✨✧ Charlie Haden Quartet WestSophisticated Ladies ... CD
EmArcy, 2010. Used ... $6.99
Beautiful work from bassist Charlie Haden and his Quartet West – a lovely look back at the styles and chanteuses of the 50s & 60s noirish jazz – with some lush strings accompaniment and guest vocalists including Cassandra Wilson, Melody Gardot, Norah Jones, Ruth Cameron and Diana Krall! It's the kind of thing that could come of hokey without a genuine love if the material in the mix, and the Haden & co. pull it off wonderfully. The quartet players include Ernie Watts on tenor, Alan Broadbent on piano and Rodney Green on drums. Includes "If I'm Lucky" with Melody Gardot, "Sophisticated Lady", "Today I Am A Man", "Ill Wind" with Norah Jones, "My Love And I" with Cassandra Wilson, "Theme From 'Markham'", "Angel Faces", "Goodbye" with Diana Krall, "Wahoo" and more. Charles Lloyd & The MarvelsI Long To See You ... CD
Blue Note, 2016. Used ... $8.99
A Blue Note debut from legendary reedman Charles Lloyd – who definitely wants to bring something new to his work on the label! The set features his Marvels combo – a quintet that features very prominent work from guitarist Bill Frisell, whose edgey tones here make for a very different sound than the use of guitar on some of Lloyd's recent records – especially as the group also features steel guitar from Greg Leisz, who shades things in with some washes of sound that really echo Frisell's tones too! The rest of the lineup features Reuben Rodgers on bass and Eric Harland on drums – and Lloyd plays both tenor and alto flute, with a warmth that really offsets some of the starker sounds of Frisell. The record features guest vocal work from Norah Jones and Willie Nelson – who sing on a song apiece – but the core appeal here is the interplay between Lloyd and guitar, but in a way that's very different than his 60s work with Gabor Szabo. Titles include "Of Course Of Course", "La Llorna", "Abide With Me", "Barche Lamsel", "All My Trials", and "Sombrero Sam". CD

Harold Mabern with Gregory Porter & Kurt EllingAfro Blue ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". CD also features Alexis Cole on "Such Is Life" – and the instrumental tracks "The Chief", "Mozzin", and "Bobby Benny Jymie Lee Bu". CD

Kandace SpringsWoman Who Raised Me ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Maybe the straightest jazz set we've heard to date from Kandace Springs – a record that's got a great old school vibe overall, and the sorts of moody, dark-tinged qualities that takes us back to vintage material by Abbey Lincoln or Nina Simone – something we might not have said about Kandace on previous albums! Springs plays piano, and mostly keeps things in a tight combo mode – with her vocals in the lead, but with occasional guest help from artists who include Chris Potter on tenor, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, David Sanborn on alto, Christian McBride on bass, and Norah Jones on piano and vocals – on tunes penned by artists as diverse as Bob Dorough, Hoagy Carmichael, Lauryn Hill, and Sade. Titles include "Devil May Care", "The Nearness Of You", "Strange Fruit", "Killing Me Softly", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Ex-Factor", "Pearls", "I Put A Spell On You", and "Gentle Rain". ✨✧ Q TipRenaissance ... LP
Universal/Motown, 2008. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A damn good record by Q-Tip – his first official album of the new millenium (not counting the unfairly mooted Kamaal The Abstract) – featuring both spacey keyboard grooves and some Native Tongues style boom bap! Q-Tip really does kind of pick up where he could have left off years ago, and it's a reward of our faith in him that it's still fresh after all these years, without drastically altering the formula. The key may be the focus – it's a filler free affair with solid track after solid track. Q-Tip handles most of the production – utilizing a bed of deep samples, groovy keys and head nodding beats. Q-Tip is in fine, relaxed form here, nothing left to prove. Here's hoping he records more often from here on on out! Titles include "Johnny Is Dead", "Won't Trade" (a should be classic single), "Getting' Up", "Official", "You", "We Fight/We Love" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Move", "Dance On Glass", "Life Is Better" feat Norah Jones, , "Believe" feat D'Angelo, "Shaka" and more. George BensonGive Me The Night ... CD
Warner, 1980. Used ... $5.99
Yipes! This one made everyone a bucket of money – especially Quincy Jones, whose new Qwest imprint the record was one of the first to grace. George has come a long way from his roots with Jack McDuff here – but in a way that kind of has us impressed, as he's grooving away slickly on guitar, laying down some smooth vocals that we never would have imagined from his mid 60s recordings. Includes the massive hit "Give Me The Night", a cover of "Moody's Mood", and the tracks "Star Of A Story (X)", "Midnight Love Affair", "What's On Your Mind", and "Dinorah, Dinorah". The sound of a million supermarkets and elevators during the 80s! CD
