Nimbus CollectiveLive In Lotus Land ... CD
Nimbus, 1987. New Copy 2CDs ... $13.99
A lost session of spiritual jazz – recorded in LA in the latter half of the 80s, but with a soaring, righteous vibe that's right up there with the 70s scene! The group here is incredible – an all-star array of the best talents working for Nimbus Records – Nate Morgan on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Jesse Sharps on reeds, Danny Cortez on trumpet, Joel Ector on bass, and Derek Roberts on drums – all moving with the cohesiveness of a well-honed small combo, in territory that's right in line with some of Morgan's most glorious recordings for the label! The use of Kelly on vibes is especially nice – as he's a player we've always loved, but hardly ever get to hear in a setting this ambitious – and his presence on the record makes the whole thing sound even more magical and majestic. Tracks are quite long, with a soaring, searching feel – driven on strongly by Morgan's piano, and topped by some great explorations by Sharps. Titles include "Retribution Reparation", "Big Spliff", "A Bientot", "The Goat & The Ram Jam", "Mfaconi", "Mrafu", "Distant Vibes", and "Journey Into Nigritia". CD

Acid Jazz (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A Scottish sextet, but one with a much fuller sound overall – this great blend of funk, jazz, and a bit of soul – the last of which comes up on the album's few vocal numbers! There's really strong ensemble feel that almost takes us back to the glory days of the Japanese club jazz recordings from earlier in the century, or maybe some of the best British funky jazz moments from this label's earliest years – but Nimbus Sextet also bring a lot more jazz-based sophistication to bear, with really strong arrangements that push things way past the rhythms in search of a strong array of tones and colors! Players include Joe Nichols on keyboards, Martin Fell on saxes, and Euan Allardice on trumpet – and two tracks feature vocals from Anthony Thomasz. Titles include "Lilly White", "Seance", "Trap Door", "Deep Dark Blue Lights", "Klara", and "Dreams Fulfilled". CD

VariousLA's Unsung – Nimbus West Compilation ... CD
Nimbus, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
A very fitting title for a really wonderful compilation – one that features tracks from the catalog of the legendary Nimbus Records label, home to some of the most creative work in the Los Angeles scene at the end of the 70s and beginning of the 80s! Nimbus' main star talent was pianist Horace Tapscott – and the label recorded work by many in Tapscott's creative circle at the time, a rich blend of many different jazz talents, many of whom are still sadly "unsung" even years later. The energy here is similar to the Chicago AACM scene, the St Louis style of the early 70s, or some of the New York loft jazz recordings of the mid 70s – but the Nimbus scene is also characterized by a stronger modal sound, one that creates a lot more rhythmic pulsing in the music, giving many of the tunes on the set a pronounced groove that easily helps them span time and location. Titles in clude "UGMAAGER" by Nate Morgan, "Question" by Jesse Sharps, "Prayer Of Happiness" by Billie Harris, "Mrafu" by Nate Morgan, "Calvary" by Dadisi Komolafe, "Same Shame" by Ricky Kelley, and "Raphael" by Roberto Miranda. Gary BiasEast 101 ... CD
Nimbus, 1981. New Copy ... $9.99
A dream of a record from the LA spiritual underground of the 70s – and one of the only records we've ever seen from reedman Gary Bias! The date's got a soulful depth that makes it one of the most compelling albums on the legendary Nimbus label – a rhythmic pulse that's often modal, and a sense of spiritualism in the solos that often has Gary stretching out strongly on alto, soprano sax, or flute – yet always with an inherent focus, and strong sense of direction! Other players are equally great too – David Tillman on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Roberto Miranda and John Heard on bass, and Fritz Wise on drums – and the tunes are wonderful original numbers that mark Bias as an extremely strong voice in jazz – one that should have gotten better exposure over the years. The album's got a great Strata East sort of vibe – and titles include "As Children Play", "East 101", "Asiki", "Arthur's Vamp", and "Dear Violet". CD

Nimbus, Late 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
Solo piano work from Curtis Clark – an unsung talent from the west coast, and one who's mostly recorded for the Nimbus label in the same open-ended format as Horace Tapscott! The album offers up a more sensitive side of Clark's work than we remember – long tracks that are beautifully personal, and filled with as many gentle moments as they are sharp-edged ones – in ways that almost take us back to some of Thelonious Monk's best solo expressions of the 50s and 60s. Titles are all originals, and tunes include "Reach", "Everlasting Love", "Monk Me", "Renuphee", and "Boogie Stomp". CD

Curtis Clark with Louis MoholoDreams Deferred ... CD
Nimbus, 1993. New Copy ... $9.99
2 great sessions from pianist Curtis Clark – a crucially overlooked player, and one with a style that bridges the modernist gap between Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor! The first 5 tracks on the set are all (coincidentally enough!) tunes by Monk – played with a trio that includes Wayne Dockery on bass and Louis Moholo on drums, in a style that really changes up the mood of the original compositions, yet still keeps all their angular charm. Titles include "Misterioso", "Monk's Mood", "Light Blue", and the great "Worry Later/San Francisco Holiday". The remaining 6 tracks on the CD feature the trio with Dockery and Moholo, expanded to a septet with players that include Tristan Honsiger on cello, Felicity Provan on trumpet, and Tobias Delius on tenor sax. These tunes are nearly all originals by Clark, and some of them are a fair bit straighter than his other work of the time – almost in a soulbop mode on the best numbers. Titles include "Sean", "Two Shadows In The Mist", "Nelson", and "Diaphane". CD

Creative Arts EnsembleOne Step Out ... CD
Nimbus, 1981. New Copy ... $9.99
A great bit of work from the hip LA scene that centered around the Nimbus label at the end of the 70s – a collective who work together here with the same spiritual jazz modes you'd find on labels like Tribe or Strata East! The group features some bigger names from the scene, including some solo Nimbus acts – plus some other overlooked players – a lineup that includes Henry Franklin on bass, George Bohannon on trombone, Wilbert Hemsley on tenor, Dadesi Komolafe on flute, Jeff Clayton on baritone, and Gary Bias on alto and soprano sax. The album's also got some beautiful vocals from BJ Crowley – who co-leads the group, and sings out with a proud righteousness that recalls some of Dee Dee Bridgewater or Jean Carn's early early soul jazz recordings. The tracks are all long and spiraling numbers – never really "out", but in a free searching mode that's a perfect platform for the piano work of the other co-leader, Kaeef Ruzadun. Titles include "One Step Out", "Flashback Of Time", "All Praises Due", and "Stars In Lightyear Time". CD

Billie HarrisI Want Some Water ... CD
Nimbus, 1979/1983. New Copy ... $9.99
A spiritual jazz classic from the hip LA scene of the late 70s – led by saxophonist Billie Harris, and featuring a group that includes Horace Tapscott on piano! We don't know much about Harris, but he's got a freewheeling spiritual sound that's very much in the Coltrane-inspired mode, yet also steeped in the creative improvised style of Tapscott's scene in LA. Tracks are all long, with a sound that builds majestically over time – and the set leaves us wondering why Harris wasn't a bigger player at the time. The core tracks of the CD were recorded in the studio – with Tapscott, Harris, and added bass, percussion, and guest vocals by the enigmatic Lorelei. An additional longer track was recorded live, with a larger group that also includes Adele Sebastian on flute and Sabia Mateen on tenor. And a last track is an 8 minute solo piano number by Tapscott. Titles include "Why Don't You Listen", "I Want Some Water", "Many Nights Ago", "The Advocate", and "Prayer Of Happiness". CD

One of our favorite albums ever on the legendary Nimbus label – and the only set we've ever seen from pianist Linda Hill as a leader! The set's got the same open-ended, spiritually-expressive sound as Adele Sebastian's record for the label – and Sebastian's also a key part of the group, working here on vocal and flute, to give the album a richly righteous sound! The vocals are great, and often feature help from Jugeger Juan Grey – with more soul than usual for this sort of set, but still plenty of jazz elements too – with an offbeat quality that's almost like Oneness Of Juju – often used just to lead off a tune, before the solos come in strongly. Other musicians include Sabir Matteen on tenor, Roberto Miranda on bass, Everett Brown on drums, and Virjilio Figuera on percussion. Titles include "Lullaby For Linda", "Children", "Leland's Song", and "The Creator's Musician". CD

An overlooked gem from west coast vibist Ricky Kelly – a player who only cut a small number of records, but who was kind of an 80s equivalent to some of the hippest Bobby Hutcherson work of the 70s! This album's a bit different than some of the more avant work on the Nimbus Records label – as Kelly plays with a warm modal vibe – echoing some of the spirit of Bobby Hutcherson, and also taking on one of his tunes, and one by Herbie Hancock as well – in a very cool group that features flute from Dadisi Komolafe, piano from David Tillman, bass from James Leary, and drums from Sherman Ferguson – a very hip underground west coast lineup. The whole thing's a stunner – the kind of nice lost session we keep on digging for – and it's got other great numbers that include "Flying Colors", "Yesterdays", "Same Shame", "Dolphin Dance", and "Distant Vibes" – the last of which is a great original track with a nice groove! Soaring spiritual soul jazz from the LA scene – a CD that features a beautiful performance by the Jesse Sharps Quintet, plus a longer extended track from Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra! We'll be honest in saying that we'd never heard of Sharps before this CD – but he's a heck of a great saxophonist, with a sound that recalls the glory days of the Strata East scene, and the beautiful post-Coltrane Muse sessions by Earl & Carl Grubbs. His group for the session features some excellent work by the great Nate Morgan on piano – driving away in long, rhythmic passages that are very much in the mode of Morgan's own Nimbus recordings – and carried through with an equal amount of soul. Horace Tapscott joins the group on two numbers as well – before stepping over to lead his expanded Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra on the CD's extra cut – a composition by Sharps that's entitled "McKowsky's First Fifth" – played by a great Nimbus-esque group that includes Adele Sebastian on flute, Sabia Mateen on tenor, Billie Harris on soprano, and Horace Tapscott on piano. Other titles on the CD include "The Goat & The Ramjam", "As A Child", "Mike's Tune", "Macrame", and "Carnival" – and the whole set of tracks is easily one of the greatest recordings on the legendary Nimbus label! The group's led by alto saxophonist Dadisi Komolafe, and features vibes by Ricky Kelly, piano by Eric Tillman, bass by Roberto Miranda, and drums by Sunship Theus – all working together in a style that's infused with soulful, post-Coltrane exploratory energy, never going too far outside, and always staying true to the rhythmic pulse at its core. Kelly's vibes are really great – sparkling underneath solos by Komolafe that remind us a lot of Gary Bartz's earliest work – and titles include "Calvary", "Speak No Evil", and "Hassan's Walk". Nimbus, 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite records ever on the legendary Nimbus label – a special home to spiritual jazz on the west coast at the end of the 70s – and crucial for giving us some really unique talents like this! Adele Sebastian may have only ever cut this one album as a leader, but she's a hell of a flute player with a very deep, spiritual vibe – these sublime lines that soar and stretch out over modal rhythms – played by a totally hip group that includes Rickey Kelley on vibes, Roberto Miranda on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums and a bit of gembreh – a string instrument that brings a nicely exotic vibe to the record. The group's rounded out by Bobby West on piano and Daoude Woods on percussion – and the songs have this open flow that's wonderful – never too far out, but always searching – as the group soar through a version of McCoy Tyner's "Man From Tanganyika", plus the tracks "Desert Fairy Princess", "Belize", "Prayer For The People", and "Day Dreamer". Really beautiful work from pianist Horace Tapscott – working here in a mode that crosses some of the freer inclinations of his solo sessions for the Nimbus label with some of the deeper spiritual currents of his large group recordings of the time! The group's just a trio – with Sonship on percussion and the mighty Roberto Miranda on bass – the last of whom does a really fantastic job of setting the tone, with this round, rich sound that really holds things together – even when Horace is getting a bit free on his solos! All tracks are nice and long, and thanks to Miranda, there's a nice sort of modal energy on the set – a balance between structure and freedom that's really wonderful, and which gets at the core of Tapscott's best achievements on record. Titles include the extended "St Michael" – plus the tracks "Lino's Pad" and "Close To Freedom". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best trio sessions we've ever heard from Horace Tapscott – warmer and a bit more soulful than some of his other sides of this nature, and played with a well-rounded style that really hits home! The group features great drum work from Ben Riley, and bass by Fred Hopkins – and the set list includes some of Tapscott's excellent original compositions, the kind of blocky, searching tunes that have always made his writing a favorite of ours. Titles include "Sandy & Niles", "As A Child", "To The Great House", and "Chico's Back In Town". CD

LP, Vinyl record album

LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful record of upright bass solo work, ranging from emotive arco playing to nice throbbing pizzicato. Miranda has played with John Carter & Bobby Bradford and cut another great, more soulful side for Nimbus with a larger group of his own. The playing throughout is spacious, even it's most full moments never gets too busy, with a deep spiritual quality, clear through the themes he chooses in the titles: "Evolution On The Life Of Moses", "Saint Michael Servant Of The Lord" and "Imagined Dance For Solo Bass". Nimbus, 1979. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A never-issued live set from this legendary Los Angeles collective – a spiritual avant ensemble working under the leadership of pianist Horace Tapscott, really stretching out here on a variety of very long tracks recorded at a special live performance in 1979! The 3LP space of the record really gets at the range of expression going on under Tapscott's leadership – as some tracks are quite free, others have more structure – and all bristle with the individual contributions of the members of the group – a stunning lineup that also features piano from Linda Hill, flute from Adele Sebastian, tenor from Sabir Matteen and Desta Walker, soprano from Billie Harris, trombone from Lester Robertson, baritone from Johnny Williams, cello from Louis Spears, bass from Alan Hines and David Bryant, and percussion from Conga Mike, Billy Hinton, and Daa'Oud Woods. This is definitely some of the boldest playing we've ever heard from the Arkestra – and that's really saying a lot – stepping out strongly on titles that include "Noisseprahs", "Bibi Mkuu", "Village Dance"," Leland's Song", "Linda's Story", and "Listen My Children". One of the most ambitious albums ever from pianist Horace Tapscott – a double-length set that has him working with a large lineup of underground musicians from the 70s Los Angeles scene – all united in spirit and power as the Pan-African Peoples Arkestra! Tapscott's piano directs the group strongly – as an extension of the vision that he brought to the late 60s Sonny's Dream album by Sonny Criss – but the music is freer, more spiritual, and often graced with bursts of ensemble energy, balanced by some really tremendous solos from other musicians too! The Nimbus Records spirit lives again – on these two long tracks by the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – a group who are best known for their famous recordings with Horace Tapscott, and who have a spiritual legacy on the LA scene that goes back to 1961! At some level, the record is a celebration of the group's 60 years of music – and mixed older and younger musicians from the scene together, as they take on two tunes by Horace Tapscott, one of which was co-written by Linda Hill, who also provided some lyrics. "Nyja's Theme" is a long-flowing spiritual number that really lives up to the group's legacy – with work from Carlos Nino on percussion, Derf Reklaw on congas, Michael Session on alto, Randal Fisher on tenor, Aaron Shaw on baritone, Riyan El Magharbel on oboe, Youself El Magharbel on bassoon, Yaseen El Magharbel on trumpet, and Zekkereya El Magharbel on trombone – a combination of horns that comes off beautifully, over long-spun piano lines from Jamael Dean, who also arranged the cut. Sharada Shashidhar songs on "Little Africa" – bringing a beautiful voice to the spirit of the song, as the group soars in modal energy and tonal colors! 12-inch, Vinyl record

An amazing record from pianist Horace Tapscott – maybe one of his most ambitious projects ever, and a set that stands head and shoulders next to his classic work for the Nimbus label! As with some of those records, this set features his large Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – performing live at LACMA in 1998, and also augmented by a vocal choir at times – working with a sense of pride and power that's very much in the best 70s spiritual jazz mode! We honestly didn't know that Tapscott had continued the group this far into the 90s – we've only heard them on record up through the early 80s – and the lineup really represents the maturing vision of the music, with some especially great work from Tapscott on piano, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Michael Session on soprano, alto, and tenor – plus lead vocals from the mighty Dwight Trible. A never-issued live performance from the Nimbus Records scene in LA – a spiritual gem that features bassist Roberto Miranda in the lead, working with some key other players from the city at the time! Miranda's always been one of the secret heroes of the underground west coast scene – a bassist and percussionist whose talents graced some really great records, even if he barely recorded as a leader on his own (a few great records on Nimbus) – and his leadership here is maybe more of that as a creative collaborator, helping to bring together Bobby Bradford on cornet and trumpet, John Carter on clarinet, James Newton on flute, and Horace Tapscott on piano! Some numbers have a fair bit of added percussion, some in the Latin mode – and the feeling of the set is nicely different than work led by Tapscott during the same period, and Carter and Bradford too – equally excellent, but with a very fresh side of their talents. No standards here, as the tracks are all originals – written by reedman Ralph Thomas and the rest of his group – to create the sort of unique little record that really keeps us digging for rare jazz over the years! Thomas grew up in Chicago, where he soaked up the soulful sounds of both the west side and the AACM – but the set was recorded after he'd moved to Los Angeles, at the suggestion of some of his contemporaries – where he was able to bring together some equally inventive players, while also working as part of the same hip scene that included Horace Tapscott and Nate Morgan! Some of the rhythms here recall some of Morgan's music on the Nimbus label, but there's maybe a bit more of a soul current too – with Thomas on alto, tenor, soprano, and flute – amidst guitar, keyboards, drums, flute, and some especially nice percussion – all to craft rhythms that move between spiritual, modal, and more conventionally soulful styles – a vibe that's maybe a bit like some of the 70s Detroit work on the Strata label. Japan always had a few big names in jazz that got exported overseas, but the work here is from some of the smaller names who were still turning out incredible music – much of it only issued on vinyl, and not reissued later – brought together here with copious notes that really tell you a heck of a lot about the music!
