Beautiful ECM work from trumpeter Kenny Wheeler – the kind of set that shows why the label was such a great home for the sorts of styles he was really exploring in later years! There's a careful balance here between the excellent elements of the group – a drum and piano-less quartet that features Bill Frisell on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Lee Konitz on alto – all players who have an expert ear for working together in open space without a net, all very much at their shimmering best in a setting like this! Wheeler's got some fantastic mature phrasing on both trumpet and flugelhorn – really showing how much his sound had evolved by this point – and titles include "Angel Song", "Past Present", "Present Past", "Nicolette", "Kind Folk", "Unti", and "Kind Of Gentle".
