✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoSpiritual (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" (And they wondered why they never got their songs on the radio!) LP, Vinyl record album

Marion BrownPorto Novo (red vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Polydor/ORG, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". William HookerSymphonie Of Flowers ... CD
ORG, 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 11.98
A great album as a leader from the legendary William Hooker – and a fantastic reminder of how wonderful he can be in the spotlight! The set begins with some solo drum work from Hooker, then moves into bolder improvisations with an unnamed saxophonist and pianist (odd that the label didn't give us this information) – the latter of whom plays some very cool Sun Ra-like electric piano at one point! Hooker is clearly the star of the show, though – and begins with some almost-funky lines, something we've never heard before – then moves into the more familiar mode of improvisation that's made his work on other albums so great over the years. Titles include "Jazz", "Soul", "Hieroglyphics", "Chain Gangs", "Freedom Riders", and "Rastafarian". CD

Antonio Carlos JobimStone Flower (2LP 180 gram edition) ... LP
CTI/ORG, 1970. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $99.99
One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's greatest records – and a perfect blend of his subtle bossa genius with the moody electric sound of CTI! Jobim plays electric and acoustic piano, guitar, and sings a bit – and Deodato handled the arrangements with a breezy brilliance that matches all the magic of Jobim's wonderful compositions, but gives them a slightly more fluid feel too – in a way that's somewhat more sophisticated than the sound of Jobim's previous CTI outings – Tide and Wave. Other players on the album include Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, and Airto on percussion – and there's a great mix of Brazilian and American styles on the set – electric, sinister, breezy, and always wonderful! Includes the titles "Sabia", "God & The Devil In The Land Of The Sun", "Children's Games", "Stone Flower", "Brazil", "Tereza My Love", and "Choro". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic Sun Ra set from the late 60s – recorded in New York in 1968, and featuring a lineup that includes Kwami Hadi on trumpet, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor and drums, and Pat Patrick on baritone and flute – all classic players who are the height of their most expressive powers here! The sound is quite "out" overall – really jamming in an almost free jazz sort of way at times – showing the growing boldness and confidence of the Arkestra, as they keep ahead of the pack of all the younger artists they've inspired by this point in their career. Titles include "Saturn", "Song of the Sparer", "Spontaneous Simplicity", and "Outerspaceways Incorporated". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoTutankhamun (transparent blue vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. Titles include "Tutankhamun", "The Ninth Room" and "Tthinitthedalen". LP, Vinyl record album

ORG, 1961. New Copy 2LP Gatefold. (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic live performance from legendary reedman Jimmy Giuffre – captured here at the time when he was really stepping out with his sound, as heard more famously on the albums Fusion and Free Fall! As with those records, the group here is Jimmy's amazing trio with Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass – both very young modernists who'd go on to make their own mark on jazz over the decades, but already perfect accompanists for Giuffre's very open, freewheeling work on clarinet – quite different than his sound of a decade before, and even than his piano-less trios of the late 50s. Titles include "The Gamut", "Brief Hesitation", "Cry Want", "Trance", "Carla", "Scootin About", "That's True That's True", "Whirrr", and "Temporarily". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia/ORG, 1971. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The groundbreaking first album from Weather Report – a massive session that took fusion to a whole new level for the 70s! Most of the players here had been associated with Miles Davis at some point in the year or two beforehand – and Miles' electric work is definitely a starting point for this group – but they quickly flow off in whole new directions, thanks to the mighty legacy of their own talents on previous records! The group features an intense lineup with Wayne Shorter on saxes, Joe Zawinul on keyboards, Miroslav Vitous on bass, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, and Airto on percussion – all coming together in a groove that's often incredibly raw and free – with plenty of sharp electronic bits from Zawinul crackling under the acoustic elements in the music. The sound is still quite revolutionary all these years later – and titles include "Tears", "Eurydice", "Orange Lady", "Umbrellas", and "Milky Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Never-issued work from Jimmy Sweeney – a singer who's maybe best known for a demo recording that supposedly caught the ear of Elvis Presley – but who is more than fantastic here enough on his own! Sweeney has this nice way of pitching his vocals – able to rise in tone, in a way that would become more familiar during the soul music years – which really works great here amidst more R&B styled backings, a few of which are also maybe a bit of a precursor to country soul! Titles include "Sick Sick Sick", "Deep Blues", "I Pay With Every Breath", "Desire", "Don't Come In Here", "It Wouldn't Be The Same", "She Wears My Ring", "Gonna Find My Sweetheart", "I'll Follow You", "Lunch In A Bucket", and "Deacon Brown" – plus "Without You", the track that Elvis supposedly dug. If you ever needed a record to convince you that The Yardbirds are pure genius, this one is it! Roger The Engineer captures all that was great about the group at their start – their sharp guitars, their undeniable wit, and that really special way they had of turning their bluesy inspirations into something completely new and different for the mod 60s scene! Jeff Beck is amazing on guitar – and the set's one of those that will have you go "oh yeah, that's why he was so important" – setting fire to the rest of the group, who themselves explode in ways that are mindblowing – and the whole thing's a blueprint for countless records to come from other artists who never got things this right. The never-issued full length album from Philly funk combo Nat Turner Rebellion – a group led by Joseph Jefferson, who'd later write great songs for others – but who here is standing strong at the head of a very righteous group! Nat Turner Rebellion issued a few singles on the Philly Groove label, but never got the chance to give the world it's full length message – and this set was rescued from lost tapes at the Sigma Sound Studios by some students at Drexel University – a great lost legacy in sound, with a funky power and positive message that's maybe more important now than ever before! These guys often have the sock-soul punch of Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul – and titles include "Tribute To A Slave", "Love Peace & Understanding, "Fruit Of The Land", "Plastic People", "Getting Higher Together", and "Laugh To Keep From Crying". One of Jim Hall's most compelling albums from the 70s – a mix of lightly swinging tunes and more complicated numbers, recorded with some of his best partners from earlier years! Chet Baker is on trumpet, Paul Desmond is on alto sax – and the rest of the group includes Ron Carter bass, Roland Hanna piano, and Steve Gadd on drums. Hall's style is as airy and free-floating as ever – and the spacious arrangements on the album by Don Sebesky only support his work even more. George AdamsNightingale ... CD
Blue Note, 1989. Used ... $12.99
Beautiful work from reedman George Adams – a set that has him blowing some great tenor, plus a bit of flute and soprano sax too – on a set of laidback tracks served up with a great quartet! George's horn is definitely the star attraction here – but the combo's got just the right sort of sensitive swing to bring out his best – Hugh Lawson on piano, Sirone on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – all sparking their own sense of creativity throughout, yet never overwhelming George's lead. A few tunes pick up a great groove, which leads to some especially wonderful lines from Adams – those bolder moments that we love from the early years, recast here in the space of a familiar song – on titles that include "Cry Me A River", "Moon River", "A Nightingale Sang In Berkely Square", "Going Home", and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". George AdamsParadise Space Shuttle ... LP
Timeless, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A tremendous moment for the great George Adams as a leader – a record that won the reedman widespread attention after some key work in the bigger groups of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus! Adams is a searing, soulful player right from the start – stepping out strongly on tenor at the kickoff of the record, but also blowing some flute with this moodier, more spiritual tone that really deepens our appreciation of his talents as a musician. The rest of the group is filled with similar spiritual energy – and includes Ron Burton on piano, Don Pate on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Azzedin Weston on percussion. The style is nicely different than some of George's later work with Don Pullen – maybe a bit more straightforward, but in a great way that really unlocks his voice as a leader – and titles include "Funk A Roonie Peacock", "Metamorphosis for Mingus", "Paradise Space Shuttle", and "Intentions". George AdamsSuite For Swingers ... LP
Horo (Italy), 1976. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A slightly confused album, but not without some nice moments! The set is one of a few that Adams recorded for the Horo label in Italy – and it features a quintet with Don Pullen on piano and keyboards, David Friesen on bass, Dannie Richmond on drums, and Afonso Vieira on percussion. The title track is kind of a messed-up avant number that really doesn't go anywhere, and which takes up all of side one. "Blues By The River" is an unfortunate blues tune that doesn't deliver either. BUT the album is capped off by one great number – the 15 minute "Melodic Rhapsody", a really wonderful mellow tune that mixes electric piano and tenor work, in a cool but soulfully spiritual style, similar to the best later Marion Brown work on Impulse. This track is great, and totally worth the album for us! LP, Vinyl record album

A trashy cover, but a great little record – one that's filled with wonderfully sensitive sounds from the team of George Adams and Don Pullen – working here in some really relaxed, soulful territory! The album's got a laidback feel that's a nice change from some of the more cerebral modes of both players – almost a bit more spontaneous than some of their other recordings together, with a different sort of spirit on each track, and a style that slides easily between different modes of jazz. Adams plays tenor and flute, and sings on one track – Pullen's on acoustic piano, and other players include Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Our favorite side of Gene Ammons' talents – summed up nicely in a 2LP set! Ammons wasn't the first tenor player to work with a Hammond organ, but once the format gained popularity, Gene made a wise move to take it up – and it became a pairing that forever defined the later years of his sound! The 2LP set brings together a nice blend of ballads, groovers, and funky tunes recorded for Prestige with organists Johnny Hammond Smith and Jack McDuff during the 60s – titles that include "Born To Be Blue", "Twistin The Jug", "In Sid's Thing", "Blue Room", "Water Jug", "Getting Around", "Angel Eyes", "Stormy Monday", "Velvet Soul", and "Down The Line". Ely ArcoverdeO Orgao Que Canta Boleros ... CD
RGE/Discobertas (Brazil), 1964. New Copy ... $13.99
A set that's a bit mellower than some of the other 60s records by Brazilian organist Ely Arcoverde – but one that's still got a very groovy sound overall! As you'd guess by the "boleros" in the title, most tunes are ballads – slow-steppers with a great late nite vibe, which gives Ely plenty of room to work all this cool magic on the keys of the electric organ – at a level that's somewhere between American jazz Hammond players, and maybe the more exotic modes of an artist like Korla Pandit! As with other records, Ely finds a way to "sing" through the keys – almost an early organ-driven version of vocoder material – and titles include "Que Sera De Ti", "O Divorcio", "Sonhar Contigo", "Abraca Me", and the side-long "Selecao De Boleros". Ely ArcoverdeO Orgao Que Canta Sambas Vol 2 ... CD
RGE/Discobertas (Brazil), 1963. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the weirdest, wildest organ work we've ever heard – and that's coming from folks with a record collection stuffed with Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, and even Sun Ra! Ely Arcoverde is a bit in the territory of Brazilian 60s organ contemporary Walter Wanderley – especially in the way that he mixes his melodies with samba rhythms – but he's also got a very different approach on the keyboard, and often uses the instrument to "sing" – in ways that are very much like the "canta" promised in the title! At some points, we'd swear that Ely was almost using an early variation of a vocoder – not that the sound is 80s, but that he gets this really cool "voice" out of the instrument – as it moves between percussion, occasional chorus vocals, and some nicely jazzy instrumentation. Titles include "O Morro Nao Tem Vez", "Cidade Maravilhosa", "Madame Fulana De Tal", "Samba Da Minha Terra", "Canta Maria", "Tem Bobo Pra Tudo", and "Agua Com Areia". CD

Kollington/Soul Jazz (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 32.99
An album of heavy righteous power from Alhaji Kollington Ayinla and his Fuji 78 ensemble – a group who bring a very different sound to this record than some of the more mainstream Afro Funk work of the Nigerian scene at the time! The group are heavily percussive, and also use their drums in these inflected ways that open up next to the vocals – yet they're also not afraid to throw in a bit of synth and keyboards, but with modes that are never trying to overwhelm the core fuji energy of the music – which really comes from the hard-driving percussion, and the rising of group vocals next to the lead of Ayinla – all in ways that almost have the righteous energy of prayer, but tuned here towards much more secular politics in the end. The whole record has a timeless power that's undeniable – and titles include "Pataki L'Omo", "To Ba Jisoro Mi", "Won Ti Gbe Oye Fun Mi", "Adio Shile", "E Ye Ika Se", and "Odu Titun De". The Beat Bronco Organ Trio are more than great enough at the core, but they also offer up some great surprises over the course of this fantastic full length album – including slight use of clavinet and mini-moog by Gabri Casanova, who mostly handles the Hammond in the lead – and guest work at a few spots from Chip Wickham on flute and electric piano! There's a few other players who drop in along the way – but the core groove here is from the trio, who not only replicate a 60s soul jazz vibe, but also move things through a deep funk legacy – maybe more in the mode of the Sugarman Three than a Don Patterson or Jack McDuff combo on Prestige – as there are rhythms and elements that pick up bits of 70s funk. A stunner of a record from the mighty Jorge Ben – and a record that catapulted the Brazilian singer to international fame at the time! Ben had already been making magic for almost a decade down in Brazil – and his compositions and grooves left an undeniable impact on the scene in the post-bossa years – but this album has Jorge really emerging as the global soul star he was destined to be – from his powerful stare on the cover, right down to the grit in the grooves! The sound here is a refinement of the samba soul mode that Ben had been brewing up from the late 60s onward – a skittish mix of older samba elements, American soul, and some slight fuller production that really comes into its own here – mixing all the acoustic elements at the core with just a slight electric flourish, but never losing its edge in the process – all to provide Jorge with a sublime backdrop for his really amazing vocals. The set's a monument in funky Brazilian soul – and it includes the huge hit "Taj Mahal", which still sounds great, even after all these years – plus loads of other gems that include "O Circo Chegou", "Domingo 23", "Fio Maravilha", "Paz E Arroz", "Morre O Burro Fico O Homem", and "Que Nega E Essa". A gem all the way through – and a record we'd never part with! CD
(Limited edition of 2000 copies – in a nice LP-styled sleeve!)

Universal (Brazil), 1964. Used ... $14.99
Amazing stuff! Jorge Ben never made a bad record in the 60s – and this is one of his best! The album's filled with tight jaunty numbers that mix big band samba arrangements with quickly strummed guitar, and Jorge's wonderfully raw vocals – all classic stuff for Jorge, but a style that we never tire of! Every track's a winner, and the album glides effortlessly from number to number, grooving along with a stunning mix of instruments, vocals, and this incredible echoey production. Titles include "Vou De Samba Com Voce", "Guerreiro Do Rei", "Descalco No Parque", "Gabriela", "Saida Do Porto", "Bicho Do Mato", and "Zope Zope". CD

Sigia (Brazil), 1986. Used ... $9.99
Smooth soulful work from Jorge – not as funky as his 70s albums, but still a great little record! The album's got a nicely compressed take on his samba soul sound, done in an 80s groove mode, which means that there's more keyboards and electric percussion than before, but still an adherence to strong vocals and choppy rhythms. And sure, it's not as great as his classic work, but the album's still pretty darn great – and if it was the first album by a new artist, the critics would be all over it! Titles include "Sasaci Perere", "Pancada De Amor", "Danca Que Isso E", "Procura Se Uma No", "Roberto Corta Ess", and "O Amante Vigilant". CD

Manteca (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $7.99
A nice little collection of work by one of Brazil's samba soul giants – with a selection of tunes that you don't always see on other collections! The focus here is on Jorge's post-Africa Brasil work – some of his more tightly produced work from the late 70s and early 80s, work that followed very much in the spirit of his mid 70s work for Philips, but which also pushed towards a straighter soul sound in some of the production. There's a total of 17 tracks in all – and the set's a great introduction to this period in Jorge's career, one that still had him grooving very strongly! Titles include "Eu Quero Ver A Rainha", "Minha Estrela E Do Oriente", "Olha A Pipa", "Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae", "Para Que Digladiar", "Berenice", "Senhora Dona Da Casa", and "A Banda Do Ze Pretinho". CD

Philips/Dusty Groove, 1969. Used ... $9.99
A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! Other tracks include "Criola", Cade Tereza", "Domingas", "Barbarella", "Quem Foi Que Roubou A Sopeira" and more. CD

A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy backings. Highlights include "No Sooner Said Than Done", which has some very weird processing on the guitar; "Full Compass", which has some nice hard drums; and "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams", a mellow moody track. George BensonBig Boss Band ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1990. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
George Benson more than earns the title on this one – given that most of the tracks feature backings from the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster – a great ensemble who really help keep things soulful throughout! Despite the date of the set, the feel here is a bit more classic than most of Benson's work from the time – as the group bring a full acoustic soul to the record – a swelling, swaying brace of horns that seems to push George's vocals a bit more than usual – past that simply sweet style that was the usual Benson bag. There's a range and depth here that's really surprising – a quality that goes past the hokey title, which might make you expect less from the record – and although there's a few brief moments that get slightly contemporary, these pass quickly in favor of a classic groove. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Without A Song", "Ready Now That You Are", "Basie's Bag", "Skylark", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing". CD

A sweet 70s collection of late 60s work from George Benson – tracks recorded in 1968 for Verve, originally from the albums Giblet Gravy and Goodies! The set list here really does a great job of picking out the best numbers – the kind of clean, lean tunes that were pushing Benson from his soul jazz roots towards a much bigger audience – yet still without any of the commerciality of later years to come. Players on the tracks include Herbie Hancock on piano, Billy Cobham on drums, Ron Carter on bass, and Johnny Pacheco on percussion – and arrangements are by Horace Ott and Tom McIntosh. Titles include "Billie's Bounce", "Low Down & Dirty", "Thunder Walk", "Doobie Doobie Blues", "What's New", and "I Remember Wes". LP, Vinyl record album

CTI/King (Japan), 1975. Used ... $12.99
An unusual assortment of work from the great George Benson – pulled together from other sessions for CTI Records – featuring one studio track, and four more live numbers! The studio tune is George's take on the Stax Records classic "Hold On I'm Coming" – which Benson sings with almost as much vocal intensity on his own as Sam & Dave brought to the original – followed by a tight solo that really matches the funky 70s vibe of the arrangements. Next are four more tracks from the Carnegie Hall sessions – one of his hardest-hitting albums of the time! In a way, the record returns George to his early years at CTI – particularly the album Beyond The Blue Horizon – as the set's got a stripped down smaller group, working in a tight blend of electric jazzy bits that's very nice! Ronnie Foster lays down some great keyboards on the set, Hubert Laws is on flute, and George himself plays a hollow body with a nice soulful tone – stretching out on some straight jazz on most cuts, but also hitting a few of his smoother notes from the mid 70s. Titles include "Sky Dive", "Octane", "Summertime", and "Gone". CD

Bossa IVForget Your Name ... LP
2019. New Copy ... $6.99
A charming, joyous batch of tunes from Bossa IV – not really the bossa-sounding project you might assume from the name and from the fact Dusty Groove is stocking it, but a timeless and melodic batch of indie rock we'd put up there some of of the best of out there. This is Chicagoan Matthew McGarry's third album as Bossa IV, and he continues to do nearly everything himself, and impressively so, bearing influences from the 60s onward, but he's got such a singular style that you can't pinpoint them directly. We don't stock a lot of contemporary rock at the ol' DG...Bossa IV is just that irresistible! Includes "Protest (Down Pat)", "Sudden Deafness", "Total Chaos", "Paper View", "Forever Numb", "Ethnograph (Ra CBE)", "Grim Reaper", "Karaoke (ACH)", "Versa" and "Forget Your Name". A really wonderful, very organic album from the duo of Anthony Braxton on reeds and Georg Grawe on piano – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of Braxton's other music of the time – and which maybe takes us back to the spirit of some of earliest work on the Chicago scene! Grawe's got a nicely pointed style of playing – notes that are free, but clear and distinct – which seems to almost produced a grittier style from Braxton at times, as he blows a range of instruments that include soprano sax, clarinet, alto, and flute. The titles are free of the more academic codes that Braxton usually brings to play, and the music is too – on selections that are simply titled "Duet 1", "Duet 2", and "Duet 3". CD

George Burton, 2020. New Copy ... $7.99
An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Imagine the joy you felt when you first heard the early records of Robert Glasper, and you'll get some of the energy this record can deliver – on titles that include "Finding", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "Reciprocity", "Third Prayer", "Finite Space", "Us", "Power", and "Turn". A mighty collaboration between Stanley Clarke & George Duke – working here in a pairing that refueled both of their careers for the 80s! In previous years, both Clarke and Duke had a penchant for really stretching out in complex, experimental modes – but here, they're playing in a relatively stripped-down and focused way – hitting some of the more soul-inspired sides of fusion at the time, although still without the slick or commercial feel of the rising GRP generation. Guitars figure heavily on a number of tracks, and vocals do too – sometimes in ways that are slightly too sweet and almost cloying. George ClintonDo Fries Go With That Shake/Scratch Medley – Do Fries Go With That Shake/Pleasures Of Exhaustion (Do It Til I Drop) ... 12-inch
Capitol, 1986. Very Good ... $3.99
Not quite up to par with "Atomic Dog" or any of his 70s output, this is still a respectable mid 80s commercial funk effort, with George kind of taking off on Cameo's take on his own sound. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Capitol sleeve.)
