Ad LibsPresenting The Ad Libs (purple vinyl pressing) (2018 Black Friday Release) ... LP
ORG, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 23.98
A full vinyl release by The Ad Libs – a group known for their classic singles of the 60s, but one who never issued a full-length album of their own! This great little set more than corrects that fact – by bringing together 9 rare singles for the Blue Cat label, plus a few previously unissued tracks – tracks that never made it onto vinyl back in the 60s! The issued singles alone are great – a beautiful blend of one gal and four guy singers, handled with a style that's on the rougher edge of the New York style of soul at the time. Titles include "On The Corner", "Boy From New York City", "Appreciation", "Oo Wee Oo Gee", "Johnny My Boy", "The Slime", "Down Home Girl", "If She Wants Him", "He Ain't No Angel", "Nothing Worse Than Being Alone", "Kicked Around", and "I'm Just A Down Home Girl". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoSpiritual (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" (And they wondered why they never got their songs on the radio!) LP, Vinyl record album

Bad BrainsBad Brains ... CD
Roir/ORG, 1981. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A hell of a record from one of the key groups who put the "hard" in the American hardcore scene – and a record that's so blisteringly intense, we still sometimes have to check to make sure we've got it on the right speed! Although Bad Brains may fly the flag of the Rastas, and definitely claim a reggae influence – the record manages to both blow away the work of the LA scene with its full-on hardcore tracks, and the UK scene with the group's few reggae-styled numbers. The original was only issued as a cassette, but that hasn't stopped it from being one of the key punk records of the time – and titles include "Sail On", "Don't Need It", "Attitude", "The Regulator", "Banned In DC", "Jah Calling", "Supertouch/Shitfit", "Leaving Babylon", "Fearless Vampire Killers", "I", "Big Take Over", "Pay To Cum", "Right Brigade", "I Luv I Jah", and "Intro". Marion BrownPorto Novo (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Polydor/ORG, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". Chi-Lites(For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Brunswick/ORG, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! The band had always been great at love songs and uptempo numbers – but this record has them moving into more righteous area, picking up on some of the more socially conscious soul of their generation that had been working its way up the charts. The album features excellent production by Chi-Lite Eugene Record, who also wrote a lot of the material – plus arrangements by Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders. Great stuff all around, with the righteous social tunes "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to The People", "Trouble's A Comin", and "We Are Neighbors" – plus classic love songs "Have You Seen Her" and "Love Uprising", which are still kind of the band's strongest point. Loads more great stuff on this one, the album that helped the second wave of Chicago soul break out into the international market! LP, Vinyl record album

Sun RaSpaceways ... LP
ORG, 1966/1968. New Copy ... $16.99 23.98
First ever vinyl release of live material recorded in NYC in 1966 and 1968 by Sun Ra – really showing this influential era of Ra in a strong light – with a few pieces in 12-or-so piece Arkestra mode, and some great stripped down passages, too! The first side features two nine minute recordings, both beginning with melodic piano by Ra before opening up in wonderful ways. "Prelude And Shadow-Light World" is in classic cosmic jazz Arkestra mode, while "The Wind Speaks" builds with some incredible flute and strings. The other side kicks off with "We Sing This Song", led at first by some fairly straight forward group vocals, before Ra's fierce piano and some drums come in. "Outer Space Incorporated" is a grander cosmic jazz gem, building to a percussion heavy close. The short (but soaring) choral vocal, drums, bass, and piano gem "We Travel The Spaceways" is a perfect closer. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneThere's A Riot Goin' On (2LP 180 gram 45 RPM) ... LP
Epic/ORG, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from Sly and crew – moving way past the straight funk approach of earlier records, into a complicated crossover soul style that's filled with warmth and righteousness. Despite the political tone implied by the "riot" in the title and the co-option of the American flag on the cover, the album's strongest suit is its warmth and personal soul message – sometimes filled with politics, sure, but always sounding like a sexy love song, no matter how hard it tries to get righteous. Who cares, though – just get with the flow on great cuts like "Family Affair", "Luv N Haight", "Brave & Strong", "You Caught Me Smilin", and "Thank You For Talkin To Me Africa". Also features "There's A Riot Goin' On" – which runs for "0:00" minutes! LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. Titles include "Tutankhamun", "The Ninth Room" and "Tthinitthedalen". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia/ORG, 1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Charles Mingus' true classics – and an essential album in any jazz collection! This 1959 gem was recorded by Mingus at a key point in his career – when he was rising from the jazz underground into the ranks of America's elite jazzmen, penning some of the most challenging work of his career, and working with incredible younger players that interpreted his work with a great deal of fire! The tracks are a bit more tightly arranged than work on some of Mingus' previous work for labels like Atlantic and Bethlehem, but that also gives them a razor-sharp emotional edge that's carried off perfectly by players who include John Handy and Shafi Hadi on alto saxes, Booker Ervin on tenor, Willie Dennis and Jimmy Knepper on trombones, Horace Parlan on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The album is filled with key Mingus classics – like "Better Git It In Your Soul", "Boogie Stop Shuffle", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", and "Fables of Faubus" – plus "Self Portrait In Three Colors", "Open Letter To Duke", and "Bird Call". One of the most striking Ornette Coleman albums of the 60s – a set that came together because of an odd regulation, but which also resulted in some really wonderful music as well! The record documents a 1965 London concert by Ornette – but, in order to get a visa to visit the UK, Coleman had to come across as a "serious musician" – so on Part 1, he works with a very cool wind quartet that features added flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon! This set features the second half of the performance – a trio performance with Ornette on alto, but also some trumpet and some really amazing violin – next to Charles Moffett on percussion and David Izenzon on double bass. Titles include "Falling Stars", "Silence", "Ballad", "Happy Fool", and "Doughnuts". LP, Vinyl record album

An astounding live set from Johnny Griffin – recorded at the famous Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, Dexter Gordon's famous home in the late 60s – but a place that was also a showcase for the new sort of energy that Griffin was bringing to his horn at the time! The record crackles with the kind of free energy of the best Montmartre sessions – long tracks and compelling solos, stretched-out versions of tunes you may recognize, but which are transformed nicely by Griff's great solo work – and by a rhythm section that features Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! A great album as a leader from the legendary William Hooker – and a fantastic reminder of how wonderful he can be in the spotlight! The set begins with some solo drum work from Hooker, then moves into bolder improvisations with an unnamed saxophonist and pianist (odd that the label didn't give us this information) – the latter of whom plays some very cool Sun Ra-like electric piano at one point! Hooker is clearly the star of the show, though – and begins with some almost-funky lines, something we've never heard before – then moves into the more familiar mode of improvisation that's made his work on other albums so great over the years. Titles include "Jazz", "Soul", "Hieroglyphics", "Chain Gangs", "Freedom Riders", and "Rastafarian". CD

Live brilliance from the Sun Ra Arkestra – a set recorded in Tivoli in 1971, with a mix of modes that has the Arkestra swinging from spiritual passages to some very outside moments as well – sometimes with a sense of texture that's extremely powerful! The first half of the set features a number of takes on "Discipline", mixed with "Love In Outer Space", "Satellites Are Spinning", and "Enlightenment" – as percussion seems higher in the mix than most other instruments, but in a very cool way. The second half features longer, more discrete tracks – including a righteous version of "Calling Planet Earth", the very outside "The Outers", and a return to rhythm on "Adventures In Outer Space". A really great horror soundtrack from the 80s – one that's a bit different than some of the other slasher scores of the time – as the whole thing is a bit more song-based, and also works as this very weird sort of take on the standard modes of Christmas tunes from way back! The music is handled by Morgan Ames – and this presentation is different than the instrumental Perry Botkin work that normally is associated with the movie – presented here with two unissued tracks that further complete Ames combination of Christmas and horror! ✨✧ David Amram & George BarrowJazz Studio No 6 – Amram-Barrow Quartet/The Eastern Scene ... LP
Decca, 1957. Very Good+ ... $34.99
An enigmatic set of modern jazz – recorded by the Amram-Barrow Quartet – an obscure group led by tenor saxophonist George Barrow and horn player David Amram, the latter of whom would go onto great fame in the 60s and 70s for his groundbreaking arrangements, soundtrack work, and world/jazz experiments! At this point, Amram's a young modernist with some very fresh ideas – and contributes some wonderful original tunes to the session with a moody east coast style that almost has traces of the Mingus camp – particularly the work of Jimmy Knepper and Pepper Adams. George Barrow's tone on the tenor is really tremendous – sharp and soulful, reminding us a bit of the freshness that Hank Mobley brought to some of his early sessions in the 50s, but with less of a hardbop fire. The rhythm in the group is by Arthur Phipps on bass and Al Harewood on drums (Amram plays a bit of piano as well) – and titles include "City Talk", "Someday Morning Will Come", "Somewhere Along The Way", "Phipps Quipps", "Lobo Nocho", and "I Love You". Rocafort (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The Beat Bronco Organ Trio are more than great enough at the core, but they also offer up some great surprises over the course of this fantastic full length album – including slight use of clavinet and mini-moog by Gabri Casanova, who mostly handles the Hammond in the lead – and guest work at a few spots from Chip Wickham on flute and electric piano! There's a few other players who drop in along the way – but the core groove here is from the trio, who not only replicate a 60s soul jazz vibe, but also move things through a deep funk legacy – maybe more in the mode of the Sugarman Three than a Don Patterson or Jack McDuff combo on Prestige – as there are rhythms and elements that pick up bits of 70s funk. Drums are by Antonio Pax Alvarez and guitar is by Lucas De Mulder – and titles include "Hard Play", "Crispy Time", "Easy Baby", "Hey Hey", "Squirtly", "Under Pressure", "Road Trip", and "Electro Pi". A landmark recording that is one of Jorge Ben's best albums ever! The album is a perfect realization of the way that Jorge mixes Brazilian rhythms with choppy Afro grooves – and the result is a masterpiece that yeilded some of his biggest tracks ever. Included here is the great choppy funk track "Ponta De Lanca", plus loads of other goodies like "O Filosofo", "Xica Da Silva", "A Historia De Jorge", and a great remake of "Taj Mahal" – probably his greatest cut ever. Philips/Dusty Groove, 1972. New Copy ... $5.99 18.98
A stunner of a record from the mighty Jorge Ben – and a record that catapulted the Brazilian singer to international fame at the time! Ben had already been making magic for almost a decade down in Brazil – and his compositions and grooves left an undeniable impact on the scene in the post-bossa years – but this album has Jorge really emerging as the global soul star he was destined to be – from his powerful stare on the cover, right down to the grit in the grooves! The sound here is a refinement of the samba soul mode that Ben had been brewing up from the late 60s onward – a skittish mix of older samba elements, American soul, and some slight fuller production that really comes into its own here – mixing all the acoustic elements at the core with just a slight electric flourish, but never losing its edge in the process – all to provide Jorge with a sublime backdrop for his really amazing vocals. The set's a monument in funky Brazilian soul – and it includes the huge hit "Taj Mahal", which still sounds great, even after all these years – plus loads of other gems that include "O Circo Chegou", "Domingo 23", "Fio Maravilha", "Paz E Arroz", "Morre O Burro Fico O Homem", and "Que Nega E Essa". A gem all the way through – and a record we'd never part with! CD

One of Jorge Ben's greatest albums – a groundbreaking blend of samba and soul that forever went onto transform the face of Brazilian music! The record works off the groove set down by Jorge's earlier hit "Mas Que Nada" (which appears on another LP), and takes the blend of bossa, samba, and jazz, and infuses it with a sense of folksy soul delivered by Jorge's raspy vocals and acoustic guitar work. The combination of styles works perfectly – and every track on the album sparkles with a sense of excitement and new musical discovery that will probably blow away most of the recent records you've bought for your collection! Titles include "Nena Nana", "Espero Por Voce", "Nao Desanima, Joao", "Carnaval Triste", "Gimbo", "Capoeira", and "Anjo Azul". CD

Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy backings. Highlights include "No Sooner Said Than Done", which has some very weird processing on the guitar; "Full Compass", which has some nice hard drums; and "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams", a mellow moody track. Yipes! This one made everyone a bucket of money – especially Quincy Jones, whose new Qwest imprint the record was one of the first to grace. George has come a long way from his roots with Jack McDuff here – but in a way that kind of has us impressed, as he's grooving away slickly on guitar, laying down some smooth vocals that we never would have imagined from his mid 60s recordings. Includes the massive hit "Give Me The Night", a cover of "Moody's Mood", and the tracks "Star Of A Story (X)", "Midnight Love Affair", "What's On Your Mind", and "Dinorah, Dinorah". Sweet 70s funk from George Benson – an album that's a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still free from the commercial polish of his later hits! Maestro David Matthews is at the helm for this session – and most numbers have a full backing from players who include some of the best of the CTI/Kudi generation – including Ronnie Foster and Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Joe Farrell on flute, Fred Wesley on trombone, Eric Gale on rhythm guitar, Dave Friedman on vibes, and Steve Gadd on drums – who manages to kick in a nicely funky undercurrent, even on some of the mellower numbers. George's guitar is filled with warmly chromatic hues – gliding away nicely on titles that include the slow funky "Em", plus "Siberian Workout", "Shell Of A Man", "Hold On I'm Coming", "One Rock Don't Make No Boulder", and "Theme From Good King Bad". A great old school session from George Benson – and maybe one of his best albums in years! The setting of the album is just what you'd expect from the title – a tribute to the late, great Nat King Cole – with vocals by George that have an uncanny way of matching Cole's phrasing, yet which also have that warm, raspy sound we love so much from Benson – and some of his excellent scat work too! Arrangements are by Randy Waldman and Nelson Riddle – and have this classic blend of strings and jazz that works perfectly for the set – and Benson gets help from guests who include Wynton Marsalis and Til Bronner on trumpets, plus Indina Menzel and Judith Hill too. Titles include "Route 66", "Nature Boy", "Ballerina", "Smile", "Walkin My Baby Back Home", "Unforgettable", "Too Young", and "Straighten Up & Fly Right". CD

George BensonOther Side Of Abbey Road ... LP
CTI/Friday Music, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99 33.99
A wonderfully wicked album – one that sold so many copies that it's sometimes hard to remember how great it is! George takes on all of Abbey Road – or just about all of it – as he runs through some of the most beautiful tracks The Beatles ever wrote, like "Golden Slumbers", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "The End", "Because", and "You Never Give Me Your Money". The whole thing's set to some great baroque jazzy arrangements by Don Sebesky, and George digs the whole thing so much that he even sings a bit – vocalizing in a cool chromatic way that really works well with his guitar playing, and which would soon transform into a very popular style on his records of the 70s. Keyboards are by Bob James and Herbie Hancock – and there's plenty of other great jazz players in the mix! LP, Vinyl record album

George Benson is no spring chicken – but damn, he sounds plenty darn youthful here – working at the Ronnie Scotts club in London with some tight jazz funk backing! Benson sings as much as solos on guitar – and the whole thing is a great throwback to the sound of his 70s records – both in terms of the choice of tunes, and the overall spirit – that undeniable charisma that pushed George from the soul jazz underground to superstardom – a quality that's never let up over the years. Titles include "The Ghetto", "Give Me The Night", "Love X Love", "Turn Your Love Around", "In Your Eyes", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cruise Control", "Affirmation", "Moody's Mood", and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight". Warner, 1986. Near Mint- ... $9.99
This one's far more of a straight soul album than most of George Benson's earlier vocal sets – but as usual, the work is pretty high caliber throughout – and George is definitely on top of his game here, effortlessly beating others at the style they'd all started to cop from Benson by the time! Production is mostly by Narada Michael Walden, with that mix of warmth and depth that graced most of his soul sides from the time – but other tracks also get production from Kashif and Tommy LiPuma, who definitely up the pop quotient on the set. Titles include "Teaser", "Shiver", "While The City Sleeps", "Kisses In The Moonlight", "Too Many Times", and "Did You Hear Thunder". LP, Vinyl record album

George Benson & Jack McDuffGeorge Benson/Jack McDuff (New Boss Guitar of George Benson & Hot Barbeque) ... CD
Prestige, 1964/1965. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
A double-length package of organ/guitar greatness – and a set that features key 60s work by Hammond hero Jack McDuff and guitarist George Benson! First up is The New Boss Guitar Of George Benson – the first album ever cut by Benson as a leader, a cooker of a soul jazz set, recorded back when George was the guitarist in Jack McDuff's classic 60s quartet! The album's almost a McDuff Quartet one – since Jack's on Hammond and Red Holloway is on tenor – but the group's slightly different too, with the surprising additions of Montego Joe on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass! Benson's guitar is amazing throughout – sharp-edged and played with a tightness that's quite different than most of his later work – and titles include "Shadow Dancers", "The Sweet Alice Blues", "Just Another Sunday", "Easy Living", and "Rock A Bye". Next up is Hot Barbeque – one of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff! The combo here is great – with a young George Benson hard-wailing on guitar, cutting lines so fast and furious it's hard to believe – especially if you only know his later work. The legendary Joe Dukes is on drums – dancing all over the place under Brother Jack's great groovy solos – and Red Holloway completes the group on tenor sax! The title track's got a rare vocal refrain – with Jack shouting out "Hot Barbeque" over the organ – and other cuts include "Briar Patch", "Hippy Dip", "601 1/2 North Poplar", and "The Three Day Thang". Lo BorgesDinamo ... CD
Deck Disk (Brazil), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
A really fantastic album from the great Lo Borges – and proof of that long-running adage about Brazilian singers – they never falter as they age, and most seem to be able to hold onto all that made them great in the first place – at a level that's very different from artists on the Anglo side of the spectrum! Lo first rose to prominence as part of the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – and his songwriting really helped propel Nascimento in the 70s, and was also the start of a great run of fantastic, but oft-overlooked (at least on our shores) records by Borges himself – a sublime legacy that's really continued here, in a set of well-penned songs that sparkle with all the many charms of Lo's key records in the 70s. Titles include "Dinamo", "O Caos Da Cidade", "Refugio", "Altajuda", "Lava Do Vesuvio", "Quantos Janeiros", and "Apontando O Norte". CD

Naphta (Brazil), 2021. New Copy ... $19.99
The great Lo Borges first rose to fame as part of Milton Nascimento's corner club in the early 70s – and damn, if he doesn't still sound great after all of these years – maybe even more true to his roots than Milton in more recent recordings! Lo's got a hell of a way with a tune, and he works here with his brother Marcio, another member of the old corner club – on songs that are really well-penned, and have this captivating quality even if you can't understand the language – maybe at a level that wants you to learn Portuguese, just so you can unlock the magic of the way the words go together! As with much of Borges' recordings in recent decades, the approach is rock-based, but in an understated way – completely unique, and really transcendent – on titles that include "Terra Da Gado", "Muito Alem Do Fim", "Muito Querida", "Copo Cheio", "Vida Ribeirao", and "Rainha". A fantastic package based around a legendary meeting of three of the greatest minds in French music in the 60s – singer/songwriters Jacques Brel, George Brassens, and Leo Ferre – who shared a space for a famous discussion on the state of music and culture at the time! The package features 3CDs of music by each individual artist – some of the best songs by Jacques Brel, George Brassens, and Leo Ferre – plus a bonus CD that features their entire conversation together – very riveting stuff, if you can understand the language – and captured perfectly, with that flair for public intellectualism that we've never been able to manage over here, but which the French can do so well. The package also features a DVD on their meeting – a documentary, using some of the photos from the event, plus commentary by key contemporaries who include Juliette Greco and Jacques Higelin. The three music CDs alone are a bargain at this price – with 36 tracks in all – and packaged with the DVD and other CD, they make for a hell of a nice box set! CD

George BurtonReciprocity ... CD
George Burton, 2020. New Copy ... $7.99
An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Imagine the joy you felt when you first heard the early records of Robert Glasper, and you'll get some of the energy this record can deliver – on titles that include "Finding", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "Reciprocity", "Third Prayer", "Finite Space", "Us", "Power", and "Turn". High Note, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
The great George Cables is in wonderful form here – balancing things perfectly between the boldness of his left hand on the rhythms, and the more lyrical modes that he opens up with the right – serving up these effortless and beautiful tunes that make us fall in love with his music all over again! The trio's every bit as well-balanced and fluid as Cables on the keys – Essiet Essiet on bass and Victor Lewis on drums – although both of those artists step out for one solo track, and each handle a duo on their own with George. And although the standard status of the title tune might make you think you're in for something pretty basic, the first note of the record argues strongly against that – and keeps on making the case through tunes that include "Teddy", "Crazy Love", "Klimo", "This Is My Song", and "Circle Of Love". Don Cherry's New ResearchesOrganic Music Theatre Festival De Chateauvallon 1972 ... LP
INA/Blank Forms, 1972. New Copy 2LP ... $33.99 About November 12, 2021
An incredible performance from the great Don Cherry – one that's maybe the most perfect summation we've ever heard of his ability to embrace a globe's worth of influences and make them his own! The set was recorded live at a French jazz festival in 1972, and it has a very compelling group known as the New Researches Ensemble – a lineup that includes Nana Vasconcelos on percussion and berimbau, Christer Bothen on ngoni and piano, Dodou Gouirand on soprano and alto, and Moki Cherry on tanpura – all working in a larger stage setting designed by Moki, with puppet theater as well! The most striking thing might well be the vocals – much more prominent here than on other Cherry recordings, and very soulful as well – blended with jazz expressions and global instrumentation, with a vibe that's almost like some of the best work on the Saravah label during the period. The whole thing's fantastic – a great lost chapter of a musician whose well never seems to run dry – with titles that include "Resa", "Butterfly Friend", "Elixir", "Amazwe", "Witchi Tai To", "Ganesh", "North Brazilian Ceremonial Hymn", and "Dha Dhin Na Dha Tin Na". A second set from the Clarke Duke Project – and arguably even more soulful than the first! The tunes here are still rooted in jazz, but strongly move into crossover soul territory too – with vocals from both Stanley Clarke and George Duke – and grooves that really make the best of their respective talents on bass and keyboards! The overall style's perhaps a bit more like Clarke's Columbia work than Duke's – bottom-up funky at many points, but never in clunky or overdone ways – balanced with the nice sort of polish you'd expect from either leader. A nice little session that's one of Nat's last great vocal albums – thanks to some solid jazz backing by George Shearing. Shearing's group here is a super-hip west coast Latin one, with Emil Richards on vibes, Al Hendrickson on guitar, Al McKibbon on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Most tracks have them augmented by some larger backings by Ralph Carmichael – which creates this dreamy jazzy pillow for Nat to sing over. Cole's voice is still super-sweet and super-sexy, and the record is a good mix of ballads and more jazzy material. A rare moment in the major label spotlight for George Coleman – an early 90s session for Verve, and one that should have gotten him the same sort of ongoing recognition as contemporary sessions at the label by JJ Johnson, Randy Weston, and Joe Henderson! The format here is spare, but nicely varied – with Coleman on a tenor, soprano, and alto saxes alongside a trio of Harold Mabern on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. With a rhythm section that strong, you could almost throw just about any player up against them and get something great – but Coleman's also really pushing to the forefront of the tunes on most numbers, blowing with a deep voice and strong sound that almost recalls some of the work that Eric Alexander did in later years with Mabern. ❔
Amazing music by one of our favorite saxophone players of all time – captured here at the height of his 60s genius on the European scene! The tracks here have never been issued at all – but stand as a perfect complement to the killer MPS/Saba albums by Nathan Davis – and are served up with a similar blend of soulful hardbop and modernist edges – qualities that are already present in the fantastic phrasing of Davis on tenor and flute, pushed even further by the equally great work of French piano legend Georges Arvanitas! Although Arvanitas could be out when he wanted, he could also swing like the best of them – and his pairing with Davis here is perfect, and really brings out both the soul and edge in both players – especially in the company of George's fantastic rhythm duo of Charles Saudrais on drums and Jacky Samson on bass. The set's full of other surprises, too – including a bit of organ from Arvanitas, and an appearance by Jack Dieval – and the whole thing is beautifully recorded by French Radio. Tracks are all long – and include "Mid Evil Dance", "Blues For Southeast Asia", "The Hip Walk", "Rules Of Freedom", "A5", "The Thing", "Love Ye The Neighbor", "Nathalie's Dance", and "Yesterdays" in both flute and tenor versions. There's a really great pairing going on here – the always-amazing sound of Pierre Dorge's New Jungle Orchestra, and the tenor of Stephen Riley – a guest who's brought into the fold after a successful European tour with the group, and a perfect match for their ever-inventive sound! Dorge's guitar sets the scene and colors the music right from the start – with plenty of the blue elements you might expect in the title – and Riley seems as if he's challenging all the other group members to do their best with the strength of his own tenor – a lineup that includes Tobias Wiklund on trumpet, Kennet Agerlhom on trombone, Jakob Mygind on tenor and soprano, Anders Banke on tenor and bass clarinet, and Irene Becker on piano and keyboards. A sweet bit of modern funk from George Duke – working here in a mode that's definitely tighter and more soul-based than his trippier albums of the early 70s – but also in a groove that's pretty darn sweet! George wonderfully blends together his jazz roots and some of the wider soul styles he'd helped forge on the California scene – keeping things smooth, but never slick – bringing in some nice acoustic percussion alongside the album's overall electric sound. MPS (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 29.99
Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Sweet keyboards and lots of funky grooves – one of the best of George Duke's seminal albums for MPS – and a record that captures him at a key middle point in his growth! The sound here is tighter than the trippier records of before, but also never too smooth or commercial – still with plenty of cosmic influences in the funk, and a wealth of great keyboard work that rivals some of Herbie Hancock's best from the same stretch. George sings a bit himself – in a warmly compressed mode that's simply wonderful, and which further expands the grooves – and although much of the album's instrumentation comes from the keyboards, the record also features guest appearances from Airto on percussion and Ndugu on drums – as well as a bit of guest vocals from Flora Purim. A fantastic set that features the best recordings ever done by George Duke for MPS! The set's a 2LP package that compiles the sessions Solus and The Inner Source – both of which feature Duke in his purest form, at the height of his spacey keyboard powers, in settings that are neither too funky, too goofy, or too over the top. There's a lively mixture of jazzy playing, Latin riffing, and pure MPS modal grooving – and the record contains the material by Duke that always shows up on MPS comps, but which you can never actually find. Duke doesn't sing, and instead concentrates on leading the group and hitting some wonderful solos on the keys. Players include Armando Peraza on percussion, Luis Gasca on trumpet, and Jerome Richardson on reeds – and the vibe is warm, wonderful, and extremely soulful. If you've ever wondered why people consider George so great, this is the stuff to check out – as it's amazingly put together, with a sound that blows away most of his other albums. Titles include "Au-Right", "My Soul", "Manya", "Sweet Bite", "Always Constant", "Solus", "Nigerian Numberuma", "Feels So Good", and "Some Time Ago". Great stuff, and extremely difficult to find! Solid soul from the amazing George Duke – a record with a fair bit more focus than some of his previous efforts for MPS, but still done with a free and righteous vibe overall! The album's one of the last before Duke moved into smoother soul territory for his US albums of the late 70s – and it's still got plenty of the best hallmarks of the MPS years – especially on the keyboards, which are always warm and mellow, used with a great sense of space and inherent rhythm. There's a bit more vocals than before, but they're fused in nicely with the instrumentation – and players in Duke's group include Airto on percussion, Emil Richards on marimba, and Ndugu Chancler on some very heavy drums! Vocals are by Duke, Napoleon Murphy Brock, and Bonnie Bowdon Amaro – and titles include "Back To Where We Never Left", "I C'n Hear That", and "Liberated Fantasies", all of which are nice jazz funk numbers – plus "Don't Be Shy", "Seeing You", "Tzina", and "After The Love". George Duning/Ned WashingtonNaked City ... LP
Colpix, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $33.99
One of the greatest albums of crime jazz ever! But even cooler than that, the whole thing's got narration by John McIntire, very much in the spirit of the crime drama Naked City – filmed in New York in verite style. The music is in that late 50s TV crime mode, but the narration really makes it come alive even more – and a number of tracks even break into vocal numbers, with singing by either Joann Greer or James Darren – but the narration is one of the best parts, as it really recaptures the moody feel of the excellent show! Tracks include "This Is The Naked City", "City Within A City", "He Plays It Cool", "Jazz Chase", and "From the Top Of The Tower". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original mono deep groove pressing. Cover has split seams and light surface wear.)

Georgie FameRhythm & Blues At The BBC 1965 ... LP
Rhythm & Blues (UK), 1965. New Copy ... $23.99
Rare live work from one of our favorite British talents of the 60s – singer/organist Georgie Fame, a musician who was strongly inspired by American jazz and soul, but quickly took things into a territory that was all his own! Georgie barely cracked our shores during the 60s, but over in the UK, he was a whirlwind of energy – moving from an initial mix of soul and jazz covers to some wonderful songs of his own – all done here with plenty of his own great instrumentation on the Hammond, in a combo that also features Peter Coe on tenor, Colin Green on guitar, and Speedy Acquaye on congas! The work is very well-recorded – originally broadcast by the BBC, and kept safely on tape for years – and this set features material from the year 1965, 18 tracks in all – with titles that include "Preach & Teach", "Boot Leg", "My Girl", "The World Is Round", "Ride Your Pony", "Monkeying Around", "Something", "Like We Used To Be", "No No", "Point Of No Return", "Telegram", "In The Meantime", "Let The Sunshine In", and "Tell All The World About You". Georgie FameWalking Wounded – Live At Ronnie Scotts ... CD
Go Jazz, 1998. Used ... $11.99
The great Georgie Fame hardly sounds wounded here – as the singer's in the middle of a great return to form in the 90s – a decade that saw him cutting some tremendous albums like this! Fame's in his home turf of London – working with a small combo at Ronnie Scott's, and turning in songs that have a perfect blend of blues and soul roots mixed with Georgie's unique jazzy inflections – at a level that's even more sophisticated than his work in the early days! The group is great too – with Anthony Kerr on vibes, Guy Barker on trumpet, Alan Skidmore on tenor, and Peter King on alto – and Fame sings tracks that include "Cape Cuckoo", "If You Live", "Eros Hotel", "Abide With Me", "The Woodshed", "Zavolo", and "It Happened To Me/My Buddy". Farofa Carioca with Seu JorgeMoro No Brasil ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1998. Used ... $16.99
Early work from Seu Jorge – heard here with the group Farfoca Carioca, but still in a style that's got the same soulful samba touches of his own work! The sound is a bit more upbeat here – vocals that are often sung by the whole group at once, even though Jorge gets plenty of solo moments – and the instrumentation is live and funk-based, but with plenty of jazzy flourishes on the horns, and a fair bit of Brazilian percussion too. And while the record maybe doesn't pack a punch that's as hard as some of Seu Jorge's best work, it's still plenty darn great on its own – a rare example of a set like this coming from Brazil at the time, and a real precursor for grown to come – not only in Jorge's music, but in Brazilian grooves in general! Titles include "Bebel", "Sao Gonca", "Moro No Brasil", "Jacare", "Indio", "Rabisca Robson", and "Menino Da Central". CD

George FreemanNew Improved Funk ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $12.99
The title certainly gets it right – as the album's one of the funkiest ever from guitarist George Freeman, and one of the few to really hit that messed-up groove he was working in the clubs before his mid 70s retreat to Chicago! The style here is often all over the map – a mix of soul jazz and funkier numbers, but often served up with less of the direction than you'd get on Prestige, and even less of that on Groove Merchant – more in a raw small combo mode, with Freeman's guitar hitting plenty of raspy notes and weird solo excursions that keep even the mellower tunes exciting! The record features 2 different groups – one with John Young on piano, the other with Bobby Blevins on organ – and brother Von Freeman plays tenor sax on the whole set, although not nearly in the spotlight as George! (Definitely in keeping with something that Von told George many years back – quoted to us by George – "When you've got your own album, make sure that people know that you're the star!") Titles include "New Improved Funk", "Daffy", "Happy Fingers", "Confirmed Truth", "Guitar Lover Man", and "Big Finish". CD

Barbara GeorgeI Know – The AFO & Sue Records Years ... CD
Jasmine, Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Barbara George is best known for the title track of this set – but she's also a hell of a singer from the early 60s New Orleans scene, and one who wrote a fair bit of her own material too! George is very much like Barbara Lynn in that way – more than just a great voice pulled into the studio to cut a few singles – as she's got a depth of feeling and great way with a pen, talents that should have been able to blossom much more strongly in years to come – had the singer ever gotten the treatment she deserved! Still, you can't beat the setting here – half tracks that were recorded with the great Harold Battiste for the AFO label, plus more Sue Records singles from the early 60s – before George left music way too early. Titles include "Whip O Will", "I Know", "The Recipe", "Bless You", "If You Think", "I'm In A Strain", "Hurted", "Without Love", "You Talk About Love", "Try Again", "Send For Me", and "If When You've Done The Best You Can". A stone stomper from this short-lived 60s group – a killer cut that has plenty of Detroit influence in the grooves – a great compressed approach to the rhythm, which really seems to set the girls' vocals free! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Milford GravesMilford Graves Percussion Ensemble With Sunny Morgan ... CD
ESP, 1965. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
A classic album of avant percussion – even if the title's a bit misleading! The Milford Graves Percussion Ensemble is mostly just Milford Graves himself, playing on drums, bells, gongs, and shakers – joined on this early album by Sunny Morgan, who also plays drums and bells on the set – working with Graves in a spiritual exploration of space and sound that predates some of the AACM recordings by a few years, and which shows ESP to be one of the most groundbreaking jazz imprints of the 60s! Tracks have a fairly hard hitting approach, and titles include "Nothing", "Nothing 13", "Nothing 5-7", and "Nothing 19". CD

George Grawe QuartetMelodie Und Rhythmus ... CD
Okka Disk, 1998. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Chicago attracted many great European improvisers to its scene in the 90s – and one of them was pianist Georg Grawe, who moved to the city to take advantage of its thriving jazz and free music scene! Here, Grawe demonstrates his rapport with the city – working with a great group that features Kent Kessler on bass, Hamid Drake on drums, and Frank Gratkowski on reeds – in modes that are quite different than some of George's other recordings of the period! A wild mix of jazz harmonies, intricate polyrhythms, free blowing, and tight bits of straight jazz – on titles that include "Multiversum", "Trajectory", "Nodality", "Pressing Scopes", "Fringe Factor", and "Memory Of Wings II". George GruntzSt Peter Power ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
Wild stuff! George Gruntz plays this big ol' church organ in Switzerland, and he runs through a tight set of jazz standards, like "Lonely Woman", "I'll Remember Clifford", "Django", "Summertime", and "God Bless The Child". Eberhard Weber and Daniel Humair back him up, but not in the usual rhythm section way, since the organ overpowers most of their subtle efforts. They mostly add punctuation, and lots of nice fills between the washes of sound that Gruntz gets from the organ. The album's another unique one for MPS, and with a sound that should be hokey, but which is actually stunningly wonderful. LP, Vinyl record album
