NimbusChildren Of The Earth ... LP
Nimbus/Providenciales (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A really cool little set from a small Michigan group – one who serve up soul with a bit of a fusion twist – all in a sound that's quite unique! At some level, Nimbus remind us of the groups bubbling under on the Austin scene of the mid 70s – working without any need for standard labels, and grooving with some of the best freedoms of the earlier part of the decade – tying together jazzy riffs and soulful vocals with a compressed sort of production – but never in the slicker styles of the big labels at the time. There's a really honest, earnest feel to the music – still quite captivating all these many years later, with instrumentation that includes keyboards, saxes, bass, and percussion. Titles include "Nezarai", "The Eyes Of Love", "Children Of The Earth", "Heaven & Love", "Hold Me Close", "Open Your Eyes", and "Anna Smile". LP, Vinyl record album

Forty Seven Times Its Own WeightCumulo Nimbus ... CD
Fable/Jazzman (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $14.99
Funky and free-thinking fusion from the Texas scene of the mid 70s – a great indie album by a group who travelled in the same territory as the soul combo Starcrost! Although American, the work here has some great qualities that remind us of some of the best European fusion from the same time – a sense of soaring, stretching energy – and one that never resorts to too much jamming to carry across its message, and which juxtaposes heavier rhythms with some gentler tunes that really allow the horn parts some wonderful moments! Instrumentation include soprano sax, tenor, trumpet, electric and acoustic piano, and a fair bit of percussion too – all recorded with a great sense of warmth, almost in the mode of some of the best Fantasy Records 70s sessions! Titles include "Jig", "Halyards", "Cumulo Nimbus", "47 Tears", "March Of The Goober Woobers", and "Weedhopper" CD

Creative Arts EnsembleOne Step Out ... LP
Nimbus/Outernational (UK), 1981. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $34.99
A great bit of work from the hip LA scene that centered around the Nimbus label at the end of the 70s – a collective who work together here with the same spiritual jazz modes you'd find on labels like Tribe or Strata East! The group features some bigger names from the scene, including some solo Nimbus acts – plus some other overlooked players – a lineup that includes Henry Franklin on bass, George Bohannon on trombone, Wilbert Hemsley on tenor, Dadesi Komolafe on flute, Jeff Clayton on baritone, and Gary Bias on alto and soprano sax. The album's also got some beautiful vocals from BJ Crowley – who co-leads the group, and sings out with a proud righteousness that recalls some of Dee Dee Bridgewater or Jean Carn's early early soul jazz recordings. The tracks are all long and spiraling numbers – never really "out", but in a free searching mode that's a perfect platform for the piano work of the other co-leader, Kaeef Ruzadun. Titles include "One Step Out", "Flashback Of Time", "All Praises Due", and "Stars In Lightyear Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Dadisi KomolafeHassan's Walk (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
A soul jazz treasure from the LA scene of the early 80s – a fantastic record that we'd rank with the best Strata East sides of the time! The group's led by alto saxophonist Dadisi Komolafe, and features vibes by Ricky Kelly, piano by Eric Tillman, bass by Roberto Miranda, and drums by Sunship Theus – all working together in a style that's infused with soulful, post-Coltrane exploratory energy, never going too far outside, and always staying true to the rhythmic pulse at its core. Kelly's vibes are really great – sparkling underneath solos by Komolafe that remind us a lot of Gary Bartz's earliest work – and titles include "Calvary", "Speak No Evil", and "Hassan's Walk". Adele SebastianDesert Fairy Princess (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
One of our favorite records ever on the legendary Nimbus label – a special home to spiritual jazz on the west coast at the end of the 70s – and crucial for giving us some really unique talents like this! Adele Sebastian may have only ever cut this one album as a leader, but she's a hell of a flute player with a very deep, spiritual vibe – these sublime lines that soar and stretch out over modal rhythms – played by a totally hip group that includes Rickey Kelley on vibes, Roberto Miranda on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums and a bit of gembreh – a string instrument that brings a nicely exotic vibe to the record. The group's rounded out by Bobby West on piano and Daoude Woods on percussion – and the songs have this open flow that's wonderful – never too far out, but always searching – as the group soar through a version of McCoy Tyner's "Man From Tanganyika", plus the tracks "Desert Fairy Princess", "Belize", "Prayer For The People", and "Day Dreamer". ✨✧ Jesse Sharps Quintet/Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraSharps & Flats ... LP
Nimbus/Outernational, 1979/1985. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Soaring spiritual soul jazz from the LA scene – a double-length set that features a beautiful performance by the Jesse Sharps Quintet, plus a longer extended track from Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra! We'll be honest in saying that we'd never heard of Sharps before this album – but he's a heck of a great saxophonist, with a sound that recalls the glory days of the Strata East scene, and the beautiful post-Coltrane Muse sessions by Earl & Carl Grubbs. His group for the session features some excellent work by the great Nate Morgan on piano – driving away in long, rhythmic passages that are very much in the mode of Morgan's own Nimbus recordings – and carried through with an equal amount of soul. Horace Tapscott joins the group on two numbers as well – before stepping over to lead his expanded Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra on the record's extra cut – a composition by Sharps that's entitled "McKowsky's First Fifth" – played by a great Nimbus-esque group that includes Adele Sebastian on flute, Sabia Mateen on tenor, Billie Harris on soprano, and Horace Tapscott on piano. Other titles on the album include "The Goat & The Ramjam", "As A Child", "Mike's Tune", "Macrame", and "Carnival" – and the whole set of tracks is easily one of the greatest recordings on the legendary Nimbus label! ✨✧ Horace Tapscott/Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraFlight 17 (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Nimbus/Outernational (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums ever from pianist Horace Tapscott – a double-length set that has him working with a large lineup of underground musicians from the 70s Los Angeles scene – all united in spirit and power as the Pan-African Peoples Arkestra! Tapscott's piano directs the group strongly – as an extension of the vision that he brought to the late 60s Sonny's Dream album by Sonny Criss – but the music is freer, more spiritual, and often graced with bursts of ensemble energy, balanced by some really tremendous solos from other musicians too! The lineup includes some other key members of the Nimbus Records collective – including Jesse Sharps on saxes and flute, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, and Roberto Miranda on bass – and other players include James Andrews and Sabia Matteen on tenor, Archie Johnson and Lester Robertson on trombone, Billy Harris on soprano, Herbert Callies on alto clarinet, and Michael Session on alto. Titles include "Flight 17", "Breeze", "Horacio", "Clarice", and "Maui". This 2LP version features bonus material too – a great "Coltrane Medley", plus "Village Dance Revisited". Nimbus/Outernational (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Large-group genius from the legendary Horace Tapscott – one of the few recordings of his groundbreaking Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra! The music here is totally righteous right from the start – even more searching and soaring than Tapscott's trio or solo work – thanks to help from some of the hippest, most spiritual players on the LA scene of the late 70s – a lineup you'll recognize from other Nimbus Records sessions, all working together beautifully to realize the unique vision of Horace! Tracks are long, and feature Tapscott on piano, Jesse Sharps on saxes, Adele Sebastian on flute and vocals, Herbert Callies on alto, James Andrews on tenor, Lester Robertson on trombone, Kafi Larry Roberts on soprano, and Linda Hill on additional piano – all working together perfectly as a unified ensemble. There's a strong Strata East vibe to the whole record – and titles include "The Call", "Nakatini Suite", "Quagmire Manor At Five AM", and "Peyote Song III". LP, Vinyl record album

Nimbus/Soul Jazz (UK), 1979. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An excellent double-length set from Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – an extremely righteous ensemble that was one of the hippest things going on the LA jazz scene of the 70s! The vibe is free and spiritual, but it also has a wonderful groove pulsating underneath many of the tracks – that heir to the Impulse Records style that Tapscott and other Nimbus Records artists carried on well into the early 80s. The group here features some of Tapscott's Nimbus labelmates – including Sabir Matteen and Billy Harris on tenor saxes, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, Roberto Miranda on bass, and Jesse Sharps on soprano sax – and in a way, the album's almost a live summation of all the mighty talents brewing on the Nimbus label at the time! Tracks are all quite long, and titles include a great version of Sebastian's "Desert Fairy Princess", plus "Macrame", "Future Sally's Time", "Noissessprahs", "Village Dance", "LTT", and "Lift Every Voice". King (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $18.99
A sweet early set from Japanese pianist Aki Takase – a player who would go onto have a huge international reputation – but working here in a nicely homegrown groove overall! The album's got a warm feel right from the start – not mellow or commercial, but soulfully lyrical, in a style that Takase does very well – playing both acoustic piano and keyboards, sometimes overdubbed at the same time – in a trio with Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and cello, and Takuji Kusumoto on drums and percussion. Titles include "Carnival", "Birdland", "Cumulo Nimbus", "Season Off", and "Idle Talking". CD

✨✧ Bobby Bradford/Hafez ModirzadehLive At Blue Whale ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The legendary Bobby Bradford is alive and well – and sounding especially amazing here in the company of saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh – who brings some global elements to the music that we never would have heard from Bobby back in the 70s! The performance is a live one, and has all four group members really shining in the company of each other – including bassist Roberto Miguel Miranda, who you may remember for his classic material on Nimbus Records on the LA scene at the end of the 70s! Turns out, Miranda's a live and well here – and adds a fantastic soulful current to the proceedings – next to the drums of Vijay Anderson, the cornet of Bradford, and Modirzadeh's very evocative soprano sax – which is sometimes augmented by work on karna and khaen. Titles include "Crooked Blues", "One Bar Lowe", "Free The Idea", "Raphael", and "Almost Not Crazy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ralph ThomasEastern Standard Time ... LP
Zebra/BBE (UK), 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
No standards here, as the tracks are all originals – written by reedman Ralph Thomas and the rest of his group – to create the sort of unique little record that really keeps us digging for rare jazz over the years! Thomas grew up in Chicago, where he soaked up the soulful sounds of both the west side and the AACM – but the set was recorded after he'd moved to Los Angeles, at the suggestion of some of his contemporaries – where he was able to bring together some equally inventive players, while also working as part of the same hip scene that included Horace Tapscott and Nate Morgan! Some of the rhythms here recall some of Morgan's music on the Nimbus label, but there's maybe a bit more of a soul current too – with Thomas on alto, tenor, soprano, and flute – amidst guitar, keyboards, drums, flute, and some especially nice percussion – all to craft rhythms that move between spiritual, modal, and more conventionally soulful styles – a vibe that's maybe a bit like some of the 70s Detroit work on the Strata label. Titles include "Spellbound", "Cafe Phillipp", "Big Spliff", "Venice", "EST", "Deloreso", and "Muscavado". LP, Vinyl record album

Mosaic/Revelation, 1969/1971/1972/1979. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing collection of music – some of the hippest jazz to ever come out of the west coast scene, and a legendary pairing of trumpeter Bobby Bradford and saxophonist John Carter! Both players have really gone onto leave their mark in later years – but honestly, they almost reached the peak of their powers with these incredible early recordings – beautifully bracing modern jazz, of a sort that somewhat follows an Ornette Coleman lineage, but which also opens up into the new spirituality that was hitting the LA scene in the post-Coltrane years – almost a bridge between the Coleman/Dolphy generation, and the later Nimbus scene that would rise in the west! The music here is stark, simple, and quite organic – yet has an energy that's all its own – an amazing progression of rhythms and horn sounds, wrapped together beautifully through a killer set of original compositions. Carter plays alto, tenor, clarinet, and flute; Bradford is on trumpet, and rhythm players include Nate Morgan and Bill Henderson on piano, Henry Franklin and Louis Spears on bass, and Bruz Freeman and Leon Ndugu Chancler on drums. The set brings together material originally issued on the Seeking and Secrets albums for the Revelation label – but then also features lots more previously unreleased tracks – making the set more than 50% new material! Most titles are of the 1969/Early 70s vintage of the Revelation albums – but the set also features some beautiful 1979 duets between Carter and Bradford, with no other instrumentation at all. 22 tracks in all – and an instant treasure! The Groove Diggers grabbed some great 70s mellow cuts this time around – a sweet blend of soul and AOR material, all from the rare side of the spectrum – often with a jazzy richness that makes these tracks stand out way more than the hits of the time! There's a flow to many numbers that's almost in a Stevie Wonder mode – while others get a bit deeper and funkier – and together, the tracks provide a perfect alternate universe of 70s soulful sounds – the kind of work that we've always loved and championed for years here at Dusty Groove!
