✨✧ OdysseyI Got The Melody ... LP
RCA, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Odyssey certainly does have the melody – and that's always been one of the factors that's made them stand out from the rest! Even though the group worked largely in a territory that had a strong dancefloor feel, they always put enough work into their vocals and overall tunes to make for work that was always a cut above. The melody reigns supreme on this set – pushing tunes with an extra level of catchiness that really helps them groove! Includes the tracks "Baby That's All I Want", "I Got The Melody", "Hold On To Love", "It Will Be Alright", "I Can't Keep Holding Back My Love", and "Roots Suite", a nice set of tracks based around Lamont Dozier's "Going Back To My Roots". ✨✧ OdysseySetting Forth ... LP
Lion, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pretty fuzzy stuff – and a great bit of rare psyche from this hard-working group of the New York scene at the end of the 60s! Odyssey have a sound that still carries elements of a few years before – swirling organ lines, garagey guitars, and up-front vocals that sometimes have a slightly soulful quality – but they also open up a fair bit more in their music, kicking things hard with some really fierce drums at the bottom, and jamming in a nicely skanky sort of mode on some of the best numbers! There's a great gritty sound going on here – one that befits the album's original release as a tiny 100 copy run in plain cardboard covers – but the music's also surprisingly mature, too, and the record really rivals better-known psyche gems on Capitol or Epic from the time. Titles include "Tied By A Rope", "Angel Dust", "Sally", "Church Yard", "You're Not There", and "Got To Feel It". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A sweet sweet groove from Odyssey – tripping along in a snapping 80s beat supported by some "wheeet" keyboard work! The hook is very tasty – sung along by the group with a really nice little swing that makes the tune more playfully soulful than you'd guess at first! "Love's Alright" is great too – a stepping little groover with a warm bubbling groove that never lets you go! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Terje RypdalOdyssey ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
A great setting for the spacey tones of Terje Rypdal's guitar – a double-length set for ECM that lets Terje stretch out in very spacious splendor! The album features a fair bit of very long tracks, plus a few shorter ones – and Rypdal's working here on string ensemble and soprano sax, plus his usual guitar – with a quintet that includes trombone, organ, bass, and drums. As with many ECM albums of the time, the actual roles of the instruments shift up nicely from traditional modes – especially on the longer, more exploratory tracks. Titles include "Midnite", "Darkness Falls", "Adagio", "Better Off Without You", "Fare Well", and "Over Birkerot". LP, Vinyl record album

Robb ScottAfro Odyssey ... CD
Sunshine Enterprises (Germany), 2006. Used ... $9.99
A definite Afro Odyssey from Robb Scott – a set served up in an array of criss-crossing rhythms and contemporary soul! The style here is slightly cosmic – a bit like recent work coming out of London – but there's also a warmer, earthier spirit at play here too – one that really keeps the album far from cliche, and which makes tremendous use of the shifting instrumental patterns from track to track. Robb's at the core on vocals and keyboards, but the record also features added vocals, percussion, and orchestrations – the last of which are used subtly, but fully, in order to give the tunes a real sense of presence and power. The album's one of the best of this type we've heard in a long long time – and it's filled with great tracks that include "Understanding", "Afro Odyssey", "Fallin", "Revolution", "The Idiot King", "Distortions", "Return To The Earth", "Four Hundred Years In The Making", and "Anything You Like". Evolution, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
An excellent bit of exotica! The record was recorded in South Africa, and issued here in the US by Evolution – and it features a combination of animal sound effects with tight jazzy and funky grooving in a 60s swinging mode! Instrumentation includes electric harpsichord, vibes, clavinette, guitar, sax, bongos, and flute – and the feel of the tracks is just like a vintage Italian soundtrack from the same time, save for all the growls of the animals that creep into the mix! Titles include "Hyena Hippies", "Monkey Puzzle", "Z For Zebra", "Elephant Drums", "Impala Pirouette", and "Warthog Hollow". LP, Vinyl record album

James Blood UlmerOdyssey ... CD
CBS/Sony, 1983. Used ... $9.99
One of our favorite Ulmer records, probably because there's a nice groove running underneath most of the numbers, in a sort of post-Prime Time 80s out-funk sort of way. It never drops into a flat out back beat, but there's always some sense of time, while Ulmer's guitar and Charles Burnham's violin venture to and fro. The group is just a trio, and there's not too much of Blood's vocalizing going on on the eight pieces, which include "Little Red House", "Are you Glad To Be In America", "Election" and "Odyssey". CD

✨✧ Monk MontgomeryBass Odyssey ... LP
Chisa, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Monk Montgomery was one of the first jazz musicians to use the electric bass heavily, and you can hear the sheer power of his playing on this tight session recorded in LA with Crusaders members like Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson, and Stix Hooper. The album's got that groovy soul jazz 60's sound that characterized the best releases on Chisa, and Monk's bass is right out front in the mix, pounding heavily over the top of groovy drums and nice electric keyboards. Tracks include the two part fuzzy "Fuselage", plus "Foxy Gypsy", "Journey To the Bottom" and "Sister Lena", which has some nice hard drums. LP, Vinyl record album

ECM (Germany), 1975/1976. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two albums from guitarist Terje Rypdal – packaged together in a single set! The first 2CDs comprise the landmark Odyssey album – a great setting for the spacey tones of Terje Rypdal's guitar – a double-length set for ECM that lets Terje stretch out in very spacious splendor! The third CD is maybe even more unique – titled Unfinished Highballs, and featuring previously unreleased live material – recorded in 1976 by Swedish Radio – and featuring a group with Terje on guitars and Brynjulf Blix on keyboards – working with larger backings conducted by Rypdal and George Riedel! There's a sense of power here that you don't always here on other Terje albums of the time – and the punch of the sound hardly feels "unfinished" at all. Titles include "Dawn", "The Golden Eye", "Bright Lights Big City", "Talking Back", and "Dine & Dance To The Music Of The Waves". CD

✨✧ Wayne ShorterOdyssey Of Iska ... LP
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very unusual album for Wayne Shorter – recorded right around that 1970 point when Duke Pearson was exploring formats for Blue Note artists that included larger, often electric arrangements, pointing the way towards some of the later 70s soul jazz work on labels like Kudu or CTI! This set, produced by Pearson, features Shorter as the main soloist on tenor and soprano sax – in a very hip group that includes Dave Friedman on vibes, Gene Bertoncini on guitar, Ron Carter and Cecil McBee on bass, and both Billy Hart and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. Tracks are long and complicated, with searching soulful arrangements that are part post-Miles fusion, part early 70s indie soul jazz – but balanced nicely without any sense of overindulgence at all. Shorter's soprano work is very nice, and much more angular than his playing on tenor – and titles include "Wind", "Joy", "Storm", and "Calm". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Al Casey/Billy Butler/Jackie WilliamsGuitar Odyssey ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album of jazz guitar – one that features two masters from an earlier era, both recorded in the 70s in a really stripped-down setting! The group just features the drums of Jackie Williams with the guitars of Al Casey and Billy Butler – both players who have a highly rhythmic style in their music, which they draw from strongly throughout – as one guitarist will solo while the other will provide more of a rhythmic pulse – and Butler does an especially nice job of changing up his guitar "voice" from track to track. Most tunes are standards, but the setting really transforms them – and titles include "Ghost Of A Chance", "Tea For Two", "Mack The Knife", "Who", "Al & Billy Fast Blues", "Indian Summer", "Three Little Words", and "Al & Billy Blues". Mindblowing organ work from the mighty Kim Fowley – a rare instrumental set that has Kim carving out amazing sounds on the organ that really match is vocal force on other records of the time! Billy HartBilly Hart Quartet ... CD
High Note, 2005. Used ... $9.99
The first album to document a great new chapter in the career of drummer Billy Hart – his ultra-hip quartet with saxophonist Mark Turner and pianist Ethan Iverson – both younger players who have brought back a real edge to his music! The group has a very different feel than some of the other recent "revival" projects by older jazz drummers – and the focus here is extremely equal, if not even more heavily weighted towards, the younger members of the group. Turner's tenor has all the dark tones and edgey post-Shorter modes heard on his best albums under his own name – and Iverson's angular piano lines revel in a style that's almost in the legacy of Andrew Hill, but more swinging overall. Hart's rhythms are as fluid and complex as ever – making nice use of the cymbals on the fringe, but returning home to the core of the kit when a tighter groove is needed. Titles include "Mellow B", "Lorca", "Irah", "Lullaby For Mike", "Iverson's Odyssey", "Neon", "Charvez", and "Moment's Notice". CD

Sandhy & MandhyPara Castukis ... LP
Lion, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $8.99
Haunting work from the duo of Sandhy & Mandhy – a pair from the Buenos Aires scene at the end of the 60s, working in a weird mix of beat group styles and hipper rock rhythms! There's a slightly ethereal quality to the work – partly because of the way the pair trade back vocals, partly because of the light organ lines used to support the groove – which brings a haunting Zombies-like quality to the record at times – although produced with a bit simpler sound than Odyssey & Oracle! Most tunes are original, and showcase a surprising depth in songwriting – and some numbers feature some really cool percussion that complicates the sound nicely – pushing the duo past simple pop lines, into some of the headier territory of the late 60s South American scene. Titles include "Yo Te Buscare", "Hasta El Manana", "Lluvia", "La Chica Sola Y Triste", "Quisiera Olvidarte", "Esta Noche No Debes Llorar", and "Recuardo Hoy". Easy to groove with cuts this great – a sweet range of 80s 12 inch singles, mostly in soul-based styles, but also featuring a few nice bits from leftfield too! The core of the set comes from a time when a 12" remix could really take a soul cut in a whole new direction – and some of the other tracks here follow suit in a similar spirit – making for an overstuffed set of 30 titles that includes "Let's Groove (remixed holiday version)" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Love Come Down (12" version)" by Evelyn Champagne King, "This Time I Know It's For Real (12" ext rmx)" by Donna Summer, "Take Your Time Do It Right (12" version)" by SOS Band, "Go Deh Yaka (club)" by Moyaka, "Move Closer (new mix)" by Phyllis Nelson, "Another Night (dance mix)" by Aretha Franklin, "Conga (dance mix)" by Miami Sound Machine, "All Fall Down (full length version)" by Five Star, "All Around The World (long version)" by Lisa Stansfield, "Caribbean Queen (ext mix)" by Billy Ocean, "Loco In Acapulco (PH balance mix)" by Four Tops, "Party All The Time (special version)" by Eddie Murphy, "Walk Right Now (12" John Luongo disco mix)" by The Jackson, Use It Up & Wear It Out (12" single edit)" by Odyssey, and "Doctorin The House (vocal verse)" by Coldcut with Yazz. ✨✧ 8 Bold SoulsLast Option ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
8 Bold Souls have been one of the most consistent (and compelling!) jazz units working in Chicago over the past 20 years – and thanks to the notable leadership of reed player Ed Wilkerson, the group has continued to grow and flourish, bridging a gap between an older AACM south side tradition, and the younger underground players on the north side. No surprise, then, that this album came out on the indie/post-rock stronghold Thrill Jockey – but don't let that put you off if you're a real jazz fan, because Wilkerson's vision is clearer and purer than ever, and the set bristles with excitement through a batch of sparkling original compositions written in a vaguely Mingus-y style. Titles include "Pachinko", "Gang Of Four", "Brown Town", and "Odyssey". CD

A later repackaging of the excellent Flying High album – easily the group's best album by far, and unfortunately, too often the toughest one to find! The arrangements here are fantastic, and the material is waaaaaay more hip than the Ellington and Basie stuff that they wasted too much time working with. Annie Ross reprises her famous "Farmer's Market" solo, plus the group swings wildly on versions of "Mr. P.C.", and Horace Silver's "Home Cookin'" and "Come On Home". A masterpiece from the legendary SF rocker Steve Miller – and a perfect summation of the years of blues, soul, funk, and rock he'd been soaking up in the Bay Area scene – served up here with an edge that's still very firmly in place! Miller was already plenty great before this set, but somehow the record really pushes Steve into perfection territory he'd never hit before – able to cross over big with a few key tracks, but still have this sharpness in his guitar work and sense of charm that never seem to die! The album crossed over instantly with the massive cut "Fly Like An Eagle" – already great on its own, but supported here with the massive "Space Intro", which adds an extra minute of cool electronics to the tune – and other great cuts include the amazing funky rocker "Take The Money & Run", which has a break that never gets old – plus the hit "Rock N Me", and the cuts "The Window", "Wild Mountain Honey", "Sweet Maree", "Blue Odyssey", "Mercury Blues", and "Dance Dance Dance". Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive fourth volume to this totally great series – and quite honestly, maybe the funkiest so far! Compiler Tobias Kirmayer really knows his stuff – after years of recording and reissuing great music on his own Tramp label – and if anything, his time in the funky underground has only given him a sharper ear for rare singles and lost soulful nuggets – as you'll hear in this wonderful compilation! The set's overflowing with killers from the late 60s and early 70s – and most of them are numbers we've never seen reissued before – quite a feat, given how many funk collections have shown up over the years. Snowboy bills the set as a "high-quality collection of obscenely rare" funk and soul 45s – and he's totally right about all of that – although we'll also add that musically, it's pretty darn great too! Titles include "Sticks & Stones" by Dino & The Dell-Tones, "Shakers & Movers (parts 1 & 2)" by Carl Westmoreland, "Talk About Soul" by Rudy Tee & The Reno-Bops, "Discotheque Soul (edit)" by Ricky Williams, "Hey Rugh Nut" by Zodiacs, "Hipster" by C Forture & J Brinson, "I Don't Think We Are Going Back Again" by Soul Brothers Inc, "Machine Gun" by Odyssey Group, "Night Club" by The Dave Harris Trio, "Honky Games" by Iris Bell with the Jive-Ettes, and "Booty Whip (unreleased acetate version)" by Bro Byron. Four Flies (Italy), 1978. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great set of Italian electronics – a set that's maybe known better to Americans than most of the generation, due to a surprising 70s release on Folkways Records! Yet this set is quite different than the more academic electronics that usually grace that label – and echo more that shift towards moogier modes that would really crest in the Italian clubs of the next decade – still here more in a sound library mode, but turned towards nice little tunes that move between spacey instrumentals and keyboard groovers! Gianni Safred plays a range of different instruments – minimoog, polymoog, Arp Odyssey, Fender Rhodes, and Roland keyboards – layering the electronics in a way that's nice and warm, and surprisingly soulful at most moments too. Motown/MoWest/Light In The Attic, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first ever compilation of the best music made for MoWest – the eclectic, but still soulful cuts made when Berry Gordy Jr. relocated from Motown to the west coast in the early 70s – releasing cool and sometimes strange music with a soul background, yet toasted by LA sunshine! The MoWest subsidiary lasted just a few years, and gets overlooked in the canonization of Motown at it's most classic and revolutionary – but the legacy is pretty incredible. Funk, sunshine rock and soul fused adventurously by a stunningly diverse roster – late period Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons (who's comp-opening track is a slept on sunshine pop-soul classic), breezy-jazzy-soul from Odyssey, the sister funk of Sisters Love, a stunning solo left turn from Spinners singer GC Cameron and more great stuff from Syreeta, The Commodores, Suzee Ikeda, Thelma Houston and others. We've been dying for a well selected MoWest comp like this for years, and Light In The Attic stepped to the plate and knock it right out of the park. The songs choices are great, the notes are great. . .everything about it is a win. Essential! ✨✧ VariousSadar Bahar Presents Soul In The Hole – A Journey Into Funk, Soul, Boogie & Disco From One Of The World's Deepest DJs ... CD
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare grooves galore – served up by Chicago DJ Sadar Bahar, with just the right kind of depth we'd expect! The set's one of the funkiest in years from the BBE label – and bristles with great energy right from the start – loads of obscure uptempo funky cuts that almost hit a disco mode, but not entirely – laying back instead in that more spontaneous, more live approach to funky music – with a few nice touches of jazz as well! The package includes some real gems from the 70s, plus a few more bits from later years – and titles include "Comin On Strong" by Calender, "Odyssey (part 1)" by Johnny Harris, "Bail Out" by Maxayn, "French Fried Boogie" by Puzzle People, "Striving For Tomorrow" by Moses, "Free" by Seawind, "Scorcher" by Carl Grubbs, "Trying To Get Over" by Sparkles, "Funkyfied" by Chuck Higgins & The Wild Bunch, "Spirit" by Frederic Mercier, and "Mystery Of Ages" by Carlos Garnett. Roger PowellCosmic Furnace ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A very nice spacey album of stoner electronics! The general feel is similar to early Tangerine Dream – with lots of bubbling passages going on and on and on – but Powell churns it up nicely at times, and gets a groove that's almost a bit funky at times. Titles include "Ictus", "Furneau Cosmique", "Hermetic Enigma", and "Tensegrity". Instrumentas include the Arp 2600 and the Arp Odysseys. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear, a cutout notch, and promo sticker.)
