✨✧ Gilberto GilOk Ok Ok (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great record from Gilberto Gil – a Brazilian legend who maybe strayed from his genius a bit in later years, but who's really been back on track of late! Gilberto's wonderful here – very up-close and personal, but also sharply witty too – returning to that energy that made his 70s material so important, with both a sense of the man and his larger ideas coming through in a really great way! There's some acoustic elements in the music at times, a few jazzy touches, and none of those sometimes-obtuse modes that Gilberto might have used 20 years back – just a clean, clear focus on the ever-flowing talents that make a record like this every bit as great as late life material from Caetano Veloso. Titles include "Uma Coisa Bonitinha", "Sereno", "Na Real", "Ok Ok Ok", "Yamandu", "Tartarugue", and "Sol De Maria". CD features bonus tracks "Pela Internet 2", "Kalil", and "Afogamento". CD

✨✧ Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". CD

✨✧ Nordjordet (Oyonn Groven Myhren/Bugge Wesseltoft)Nordjordet ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic meeting of ancient and modern on the Norwegian jazz scene – a set that echoes some of the vintage Scandinavian folk/jazz experiments of the 60s, but with a very different vibe! The project is a collaboration between traditional singer Oyonn Groven Myhren, who also plays this beautiful traditional lyre – and genius keyboardist/producer Bugge Wesseltoft, who also plays harmonium and "Groven-orgel" on the album! Yet the set's way more than just a duet between the two, because there's a mix of bass, percussion, and reed instruments in the mix too – taking the music into this majestic territory that's neither the traditional sounds that inspired it, nor the airy spare space of some of Bugge's other projects. Oyonn's vocals are amazing – completely mesmerizing, even if you don't know the language – and titles include "Mane Og Sol", "Kvedarjenta", "Svikefull Jomfru", "Du Minnes Nok", and "Dod Seplemann". This is the Aesop album on MUSH records before he got signed to Def Jux. It is a piece of raw, dark, poetic artistry that describes his hometown of NYC and the trials and tribulations in it beautifully. This album is a little rougher and his lyrical style is just a little more advanced on his later work, but all the same, it gets massive praise here. Tracks include "Commencement At The Obedience Academy", "Drawbridge", "Big Bang", "Garbage", "Basic Cable", "I'll Be OK", "Attention Span", "Spare A Match", "Breakfast With Blockhead", "Fascination", "Skip Town", "How To Be A Carpenter", "The Mayor And The Crook", "Prosperity", and more. RCA, Late 70s. Very Good- ... $8.99
Less of a full-on soundtrack by Bowie than a collection of work from some of his best albums of the mid and late 70s – pulled together to provide a musical backdrop for the film Christiane F! The versions here are supposedly alternate ones, but we're thinking that's just hype – because they sound pretty darn close to the album versions. But that's ok with us, because the tunes are all great – well-chosen work pulled from the incredible stretch that includes Bowie's legendary Berlin trilogy. Titles include "TVC 15", "Heroes", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Sense Of Doubt", "Station To Station", "Warsawza", "Stay", and "V2 Schneider". LP, Vinyl record album

A really great little live jazz date from the mid 50s – one that features a unique pairing of east and west coast players, working together as part of a Birdland Stars package tour! The group's an exceptionally balanced one – with players who are all strong enough to work together seamlessly, but who each bring together something different to the date – especially in the blend of west coast cool and east coast hot that comes up during some of the horn passages! Trumpets are by Kenny Dorham and Conte Candoli, tenor by Al Cohn, alto by Phil Woods, piano by Hank Jones, bass by John Simmons, and drums by Kenny Clarke – and with a balance like that, there's probably a bit more "east" than "west" on the set – but that's ok with us! The style is similar to some of the RCA work cut by Cohn or Woods, but a lot more open overall – tracks that are looser and less arranged, with some really great room for solos. Cugie's usual sound isn't that much in place, but that's ok, because tracks like "Thunderball", "Hang On Sloopy", "Tabasco", and "Soul Sauce" all groove nicely, and in a good 60's pop Latin vein, with nice solo moments by the band. A nice obscure Chicago modern soul single, with an obscure history. Gregory Bruce Finley owned a record store on 47th street on the south side, until the city tore down the block a few years ago as part of an urban renewal project. Although his main profession was that of a record store owner, Gregory also considered himself to be quite a singer, and he cut this record at some time in the 80's as his "calling card" into the entertainment business. Greg's not too bad of a singer, and the tracks are ok modern soul in an 80's kind of way – and Richard Evans even arranged one side. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Excellent early hard bop material from Mobley – in a style that's similar to his early Blue Note work, but with a bit less polish. Not that that's a bad thing, though – as the long tracks create some strong interplay between the groups, and the rough edges bring out some good sides of the players' tones that you don't get in slicker sessions from the time. The overall approach is definitely soul, but there's plenty of jazz inflections in the vocals and instrumentation – a vibe that's not unlike the best sound of Jon Lucien on RCA, but which is carried here by Parks with a bit more force – and these undeniably fluid vocals sounds that really blow us away! One track has more of an old school hip hop vibe – but that's OK with us, as it features guest work from Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Melle Mel, and Scorpio – and most of the rest are slamming club bangers, done with a very soulful groove – on titles that include "Don't Break My Heart", "Can't Stop (boogie mix)", "Hit It Off (disco soul version)", "Cut You Loose", "Give Me A Minute", "Shooting Star", "Universal Soldier", and "What You Like". Ok so she's got a Grammy – but that makes us love her even more! Jill Scott is one of the greatest soul artists to emerge in the past decade – and this second album avoids the usual "sophomore slump" by showing a whole new side of her talents! Disc one is a great live set – showing that Jill's organic talent isn't the product of studio trickery, and can conjure up as much warmth in person as it can on disc. The backing is tight, jazzy, and with a different finish than you might be accustomed to from Jill's first LP – less hip hop beats and more real funk drumming, a fuller group instrumental sound with lots of nice solos, and over it all, incredible vocals from Jill! Ok, so Van Morrison's left your group – what do you do? The remaining members of the group split off into two factions, the raunchier of which, the Belfast Gypsies, hooked up with Kim Fowley! This set documents the great work of that post-Morrison Them sidegroup – and most tracks were done in the company of Fowley, with a raw and raunchy sound that's a lot like Fowley's own best rock work of the time. The style's different from other Them work – but not so much so that it doesn't make for a nice extension of the "Gloria" sound – that raw, romping, rhythm heavy vibe of the combo – maybe even more focused at the core without Van Morrison on vocals. Titles include "Hey Gyp (Dig The Slowness)", "Suicide Song", "Secret Police", "People Let's Freak Out", and "Gloria's Dream". We're not entirely sure what "fischiando" means, but we can definitely testify that the album lives up to the "beat" in its title – those kind of groovy, mod tunes we love so much in Italian 60s soundtracks from the great Piero Umiliani! This set's even more obscure than most of those records, though – done for the tiny Omicron sound library, as part of Piero's Sound Workshop series – with a nice mix of jazzy instrumentation on horns, plus a sweet range of keyboards that include Fender Rhodes, Hammond, and even a bit of spinet! Some tunes have bossa rhythms, others are more 60s mod – and the record also features a few sweet bits of whistling and acoustic guitar as well – although the main focus seems to come from the horns and keyboards. Titles include "Yes OK", "Autostop Per Rio", "Fischiando In Beat", "Tokio Blues", "Go Go Go", "Sono Un NJostalgico", and "Samba Mah Na", a great remake of one of Umiliani's famous themes! CD

Epic, 1968. Very Good ... $39.99
The one-and-only album by San Francisco singer-songwriter Dino Valente – an enigmatic cat best known for penning the hippie anthem "Get Together" – and a much deeper and more adventurous writer then you'd know from that one ubiquitous song! Dino bridged the coffee shop folk scene with sprawling psychedelia on this album. He has the Tim Buckley kind of stream-of-conciousness restlessness, and the record's full of lovely acoustic guitar accompanied by unlikely horn and flute flourishes. Dino was hardly a conventional singer – so the production hand of Bob Dylan knob twirler Bob Johnston couldn't be a better fit. Chucho Zarzosa Y Su ConjuntoConcierto En Jazz ... LP
RCA, 1962. Very Good ... $28.99
A live set from this obscure Mexican jazz combo – recorded in the early 60s, in a mode that's kind of a small combo take on an Ellington sound, but with some freer twists too! The approach is nicely offbeat – starting out familiar at first, but then opening up with some offbeat elements that come partly from the group's phrasing, and partly from the way the whole thing's put together – all of which makes for a great little record that goes way past the usual! Pianist Chucho Zarzosa heads of the group – playing an odd-toned instrument with a lot of charm – and other players include Pepe Solis on trumpet, Rodolfo Sanchez on baritone and alto, Mario Ballina on bass, and Felix Agueros on drums – working together nicely on the album's four long tracks. Sanchez is especially nice – with an unusual tone that really comes through on the album's extended version of "Peter Gunn", which features him blowing oddly and in lots of curvy ways – and other tracks include "Perdido", "My Funny Valentine", and "Take the A Train". VariousAfrica Boogaloo – The Latinization Of West Africa ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A long-overdue collection of work – one that really gets at the unusual appearance of Latin rhythms on the African scene of the postwar years! Latin sounds from Africa are nothing new, but they're one of those things that's always taken for granted, too – kind of assumed in most discussions of the rhythms from the 60s onward, but never explained as fully as might be needed! Given the already-great grooves going down on the continent for generations, it's surprising that African musicians might pick up styles from Cuba and the Caribbean – yet due to the vagaries of global cultural circulation, that's exactly what happened – and the music has never been the same ever since. This really well-done package offers up a range of tracks from the 50s through the 70s – showing some of the earliest African extrapolations of Latin styles – clearly enforcing the "Afro" in Afro-Cuban rhythms – then moving onto some later grooves that offer up some funkier styles too. The work's a bridge between the ethnographic sets on Honest Jons, and some of the tighter grooves you might find on a Soul Jazz collection – a wonderful blend of music, packaged beautifully too. Titles include "A Moins Que Namikosa" by Orchestra OK Jazz, "Rampa Rampa" by Orchestre Yaya Mas, "Quiero Wapacha" by Charles Lembe, "Ven Y Ven Y Ven" by Orchestre OK Jazz, "Vamos A Bailar" by Rio Band, "Guantanamo" by Laba Sosseh, "On Verra Ca" by Orchestre Baobab, "Mi Guajeo" by Orchestre N'Guewel, "N'Niyo" by Amara Toure, "Il N'Est Jamais Trop Tard" by Pierre Tchana & Orchestre Poly Rhythmo, "Africa Boogaloo" by Le Grande Kalle with Don Gonzalo & Manu Dibango, and "Adigbedoto" by Gnonnas Pedro. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A really tremendous collection of music – and one that really gets at the heart of the criss-crossing of Latin and African modes that took place on the Congolese scene of the 50s and 60s! Sounds and styles from Cuba and the Caribbean definitely influenced other African scenes, but they took an especially strong form in the Democratic Republic Of The Congo, and the Republic Of The Congo – where the percussion and rhythms wove in with West African styles of guitar, and also added some jazzy flourishes too – maybe a slight influence from the South African scene nearby. Whatever the logistics, though, the sound is great – still very fresh after all these years, and beautifully documented by Soul Jazz – at a level that really lives up to their great legacy of introducing ears to music in just the right way! This large package is an expanded version of their earlier 7" box set release for Record Store Day, with a lot more tracks – and titles include "Ngong Ebeti Independence" by African Jazz, "Marie Louise" by Wendo Kolosy, "Cherie Nini" by Rock A Mambo, "Grupo OK Jazz" by Grupo OK Jazz, "Yo Me Moera" by Begun Band, "Vive Patrice Lumumba" by African Jazz, "Luiza" by Essous Et Orchestre Bantou, "Allegria" by Nino & Rock-A-Mambo, "Tcha Tcha Tcha De Mi Amor" by Brazzos Et OK Jazz, "Sois Sage Amour" by Edo & OK Jazz, "Na Lingi Na Ngai Kubala Te" by Dewayon & Conga Jazz, and "Cha Cha Cha Del Zombo" by Brazzos Et OK Jazz. Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99 26.98
The best look at Chicago's legendary Twinight label that we've ever seen – a massive 2CD set that goes way past the obvious hits, and really digs into the heart and soul of this unique little record company! Twinight is best known as the home of Syl Johnson during his legendary run of funky soul singles at the end of the 60s – but the company was also home to a lot of other great talent during the same stretch – harmony vocal groups, sweet soul singers, funky combos, and more – all of which you'll hear in this incredible little set! (And in fact, the set does such a great job of presenting the other artists on Twinight, that it leaves out Syl Johnson entirely – so the package is a 100% non-Syl set – which is ok with us, because you can always get Johnson's work on other reissues.) The Numero Group have really outdone themselves this time around – using their careful ear to pull out the best lost bits from Twinight, remastered here with wonderful sound – and a brilliant 32 page booklet that tells the story of the label, and also includes loads of vintage photos. The set's a must-have for any fan of quality funk or soul – and the package includes a whopping 40 titles that include "Goin Man Huntin" by Jo Ann Garrett, "I've Made Up My Mind" by Josephine Taylor, "A New Day" by The Notations, "Nevermore" by Renaldo Domino, "Yesterday's Mistakes" by Jimmy Jones, "I'll Always Love You" by Velma Perkins, "Life Walked Out" by Mist, "Put Out The Fire by Mystiques, "You & Me Baby" by Kaldirons, "Rosemarie" by Dynamic Tints, "Remind Me" by Schiller Street Gang, "Is It Meant To Be" by Krystal Generation, "Pardon My Innocent Heart" by Nate Evans, "Package Of Love (part 1)" by Dynamic Tints, "The Devastator" by Stormy, "Mama" by Annette Poindexter, "Pass It On (part 1)" by Pipes Of Peace, "My Sunshine Girl" by Radiants, "Let Me Come Within" by Renaldo Domino, "Soul Strokes" by Sidney Pinchback, and "Can You Find Me Love" by Harrison & The Majestic Kind. BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2016. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The archive here appears to be Volcov's own record collection – but that's A-OK with us, because he's got some wonderfully groovy, wonderfully soulful, wonderfully under-discovered records he wants to share with us! The set's got a wicked blend of obscure tracks from decades back, and some contemporary cuts that share a similar vibe – music that's in a really special place between soul, jazz, and fusion – often with a cosmic vibe that gives the whole collection a very righteous sound! Liner notes are by Patrick Forge, who points out how obscure most of these tracks are, and what a special collection this is – and we definitely agree with his words, as most of these tracks are new to us, too. Titles include "Keep The Same Old Feeling" by Hot Quisine, "Do The Right Thing" by JOB, "Go (Chez Damien classic mix)" by The Urban Cru, "The Sound Of The Memory Of Many Living People" by Are & Be, "Arigo (Volcov edit)" by Manfredo Fest, "Turning On To Me" by Oneness Of Juju, "Footprints On The Sand (Shannon Harris Urbanicity reinterpretation)" by Chanan Hanspal, "Sophisticated Disco (Volcov edit)" by O'Donel Levy, "Simon's Melody" by The Antilles, "Part 4" by Shakazulu, and "Sun On My Back" by Bembe Segue. A really revelatory collection – a set of vintage recordings from the Jewish community in London's East End – songs with sounds that resonate very strongly with the musical sound of New York's Lower East Side during the same stretch of time! There's definitely some of the jazz promised in the title, and plenty of klezmer-styled instrumentation – but many tracks are vocal, and a fair bit also move into Yiddish comedy modes, which is A-OK with us – kind of a London variation on modes you might know from Mickey Katz and some of his contemporaries, especially on the postwar tracks, which dominate the set. The package has a great set of notes, and titles include "Beigels" by Max Bacon, "Tzena Tzena Tzena" by Johnny Franks & His Kosher Ragtimers, "A Letter To My Mother" by Lew Stone & The Monseigneur Band, "Selection Of Hebrew Dances No 1" by Ambrose & His Orchestra, "Festival Of Britain" and "Whitechapel" by Chaim Towber with Johnny Franks Orchestra, and "Petticoat Lane" by The Plaza Band – plus "Jews Temporary Shelter 75th Anniversary Appeal", from a rare 1960 flexidisc! Who better to spend Halloween with than Lux and Ivy of The Cramps – a pair who almost act like it's the last day of October all year long! Lux and Ivy are well-known as collectors of strange and offbeat 45s from the late 50s and early 60s – and that period also coincides with a great run of horror rock, monster novelties, and other spook-oriented singles – the sorts that are almost like the audio equivalent of catching a schlocky film on the late late show, or sitting at the drive-in watching some low-budget monster movie! Cotillion, 1970. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Brook Benton – and the kind of record that always gets overlooked in discussions of southern soul, but which is proof that Benton's always been a key force in the genre! Brook virtually invented the style with his earlier country soul recordings – and by the time of this 1970 set, he's in perfect form vocally – and working under some wonderfully sophisticated arrangements by Arif Mardin. The result is the kind of cross-genre record that Brook could do effortlessly – and which should have made him huge, but instead kind of got him left behind by all the other folks who were copping his style. Yet with the strength of a record like this, we'll take that overlooked fame as still OK – because the set's a gem just waiting to be discovered by later generations like us! Rhythm's by the Dixie Flyers – augmented by jazz players that include King Curtis, Pepper Adams, and Joe Newman. Titles include "Aspen Colorado", "For Lee Ann", "Whoever Finds This, I Love You", "Don't It Make You Wanta Go Home", and "Let Me Fix It". LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty huge step for The Cure – with a heavier drum sound, seemingly more confident vocals by Robert Smith, and a very compelling sound – standing strong to this day among their best ever! OK, we can say that now, but at the time of release, a lot of the press still didn't really "get" The Cure, dismissing Pornography as a glum downer. In hindsight it's pretty laughable given their legacy was actually really starting to take root here! There's real emotional catharsis in the supposedly depressing lyrics, the production stands the test of time, and it's and one we come back to year after year. Classic! Includes "One Hundred Years", "A Short Term Effect", "The Hanging Garden", "Siamese Twins", "The Figure Head", "A Strange Day", "Cold" and "Pornography". CD

A lovely little disco album from the duo of Elaine & Ellen – working here with some super-soulful arrangements from producer Donald Burnside, done in an extended funky club mode that reminds us of some of the best Prelude work of the time! The vocals are ok, but the real charm is in these backings – which break out with plenty of instrumental passages, and feature a pumping mix of keys, guitar, and bass that jams nicely under a larger horn section. The hits of 77 here aren't the big American chart hits of 1977 – but instead are some key cuts from the Jamaican scene in Kingston – served up here in versions produced by the legendary Sonia Pottinger! And in fact, it might be a stretch to call all these cuts hits – but that's OK with us, because the set works best as a musical snapshot of evolving 70s reggae from Pottinger's perspective – which, as always, represents the more soulful side of the spectrum – that move forward from earlier rocksteady inspiration, served up with more of a late 70s reggae vibe. Titles include "Anywhere You want To Go" by Calman Scott, "Without Love" by Hell & Fire, "Up Park Camp" by Turnel McCormack & The Cordells, "I'm Still In Love" by Maureen Pearson, "Run For Your Life" by Earth & Stone, and "Ghetto Girl" by The Fantells. PLUS, this 2CD version features a huge amount of bonus tracks – 34 more numbers added to the original album, most unavailable since the 70s – all Pottinger-produced tracks by Jimmy Riley, Delroy Wilson, Earth & Stone, Reggae George, Bobby Ellis & The Revolutionaries, Al Brown, Astley Bennett, The Prince Brothers, U Roy, Owen Gray, Soul Syndicate, and others. Columbia/BGO (UK), 1980/1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky fusion galore – two Stanley Clarke albums on a single CD! Rocks Pebbles & Sand is killer work from Stanley – a set to start off the 80s, but still very much in that unique blend of jazz, rock, and soul he forged so well in the 70s! The set begins with really heavy drums and bass – nicely propelled, but never too strong or too jamming – a great balance that really sets the pace well for the record as Clarke and the combo pulsate through a range of nice little numbers – often linked with a cool motorcycle sound effect! There's a few 80s touches, mostly in the keyboards, but these are never too modern – and all used very nicely. Titles include the extended "Story Of A Man & A Woman" suite – plus "Danger Street", "All Hell Broke Loose", "Rocks Pebbles & Sand", and "Underestimation". On Let Me Know You, Stanley Clarke's a lot more soul-based than fusion – but that's A-OK with us, because we like this sort of work a lot better than his jamming jazz rock of the 70s! The record's got a great mellow soul vibe – laidback and gently stepping – sometimes in a way that's a bit commercial, but never with as many of the cloying styles as hurt other records like this at the time. Stan sings, plays bass and guitar, and other players include Greg Phillinganes on Fender Rhodes and mini-moog, Ndugu Chancler on drums, Michael Sembello on guitar, and Paulinho Da Costa on percussion. Some numbers here are straightforward hard rockers, but others have a more complex approach – not proggy, almost performative – like some of the trippier French material of the period, which almost had a communal creation sort of vibe. There's plenty of searing guitars and very offbeat French lyrics – and the record's got a very nice sense of variety from tune to tune. Titles include "Quebec Nous T'Aimons", "Groovy", "Petite Fille T'Es Down", "OK L'Chien", "Charogne", "Heavy", and "Aux Petits Oiseux" – which is a very cool psychedelic raga that rounds out the record! Our fair city of Chicago has always been a pretty sleazy place – but back at the start of the 20th century, there was a higher kind of sex trade going on – one that featured high class houses of ill-reputed, and well-educated hookers – which led to a lot more crossing over between the brothels and the boardrooms! This well-done book looks at a very specific time in the city's history – a point when Chicago was really coming into its own – both as a city of industry and a city of sin – a place where reformers rubbed shoulders with gangsters, as part of the new urban experiment. The book does a great job of tracing this larger narrative, in a way that's hardly as salacious as you might expect – a different sort of snapshot than the Devil In The White City. 364 pages, softcover. Paradise Of Bachelors, Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy LP, 3CD & Book ... $26.99 32.99
Terry Allen has always been one of the most enigmatic figures in Texas music – but the work included here might well be some of his most compelling – even if it is a bit far from the straighter country of his start! Allen's always been a very narrative songwriter – and here, he takes that form one further – in a series of radio plays and longer audio narratives, most of which intersperse sung passages with spoken bits, sound effects, and beautiful music as well! These aren't any sort of sleepy, too-prosaic works – but instead, the sort of material that's always had us link Allen's music with the books of Barry Gifford or Barry Hannah – instantly evocative, and with a vision for storytelling that's completely captivating – a journey begun on his Juarez album, and really extended here. The special package features the first vinyl appearance of a few of these pieces – and 3CDs of music that contain the complete "Pedal Steel", "Torso Hell", "Bleeder", "Dugout", and "Reunion (A Return To Juarez)". Also features a great 28 page booklet on all the material! LP, Vinyl record album

AlzoAlzo (aka Looking For You) ... LP
Bell, 1972. Very Good ... $11.99
A really unique little record – soulful, folksy, and with a slight jazzy tinge at times – and the first solo album cut by one half of the Alzo & Udine Latin soul duet who recorded for Mercury in the late 60s! This solo album has a bit of a different flavor than Alzo's work with Udine, but the singing and instrumentation have a lot of nice jazzy changes – and the whole thing skips along with the same earthy, personal feel that made the earlier album so great. The whole thing's sort of in between Colin Blunstone and Nick Drake, but with a bit more of a soulful vibe – and an ultra-hip mix of styles that makes us wonder why Alzo wasn't hailed as the hippest thing going at the time. Bob (Multiplication Rock) Dorough arranged and produced, with a very groovy style – and tracks include "Country", "That's Alright", "Without You Girl", "Some People", "Lookin' For You", and "You Know Me, I Know You". LP, Vinyl record album

Okyerema AsanteSabi ... LP
Atumpan/Kalita (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A lost set from percussionist Okyerema Asante – an African percussionist, but one who made some great music as part of the Black Fire/Oneness Of Juju collective on the DC scene in the 70s! This album follows with a spirit that's a bit like the later work of Oneness – and in fact, the group also features its leader, the excellent Plunky Nakabinde on a variety of saxes and flute. There's a strong dancefloor current at times – mixing funk and soul with deeper roots – similar to Oneness on their Make A Change album, inflected with lots of clubby rhythms and a bit of electronics. The best cut is "That's My Girl" – a 15 minute number that grooves on with some good sax bits from Plunky, and a catchy hook that comes off quite soulfully – but the other long track, "Sabi (Get Down)", is pretty great too. David AxelrodSongs Of Experience (with booklet) ... CD
Capitol/Now Again, 1969. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums ever by studio genius David Axelrod! The album's one of Axelrod's first on his own – cut for Capitol Records at a time when he was working with some of the label's biggest selling soul acts – like Cannonball Adderley and Lou Rawls – turning their already-successful sounds into super-hit material by adding some nice funky touches, and excellent baroque production. This album lets Axelrod fully explore his talents for larger studio arrangements, and complex yet soulful instrumentation. The record is subtitled "an anthology of awareness after birth, based on the 18th century poems of William Blake" – and it features incredible arrangements conducted by Don Randi, played by a host of excellent LA jazz and studio players. The overall sound is spacey and dark, with nice touches of funk, and plenty of cool instrumental passages that have been sampled over the years by hip hoppers and other producers. Titles include "London", "The Fly", "The Human Abstract", "A Divine Image", and "The Sick Rose". CD

Arnaldo BaptistaLoki ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1974. Used ... $18.99
A freaky little solo album by Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes – a set that's every bit as wild as you might guess from the cover! The album was recorded right after the first few classics by Os Mutantes – in 1974 – and Baptista wrote all of the songs, except for one, which lists "Os Mutantes" in the credits – which is an illustration of how strongly the sound of the record is tied to that group. Unlike the vocals of the group albums, though, the tracks feature Arnaldo's booze-drenched vocals right up front – with backing by piano, and some very theatrical arrangements that are quite different than the work of his earlier Tropicalia group. The record is tough to describe – sort of a mix of early 70s Euro singer/songwriter trends, particularly those of the Saravah scene – with maybe a bit of post-psych rock, with piano as the most dominant instrument in the mix. There's a surprisingly personal feel to the whole thing – and titles include "Uma Pessoa So", "Nao Estou Nem Ai", "Desculpe", "E Facil", and "Navegar De Novo". CD

Each fake toy gets a full color page – like an ad from the back cover of a vintage comic or kids magazine – and the creations are so cool, we really have trouble believing they never really existed!
