Art Ensemble Of ChicagoSpiritual (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" (And they wondered why they never got their songs on the radio!) LP, Vinyl record album

Bad BrainsBad Brains ... LP
Roir/ORG, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 21.99
A hell of a record from one of the key groups who put the "hard" in the American hardcore scene – and a record that's so blisteringly intense, we still sometimes have to check to make sure we've got it on the right speed! Although Bad Brains may fly the flag of the Rastas, and definitely claim a reggae influence – the record manages to both blow away the work of the LA scene with its full-on hardcore tracks, and the UK scene with the group's few reggae-styled numbers. The original was only issued as a cassette, but that hasn't stopped it from being one of the key punk records of the time – and titles include "Sail On", "Don't Need It", "Attitude", "The Regulator", "Banned In DC", "Jah Calling", "Supertouch/Shitfit", "Leaving Babylon", "Fearless Vampire Killers", "I", "Big Take Over", "Pay To Cum", "Right Brigade", "I Luv I Jah", and "Intro". ✨✧ Bad BrainsRock For Light ... LP
PVC/ORG, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 19.99
A seminal album from The Bad Brains – and a set that forever shaped the sound of hardcore in the 80s! These guys are incredibly tight throughout – no doubt because of some previous work in jazz – but they never get overindulgent or too jammy at all – and instead deliver this blinding, blistering version of hardcore that really blows away some of the lesser-trained groups in the underground at the time – full of fire and fierce determination, with a force that's still being felt all these many years later! And despite their rasta roots, there's hardly any reggae-styled moments here – really just a few tracks amidst the triple-time numbers – and probably less than you'd find on an early 80s Clash album! Titles include "Banned In DC", "Sailin' On", "At The Movies", "Right Brigade", "Supertouch", "FVK", "Coptic times", "How Low Can A Punk Get", and "Big Takeover" – and oddly, the whole thing was produced by Ric Ocasek too! William HookerBig Moon ... LP
ORG, 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 35.99
Maybe one of the most beautiful albums we've heard from William Hooker in years – and a set that has so much more to offer than just his work on drums! There's certainly some of the freer, more improvised moments on the record that you'd expect from Hooker – but there's also these wonderfully tuneful passages, too – work that draws from all sorts of warmly crafted sounds from other group members – a lineup that features Mara Rosenbloom and Mark Hennen on piano, Jimmy Lopez on percussion, Charles Compo on flute, Stephen Gauci and Sarah Manning on saxes, and Jal Rohm Parker Wells on bass. There's also a bit of electronics from Theo Woodward – an element that's used sparingly, but in really great ways – and at the core, Hooker is still very much in charge of the proceedings, as you can feel when he really gets going on the kit. Titles include "Right Speech", "Ring Pass Not", "Seven Rays", "Major Planetary Centres", "Sequence Of The Form", and "Synthesis Of Understanding". LP, Vinyl record album

Phil RanelinInfinite Expressions ... LP
ORG, 2021. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
The legendary Phil Ranelin has been giving us great music for decades – yet he still sounds as fresh and vibrant here as ever – working in a small combo that really lets us focus on his phrasing and imagination on trombone, and his very righteous way of putting over a tune! Phil's sound is incredible here – maybe even more inventive than during his Tribe Records days of the 70s – and the group is a small one, with just percussion from Carlos Nino, guitar from Hideaki Tokunaga, drums from Andre Beasley, and bass from Ian Martin or Michael Alvidrez. The lack of piano or other horns means that Ranelin is right up front in the mix at all times – and that spotlight only seems to call more attention to his genius than ever before. Titles include "Spirit Of Dolphy", "One More Blues", "A Weaver Of Dreams", "In Time With The Times", "Blues For Paula", and "Infinite Expressions". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful solo piano set by Cecil Taylor – recorded live in Ohio in 1973, and originally released on his own small Unit Core label. The work is a perfect example of how Cecil was stretching himself at the time – working in a mode that was part free jazz, part 70s spiritualism, opening up far more than even in his classic group recordings of the late 60s. The album features one long work – "Indent" – separated into 3 "layers". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun RaStandards ... LP
ORG, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual setting for Sun Ra – given that the legendary jazz figure is working here on a host of American songbook standards – and not the cosmic tunes of his own creation! And yes, as you might guess, there's an offbeat feel to almost all the performances here – which stand as a great way of illustrating the deep respect for jazz history that Ra had, even though he was always pushing the music in different directions! There's a number of moments that are quite respectful of the melodies, while others are a bit more offbeat – and the work features Ra solo on one track, working with the bass of Ronnie Boykins and tenor of John Gilmore on the rest, plus work from drummer Clifford Jarvis and trumpeter Walter Miller on four titles. Tracks include "Can This Be Love", "Keep Your Sunny Side Up", "But Not For Me", "Time After Time", and "Easy To Love". First time on vinyl! LP, Vinyl record album

JA classic early full length set from the young Johnny Cash – a record that pulls together a range of great material done for Sun Records in the years before his near-lifetime move to Columbia Records! Here, you'll hear the evolving Johnny Cash sound at its best – some raw, rumbling numbers that have that choppy guitar sound and tight backing from the Tennessee Two – mixed with a few others that show the label trying out some of the larger production modes that Columbia would add in – but still in a very spare style overall. Titles include the classic first recording of "Folsom Prison Blues" – plus "I Walk The Line", "Remember Me", "Cry Cry Cry", "I Heard That Lonesome Whistle", "Doin My Time", "I Was There When It Happened", and "So Doggone Lonesome". Ornette ColemanShape Of Jazz To Come (180 gram 2LP pressing – 45rpm) ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic pulse, with drums, bass, trumpet, and alto sax incredibly intertwined! Ornette's really got an edge on his instrument – cutting even more deeply here than the clipped, punctuated cornet work of Don Cherry – and the rhythm team of Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are simply amazing – not just keeping up with the energy of Ornette, but also really helping facilitate it as well! Titles include the haunting "Lonely Woman", plus "Peace", "Chronology", and "Focus on Sanity". LP, Vinyl record album

George AdamsNightingale (with bonus track) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1989. Used ... $14.99
Beautiful work from reedman George Adams – a set that has him blowing some great tenor, plus a bit of flute and soprano sax too – on a set of laidback tracks served up with a great quartet! George's horn is definitely the star attraction here – but the combo's got just the right sort of sensitive swing to bring out his best – Hugh Lawson on piano, Sirone on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – all sparking their own sense of creativity throughout, yet never overwhelming George's lead. A few tunes pick up a great groove, which leads to some especially wonderful lines from Adams – those bolder moments that we love from the early years, recast here in the space of a familiar song – on titles that include "Cry Me A River", "Moon River", "A Nightingale Sang In Berkely Square", "Going Home", and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". CD also features the bonus track "Besame Mucho". CD

George Adams, Martin Hannibal Peterson & FriendsMore Sightings ... CD
Enja, 1984. Used ... $11.99 14.99
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. Titles include "Soul Brothers", "Do We Know Where We Are Going", "Melanie", "More Sightings", and "Don't Take Your Love From Me". CD

Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A strong outing from this key post-Mingus collaboration – and a record that really shows both Don Pullen and George Adams really coming into their own! Pullen's piano can have plenty of edges, as can Adams' tenor – but there's also some warmer, lyrical moments that really round things out – kind of a balance between righteous energy and deeper quietude that the musicians might have learned during their time with Charles Mingus – taken to a logical small group extension here. Adams also plays a bit of flute, which is especially nice – and the group also includes Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "The Great Escape Or Run John Henry Run", "Seriously Speaking", "Soft Seas", and "Protection". CD

Solidly soaring work from tenorist George Adams – recording live here with pianist Don Pullen, one of his best musical partners during the 80s! The album's got a bit more of a bite than some of the pair's studio sessions – a bit straighter overall, but recorded with a nice degree of energy, and some long tracks that really let both players open up nicely – in a combo that also features John Scofield on guitar, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The inclusion of Scofield's guitar changes up the group's sound in a nice way – adding in some more chromatic elements that really stand out – and titles include "IJ", "Flame Games", "Song Everlasting", and "Forever Lovers". Sublime work from the great Jorge Ben – a collection of recordings that are mostly from his glory years on the Philips label, a top-shelf batch of funky tunes throughout! The CD has a slightly different track list than the classic Art De Jorge Ben album, but the feel here is still quite similar – a brilliantly soulful approach to samba and other Brazilian rhythms, all styled with the uniquely globe-spanning sensibility that still makes Jorge one of the greatest living Brazilian artists! Philips/Dusty Groove, 1972. New Copy ... $5.99 18.98
A stunner of a record from the mighty Jorge Ben – and a record that catapulted the Brazilian singer to international fame at the time! Ben had already been making magic for almost a decade down in Brazil – and his compositions and grooves left an undeniable impact on the scene in the post-bossa years – but this album has Jorge really emerging as the global soul star he was destined to be – from his powerful stare on the cover, right down to the grit in the grooves! The sound here is a refinement of the samba soul mode that Ben had been brewing up from the late 60s onward – a skittish mix of older samba elements, American soul, and some slight fuller production that really comes into its own here – mixing all the acoustic elements at the core with just a slight electric flourish, but never losing its edge in the process – all to provide Jorge with a sublime backdrop for his really amazing vocals. The set's a monument in funky Brazilian soul – and it includes the huge hit "Taj Mahal", which still sounds great, even after all these years – plus loads of other gems that include "O Circo Chegou", "Domingo 23", "Fio Maravilha", "Paz E Arroz", "Morre O Burro Fico O Homem", and "Que Nega E Essa". A gem all the way through – and a record we'd never part with! CD

Philips (Japan), 1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Brilliant early work from Jorge Ben – a set that shouldn't be confused with the US album of the same name, and which is one of Jorge's first few gems of the 60s! The album's got Ben stepping out with a slightly jazzier feel than on his debut – a style that's still heavily steeped in the guitar-driven samba that first won him fame, but which also features a fair bit of bossa-influenced instrumentation too – bits of piano, flute, and horns that echo with some darker colors and tones that really add a lot to the tunes! The backings are never too full – nor too full of themselves – but this added level of sophistication really helps push Jorge into a range of fresh new sounds – and that's saying a lot, given how fresh his music from the time already was. Titles include "Agora Ninguem Chora Mais", "Telefone De Brotinho", "Patapatapata", "Na Bahia Tem", "Jorge Well", "Deixa O Menino Brincar", "Bom Mesmo E Amar", and "O Homem Que Matou O Homem Que Matou O Homem Mau". A great bit of 80s soul from Jorge Ben – a record that has ol' Jorge looking a bit new wave on the cover, but which is filled with grooves that are every bit as strong as any of his late 70s work! The soul style is very firmly in place here – a bit more mainstream than before, but in a way that helps Ben forcus his sound strongly – almost going for a pan-global approach to the music, given the way you can appreciate these tunes from a groove-heavy perspective, even if you don't know the language! His vocals are as wonderful as always, and although the sound is tight, the production's never too commercial nor too slick – a really great balance that comes off beautifully. Jorge BenForca Bruta ... CD
Philips/Dusty Groove, 1970. Used ... $34.99
A fantastically soulful album from Jorge Ben – one of his greatest records ever, and a key part of Brazilian music in the 70s! The album marks an earthier shift for Jorge – a sound that's still rooted in the samba influences of the 60s, but which also takes on a bit more soul at the bottom – thanks to rhythmic contributions from Trio Mocoto, who work here famously to help Ben shape the overall feel of the set! There's still a bit of larger orchestrations at moments, but these are used sparingly just to sweeten the sound – leaving the main force of the music to come from Jorge's guitar, and the cuica, percussion, and tamborim of the trio. The vocals are wonderful too – slightly raspy, and with a bit more feeling than we ever remember Jorge having on record – sometimes a bit intimate, yet always with an undeniable presence throughout. One of those records that still sends chills up our spines, year after year – with tracks that include "Oba La Vem Ela", "Ze Canjica", "Pulo Pulo", "Apareceu Aparecida", "Terezinha", "Mulher Brasileira", "Forca Bruta", "O Telefone Tocou Novamente", and "Charles Junior". Jorge BenJorge Ben (1969) ... CD
Philips/Dusty Groove, 1969. Used ... $9.99
A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! Other tracks include "Criola", Cade Tereza", "Domingas", "Barbarella", "Quem Foi Que Roubou A Sopeira" and more. CD

One of Jorge Ben's greatest albums – a groundbreaking blend of samba and soul that forever went onto transform the face of Brazilian music! The record works off the groove set down by Jorge's earlier hit "Mas Que Nada" (which appears on another LP), and takes the blend of bossa, samba, and jazz, and infuses it with a sense of folksy soul delivered by Jorge's raspy vocals and acoustic guitar work. The combination of styles works perfectly – and every track on the album sparkles with a sense of excitement and new musical discovery that will probably blow away most of the recent records you've bought for your collection! Titles include "Nena Nana", "Espero Por Voce", "Nao Desanima, Joao", "Carnaval Triste", "Gimbo", "Capoeira", and "Anjo Azul". CD

A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Remixed versions of older Jorge Ben tracks – given a sound here that almost seems as if they're trying to push his work on the US R&B market. Most tracks are listed as being the "groove" version – and the beats are pumped up, the production's slicked down, and there's a general overall dancefloor sound that would make Jorge's work more palatable to a more mainstream audience. Problem is, it's hard to beat the soulfulness of the original versions! Titles include remakes of "Pais Tropical", "Dzarm", "Filho Maravilha", "Taj Mahal", "Alcohol", and "Syrogyra Story". CD

The approach is a bit gimmicky, to be sure, but the music is surprisingly great – and many numbers have an earthy, spontaneous feel that really cuts against the large concert venue setting. Most numbers feature just a single Jorge in the lead – although there are a few group numbers as well – and titles include "Jorge De Capadocia", "Fenix", "Cowboy Jorge", "Sao Jorges", "Monalisa", "Taj Mahal/A Banda Do Ze Pretinho", "Por Causa De Voce Menina/Chove Chuva/Mas Que Nada", "Malandro", and "Maracatu Atomico". CTI, 1970. Used Gatefold ... $14.99 18.99
A great early CTI session by George Benson, and one of the most stripped-down, straight-ahead funky records he did for the label! There's a sharpness here that's different than the larger feel of some of Benson 's later records – a sound that almost links back to his soul jazz roots in the 60s – played by a tight combo that features Benson on guitar, Clarence Palmer on organ, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus percussion from Michael Cameron and Albert Nicholson. There's a version of "So What" on here that's got to be one of the best funky takes of that standard ever – with great hard grooves on the intro – and on other cuts, the real genius is in the way the simple tracks are arranged to shift between darkly chromatic passages and slight bits of funk. Titles include "All Clear", "Ode To A Kudu", and "Somewhere In The East". CD also features 3 bonus alternate takes, too! CD

George BensonIn Your Eyes ... LP
Warner, 1983. Very Good+ ... $2.99
Sweetly jazzy soul from George Benson – a key classic from his great run at Warner Brothers Records, and the kind of record that George did better than anyone else at the time! Back in the 60s, we'd never have guessed that Benson's sweetly crackling vocals would dominate popular jazz more than his great guitar work – but hearing George here, it's clear that his soul work could easily outshine his guitar, especially when set up in a package like this! Atlantic soul maestro Arif Mardin produced, and as with his Chaka Khan productions for Warner at the time, he gives Benson a clean, clear modern style that's certainly pop, but also a lot less cluttered and clunky than modes used with other artists at the time. George is mostly on the vocal tip for the set, and Kashif helps out on one track – no surprise, given that Kashif was soon to walk down the path that Benson had started with his first few vocal albums in the 70s. Titles include "Love Will Come Again", "Use Me", "Late At Night", "In Search Of A Dream", "Lady Love Me", "In Your Eyes", and "Never Too Far To Fall". LP, Vinyl record album

A great bit of work from the re-formed Blues Magoos – a new incarnation of the group that had a few early garage rock hits, and which on this set features some great work by Eric Kaz, who seems to add a hip singer-songwriter feel to the record. The group have clearly been listening to a lot of blues and blue eyed soul, but also seem to have picked up a jazzy edge too – one that shows up nicely on the album's use of vibes. We first fell in love with the music of Lo Borges when he started working with Milton Nascimento back in the 70s – and since that time, he's never faltered a bit – turning out compellingly creative work like this for the past few decades! It's always a few years between Borges records, but it's always worth the wait – as his sound is so mature, so well put-together you can definitely feel the thought and care that's gone into the process. This time around, he seems to return to some of the spacious, wide-ranging modes he was exploring back in the 70s – that cascading sound that always seems to work both speakers in our stereo to their fullest, wrapping us up with a magnificent sort of presence that goes well beyond the simple barriers of language. Guitars are nice and fuzzy, Lo's vocals are great, and titles include "Viva", "Imaginaria", "Caminho", "Chegado", "Cordao De Ouro", "Transparente", "Suite Imaginaria", and "Fronteira". CD

As with other recent efforts, the songwriting is superb – as thoughtful as ever, and put together with a gentle sort of cohesion that really makes the whole thing shine – amazingly subtle, and still some of the most naturalistic material you'll ever hear from Brazil! Production is very much up to the task, with a timeless quality that makes the record feel like some of Borges' best material from decades past. An incredible album from Lo Borges – one of the best singer/songwriters on the Brazilian scene of the 70s! Borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the Club Da Esquina album by Milton Nascimento – and his work as part of Milton's "corner club" really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. Yet Borges is almost an equally great talent on his own – with a soaring, soulful approach that's every bit as great as the best Nascimento material from the period – and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! The sound here is completely sublime right from the start – music that moves us, even if we can't understand the language of the lyrics – like some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. There's maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the Milton Nascimento work of the period – but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation – which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Beto Guedes, Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, and Tenorio Jr. The songwriting is amazing – and titles include "Cancao Postal", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", "Nao Foi Nada", "Calibre", "Faca Seu Jogo", "Toda Essa Agua", "Pensa Voce", "Como O Machando", and "Aos Baroes". Lo BorgesMeus Momentos ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1970s/Early 80s. Used 2CD ... $19.99
One of our favorite Brazilian singers ever! Lo Borges is perhaps best known to the world for his incredible vocals on Milton Nascimento's classic Clube Da Esquina album – but he made a heck of a lot of great recordings on his own, many of which are compiled here on this long-overdue best-of set! The 2CD package includes a total of 28 cuts – all of them super-rare, and from albums that we almost never see. Borges was a true genius, and he never achieved the same sort of fame outside the US as some of his contemporaries – which makes these recordings even more essential to have. Tracks include "O Trem Azul", "Paisagem De Janela", "A Via Lactea", "Vida Nova", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", "Nau Sem Rumo", "Como O Machado", "Ela", "Meu Filme", "O Cacador", "Nau Rem Rumo", "Cancao Postal", "Sempre Viva", and his heavenly solo reading of "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser". Fantastic stuff – and one of our favorite releases this year! CD

Lo BorgesSonho Real ... CD
Dubas (Brazil), 1984. Used ... $19.99
Great work from Lo Borges – one of our favorite Brazilian singer/songwriters from the 70s and 80s – and unlike a lot of his contemporaries, he kept his work very strong into the 80s! He cut his teeth with Milton Nascimento, and you'll hear more than a touch of that sound here – but the record's also got a maturity and voice that's completely Lo's own, and which puts the whole thing together nicely. Excellent songwriting makes the album a real treat, even if the production style's a bit modern. Titles include "Bom Sinal", "Tempestade", "Sonho Real", "Arma Branca", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", and "Feliz Aniversario". CD

George BraithExtension (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.99
One of our favorite-ever albums on Blue Note – a great 60s session that features one of the most unique reed players to ever record for the label! George Braith takes a bit of a page from Roland Kirk – in that he handles a variety of oddly-tuned reed instruments, but with a wonderfully soulful focus – mixing this nice edge with more familiar soul jazz modes, at a level that makes his records of the time completely unique! The group also features some sublime organ lines from Billy Gardner – a player you might know more from previous records with Lou Donaldson on piano, but who's very open and expressive here – almost echoing Larry Young at times – which is great next to the work of Grant Green's guitar on the record! Braith's playing is incredible – slightly exotic, but also quite soulful – and titles include "Nut City", "Sweetville", and "Extension". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George BraithSoul Stream ... LP
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
George Braith is one of our favorites! His style of playing odd reed instruments, sometimes simultaneously, is a lot like Roland Kirk, but he has more of a swingin' hard bop feel to his music than Kirk. This LP, cut with Grant Green, and the great, underrated organ of Billy Gardner, has a very similar feel to the Larry Young/Grant Green efforts. The groove is funky, but also really modal – and the solos stretch a lot farther than you'd expect! Titles include "Jo Anne", "Boop Bop Bing", "Billy Told", and "Soul Stream". LP, Vinyl record album

George BurtonReciprocity ... CD
George Burton, 2020. Used ... $0.99
An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Imagine the joy you felt when you first heard the early records of Robert Glasper, and you'll get some of the energy this record can deliver – on titles that include "Finding", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "Reciprocity", "Third Prayer", "Finite Space", "Us", "Power", and "Turn". George CablesBy George – George Cables Plays The Music Of George Gershwin (with bonus track) ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1987. Used ... $6.99
George Cables takes on the music of George Gershwin – but in a set that's way more than just the usual batch of songbook standards! Cables has that warm glow that always makes us feel like he's playing electric, even when he's acoustic, as on this session – kind of a fluid glide that's supported here by John Heard on bass and Ralph Penland on drums – although George also plays solo on a few numbers too. Titles include "My Man's Gone Now", "A Foggy Day", "Someone To Watch Over Me", and "Bess You Is My Woman Now". CD also features a bonus version of "Summertime". CD

George CablesMy Muse ... CD
High Note, 2012. Used ... $9.99
Stellar sounds from pianist George Cables – the kind of fluid, soulful set he's been serving up for years – but one with a bittersweet undercurrent too! The "muse" in the title is Cables' late partner – for whom he wrote a few key tracks on the set, showing us that his skills as a composer are richer than ever – and really on a par with his majestic playing on the date as well. There's a lyricism that we haven't heard this strongly from George in a number of years – and the trio's beautifully balanced, with bass from Essiet Essiet and drums from Victor Lewis – both partners sensitive to the needs of the songs. Cables brackets the record with two solo performances – and titles include "My Muse", "Helen's Song", "But He Knows", "You're My Everything", "He It's Me You're Talking To", and "My Old Flame". CD
