Art Ensemble Of ChicagoSpiritual (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" (And they wondered why they never got their songs on the radio!) LP, Vinyl record album

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoTutankhamun (transparent blue vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. Titles include "Tutankhamun", "The Ninth Room" and "Tthinitthedalen". LP, Vinyl record album

Albert AylerVibrations (Freedom) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". A wonderful precursor to the ESP years – and equally great! LP, Vinyl record album

ORG, 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A great album as a leader from the legendary William Hooker – and a fantastic reminder of how wonderful he can be in the spotlight! The set begins with some solo drum work from Hooker, then moves into bolder improvisations with an unnamed saxophonist and pianist (odd that the label didn't give us this information) – the latter of whom plays some very cool Sun Ra-like electric piano at one point! Hooker is clearly the star of the show, though – and begins with some almost-funky lines, something we've never heard before – then moves into the more familiar mode of improvisation that's made his work on other albums so great over the years. Titles include "Jazz", "Soul", "Hieroglyphics", "Chain Gangs", "Freedom Riders", and "Rastafarian". CD

A classic Sun Ra set from the late 60s – recorded in New York in 1968, and featuring a lineup that includes Kwami Hadi on trumpet, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor and drums, and Pat Patrick on baritone and flute – all classic players who are the height of their most expressive powers here! The sound is quite "out" overall – really jamming in an almost free jazz sort of way at times – showing the growing boldness and confidence of the Arkestra, as they keep ahead of the pack of all the younger artists they've inspired by this point in their career. Really great work from The Viscaynes – a unique mixed-race band from the northern end of the Bay Area scene at the start of the 60s – and one that provided an early launching pad for the talents of the legendary Sly Stewart! The group sound different than Sly's Family Stone, but have a similar role in soul music during their own period – male and female voices coming together with a great love of doo wop and early group soul modes, often working with arrangements by the young Stewart, who also adds in plenty of guitar to the mix as well. The tunes have much more of an east coast feel than you'd guess – very much in the best Philly street corner vibe – and titles include "You've Forgotten Me", "Help Me With My Broken Heart", "Yellow Moon", "You're My Only Love", "A Long Time Alone", "Heavenly Angel", and "Uncle Sam Needs You". George Adams & Don PullenCity Gates ... LP
Timeless (Netherlands), 1983. Near Mint- ... $16.99
George Adams and Don Pullen knock it out of the park on this one – finding great company in each other's presence, and really moving things forward in the process! The set begins with a long track titled "Mingus Metamorphosis", and that really sums up the spirit of the record – an 80s reworking of all the ideas that the players had learned from Mingus, but with an individual, personal sense that's all their own – and very different than some of the more standard modes of the Mingus Dynasty group that continued the legacy in a more direct manner. Adams is bold one minute, lyrical the next – and plays both tenor and flute – alongside Pullen on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Mingus Metamorphosis", "Samba For Now", "City Gates", "Thank You Very Much Mr Monk", and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen". LP, Vinyl record album

One of those key records that has George Adams and Don Pullen reinventing expectations of jazz for the 80s – both musicians with plenty of ear for the outside, but also coming back home with a well-rounded, deeply-rooted approach that's crucial in taking the American jazz legacy another step forward! Like some of their similar contemporaries, who could also be avant at times, and straight at others – Adams and Pullen have no concern with setting themselves in one camp or another – and not only flesh out the spirit of the record with both of those aspects of their playing, but also have some surprisingly bluesy undercurrents at times. The group features George Adams on tenor, Don Pullen on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums – and titles include "Decisions", "Triple Over Time", "I Could Really For You", "Message Urgent", and "Trees & Grass & Things". Bob AllenGeorge Jones – The Life & Times Of A Honky Tonk Legend – Updated Edition ... Book
Backbeat Books, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99 24.99
George Jones was a country singer with a hell of a voice, and a hell of a lot of ups and downs in his life – a fair bit of issues that were brought on by his lifestyle and upbringing, all of which had an undeniable impact on the emotional strength of his music! Writer Bob Allen chronicles all these many aspects of George's life and career – with historical details that really match the wealth of Jones' deep recorded catalog – and which follow him through early raw sounds on Starday/Mercury, to his mainstream fame on United Artists and Musicor in the 60s, to his emergence as the key singer of heartbreaking songs in the 70s! George's voice changed often over the years, and he always found a way to make the music match – an aspect that Allen really understands as he keeps up with Jones' success and struggles. This new edition includes a postscript – and is 337 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Book

Ely ArcoverdeO Orgao Que Canta Boleros ... CD
RGE/Discobertas (Brazil), 1964. New Copy ... $18.99
A set that's a bit mellower than some of the other 60s records by Brazilian organist Ely Arcoverde – but one that's still got a very groovy sound overall! As you'd guess by the "boleros" in the title, most tunes are ballads – slow-steppers with a great late nite vibe, which gives Ely plenty of room to work all this cool magic on the keys of the electric organ – at a level that's somewhere between American jazz Hammond players, and maybe the more exotic modes of an artist like Korla Pandit! As with other records, Ely finds a way to "sing" through the keys – almost an early organ-driven version of vocoder material – and titles include "Que Sera De Ti", "O Divorcio", "Sonhar Contigo", "Abraca Me", and the side-long "Selecao De Boleros". Ely ArcoverdeO Orgao Que Canta Sambas Vol 2 ... CD
RGE/Discobertas (Brazil), 1963. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the weirdest, wildest organ work we've ever heard – and that's coming from folks with a record collection stuffed with Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, and even Sun Ra! Ely Arcoverde is a bit in the territory of Brazilian 60s organ contemporary Walter Wanderley – especially in the way that he mixes his melodies with samba rhythms – but he's also got a very different approach on the keyboard, and often uses the instrument to "sing" – in ways that are very much like the "canta" promised in the title! At some points, we'd swear that Ely was almost using an early variation of a vocoder – not that the sound is 80s, but that he gets this really cool "voice" out of the instrument – as it moves between percussion, occasional chorus vocals, and some nicely jazzy instrumentation. Titles include "O Morro Nao Tem Vez", "Cidade Maravilhosa", "Madame Fulana De Tal", "Samba Da Minha Terra", "Canta Maria", "Tem Bobo Pra Tudo", and "Agua Com Areia". CD

Kollington/Soul Jazz (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
An album of heavy righteous power from Alhaji Kollington Ayinla and his Fuji 78 ensemble – a group who bring a very different sound to this record than some of the more mainstream Afro Funk work of the Nigerian scene at the time! The group are heavily percussive, and also use their drums in these inflected ways that open up next to the vocals – yet they're also not afraid to throw in a bit of synth and keyboards, but with modes that are never trying to overwhelm the core fuji energy of the music – which really comes from the hard-driving percussion, and the rising of group vocals next to the lead of Ayinla – all in ways that almost have the righteous energy of prayer, but tuned here towards much more secular politics in the end. The whole record has a timeless power that's undeniable – and titles include "Pataki L'Omo", "To Ba Jisoro Mi", "Won Ti Gbe Oye Fun Mi", "Adio Shile", "E Ye Ika Se", and "Odu Titun De". Free-flowing magic from Italian bassist Giorgio Azzolini – hardly the Spanish-sounding album you might guess from the title – and instead, some of the best Italian modern jazz work we've ever heard! The group here is tremendous – and features Sergio Fanni on trumpet, Eraldo Volonte on tenor and soprano sax, and Franco D'Andrea on piano – all working beautifully with Azzolini's round, warm basslines guiding them through the tunes – a pulsating force that gives the album a tremendous sense of rhythm and humanity. The tracks are all quite long, but never as free or out as some of the work to come on the Italian Dire label – and Azzolini's got a great way of pulling the group together with force, then really letting them loose to do their own thing! A fantastic porn soundtrack from the Canadian scene at the start of the 70s – a wicked little record from the time when even a schlocky movie could be trusted to have some pretty great music in the mix! The styles here echo some of the modes in the Vampyros Lesbos world of Jess Franco films – funky drums, great organ lines, and plenty of trippy guitar – but there's also the added use of harmony vocals on a few cuts, with female singers who give the whole thing a warmly joyous quality, and really sets the whole thing apart from the rest! The record's got a great sense of variety, including some really cool distorted moog on one track – and titles include "Felicia Nova", "Emmene Moi", "Harizap", "Chanson Pour Candy", "Cago 9", "Sans Raison", "Ouvre Ton Ame", and "Je Ne T'Attendrai Pas". Timeless work by Georgia bluesman Cecil Barfield – material recorded in the mid 70s, issued in the 21st Century – but done with a quality that could go back to the 78rpm generation! Barfield has this amazing vocal style – strongly inflected at times, with this warble that makes for a strong musical element next to his acoustic guitar – almost Malian at times, and very different than any other blues singer we can think of. The recording quality is excellent – clear, clean, and very unadorned – and titles include "Love Blues", "Tell Me Rider", "Captain Had A Bulldog", "Big Legged Woman", "Five Long Years", "Root Blues", and "Talk To Your Daughter". Make no mistake, the album's definitely a jazz one – but George brings up the twang a bit on some of his phrasing, which also includes electric bass and banjo too – and the group features a second rhythm guitar, acoustic bass, and drums – which leaves plenty of room for fantastic interplay on the strings! The feel is almost like a steel guitar jazz album – and titles include "Rockabilly Boogie", "Jolly Joe Clark", "Rockin The Weasel", "Chicken In The Rough", "Shornin Bread', and "Arky Travels Again". The Beat Bronco Organ Trio are more than great enough at the core, but they also offer up some great surprises over the course of this fantastic full length album – including slight use of clavinet and mini-moog by Gabri Casanova, who mostly handles the Hammond in the lead – and guest work at a few spots from Chip Wickham on flute and electric piano! There's a few other players who drop in along the way – but the core groove here is from the trio, who not only replicate a 60s soul jazz vibe, but also move things through a deep funk legacy – maybe more in the mode of the Sugarman Three than a Don Patterson or Jack McDuff combo on Prestige – as there are rhythms and elements that pick up bits of 70s funk. Drums are by Antonio Pax Alvarez and guitar is by Lucas De Mulder – and titles include "Hard Play", "Crispy Time", "Easy Baby", "Hey Hey", "Squirtly", "Under Pressure", "Road Trip", and "Electro Pi". The backings show Ben picking up some modern soul elements from the US scene of the time – but these are also mixed with some rougher, rhythmic styles that are definitely Brazilian – which makes for a really compelling blend – quite similar to the samba and soul mix of Jorge's 70s records, but tuned towards the ears of a different generation overall. A stunner of a record from the mighty Jorge Ben – and a record that catapulted the Brazilian singer to international fame at the time! Ben had already been making magic for almost a decade down in Brazil – and his compositions and grooves left an undeniable impact on the scene in the post-bossa years – but this album has Jorge really emerging as the global soul star he was destined to be – from his powerful stare on the cover, right down to the grit in the grooves! The sound here is a refinement of the samba soul mode that Ben had been brewing up from the late 60s onward – a skittish mix of older samba elements, American soul, and some slight fuller production that really comes into its own here – mixing all the acoustic elements at the core with just a slight electric flourish, but never losing its edge in the process – all to provide Jorge with a sublime backdrop for his really amazing vocals. The set's a monument in funky Brazilian soul – and it includes the huge hit "Taj Mahal", which still sounds great, even after all these years – plus loads of other gems that include "O Circo Chegou", "Domingo 23", "Fio Maravilha", "Paz E Arroz", "Morre O Burro Fico O Homem", and "Que Nega E Essa". A gem all the way through – and a record we'd never part with! CD

Philips/Verve, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! Other tracks include "Criola", Cade Tereza", "Domingas", "Barbarella", "Quem Foi Que Roubou A Sopeira" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

One of Jorge Ben's greatest albums – a groundbreaking blend of samba and soul that forever went onto transform the face of Brazilian music! The record works off the groove set down by Jorge's earlier hit "Mas Que Nada" (which appears on another LP), and takes the blend of bossa, samba, and jazz, and infuses it with a sense of folksy soul delivered by Jorge's raspy vocals and acoustic guitar work. The combination of styles works perfectly – and every track on the album sparkles with a sense of excitement and new musical discovery that will probably blow away most of the recent records you've bought for your collection! Searing samba soul from Jorge Ben – one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album's got a slightly fuller feel than some of Ben's other work of the time – never slick, but with backings balanced nicely against his own raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – sweetening things up with a bit of the strings you'd find on Forca Bruta, but with a hint of the soul to come on Africa Brasil! The balance is great – thanks to arrangers Osmar Milito, Darcy De Paulo, and Hugo Bellard – and as usual, Jorge's vocals are the main attraction – dipping, turning, and rising with this really unique, personal feel – Ben-like brilliance at its brightest. The whole thing's wonderful – a key gem from the Philips years – and titles include "Cinco Minutos", "Zumbi", "Brother", "Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas", "Errare Humanum Est", "Menina Muler Da Pele Preta", "Hermes Tri", and "O Namorado Da Viuva". ✨✧ George BensonBig Boss Band ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1990. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
George Benson more than earns the title on this one – given that most of the tracks feature backings from the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster – a great ensemble who really help keep things soulful throughout! Despite the date of the set, the feel here is a bit more classic than most of Benson's work from the time – as the group bring a full acoustic soul to the record – a swelling, swaying brace of horns that seems to push George's vocals a bit more than usual – past that simply sweet style that was the usual Benson bag. There's a range and depth here that's really surprising – a quality that goes past the hokey title, which might make you expect less from the record – and although there's a few brief moments that get slightly contemporary, these pass quickly in favor of a classic groove. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Without A Song", "Ready Now That You Are", "Basie's Bag", "Skylark", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing". CD

Paul Winley, Early 70s/1978. New Copy ... $4.99 10.98
Wild and mysterious stuff! This album is sort of a repackaged version of the legendary Harlem Underground album – a great lost funk album from the mid-70s that listed George Benson as a player in the group, but one that Benson claims that he never played on! The time of this release coincided with Benson's big hit years in the 70s – so the package is a bit of a cash-in project – but the grooves here are a lot harder-hitting than anything George recorded for Warner or Columbia – really gritty funk that's totally great throughout! Other players include Dave Baby Cortez on organ, Reuben Wilson on keyboards, and Willis Jackson on tenor – and Ann Winley sings on one track, the great "Fed Up", which has a really bad-rapping feel! Other titles include the classic break track "Smokin' Cheeba Cheeba" – plus a few smokin' organ/guitar wailers, like "Loose Joints" and "Overture Erotic", both of which are nice enough to warrant this separate release! Other tracks include "Erotic Moods" and "Sweet Taste Of Love". CD

✨✧ George BensonLove Remembers ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1993. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet stepping soul from George Benson – a batch of tracks that wraps up his wonderful vocals and guitar with some great contemporary rhythms! The vibe here is nicely laidback – never too smooth, nor some of the more commercial territory that Benson was trying for a decade before – and in a way, it's almost as if George has been digging some of the less mainstream soul sounds of the time, as he's hitting a sound that would certainly appeal to steppers in Chicago, or the indie soul and smooth jazz scene of the early 90s. Benson's got a great way of scatting lightly with his guitar, and there's a leanness to most of the tracks, despite a relatively full lineup of players. Titles include "I'll Be Good To You", "Got To Be There", "My Heart Is Dancing", "Love Remembers", "Come Into My World", "Somewhere Island", "Calling You", "Lovin On Borrowed Time", and "Love Of My Life". Provogue, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Guitar legend George Benson pays tribute to the music of New Orleans – and also hearkens back to his earliest years in R&B, before he rose to jazz fame in the 60s! George sings as much as he plays guitar here – working in a tight combo that's heavy on soul styles – and most tunes are remakes of Nola classics, mixed with some other Chuck Berry songs, done in a more contemporary mode. The set's a fair bit grittier than most of Benson's recent recordings, and also has a tight horn section too – on titles that include "You Can't Catch Me", "Ain't That A Shame", "Blue Monday", "How You've Changed", "Walking To New Orleans", "I Hear You Knocking", and "Havana Moon". CTI, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $8.99
One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. The record was put together by Don Sebesky, and it's a lot more high concept than some of George's earlier work – and proof that he was a totally great player who just needed a push in the right direction to find his own vibe. Other players include Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Airto – and titles include "California Dreaming", "El Mar", "White Rabbit", and "Little Train". LP, Vinyl record album

George Benson & Joe FarrellBenson & Farrell ... LP
CTI, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $5.99
A genius pairing of two top CTI Records talents in the 70s – the sweet guitar of George Benson and the amazing reed talents of Joe Farrell – both players who recorded in very different modes for the label, and who come out here sounding even more different when working together! There's certainly some of the tightness of Benson's records, but also maybe a bit more open flow, too – and Farrell blows flutes and soprano sax, with a quality that's lyrical but powerful – almost bringing a Bobbi Humphrey sort of energy to the tunes at times, amidst these strong soulful arrangements from David Matthews! Yet even Matthews is nicely different – not as all-out R&B-inflected as on his Kudu productions, and nicely laidback – really letting the soloists take off on tunes that include "Old Devil Moon", "Camel Hump", "Flute Song", and "Beyond The Ozone". Lo BorgesRio Da Lua ... CD
Deck Disk (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
Fantastic work from Lo Borges – the legendary Brazilian singer that we've loved since his first "corner club" work with Milton Nascimento in the 70s – and who looks as if he hasn't aged a bit in the photo included with the album! Borges was always one of the strongest Brazilian songwriters of his generation – and a sophisticated, subtle singer whose approach was always just right for his words – an approach that hasn't changed a bit, as Lo works here with older musical partner Nelson Angelo, whose help was so important on his first self-titled album from 1972! Backing is by a small group, nicely under-produced – and all songs are originals by Borges and Angelo, with titles that include "Rio Da Lua", "Profeta, "No Caminho", "Em Outras Cancoes", "Foto 3 x 4", "Antes Do Tempo", and "Partimos". Bossa IVForget Your Name ... LP
2019. New Copy ... $12.99
A charming, joyous batch of tunes from Bossa IV – not really the bossa-sounding project you might assume from the name and from the fact Dusty Groove is stocking it, but a timeless and melodic batch of indie rock we'd put up there some of of the best of out there. This is Chicagoan Matthew McGarry's third album as Bossa IV, and he continues to do nearly everything himself, and impressively so, bearing influences from the 60s onward, but he's got such a singular style that you can't pinpoint them directly. We don't stock a lot of contemporary rock at the ol' DG...Bossa IV is just that irresistible! Includes "Protest (Down Pat)", "Sudden Deafness", "Total Chaos", "Paper View", "Forever Numb", "Ethnograph (Ra CBE)", "Grim Reaper", "Karaoke (ACH)", "Versa" and "Forget Your Name". Okka Disk, 1991/1997. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 13.99
A really wonderful, very organic album from the duo of Anthony Braxton on reeds and Georg Grawe on piano – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of Braxton's other music of the time – and which maybe takes us back to the spirit of some of earliest work on the Chicago scene! Grawe's got a nicely pointed style of playing – notes that are free, but clear and distinct – which seems to almost produced a grittier style from Braxton at times, as he blows a range of instruments that include soprano sax, clarinet, alto, and flute. The titles are free of the more academic codes that Braxton usually brings to play, and the music is too – on selections that are simply titled "Duet 1", "Duet 2", and "Duet 3". CD

A really tremendous record from the Lagos scene of the 70s – a set that's completely sharp from beginning to end, and which has the same sort of side-long jamming that you'd find on the best records by Fela Kuti at the time! King Bucknor's billed as "The Black Isaiah Of Africa" – and he's definitely got a strong spiritual core in his message – which is carried out in lyrics that begin to flow only after the Afrodisk Beat Organisation get things moving – really kicking up the groove with fast-riffing and very funky guitar over basslines that bubble along at a mighty quick pace – and which also get these completely great tenor solos from Dele Okonkwo, a player we'd like to know more. The set features two long tracks – "Soyoyo" and "Katakata" – both completely superb! LP, Vinyl record album

George Burton, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Imagine the joy you felt when you first heard the early records of Robert Glasper, and you'll get some of the energy this record can deliver – on titles that include "Finding", "Gratitude", "Spirit", "Reciprocity", "Third Prayer", "Finite Space", "Us", "Power", and "Turn". High Note, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A really fluid trio set from pianist George Cables – the kind of record that reminds us all over again how great he really is! The group's an excellent one – with superb work on bass from Essiet Essiet and drums from Victor Lewis – both players who have this instant groove, but without hitting you over the head at all – a perfect balance to match the lyricism that's always inherent in George's piano work! But Cables is highly rhythmic here, too – but again in a subtle way – always blocking, shifting, and building his sound in ways that are deeply individual, and which make these mostly-familiar tunes sound mighty fresh. Titles include "Thermo", "I'm All Smiles", "Celebration", "Speak No Evil", "Besame Mucho", and "Three Views Of A Secret". CD

Blue Note, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic little album from tenorist James Carter – every bit as soulful as ever, and maybe even a bit funky too! The approach is wonderful – a bold trio with lots of Hammond from Gerald Gibbs and heavy drums from Alexander White – oddly tuned to songs from the book of Django Reinhardt, but done in a way that's completely different overall! There's not a trace of gypsy swing in the mix – and with no guitar in the group, there's no real Django element at all – just long, tight, funky grooves served up by a really great trio – with Carter blowing strongly, and with a heck of an edge! Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $19.99
A sweet sexy jungle soundtrack – issued for a film that appeared with many different erotic titles – but only this one great set of grooves from Stelvio Cipriani! Given the island setting of the narrative, there's a good amount of acoustic percussion in the mix – congas and other instruments used in ways that really work nicely with the keyboards and guitar – at a level that often comes off with a sort of sweet exotica funk approach! The style is almost a mix of Stelvio's usual groove with the 70s experiments of Mandigo – with a vibe that's completely sublime all the way through, and every bit as arresting as the image on the cover. And as usual with Cipriani, the mellow cuts are as great as the funky ones – a perfect and careful use of the best electric elements, all without ever going too far over the top – or ever sounding too clunky or commercial. CD features 28 tracks in all, and some great notes too! CD

Atlantic (Japan), 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
A real standout in Chris Connor's legendary run for Atlantic Records – and a unique double-length set that was almost her answer to some of the 2LP Verve songbook sessions from Ella Fitzgerald! Like those, this album's based upon the work of a single composer – and features key Gershwin compositions from the 20s and 30s, redone here with a moody, mellow, jazz-based approach – one that unlocks even more darkness in these tunes than you might expect! Instrumentation is by a number of different small groups – assemblages of players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Most on clarinet, Herbie Mann on flute, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al Cohn on tenor, and Ralph Sharon on piano – all working with arrangements by Sharon, Ray Ellis, and Stan Free. The album features a whopping 32 titles in all – with tracks that include "A Foggy Day", "Strike Up The Band", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Little Jazzbird", "My One & Only", "That Certain Feeling", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Liza", "Soon", and "I Can't Be Bothered Now". A world of rhythmic, danceable sounds from George Danquah – the legendary Ghanaian guitarist, composer and bandleader who had earlier played and/or toured with Benya Beats, Blue Monks and Uhuru Dance Band and other brilliant groups – and this rare mid 70s set is the only album billed to Danquah that we've ever been lucky enough to hear! It's amazing stuff and covers broad stylistic terrain while holding together strongly. There's some fairly straight up, yet uniquely arranged Afro Funk & soul, some reggae inspired rhythms, percussion driven gems and strains of highlife. Danquah plays guitar and handles the conducting and arranging, backed by a core of trumpet, tenor sax, organ, bass, drums and conga – with some vocals, wah wah guitar and flute. EMI/Music Box (France), 1980/1982/1983. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
A trio of soundtracks from Georges Delerue – each with a slightly different vibe! First up is the famous Le Dernier Metro – a beautifully rich score from the great Georges Delerue – the kind of music that he virtually invented for French cinema in the 70s – balanced with this way of using full orchestrations, yet never sounding too overblown – a sense of spaciousness that's maybe inherited a bit from Morricone and the Italians, but also used with the kind of warmer, more sentimental touches that we love in French cinema! Next is La Femma D'A Cote – warmly wonderful sounds from the great Georges Delerue – one of the few composers who can make music that's sentimental, but all without ever sounding too soppy – thanks to careful use of woodwinds in space, and an ear for some nice dark currents underneath the surface! The music has a really special sort of balance – the kind that few of Delerue's contemporaries could pull off this well! Vivement Dimanche is a masterpiece of melody and drama – served up here in a nicely extended set of tracks that runs the full scope of the score for the film – numbers that are often relatively sort, but pack a hell of a moody punch in the process. 2CD set features 55 tracks in all – plus notes in English and French. Guitarist Pierre Dorge has been giving us amazing music for many years – but he sounds especially amazing here in the company of a really great group – the excellent Kirk Knuffke on cornet, plus Stephen Riley on tenor, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Jay Anderson on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums – all very dynamic players who seem to make Dorge sound even fresher than ever! There's an especially strong sense of phrasing on the record – no surprise, especially with Knuffke in the mix – and while Pierre can sometimes use his instrument in more abstract ways, that quality is really balanced by all the other members of the lineup. MPS, 1974. Sealed ... $29.99
Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. A funky concept album from George Duke – and one that's filled with some mighty nice grooves! Guardians Of The Light is a full-on "musical fantasy" – with the story line laid out in the liner notes, yet still a bit difficult to follow – but we can't fault him for that when it's done in his masterful R&B-fusion-funk approach! George sings on all cuts, but he also gets some stellar vocal assistance from Jeffrey Osborne, Portia Griffin, and Patti Austin. The record also has some surprisingly sweet mellow moments that bring a deeper level of spacey soul to the out-there concept – those laidback lines that George could always do better than anyone else! Titles include "Born To Love You", "You Are The Light", "Reach Out", "Give Me Your Love", "Stand", "Soon", and "Fly Away". 3 bonus tracks on this FTG CD edition: "Reach Out (12" Version)", "Celebrate (Instrumental)" and "Brazilian Love Affair". Master Of The Game is an excellent mix of jazz, smooth soul, and Latin riffing – really a perfect blend of styles that shows not only how far George's sound had progressed throughout the 70s, it also charts the development of the California scene during the late 70s. The tracks have a smooth sound that works perfectly with Duke's best keyboard approaches – subduing his tenency to "rock out" a bit, but bringing forward his classic ability to hit a stone mellow groove. Titles include "I Want You For Myself", "Every Little Step I Take", "Look What You Find", "I Love You More", "Dog Man", and "Games". LP, Vinyl record album

George DuningMe & The Colonel ... LP
RCA (Spain), 1958. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A relatively dramatic score by George Duning – composer of a number of fine Hollywood soundtracks from the 50s, like Pal Joey, Picnic, and From Here To Eternity. The film's a slightly whimsical one with Danny Kaye in the lead, but Duning's approach is more somber, and more focused on emotive passages. Titles include "Amorous Colonel", "Best Of Enemies", "Colonel Kurt", "Jacobowsky", and "Like A Princess". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has split top seam held with clear tape and some peeled spots on the front.)

Georgie FameBest Of Georgie Fame 1967 to 1971 ... CD
Columbia (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $4.99
Nice set that brings together some of Georgie's later jazz vocal tracks for Columbia/CBS – most of which are a lot more far-reaching than his earlier "beat group" recordings. Some of the material has a bit more of a rockish feel, and other stuff has more of a trippy sound, but at the root of it all is Georgie's jazzy swinging vocals. Titles include "Blossom", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Try My World", "And I Love Her", and "The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde". Nice stuff, and hard to find on wax! CD

Georgie FameShorty ... LP
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. Titles include "Oliver's Gone", "Somebody Stole My Thunder", "Fully Booked", "Inside Story", and "Seventh Son". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing. Cover has a cut corner and is lightly stained & wavy at the bottom.)

✨✧ Georgie FameTwo Faces Of Fame – The Complete 1967 Recordings (stereo/mono – with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), 1967. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Disc 1 also features 13 bonus tracks from singles and EPs released in 1967 – and disc 2 is completed by 11 MORE bonus tracks – 6 released for the first time ever, including "Jumpin The Gun", "Respoken", "Fool's Paradise" and "Conquistador". Adam Forkelid/Georg Riedel/Jon FaltReminiscence ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
This might be the first we're ever hearing from pianist Adam Forkelid – and given the sound of the album, we hope we'll be hearing a lot more for years to come! Forkelid has this wonderful approach to the piano – very bold, powerful chords – even in the mellower moments – almost as if he's got these giant hands that can easily encompass the keyboard, and bring forth whatever warm sounds he likes – often with a blocky vibe that almost feels as if he was trained on Fender Rhodes, then moved to the acoustic piano! The group's also got superb work on bass from Georg Reidel – whose sound is as deep as Forkelid's – and drums by Jon Falt. All tunes are originals by the pianist – and tracks include "Cadence", "Play Theme", "New Beginning", "Round Montecristo", and "Reminiscence". CD

Imperial/Elemental (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... $9.99
Mindblowing organ work from the mighty Kim Fowley – a rare instrumental set that has Kim carving out amazing sounds on the organ that really match is vocal force on other records of the time! The set's a bit more soulful than usual for Fowley – a record that almost pushes a soul instrumental sound more strongly than Kim's usual Sunset Strip sleaze – although there is a nice fuzzy undercurrent to the record at times too! The set burns like some lost Tower Records soundtrack – and titles include "Born To Be Wild", "Soul Limbo", "Space Odyssey", "I Can't Stop Dancing", "Savage In The Sun", "Fresno1963", and "Pictures of Matchstick Men". George FreemanNew Improved Funk ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99
The title certainly gets it right – as the album's one of the funkiest ever from guitarist George Freeman, and one of the few to really hit that messed-up groove he was working in the clubs before his mid 70s retreat to Chicago! The style here is often all over the map – a mix of soul jazz and funkier numbers, but often served up with less of the direction than you'd get on Prestige, and even less of that on Groove Merchant – more in a raw small combo mode, with Freeman's guitar hitting plenty of raspy notes and weird solo excursions that keep even the mellower tunes exciting! The record features 2 different groups – one with John Young on piano, the other with Bobby Blevins on organ – and brother Von Freeman plays tenor sax on the whole set, although not nearly in the spotlight as George! (Definitely in keeping with something that Von told George many years back – quoted to us by George – "When you've got your own album, make sure that people know that you're the star!") Titles include "New Improved Funk", "Daffy", "Happy Fingers", "Confirmed Truth", "Guitar Lover Man", and "Big Finish". CD

Bill Frisell/Thomas MorganEpistrophy ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
The fragile side of Bill Frisell, captured here in a really beautiful way – a set of unadorned live duets with bassist Thomas Morgan – playing together at the Village Vanguard, with a sound that's maybe even slightly warmer than the album might have been than if recorded by ECM in the studio! The set's got Bill using all these subtle, careful elements in his guitar – sounds that might be overshadowed in a larger setting, especially when his work on the strings gets a bit more complex – and Morgan's bass is often quite spacious, leaving much of the core energy to come from Bill. Titles include "Mumbo Jumbo", "Lush Life", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "All In Fun", "Wildwood Flower", "You Only Live Twice", and "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning". CD
