very much in the spirit of his Inutil Paisagem 60s bossa recordings – with wonderfully complex airy melodies, and a touch so light you can't believe there's actually a conscious act behind the music. The new titles feature vocals by Barbara Mendes and Carol Rogers – and include "Samba De Uma Nota So", "Mary Ann's Theme", "Suddenly", "Soul Mates", "Amor Em Paz", and "Juan's Theme". Most of the rest of the CD features older work from Jobim's years at Verve and CTI – including the tracks "Wave", "Aguas De Marco", "Chega De Saudade", and "Inutil Paisagem". Also features a semi-painful duet between Jobim and Sting – ouch! CD

Neil DiamondVelvet Gloves & Spit (original pressing) ... LP
Uni, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
Neil Diamond's first official LP for the Uni label – originally released in 1968 – a great record that was initially way underappreciated! This is a solid portrait of Neil that's too often overlooked – with his heart-on-sleeve lyrical sensibility and anthemic songcraft on full display long before the glittery, superstar trappings of his 70s ouvre! His vocals and catchy tunefulness are as extroverted as ever, in a post Brill Building groove that's B-I-G, loads of fun, and not nearly as hamfisted as later stuff! Includes "Two-Bit Manchild", "Pot Smokers Song" (OK, this one is pure honeyglazed ham – but it's the good tasty kind), "Brooklyn Roads", "Sunday Sun", "Practically Newborn", "Knackelflerg", "Merry-Go-Round" and more. Dining Rooms with Sean MartinWhen You Died (original, Massimo Martellotta rmx) ... 7-inch
Schema (Italy), 2020. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $6.99
Sean Martin provides some great lead vocals on this slinky groove from The Dining Rooms – a tune that's got riffing guitar nestled right down in the rhythms, and a fuller, funkier feel as things move on! The remix on the flip really changes things up nicely – dropping the guitar for a more 80s-styled bassline that's also peppered with plenty of warm keys – an equally great setting for Martin's vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Bob DylanJohn Wesley Harding (Original Master Recording) ... CD
Columbia/Mobile Fidelity, 1968. Used Gatefold ... $28.99
A pivotal album for Bob Dylan – a record that continues the Nashville experiment of Blonde On Blonde, but which compresses it a bit more – almost like he's re-folding the electric energy back into the darkness of the spare sound of Times They Are A-Changin! Bob plays guitar, harmonica, and piano – in a core trio that just features Charlie McCoy on bass and Kenny Buttrey on drums – plus a bit of added steel guitar from Pete Drake. The album's filled with complicated dark little numbers like "All Along The Watchtower", "The Ballad Of Frankie Lee & Judas Priest", "I Am A Lonesome Hobo", "I Pity The Poor Immigrant", "The Wicked Messenger", "As I Went Out One Morning", and "Down Along The Cove". Gerald FriedDino – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Epic, 1957. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A dark soundtrack to this mid 50s film that starred Sal Mineo as a scrawny JD (what else!) The tracks are mostly orchestral, but have a bit of Elmer Bernstein or Leith Stevens type jazz in them – blaring out from time to time amidst the strings to set the dangerous mood of the film. Titles include "Waiting & Conclusion", "Little Jazz", "Saturday Night", "Nightmare", "Reform School", and "Death In A Warehouse". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear and aging, mostly split top seam, and a wide center split in the bottom seam held with some clear tape.)

Marvin GayeWhat's Going On (original Detroit mix) ... LP
Motown/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $42.99 About July 25, 2021
One of the few cases in the history of pop music where the record is worth all the hype! Marvin blew everyone's mind when he unleashed this amazing suite of political soul tunes – not only just because he'd moved past the simple love songs of earlier years, but also because he was working with an amazingly complicated approach to soul music, one that would touch the work of others for years to come. David Van DePitte arranged and conducted the whole album – with soaring orchestrations mixed with smooth modern soul, in a style that reminds us a lot of the work of Charles Stepney at Cadet, who'd been doing this sort of thing for years but with less success. In the hands of Marvin Gaye, though, the material has an amazing quality – and all the disparate elements of the album are fused together in one powerful message by Marvin's incredible voice. One that we never tire of, and a record to be listened to all the way through every time. Titles include "What's Goin On", "Save The Children", "Flyin High (In The Friendly Sky)", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". This limited Japanese pressing presents the vinyl debut of the rare Detroit mix – done in the Motor City before the final version in California – slightly different in a few ways, but with all the heavenly elements still intact! Gilberto GilEu Tu Eles – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Warner (Brazil), 2000. Used ... $4.99
A striking soundtrack written and performed by Gilberto Gil – most of which has a rootsy forro style, to accompany the rural setting of the film. Gil's actually pretty good at this style, and the work's a refreshing change from some of his more recent recordings. Features a remake of "Asa Branca", plus the tunes "Juazeiro", "Esparando No Janela", "Qui Nem Jilo", "Pau De Arara", "Casinha Feliz", and "O Amor Daqui De Casa". CD

✨✧ Joao GilbertoLegendary Joao Gilberto – The Original Bossa Nova Recordings 1958 to 1961 ... CD
Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A treasure – some of the first and best bossa nova work ever recorded! This completely essential set compiles most of Joao Gilberto's early recordings for the EMI/Odeon label in Brazil – remarkably influential tracks recorded from the years 1958 to 1961, featuring a young Joao on guitar and vocals, warmly carving out the bossa nova sound that would go on to influence generations of musicians, and which still remains some of his greatest recorded work ever! 38 tracks in all – with titles that include "Chega De Saudade", "O Pato", "E Luxo So", "Brigas Nunca Mais", "Saudade Fez Um Samba", "Trenzinho", "Este Seu Olhar", "Lobo Bobo", "O Barquinho", "Trevo De 4 Folhas", and "Aos Pes Da Cruz". Paul GiovanniWicker Man – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Silva (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... About September 3, 2021
❔
One of the maddest soundtracks you'll ever want – a strange mix of folksy tunes, sound effects, and odd noisy bits – recorded for the equally odd film of the same name! The record is impossible to describe accurately, but it's a really dark one – strangely fragile at some moments, with a sing-song intensity that almost makes it feel like some of the late 80s pagan folk efforts of David Tibet. Side 1 features some of the more song-based numbers. Side two is the incidental soundtrack grooves. Titles include "Chop Chop", "Corn Rigs", "Appointment WithThe Wicker Man", "Searching For Rowan", "Hobby Horse", "Summer Is A-Cumen In", and "Maypole". 16 tracks in all! LP, Vinyl record album
