Nikki GiovanniLike A Ripple On A Pond ... CD
Atlantic/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A tremendous little record from a time when whole new ideas of righteous pride and power were hitting the record racks – a moment that's perfectly summed up in a treasure like this! Poet Nikki Giovanni had already gotten some acclaim for her words on paper – and here, the message of her writing is blended with stunning work from the New York Community Choir – a very hip gospel group with lots of secular elements in their rhythms and arrangements – handled here wonderfully by director Benny Diggs. Nikki speaks her own words in between sung passages by the group – for a set that's got a very deep spirit, and strong secular appeal too. Titles include "Conversation", "Prison Poem", "Mothers", "Straight Talk", and the great "Scrapbook", set to Duke Pearson's "Christo Redentor". CD

Nikki GiovanniTruth Is On Its Way ... CD
Right On/Modern Harmonic, 1971. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
An amazing setting for the righteous words and message of Nikki Giovanni – as the set has the poet working with backing vocals by the New York Community Choir, who also recorded a great soul album on RCA around the same time – and an overall approach that elevates Nikki's poetry into a very spiritual realm! There's definitely some gospel currents to the music, but Givoanni's words and spoken passages have much more down to earth concerns – the mix of political and personal themes that made her one of the most important young black poets of her generation. The whole thing is fantastic – very powerful throughout, with titles that include "My Tower", "Poem For A Lady Of Leisure Now Retired", "Second Rapp Poem", "Great Pax Whitey", "Poem For Aretha", and "Ego Tripping". Nikki GiovanniWay I Feel (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Niktom/Modern Harmonic, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
One of the funkiest albums ever cut by the mighty Nikki Giovanni – a set that has these fantastic arrangements from Arif Mardin that are in the best style of early 70s Atlantic Records soul – provided with drums from Bernard Pretty Purdie, keyboards from Richard Tee, guitar from Cornell Dupree, and bass from Doug Bascomb! Yet over and above the music, Nikki's clearly the star of the set – delivering her own words in a blend of funk and poetry that really sets a whole new standard for the genre – even amidst some of the heavy company that Giovanni was keeping at the time. Titles include "A Certain Peace", "The Women Gather", "The Way I Feel", "Just An NY Poem", "Seduction/Kidnap Poem", "Winter Poem", and "My House". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nikki GiovanniReason I Like Chocolate ... LP
Folkways, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful post-Atlantic album from Nikki Giovanni – much more intimate and personal than her better known work, with only Nikki's voice throughout the album – heard on a number of shorter poems! At some level, Giovanni seems to have left behind the more righteous themes of before, and is going for a mode here that's a bit more everyday – but still touched with the deeper reflections that make her so great. The titles of the poems tell enough about the subject matter – and they include "Parent's Never Understand", "Mommie's Daddies", "Ego Tripping", "James Shell's Snowball Stand", "Knoxville Tennessee", "Winter Poem", "The Drum", and "Kidnap Poem". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, and a small bit of marker and a stamp in one corner.)

✨✧ Sonia SanchezSun Lady For All Seasons Reads Her Poetry ... CD
Folkways, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very righteous work from this obscure 70s poet – a contemporary to Nikki Giovanni, Camille Yarbrough, and others – but not nearly as widely recorded! The album features no instrumentation, just Sonia reading her poems – and the work itself is pretty progressive, very much in the spirit of other hip female poets of the time, although perhaps a bit more personal in some of the subject matter – especially given that the album is introduced by Sanchez as "talking about love – a black woman's love for her man, children, nation." Titles include "A Black Woman Speaks", "Listen To Big Black", "Liberation Poem", "A Needed Poem For My Salvation", "When We Come", "It's A New Day", and "To Anita". 24 tracks in all. CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)
