Lester YoungGreat Lester Young – Vol 2 ... LP
Aladdin/Imperial, Late 40s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Great early work from Lester Young – an Imperial Records collection of early material from the 78rpm days of Aladdin Records! The work is a great bridge between swing and pop – and Lester Young's tone is superb throughout – on titles that include "One O'Clock Jump", "Easy Does It", "East Of The Sun", "No Eyes Blues", "The Sheik Of Araby", "Confessin' That I Love You", "Something To Remember You By", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "Jumpin' At Mesners", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "Lover Come Back To Me" and "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid". ✨✧ Gary Burton & Chick CoreaDuet ... LP
ECM, 1979. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius work from the team of Chick Corea on piano and Gary Burton on vibes – both players who were already making a lot of magic in the 70s, but who really seem to explode in the company of each other! Burton's tones are wonderfully bold and firm – these cascading colors that merge perfectly with Corea's piano lines – which themselves have a beautifully understated feel that's quite different than his fusion material – but which seems to pack an even more powerful punch! The album features no other instrumentation at all – yet the range of feeling and expression is much more powerful than most full group performances – on a sublime set of tracks that include "Duet Suite", "Never", "La Fiesta", "Radio", "Song To Gayle", and selections from Corea's "Children's Songs". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Crabby AppletonCrabby Appleton ... LP
Elektra, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The debut album from Crabby Appleton – and a set that's got a surprising sort of late psych vibe at times – almost as if the group were hanging on to some of the modes that first got them started, while also stretching out with some of the new sophistication that the 70s had to offer! That psych touch is maybe no surprise, though, given that the group's singer Michael Fennelly was in The Millennium – and works here with some heavier rockers who were in Stonehenge – all in a surprising mix of modes that really keeps things interesting throughout! Titles include the big single "Go Back", plus "Peace By Peace", "To All My Friends", "Some Madness", "Hunger For Love", "Last Night In Your Sleep Fred", "Some Madness", and "The Other Side". ✨✧ Clifford BrownMemorial Album (Blue Note) ... LP
Blue Note, 1953. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Clifford Brown only recorded a handful of sides for Blue Note – but all of the best ones are included in this excellent album – a full length set that culls together Brown's material from the 10" years, issued as a memorial to his early death in 1956! Side one features Brown with the modernist Gigi Gryce on flute and alto sax – plus Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – a lineup that has a strong sense of soul, balanced with a dose of modernism – on titles that include the classic "Hymn to the Orient" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Easy Living", "Cherokee", "Wail Bait", and "Minor Mood". Side two features an equally sharp group – with Lou Donaldson on some excellent alto, and the great Elmo Hope on piano – on titles that include "Brownie Speaks", "De Dah", "Cookin", "You Go To My Head", and "Carving The Rock". ✨✧ Pony PoindexterNew Orleans Fire – Live 1969 (aka Happy Life Of Pony) ... LP
MPS/Made In Germany (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the few albums as a leader from the great Pony Poindexter – a reedman who mostly spent time in the Basie Band of the late 50s, and got some key nods from Lambert Hendricks & Ross – then recorded one album for Epic, a few for Prestige, and headed overseas for a rare few dates like this! Pony blows alto in a nice open-ended setting – almost spiritual at times, but held a few notches back – yet definitely stretching out way past his roots, as with other players of his generation on the American scene! Poindexter blows in a very cool modern quartet – with the young Jan Hammer on organ and piano, plus Jiri Mraz on bass, and Michael Dennert on drums – on titles that include "The Theme", "It Ain't Nobody's Business", "Tit Bit", "Wade In The Water", and "Moody's Mood For Love". A really great set – with a feel that's better than most other work from the time by the players! JJ and Nat team up for a Japanese concert – with help from Billy Childs on keyboards, Tony Dumas on bass, and Kevin Johnson on drums. Childs is the real star here, as he plays electric piano on a number of tracks – and gives the album a cool funky sound that we really didn't expect. 11 tracks in all, including "Horace", "Splashes", "Work Song", "Walkin", "It Happens", "Splashes", "Jevin", "Melodee", "Hummin", "Why Not", and "Cyclops". Bev KellyBev Kelly In Person ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used ... $9.99
We're always big fans of Bev Kelly's work, but this album is way hipper than the usual vocal album of its type from the time – thanks to a sweet little lineup that features Pony Poindexter on alto sax and Flip Nunez on piano! The presence of Poindexter's horn is always a treat, on the handful of smaller group sides he cut from this time – and Nunez's piano lines have an inherently rhythmic groove that comes out even on the mellower numbers – which often are somewhat spacious, but stepping along with a gentle groove underneath Kelly's fantastic vocals. Part of the credit for this groove goes to Johnny Allen, whose work on bass is great – and the group's completed by the drums of Tony Johnson, who's a bit more down in the mix. Titles include "Long Ago & Far Away", "My Foolish Heart", "Night & Day", "Just Friends", "Love Letters", "This Is Always", and "My Funny Valentine". CD

Lambert, Hendricks & RossHottest New Group In Jazz – The Complete Columbia Recordings ... CD
Columbia, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $5.99
How can we even begin to describe the genius of Lambert Hendricks and Ross? The group was a jazz vocal supergroup that merged three talents that had already made a big name in the bebop vocalese field – Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and the lovely Annie Ross – and the project was an attempt to completely work the emerging vocalese style onto a full-blown jazz group. Previously, the singers had only sung vocal solos for one instrument – but with a trio of players, they were suddenly able to take over the solos of all the frontline instruments in a group, such as the piano, trumpet, and tenor solos in their incredible version of "Home Cookin". That track alone is a perfect summation of the group's genius – as it offers a true vocal interplay, with words in place of notes and changes, and opens the already great soul jazz classic into a whole new level of meaning and wonder. It also helps that that track, like most of the ones on this CD, features excellent rhythm backing by Gildo Mahones, Ike Isaacs, and Walt Bolden, plus the occasional alto solo by Pony Poindexter. Their Columbia work's always been their best – and this CD brings together all 3 LPs (Hottest Group In Jazz, Sing Ellington, and the amazing High Flying), plus 7 previously unissued tracks! There's a whopping 39 cuts in all – and the set's one of the best jazz vocal CDs you could ever buy! CD

Shelly ManneLil' Abner ... LP
Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint- ... $19.99 29.99
Shelly picks up on a very successful format for his trio of the late 50s – begun with the My Fair Lady album, and followed through with this one – a batch of jazz-based readings of tracks from the hit Broadway musical based on the comic strip Lil Abner. Apart from that bit of history, and the goofy cover, which has Manne dressed as Abner, the overall feel is straight trio work in Shelly's most popular mode of the time – with Andre Previn on the ivories and Leroy Vinnegar on bass. Titles include "Matrimonial Stomp", "Jubilation T Cornpone", "Oh Happy Day", "Namely You", "Past My Prime", and "Progress Is The Root Of All Evil". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used ... $9.99
One of the gems that Lucky Thompson cut on his return to the US in the mid 60s – and one of the few albums from that time that got wide release! The album's a laidback quartet session that has Lucky blowing both tenor and his new love, soprano sax, with a group that includes Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Thompson's playing is a masterpiece in understatement – with these sly lines, especially on soprano sax, that really set things off beautifully – grabbing you by surprise and holding you rapt, in ways that remind us a bit of Pony Poindexter during the same time. Titles include "Mumba Neua", "Invitation", "Prey Loot", "Fly With The Wind", and "Mid Nite Oil". CD

Not as full on and bombastic as some of Philly Joe Jones heavy thunder recordings from the late 50s – but two nice albums recorded during one set of sessions for Galaxy Records at the end of the 70s! The quality of the material here is high – as Jones is working here with sidemen that include Slide Hampton on trombone, Harold Land on tenor, and Blue Mitchell on trumpet – grooving easily and soulfully through a set of originals, bop standards, and a few mellower chestnuts thrown in to round out the set. Titles include "I Waited for You", "Our Delight", "Bird", "Two Bass Hit", and "Hi Fly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – Twinight's Lunar Rotation ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The best look at Chicago's legendary Twinight label that we've ever seen – a massive 2CD set that goes way past the obvious hits, and really digs into the heart and soul of this unique little record company! Twinight is best known as the home of Syl Johnson during his legendary run of funky soul singles at the end of the 60s – but the company was also home to a lot of other great talent during the same stretch – harmony vocal groups, sweet soul singers, funky combos, and more – all of which you'll hear in this incredible little set! (And in fact, the set does such a great job of presenting the other artists on Twinight, that it leaves out Syl Johnson entirely – so the package is a 100% non-Syl set – which is ok with us, because you can always get Johnson's work on other reissues.) The Numero Group have really outdone themselves this time around – using their careful ear to pull out the best lost bits from Twinight, remastered here with wonderful sound – and a brilliant 32 page booklet that tells the story of the label, and also includes loads of vintage photos. The set's a must-have for any fan of quality funk or soul – and the package includes a whopping 40 titles that include "Goin Man Huntin" by Jo Ann Garrett, "I've Made Up My Mind" by Josephine Taylor, "A New Day" by The Notations, "Nevermore" by Renaldo Domino, "Yesterday's Mistakes" by Jimmy Jones, "I'll Always Love You" by Velma Perkins, "Life Walked Out" by Mist, "Put Out The Fire by Mystiques, "You & Me Baby" by Kaldirons, "Rosemarie" by Dynamic Tints, "Remind Me" by Schiller Street Gang, "Is It Meant To Be" by Krystal Generation, "Pardon My Innocent Heart" by Nate Evans, "Package Of Love (part 1)" by Dynamic Tints, "The Devastator" by Stormy, "Mama" by Annette Poindexter, "Pass It On (part 1)" by Pipes Of Peace, "My Sunshine Girl" by Radiants, "Let Me Come Within" by Renaldo Domino, "Soul Strokes" by Sidney Pinchback, and "Can You Find Me Love" by Harrison & The Majestic Kind. Modern Harmonic, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic array of really cool songs – all written and recorded by Tom Dawes of The Cyrkle – as part of a big career as a jingle writer after his group cut a famous theme song for 7 Up! The music here is great – work from a time when jingles for TV and radio ads were like mini songs in and of themselves – often as catchy as anything on the charts, if not more so – so that the tunes you'd hear for a few short seconds would stick in your head all day long! If you dig sunshine pop, there's plenty to love here – and remember that the great Roger Nichols also gave the world a wonderful tune that was originally designed as a jingle. Some of the tracks here never made it to the TV screen, others are classics – and the set includes songs written for Windex, GI Joe, Alka Seltzer, Calgon, Stridex, Murine, Hartford Insurance, Thom McCann, Life Savers, Timex, Ford, and many others. ✨✧ Jutta HippHipp Is Cool – The Life & Art Of Jutta Hipp (6CD/DVD/book set) ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1950s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible tribute to German pianist Jutta Hipp – one of the few female players in the postwar European jazz scene, and one of the few who managed to make a splash on this side of the Atlantic too! Jutta's best known to American audiences for a handful of records she cut for Blue Note – and this set takes those records, and moves way way past them – to including a huge range of material that really opens up our understanding of Hipp's music in her all-too-short career! The CDs feature early German recordings – in a number of sessions with small groups that include a quintet with Emil Mangelsdorff on alto and Joki Freeund on tenor, a number of performances in the New Jazz Stars group of tenorist Hans Koller, work in a quintet with Attila Zoller on guitar, another sextet with Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and a group co-led with baritone saxoponist Lars Gullin. The set then moves onto American trio recordings from 1956 – including a few tracks from the Newport Jazz Festival – plus a key session with tenorist Zoot Sims – and the package is concluded by very early recordings, some with Hans Koller, and some from the mid 40s with the Lime City Swing Club! The set also features performances on DVD with Hans Koller – and the whole thing comes with a massive 208 page coffee table book – filled not only with German and English notes and biography, plus a recording index, hundreds of photos, record sleeves, labels, and even some of Jutta's own artwork too! A huge amount of music – and a very beautiful package too! CD

✨✧ Dave Lambert/John HendricksSing Along & Swing Along With Dave Lambert/Evolution Of The Blues Song ... CD
United Artists/El (UK), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the only full album ever recorded as a solo act by Dave Lambert, the vocalist that we know and love from the team of Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – but who's also a heck of a great singer on his own! As you may know from the group, Dave's got a slightly quirky vocal approach that warbles with the honesty of a good horn solo – a style that we might rank next to Bob Dorough's in its appeal, except for the fact that Dave, like his fellow members in the trio, has a much greater jazz-based quality – and on some of the tunes here, he improvises wonderfully and inflects the tunes in really unique ways. Players on the album aren't credited, but it sounds like it's probably Gildo Mahones on piano backing Dave up – and titles include 2 great wordless numbers titled "Blues" and "Short Blues Around The Broadway Bridge" – plus the tunes "Over The Weekend", "Autumn Nocturne", "All Alone", "Yesterdays", and "We Could Make Such Beautiful Music". Evolution Of The Blues, an early concept album from the great Jon Hendricks – one that tells the story of blues through jazz – all put together as a flowing story in music! Jon speaks and sings the whole tale – but also gets some help on vocals from Big Miller, Hanna Dean, and Jimmy Witherspoon – as well as great musical backing from the core Ike Isaac Trio, with solos by Pony Poindexter and Ben Webster! The music is mostly rooted in blues, but with a hipper jazz sensibility – almost in the way that Oscar Brown Jr and others were going back to the roots, but updating them for the 60s. Titles include "WPA Blues", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "New Orleans", "If I Had My Share", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love". CD

✨✧ Wynton MarsalisWynton Marsalis ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The classic debut of a young Wynton Marsalis – cut after a stretch when Wynton was working with Art Blakey, and had really sharpened his chops! The record's a wonderful return to straight jazz tradition for Columbia – but it also has some modern moments too – proof that the younger generation of 80s jazz players still had plenty of fresh sounds to bring to the table. Half of the record has Marsalis paired with the VSOP rhythm section – in a way that provides a nice link with the more modern edges of Columbia jazz a decade before. Wynton's sometimes a bit serious in his approach, but also opens up with freer Blakey-inspired moments too – and other players here include Herbie Hancock and Kenny Kirkland on piano, Jeff Watts and Tony Williams on drums, Clarence Seay and Ron Carter on bass, and Branford Marsalis on sax. Titles include "Twilight", "RJ", "Hesitation", "I'll Be There When The Time Comes", and "Father Time". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dinah WashingtonDinah Washington ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An album issued after the too-early passing of Dinah Washington – and a set that makes us realize just how great she still was at the end! Washington started in a bluesier mode, but over the course of the 50s – and especially during her early 60s years at Roulette – she was really turning into something else entirely – an artist with a voice like nobody else, able to take on jazz and blues equally, with a sound that seemed poised to blossom into something new and even more sophisticated in years to come! That approach stands strong on all the tracks here – material brought together by the label after Dinah's passing, but hardly a batch of filler at all – given the wonderful strength of the set. Pacific Jazz/Lonehill (Spain), 1958/1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
An obscure set of tracks – but some really wonderful material from the catalog of Pacific Jazz Records! The CD's title clearly showcases the presence of Wes Montgomery on the sides – but Wes was actually more of a sideman on these tracks, and the real credit for the greatness goes to the leaders! The first 10 tracks on the CD are from the album Good Git Together by Jon Hendricks – a rare early non-LHR session by the jazz vocalist – one cut in a very different style than his more famous group vocalese work. Hendricks is laidback, open, and very soulful – working with Wes, Buddy, and Monk Montgomery – as well as Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Pony Poindexter, and Gildo Mahones – all coming together in a "git together" session that features some of Hendricks' best vocals on record! The session features great readings of Hendricks originals that include "Minor Catastrophe", "I'll Die Happy", and "I'm Gonna Shout" – as well as Gigi Gryce's "Music In The Air" and "Social Call", plus a great take on Randy Weston's "Pretty Strange" and Gildo Mahones' "The Shouter". Next up on the set are 8 more tracks from a jazz version of Kismet – recorded by The Mastersounds group which featured Buddy Montgomery on vibes and Monk Montgomery on bass – joined here by Wes on guitar! The source of the tunes is a musical, but the presentation is all jazz – and the group craft some real magic in their exotic style, with tracks that include "Fate", "Olive Tree", "Not Since Nineveh", and "Gesticulate & Rhymes Have I". Pony Poindexter with Booker ErvinGumbo! (plus unissued bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige, 1963. Used ... $11.99
A stone classic from New Orleans reedman Pony Poindexter – a set that's steeped in tradition, but also has a groovy feel too – and a date that features Pony on both alto and soprano sax! The latter instrument is especially nice, played with echoes of earlier Crescent City modes, but updated strongly with more of a modal 60s energy – almost a Coltrane-like inspiration, but in very different ways than Trane might offer up. Other players on the date are great too – and include Booker Ervin's tenor at is soulful 60s best, plus Gildo Mahones on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Jimmy Smith on drums – all working with some very unusual rhythms that really make the set stand out from other Prestige dates of the time! Titles include "Happy Strut", "Gumbo Filet", "Front O Town", "Back O Town", "French Market", and "Creole Girl". But almost even better, the set also features 8 more bonus tracks – all previously unissued! Three are from the sessions for Gumbo – but the rest are from an unusual 1963 date that features the tenor of Booker Ervin with the organ of Larry Young and drums of Jerry Thomas – a really cool small combo group in the vein of Young's early Prestige work. Additional titles include "Wade In The Water", "Autumn Leaves", "Old Folks", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Absotively Posalutely", and "Blue & Sentimental". CD

This set's recorded back in the US, in California at the end of the 70s – and it's got Pony blowing easy-going solos on alto with a quartet that includes Neal Kirkwood on piano, Art Washington on bass, and Richie Goldberg on drums. The album's pretty laidback, and although the tracks lack the nice groove of some of Pony's best European material, his tone on the alto still has that raspy edge that always makes him one of our favorite players on the instrument. Titles include "Candy Pants", "Spanish Fly", "Song For D", and "Pretty Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jon HendricksEvolution Of The Blues Song ... LP
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An early concept album from the great Jon Hendricks – one that tells the story of blues through jazz – all put together as a flowing story in music! Titles include "WPA Blues", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "New Orleans", "I Had My Share", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has partial seam splits, light surface wear, hype sticker, spot of sticker remnant.)
