Ad LibsPresenting The Ad Libs (purple vinyl pressing) (2018 Black Friday Release) ... LP
ORG, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $23.99
A full vinyl release by The Ad Libs – a group known for their classic singles of the 60s, but one who never issued a full-length album of their own! This great little set more than corrects that fact – by bringing together 9 rare singles for the Blue Cat label, plus a few previously unissued tracks – tracks that never made it onto vinyl back in the 60s! The issued singles alone are great – a beautiful blend of one gal and four guy singers, handled with a style that's on the rougher edge of the New York style of soul at the time. Titles include "On The Corner", "Boy From New York City", "Appreciation", "Oo Wee Oo Gee", "Johnny My Boy", "The Slime", "Down Home Girl", "If She Wants Him", "He Ain't No Angel", "Nothing Worse Than Being Alone", "Kicked Around", and "I'm Just A Down Home Girl". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoSpiritual (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" (And they wondered why they never got their songs on the radio!) LP, Vinyl record album

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoTutankhamun (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1974. New Copy ... $22.99 24.98
Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. Titles include "Tutankhamun", "The Ninth Room" and "Tthinitthedalen". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marion BrownPorto Novo (red vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Polydor/ORG, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". Johnny GriffinMan I Love (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Black Lion/ORG, 1967. New Copy ... $28.99 29.98
An astounding live set from Johnny Griffin – recorded at the famous Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, Dexter Gordon's famous home in the late 60s – but a place that was also a showcase for the new sort of energy that Griffin was bringing to his horn at the time! The record crackles with the kind of free energy of the best Montmartre sessions – long tracks and compelling solos, stretched-out versions of tunes you may recognize, but which are transformed nicely by Griff's great solo work – and by a rhythm section that features Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! Titles include "The Man I Love", "Blues For Harvey", "Sophisticated Lady", "Hush A Bye", and "Wee". LP, Vinyl record album

William HookerSymphonie Of Flowers ... CD
ORG, 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 11.98
A great album as a leader from the legendary William Hooker – and a fantastic reminder of how wonderful he can be in the spotlight! The set begins with some solo drum work from Hooker, then moves into bolder improvisations with an unnamed saxophonist and pianist (odd that the label didn't give us this information) – the latter of whom plays some very cool Sun Ra-like electric piano at one point! Hooker is clearly the star of the show, though – and begins with some almost-funky lines, something we've never heard before – then moves into the more familiar mode of improvisation that's made his work on other albums so great over the years. Titles include "Jazz", "Soul", "Hieroglyphics", "Chain Gangs", "Freedom Riders", and "Rastafarian". CD

Sun RaCalling Planet Earth ... LP
Black Lion/ORG, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Live brilliance from the Sun Ra Arkestra – a set recorded in Tivoli in 1971, with a mix of modes that has the Arkestra swinging from spiritual passages to some very outside moments as well – sometimes with a sense of texture that's extremely powerful! The first half of the set features a number of takes on "Discipline", mixed with "Love In Outer Space", "Satellites Are Spinning", and "Enlightenment" – as percussion seems higher in the mix than most other instruments, but in a very cool way. The second half features longer, more discrete tracks – including a righteous version of "Calling Planet Earth", the very outside "The Outers", and a return to rhythm on "Adventures In Outer Space". Sun RaSpaceways ... LP
ORG, 1966/1968. New Copy ... $21.99 23.98
First ever vinyl release of live material recorded in NYC in 1966 and 1968 by Sun Ra – really showing this influential era of Ra in a strong light – with a few pieces in 12-or-so piece Arkestra mode, and some great stripped down passages, too! The first side features two nine minute recordings, both beginning with melodic piano by Ra before opening up in wonderful ways. "Prelude And Shadow-Light World" is in classic cosmic jazz Arkestra mode, while "The Wind Speaks" builds with some incredible flute and strings. The other side kicks off with "We Sing This Song", led at first by some fairly straight forward group vocals, before Ra's fierce piano and some drums come in. "Outer Space Incorporated" is a grander cosmic jazz gem, building to a percussion heavy close. The short (but soaring) choral vocal, drums, bass, and piano gem "We Travel The Spaceways" is a perfect closer. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ornette ColemanEvening With Ornette Coleman Part 2 (180 gram transparent vinyl pressing) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
ORG, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most striking Ornette Coleman albums of the 60s – a set that came together because of an odd regulation, but which also resulted in some really wonderful music as well! The record documents a 1965 London concert by Ornette – but, in order to get a visa to visit the UK, Coleman had to come across as a "serious musician" – so on Part 1, he works with a very cool wind quartet that features added flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon! This set features the second half of the performance – a trio performance with Ornette on alto, but also some trumpet and some really amazing violin – next to Charles Moffett on percussion and David Izenzon on double bass. Titles include "Falling Stars", "Silence", "Ballad", "Happy Fool", and "Doughnuts". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Carl PerkinsDance Album (tri-color vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sun/ORG, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Carl Perkins may not be the most revolutionary talent in rock and roll – but damn, he's good – and every bit the worthy Sun Records contemporary of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis! Like those three giants, Perkins is a Tennessee cat who can really find his own personality in the studio – a hell of a singer, and a really rhythmic guitarist – stepping out with effortless ease on the kind of cuts that made Sun Records a legend right from the start! We'll be honest in saying that we love Perkins at just about every later point in his career – but he's completely on fire here, on early tracks that include "Blue Suede Shoes", "Sure To Fall", "Tennessee", "Only You", "Wrong Yo Yo", "Matchbox", "Boppin The Blues", "Gone Gone Gone", "Honey Don't", "Your True Love", and "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby". ✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneThere's A Riot Goin' On (SACD) ... CD
Epic/ORG, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from Sly and crew – moving way past the straight funk approach of earlier records, into a complicated crossover soul style that's filled with warmth and righteousness. Despite the political tone implied by the "riot" in the title and the co-option of the American flag on the cover, the album's strongest suit is its warmth and personal soul message – sometimes filled with politics, sure, but always sounding like a sexy love song, no matter how hard it tries to get righteous. Who cares, though – just get with the flow on great cuts like "Family Affair", "Luv N Haight", "Brave & Strong", "You Caught Me Smilin", and "Thank You For Talkin To Me Africa". Also features "There's A Riot Goin' On" – which runs for "0:00" minutes! CD

Brunswick/ORG, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! The band had always been great at love songs and uptempo numbers – but this record has them moving into more righteous area, picking up on some of the more socially conscious soul of their generation that had been working its way up the charts. The album features excellent production by Chi-Lite Eugene Record, who also wrote a lot of the material – plus arrangements by Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders. Great stuff all around, with the righteous social tunes "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to The People", "Trouble's A Comin", and "We Are Neighbors" – plus classic love songs "Have You Seen Her" and "Love Uprising", which are still kind of the band's strongest point. Loads more great stuff on this one, the album that helped the second wave of Chicago soul break out into the international market! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Freddie HubbardFirst Light ... LP
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet early CTI work from trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – the kind of groundbreaking electric jazz that really helped him find a new space in the 70s! The album follows strongly from Freddie's classic Red Clay set for CTI – and like that one, it features extended tracks that build beautifully as they roll on – taking Freddie's airy trumpet as the base, and layering in electric piano, flute, guitar, and percussion – plus some wonderfully subtle strings – used sparely, but in just the right way to underscore the wider vision of the record. Arrangements are by the mighty Don Sebesky – and other players include George Benson on guitar, Hubert Laws on flute, Phil Kraus on vibes, and Airto on percussion – plus Richard Wyands on the keys, making a rare CTI appearance here. Titles include a surprisingly great version of "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" which has some great breaks in the middle – plus "First Light", "Moment To Moment", and "Yesterday's Dreams". ✨✧ George Adams & Don PullenMetamorphosis (aka City Gates) ... LP
Timeless (Japan), 1983. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
George Adams and Don Pullen knock it out of the park on this one – finding great company in each other's presence, and really moving things forward in the process! The set begins with a long track titled "Mingus Metamorphosis", and that really sums up the spirit of the record – an 80s reworking of all the ideas that the players had learned from Mingus, but with an individual, personal sense that's all their own – and very different than some of the more standard modes of the Mingus Dynasty group that continued the legacy in a more direct manner. Adams is bold one minute, lyrical the next – and plays both tenor and flute – alongside Pullen on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Mingus Metamorphosis", "Samba For Now", "City Gates", "Thank You Very Much Mr Monk", and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen". LP, Vinyl record album

George Adams, Martin Hannibal Peterson & FriendsMore Sightings ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. Titles include "Soul Brothers", "Do We Know Where We Are Going", "Melanie", "More Sightings", and "Don't Take Your Love From Me". CD

A trashy cover, but a great little record – one that's filled with wonderfully sensitive sounds from the team of George Adams and Don Pullen – working here in some really relaxed, soulful territory! The album's got a laidback feel that's a nice change from some of the more cerebral modes of both players – almost a bit more spontaneous than some of their other recordings together, with a different sort of spirit on each track, and a style that slides easily between different modes of jazz. Adams plays tenor and flute, and sings on one track – Pullen's on acoustic piano, and other players include Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Some of the most important electro-acoustic music to come from the Brazilian scene in the 60s – recordings that are every bit as powerful as similar experiments from Europe at the time, particularly the revolutionary talents working in Paris! Jorge Antunes takes a big page from their book, and works with lots of electronic wave patterns, tape loops, and other effects – to create these sounds that often begin in more familiar postwar patterns from the academic world, but often move into much noisier territory – really pointing the way forward for the European underground of the post-punk generation. Works include "Valsa Sideral", "Contrapunctus Contra Contrapunctus", "Auto Retrato Sobre Paisaje Porteno", "Cinta Cita", and "Historia De Una Pueblo Por Nacer". LP, Vinyl record album

Rocafort (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $24.99 26.99
The Beat Bronco Organ Trio are more than great enough at the core, but they also offer up some great surprises over the course of this fantastic full length album – including slight use of clavinet and mini-moog by Gabri Casanova, who mostly handles the Hammond in the lead – and guest work at a few spots from Chip Wickham on flute and electric piano! There's a few other players who drop in along the way – but the core groove here is from the trio, who not only replicate a 60s soul jazz vibe, but also move things through a deep funk legacy – maybe more in the mode of the Sugarman Three than a Don Patterson or Jack McDuff combo on Prestige – as there are rhythms and elements that pick up bits of 70s funk. Drums are by Antonio Pax Alvarez and guitar is by Lucas De Mulder – and titles include "Hard Play", "Crispy Time", "Easy Baby", "Hey Hey", "Squirtly", "Under Pressure", "Road Trip", and "Electro Pi". A landmark recording that is one of Jorge Ben's best albums ever! Philips/Dusty Groove, 1972. New Copy ... $5.99 18.98
A stunner of a record from the mighty Jorge Ben – and a record that catapulted the Brazilian singer to international fame at the time! Ben had already been making magic for almost a decade down in Brazil – and his compositions and grooves left an undeniable impact on the scene in the post-bossa years – but this album has Jorge really emerging as the global soul star he was destined to be – from his powerful stare on the cover, right down to the grit in the grooves! The sound here is a refinement of the samba soul mode that Ben had been brewing up from the late 60s onward – a skittish mix of older samba elements, American soul, and some slight fuller production that really comes into its own here – mixing all the acoustic elements at the core with just a slight electric flourish, but never losing its edge in the process – all to provide Jorge with a sublime backdrop for his really amazing vocals. The set's a monument in funky Brazilian soul – and it includes the huge hit "Taj Mahal", which still sounds great, even after all these years – plus loads of other gems that include "O Circo Chegou", "Domingo 23", "Fio Maravilha", "Paz E Arroz", "Morre O Burro Fico O Homem", and "Que Nega E Essa". A gem all the way through – and a record we'd never part with! CD

Philips/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A fantastically soulful album from Jorge Ben – one of his greatest records ever, and a key part of Brazilian music in the 70s! The album marks an earthier shift for Jorge – a sound that's still rooted in the samba influences of the 60s, but which also takes on a bit more soul at the bottom – thanks to rhythmic contributions from Trio Mocoto, who work here famously to help Ben shape the overall feel of the set! There's still a bit of larger orchestrations at moments, but these are used sparingly just to sweeten the sound – leaving the main force of the music to come from Jorge's guitar, and the cuica, percussion, and tamborim of the trio. The vocals are wonderful too – slightly raspy, and with a bit more feeling than we ever remember Jorge having on record – sometimes a bit intimate, yet always with an undeniable presence throughout. One of those records that still sends chills up our spines, year after year – with tracks that include "Oba La Vem Ela", "Ze Canjica", "Pulo Pulo", "Apareceu Aparecida", "Terezinha", "Mulher Brasileira", "Forca Bruta", "O Telefone Tocou Novamente", and "Charles Junior". Philips/Dusty Groove, 1969. Used ... $11.99
A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! Other tracks include "Criola", Cade Tereza", "Domingas", "Barbarella", "Quem Foi Que Roubou A Sopeira" and more. CD

Verve, 1967. Used ... $12.99
Very groovy work from guitarist George Benson – and a set that really helped him make the transition from small group soul jazz to some of his more ambitious work to come! The album's still quite soulful and a bit funky at times – but it also features larger arrangements from the great Tom McIntosh – cast in a blend of modern rhythms, shades, and colors that really help open up Benson's sound. The approach is similar to that McIntosh was using with Bobby Timmons and Jack McDuff at the same time – tight backings, but still with plenty of room for the lead soloist – and Benson's got a great affinity for this sort of album. The tracks are a nice mix of originals and pop items – with cuts like "Sunny", "Thunder Walk", "Walk On By", "Giblet Gravy", and "Sack Of Woe". Plus, the CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Billie's Bounce", and 2 alternate versions of "What's New?". CD

Sweet 70s funk from George Benson – an album that's a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still free from the commercial polish of his later hits! Maestro David Matthews is at the helm for this session – and most numbers have a full backing from players who include some of the best of the CTI/Kudu generation – including Ronnie Foster and Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Joe Farrell on flute, Fred Wesley on trombone, Eric Gale on rhythm guitar, Dave Friedman on vibes, and Steve Gadd on drums – who manages to kick in a nicely funky undercurrent, even on some of the mellower numbers. George's guitar is filled with warmly chromatic hues – gliding away nicely on titles that include the slow funky "Em", plus "Siberian Workout", "Shell Of A Man", "Hold On I'm Coming", "One Rock Don't Make No Boulder", and "Theme From Good King Bad". George BensonLove Remembers ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1993. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Sweet stepping soul from George Benson – a batch of tracks that wraps up his wonderful vocals and guitar with some great contemporary rhythms! The vibe here is nicely laidback – never too smooth, nor some of the more commercial territory that Benson was trying for a decade before – and in a way, it's almost as if George has been digging some of the less mainstream soul sounds of the time, as he's hitting a sound that would certainly appeal to steppers in Chicago, or the indie soul and smooth jazz scene of the early 90s. Benson's got a great way of scatting lightly with his guitar, and there's a leanness to most of the tracks, despite a relatively full lineup of players. Titles include "I'll Be Good To You", "Got To Be There", "My Heart Is Dancing", "Love Remembers", "Come Into My World", "Somewhere Island", "Calling You", "Lovin On Borrowed Time", and "Love Of My Life". CTI/Friday Music, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99 33.99
A wonderfully wicked album – one that sold so many copies that it's sometimes hard to remember how great it is! George takes on all of Abbey Road – or just about all of it – as he runs through some of the most beautiful tracks The Beatles ever wrote, like "Golden Slumbers", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "The End", "Because", and "You Never Give Me Your Money". The whole thing's set to some great baroque jazzy arrangements by Don Sebesky, and George digs the whole thing so much that he even sings a bit – vocalizing in a cool chromatic way that really works well with his guitar playing, and which would soon transform into a very popular style on his records of the 70s. Keyboards are by Bob James and Herbie Hancock – and there's plenty of other great jazz players in the mix! LP, Vinyl record album

George Benson is no spring chicken – but damn, he sounds plenty darn youthful here – working at the Ronnie Scotts club in London with some tight jazz funk backing! Benson sings as much as solos on guitar – and the whole thing is a great throwback to the sound of his 70s records – both in terms of the choice of tunes, and the overall spirit – that undeniable charisma that pushed George from the soul jazz underground to superstardom – a quality that's never let up over the years. Titles include "The Ghetto", "Give Me The Night", "Love X Love", "Turn Your Love Around", "In Your Eyes", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cruise Control", "Affirmation", "Moody's Mood", and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight". George Benson & Jack McDuffGeorge Benson/Jack McDuff (New Boss Guitar of George Benson & Hot Barbeque) ... CD
Prestige, 1964/1965. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
A double-length package of organ/guitar greatness – and a set that features key 60s work by Hammond hero Jack McDuff and guitarist George Benson! First up is The New Boss Guitar Of George Benson – the first album ever cut by Benson as a leader, a cooker of a soul jazz set, recorded back when George was the guitarist in Jack McDuff's classic 60s quartet! The album's almost a McDuff Quartet one – since Jack's on Hammond and Red Holloway is on tenor – but the group's slightly different too, with the surprising additions of Montego Joe on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass! Benson's guitar is amazing throughout – sharp-edged and played with a tightness that's quite different than most of his later work – and titles include "Shadow Dancers", "The Sweet Alice Blues", "Just Another Sunday", "Easy Living", and "Rock A Bye". Next up is Hot Barbeque – one of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff! The combo here is great – with a young George Benson hard-wailing on guitar, cutting lines so fast and furious it's hard to believe – especially if you only know his later work. The legendary Joe Dukes is on drums – dancing all over the place under Brother Jack's great groovy solos – and Red Holloway completes the group on tenor sax! The title track's got a rare vocal refrain – with Jack shouting out "Hot Barbeque" over the organ – and other cuts include "Briar Patch", "Hippy Dip", "601 1/2 North Poplar", and "The Three Day Thang". ABC/Big Pink (South Korea), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
A great bit of work from the re-formed Blues Magoos – a new incarnation of the group that had a few early garage rock hits, and which on this set features some great work by Eric Kaz, who seems to add a hip singer-songwriter feel to the record. The group have clearly been listening to a lot of blues and blue eyed soul, but also seem to have picked up a jazzy edge too – one that shows up nicely on the album's use of vibes. These are heard to wonderful effect on the instrumental groover "Getting Off", the mellow swinging instrumental "Georgia Breakdown", and on the group's funky cover of Joe Cuba's great "El Pito – I'll Never Go Back To Georgia" CD

Lo BorgesDinamo ... CD
Deck Disk (Brazil), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
A really fantastic album from the great Lo Borges – and proof of that long-running adage about Brazilian singers – they never falter as they age, and most seem to be able to hold onto all that made them great in the first place – at a level that's very different from artists on the Anglo side of the spectrum! Lo first rose to prominence as part of the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – and his songwriting really helped propel Nascimento in the 70s, and was also the start of a great run of fantastic, but oft-overlooked (at least on our shores) records by Borges himself – a sublime legacy that's really continued here, in a set of well-penned songs that sparkle with all the many charms of Lo's key records in the 70s. Titles include "Dinamo", "O Caos Da Cidade", "Refugio", "Altajuda", "Lava Do Vesuvio", "Quantos Janeiros", and "Apontando O Norte". CD

Naphta (Brazil), 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The great Lo Borges first rose to fame as part of Milton Nascimento's corner club in the early 70s – and damn, if he doesn't still sound great after all of these years – maybe even more true to his roots than Milton in more recent recordings! Lo's got a hell of a way with a tune, and he works here with his brother Marcio, another member of the old corner club – on songs that are really well-penned, and have this captivating quality even if you can't understand the language – maybe at a level that wants you to learn Portuguese, just so you can unlock the magic of the way the words go together! As with much of Borges' recordings in recent decades, the approach is rock-based, but in an understated way – completely unique, and really transcendent – on titles that include "Terra Da Gado", "Muito Alem Do Fim", "Muito Querida", "Copo Cheio", "Vida Ribeirao", and "Rainha". A charming, joyous batch of tunes from Bossa IV – not really the bossa-sounding project you might assume from the name and from the fact Dusty Groove is stocking it, but a timeless and melodic batch of indie rock we'd put up there some of of the best of out there. This is Chicagoan Matthew McGarry's third album as Bossa IV, and he continues to do nearly everything himself, and impressively so, bearing influences from the 60s onward, but he's got such a singular style that you can't pinpoint them directly. We don't stock a lot of contemporary rock at the ol' DG...Bossa IV is just that irresistible! Includes "Protest (Down Pat)", "Sudden Deafness", "Total Chaos", "Paper View", "Forever Numb", "Ethnograph (Ra CBE)", "Grim Reaper", "Karaoke (ACH)", "Versa" and "Forget Your Name". Braden's on tenor, working alongside some guest tenor by David Newman – and the rest of the group features organ by either Jack McDuff or Larry Goldings – plus trumpet by Tom Harrell, guitar by Russell Malone, and some super-solid drum work by either Cecil Brooks or Winard Harper. George Burton, 2020. New Copy ... $7.99
An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Imagine the joy you felt when you first heard the early records of Robert Glasper, and you'll get some of the energy this record can deliver – on titles that include "Finding", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "Reciprocity", "Third Prayer", "Finite Space", "Us", "Power", and "Turn". ✨✧ George CablesWhy Not ... CD
Why Not (UK), 1975. Used ... $9.99
A brilliant Japanese album from George Cables – one that really has a different sort of vibe than his other 70s work in the US! The set was recorded in LA, but produced for the Japanese market – and as such, it seems to have a different focus than some of George's American dates – possibly a bit more groove at times, but also some warmly lyrical moments – balanced together beautifully at a level that rivals most of the best Japanese trio sessions of the 70s! Cables is working in a trio with Carl Burnett on drums and Tony Dumas on bass – but the overall scope of the album makes you feel as if there must be a much larger band present – as George skillfully directs the trio with the intensity and imagination of a hip soul jazz quintet or sextet – and his soaring, searching lines on piano easily fill the space of a half a dozen instruments. The groove is tight and soulful on all tracks, and titles include "Ebony Moonbeams", "Dark Side – Light Side", "Quiet Fire", "Why Not", and "Rita 1 & 2". CD

George ColemanGeorge Coleman – The Quartet ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 17.98
Tenorist George Coleman has a long legacy that stretches back decades in jazz – but here, he slides into a setting that most folks would associate with the work of saxophonist Eric Alexander – a quartet that features Harold Mabern on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums! The group's a rock-solid lineup that you've heard on many other records – but the presence of Coleman really changes up their sound – especially since George brings in all this complexity with his phrasing and timing, which then seems to get folded back on the way that the rhythm section reacts to his lead! The tracks are long, with lots of space for Coleman to stretch out – and the record may be one of the best that he's done in many years – with phrasing that really blows us away. Titles include "Paul's Call", "East 9th Street Blues", "I Wish You Love", "Triste", "Along Came Betty", and "Lollipops & Roses". CD

Reel To Real, 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Tremendous work from tenorist George Coleman – featured here in the sort of setting that really reminds us of his genius when allowed to really open up and blow! The tracks are long, and the material was recorded by the Left Bank Jazz Society – that Baltimore-based organization that's managed to capture important (and excellent) sessions over the years, including classics from Lee Morgan and Wynton Kelly. Coleman was on one of the Kelly dates, but is even better here as a leader – and works with an unusual group that includes Danny Moore on trumpet, Albert Dailey on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Harold White on drums – with nice use of trumpet that keeps the record from being very different than just a live date from a tenorist with rhythm section. Titles include long takes of "Joy Spring", "Afternoon In Paris", "Sandu", and "Body & Soul". CD

Dave Baby CortezDave Baby Cortez & His Happy Organ ... LP
Clock, 1960s. Very Good ... $4.99
Stomping organ instrumentals from Dave Baby Cortez – a great little batch of work for the Clock label at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s, all of which helped to really find a place for the organ in American pop and soul! Cortez brought a style to the instrument that was as wild as some of the guitarists and saxophonists of his time – a mode that wasn't really jazz, was a bit R&B, and which helped give the organ a much leaner sound than some of its "skating rink" uses in pop during the decade before. Dave's clean style is a great fit for the jaunty, leaping rhythms of these tunes – with a dozen numbers in all, and titles that include "Piano Shuffle", "The Happy Organ", "Catnip", "Mardi Gras", "The Whistling Organ", "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie", "Red Sails In The Sunset", and "Hurricane". Wonderfully freewheeling improvisations between a duo we've never heard before – saxophonist George Davidson and drummer Mitchell King – really pulling out some old school energy in this series of well-done free jazz duets! Davidson sometimes has a deeper current of soul in his horn, which almost evokes an earlier ESP version of avant jazz – and King has this way of building up formations on the drum kit, then setting them off in increasing intensity – which is often well-balanced by the grounded explorations of the tenor! Very nice work by a duo who follow the best sides of their inspirations – on titles that include "In Praise Of Fakirs", "Message To Eden Ango", "Aurora Vibration", "Mixed Elixer", "Madzub's Logic", and "Where Is Dhat". Sam Records (France), Mid 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... About September 15, 2021
Amazing music by one of our favorite saxophone players of all time – captured here at the height of his 60s genius on the European scene! The tracks here have never been issued at all – but stand as a perfect complement to the killer MPS/Saba albums by Nathan Davis – and are served up with a similar blend of soulful hardbop and modernist edges – qualities that are already present in the fantastic phrasing of Davis on tenor and flute, pushed even further by the equally great work of French piano legend Georges Arvanitas! Although Arvanitas could be out when he wanted, he could also swing like the best of them – and his pairing with Davis here is perfect, and really brings out both the soul and edge in both players – especially in the company of George's fantastic rhythm duo of Charles Saudrais on drums and Jacky Samson on bass. The set's full of other surprises, too – including a bit of organ from Arvanitas, and an appearance by Jack Dieval – and the whole thing is beautifully recorded by French Radio. Tracks are all long – and include "Mid Evil Dance", "Blues For Southeast Asia", "The Hip Walk", "Rules Of Freedom", "A5", "The Thing", "Love Ye The Neighbor", "Nathalie's Dance", and "Yesterdays" in both flute and tenor versions. There's a really great pairing going on here – the always-amazing sound of Pierre Dorge's New Jungle Orchestra, and the tenor of Stephen Riley – a guest who's brought into the fold after a successful European tour with the group, and a perfect match for their ever-inventive sound! Dorge's guitar sets the scene and colors the music right from the start – with plenty of the blue elements you might expect in the title – and Riley seems as if he's challenging all the other group members to do their best with the strength of his own tenor – a lineup that includes Tobias Wiklund on trumpet, Kennet Agerlhom on trombone, Jakob Mygind on tenor and soprano, Anders Banke on tenor and bass clarinet, and Irene Becker on piano and keyboards. A sweet bit of modern funk from George Duke – working here in a mode that's definitely tighter and more soul-based than his trippier albums of the early 70s – but also in a groove that's pretty darn sweet! George wonderfully blends together his jazz roots and some of the wider soul styles he'd helped forge on the California scene – keeping things smooth, but never slick – bringing in some nice acoustic percussion alongside the album's overall electric sound. A number of cuts have vocals, and George handled both production and arrangements – on tracks that include the P-Funky "Dukey Stick", an old sample from way back – plus "Movin On", "The Future", "We Give Our Love", and "Percussion Interlude". MPS/Promising (Germany), 1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Titles include "Capricorn", "The Opening", "Psychosomatic Dung", "North Beach", "Faces In Reflection", "Maria Tres Filhos", and "Da Somba". CD

George DukeGuardian Of The Light ... CD
Epic, 1983. Used ... $8.99
A funky concept album from George Duke – and one that's filled with some mighty nice grooves! Guardians Of The Light is a full-on "musical fantasy" – with the story line laid out in the liner notes, yet still a bit difficult to follow – but we can't fault him for that when it's done in his masterful R&B-fusion-funk approach! George sings on all cuts, but he also gets some stellar vocal assistance from Jeffrey Osborne, Portia Griffin, and Patti Austin. The record also has some surprisingly sweet mellow moments that bring a deeper level of spacey soul to the out-there concept – those laidback lines that George could always do better than anyone else! Titles include "Born To Love You", "You Are The Light", "Reach Out", "Give Me Your Love", "Stand", "Soon", and "Fly Away". CD

George DukeMaster Of The Game (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A late 70s classic from jazzy funk master George Duke! Master Of The Game is an excellent mix of jazz, smooth soul, and Latin riffing – really a perfect blend of styles that shows not only how far George's sound had progressed throughout the 70s, it also charts the development of the California scene during the late 70s. George has musical help from Ray Obeido, Roland Bautista, and Sheila E – plus vocals by Lynn Davis, Josie James, and Napoleon Brock. The tracks have a smooth sound that works perfectly with Duke's best keyboard approaches – subduing his tenency to "rock out" a bit, but bringing forward his classic ability to hit a stone mellow groove. Titles include "I Want You For Myself", "Every Little Step I Take", "Look What You Find", "I Love You More", "Dog Man", and "Games". This Soulmusic.com edition includes 2 bonus tracks: "I Want You For Myself (US Single Edit) and "Every Little Step I Take (US Single Edit)". CD

George DuningWorld Of Suzie Wong ... LP
RCA, 1960. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland". Towards the end of the soundtrack, some cuts have a more orchestral feel, and this is in keeping with the change of mood in the film. LP, Vinyl record album

George Duning/Ned WashingtonNaked City ... LP
Colpix, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $39.99
One of the greatest albums of crime jazz ever! But even cooler than that, the whole thing's got narration by John McIntire, very much in the spirit of the crime drama Naked City – filmed in New York in verite style. The music is in that late 50s TV crime mode, but the narration really makes it come alive even more – and a number of tracks even break into vocal numbers, with singing by either Joann Greer or James Darren – but the narration is one of the best parts, as it really recaptures the moody feel of the excellent show! Tracks include "This Is The Naked City", "City Within A City", "He Plays It Cool", "Jazz Chase", and "From the Top Of The Tower". LP, Vinyl record album

Fabio Fabor (Fabio Borgazzi)Pape Satan (180 gram colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Hard/Beatball (Korea), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 34.98
A really dark little sound library album – but maybe that's what you would have guessed from a record that has satan in the title! The music here is almost a stripped-down, compressed approach to some of the territory that Goblin were bringing to their early soundtracks – lots of keyboards, guitar, and other electric elements – used in styles that move between spare and moody, to more compressed and intense – the latter especially on songs that pick up the rhythms a bit, but in a way that's far from the more familiar post-disco grooves of the Italian slasher scene. Fabio Fabor wrote and performed the entire set – with instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, Arp, and vocoder – on titles that include "Dies Irae", "Stige", "Trillo De Diavolo", "Dalle Sirene", "Diabolic Love", "Caronte", "Segno Di Fuoco" "Ad Inferos", and "Acheron". Georgie FameWalking Wounded – Live At Ronnie Scotts ... CD
Go Jazz, 1998. Used ... $13.99
The great Georgie Fame hardly sounds wounded here – as the singer's in the middle of a great return to form in the 90s – a decade that saw him cutting some tremendous albums like this! Fame's in his home turf of London – working with a small combo at Ronnie Scott's, and turning in songs that have a perfect blend of blues and soul roots mixed with Georgie's unique jazzy inflections – at a level that's even more sophisticated than his work in the early days! The group is great too – with Anthony Kerr on vibes, Guy Barker on trumpet, Alan Skidmore on tenor, and Peter King on alto – and Fame sings tracks that include "Cape Cuckoo", "If You Live", "Eros Hotel", "Abide With Me", "The Woodshed", "Zavolo", and "It Happened To Me/My Buddy". Adam Forkelid/Georg Riedel/Jon FaltReminiscence ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2018. Used ... $6.99
This might be the first we're ever hearing from pianist Adam Forkelid – and given the sound of the album, we hope we'll be hearing a lot more for years to come! Forkelid has this wonderful approach to the piano – very bold, powerful chords – even in the mellower moments – almost as if he's got these giant hands that can easily encompass the keyboard, and bring forth whatever warm sounds he likes – often with a blocky vibe that almost feels as if he was trained on Fender Rhodes, then moved to the acoustic piano! The group's also got superb work on bass from Georg Reidel – whose sound is as deep as Forkelid's – and drums by Jon Falt. All tunes are originals by the pianist – and tracks include "Cadence", "Play Theme", "New Beginning", "Round Montecristo", and "Reminiscence". CD

George FreemanBirth Sign ... LP
Delmark, 1972. Very Good+ ... $28.99
A cooking little album from guitarist George Freeman – his first album as a leader, recorded during a brief initial period of fame at the start of the 70s! The album's got a stripped-down, very groovy feel – one that takes off from some of Freeman's 60s work with Groove Holmes – but which puts George center stage, and allows for plenty of examples of his amazing tone and phrasing on the guitar! The core group is a trio – with Sonny Burke on organ and Billy Mitchell on drums – and Freeman's more famous brother Von joins in on tenor sax on a good portion of the tracks – playing in a soul jazz mode that's arguably better than that used on his Atlantic debut, recorded right around the same time. One more track features an even more unusual lineup – with Lester Lashley on trombone, Robert Pierce on organ, and Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, making one of his few appearances on record of this type! But the real star of the set throughout is George Freeman – playing the electric guitar with a quality that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a nitty, gritty tone that's almost a direct heir of T-Bone Walker, but a lot jazzier overall! Titles include the great funky number "Must Be Must Be", plus "Hoss", "Cough it Up", "Mama Papa Brother", "Birth Sign", "My Ship", and "My Scenery". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Lincoln Ave pressing in a textured cover, which has a cut corner.)
