✨✧ Tullio De PiscopoSotto E N'Coppa ... CD
Carosello/New Platform (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Italian drummer Tullio De Piscopo is at his most dynamic here – working with his Revolt Group, in a blend of styles that's very heavy on percussion and electric jazz! At some level, the vibe is a bit like some of the more hard-hitting fusion of the Billy Cobham generation in the US – but there's also some different touches in the mix, as additional percussionists are added to the lineup – which also features Fender Rhodes and moog from the mighty Sante Palumbo, plus saxes from Peter Guidi and Giorgio Baiocco, and guitar from Sergio Farina! The music's definitely in the more jamming side of the European fusion world of the time – jazz, influenced by a bit of prog – although nicely changed up in song modes from track to track, which definitely keeps things interesting. Titles include "O Sipario", "Sotto E Ncoppa", "Porta Capuana In Festa", "Tarantella Po Scugnizzo", and "Rettifilo Ora Di Punta". CD

✨✧ Tullio De PiscopoFuture Percussion ... CD
Carosello/New Platform (Italy), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best-ever albums from Italian drummer Tullio De Piscopo – a very spiritual set that draws a heck of a lot from work on the session by tenorist Larry Nocella – who's tremendous throughout, and may well deliver one of his best performances on record! Tullio is nice and loose, and very open – different than on some other records, and really moving in sympathy with the bass of Lucio Terzano and piano of Luigi Benefede, in lines that are warm, lyrical, and often modal – a quality that's augmented by the guitar work of Giorgio Cocilovo, and which really seems to have Nocella finding a whole new range in his music! Luis Agudo is a special guest on the set, adding lots of additional percussion to the proceedings – and titles include "Barbara", "La Mia Natura", "Scetete/Garrison My Dear", "Say It", and "For Larry". Aksak MaboulRedrawn Figures 1 (with download) ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 2022. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
If the "figures" in the title here sounds a bit familiar, it's because Figures was a great return to form for the legendary Aksak Maboul – a record that showed that their unusual mix of sounds and styles was alive and well into the 21st Century – used here as a platform for new creation by a hosts of artists and producers invited to the project by the group! These tracks aren't remixes, and are definitely "redrawn" in the spirit of the title – fresh music that moves between a variety of modes, but which often still retains the leaner feel of the group in their current incarnation. Titles on this first volume include "Silhouettes (Vanishing Twin rmx)", "C'est Charles (Shungu rmx)", "Eyelids & Phosphenes (Aksak Maboul reconstruction)", "Hotel Suites (Carl Stone redesign)", "Un Caid (Spooky J rmx)", and "Retour Chez A (Kate NV rmx)". Digital UndergroundSex Packets (180 gram blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Tommy Boy, 1990. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $32.99 33.99
A fantastic debut from Digital Underground – an early 90s classic that opened the door for a whole new audience for hip hop at the time! The set effortlessly mixes old school funk with contemporary hip hop modes – and also maybe brings back in a bit of the party sort of vibe of early hip hop from New York – but with a definitely west coast spin here, given the heavy use of bass! The record opened the door for a whole new level of appreciation of older styles of soul and funk – while also giving both the group and hip hop in general a new platform from which to speak – one that was maybe seen by some as slightly commercial at the time, but which has gone on to be an undeniable part of the hip hop legacy! Titles include the hits "Doowutchyalike" and "Humpty Dance" – plus "Freaks of the Industry", "The Way We Swing", "Sex Packets", "Street Scene", "Packet Man", "Underwater Rimes (rmx)", "The New Jazz", "Rhymin On The Funk", "The Danger Zone", and "Packet Reprise". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition on clear blue vinyl – 2LPs, for better sound than the original!)

Aretha FranklinWho's Zoomin Who? ... LP
Arista, 1985. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A huge hit for Aretha Franklin – and a record that brought her famous vocals to a whole new generation of listeners! The sound is definitely different than before – a change from both the deep soul of Atlantic years, and the initial classy approach of her time at Arista – and working with lots of help from Narada Michael Walden, Aretha gets an 80s groove that turns out to be a perfect platform for her sound – one that lets her vocals really take off, while still getting plenty of great hooks as well – all in a mode that somehow sounds far less commercial than we remember at the time. Includes the massive hits "Freeway Of Love" and "Who's Zoomin Who" – plus "Ain't Nobody Every Loved You", "Push", "Integrity", "Sisters Are Doin It For Themselves", and "Sweet Bitter Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Canadian pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Slave/Steve Arrington/AurraSlave/Steve Arrington/Aurra – The Definitive Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 38.99
The first-ever group-spanning collection of work from the family of Slave – the late 70s funk powerhouse that was also linked to the group's Aurra and Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame! The package is heavy on work from Slave – that bass-heavy group who really revolutionized the sound of funk in the late 70s – creating a lean groove that was tight and right on the money, and providing a perfect platform for so many new artists to leap off into the 80s! The group also boasted members Steve Washington and Steve Arrington – the former of whom would launch Aurra, a great funk group famous for their Salsoul Records material – the latter of whom was lead singer Steve Arrington, who'd enjoy a great run under his own name in the 80s! This package brings together a massive amount of greatness from everyone involved – Aurra tracks that include "Are You Single", "Checking You Out", "Make Up Your Mind", "Such A Feeling", and "In The Mood To Groove"; Steve Arrington cuts "You Meet My Approval", "Weak At The Knees", "Feel So Real", and "Dancin In The Key Of Life"; and Slave cuts that include "Slide", "Screw Your Wig On Tite", "Are You Ready For Love", "Stellar Fungk", "Feel My Love", "Shine", "Funky Lady", "Snap Shot", "Party Lites", "Life Can Be Happy", "Great American Funk Song", "Stone Jam", "Sizzlin Hot", "Watching You", "Son Of Slide", "Party Hardy", and "Drac Is Back". 44 cuts in all! ✨✧ James Brandon LewisDivine Travels ... CD
Okeh, 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful showcase for the tenor talents of James Brandon Lewis – a player who's just starting out on what will most likely be a rich career – but who's already able here to match his energy with the great William Parker on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums! The album's got this loose trio format that really hearkens back not just to older avant eras – especially the New York scene of the 60s and 70s – but also the Sonny Rollins trio mode of the late 50s, heard most famously on his Blue Note recordings with Wilbur Ware. Like Rollins, Lewis has a great way of respecting the bassist in this format – often working with Parker's energy to find this deep soul which serves as a platform to then step out and soar – relatively free at times, but never too far outside to lose the sense of spirituality that drives the record. At some level, the set's almost got a vibe that's like the best David S Ware/William Parker collaborations – and titles include "Tradition", "Desensitized", "Divine", "A Gathering Of Souls", "Enclosed", and "No Wooden Nickels". CD
(Out of print, still sealed with a small cutout hole through the case.)

✨✧ Sunny Murray's Untouchable FactorApple Cores ... LP
Philly Jazz, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest, tightest sessions ever recorded by drummer Sunny Murray – a large group set recorded with his Untouchable Factor group – a great ensemble that includes Frank Foster on soprano sax, Oliver Lake and Arthur Blythe on alto saxes, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Don Pullen on piano, and Cecil McBee and Fred Hopkins on bass! The sound is somewhat straighter than Murray's free jazz of a few years before – almost in the mode that Foster was exploring with some of his large ensembles of the 70s – a platform for righteous jazz expression, but in a way that's still tied together strongly with a sense of rhythm. Other players on the group include the enigmatic Youseff Yancy on a host of instruments, including theremin – plus the under-recorded Monette Sudler on guitar. Some tracks are a bit more outside than others – and titles include "Past Perfect Tense", "One Down & One Up", "Applebluff", "Apple Cores", and "New York Maze". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roberto Miranda's Home Music EnsembleLive At Bing Theater – Los Angeles 1985 ... CD
Dark Tree (France), 1985. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A never-issued live performance from the Nimbus Records scene in LA – a spiritual gem that features bassist Roberto Miranda in the lead, working with some key other players from the city at the time! Miranda's always been one of the secret heroes of the underground west coast scene – a bassist and percussionist whose talents graced some really great records, even if he barely recorded as a leader on his own (a few great records on Nimbus) – and his leadership here is maybe more of that as a creative collaborator, helping to bring together Bobby Bradford on cornet and trumpet, John Carter on clarinet, James Newton on flute, and Horace Tapscott on piano! Some numbers have a fair bit of added percussion, some in the Latin mode – and the feeling of the set is nicely different than work led by Tapscott during the same period, and Carter and Bradford too – equally excellent, but with a very fresh side of their talents. Titles include "Agony In The Garden", "Dance Of Blessing Happiness & Peace", "Improvised Bass Solo", "Deborah Tasmin", "Faith", and "Platform For Freedom". CD
