Helena De LimaUma Noite No Cangaceiro ... LP
RGE (Brazil), Mid 60s. Very Good ... $19.99
A live and lively little bossa vocal set – recorded at the Cangaceiro nightclub, with backing by a really great small combo! The style here is similar to other live bossa jazz sets from the time – such as Elis Regina's classic with the Zimbo Trio – and although Helena's vocal style is a bit full and sometimes emotive, the spontaneous nature of the performance really helps keep things lean and clean! The combo here is named after the club – and features Raul Mascarenhas on piano and supposedly Rildo Hora on a bit of harmonica – although he doesn't seem to appear on the record as much as the cover might indicate. Titles include "Oitavo Botequim", "Penumbra", "Ponto E Chuva", "Aconteceu", "Desilusao", "Verdade Da Vida", and 2 longer "Pot-Pourri" tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

George DukeNo Rhyme No Reason – The Elektra/Warner Years 1985 to 2000 (3CD set) ... CD
Elektra/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/1990s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 30.99
George Duke at the end of the century – still going strong with the wonderful mix of jazz, funk, and soul that he pioneered in the 70s – a style that really grows and shifts in mighty nice way over the course of the material in the set! Duke moved from Epic to Elektra and Warner during the time of these tracks – and while some of the material has George picking up more 80s-styled keyboard elements and rhythms, the set also progresses towards other material that's maybe even more back to basics in a jazz sort of way – first electric, then more acoustic – but with some nice variations that show that Duke, one of the real pioneers, was still doing a lot more with soulful jazz than most of his contemporaries! You'll definitely find a few vocal cuts here – George always had a great ear for a singer – and throughout, the man's skills on the keyboard continue to be strong – especially tilted towards that nice sense of space that Duke picked up after his jamming years in the mid 70s. As with other titles on the Soulmusic label, the choice of cuts is great – really focusing on the kind of special album tracks that show a deeper side of the artist than the singles – with a total of 45 tracks that include "Mystery Eyes", "Say Hello", "The Touch", "From Dusk To Dawn", "It's Our World", "So I'll Pretend", "Montreux Nights", "Love Can Be So Cold", "No Rhyme No Reason", "6 O'Clock", "Fame", "560 SL", "Rise Up", "Guilty", "I Surrender", "Thief In The Night", "The Times We've Known", "All About You", "If You Will", "She's Amazing", "Thinin About You", "Fill The Need", and "Never Be Another". Nick FinzerNo Arrival ... CD
Posi tone, 2018. Used ... $9.99 11.99
Trombonist Nick Finzer's got a round, warm sound throughout – a well-blown approach to his instrument that comes on with all the rich colors of a classic player like Curtis Fuller or JJ Johnson! Yet there's also a freshness to the record, too – partly because Nick wrote about half the songs himself, and partly because the whole thing has that crisp crackle that we love so much from the Posi-tone label – a rock-solid quality, delivered by a lineup that includes Victor Gould on piano, Lucas Pino on tenor, Alex Wintz on guitar, Dave Baron on bass, and Jimmy MacBride on drums. Titles include "Never Enough", "Rinse & Repeat", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "No Arrival", "Tomorrow Next Year", and a version of the Prince tune "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold". CD

Hall & OatesNo Goodbyes ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A groovy little collection that features a few previously-unissued tracks from the great early years of Hall & Oates at Atlantic Records – plus a few tracks from other label releases as well! The unissued numbers are all from 1973, and done with Arif Mardin's help in the studio – in this warmly swirling groove that really illustrates the way that Hall & Oates were able to pick up the best aspect of Philly soul production, and turn them towards their own blue-eyed lyrics and vocals. These cuts include "It's Uncanny", "I Want To Know You For A Long Time", and "Love You Like A Brother". The set then features some great material from the early Atlantic albums – including "Las Vegas Turnaround", "Can't Stop The Music", "She's Gone", "Lilly", "When The Morning Comes", and "70s Scenario". JonesyWaltz For Yesterday – The Recordings 1972 to 1974 (No Alternative/Keeping Up/Growing/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dawn/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Three full albums from Jonesy – plus some great bonus tracks too! First up is their classic No Alternative – really great work from Jonesy – one of the groups who got a chance to record for the legendary Dawn label – one of the most groundbreaking British imprints at the start of the 70s! The sound here definitely lives up to that legacy – a proggish mode, but with more hard rock touches around the edges – long tracks that certainly make good use of keyboards and mellotron, but which also feature heavier guitar and basslines – and some boldly soulful vocals at times from Jamie Kaleth. Titles include "1958", "Pollution", "No Alternative", "Mind Of The Century", and "Ricochet". Keeping Up is an incredibly fantastic album – one that really has the group putting their sound together even more – with sublime mellotron lines, wicked guitar work, and an overall sharpness to their sound that may well come from help on arrangements from guitar genius Ray Russell! There's a fuller sound on the record than before, a stronger lyrical presence at the right moments, and the record even features some great electric trumpet work from Alan Bown – on titles that include "Critique", "Questions & Answers", "Masquerade", "Sunset & Evening Star", "Preview", "Children", and "Song". Last up is the album Growing – a record that's totally on the money on the more jamming tracks, and which also has some more spacious moments at all the right times – really at a level that has the group recording as if they were one of the giants of the British prog generation – which, in truth, they really should have been. Titles include "Know Who Your Friends Are", "Growing", "Hard Road", "Jonesy", "Can You Get That Together", and "Waltz For Yesterday". Box set features detailed notes – and bonus tracks that include "Reprise", "Every Day's The Same", and "Ricochet (single version)" – plus a full album of material recorded in 1974, titled Sudden Prayers Make God Jump. Hank MobleyStraight No Filter (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1966. Used ... $11.99
No filters here, as Hank Mobley's sound is clean, lean, and right on the money – hitting that newly-sophisticated groove of the Caddy For Daddy years in this sweet unissued set! The date was recorded in the 60s, but unissued by Blue Note for many years – another one of those head-scratching mysteries from the label, yet also a real treat to 80s jazz fans who finally got their hands on the sides – a whole new discovery of Hank Mobley's genius, further appreciated at a time when we weren't hearing more from him. The players are top-shelf all the way through – and include Freddie Hubbard or Donald Byrd on trumpet, Herbie Hancock or Barry Harris on piano, Paul Chambers or Butch Warren on bass, and Philly Joe Jones or Billy Higgins on drums. CD version really expands from the original LP – with 9 titles that include "Chain Reaction", "Third Time Around", "Hank's Waltz", "Yes Indeed", "Straight No Filter", "Syrup & Biscuits", and "The Feelin's Good". Sinatra at his lonely best – as emphasized by the cover image, which has him sitting alone at a bar, looking sadly into his drink. The album's got backings by Gordon Jenkins, a bit more flowery than some of Nelson Riddle's, but in that sad dreamy mode that Sinatra worked with on the Wee Small Hours album. The selection of tunes includes the Sammy Cahn/Jimmy Van Heusen original "When No One Cares", plus sublime readings of "Where Do You Go", "A Cottage For Sale", "I Can't Get Started", and "None But The Lonely Heart". Sonic Youth's follow-up to the ALMOST commercial breakthrough Dirty – sarcastically-titled, and overall effort mixes their time-honored noisy weirdness and accessible way with melody in new and compelling ways! Working again with producer Butch Vig, but moving away from the loud guitar ragers of Dirty into stranger territory. Almost worth it alone for "Bull In The Heather", one of the weirdest first singles for a major label rock album in the early 90s – but this whole thing is pretty great, and generally underrated in the SY annals. Other tracks include "Starfield Road", "Screaming Skull", "Tokyo Eye", "Waist", "Bone", "Winner's Blues", "Sweet Shine" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Black Fire/Backatcha (UK), 1976. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $49.99
A sweet set of spiritual jazz funk – a gem of a set from an Ohio group of the 70s, but one that was initially only issued on CD by the Black Fire label many years later! The ensemble's led by singer/pianist Clarence Young – and has a very message-oriented approach – sort of a blend of Roy Ayers-styled jazzy soul with touches of Philly harmony groups, and a bit more of the soul jazz of the Strata East years. The group's also got a wonderful vibist – one who really makes some great Roy Ayers inflections on the best cuts – especially those with ensemble vocals. 12-inch, Vinyl record

An album that really lives up to its name – as the music here definitely has a sense of shape in space – really careful construction of tracks with keyboards and electronics, in ways make for a very unique project overall! The album's got a headier vibe than you'd expect from work on a sound library label – maybe much more at home on Brian Eno's Obscure label, and even a match for some of the best of his early Ambient projects too – as Reinhard Vandbergen has a wonderful sense of sound, tone, and space – really letting these electronic elements flow out in a gentle way as they find shapes of their own. Elenco/Polygram (Brazil), 1967. Used ... $9.99
An amazingly beautiful album, recorded by Vinicius De Moraes, Dorival Caymmi, Oscar Castro-Neves, and The Quarteto Em Cy for some sort of a special show. Castro-Neves provides some excellent bossa backing, the Quarteto girls sing chorus and over the top, Vinicius does some recitations, and Caymmi sings lead vocals. If the whole thing sound's a bit heavy-handed, it's not – and instead is an amazing batch of heavenly bossa-tinged tracks, with all the intelligence and imagination of the best titles on the Elenco label. The whole thing's extremely lively, and has an other-worldly sound that matches Vinicius' classic Afro Sambas LP with Baden Powell. Tracks include "Bom Dia Amigo", "Berimbau", "Historia De Pescadores", "Formosa", "Broto Maroto", and "Aruanda". CD

Rare Memphis soul from Wee Willie Walker – two cuts from the vaults of Goldwax Records, both of which live up to the righteous soul legacy of that famous label! "I Don't Want To Take A Chance" has Willie singing with a raspy edge that's deep soul – but next to production that has some slight uptown touches – classing up the tune in this really great way, and creating a fantastic interplay between the lead and the instrumentation! "I Ain't Gonna Cheat" has more great vocals – amidst an upbeat groove that's almost Northern Soul as it soars along! 7-inch, Vinyl record

VariousEccentric Soul – The Dynamic Label ... CD
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
That's a sweet image on the cover – and the grooves inside are equally dynamic too – a really wonderful collection that's easily one of the most compelling in Numero's Eccentric Soul series! The work here all hails from the tiny San Antonio scene of the late 60s – but much of the music has a sound that's way different than you might expect from Texas soul – often with great harmonies that recall the best of the east coast groups of the time, and occasionally with a few brown-eyed touches that echo the style of East LA! There's a wonderfully heartbreaking feel to many of these tracks – and the set's heavy focus on mellower numbers is totally great – and gives the whole thing a wonderful late nite sort of vibe that's usually quite hard to find in compilations like this. As usual, Numero's done a great job with the notes and history of the label – but the music alone is more than enough – a heady brew of cuts that include "Little Girl Blue" and "Try Loving Me" by The Webs, "I Gotta Know" by Tonettes, "Give Your Love To Me" and "Ain't No Big Thing" by Little Jr Jesse & The Tear Drops, "Cry & Wonder Why" by Doc & Sal, "Must Be Alright" and "Hey It's Love" by The Commands, "She's Gotta Have Soul" by Bobby Blackmon & The Soul Express, and "I Can't Take No More" by Willie Cooper & The Webs. Numero, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99 29.98
Great work from a label that was way out in the Cleveland scene of the 60s – but which bristles with some of the best energy of Detroit and Chicago at the time! The tiny imprint never cracked the big time, but not for lack of quality – as the cuts here have a sharp blend of deep soul vocals and tight arrangements – of the sort that we've always loved in the best smaller Chicago indies of the late 60s – particularly the kind of labels that were operating in the shadows of Chess and Brunswick. A core group of artists recorded most of this music – and make for a very unified feel throughout – especially given that even some of the numbers with solo singers still really maintain a group soul sort of vibe. And the overall quality of the package takes us back to the earliest days of projects like this from the Numero Group – right down to the very detailed story of the label's unique place in 60s soul music. Titles include "There's No You" by The Occasions, "Demanding Man" and "Two Can Make It" by The Sensations, "She Didn't Know" by Sammy Jones, "Ain't That A Heartache" and "Baby Don't Go" by Norman Scott, "You're Not Loving A Beginner" by Jesse Fisher, "How long Will It Last" by The Soul Notes, "Why" by The Springers, and "Party At Lester's" by Lou Ragland & His Bandmasters. 2CD set – with 40 tracks and a great booklet! ✨✧ VariousNo Jive – Authentic Southern Country Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Rootsy blues from the great Excello Records – most of it recorded not too far from the Tennessee city in which the label made its home! The southern scene in the 50s was going through plenty of changes – partly because of all the migration northwards that started during the wartime years, partly because of the way that radio and growing indie labels were helping criss-cross sounds and scenes through their musical efforts – with a huge run of changes that were taking place in the urban scene. Even out in the sticks, stronger use of the electric guitar really transformed rural blues – even in spare recording settings that might have mirrored blues records of the 20s and 30s – and the use of new ideas, new inflections, and new ways of putting over a tune are perfectly captured here in a batch of rare tracks done by the Excello label. Most of the cuts are super-rare singles, issued here with excellent sound – and there's a few other numbers on the set that are issued here for the first time ever – with great sound and excellent notes. Titles include "I'm Bad" by Good Rockin Bob, "No Jive" by Little Al, "Honey Babe" by Arthur Gunter, "The Natural Facts" by Leroy Campbell, "Wasted Time" by Shy Guy Douglas, "Dirty Britches" by The Leap Frogs, "Welcome Home Baby" by Slim Hunt, and "Quit My Drinkin" by Robert Garrett. An incredible record from Mississippi Fred McDowell – a set that was issued on a big label, but which has a wonderfully rootsy feel throughout – in a way that almost out-does any work from the indie blues labels of the time! The package was put together by Tommy Couch as an early Malaco production – but it's even more stripped-down than later blues work from those studios – as it features mostly just Fred on vocals and guitar, introducing himself and his music – then working through these incredible inflections on electric guitar, which are as far from the rockish sound of all the crossover blues that McDowell promises he won't provide in the title! Really timeless stuff, brilliantly recorded – with cuts that include "Red Cross Store", "61 Highway", "Jesus Is On The Mainline", "Kokomo Me Baby", and "Good Morning Little School Girl". CD

One of the tightest 70s albums from Buddy Rich – a record that's got some smooth and soulful touches, and a groove that's quite different than most of his other work! A beautiful album by one of our favorite jazz singers! Lorez Alexandria is in a perfect setting here – singing with subtly sophisticated backings that really let her take charge, and direct the songs tightly with her incredibly soulful vocals! Instrumentation is mostly in a small combo mode – with the Wynton Kelly trio at the core, augmented by a bit of guitar from Ray Crawford, and some alto sax from Paul Horn – and although the album's got an easygoing feel, it also keenly shows the tightness that's always made Lorez so great! Styles are a blend of soul and jazz, plus just a hint of bossa, heard beautifully on the album's rendition of "O Barquinho". Warner, 1974. Very Good+ ... $19.99 24.99
The kind of overlooked, understated gem that should have put Badfinger at the top of the charts in the mid 70s – a record of impeccable songwriting, really great production, and a refinement of an earlier musical ideal that really points the way forward – all while avoiding most of the pitfalls of some of the group's UK contemporaries! There's a quality here that almost reminds us of the more straightforward elements of Wings, but with a rootsy vibe too – almost a bit like Little Feat, but definitely British in terms of the way the vocals come across. One of the few early albums as a leader cut by trumpeter Benny Bailey – a tremendous talent, finally getting his due! Bailey is one of the great unsung talents of jazz, and he's always made top-shelf work – from his early days with Quincy Jones, to his later years as an American expatriot, recording for European labels like Ego and MPS. This rare early session is one of the few recorded for the super-hip Candid label – and it features Bailey's trumpet at the head of a tight combo that includes Phil Woods on alto sax and bass clarinet, Julius Watkins on French Horn, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and rhythm from Buddy Catlett on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Despite the "big brass" title, there's no horn section here – and instead, most of the numbers have that sharp-edged modern sound we associate with Candid – with Watkins horn being the only other brass instrument, alongside the lighter lines of Woods and Spann. Monitor, Mid 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
An amazing record – one we'd easily rank right up there with some of our favorite 60s albums from Brazil – including work by Baden Powell or Elis Regina! This session has echoes of the best of both of those artists, but also predates their key moments too – a groundbreaking record that combines older folkloric themes and groovier rhythms of the post-bossa generation – all with an echoey brilliance that reminds us a lot of Powell's classic Afro Sambas record, but sung with the fierce emotion we've always loved in Elis. We've never seen another record from Zelia Barbosa, but this one moment of genius is more than enough to make us love her – a bold, righteous album that no doubt languished in the 60s in the world/folk underground of the Monitor label, but which would have exploded in Brazil had it been issued on Philips or Forma! Just about every cut's a winner, and titles include "Pedro Pedreiro", "Cheganca", "Nega Dina", "Zelao", "Cancao Da Terra", "Sina De Caboclo", "Feio Nao E Bonita", and "Opiniao". CD

RCA/Morello (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A trio of albums that pair RCA country star Bobby Bare with some of the label's female singers – all brought together with bonus tracks too! Tunes For Two is one of the magical pairings of Bobby Bare and Skeeter Davis – both rising stars in the RCA country lineup of the 60s – each with their own sort of special sound! Skeeter's got a heartbreaking mode that's kind of post-Patsy Cline – perfect for the slower, blue-tinged tracks on the set – and a nice contrast with the more natural approach of Bobby – who's always got his emotions handy, but also often with a wry eye that lets him put things in perspective. The pair duet directly on most numbers – instead of singing back and forth – and titles include "In The Misty Moonlight", "Dear John Letter", "Too Used To Being With You", "True Love", "Let It Be Me", and "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds". Game Of Triangles is a compelling take on the country duo mode of the 60s – an album that features some tracks that have all three singers working together – beautiful "love triangle" numbers – then more tracks that feature each singer on their own! The triangle numbers are especially compelling – and include "One Among The Three Of Us", "Bye Bye Love", "Three Mixed Up Hearts", "Which One Is To Blame", and "The Game Of Triangles" – a really fresh version of country heartbreak modes. Other cuts are nice, too – and include Bobby Bare singing "Homesick" and "Guess I'll Move On Down The Line", Liz Anderson singing "The Wife Of The Party" and "Fairytale", and Norma Jean singing "Pursuing Happiness" and "Don't Let That Doorknob Hit You". Last up is Your Husband My Wife – a set that has the duo of Bare and Davis really maturing nicely – hitting modes that are a lot more country than some of Skeeter's early pop material, with beautiful back/forth vocals that open up the well-penned tunes of heartbreak and the struggles of love to survive. Titles include "Before The Sunrise", "Let's Make Love Not War", "There Never Was A Time", "A Truer Love You'll Never Find", and the great "Your Husband My Wife". William Bell was one of the first great soul singers to record for the legendary Stax Records in Memphis – an artist who really helped set the tone for deep soul singles to come from the likes of Otis Redding and Johnnie Taylor – and one whose early work is still some of the best he ever gave us! This well-done package brings together all of Bell's first 14 singles for the label, both a-sides and b-sides – standing together as a testament to all the greatness the singer brought to the fray right from the start – as Stax not only found a way to record him so much differently than he would have been handled in other spots, but also matured along with Bell to keep on creating fresh magic as the 60s moved on!
