✨✧ OdysseyHappy Together ... LP
RCA, 1982. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really nice step forward for Odyssey – a record that's a bit tighter and more electric than previous sets, but which also has a nice sort of depth as well! These guys manage to balance a love of the hook with all the right sort of touches to keep the cuts from ever being too poppy or commercial – a balance that may well come from the album's great lineup of instrumentalists – who include Gary Bartz on alto, Bobby Eli on guitar, Marcus Miller on bass, and even some help from Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards on one track too. Titles include a surprisingly good funky soul cover of The Turtles' "Happy Together" – plus "Together", "Inside Out", "Happy People", "Love's Alright", and "Magic Touch". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has bent top corners, general wear, and some pen.)

Houston PersonBlue Odyssey ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1968. Used ... $19.99
An excellent Houston Person set from the late 60s – and a record that's unlike any other that he did at the time! The groove here is a bit less funky, and a bit more conceptual – kind of a soaring vibe that's still quite soulful, but in less of the stock soul jazz mode that Person was hitting – if that makes any sense! There's almost a modal energy at points – a bit like the sounds coming from Hank Mobley or Lee Morgan in the late 60s – and the group features Cedar Walton on piano, who also arranged the set – so the unusual flavor is definitely one that he brings into play. Other players include Pepper Adams on baritone, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Frankie Jones on drums – and titles include "Blue Odyssey", "I Love You Yes I Do "Holy Land", "Starrburst", and "Funky London". CD
(Out of print. Booklet appears to be signed by the artist and inscribed to the previous owner.)

✨✧ JamiroquaiFunk Odyssey ... CD
Sony, 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jay and crew are at it again – coming up with a consistently soulful batch of tracks that shows the Jamiroquai sound has plenty of steam for the 21st Century! As with previous albums, this one's got a mix of jazzy house, Stevie Wonder soul, and touches of modern rhythms that are used tastefully and without too much pretense. However, this set's also got some interesting touches in a number of the grooves – more sensitive songwriting, intimate instrumentation, and a few rough edges that come as a real surprise after recent work. Not all the tunes hang together perfectly, but there's plenty of nice ones here – especially if you've dug any of the other Jamiroquai outings. Titles include "Little L", "Main Vein", "Twenty Zero One", "Picture Of My Life", "Love Foolosophy", "Feel So Good", and "Black Crow". CD

Medicine HeadNew Bottles Old Medicine (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dandelion/Cherry Red (UK), 1970. New Copy 2 CD Gatefold ... $16.99
One of the most enigmatic acts on John Peel's legendary Dandelion Records – a north country duo with a really heady sort of sound! As you might guess from their folksy name, Medicine Head have a bit of an American roots thing going on – traces of blues and folk, often played in a fairly stripped down way – but also recorded with some much more contemporary styles overall, in keeping with the groundbreaking sound of Dandelion. There's a real focus on sound textures here – with production that kind of brings the bottom up to the top of the mix, and creates a rumbling, grumbling sort of presence even on some relatively mellow numbers. Instrumentation is varied – but includes a fair bit of acoustic guitar, bass, and percussion – on tracks that include "When Night Falls", "Ooee Baby", "Next Time The Sun Comes Round", "Do It Now", "Home's Odyssey", "Oh My Heart To Peace", "Crazy Bout You Baby", and "Goin Home". 2CD edition features a full disc of bonus material – lots more tracks from singles, BBC live material, and more – including unreleased tracks! Titles include "Pictures In The Sky", "Natural Sight", "His Guiding Hand (single)", "This Love Of Old (single)", "Coast To Coast", "All For Tomorrow", "Pictures In The Sky (demo)", and live versions of "The Pig Stomp", "To Train Time", "Walkin Blue", "Two Men Now", "Home's Odyssey", "Oh My Heart To Peace", "Coast To Coast", and more! Harry NilssonPoint! ... LP
RCA, Early 70s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
One of greatest moments of genius by pop vocals eccentric Harry Nilsson – the classic early 70s "story" album The Point – perhaps is most imaginative work! The Point is a weird tale of a kid whose head was differently shaped than the rest of his townsfolk (hey, we're not making this up!), which leads him to go on a Yellow Submarine-esque psychedelic odyssey to sort out his identity and feelings! In the end, everything ends up all happy and sweet, but not before Nilsson lays down some very cool, very groovy tracks over nice off-beat instrumentation arranged and conducted by George Tipton. Titles include "Everything's Got 'Em", "Me And My Arrow", "Poli High", "Think About Your Troubles", "Life Life", "Are You Sleeping?", "POV Waltz" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label pressing, includes comic book! Cover has light wear.)

Gianni SafredFuturibile – The Life To Come ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1978. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $32.99 39.99
A really great set of Italian electronics – a set that's maybe known better to Americans than most of the generation, due to a surprising 70s release on Folkways Records! Yet this set is quite different than the more academic electronics that usually grace that label – and echo more that shift towards moogier modes that would really crest in the Italian clubs of the next decade – still here more in a sound library mode, but turned towards nice little tunes that move between spacey instrumentals and keyboard groovers! Gianni Safred plays a range of different instruments – minimoog, polymoog, Arp Odyssey, Fender Rhodes, and Roland keyboards – layering the electronics in a way that's nice and warm, and surprisingly soulful at most moments too. Tracks include "Jazz Computer", "Future City Traffic", "Electronic Brain", "Supermind", "The Life To Come", "Disco Satellite", "Autumn 2001", and "Robot Party". LP, Vinyl record album

T ConnectionGame Of Life ... CD
Capitol/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
Great lost work from T-Connection – recorded after their big early fame on TK Records, but with a groove that's maybe even better overall! The ensemble is much smaller this time around – not a large funky group, but just a quartet – and one with a tight focus and jazzy groove that really matches some of the best modern soul on Capitol Records at the time – music that's really a cut above most of the chart soul of the time, and a perfect fusion of all the best mainstream elements of late 70s funky soul – given a leaner push towards the new generation! Keyboards glide wonderfully alongside T Coakley's great lead vocals – and titles include "Tonight's The Night", "Time Is Short", "The Game Of Life", "Love Odyssey", "Is It Real", "Closer To Home", "Superstar", and "I've Got News For You". VariousKaleidoscope – New Spirits Known & Unknown ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 22.99
A glittering constellation of groundbreaking jazz from the contemporary UK scene – a world of jazz that's changed dramatically over the past decade or so, with huge new advances in sound and styles in a range of different directions! The changes going on are a bit like some of those that have taken place in our city too – musicians who embrace jazz ideals at the core, but who are also open to so many musical modes that have developed in recent decades – so that the core performance is often blended with production elements, editing, and other touches – all in a way that has the music strongly reborn for a whole new generation! If you're worried about tricks or gimmicks that might get in the way of the music, don't be – because the depth of soul and sense of spirit on these tracks is wonderful – as you might know if you've been digging releases from some of these artists in our racks of late. And as usual, Soul Jazz have done a superb job – both with song selection and overall presentation – making the whole thing a complete delight! Titles include "Candace Of Meroe" by Theon Cross, "Pokus One" by Pokus, "Walrus" by Emma-Jean Thackray, "90 Degrees" by Yazmin Lacey, "Communication Control" by Hector Plimmer, "Long Way Home (live at the Crypt)" by Ill Considered, "Ancient World" by Nat Birchall, "Moonlight Woman" by Ruby Rushton, "Thunder Perfect" by Cromagnon Band, "Tanner's Tango" by Joe Armon Jones & Maxwell Owin, "Odyssey" by Levitation Orchestra, "Mosaic" by The Expansions, "When The World Was One" by Matthew Halsall, "Dimmsdale" by Ebi Soda, "Red Planet" by Chip Wickham, "Kito's Theme" by Ishmael Ensemble, "Yellow Ochre (part 1)" by Vels Trio, and "Mirrors" by Seed Ensemble. VariousLand Of Sensations & Delights – Psych Pop Sounds Of White Whale Records 1965 to 1970 ... CD
White Whale/Craft, Late 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A very groovy look at a very groovy record label – LA powerhouse White Whale Records, home to some mighty fine sounds in the second half of the 60s! As you'd guess from the title, there's a slight current of trippiness running through this material, but it's often blended with a really strong sense of production and a nice ear for a hook – maybe a bit like A&M Records, who might be a comparison to some of the work here – as White Whale always had a careful ear for the up-and-coming, and gave them great freedom to do their thing, and the right sort of production and presentation to make everything come out groovy! And although White Whale had some hits back in the day, this material is definitely from the farther reaches of the label's singles – as you can tell from the set list, which includes "Vegetables" by The Laughing Gravy, "You Got The Love" by Professor Morrison's Lollipop, "My Door Is Always Open" by Rainy Daze, "Love Story" by The Brothers, "Superman" by The Clique, "Look At You Now" by Bazooka, "Won't You Say You'll Stay" by The Rockets, "The Proud One" by Buster Brown, "Goin It Alone" by The Bears, "Song #7" by Lyme & Cybelle, "Darlin You Can Count On Me" by The Everpresent Fullness, "Little Girl Little Boy" by The Odyssey, "I'll Be In" by The Answer, and "We Must Find A Way" by The XLs. BBE (UK), 1970s. Used ... $9.99
Rare grooves galore – served up by Chicago DJ Sadar Bahar, with just the right kind of depth we'd expect! The set's one of the funkiest in years from the BBE label – and bristles with great energy ritht from the start – loads of obscure uptempo funky cuts that almost hit a disco mode, but not entirely – laying back instead in that more spontaneous, more live approach to funky music – with a few nice touches of jazz as well! The package includes some real gems from the 70s, plus a few more bits from later years – and titles include "Comin On Strong" by Calender, "Odyssey (part 1)" by Johnny Harris, "Bail Out" by Maxayn, "French Fried Boogie" by Puzzle People, "Striving For Tomorrow" by Moses, "Free" by Seawind, "Scorcher" by Carl Grubbs, "Trying To Get Over" by Sparkles, "Funkyfied" by Chuck Higgins & The Wild Bunch, "Spirit" by Frederic Mercier, and "Mystery Of Ages" by Carlos Garnett. ✨✧ Don EllisDon Ellis At Fillmore ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky madness at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium – and a searing set of tracks that rivals the best studio work from trumpeter Don Ellis! The feel here is really open, spontaneous, and inventive – and tunes are a lot more extended than on most of Don's studio sides from the time – with not only more room for solos, but also a seemingly greater focus on rhythms, which are often upbeat, firey, and very grooving on most numbers. There's a really great mix of trumpet and electronics on the record – including ring modulator and Fender Rhodes – and possibly inspired by the Fillmore setting, Don really opens up on all burners, spacing out with a really hip little groove. Titles include "Pussy Wiggle Stomp", "Salvatore Sam", "Rock Odyssey", "Final Analysis", "Excursion II", and "Antea". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousPraise Poems 2 – A Journey Into Deep Soulful Jazz & Funk From The 1970s ... CD
Tramp (Germany), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really righteous little collection – and one that definitely blows away most of the competition! The style here is deeper and more sophisticated than just the usual batch of funky grooves – and instead, these artists work in a special space between spiritual jazz and more ambitious soul – a very special style that only bubbled up in a rare few scenes back in the day – and which stands nicely next to better-known classics by artists like James Mason or 24 Carat Black! Like those artists, these singers and musicians don't care about conventional boundaries – or hitting the charts as well – and they soar out beautifully on wings of creative energy that make the whole collection a wonderful musical journey. Titles include "Midnight & You" by Odyssey Group, "Scratch My Back" by Soul Scratchers, "Spanish Guitar" by Jimmy Briggs with Willie Moore's Quintet, "Fly Away" by Abraham Battat, "Dawn" by Richard Martian & Co, "Missed Another Day" by Gingerbread Express, "Would You Believe" by Gloria Rosebud Black, "The Provider" by Seeds Of Fulfillment, "Wild Wild World" by Larry Dismond, "Seaons Of Doubt" by Finnegan/Finlan, and "Summer Love" by Portis Brothers. Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest new groups we've heard on Daptone in a long time – an instrumental combo that's definitely funky, but which has some of the exotic touches you might expect from their name! There's a nice current of strings that slide in alongside more familiar funk instrumentation – some violins, cellos, and even a harp – used to give the groove this expansive vibe that's partly blacksploitation soundtrack, but much more than that as well! Both Leon Michels and Neal Sugarman are in the group on tenor sax – but the real brainchild here seems to be Toby Panzer, who produced and arranged, and who plays a range of sublime sounds on organ, clavinet, harpsichord, vibes, and percussion! Titles include "Sirens Of Jupiter", "Saturn", "Pluto's Lament", "Mercury's Odyssey", "Europa & The Bull", "Sagittarius By Moonlight", "Neptune", "Mars", and "Diana By My Side". LP, Vinyl record album

Great diaspora sounds from Afrodyssey Orchestra – a group who bring so much more to their music than most of their contemporaries – in ways that both tap into their native cultural history in Greece, and really open up some of the deeper jazz currents of their songs! Instrumentation includes the percussion elements you might expect – but we're even more captivated by the work on keyboards and tenor – which really sparkle throughout, and which make the record often feel like some futurist fusion reimagining of Afro Funk inspirations – with a nice lean sound that's more small combo than "orchestra"!
