✨✧ Nobuo Hara & His Sharps & FlatsGlory Of Sharps & Flats – Nobuo Hara & His Sharps & Flats ... CD
Columbia/Sony (Japan), 1960s. Used ... $18.99
A double-length set from this famous Japanese group – one that features a range of 60s recordings from the ensemble, all of which show why they were easily one of the best big bands working in the East! There's a charm here that's halfway between Stan Kenton and Count Basie – the sense of tone and timing of the former, and the loping soulful energy of the latter – tied together beautifully in ways that echo older American jazz traditions, but still sparkle with the most contemporary elements of their 60s recording dates. The set features 18 numbers in all – and titles include "Tumblin Tambourine", "Satin Doll", "Goodbye", "Moon River", "Blue Flame", "My Funny Valentine", and "In The Mood". CD

Nobuo Hara & His Sharps & Flats with Oliver NelsonOliver Nelson In Tokyo ... CD
Columbia/Sony (Japan), 1970. Used ... $24.99
Oliver Nelson makes a great appearance here with the Sharps & Flats group of Nobuo Hara – an excellent Japanese ensemble who are clearly inspired by Nelson's soulful arrangements of the 60s! Oliver's the reed soloist on the album, not the leader – and it's great to hear him getting a bit of his own sort of treatment while stretching out as an individual voice – free to remind us that he's also a hell of a soloist when he wants to be, with reed talents that work perfectly with the larger sense of tone from the bigger group! Nelson plays soprano sax wonderfully on a few cuts – and titles include "Scarborough Fair", "Charade", "Summertime", "Round Midnight", "Yesterday", "Sermonette", and "How Insensitive". CD

✨✧ Nobuo Hara with Sharps & FlatsSoul Modern Jazz 3 – Members ... CD
Columbia/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $22.99
Hard driving jazz from the Japanese scene of the 50s! The album's one of the best recorded by Nobu Hara and the legendary Sharpes & Flats group – a really swinging set of big band jazz that drives with the power of some of the 60s recordings by the Clarke-Boland Big Band, and which offers plenty of space for the soloists to swing out during the set with really dynamic energy – especially as the saxes and trumpets break from the group to start their own sort of presence in the music! Unfortunately, all the notes are in Japanese – so we can't tell you the exact lineup or the song titles – but the album's a strong one, and a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese scene in the postwar years! A rare postwar jazz treasure from Japan – one of those great 50s albums that bring together some of the rising talents on the Tokyo scene – almost as proof that, musically at least, Japan was really getting back on its feet! The range of talents here is great – and there's almost a Verve-like blend of swing and bop, small ensemble and big band – with material that includes "Barbaroa" and "Mago Uta" by Hiroshi Watanabe & His Star Dusters, "Memories Of You" and "Air Mail Special" from Shoji Suzuki & His Rhythm Aces, "The Main In The Raincoat" from Keiichiro Ebihara, "Stardust" from Chiemi Eri, "Mambo De Flute" and "Who Parks The Car" by Shin Watanabe & His Six Joes, and "Floor Show" from Nobuo Hara & His Sharps & Flats. Hozan Yamamoto & Sharps & FlatsBeautiful Bamboo Flute ... CD
Victor/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi".
