✨✧ Pacific Gas & ElectricGet It On – The Kent Records Sessions (Get It On plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Big Beat/Bright Orange (UK), 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The very first album from Pacific Gas & Electric – the hard-wailing west coast group who later recorded more famously for Columbia Records, but who are completely on fire here! The set was done for the Bright Orange subsidiary of Kent Records – that LA imprint who did such a great job with blues, soul, and R&B in the 50s and 60s – and who really let the group here stay close to their blues inspirations, while also letting their freak flag fly with some very cool Cali elements too! As with so many of the other groups of their time who maybe started out in blues, PG&E are quickly moving into territory that's all their own – taking off with psychedelic elements and strongly soulful touches – served up with some great lead guitar work from Glenn Schwartz, some heavy fuzz bass by Brent Block, and raw vocals from Charlie Allen. Tracks include a great remake of the Bobby Blue Bland Tune "Cry Cry Cry" – plus"Wade In The Water", "The Motor City Is Burning", "The Hunger", "Long Handled Shovel", "Jelly Jelly", "Stormy Times", and "Live Love". Includes a slew of alternate takes and otherwise previously unreleased bonus material: "My Sweet Baby" (take 6), "Dirty Mistreater" (take 2), "Cry Cry Cry" (take 2), "Bluse Chant" (take 2) and more. 17 tracks in all! ✨✧ VariousLiberation Music – Spiritual Jazz & The Art Of Protest On Flying Dutchman Records 1969 to 1974 ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Spiritual soul and spoken word with instrumental inflections – a perfect illustration of the righteous sound of the Flying Dutchman label at the start of the 70s! The imprint was famously home to Gil Scott Heron, Lonnie Liston Smith, Leon Thomas, and other hip cats at the time – but also recorded a fair bit of work that was even more progressive and political – including key records from forces helping to carry the legacy of Civil Rights well into the 70s! This package offers up a perfect blend of those modes – great jazz tracks that carry the legacy of John Coltrane forth even further, and political records that were often more powerful than anything in the press at the time. Titles include "Sais" by Lonnie Liston Smith", "Nevertite" by The Esoteric Circle, "The Creator Has A Master Plan" by Louis Armstrong and Leon Thomas, "Lament For John Coltrane" by Bob Thiele Emergency, "Friends & Neighbors" by Ornette Coleman, "Sit Down" by Carl B Stokes with Oliver Nelson, "Echoes" by Leon Thomas, "The Giant Is Awakened"b y Horace Tapscot, "Gonna Get Some Right Now" by Chico Hamilton", and "We're Threatening The Oppressors" by Angela Davis. Jazzman (UK), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Greasy Mike's given us plenty of great collections of rare 45s over the years – but our favorites are his Halloween sets – filled with all these really weird and wild monster-themed 7" singles from back in the day! The sounds here are like walking in on some late night horror show way down on the UHF side of the TV dial back in the day – these little two and three minute mini-movies that burst forth with so much sonic energy, it's almost like you're seeing them on the screen! This set features 18 monsters in all – and tracks include "Cool Ghoul" by Moe Koffman, "Like Weird" by Tommy Falcone & The Centuries, "Witchcraft" by Dick Dewayne Combo, "The Howl" by Johnny Eager, "El Vampiro" by Los Vampiranos, "The Last Ride" by The Phantom, "House On Haunted Hill" by Kenny & The Fiends, "The Spook" by The Tomkos, "Weird One" by Dave Gray & The Graytones, "Rigor Mortis" by The Bluenotes, "Creepin" by The Plaids, and "Transylvania" by The Mysterions. ✨✧ Ann PeeblesHandwriting Is On The Wall ... LP
Hi Records, 1978. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A bit late in the classic Hi years, but Ann's still going strong – in a smooth southern style that recalls the best 70s work by singers like Millie Jackson or Shirley Brown. In fact, Ann takes a hit at the "Shirley/Barbara" answer song cycle that kept going on after Shirley's "Woman To Woman" – and throws her own version of "You've Got The Papers (I've Got The Man)" into the ring as proof! The rest of the record is in a similar man-leaving, man-stealing vein – and titles include "Bip Bam Thank You Mam", "Old Man With Young Ideas", "Livin In, Lovin Out", "Handwriting Is On The Wall", and "I Didn't Take Your Man". DR HookerTruth ... LP
On Records/Numero, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.99
A legendary album from the early 70s underground scene – a set that's got DR Hooker on the cover, looking like some Jesus that's walked away from a recording of Godspell – but a set that's got way more to offer than the image on the front! There's definitely a current of darkness to the tunes, but there's also a message of hope as well – a kind of open, honest quality that makes Hooker and his guitar far more charming than you might expect! The record uses some occasional cool sonic touches from time to time – and has a complexity that you might not expect – not larger arrangements, but just a sort of special approach to the music that's neither the folk or hard rock of so many other obscure indie releases from the time. Titles include "Falling Asleep", "Forge Your Own Chains", "This Thing", "Weather Girl", "The Sea", "Fall In Love", and "A Stranger's Smile". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VanessaCity Lips ... CD
On Records/Norske Albumklassikere (Norway), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky fusion with plenty of prog touches – and a 70s classic from this ultra-hip band from Norway! The group's got some really heavyweight performances here – Fender Rhodes, clavinet, moog, and other keyboards from Haakon Graf – plus flute, and both electric and acoustic tenor and soprano sax work from Svend Undseth – who also works with a frequency analyzer too – in a combo that also features other players on additional Fender Rhodes, plus guitar, bass and drums! Yet all these many instruments have a way of coming together without sounding cluttered – as the tunes have just the right sort of space to allow individual elements to stand out and really shine in the spotlight – different flavors from track to track, but a funky vibe all the way through. Titles include "Milky Unit", "Rat & Cat Dance", "Billy Bop & The Jungle Jam", "Candy Dandy & The Fat Rat", and "City Lips". CD

Harold AshbyOn The Sunny Side Of The Street ... CD
Timeless (Holland), 1992. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Harold Ashby's a tremendous tenorist – almost like Von Freeman or Buck Hill, in that he had years of experience before getting a bit of wider experience on records – thanks to albums like this! The set's got Ashby's great raspy tone in perfect formation with a trio led by pianist Horace Parlan – himself experiencing a big new wave of exposure at the time, on some of his other Timeless sessions, which marked a move to spacious, more tradition-filled playing – which makes him a great partner for Ashby on this set! The rest of the group features Wayne Dockery on bass and Steve McRaven on drums – and although the tracks are short, Ashby delivers volumes in a very small space – on titles that include "Out Of Nowhere", "Satin Doll", "Talk Of The Town", "Scufflin", "These Foolish Things", and "In My Solitude". Barefoot JerryWatchin TV/You Can't Get Off With Your Shoes On ... CD
Monument/Floating World (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
A pair of excellent records from the sometimes-overlooked Barefoot Jerry – back to back on a single CD! First up is Watchin TV With The Radio On – funky southern rock from Barefoot Jerry – a group who've got all the same guitar chops as some of their contemporaries, but who also really know how to kick things up on the drums – which really gives the music a great groove! There's a nice mix of acoustic, electric, and steel guitar work on the album – plus a bit of keyboards and some nicely kicking basslines that also emphasize the funkier currents on the record, especially on some of the instrumentals – all in ways that definitely make Barefoot Jerry one of the most unique groups on their scene! Titles include "Funny Lookin Eyes", "Pig Snoots & Nehi Red", "Hay Queen", "Two Mile Pike", "There Must Be A Better Way", and "Mother Nature's Way Of Saying High". Next up is You Can't Get Off With Your Shoes On – another gem from the group! Barefoot Jerry are one of the great overlooked southern rock groups of the 70s – not as brash and ballsy as some of the arena-filling acts of the period, but equally sharp in terms of their instrumentation – which not only includes great electric guitar lines, but also sweet keyboards, steel guitar, dobro, and even a bit of harmonica! The group know how to groove in a way that sometimes makes them feel like Area Code 615 – and at other times they focus more on tuneful lyrics – trading modes back and forth in ways that make for a mighty rich record overall! Titles include "Ali Babba", "West Side Of Mississippi", "Slowin Down", "Hero Frodo", "Sinkin In The Sea", "Cades Coves", and "The Measure Of Your Worth". CD

✨✧ Rob BowmanSoulsville USA – The Story Of Stax Records ... Book
Schirmer, 1997. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic history of the legendary Memphis soul label – and one that really really goes into depth, and moves past the myths that other authors just linger over. The book is a whopping 390 pages, and is filled with photos, notes, and loads of extremely thorough writing. Bowman moves way past the usual train-spotter type writing that can sometimes weigh down soul books on the market – and he weaves a very compelling story of the label that manages to cover the music, the artists, and the big movers and shakers on the Memphis scene. One of those records that makes Dennis Brown an unsung hero of his generation – an artist who was able to really keep the righteous flame of the 70s burning strong, and at a more down to earth mode than some of the bigger commercial acts at the time – thanks in part to the wonderful production here from Errol Thompson and Joe Gibbs! There's a bit of tightness to the set, but never too much commercial polish – and the tunes open up in a more extended mode that's really great, with all sorts of tweaks, twists, and inflections in Brown's wonderful vocals. Titles include "Let Love In", "Hooligan", "Right Fight", "I Can't Stand It", "Souls Keep Burning", and "Your Love's Gotta Hold On Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Donald ByrdByrd Blows On Beacon Hill (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Transition/Blue Note, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
Beautiful hardbop from Boston – and one of the first-ever albums recorded by trumpeter Donald Byrd as a leader! The set was originally done for the obscure Transition label – also home to inventive early recordings by Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor – and as with those records, there's a very special sort of sound going on here – as the date's a quartet outing, with a very unusual group – with Ray Santisi on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Jim Zitano on bass – all giving Byrd plenty of room to solo in the lead. The record features a very different side than some of Donald's other early two-leader sessions (such as the dates with Pepper Adams) – especially as he blows with a warmth and moodiness that we don't normally hear from him at this point – sounding fantastic on titles that include "Little Rock Getaway", "If I Love Again", "What's New", and "Stella By Starlight". A great Bethlehem Records date from vibes man Teddy Charles – stepping out here in a set that's one of his most openly swinging of the time! The record still has some of the modern currents of Teddy's other work, but also makes great use of Zoot Sims on tenor – really pushing him out front for some bold solos on most numbers – in a great group that also includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Sam Most on flute, and Dave McKenna on piano. There's a bit of audience noise at times, but we can't tell for sure if this is an actual live album – given the clarity of the performances throughout. Titles include "Nigerian Walk", "Rifftide", "Yesterdays", "That Old Black Magic", and "Yale Blue". CD

The album's a nice change from some of Cohn's more tightly arranged records of the 50s – and features his strong tenor right out front – in a group that also features Frank Rehak on trombone, Hank Jones on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums. There's a nice swing and tight solos on the set – which almost has a 50s Bethlehem Records vibe – and Cohn contributes the original tunes "Be Loose", "Good Ol Blues", and "Abstract Of You" – and the rest of the tracks include "We Three", "Idaho", "When Day Is Done", and "Blue Lou". James CottonBuddah Blues – Live & On The Move/High Energy/100% Cotton ... CD
Buddah/Floating World (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99 19.99
Three Buddah Records albums from James Cotton – all served up here in a single set! First up is Live & On The Move – a freewheeling double live set from the great James Cotton – and a record that may well be one of his fiercest of the 70s! James is a monster on both harmonica and guitar right from the very first note – and he's given some really kickass backings from a combo that features some occasional funky drum work from Ken Johnson, plus great lead guitar from Mat Guitar Murphy, and saxophone work from George Gregory. Titles include "One More Mile", "All Walks Of Life", "Boogie Thing", "Teeny Weeny Bit", "Hot N Cold", "Next Time You See Me", "How Can A Fool Go Wrong", "Born In Missouri", and "I Don't Know". On High Energy, there's a very cool New Orleans current – thanks in part to arrangements from Crescent City soul maestro Wardell Quezergue – who creates some great funky moments on the set! Cotton's always been equal parts blues and soul – and the latter really comes to the forefront here, as he blows harmonica and sings with a raspy style that's right in the Nola groove you could hope for – a quality that's emphasized by the production from Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint! Some New Orleans players are in the lineup, but the great Mat Murphy's still backing James on guitar – on cuts that include "Hot N Cold", "Chicken Heads", "Keep Cooking Mama", "Fannie Mae", "Weather Report", "I Got A Feeling", and "James' Theme". 100% Cotton is one of those key 70s records that helped harpman James Cotton really take the Chicago sound to the masses – a set that's romping, tight, and filled with the kind of soul-drenched arrangements that James always did so well! As with many of his classics, the mighty Mat Guitar Murphy is on board on guitar, and also helping with some of the arrangements too – which helps the group update a few older classics with a sweet electric blues groove – next to great new material by Cotton! Titles include "Burner", "I Don't Know", "Fatuation", "Creeper Creeps Again", "One More Mile", "All Walks Of Life", and "Boogie Thing". CD

Elton Dean Quartet/EDQThey All Be On This Old Road (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Maybe the most striking work we've heard from all the players in the group – and that's really saying a lot, given how many stunning records they gave us back in the 70s! The music here is wonderfully free and improvised, but also has a way of focusing on a specific element too – sometimes the piano pulsations of Keith Tippett, sometimes the very organic bass work of Chris Laurence, or the soulful alto sax work of Elton Dean, or intuitive percussion of Louis Moholo! The qualities are a bit hard to describe in words, but there's a vibe to the set that really shows why key players of the British 70s scene were often so different than their European counterparts – this mix of humanism and instrumental progressivism, sometimes a bit warmer than at other points – but balanced with freer flights of creativity. Titles include "Naima", "Dede Bup Bup", "Overdoing It", "Not Too Much", and "Nancy". CD features in four unissued bonus tracks, the most striking of the bunch – "Edeeupub", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Attic", and "Echoes". CD

Liberty/Ace (UK), Early 1960s. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
Mighty nice material from the earliest years of Jackie DeShannon – a full unreleased album for Liberty, plus a bunch of other rare tracks too! The album is fascinating – as it's a tribute to Ray Charles, and has Jackie not singing her own songs, as she would do famously later – but instead taking on tunes from the Ray Charles songbook, especially heavy on the Atlantic years – which come across with this soulful style that's really a change for Jackie! And sure, she's always had a current of soul in her music – but here, she has raspy vocals on a number of cuts, almost echoing Etta James – and great arrangements that really fit the vibe. Ray Charles titles include "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Georgia On My Mind", "I'll Drown In My Own Tears", "Ain't That Love", "Hallelujah I Love Him So", and "What'd I Say". The bonus material is also heavy on soulful styles too – in part because a number of them were recorded with great R&B producer Clyde Otis – and the set features a total of 24 tracks, with other titles that include "Wishin Won't Get It", "I Must Be Dreaming", "Shed A Tear", "Don't You Feel Sorry For Me", "Gonna Search", and "Nothing Can Stop Me". Sweetly crackling soul from Kenny Doss – and one of a number of later non-Hi Records productions by Willie Mitchell for Bearsville! Kenny's style here is uncannily in the Al Green mode – warm and personal, with lots of inflections that are clearly borrowed from Al's classic work, and encouraged by Mitchell's full yet soft production mode. And if you're not bothered by a copycat set, the record's a nice one – and was done with a Memphis sound that's still very firmly in place at the end of the 70s. Lee FieldsLet's Get A Groove On (with bonus download) ... LP
Desco/Daptone, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.00
A stunning return to form by Lee Fields, one of the 70s' lost funky geniuses – heard here in the initial set that would catapult him back in the spotlight for a whole new generation! The record was issued by Desco Records – the key precursor to Daptone, Soul Fire, and other modern funk imprints – and it's got a sound that feels like was lifted from the vaults of James Brown's People label, circa 1972! Unlike other "funk revival" titles of the 90s (especially those by ex-JBs Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker), this one's got a totally perfect sound, and was produced with a loving adherence to the classic 70ss funk sound that made Lee' early records so great – raw vocals, mixed with equally sharp instrumentation – all put together with help from Bosco Mann, Gabriel Roth, and Philippe Lehman – the latter two of whom had been bootlegging older funk records, but were finally ready to try their hand at something of their own. The instrumentation is a tight batch of drum-heavy, bass-heavy, break-heavy grooves – and Lee's voice is incredibly rich and soulful, approaching near-Godfather-like sensibilities! We love this one to death, and it's probably the most perfectly-formed album that Desco ever issued. FloatersFloat On ... CD
MCA, 1977. Used ... $4.99
Not to be confused with the Floaters first album, this is a pretty tasty batch of tracks from the group's short run on ABC records in the late 70s. The centerpiece of the CD is the title cut – "Float On" – the group's enduring favorite, and a massive track that's presented here in its full long version, running nearly 12 minutes long, and a spacey building number that slips out, grooves around, and slinks in slow dancing way that's forever made it a favorite with the classic slow jam crowd! Other tracks are a mix of similar mellow groovers and a few uptempo numbers – and the CD's 8 tracks include "No Stronger Love", "I Bet You Get The One You Love", "Got To Find A Way", "I Am So Glad I Took My Time", and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". Gene & EuniceGo On Ko Ko Mo ... CD
Combo/Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $5.99 18.99
A wonderfully-done collection of work from Gene & Eunice – a 50s duo who had just a handful of hits, but cut some wonderful work for both the Aladdin and Combo Records label at the time! Gene & Eunice have a male/female style that's a key precursor to the bigger soul duet modes of the 60s – sometimes singing together at once with a nicely-harmonized sound, sometimes answering back and forth in a way that really gives their songs a lot of personality – and which makes them a likely inspiration for later folks like Ike & Tina Turner or Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell! And while this set's titled after their biggest hit – "Ko Ko Mo" – it's also got a range of work that finally shows the full late 50s scope of the pair – early singles for the Combo label, a number of which were never issued back in the day – and another dozen or so tracks recorded for the Aladdin label too – a total of 28 titles that include "You & Me", "This Is My Story", "Hi Diddle Diddle", "I'm So In Love With You", "Ko Ko Mo", "Flim Flam", "I Know A Girl", "Tell Me That You Love Me", "Poco Loco", "I'll Never Forget You", "Send Me Someone", "Only Lovers", "Can We Forget It", and "Move Over Baby". The book is chronological – and follows the birth and growth of Sun from 1952 to 1969, with lots of images along the way – then gives over a huge section on the 70 key recordings from the label – followed by a second chapter of the label that offers up some good insight on the Shelby Singleton years too. The book has a great look that really makes the aesthetic of Sun come alive in a great way – and the whole thing is oversize, hardcover, with 253 pages and images throughout. Book

Staffan Abeleen may not be a household name, but he's got a heck of a great group – and one of the best European combos we've heard from the time! Abeleen's is a pianist, and he's working here with Lars Farnlof on cornet and Bjorn Netz on tenor – and it's clear that the group have taken some cues from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet of the Riverside years – working here in that "soul jazz into modern" style that showed up on a lot of the Cannonball-produced records from the same period – a mode that's still somewhat grounded in a rootsy, rhythm-based sound – but which also breaks out with some incredible tones, colors, and modes – shading in the set with a depth that we never would have expected! Rhythm is from Paul Danielsson on bass and Bosse Skoglund on drums – and titles include "Relax", "Float Downstream", "Fin Sikt Over Havet", "Degage", and "Maybe Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

A really great moment in the career of David Ackles – a set that marks a shift to Columbia Records after his initial gems on Elektra – and one that also marks a shift in style as well – with more complicated arrangements that really move Ackles past the more folk-oriented leanings of his roots, and into this sophisticated style that's maybe somewhere between Van Dyke Parks and Leonard Cohen! As with both, the choice of songs here is wonderful – and the arrangements, which were handled by Ackles himself, bring a shifting palette of strings, horns, and other instruments into play to really open up the offbeat colors and rhythms of the tunes. Hickory/Ace (UK), Early 1960s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
Two great albums from Roy Acuff – both issued on his own Hickory Records label! First up is Once More – great later material from the legendary Roy Acuff – an early country star in the 78rpm era, then a rising power in the publishing scene in Nashville – and here a newly-revived talent who somehow seems even better than before! Acuff always had a vocal style that was somewhat timeless, and it definitely feels that way here – as his aging, maturing qualities seem to bring out even more in the material than before – set up in lean backings that also offer up plenty of room for his trademark work on fiddle. Titles include "Once More", "So Many Times", "Nero Played His Fiddle", "Don't Know Why", "Come On Knock", "Searchin For Happiness", and "I Don't Care". King Of Country Music features a set of famous tunes he penned and recorded early in the recording days of hillbilly music – many of which are updated nicely in this 60s album that Roy issued on his own label! The arrangements are slightly more modern, but never too commercial or adorned – and overall there's still a very stripped-down approach to the cuts, which makes them resonate nicely with the originals, but maybe sound even better with more mature vocals from Roy, and great recording quality. Titles include "Fireball Mail", "Pins & Needles", "The Wreck On The Highway", "Great Speckled Bird", "The Old Age Pension Check", "Unloved & Unclaimed", "The Automobile Of Lief", and "Night Train To Memphis". Like some of their similar contemporaries, who could also be avant at times, and straight at others – Adams and Pullen have no concern with setting themselves in one camp or another – and not only flesh out the spirit of the record with both of those aspects of their playing, but also have some surprisingly bluesy undercurrents at times. Cannonball AdderleyBurnin' In Bordeaux – Live In France 1969 ... CD
Elemental, 1969. New Copy 2CDs ... $22.99 24.99
The hippest side of Cannonball Adderley at the end of the 60s – that loose, soulful vibe he was serving up on some of his coolest records for Capitol at the time – stretched out here over some very long tracks recorded live in France! The year alone marks the record as a great one – as Cannon in 1969 could do no wrong – and he's working here with his crack quintet that includes Nat Adderley on cornet, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums – plus the mighty Joe Zawinul on both acoustic and electric piano – really finding his groove here, with that incredible sense of chunky rhythm that really seemed to set Cannonball and Nat on fire! There's a much darker edge to the music than on some of Adderley's more popular Capitol albums of the late 60s – a great reminder that in a live setting, this group can bring together all sorts of surprises. Titles include "Why Am I Treated So Bad", "The Scavenger", "Experience In E", "Blue No Boogie", "Walk Tall", "Come Sunday", "Work Song", and "Manha De Carnaval". CD

Mercury (Japan), 1958. Used ... $9.99
A set that's right on target, right from the start – and one that has the young Cannonball Adderley really coming into his groove! The set's a lot more soul jazz-oriented than some of Cannon's records from a few years before – played by a rock-solid group that includes brother Nat Adderley on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – hitting a groove that's got plenty of nascent elements of that Cannonball sound that would virtually take over jazz in the 60s! Yet there's also a nicely different vibe going on here too – a bit less structure, and a looser approach to the mode – spun out with some modern moments too, on titles that include "Straight No Chaser", "Jubilation", "Our Delight", "Fuller Bop Man", and "Stay On It". Elemental, 1969. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A killer combo from saxophonist Cannonball Adderley – a group that features George Duke on both acoustic and electric piano, stretching things out, and helping the Adderley brothers find an even more soulful groove than they had in the 60s! The George Duke approach really makes for a cool concert throughout – with Cannon on alto (and a bit of soprano on one track too!), Nat on cornet, Walter Booker on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums – hitting that more complex, more righteous groove that Adderley was opening up on Fantasy Records in the final years of his life – a bit more spontaneous here, with lots of room for improvisation! The set also has some more spiritual moments than you might expect if you only know Cannon's 60s albums on Capitol – especially at the start of the show, which is very loose and open. Titles include a great version of Nat's "Hummin" – plus side-long takes on "Doctor Honoris Causa" and "Black Messiah" – and the tunes "Walk Tall/The Scene", "Soli Tomba", "Directions", and "Autumn Leaves". The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style on alto sax – also different than the sound of his brother Nat, who was Adderley's more frequent partner on records. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Moserobie (Sweden), 2022. New Copy ... $25.99 29.99
The sound here is wonderful – a combination of elements from players we already love, but in a different way than some of their other records! One of the most distinct elements of the set comes from the work of Per Texas Johansson – who plays a variety of clarinets throughout, and evokes a sense of postwar modernism, especially as he combines with the vibes of Matthias Stahl – which are every bit as delightful here as on other records, yet again nicely different. Ingebrigt Haker Flaten has a lot more space and gentle swing than usual – and we're guessing a lot of credit for the record goes to the work of drummer Konrad Agnas – whose open style on the kit only seems to increase the sense of late 50s modernist experimentation on the record. Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! The album's quite spare, and almost more in a Latin mode at times – given the harder percussion on the set, and the firey recording style given to the set by Montuno – but it also echoes some of the great spare styles that Airto used in his first American recordings, too – the sessions he cut for Cobblestone/Buddah right at the start of the 70s. Airto plays a range of percussion instruments, and Flora's on the set adding in some vocals – and the record also features great keyboards from Jorge Dalto, whose sound really ties thigns together nicely. A stunning celebration of one of the greatest pairings in Brazilian music – and in American music as well, given that both Airto Moreira and Flora Purim recorded plenty of these cuts up in our neck of the woods! Airto's percussion is the stuff of legend – a key force in Brazilian recordings in the late 60s, and then equally important in American jazz – in famous recordings with Miles Davis and other artists, and plenty of great records on his own! Flora's vocals are equally crucial – a soaring, fluid approach that forever changed the way that female singers approached jazz – bred in 60s bossa, but instantly something new by the time the 70s came along – especially when Airto was supporting her with great grooves! This huge package brings together material that both artists recorded – often under the name of one or the other, but often with the other artist present on the recording – with a heavy batch of work from the 70s and 80s, but also crucial cuts from other years too! 3CD set features 37 tracks and a really great package – with titles that include "Love Lock", "The Happy People", "Hungry On Arriva", "The Road Is Hard", "Samba De Flora", "O Canto Da Sereia", "Jeito Bom De Sofrer", "Papo Furado", "Xibaba", "Back Streets Of Havana", "Vera Cruz", "Flora's Song", "When Angels Crie", "Celebration Suite", "Casa Forte", "Black Narcissus", "A Secret From The Sea", "O Cantador/I Just Want To Be Here", "Jump", and "Hot Sand". The percussionist works here as the leader, amidst other players who include Herbie Hancock on piano and keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Chick Corea on keyboards, Gary Meek on tenor and soprano sax, and Hiram Bullock on guitars – all sounding quite spare and spacey at certain points on the record – with a groove that's much more abstract than both their own usual work, and what you might expect from Airto. It's almost as if these heavyweights have decided to loosen things up a bit in the company of Airto – getting a bit more experimental with his percussion to drive them on. Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". A pivotal album for Mose Allison – and one of the first records to ever feature his voice, even if only on one track! During the 50s, Allison was mostly known for his work as a bop-styled pianist – on records by Stan Getz and others – but at the end of the decade, he really returned to his roots, and began to forge a New Orleans-styled approach to jazz that had lots of bluesy inflections and a much earthier sensibility. This album offers a bit of both Allison sides of the fence – some straighter piano jazz with a trio that features Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free on drums, but also some rootsier numbers that come off nicely. An overlooked treasure from the glory days of A&M Records – and a set that's got a richness in sound that you might not guess from the cover! Renee Armand has this airy vocal style that's maybe informed by earlier generations of folk, but which is set here to really lovely larger arrangements by Mike Melvoin – who uses acoustic and electric elements in nicely intertwining ways – almost as if the whole thing's an American take on territory that Joe Boyd was exploring over in the UK! At times, there's almost a folk funk approach to the music, thanks to gentle basslines that work wonderfully with Renee's vocals – and titles include "I Think You're Letting Me Go", "Elizabeth Rain", "Guess I Never Knew You", "Raining In LA", "Falling Ladies", and "Does Anybody Love You". Koch/Atlantic, 1974. Used ... $14.99
A beautiful little record from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – and although performed for a bigger label than some of their previous indie outings, the set may be one of the most dynamic the group ever recorded! Atlantic Records is clearly giving the group a lot of space here – as they're recording in Chicago, in a relatively free setting – able to stretch out and change things up with amazing energy – never just free jazz exploration, but a very rich, complicated, well-considered approach to their many layers of instrumentation and rhythm! Muhal Richard Abrams makes a great guest appearance on the record – adding in some wonderful piano passages – and the set includes the usual mix of reeds, percussion, and vocals – plus the beautiful bass work of Malachi Favors. Tracks include "Nonaah", "The Key", "Tnoona", and "Fanfare For The Warriors". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Message To Our Folks ... CD
BYG/Actuel (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 23.99
One of the key records that helped establish the genius of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago at the end of the 60s – a session that was recorded on the Paris scene, where the early quartet were really starting to rub shoulders with, and influence a range of different European players – maybe no surprise, when you hear the brilliance of an album like this! There's a bit more bite here than on some of the more spacious AEC performances overseas – really bold energy that comes across on the first few minutes of the record, which have this wonderfully righteous quality – augmented by shouts and calls – on tunes that maybe also have a bit more structure than some other material from the period too. The session was recorded at the Saravah studios, and seems to echo some of the criss-crossing experiments of that famous spot – heard on the Ensemble's classic album with Brigitte Fontaine – and the set features a magnificent mish-mash of sounds from Lester Bowie on trumpet, Malachi Favors on bass, both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on a variety of saxes and reeds, and the whole group on percussion! The set features the tracks "Old Time Religion", "Dexterity", "Rock Out", and the side-long "A Brain For The Seine" – which covers the whole second half of the record, and really sets the tone for the group's experiments to come. Dorothy AshbyDorothy's Harp (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cadet/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99
One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! Other titles include Brazilian numbers "Reza" and "Canto De Ossanha" – both of which are transformed in Dorothy's hands – plus "This Girl's In Love", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and "Windmills of Your Mind"! A new chapter in dub from Aswad – a set that points the way towards so many shifts that would take place in the music over the next few years – including the use of digital elements, and the rise of On-U Sound as well – all coming from crucial sounds created here on an Island Records classic! The set was mixed at Fallout Shelter, and has this really heady brew of deep dubby currents with occasional roots-inspired vocals – although those often get pretty abstracted into the mix. Instrumentation includes work from Vin Gordon on trombone, Brinsley Dan on guitar, Tony Gad on bass, and Drummie Zeb on drums – which often get this great splashy sound in the production. Atlantic StarrAlways – The Warner/Reprise Recordings 1987 to 1991 (All In The Name Of Love/We're Movin Up/Love Crazy/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $17.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". Really hard-jamming work from keyboardist Brian Auger – the first of a 2-part live set from the US, and easily some of his greatest work on record! The tracks are all very long and stretched out here – an extrapolation of the territory Auger was already exploring on studio sides, taken into even more cosmic realms through the lively nature of the set. As with other records from the time, Alex Lighterwood sings on some cuts – but the real highlight is the keyboard work of Auger – served up on both organ and electric piano, and hitting a great blend of funk, fusion, and keyboard soul! Titles include a really great funky remake of "Bumpin On Sunset", the original break track "Don't Look Away", and the tunes "Truth", and "Beginning Again". CD

Don't let the pot reference on the cover put you off, or give you the wrong sort of idea about the record – as the whole thing's tight, sharp, and pretty darn groovy – a wicked batch of blue-eyed soul from the Bay Area scene of the mid 70s, served up at a level that's not too far from some of the best work on Fantasy Records at the time! These guys are clearly a rock band, but have drunk up a heady brew of funk and soul – augmented in both the rhythm elements and the nice use of horns, as well as some of the great lead vocals from singer Paulette Collins! The record's a lost one, but definitely continues that great late 60s Bay Area mode of mixing soul and rock together in a very joyous way – on titles that include the funky sample cut "Mess Up Your Mind", plus "You Got Something", "Clap Your Hands", "First Taste Of Love", "Gonna Make It", "Sativa", "Don't You Worry", "Trying To Hold It Down", and "Skyrocket". ✨✧ David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $11.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". Roy AyersFive Classic Albums – Tear To A Smile/Mystic Voyage/Everybody Loves The Sunshine/Vibrations/Lifeline (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Polydor/Robinsongs (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
Five incredible albums from the legendary Roy Ayers – all presented in a single set! First up is Tear To A Smile – one of the best early soul albums by Roy Ayers! Roy's working here with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Edwin Birdsong, William Allen, Harry Whitaker, and other hip players – a perfect crew to forge Roy's unique blend of jazz and soul. This is perhaps the first record to really have Roy stretching out in this mode – moving more fully away from funky jazz, into a ream of vocal tracks that would make him one of the most unique artists of the 70s. This mid 70s period of Roy's career was remarkably fertile, creatively as well as for sheer productivity – and Tears To A Smile is one of them that shows some the most artistic growth, and also a deeper sense of soul! Features righteous cuts like "2000 Black", "Ebony Blaze", "Time & Space", and "A Tear To A Smile" – plus the mellow "Magic Lady", and a great remake of Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way Of The World". Next is Mystic Voyage – an archetypal album by Roy – and one that really shows him at the turning point! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first uptempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. "Mystic Voyage" shows the sweet jazzy side of Roy – as it's a vibes-heavy instrumental with a light stepping groove, perfect for the mellow direction he'd take on other records. The album also features some great off-beat funk numbers that recall earlier albums – including the break-heavy "Spirit Of Doo Doo", plus "Funky Motion" and "The Black Five". Everybody Loves The Sunshine is one of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Vibrations is fantastic – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". Last up is Lifeline – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". Also features bonus tracks – "Evolution (7" mix)", "Domelo (7" mix)", and "Running Away (12" long version)". CD

Albert AylerGoing Home (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 59.99
Pre-ESP Records work from the legendary Albert Ayler – and a really special set that definitely shows his strong ties to a previous legacy of African-American music! Ayler always clamed blues and other roots in his sound, but didn't always show them as clearly – given his free-thinking, forward-moving approach – yet this set has Albert really reworking an older influence, by taking older songs from gospel and secular sources, and using them as a completely compelling springboard for his new ideas on tenor and soprano sax! The album's the sort that David Murray might have cut in the mid 80s – but conceived by Ayler two decades before – and sadly unissued for years after its recording, possibly because it's a very sensitive, soulful set that's different than the frenetic power of later albums on ESP. A real treasure throughout – with work from Call Cobbs Jr on piano, Henry Grimes on bass, and Sonny Murray on drums – on titles that include "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", "Deep River", "Goin Home", "Ol Man River", "Down By The Riverside", and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen". Impulse/Elemental (Spain), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $27.99 33.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". LP, Vinyl record album

The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", "Unknown Song For Mario Telles", "Manha", "Duro De Roer", "Quem Tem Medo", "Juntos Mais Uma Vez", and "Bateria Do Mamao". Harvest/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $18.99 39.99
A trio of great albums from Babe Ruth – plus bonus tracks too! First up is First Base – the debut of a group so great and so groovy, they ended up having a huge influence on the early sound of hip hop – thanks to a wonderfully funky sound at the core of their progressive rock groove! Babe Ruth have this rhythmic impulse that's really amazing – a way of working bass, drums, and percussion together with qualities that go way past just prog rock noodling – and have this focus that really fits the lead vocals and guitar of Alan Shacklock, who also handled all the arrangements for this mighty debut too! Titles include their classic cut "The Mexican" – a famous sample cut from way back, with nice use of acoustic guitar and a Morricone riff too – plus versions of Zappa's "King Kong" and Jesse Winchester's "Black Dog" – and the originals "Wells Fargo", "The Runaways", and "Joker". Next is Amar Caballero, an album with a horse on the cover, and a sound that's maybe even more soulful than the first mighty outing by Babe Ruth – quite a lot, given the strength of that debut! Female singer Jenny Haan seems to have an even greater presence here – working some nice currents of color through the group's great ability to riff, groove, and sometimes step into more acoustic modes – all while holding onto one of the hippest currents going in the Harvest Records scene – and one of the most unique as well! There's plenty of surprises throughout – and in addition to great cuts like "Broken Cloud", "Gimme Some Leg", "We Are Holding On", "Amar Caballo", and "Doctor Love" – the group also turn in a nicely offbeat remake of "Cool Jerk" too! Last up is the self-titled Babe Ruth, a set that really stands as a testament to their many musical influences! There's few groups who could ever hope to wrap together influences from Stax Records, Ennio Morricone, and Curtis Mayfield – and whole the whole thing could ever turn out well – but the mighty Babe Ruth do exactly that, and still find time for some of their own unique grooves as well! The group are every bit as groovy here as on their previous records – mixing fuzzy guitars, well-crafted rhythms, and a nicely compressed version of prog into an amazingly fresh sound that still delights all these many years later – thanks to well-crafted vocals from Jenny Haan, and sharp arrangements from Alan Shacklock, whose guitars and sense of wit really keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Shacklock penned most of the original tunes here – like "Dancer", "Somebody's Nobody", "Jack O'Lantern", and "The Dutchess Of Orleans" – and the group also turn in nice remakes of "Fistful Of Dollars", "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue", and "Private Number". 3CD set features bonus tracks – "Wells Fargo (single)", "Theme From A Few Dollars More", "Ain't That Livin", "If Heaven's On Beauty's Side", and "Private Number (single)" – plus a big booklet of notes. The overlooked legacy of Bachdenkel – maybe not the biggest name on the British scene at the start of the 70s, but a group who were initially signed to Philips, and made some really fantastic music at the time! The group are a trio, and it's a bit hard to sum up the quality of the work in easy words – as it's sometimes very personal, but not folksy at all – other times a bit more instrumentally intense, yet not really prog either – always somewhat dark overall, and never trying at all for an easy hook or the kind of track that might have gotten them any sort of radio play at all. The initial album on the set is Lemmings, a moody masterpiece that Philips only issued in France, but which is a stunning piece of work – and the second record, Stalingrad, got even less circulation at the time, but is equally powerful too. The 3CD set features both those records, plus lots of bonus tracks added to each – and a full bonus CD of material from 1967 through the 70s – 22 more tracks that really fill in the space between the main records, as does the very detailed notes that come with the package. 50 tracks in all – and long overdue! The music is lean and stripped-down – hip hop-influenced soul, but almost at a level that has Badu playing with more popular modes of the time – showing that she can do them better than most, but always with this sense of sophistication that draws on all the other sounds she's given us over the years! A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics, but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than most who that followed her lead post-Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth tones, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) ✨✧ Chet BakerBlood Chet & Tears ... LP
Verve, 1970. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of the most unusual albums in the career of trumpet legend Chet Baker – done at a time when he was definitely going through some changes in his life, which also led to some changes in his music too! This set's not unlike a similar date that Stan Getz did for Verve around the same time – larger backings, and tunes that include some contemporary hits that are redone as jazz vehicles – arranged by Jerry Styner, and featuring instrumentation from some key members of The Wrecking Crew! Chet sings a bit – and the richness of the arrangements really push his vocals on those numbers – and honestly, his trumpet has maybe more punch than usual too – almost as if he'd been listening to some of the Hugh Masekela records on Uni, and said "hey, I've got to get my horn out there too!" There's a great mix of melancholy and joy on the record – the former especially in the set's beautiful version of "Come Saturday Morning" – next to other tunes that include "And When I Die", "Evil Ways", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Something", "Spinning Wheel", and "Vehicle". LP, Vinyl record album

Chet BakerChet Baker & His Quintet With Bobby Jaspar ... LP
Barclay (France), 1956. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A set that's got Chet Baker Quintet on the cover, but which features the American trumpeter in a range of different settings – all brought together as his final album for the Barclay label in Paris! The set does feature a quintet on some tracks – with tenor work from either Bobby Jaspar or Jean-Louis Chautemps, depending on the tunes – both players who would really awaken new sonic sensibilities that Baker would explore with other tenorist in coming years – such as the great Phil Urso! There's also some quartet passages, and octet work that shows a wonderful ear for the overall sound of the group – and other players on the set include Benny Vasseur on trombone on the octet tracks, and a range of different pianists, including Rayond Fol, Rene Utreger, and Francy Boland. Titles include "Vline", "Exitus", "Chet", "Cheeketah", "Dinah", "Tasty Pudding", and "Anticipated Blues" – much more unsual material than some of Baker's other overseas sessions of the time! LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent 180 gram Sam Records reissue in a flip-back cover, still in the stickered outer sleeve, appears to have never been opened.)

Chet BakerChet Baker With Strings – Heartbreak ... CD
Timeless (Netherlands), 1991. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Late Chet Baker in a really wonderful setting – working with a hip quartet at the core, but also getting strong support from larger strings arranged by Michel Hardy – a great talent who really updates the vintage "with strings" jazz mode pioneered by Verve in the 50s! Chet sings a bit on the record, maybe more in proportion to some of his other records of the period – and on the longer tracks he gets in some great trumpet solos too – with support from either Harold Danko or Michel Grallier on piano, John Burr or Ricardo Del Fra on bass, and Ben Riley or John Engles on drums. Tracks include "All Of You", "Blue Moon", "My Funny Valentine", "Angel Eyes", "As Time Goes By", and "Round Midnight". CD

Chet BakerIt Could Happen To You – Chet Baker Sings ... CD
Riverside/Universal (Japan), 1958. Used ... $16.99
One of Chet Baker's most classic albums of the 50s – a record that features both vocals and strong trumpet solos – all from a time when Baker was one of the hottest things going in jazz! The album's different from records from previous years, in that it moves Baker from LA to New York – where he works with a great quartet that features Kenny Drew on piano, George Morrow or Sam Jones on bass, and Philly Joe Jones or Danny Richmond on drums – all players who have a slightly different approach than some of Baker's compatriots on Pacific Jazz sessions, which also seems to bring out a bit more bite in Chet too. Tracks are still shortish, with those breathy Baker vocals we love so much, balanced with really well-crafted trumpet solos – and titles include "It Could Happen To You", "Do It The Hard Way", "Old Devil Moon", "Dancing On The Ceiling", and "The More I See You". CD features 2 bonus tracks! CD

Chet BakerMemories – Chet Baker Live In Tokyo ... CD
King (Japan), 1987. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99 About February 1, 2025 (delayed)
A set recorded in Tokyo, but one that has the great Chet Baker working with players from the Dutch and American scenes – all coming together in a quartet session that's maybe one of the strongest records from Chet's later years! The material was recorded live – and Chet's got a surprisingly strong bite on his horn at times – very different than the wispier modes of European sessions from earlier in the decade – perhaps in part because of the superb rhythmic accompaniment he gets from Harold Danko on piano, Hein Van De Geyn on bass, and John Engels on drums! And as with all these late recordings, the shift in Chet's style is wonderful – even at times when he was "lost" to so many, he's still a master of phrasing – coming up with all these new modes of expression that are so different than his classic work – on long tracks that stretch out beautifully. Titles include "Arborway", "Broken Wing", "Four", "I'm A Fool To Want You", and "Seven Steps To Heaven". CD

Chet Baker/Jim Hall/Hubert LawsStudio Trieste ... CD
CTI/King (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99 About March 12, 2025
A great later date from CTI – proof that the label still had its magic going on well into the 80s! The session's a larger group effort headed up by Don Sebesky, and featuring key solos by Chet Baker, Jim Hall, and Hubert Laws – all of whom get plenty of room to do their thing on the album's longer tracks! Other players include Kenny Barron, Jack Wilkins, Jorge Dalto, George Mraz, and Steve Gadd – plus bit of added percussion – and although the group is large, the overall sound is relatively lean – spacious and airy, in keeping with Baker's best moments on records like these, and always sensitive enough to let Hall's gentle work on the strings of his guitar shine through nicely! Titles include "Malaguena", "Django", "Swan Lake", and "All Blues". CD

Duck BakerBreakdown Lane – Free Solos & Duos 1976 to 1988 ... CD
ESP, Late 1970s/1980s/Early 1990s. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Almost twenty years' worth of never-issued recordings from the great guitarist Duck Baker – an acoustic player who can occasionally work in territory more tied to the Takoma Records and Kicking Mule scene, but one who's also a hell of an improvising jazz artist – maybe America's answer to the work of Fred Frith and Derek Bailey during the 70s! This set brings together a whole host of improvisations recorded by Baker on acoustic guitar – some live, some studio, and two with help from Eugene Chadbourne – although we'll be honest in saying that we prefer the solo material here more, as it's really got that special sort of balance that's always made Baker so unique! The package features 16 tracks in all – and titles include "Buffalo Fire", "No Family Planning", "Eusebia's Lament", "47 East Houston Street", "Like Flies", "Klee", "Breakdown Lane", "Sonadem Sol", and "Take The A Train". Gato BarbieriImpulse Story ... CD
Impulse, Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
We love this music – and it's some of our favorite ever on Impulse Records! Gato Barbieri's a musician that's worked in many styles over the years, but during his brief mid 70s run on Impulse, he cut some tremendous records that blended Latin modes of his South American roots with some of the freer jazz he started working in during the 60s! And although Impulse was often a place where players cut some of their most "out" material, the Gato heard here is nicely more inside from his album on ESP or his Blue Note sides with Don Cherry – and is instead blowing in a really soulful style that's easily as great as Pharoah Sanders, and given strong direction by the percussion and added instrumentation used on his 4 records for the label. CD features 10 tracks that include "Nunca Mas", "India", "Encontros", "Latino America", "Gato Gato", "Cuando Vuelva A Tu Lado", "Viva Emiliano Zapata", and "El Sublime". CD
(Out of print. Sealed with hype sticker.)

Gato BarbieriUnder Fire ... CD
RCA/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
An excellent set from the great Gato Barbieri – one of the gems from his earlier years on record, and an album that's very much in the best spirit of his sides for Impulse in the early 70s! There' definitely some Latin currents in the rhythm – not as strongly stated as on his Latin America series for that other label, but still there in the conception – and Gato blows with that sharp, soulful, spiritual tone that we love so much from this period – so different than the later sound of his smoother records. Lonnie Liston Smith is on piano in the group – getting pretty outside at times, as on his work with Pharoah Sanders – and the combo also features lots of great percussion from Airto and Mtume, too. All tracks are nice and long, and very searching – and titles include "El Parana", "Antonico", "El Sertao", and "Maria Domingas". CD

Pastor TL Barrett & Youth For Christ ChoirI Shall Wear A Crown (Like A Ship/Do Not Pass Me By Vols 1 & 2/I Found The Answer/Singles & Sermons) (5CD box set) ... CD
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $35.99 41.99
A tremendous package of work from this overlooked soul and gospel legend – four classic albums, plus other rare material too – all packaged with detailed notes in the wonderful Numero Group style! First up is Like A Ship Without A Sail – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too – and the music is filled with raw drums, heavy bass, and lots of great organ lines! Next is Do Not Pass Me By Vol 1 – an album that's got a nice balance between intimate soul numbers and larger tracks that have the whole Mount Zion Baptist Church along for support! The set's definitely got the strongly soulful vibe of Barrett's Like A Ship album – a strong ear for the best secular elements of the time, which are used liberally in the instrumental backing – to really send home the message in the music! Most tunes really soft-pedal the religion, and instead go for an overall feel that really crosses over to regular soul music. Next is the great second volume of Do Not Pass Me By – like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. I Found The Answer is one of the biggest-circulating albums from this fantastic figure in Chicago gospel – a unique set done for the Gospel Truth subsidiary of Stax Records, but a set served up in the same blend of soul-based inspirations as some of TL Barrett's indie label releases back home in the Windy City! Plus, the package features a full album of Singles & Sermons – rare non-LP material by this seminal figure in both soul and spiritual music. CD

Kenny BarronBook Of Intuition ... CD
Impulse, 2016. Used ... Just Sold Out!
There's never been another pianist like Kenny Barron – and after all these years, he's still one of the few players who can grab our ears right away with each new album – and remind us again why each of his records seems so essential! Barron comes on strong and soulfully right from the start here – bursting with lyrical energy and life, but also hitting an inherently rhythmic vibe too – that sort of special pulse that seems to always flow through his music – and which, if anything, has only gotten stronger as the years go by! The trio here is a well-matched lineup with Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums – both players, especially Kitagawa, who know how to dip and move with Barron's notes in a wonderful way. Titles include Kenny Barron originals "Prayer", "Lunacy", "Dreams", "Bud Like", "Cook's Bay", and "Magic Dance". CD

A tremendous tribute to the tenor talents of Paul Bascomb – pulled together here from rare 78rpm sides for United Records – including more than a few that were never issued at the time! Bascomb's got a rich and soulful tone – easily one of the best of the postwar generation, even though Paul never got the same sort of due as tenorists on big labels like King, Chess, or Savoy! The set features most of the same players on all tracks – Bascomb on tenor, Eddie Lewis on trumpet, Frank Porter and Tommy Waters on alto, and Duke Jordan on piano – and Porter sings on a few tracks too. Titles include "Mumbles Blues", "Blues & The Beat", "Black Out", "Nona", "Love's An Old Story", "Liza's Blues", and "Soul & Body". CD

Count BasieCount Basie Story (2LP Box Set) ... LP
Roulette, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... $9.99
Count Basie rewrites history – updating his older work for the Roulette Records years, in this hip collection that features lots of new arrangements from Frank Foster – and rich performances from his great group at the time! The recordings are all new, as are the conceptions of the tunes – so there seems to be even more syncopated swing in the rhythms than on any of the older takes on the material – that fresh sound that the group grew into with Neal Hefti – still going strong here in Foster's hands. So although the tunes are Basie classics – and classics from other bands of the 30s and 40s – the performances and solos are plenty fresh! Titles include "Swinging The Blues", "Out The Window", "Texas Shuffle", "Down For Double", "Lester Leaps In", "Topsy", "Taps Miller", "Shorty George", "Jive At Five", and "Dogging Around".
