✨✧ DevoQ: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Space Junk", "Come Back Jonee", "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy TaylorOne For Fun ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
It might not be the frolic that the title implies, but that's a plus – because this a straight-up solid early album from Taylor – recorded in tight trio format, with that no-nonsense soulful approach that made him a star player from the start! The group features the great (and underrated) Earl May on bass and Kenny Dennis on drums – both of whom help Taylor work some simple magic that flowers wonderfully as the album moves on. There's a tight, sharp, in the pocket groove here that makes Taylor a key precursor for other piano talents to come in the 60s – and titles include "When Lights Are Low", "At Long Last Love", "Poinciana", "Blue Moon", "One For Fun", and "A Little Southside Soul". Booker T & The MGsComplete Stax Singles Vol 1 – 1962 to 1967 ... CD
Stax/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A treasure trove of tight, organ-driven grooves from Booker T & The MGs – a quartet who really helped transform the sound of soul music in the 60s – even if they never sang on any of their records! The combo instrumental record had existed before Booker and the group, but working at Stax Records during the glory days of the Memphis soul scene, The MGs were able to come up with a whole new approach – tight, focused, and very sharp – not entirely funky, but not far off either – usually just with a scratchy guitar line to tighten up the rhythm, and Booker's fantastic lines on the organ to set up the tune! The group recorded a number of classic albums for Stax, but they maybe shone most on their singles – especially the b-sides, which were where they really had fun. (And trivia – "Green Onions", their biggest hit, was originally a b-side!) The set features the first run of their Stax singles – 29 tracks in all, with lots of unusual instrumentals next to the hits – titles that include "My Sweet Potato", "Booker Loo", "Aw Mercy", "Home Grown", "Big Train", "Chinese Checkers", "MG Party", "Soul Dressing", "Tic Tac Toe", "Mo Onions", "Behave Yourself", "Slim Jenkins Place", "Winter Wonderland", "Hip Hug Her", "Red Beans & Rice", "Can't Be Still", "Terrible Thing", "Outrage", "Boot Leg", "Fannie Mae", "Summertime", "Winter Snow", and of course, "Green Onions". ✨✧ Eddie HarrisDancing By A Rainbow ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1995. New Copy ... $16.99
A lovely later set from Eddie Harris – proof that his groove was still going strong years after his bigger fame on the scene! The set here features all original work by Eddie – some titles we know from classic albums, but a few others we don't easily recognize – all of which work together to make for a really fresh batch of material, and hardly the sort of overplayed standards that some jazz players resort to in their older years. The group's a relatively youthful one – with Nolan Smith on trumpet, Ronald Muldrow on guitar, Jeff Chambers on bass, and Gaylord Birch on drums – and Eddie himself plays piano in addition to his usual tenor sax. Titles include "An April To Be Remembered", "Dancing By A Rainbow", "Set Us Free", "The Grand Strut", "Mean Greens", "You Are Not The Right One For Me", and "It's Just Fun & Games". CD

Sequoyah MurrayPenalties Of Love EP ... 12-inch
Thrill Jockey, 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $5.99
A really amazing debut from Sequoyah Murray – a young soul singer we have a feeling we'll be hearing plenty from in years to come! Sequoyah's got a style that's very much his own – one born out of frequent collaboration and improvisation – with elements that are maybe as jazz-based at times as soul – often set to spare instrumentation with percussion, keyboards, and other subtle sonic elements – frequently very much in the low range of the sonic spectrum, but not in a way that leans heavily on basslines or beats. Instead, there's all these moody sub-spectrum elements that shimmer beneath the vocals – and which create a platform that makes the whole thing unlike anything else we've ever heard. Titles include "True Fun", "Second Born", "Haven", and "Penalties Of Love". 12-inch, Vinyl record

MCA, 1982. Sealed ... $6.99
A novelty group if there ever was one, but they still had their day with the big hit "Pass the Dutchie", not that any of them were even old enough to know what they were singing about, or should have been. Beyond that track there's not a whole lot that's remarkable about their commercial soul-reggae, but that cut's fun enough, and will certainly keep some folks entertained, if you were to drop it in your set. Also includes "Heartbreaker", "Blind Boy", "Yound Generation", "Mirror Mirror", "Children Of Zion", "Never Gonna Give You Up", and "Schoolgirl". LP, Vinyl record album

Modern mod groovers – a serious 60s retro sound in force, mixing Hammond organ, bossa beats, jangly guitars, and a bit of Motown soul – very much in the Blow Up kind of style, with perhaps a bit more of a modern bounce in the beats! There's some campy elements to the overall production – but in a way that keeps the whole set fun and fresh, not as sleepy as some recent efforts in this mode, and with twists and turns that will keep you listening through the end again and again. Titles include "Belly Bossanova", "The Thing Demands", "Hurry Up", "Frenzy", "Catwalk", "High Voltage", and "Hip Teens", as well as "Frenzy", "Comin Home Baby", and "The Rural Assiduity" which are not included on the revised version CD. Norton/Kicks, 2011. New Copy Book ... Just Sold Out!
The Science Fiction Poetry of Sun Ra – complete and unabidged – in a great, kinda old school hip pocket paperback-styled tome from Kicks Books! As revered as Sun Ra is, was, and will forever be as one of the great avant garde bandleaders and all around musical innovators of the 20th Century, his work as an Afro-futurist poet is overlooked. This book aims to change that, but not in a precious way at all. It's sort of presented as a fun little pulp paperback. Includes a nice forward by Amiri Baraka and an intro by science fiction historian Bhob Stewart, who does a terrific job of detailing Ra's 60s poetry and his quite genuine relevence in that realm! Rose GardenRose Garden ... LP
Atco, 1968. Very Good+ ... $14.99
An overlooked gem from the Cali scene of the late 60s – music by a group with folksy roots, a bit of a British influence, and a warmth that sometimes gives them a bit of a Sunshine Pop vibe – but one that really hints at much deeper possibilities that should have made them huge! There's a mix of girl and guy vocals on a number of tracks, but often handled with a moody vibe that's really unique – not one soaring out and the other going deep, and instead often tied together in this way that has a wonderfully blue-tinged vibe – bringing a bit of sadness even where you might not expect. There's also a bit of a late 60s Byrds sound to the music – that moment right before the group was working with Gram Parsons – and the set features two songs that were given by Gene Clark to the band to record. Titles include "Coins Of Fun", "Next Plane To London", "Long Time", "Look What You've Done", "Till Today", "She Belongs To Me", "Rider", and "February Sunshine". LP, Vinyl record album

Third Man, 1970. New Copy ... $10.99 13.99
The original Stooges, captured here live at the Goose Lake Festival in 1970 – an event that was the midwest answer to Woodstock – and which sported some performances that were equally the stuff of legend! This set definitely falls into that category – as it not only features the group working through a searing live reading of Funhouse, it also marks that final performance by the original lineup of the group – Iggy Pop on vocals, Ron Asheton on guitar, Dave Alexander on bass, and Scott Asheton on drums – plus a bit of sax work from Steve Mackay, who's sometimes buried in the frenzy of the guitar! The recording was taken directly from the board, and restored in 1979 – and is presented here as a stunning document of this frenzied group in all their glory. Maestro Richie Weeks is at the helm of this sweet set of early 80s groovers – funky club in the best second chapter mode of the Salsoul label – served up with a sound that's lean and mean throughout! We're not sure who the "Co" is, since Richie sings, plays keyboards, and handles most of the rhythms too – all at a level that's tight, but never uptight – and which gets graced at points by some jazzy instrumentation and female chorus vocals too! Tunes are mighty catchy – grooving, but in a hip post-disco way – and there's even a bit of vocoder on some of the lyrics. Titles include "Good To The Last Drop", "Tunnel Of Love", "Knock, Knock", "Rockin It In Your Pocket", and "Going Out Of My Head". We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. Killer instrumentals from the glory days of the garagey combo – a smoking little set that's very heavy on twangers – those wicked guitar-driven cuts that were often recorded with lots of cool echo and effects! Some of the names here are big ones, but most are smaller and lesser-known groups – and even the stars are represented by rare or unissued tracks – making the whole package as much fun as sorting through a rare pile of rock instrumental 45s from the 60s! VariousNigeria 70 – The Definitive Story Of 1970s Funky Lagos (3CD set) ... CD
Afrostrut (UK), 1970s. Used 3 CDs ... $18.99
A fantastic batch of grooves – and a much-needed document of the rich array of funky sounds that were coming out of Nigeria in the 1970s! The country's best known as the homeland of Fela Kuti – an artist who forever changed the face of global funk – but what's not as well known is that there were a number of other artists operating in Fela's shadow, crafting their own interpretation of American soul and African funk during the same generation. This overstuffed package offers a great look (and listen) into that scene – and compiles tracks by a few artists you might already recognize, plus others that are presented here for the first time in such a set. As with other compilations on the Strut label, the notes are very well done, with loads of information and details on the recordings – but even more importantly, the music is fantastic, with a rich array of grooves that blows away most other recent compilations of Afro Funk from the 70s! Titles include "Enjoy Yourself" by Sahara All Stars Band, "Shango" by Peter King, "Dancing Time" by The Funkees, "Ikon Allah" by Bala Miller & The Great Music Pirameeds Of Afrika, "Tire Loma Da Nigbehin" by Monomono, "Kita Kita" by Gasper Lawal, "Agboju Logun" by Shina Williams & His African Percussionists, "Akayan Ekassa" by Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maesstroes, "Ja Fun Mi (inst)" by Sunny Ade, "Alla Wakbarr" by Ofo The Black Company, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, "Jenu Ko Ku" by Fela & Africa 70, "La La La" by Segun Bucknor, and "Orere Elejigbo" by Lijadu Sisters. 3CD version – with a great booklet – and a bonus CD that contains a documentary on the music. 23 tracks in all! Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A tight batch of rare rockers from a tiny North Carolina label from the end of the 50s – a set that's a nice contrast to some of the other volumes in this excellent series, which usually focus on lost rockabilly nuggets in the vaults of major labels! Here, there's a vibe that's much more unified overall – as most of the early tracks feature a core combo providing most of the rhythms for a lead singer and lead guitar – and even the later ones seem to hold on to a tight sort of label style, which makes for a very unified vibe through the 35 tracks in the collection! The music's not just rockabilly, either, as there's a number of cuts here that have a more direct inspiration from R&B – some of that crossover Carolina soul at its earliest levels – and there's maybe a few that echo some older styles from the hills, too. As with all volumes, the Bear Family presentation is great – very detailed notes, great sound, plenty of history, and a massive set list – with titles that include "Problem Child" and "Betcha Didn't Know" by Wayne Handy, "I Want Everything My Baby Got" and "Our Southern Way Of Living" by Jim Thornton, "Buzz Me On The Telephone" by Irving Fuller & The Chorvettes, "Cold North Wind" and "I'm Not Ashamed" by Lonnie Dee, "True Blue" by Joe Franklin & The Hi-Liters, "Stop Walking All Over Me" and "Tears Falling Down Down Down"b y Harold Pope, "Bad Boy" by Don Ray with The Hornets, "The Day I Die" by Daryl Petty, "Do You Ever Think Of Me" by Clyde Moody, "The Pad" by Bobby Strigo with The Blue Notes, "I'm Going Home" by Hughie Owens with The Blue Notes, and "Making Fun Of Me" by Bobby Rose. A&M, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Forget everything you know about "Raindrops Are Falling On My Head", and give Burt kudos for this gem of an album! Sure, "Raindrops" shows up here a few times – instrumentally, and in 2 BJ Thomas vocal versions – and it's not a bad tune at all. But the real gems are some of the instrumentals – which have Burt almost doing a Tijuana take on his classic A&M sound – in a style that's really wonderful! Our favorite cut is the amazing "South American Getaway" – a breezy vocal scatting number that seems to take the best of the Swingle Singers and I Cantori Modern and roll them into one groovy tune that soars, dips, turns, twists, and holds our dear heart close for 5 minutes and 13 seconds! It's a real gem, and worth the price of the album alone – but you'll also get a few other nice ones, like "The Old Fun City", "The Sundance Kid", "Come Touch The Sun", and "Not Goin Home Anymore". Montage, 1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's almost a hip hop cover on the front – one that would be years ahead of its time – but the record's a great batch of soul from this overlooked group! There's a tightness here that goes way beyond the previous album from Black Ice – a really top-shelf delivery all the way through – of the sort you'd expect to hear from a much bigger act at the time. The album's divided into two sides – a "lover's side" and a "dancer's side" – the latter of which features the band grooving in kind of an 80s club mode, with lots of bass pedals and a smooth funky sound that's not too bad. The real strength, though, is the lover's side – which is sort of an update of the 70s east coast harmony sound, given a smooth modern soul twist, but still retaining the best part of the vocal style, especially on the midtempo cuts. Titles include "I Just Wanna Hold You", "This Time", "Never Knew Love", "Big Fun", and the ode to designer jeans, "Sergios (I Want To Be With You)". CD

✨✧ Pink FairiesPolydor Years (Never Never Land/What A Bunch Of Sweeties/Kings Of Oblivion/with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Floating World (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of key albums from the Pink Fairies – served up with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Never Never Land – the fantastic debut of the Pink Fairies – easily one of the shaggiest, headiest bands on the UK scene at the start of the 70s – and a group who rose from the ashes of the equally important Deviants! The record's an unusual mishmash of modes – a set that confidently swaggers between psych, hard rock, and maybe even a bit of proto-punk – very confident in its approach, and coolly compressed in the production, but never in the slick style that would dominate British rock more strongly in the mid 70s. The Fairies aren't afraid to let their freak flag fly, but they're also clearly moving past hippiedom too – on titles that include "War Girl", "Do It", "Say You Love Me", "Tack One Side Two", "Thor", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout", and "The Dream Is Just Beginning". What A Bunch Of Sweeties is filled with freaky fuzz from the Pink Fairies – a seminal UK group who were maybe trapped in a space between late psych and early glam – and somehow equally important to both! There's lots going on in the set – modes that are as offbeat as styles put forth by The Fugs in the late 60s, but a lot sharper overall from a musical perspective – especially in the way the group uses great guitar work and a few catchy numbers to sew the whole thing together – on titles that include "Portobello Shuffle", "Marilyn", "Pigs Of Uranus", "Walk Don't Run", "X-Ray", "I Went Up I Went Down", and "I Saw Her Standing There". Kings Of Oblivion is maybe the most fully-formed album from the legendary Pink Fairies – and a set that's got some really searing guitar from Larry Wallis – a melodic genius whose sound really holds things together, and gives the group a stronger focus than ever before! The guitar lines seem to bring out and amplify all the ideas the group were going for before – and maybe give the group a sense of darkness that they never fully reached – not hard rock cliche, but this tightness that's also completely individual – maybe like early Thin Lizzy at their best, yet in a completely different way. Titles include "I Wish I Was A Girl", "City Kids", "When's The Fun Begin", "Chromium Plating", "Street Urchin", and "Chamber Maid". Bonus tracks include "Going Down", "Walk Don't Run (first version)", "War Girl (alt mix)", "The Snake", "Do It (single mix)", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout (alt mix)", "Well Well Well (alt mix)", "City Kids (alt)", and "Hold On (single)". Columbia/BGO (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Stanley Clarke at the height of his powers – two 70s classics back to back on CD! Modern Man is a bit more high concept than before for Stanley Clarke – almost a suite of sorts, but one that still has some great standout tunes in the mix! Although Clarke used to bring his higher concepts to bear in the space of a single song, this one's more of a full exploration of the character in the title – served up at the best moments with more soul than on previous albums from Stanley, some nicely tuneful tracks that almost get a bit funky at points. There's a bit of vocals on the record – courtesy of Dee Dee Bridgewater and others – and guests include Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Harvey Mason, Tom Scott, and Airto. Titles include "More Hot Fun", "Slow Dance", "He Lives On", "Dayride", "Got To Find My Own Place", "Closing Statement", and "A Serious Occasion". I Wanna Play For You is a wickedly funky album from Stanley Clarke – perhaps his most fully-formed album of the Columbia years, and a set that really brings together his jazz and soul styles! There's a definite R&B vibe going on, but it's also one that's still quite heavy on bass work from Stanley – a groove that's not far from Bootsy Collins at times, but perhaps with a bit more jazz inflections. Jamming is kept to a minimum, which is fine by us – and the album's filled with really tuneful tunes that have an almost George Duke-like appeal. Guests include Tom Scott and Stan Getz on saxes, George Duke on piano, Harvey Mason and Steve Gadd on drums, and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. Titles include "I Wanna Play For You", "Just A Feeling", "Strange Weather", "My Greatest Hits", "School Days", and "Blues For Mingus". CD

Pablo/OJC, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really well-titled set – as it offers up some more intimate takes on the Duke Ellington sound of the cusp of the 70s – with some especially nice trio and solo numbers that are well worth the price of the whole collection! The album starts with the amazing "Moon Maiden" – a track that has Ellington playing celeste, and reciting this weird little cosmic poem – almost in a Sun Ra-type aesthetic, and key proof that Duke was still stretching out a lot in his later years! There's also some excellent trio tracks that really get at that highly modern mode that Ellington hit at his Live At The Whitney session – mixed with a few more larger group numbers that, while not exactly intimate, still have a nicely laid back feel. In addition to "Moon Maiden", other tracks include "Tenz", "Eulb", "Layin On Mellow", "Edward The First", "Symphonette", and "Some Summer Fun". CD

Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1970s/1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set of some the coolest material that the legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson cut throughout the 70s – from fiercely energetic, large combo takes on standards, to looser, more simmering styles of timeless jazz, to spacey jazz funk! Not to be confused with Ferguson's similarly titled early 60s set, this Maynard is a compilation of his creatively exploratory 70s years – on records like New Vintage, Live At Jimmy's, Carnival and the Bob James-produced Primal Scream – really showing the breadth of his astonishing range. Great stuff played with large groups and with Maynard at his most diverse. Includes "Airegin", "Stay Loose With Bruce", 'Round Midnight", "The Cheshire Cat Walk", "Chameleon", "Birdland", "Naima", "Got The Spirit" and more. This CD edition has 2 bonus tracks: the fun, funky "Rocky II Disco" and "Gabriel". CD

Elektra, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that no home should be without – and a stunning set that still carries all the raw power it did way back in 1969! The album's an apocalyptic vision of the future – a future it helped to shape, give its influence over the years – and from start to finish, the whole thing is brilliant – from the raw energy of the band, to the sneering lyrics of Iggy Pop, to the perfect production by John Cale – who's opening up a whole new side of his genius with his studio work here. The set begins with the boldly declarative "1969" – maybe one of our favorite Stooges songs ever – then moves into the landmark "I Wanna Be Your Dog", over to the ten minute freakout of "We Will Fall", to the classic "No Fun", through the cuts "Real Cool Time", "Ann", "Not Right", and "Little Doll". Imitated by many, but never done this well again – and a record that will most likely still be blowing the minds of our grandkids! CD

The debut of a legend – and a record that, we hate to admit it, must have actually had some political and cultural punch at the time – especially as the group had yet to go onto super-stardom, and were here stepping out with a butch camp, all-gay style that still had some power in the immediate post-Stonewall years. The approach here is similar to their later hits, but also nicely grounded in the standard disco mode of the time – thanks to some vocal arrangements from Phil Hurtt, and soulful string and horn backings from Horace Ott. Tracks are long, and as gay as you'd expect – but it's also not like the group's making fun of themselves as much yet either. Cherry Red (UK), 1980. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A great little set that brings together the big bang of electro pop that hit the UK scene at the start of the 80s – work from that moment when previous, more experimental strands of music from the initial post-punk years started cleaning things up, going for hooks, and making some pretty darn catchy music in the process! Yet the work here is also maybe still far from some of the overplayed big hits of a few years later – that key moment when early experimenters were crafting some great tunes, but still not sounding too commercial – and sometimes enticing other artists who didn't always record in this mode to join in on the fun! And if you think you know all the sounds from this time, this box set might give you a big surprise – as there's plenty of work here that we didn't expect – not just more obscure tunes by bigger names, but also some obscure artists who fit right into the groove – all given plenty of coverage in the large booklet of notes. 3CD set features 58 tracks in all - with work by The Passage, Berlin Blondes, Buggles, M, Silicon Teens, Rockets, John Foxx, Science, Fad Gadget, Zeus, OMD, Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls, Dark Day, Der Plan, Kevin Harrison, Japan, Dalek I, Taxi Girl, Systems, Karel Fialka, Nini Raviolette, The Korgis, Alex Fergusson, The Metronomes, Lori & The Chameleons, and others. This wonderful Christmas record comes from the early part of the 60s, with the grander period production touches to show for it – groovy chorus backing vocals, sound effects, and a big, bright sound – on Christmas classics, original material, fun spoken intros and interludes. The album is every bit as great as you might think – as it's got the full flavor of the campy television classic – with loads of the original music from the show – the themes you remember, as you heard them, and not a bunch of watered-down tracks inspired by the show – plus (and this is the best part!), the record has loads of dialogue from the TV show in between the tracks – cool exclamations from Adam West, Burt Ward, and others – which makes listening to the record as fun as watching the show! Hard-jamming jazz rock from Back Door – 3 prime era Warner albums in a 2CD set! Graced with lots of free solo work on alto and soprano sax by Ron Aspery, and a pretty strong power-trio instrumental format from Tony Hicks on drums and Colin Hodgkinson on bass, the group's early-to-mid 70s triumphs are mighty to this day. The self-titled debut is a jamming affair with genuine strains of funk and pretty great playing – and overall, it almost sounds like a rock take on the ESP sound at times! Titles include "Back Door", "Jive Grind", "Askin The Way", "Vienna Breakdown", "Plantagenet", and the classic Beastie Boys' sample track "Slivadiv". 8th Street Nites more than lives up to its predecessor, with a lots of bass-driven grooves and a couple charged takes on classic Robert Johnson and Leadbelly. Titles include "Linin' Track", "Forget Me Daisy, "Roberta", "Dancin' In The Van", "The Bed Creaks Louder", "Adolphus Beal" and more. Another Fine Mess arrived a couple years later and brings some Fender Rhodes to the mix, with titles including "I'm Gonna Stay A Long, Long Time", another fine jammy jazz rock take on the blues in "TB Blues", plus "Manager's Shirt", "Streamline Guitar", "The Dashing White Sergeant" and more. A brilliant new vision for the legendary Banda Black Rio – the pioneering samba, soul and funk combo that broke so much ground in the 70s and remain vital to this day – led here by William Magalhaes, in a mode that celebrates decades of the best Brazilian music, while fearlessly moving it forward! William's father Oberdan Magalhaes was a driving force behind the original Banda Black Rio, and we couldn't really imagine a more appropriate new vision for the group than his son's. William wrote or co-wrote each track and he sings, plays keys and synth, guitar, bass, drums and more. The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. A great revival of this classic British soul ensemble – taken into even funkier territory than before, thanks to help from Bluey, Noel McKoy, and other UK soul legends! The sound is way more funky than you might expect, but also pretty top-shelf too – not small combo deep funk, but a large ensemble of horns next to the tighter rhythm core – all in a blend that reminds us of some of the best Philly backings from the 70s! Vocals are by Camille Hinds, Noel McKoy, and Linton Beckles – but the tracks almost seem to have an equal focus on the instrumentation at the core – a great blend of funk and soul that's possibly even more impressive, given that the album was recorded live. A monster bit of funk that's unlike anything else we can think of! Beginning Of The End hailed from The Bahamas, but don't hold that against them – because instead of being a Caribbean cliche, they took the best part of the island rhythms, and used them to forge an incredible approach to funk! They've got a choppy sound that's the result of some incredibly dexterous guitar, bass, and drums – and which you'll recognize instantly from their one-time hit "Funky Nassau", a killer funk track that never gets old, no matter how many bands cover it over the years! That gem kicks off the album, which then rolls into the monster funky "part 2", which is even better! Other titles are equally wonderful – and include "Come Down", "Surrey Ride", "Monkey Tamarind", and "In The Deep". Essential – and one that you'll be spinning for years! LP, Vinyl record album

The synths and keyboards by Francis Monkman is the secret weapon on this effort for sure – percussionist/producer/arranger Bennett is the guiding force, but the sound of those keys and synths are the neon bright leading light, while Bennett's percussion and Alan Jone's bass bring a nice funky bottom end. One of the best groups to come out on Irma during the mid 90's, and a tight Italian ensemble with a classic jazz funk groove. The band is co-led by guitarist Andrea Raffini and keyboard player Goffredo "Picchio" Bagnoli, and the sound is nice and jazzy, with a feel that's similar to classic instrumental LPs on Verve or Milestone from the late 60's. A lost bit of ensemble funk from the end of the 70s – served up in a mix of bass-heavy club and boogie styles! The group have a rolling groove that's a bit like some of the work by Instant Funk or other clubby funk acts – but the overall feel is a bit tighter and more small group-oriented, even though the end result is as tight and professional as anything coming out on some of the bigger labels at the time – making for a great mix of indie and mainstream funky club styles! Our favorite cuts may actually be the mellower ones – which have some great soul harmonies – but even the uptempo tracks are pretty nice, with a strong Philly-inspired sound overall – and titles include "Postcard Love Affair", "My Fantasy", "Push", "There You Go", "Fantasize", "I Judge The Funk", and "You're Always on My Mind". Beautiful work from Blue Mandala Project – an Italian group led by pianist Pietro Vincenti, an artist we really loved for his older Brazilian-styled sounds in the group Quintetto X! The vibe here has some of the sound of the older group, but there's also maybe more funk and soul elements at play – given that Pietro sometimes plays sweet electric keyboards, and that the album features soulful lead vocals from Mimma Pisto – a female singer who provides English vocals for most of the tracks! The core approach is still jazz, but the vocals really give the whole thing a very personal vibe – and all songs are written by Pietro, both music and lyrics – with titles that include "Cold Blue", "The Human Journey", "Lonely Girl", "The Trip", "Breve Amore", "Murcia", "Kali", "South Shout", and "Summer Afternoon". Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 18.98
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

The sound is a bit more modern, but the approach is very much the same – superbly crafted grooves that start way down in the rhythm section, then bubble on up with lots of jazzy solo work over the top – and lead vocals from Paul McLean, who's also joined by some of the other members of the group. The whole thing is a great meeting of the minds – with lots of the sophisticated, sometimes jazz-based touches that generation of British soul was so good at – on tunes that include "Lifted Up", "Summer", "Smilin", "For Tomorrow", "Sign Of The Times", "Step On Board", "BFA", and "This Is What We Do". The record has James working with the pre-JBs James Brown Band – a tight assemblage of players who really know how to craft an off-kilter groove. A post-Blue Note effort, and Donald's changing things up a bit with his 125th Street Orchestra and Uptown Singers – funking along in a way you'd expect from the longwinded title! Byrd loostens up the smoother backgrounds of his recent Larry Mizell helmed work, and in their place are grooves that have more of a heavy slap bass sound, punchier horns and guitars! There are lotes nice moments that are a bit more restrained than the comparably full-on funk approach – and these have a spacey fusiony soul quality that reminds us of similar work that Byrd was doing with The Blackbyrds at the time. One of the best cuts is "Your Life Is My Ecstasy", which has some great bubbling Moog behind it, which creates a sound that you've heard sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest. Other nice ones are "Loving You", which features vocals by Jim Gilstrap, and a remake of Duke Pearson's "Cristo Redentor", a big hit for Don in the 60s, which is redone here in an excellent slow funk mode that feels like Bob James' work on CTI. "Canottaggio" has this mix of drums and percussion at the start that begins a bit like "Jungle Fever" – but then the tune takes on all these cool keyboard touches that really mark it as funky nugget from the Italian sound library scene of the 70s! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Stelvio CiprianiLa Notte Dell'Ultimo Giorno/Processo Per Direttissima ... CD
Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $28.99
Two rare 70s gems from the great Stelvio Cipriani – back to back on a single CD! First up is La Notte Dell'Ultimo Giorno – a record that begins with some of the slinkier modes that we love in Cipriani's music, but which also gets nicely funky at points too – almost always graced by the kind of keyboard lines that make Stelvio such a standout! The keys include electric harpsichord, organ, and what sounds like some of that oddly-tuned piano that Ennio Morricone might use – flowering out in this beautifully balanced mix of modes. Processo Per Direttissima is a film about terrorism and police brutality, but one that gets this wonderfully sweet score from Cipriani – served up in flowing basslines, light percussion, gentle strings, and the kind of forward-moving elements we love so much in Stelvio's music – a quality here that sounds much more like his love or erotic scores than you'd guess from such a thriller! CD features 25 tracks in all – over 70 minutes of music. CD

Trading Places (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $23.99
An obscure set of work from George Clinton and the P-Funk empire – a selection of live material from years when George wasn't hitting the studio as much, but still doing great concerts all around the globe! There's not much in the way of dates or players here, but if you caught a Clinton performance in the 80s or early 90s, you'll know the kind of groove going on here – classic P-Funk, maybe even more energized in a live setting – on titles that include "Ain't Nothin But A Jam Y'All", "Good Love", "Bop Gun", "Aquaboogie", "Flashlight", "Standing On The Verge", "Maggot Brain", and "State Of The Nation". ✨✧ Billy CobhamFunky Thide Of Sings ... CD
Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1975. New Copy ... About March 5, 2021
Billy Cobham's always got something funky going on in his music – and this 70s classic for Atlantic Records has the drummer at the height of his powers – really mixing together jazz, rock, and funk impulses – all without some of the overindulgence of his more jamming records of the time! There's still some great trippy sounds at times – some fierce future jazz passages that have Billy's drums really propelling keyboards and guitar – but overall the tracks are short and focused, with a nice nod back to the kind of energy that Cobham brought to his sessions with other artists. One exception is the great "Moody Modes" – a sweet long electric track that almost feels like George Duke on MPS – alongside other cuts that include "A Funky Kind Of Thing", "Some Skunk Funk", and "Light At The End Of The Tunnel". Con Funk ShunConfunkshunizeya – The Mercury Anthology ... CD
Mercury/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Super-sharp work from Con Funk Shun – one of the best of the mainstream funk acts to emerge in the second half of the 70s – working with the sort of style that was trained in the funky 45 underground, then given a bigger, fuller push to album-length glory! The set is a superb selection of their work for Mercury records – and the tracks here also really show why Con Funk Shun were always a cut above – as they had a way of bringing strong soul vocals to play that often illuminated the tunes very strongly – especially when the group would harmonize together. The set features 32 tracks in all – including "So Easy", "Chase Me", "Ffun (12" mix)", "Confunkshunizeya", "Loveshine", "Shake & Dance With Me", "Sure Feels Good To Me", "Electric Lady", "Burnin Love", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Ms Got The Body", "By Your Side", "Bad Lady", "California 1", "Too Tight", "Lady's Wild", "Let Me Put Love On Your Mind", "Who Has The Time", "Ain't Nobody Baby", and "Got To Be Enough". Con Funk ShunFever ... CD
Mercury/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy ... $10.99
One of the sweetest-grooving albums ever from Con Funk Shun – proof that the group was almost better when they tightened things up a bit! The set was produced by Deodato at the height of his hit-making soul powers – and it's got a sharpness that really helps bring the Con Funk Shun groove into focus – a style that's not nearly as commercial as Deodato's work with Kool & The Gang, but which shares a similar blend of jazz and modern soul elements! Most tracks groove nicely, even some of the mellower ones – and Deodato's got a perfect balance in the sound of the set – keyboards, beats, and bass all in the right places, with plenty of soulful vocals flowing warmly over the top. Titles include "Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold", "Hard Lovin", "If I'm Your Lover", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Indiscreet Sweet", and "Baby I'm Hooked". CD

Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – working here under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". CD

Pickwick, 1978. Sealed ... $14.99
Early stuff by Con Funk Shun, recorded in 1973, and a lot funkier than some of their later work. The set went down in Memphis, and the overall sound is kind of a Bar-Kays-ish ensemble funk style, although with less of a heavy guitar groove. We're not sure if there ever was another pressing of the material – as this 1978 Pickwick issue is the only one we've ever seen. Tracks include the 9 minute long instrumental "Seascape", plus "Funky Things On Your Mind", "Love In me", "Time", and "Get Down With It". LP, Vinyl record album

Ron Dante looks a lot like he's in an Archie comic on the cover – and that's because Ron was the lead singer of The Archies, as well as some other great groups of the time – and also did a lot of very groovy work for commercials too! This package features gems from all those different sides of Ron's career – mostly work from the late 60s and early 70s, with lots of upbeat poppy grooves – and the kind of sing-song lyrics that made The Archies records so great! CD1 features rare commercials, plus work by The Archies, Cufflinks, Starbird, and Chan Clan – plus collaborations with Andy Kim and Bruce Johnston – and CD2 features unreleased Archies recordings, plus some other cool commercials too! The whole thing's a wonderful dip way past any Archies hits collection you might ever find – 54 tracks in all – with titles that include "Tracy", "Summer In The City", "Kent Cigarettes", "The Stick Shift", "Sally Ann", "Let Me Bring You Up", "California Nights", "The Grundy", "The Angel", "The Hamburger Hop", "Archies Funhouse Theme", "Ballad Of 51st Street", and lots lots more! United Artists/RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
Great work from the second chapter of The Spencer Davis Group – the time immediately after Steve Winwood left to form Traffic, and the combo stepped forward into some even headier music of their own! This period of the SDG isn't nearly as well known as their early hits – and the box set is a really surprising revelation overall – music that has some of the R&B currents of the earlier group, but which is also infused with a headier, trippier style too – not just in the instrumentation, but in the way the records are put together – with cool elements that space things out slightly, but never get too indulgent! The mix is a bit like that on the earliest work of The Move – or that shift that Small Faces were taking after moving to the Immediate label – and as with previous work from the Spencer Davis Group, there's as much great Hammond on the tunes as there is guitar, thanks to the talents of new member Eddie Hardin. Some of the best cuts almost hit a freakbeat mode – with a very cool mix of mod and psych – and the 3CD set features the full albums Funky and With Their New Face On – plus material from the Round The Mulberry Bush soundtrack, lots more singles, some BBC sessions, and even some alternate and unreleased tracks too. 68 tracks in all – titles that include "Letters From Edith", "Time Seller", "Taking Out Time", "After Tea", "Sanity Inspector", "What A Way To Die", "Firefly", "Magpie", "Groove Extra", "The Girls Song", "Don't Want You No More", "Der Wassermann", and "Picture Of Heaven". Chapter One/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of albums from this very unusual group – plus bonus tracks too! First up is the strangely-titled Wide Open N Way – the first album from Day Of Phoenix – a really unique Danish group with roots in both beat group and psych ensembles, but who come across here with this spare, lean style that's nicely harmonic on both the vocals and instrumentation! There's a warm glow to the lyrics that almost evokes some of the more spiritual currents of CSN, but the group are also a lot more down to earth – and occasionally mix in the odd harder guitar line with the more dominant acoustic guitar that sets most of the scene, and really dominates the instrumentation to focus the flow of the tunes! Titles include "Mind Funeral", "Tick Tack", "If You Ask Me", "Cellophane #1 Cellophane #2", and "Wide Open N Way". The Neighbour's Son has a vibe that's maybe a bit more UK-oriented overall – both in the way the vocals are presented, and in the confidence the group seems to have grown into with their songwriting skills – never too tight or commercial, but focused with a strong energy that really knocks most of the tunes up to the next level. Titles include "Magic Wind", "Drifting", "Zombie", "Paradox", "Use Your Sense", and "Turn Me On". Package features very detailed notes – and bonus tracks that include "Tell Me", "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today", "Chicken Skin", and "Deep Within The Storm". CD

The incredible follow-up to I Wish My Brother George Was Here – and a record that was initially underappreciated, mostly because it was such a radical departure from the George – but it's one that we loved from day one and we're thrilled is getting some love all these years later! Whereas I Wish My Brother George Was Here was sort of the loopy, semi-comical cousin to the tonally heavier G-Funk sound, No Need For Alarm has a tighter, somewhat little harder hitting sound – more akin to the jazzy Hiero beats you've come to know and love! One of the more far out-sounding records we've heard on Far Out Records – a wild one from Rio's Dos Cafundos! It's a sometimes funky, sometimes noisy, but always evolving sound – with raw tropical funk mixed with diverse strains of noise rock and jazz, a la Zorn and Zappa. It's never predictable, even if they proudly wear myriad influences on their sleeves! It's got lots of great acoustic and electric guitar work, plus heavy drums and percussion, flutes, violin and more in the mix. There's a lot going on here that would make the group sound right at home on Ipecac Records as much as they do on Far Out – but the Brazilian roots are still very strong! A hefty collection of work from Down To The Bone – one that focuses on all the great tracks they issued on 12" singles, which really helped their sound set fire to dancefloors over the years! DTTB were a big force here on the Chicago's steppers scene of the 90s – and some of the cuts here were a big part of that role – served up here on a 2CD package that features the digital debut of many tracks that were previously only available on vinyl! Roy Ayers makes a great appearance on the track "Electric Vibes" – served up here in the "DJ Spinna rmx", "Harry Coade's dancefloor mix", and "DJ Spinna Dub". Flora Purim sings on "The Flow" – in "Agent K voc" and "Agent K inst" mixes, plus "Mr Gone's samba de sueco rmx". Paquito/Sunnyside, 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great little album from Paquito D'Rivera – not nearly as gimmicky as you might expect from the title, and a soulful set that's right in line with some of his first few gems as a leader in the US many years back! There's definitely some tango quality to some of the tunes – but it's mostly just a bit of bandoneon used lightly in the instrumentation – leaving most of the work here to sparkle in that Havana-influenced blend of jazz and Latin roots that's always made D'Rivera's music so great. Paquito plays alto and clarinet, alongside trumpet and valve trombone from Diego Urcola, piano from Ed Simon and Alon Yavanai, bass from Oscar Stagnaro, and drums from Mark Walker. Hector Del Curto plays bandoneon on the record – and tracks include "Milonga 10", "What About That", "Pere", "Revirado", "Funk Tango", "Mariela's Dream", "Como Un Bolero", and "Giant Steps". CD

EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! ✨✧ Abstract OrchestraDilla ... LP
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

Monstrous funk from Morocco – unreleased material recorded in 1973, with a sound that should have revolutionized North Africa at the time! The group works here in a really raw blend of heavy percussion and riffing guitar – produced with lots of edge and echo, and delivered with the spirited vibe you'd expect from the ensemble's appearance on the cover! There's plenty of criss-crossing between the lead and chorus vocals on the set – but the guitar gets plenty of space too, and has this really sharp quality that's clearly informed by psych, but funkier overall – and very different than any work of the sort from farther down the continent. Drums are super-heavy, and the basslines match as well – on titles that include "Albaki", "Taali", "Chamaa", "Aflana", "Kaddaba", "Moulate Salef", and "Al Hadaoui". CD

The return of a legend – and a tremendously groovy little record! Brazilian keyboardist/composer Antonio Adolfo's been making records for years – but easily his greatest albums were those cut at the end of the 60s with his Brazuka group – a cool combination of funky rhythms, electric keyboards, spacious production, and female vocals – all wrapped up with that glorious Blue Brazil sound of the EMI/Odeon label. Here, Adolfo recaptures that sound beautifully – returning to modes he hasn't touched in decades – and getting tremendous treatment from the Far Out label, who really help him hit that classic sound right. The record's an instantly timeless set that rivals all of Antonio's wonderful work from many years back – recorded with Adolfo on keyboards, live jazzy rhythms, a bit of strings, and twin harmony vocals from daughters Carol Saboya and Luisa Saboia – soaring out beautifully with a really groovy sound. Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! The lineup's nice and jazzy, too – and features lots of tenor work from Timo Lassy, next to vibes, trumpet, guitar, and warm lines on both Hammond organ and Wurlitzer piano – all with a feel that's part funk, part soundtrack – yet served up in the best Schema way, which means that things go far past just being a retro rehash of the past! Titles include "Fire In Acapulco", "Heat In The City", "Everybody's Going Uptown", "Red Light District", and "The Crowd Pleaser". LP, Vinyl record album
Also available Heat In The City ... CD 18.99

✨✧ Afrodyssey OrchestraUnder The Sun (with download) ... LP
Altercat (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Great diaspora sounds from Afrodyssey Orchestra – a group who bring so much more to their music than most of their contemporaries – in ways that both tap into their native cultural history in Greece, and really open up some of the deeper jazz currents of their songs! Instrumentation includes the percussion elements you might expect – but we're even more captivated by the work on keyboards and tenor – which really sparkle throughout, and which make the record often feel like some futurist fusion reimagining of Afro Funk inspirations – with a nice lean sound that's more small combo than "orchestra"! Titles include "One For Ry", "Under The Sun", "Sisters & Brothers", "Three Tigers & Three Baby Tigers", "Soil Festivities", and "Mama Africa". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rob AgerbeekHome Run ... CD
Blue Jack Jazz/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A definite home run from Dutch pianist Rob Agerbeek – a hip set recorded in 1971, and one that's done with a very soulful groove! The group's a quintet, and Rob really sparkles in this setting – pushing the players with a subtle skill that recalls Horace Silver at his Blue Note best – especially in the way that Agerbeek mixes upbeat grooving with more sensitive sounds on the set! Other players include Dick Vennik on tenor and flute, Willem Reinen on flugelhorn, Rob Langereis on bass, and Eric Ineke on drums – a really great group of players who fit toghether wonderfully here – pushing the grooves of the tunes strongly forward with warm energy, but also breaking out with some sharp solos of their own. Titles include the funky classic "The Chair Dance" – plus "Little Miss Dee", "Just Robbish", "Minor Rush", and "The Blue Countess". CD

Sharhabil AhmedKing Of Sudanese Jazz ... LP
Habibi Funk (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Really fantastic music, with a sound that's as hip as the image on the cover – not jazz as we know it here in the US, but a wonderful hybrid of our own musical roots with elements of Sudanese music – all delivered with a very postmodern mish-mash of styles, and a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The blend is a bit like some of the hybrids that were occurring in Ethiopian music at the time – and is maybe as unique as some of those classic recordings – with vocals that have a stretched-out style with lots of inflections, set up next to jagged rhythms that often have as much guitar in the groove as percussion, topped with offbeat reed passages that use lots of very cool tuning! Maybe the best release so far from this wonderful label – with titles that include "El Bambi", "Ya Shagini", "Aziza", "Malak Ya Saly", "Argos Farfish", and "Kamar Dawa". LP, Vinyl record album

Tony Aiken & FutureLiberation ... CD
Boom Shot, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99
You might remember Tony Aiken for his classic funk album Unity, from the 70s – and here, he's back again – after nearly 40 years away from the studio! The album's got a style that's a lot more reggae-influenced than before – maybe not totally a reggae record, given the other influences that Tony brings to bear – but a style that's definitely Jamaican overall, especially in the rhythms! The project features a big number of guests – as you can probably guess from the images on the front cover – all given a soulful spirit by Tony's lead. Package lists no song titles at all – but there are 10 tracks total. CD
