EmbryoOpal ... CD
United Artists/Ohr (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... About May 28, 2021
One of the great space rock records of the early 70s – the debut from the mighty Embryo – a lynchpin in the uncompromising jazz, prog & rock to come – and really one of the more underappreciated early Krautrock efforts! Embryo is working in a pretty amazing mode here, with hypnotic percussion, incredible drums and irresistible bass grooves that keeping in more of an spacey prog rock realm than some of the jazzier efforts later on, but it's an unpredictable, timeless and rewarding gem all the way. Includes "Opal", "You Don't Know What's Happening", "Revolution", "Glockenspiel", "Got No Time", "Call", "End Of Soul", "People From Out Of Space". CD

David LiebmanOpal Heart ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual Australian session from reedman Dave Liebman – one that features some wonderful contributions from the great Mike Nock on piano! Nock's bold, rich sense of sound is a great pairing with Liebman's work on tenor and soprano sax – and a number of the cuts have a vibe that's very different than some of Dave's recordings with Richie Beirach – his most frequent partner on the keys – even though the group features more familiar rhythm players Ron McClure on bass and Ed Soph on drums. We really love Mike's sense of tone and timing, and here his contributions are wonderful – on titles that include "Sunburst", "I Concentrate On You", "The Opal Hearted Aborigine", "Port Ligat", and "Down Under". CD

✨✧ Kuzu (Dave Rempis/Taqshi Dorji/Tyler Damon)Purple Dark Opal ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous single improvisation by this very hip trio – Taqshi Dorji on guitar, Tyler Damon on drums, and Dave Rempis on alto, tenor, and baritone sax! The drums have this very resonant quality at times – almost acting with elements that make up for the lack of a bass at times – while the guitar moves through more abstract sonic textures that are maybe some of the sharpest elements in the set – as Rempis blows with a beautifully soulful vibe, and really helps balance the sound, and ground the whole thing with his amazing, never-ending sense of imagination! The set features the 55 minute piece "To The Quick" – recorded live at Sugar Maple in Milwaukee. CD

Brian EnoRams – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Opal/Universal, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Great soundtrack work from Brian Eno – a record that's maybe more stark than some of his other work of the past few decades – but in a way that's no surprise, given that the music is for a film about the brilliant minimalist designer Dieter Rams! There are sounds here that recall some of Eno's late 70s collaborations with Cluster, while others have more of the organic, acoustic qualities of his own ambient work – and the pairing of two thoughtful geniuses for one project is a perfect match. Titles include "For A New Design", "Generative Lounge", "Designer Piano", "A Warm Sweet Bed", "Beautiful Metals", "Bright Clouds Of Metal", and "Harmonic Guitar". CD

Brian Eno & John CaleWrong Way Up ... CD
Opal/Warner, 1990. Used ... $8.99
A surprisingly strong record from an equally surprising duo – both artists who had given the world some real moments of genius in the 70s, then maybe lost their way a bit in the following decade – only to strip things back to a basic appeal here! For Eno, the record is a real return to song-based forms – something he'd really lost during so many of his ambient projects – and for Cale, the record is maybe a bit more focused, with just the right sort of energy to bring his often-strong songwriting back to the fold – as both artists open up with their best instrumental flexibility, and share their strong studio skills too. Titles include "In The Backroom", "Empty Frame", "Spinning Away", "Been There Done That", "Crime In The Desert", "The River", "Cordoba", "Footsteps", "One Word", and "Lay My Love". CD

IasosRealms Of Light ... LP
Fact Of Being, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
An instrumental record with a very special promise – one that it "will tend to induce a three dimensional picture or hologram in your mind"! There's a few key conditions – you've got to close your eyes, use headphones, and focus on the music – but that last part is very easy to do, given that the enigmatic Iasos always serves up a very unique blend of electric elements, in very meditative modes! The tracks her vary in length, but work together to paint a lovely little picture in sound – that early pre-new age underground mode that Iasos and a few other American artists were helping forge – on titles that include "The Diamond Heart Center Of Creation", "Waltz Of The Swaying Hearts", "The Fountain Of Creation", "The Gates Of Opal", and "The Temples Of Olympus At Dawn". VariousHorse Meat Disco 4 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
No horsing around here – as the set may well be the most compelling so far in this mighty hip series – a wicked blend of underground club from the post-disco and post-punk generation! The tracks here definitely push towards the more obscure side of the spectrum, and really show the way that American and European funky modes were mixing together at the start of the 80s – simmering in seminal scenes on both sides of the Atlantic, and coming across with a wickedly fresh approach to funk and disco! The set features a few contemporary cuts that draw deeply from this key musical moment, but most are of older vintage – and titles include "Misaluba" by KSB, "Don't Stop" by Ish, "Ain't No Way (special club mix)" by Opal, "Stop" by Valery Allington, "Get On Down" by King Sporty & The Roots Rockers, "I Love Your Beat" by Rena, "Get Ready For The Future" by Winners, "Let's Make Love Tonight" by L'Amour feat Krystal, "Some Love" by Laura Taylor, "Barah (sampled version)" by Cleavage, and "Bee Sting" by Camouflage. 2CD set features one extended CD mix, and one disc of unmixed tracks! Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from a series that never gets old – and which, if anything, seems to keep digging deeper and deeper with each new volume! If you know that, as the Louvin Brothers tell us, Satan Is Real – then you'll find plenty to spook your soul here – and we don't just mean the creepy cover! As with previous volumes, the tracks are a superbly-selected batch of songs from the farther reaches of country music – dealing with themes of temptation and salvation, awash with all the evils of mankind that weren't washed away in the pulpit! Titles include "Satan's Wife" by Jesse Floyd, "Turn Your Radio On" by The Statemen Quartet, "It's Nothing To Me" by Loy Clingman, "The Devil" by Ronnie Wolfe, "Satan's Suitcase" by Robert Zehm, "Devil Get Away From Me": by Roy & Georgia & The So & Sos, "Nightmare" by Jack Turner, Ghost Of A Honky Tonk Slave" by Cowbowy Howard Vokes, "On The Cross" by Margie Singleton, "Ghost Town" by Billy Massey, "Singing Shouting Praying" by Bill & Opal Carter with The Country Gents, "Fourth Man" by Reverend Tully McCoy, and "Please Devil" by Bobby Griggs. Ennio MorriconeLa Cugina (180 gram colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
GDM/Overdrive (Italy), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A fantastic score from Ennio Morricone – one of those extra-special soundtracks of his that really seem to elevate from the rest – with a sublime blend of elements that's completely unique! The sound here is in the best Mondo Morricone mode – often slowly stepping, kind of a loungey approach to funk – with isolated strings, moody instrumentation, and some great highlights that include work by Oscar Valdambrini on flugelhorn, Edda Dell'Orso on voice, and I Cantori Moderni on wordless vocals! The sound is beautiful and spooky at the same time – post-bossa, with that more sophisticated sound that Morricone built up as the 70s moved in. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "La Cugina", "La Sera La Nott, Il Giorgno", and "De Copalamo". LP, Vinyl record album

Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $20.99
Raw soul, heavy R&B, and some rare early rockers – all brought together here with the kind of cool classic intensity we've come to love from the Stag O Lee label! The set's the 7th in their series devoted to the Buzzsaw Joint club in London – and like the rest, it has DJs on the scene pull together some of their favorite gems – which, in this case, makes for a nice batch of 16 rare singles that include "Look At Your Girl" by Googie Rene, "Shout Mama Linda" by The Cymbals, "Don't You Know I Care" by The Sevilles, "Sweeney's Twist" by Billy Martin & His Corvairs, "Q Bop She Bop" by The Dells, "Hop Skip & Jump" by The Opals, "Twistin" by Les Cooper & His Soul Rockers, "Fat Man Twist" by The Royal Dukes, "Pretty Woman" by Curtis Byrd, "Dance On Little Girl" by Dee Clark, and "Twist Off" by an Uncredited Artist. VariousUzelli Elektro Saz – 1976 to 1984 ... CD
Uzelli, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $15.99 17.98
Amazing sounds from the Uzelli label – a collection of tunes that are heavy on the elektro saz, which is pictured on the cover – kind of a hybrid between an electric guitar and more traditional stringed instrument! The saz allowed a huge explosion of the kind of sounds that were first coming into play in Arabesk rock at the start of the 70s – taken even further by recordings like these – which move between folksy rhythms and more mainstream modes, but which always sparkle with these angular fuzzy lines from the lead electric instrument! If you've ever dug any of the psychedelic Turkish recordings in our racks, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Yaz Dostrum" by Gulcan Opel, "Nar Taneshi" by Mehtap Tuna, "Darildim Darildim" by Akbaba Ikilisi, "Gonul Dagi" by Mehtap Tuna, "Mercanlar" by Sultan Sumbul, "Asrin Bozuk Duzeni" by Asik Emrah, "Sari Yildiz" by Kina Gecesi Ensemble, and "Topal" by Sari Zeki. Honest Jons (UK), New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A collection of tracks that amount to some of incredibly deep audio archaeology – a wonderful, consciousness wakening collection of globe spanning 78s from the first half of the 20th Century – all from the darkest corners of the EMI Vaults! Honest Jons does an impressive job of collecting recordings that are first and foremost exciting pieces of music – and they reportedly spent a couple of years going through thousands and thousands of 78s and to put this thing together. It was worth the effort! The album includes recordings from China in the 10s, Bali and London in the 20s, Constantinople, Kenya and Spain in the 30s, Uganda & Trinidad in the 50s, and much more from each decade in many parts of the world. Cuban rumbas, Middle Eastern & African string tunes, more pop oriented British tunes, vocal and pop with a global focus. Wonderful stuff! Titles include "The English Sound Table" by GU Hsu, "Lagu Kebiar" by Gamelan Gong, "Rumba Negra" by Sacasas, "Laughing" by Vemngopal Chari, "Different Kind Of Motor Car Noises" by Vengopal Chari, "The Queen's Canary" by Mighty Sparrow and more. ✨✧ Jeff TweedyLove Is The King ... CD
dBpm, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A welcome return to stripped-down, heart-on-sleeve songcraft for Jeff Tweedy – a mode that fans are lucky to see on Jeff's solo tours, but don't get on record all that often at this stage of his career, where he's more likely to follow Wilco's more freewheelingly creative muse. He does a great job of reminding us here that he's still connected to his rural roots, without this really feeling like a throwback to later Uncle Tupelo or earlier Wilco at all – on batch of songs that are acoustic guitar and easygoing vocals forward. Includes the title track, "Opaline", "A Robin Or A Wren", "Gwendolyn", "Bad Day Lately", "Even I Can See", "Natural Disaster", "Save It For Me", "Guess Again", "Troubled" and "Half-Asleep". CD
