New OrderEverythings Gone Green/Cries & Whispers/Mesh ... 12-inch
Factory (Belgium), 1981. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Just Sold Out!
One of the first really catchy songs to ever come from New Order – but served up here on a single that still retains some of the moodier elements of their Joy Division years! At some level, "Everything's Gone Green" is almost a blueprint for everything that would follow – "Blue Monday" and beyond – but it's also more spare, and has the spacey guitar lines almost speaking more than the vocals! Backed here by the excellent "Cries & Whispers" and "Mesh". 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Original pressing. Cover is lightly bent at the top right corner.)

New OrderMurder/Thieves Like Us ... 12-inch
Factory/Parlophone, 1984. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $15.99
"Murder" is a great statement of evolution from New Order – a track that has a title that would have been right at home in the Joy Division years, and the same sort of heavy drums you'd hear on Closer – but a more far-reaching sense of progression as the murky vocals mix with all sorts of nice guitar clusters and electronic elements! The track is backed by "Thieves Like Us" – a fantastically tuneful single from New Order – but one that also still has the group at their best pre-pop level – catchy, but moody at the same time – with really strong basswork from Peter Hook, and a keyboard line that's light and dreamy as a nice contrast! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Factory/Parlophone, 1984. New Copy (pic cover)... $15.99
A fantastically tuneful single from New Order – but one that also still has the group at their best pre-pop level – catchy, but moody at the same time – with really strong basswork from Peter Hook, and a keyboard line that's light and dreamy as a nice contrast! That great bass returns on "Lonesome Tonight" – a surprisingly lovely little song, with the vocals actually opening up in a heartfelt way – but all without ever being cloying – that perfect balance that made this period so great for the group! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ New OrderPower Corruption & Lies (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Factory/Rhino, 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Arguably the most perfect record ever from New Order – a stunning second full length set that has the group emerging from the turgid depths of the early post-Ian Curtis years, and before the schmaltzy pop of the John Hughes generation! The electronics are wonderful – definitely a few generations ahead of their time, especially in the way they realize all the north England experimentation of the time, but bring it into more tuneful territory – yet never without losing its edge. The group produced the record themselves, and managed to hold onto lots of the best lessons learned from Martin Hannett – and there's a tightness and economy to the songwriting that holds up beautifully over the years. Titles include "Ultraviolence", "The Village", "We All Stand", "Your Silent Face", and the lovely "Leave Me Alone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Super-heavy pressing – better than the original!)

Marvin GayeWhat's Going On – Live ... CD
Motown, 1972. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A tremendous live performance from Marvin Gaye – recorded at the Kennedy Center in 1972, and based around his classic album What's Going On – yet handled in a completely different way! The set's not just a straight reading of the record – as the song order is different, and the presentation is unusual too – with Marvin at the piano, bringing a more intimate style to some of the songs – while also opening them up with looser, more fluid backings – all in ways that show us just how much was going on in his ever-fertile mind during this high point of creativity! The material was issued originally as a bonus CD of the deluxe release of the core album – but it stands proudly here on its own, in a new package that also offers up an even better mix of the music than before. Titles include "Wholy Holy", "Save The Children", "Right On", "Inner City Blues", "What's Going On", "Flyin High", and "God's Love" – plus a very cool 13 minute "Sixties Medley", which offers changed-up takes on Marvin Gaye tunes from the earlier years of Motown. Ralph J GleasonMusic In The Air (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 30.00
Ralph J Gleason might just be one of the coolest cats to ever write about music – a key part of the San Francisco scene during the postwar years – where his talents helped illuminate both the worlds of art and music during the beat generation – then really helped shine a spotlight on all the cultural changes in the city during the 60s – which even led to Gleason's role in the founding of Rolling Stone magazine! Gleason always had a great eye (and ear) for things that were new and special, but never in a way that was slavish to the moment – or to its creator – and the book features an initial section on his writings on jazz and blues – with essays on John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Carmen McRae, BB King, John Handy, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster, the San Francisco Jazz scene, and other diverse topics. The second section features Gleason on folk and rock – with bits on Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Odetta, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and others – and the final section features articles on politics and culture – covering topics that include Richard Nixon, radio payola, Law & Order, flower children, and other slices of society, seen from the Gleason viewpoint. Book is hardcover, and 309 pages. Book

Arto Lindsay/Joe McPhee/Ken Vandermark/Phil SudderbergLargest Afternoon ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
A set that's brimming over with improvising jazz talent – but one that's an especially great reminder of the guitar genius of the great Arto Lindsay! Lindsay is amazing here – playing with energy to match the brilliance of Ken Vandermark and Joe McPhee – which is really saying a lot, and which has us almost feeling like a younger version of Arto's self stepped forward straight from the New York no wave scene, in order to create a pan-historical bridge with the improvising strengths of the Corbett Vs Dempsey universe! Drummer Phil Sudderberg is wonderful too – a master of sounds and moments – and the short tracks allow for plenty of sharp changes, and shifts in energy between each selection. McPhee blows alto, tenor, and pocket trumpet – and Vandermark is on tenor, baritone, and clarinet – on titles that include "The Push & Pull Beneath The Surface", "She Must Have Known", "Whether You Were There Or Not", "When I Lose Any Sense Of Perspective", and "The World's Longest Afternoon". Junior ParkerLove Ain't Nothin' But A Business Goin' On (aka Outside Man) ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the funkiest albums ever from Junior Parker – a great little set that shows he had a lot more to offer than just the average bluesman! The album's got a nice little soul sound in the backings – tight rhythms from Horace Ott, who nicely avoids a lot of the cliches that the blues business was hitting at the time – in order to keep Junior in hip territory that's filled with breaking drums and heavy basslines! There's a few key crossover tracks here, plus some surprisingly sweeter numbers – and the album's a gem through and through – well-appreciated by new generations over the years, thanks to its diversity of tracks! Titles include a great break version of "Taxman" – plus two more Beatles numbers, "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Lady Madonna" – and the tracks "Outside Man", "Darling Depend On Me", "You Know I Love You", "River's Invitation", and "Just To Hold My Hand". PilotPilot – The Albums (From The Album Of The Same Name/Second Flight/Morin Heights/Two's A Crowd/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
EMI/7T's (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Sharp hooks, huge melodies, and 70s guitar pop greatness from Pilot – a genius pop group who only gave the world a handful of records, all of them pretty darn great! From The Album Of The Same Name includes their signature tune, "Magic" – and it's one of those songs everyone knows, whether or not they no who made it – but Pilot soars all around on these tunes. The guitars have punch, but the falsetto vocals are the main cabin of this vessel – and it's grand 70s soft rock of the first order! Other tracks include "Just A Smile", Lucky For Some", "Girl Next Door", "Sooner Or Later", "Never Give Up", "Sky Blue", "Never Give Up", and "Over The Moon". Second Flight is the excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more, plus the bonus demos "You're Devotion", "Love Is", "January" and "Lady Luck". Morin Heights is later work from 70s soft rock tunesmiths Pilot – a couple years on from their biggest hit, but still making gloriously catchy tunes! The hallmarks of their earlier stuff is here, with some twists & turns. The lyrics are the kind of lovestruck or lovelorn naivete that's cloying to some, and hopelessly endearing to others – relying more this time out and an overall catchiness than huge choruses and hummable singles. We'd fly with these guys anytime! Titles include "Hold On", "Canada", "First After Me", "Steps", "The Mover", "Penny In My Pocket", and "Maniac". Two's A Crowd is the last full 70s album from Pilot – just a duo by this point, but working with all the punch and panache of their early records! As before, their ability for hook-heavy tunes is amazing – as there's so many numbers here that could have been huge AM radio hits, but which also have some surprisingly thoughtful lyrical touches, and arrangements that are simple, but which really pack a hell of a punch. Titles include "Monday Tuesday", "Big Screen Kill", "Creeping Round At Midnight", "Library Door", and "Mr Do Or Die". CD features lots of related bonus tracks – including "Pamela", "Ra Ta Ta", "Just Let Me Be", "Maniac", "Us", "Lady Luck", "No Ties No Strings", "Are You In Love", "Just A Smile", and "Stop & Let Go". BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP & 7 inch Gatefold ... $28.99 30.99
A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. Titles include "No More Games" by Larry Wedgeworth & Clique, "All In Good Time" by Wildlife featuring Vi Taylor, "Play It By Ear" by Cojo, "Get Up & Dance Don't Want No Party Poo Pershere" by Carrie Mims & Herbe Lee River Junction, "Feel The Music" by Dreamflight, "I Want Your Body" by Royale, "Free For All" by Second Wind, "I'm Gonna Get You (Meeow)" by Carrie Mims & Herb Lee River Junction, "You Make Me Happy" by Christopher Michael Band, "Keep It Comin On" by Gypsy, and "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics. Brigade Nouveau (Germany), 2003. Used ... $8.99
The first release from a great new label – one that we'll be hearing plenty from in years to come! Brigade Nouveau is devoted to updating the sounds of the 60s – taking older bossa, mod, and groovy jams – and spinning them out with a cooler and more abstract approach, in the spirit of some of our favorite retro work on labels like Irma, Schema, and Compost! The man behind the magic is Zack Stingl, well known to us for his great ear in compiling sets of classic original easy tunes – which makes him more than the right person to head up such an effort. Titles include "Belem Minha Cidade" by Bobby Brazil, "South Of Order" by Panaman, "Place De La Concorde" by Audio Empire, "Cocktails & Candlelights" by Linda Paris, "Supernatural (short mix)" by Earl Harbour, "Papaver Orientale" by Jardin Botanico, "Natura Morte" by Osaka Soundlab, "Voce Abusou" by Luigi Ladu & Margarita Gonzalez, "Night At The Tropicana" by Dos Dynamicos, and "I Am A Legend" by Rude Rock Hunter. ✨✧ William ParkerI Plan To Stay A Believer – The Inside Songs Of Curtis Mayfield (with bonus download) ... LP
Aum Fidelity, 2010. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! Titles include "I Plan To Stay A Believer", "This Is My Country", "People Get Ready/The Inside Song", "Ya He Hey Ya", "New World Order", and a great 17 minute take on "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue". ✨✧ Archie SheppAttica Blues ... CD
Impulse, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic of spiritual, soulful jazz – and one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums! The set was recorded in New York after a few free and festive years in Paris, and it's an amazing about-face that has Archie stepping into a world of righteous, full-on, political, and funky themes – the likes of which are far more outspoken than any of his previous recordings. The group on the set is quite a large one – hip New York underground players, a small string ensemble, and even a few singers – like soul diva Joshie Armstead and vocalist Joe Lee Wilson. Overall, the sound's somewhere in the same place as the Art Ensemble of Chicago's amazing Les Stances A Sophie – in that the record comes from a free jazz tradition, but moves into a more rhythmic focus in order to communicate its message. The added vocals and recitations are wonderful – very moving, and much less hippy-dippy than on other Shepp records of the time – and the whole thing holds together with a unique sound and substance that's made it a treasure that holds up again and again. A true gem, and one we'll never part with! Tracks include "Quiet Dawn", "Goodbye Sweet Pops", "Steam (parts 1 & 2)", "Attica Blues", "Blues For Brother George Jackson", and "Ballad For A Child". CD

✨✧ Ballister (Nilssen-Love/Rempis/Lonberg-Holm)Znachki Stilyag ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. World Circuit/Nonesuch, 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The second album recorded by Cuban vocal legend Ibrahim Ferrer in the wake of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon – and maybe the best! Ferrer's vocals are superb throughout – and the production is relatively stripped down, and never too intrusive – even when producer Ry Cooder is getting some time on the tracks on guitar. To our ears, the best musical element may be the bassist Cachaito – whose rock-solid lines ground everything perfectly – on titles that include "No Tiene Telarana", "Naufragio", "Fuiste Cruel", "Boquinene", "Boliviana", and "Hay Que Entrarle A Palos A Ese". This new version features fresh mastering by Ry Cooder, a shifted song order, and unreleased tracks that include "Ojos Malvados", "Me Voy Pa Sibanicu", "Mujer", and "Ven Conmigo Guajira". CD

An incredible tribute to one of the hippest clubs in the world back in the 80s – Manchester's legendary Hacienda, home to Factory Records, but also a great spot to pick up on some of the most cutting-edge grooves of the time! The Hacienda had a great reputation not only for breaking some of the best electronic work in the UK, but also for picking up on some of the key trends in American underground – especially electro and early house, which were introduced to British audiences strongly by the club. This 2CD package really does a great job of recreating the Hacienda vibe – not just through a selection of 23 key tracks, but also with a beautiful booklet of notes by Tim Lawrence, who really goes into detail on the club along with plenty of vintage photos. A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. An amazing package, and an amazing moment in the career of Charlie Parker – the beginning of his relationship with Verve Records producer Norman Granz – who really helped refine Bird's talents, and also open him up in some new creative directions! The material here originally came out on 10" LPs on the Mercury and Clef labels, but they're also the birth of the Verve Records sound too – top-shelf presentation, and care that Charlie Parker may not have been getting from previous labels like Dial or Savoy! The set features the first two volumes of Charlie Parker With Strings – amazing music that has Bird's sharp-edged alto soaring out over some modern string arrangements – really standard-setting experiments that so many others followed in years to come! Next is Bird & Diz – a sublime pairing with Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet. Charlie Parker Plays South Of The Border is a key cubop session – Bird's alto with Latin rhythms – an equally groundbreaking match as his strings sessions! Last is the self titled Charlie Parker album – a great quartet session, with titles that include the classics "Confirmation" and "Now's The Time". New material from the legendary Alessandro Alessandroni – one of the key forces in helping define the sound of Italian film scores in the 60s and sound library material in the 70s – still alive and well here, and working in a style that's maybe a more intimately focused presentation of his talents! The maestro handles lead instruments throughout, echoing all of the special solo sound he'd use on soundtracks – both under his own name, and with other composers, like Ennio Morricone – and the set features Alessandroni on guitars, keyboard, recorder, mandolin, and accordion – plus some of his famous whistling work too! The set was produced by his son, who handles some other instruments too – and there's light touches of strings on a number of tunes. A fantastic album from this groundbreaking Latin combo from Chicago – one who've got an inclusive spirit that grabs together so many different elements of music and unifies them as one! The style isn't quite salsa, isn't Latin rock or jazz – but instead has so many strands of sounds coming together at once – not colliding, but really merging and making something beautiful and new in the process – always with a sound that's proud, righteous, and very aware of its power to change! In a time of borders and boundaries, the approach is especially welcome – and it's our guess that we'll be hearing plenty from Dos Santos in years to come. The album features some guest work from the Antibalas horns, arranged by Nick Mazzarella – plus cornet from Ben LaMar Gay – on titles that include "Cordva", "Purisma", "Manos Ajenas", "How Far Are We From Here", "You Are My Revolution", "Caminante", "Logos", "Return Y Regreso", and "Acabame". A long-overdue look at the 45rpm legacy of Aretha Franklin at Atlantic Records – a set that brings together all the great singles she cut during her early years at the label – some of which you'll know as the cornerstones of her albums from the time, others that are maybe a bit more obscure! All tracks are presented in their tight 45rpm single mixes – and titles include "Call Me", "Spirit In The Dark", "Don't Play That Song", "Border Song", "Share Your Love With Me", "My Song", "The Weight", "See Saw", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "The House That Jack Built", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Baby I Love You", "Respect", "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Don't Play That Song", "Eleanor Rigby", "Natural Woman", "You Send Me", "Tracks Of My Tears", and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You". 2CD set features 9 more tracks than the 2LP version – with titles that include "Let It Be", "You & Me", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Pledging My Love/The Clock", "Prove It", "Dr Feelgood", and "It Ain't Fair". Instant Composers Pool (Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink, Willem Breuker & Others)Incipient ICP – 1966 to 1971 ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 25.00
Rare music from this legendary Dutch free jazz collective – all pulled from the earliest years of the project, when the ICP group were every bit as important to improvised music as combos in the German and French scenes! The core players here are Misha Mengelberg on piano, Han Bennink on drums, and Willem Breuker on reeds – but with all ICP recordings, the "pool" is the most important part – as the lineup shifts fantastically, always in pursuit of new improvising possibilities – spontaneous creation amidst musicians who also include Manfred Schoof on cornet and flugelhorn, Theo Loevendie on soprano sax, Piet Noordijk on alto, Frederic Rzewski on electronics, and Willem Van Manen on trombone. Some moments have even more unusual instrumentation – steel drums, electrified viola, accordion, toy instruments, and amplified recorder – and throughout it all, the sense of unified group action and individual improvisation is tremendous. Most of the work on the CD has been unissued before – save for one track from the 53CD box ICP, and three more from a rare Dutch Jazz Scene LP box set from Radio Netherlands. 2CD set features 17 tracks in all – and titles include "Piano Distance", "Adebar Der Geheimnisvolle", "Jump Italiano", "Viet Cong", "Session No 1", "New Alto", "ICP 4 14 Write Your Own Part", "Stch Shuffle", "Siep", "Angels", and "Trammermusik". Khruangbin get a great new sound here – thanks to the vocals and acoustic guitar of Leon Bridges, who bring a whole new dimension to their music! The title and cover of the record are very well-put – as there's this open space to the record that's a bit different than previous outings by Khruangbin – still that aesthetic that lingers somewhere south, down near the border – but maybe more relaxed and letting itself flow down the road to some territory that's all its own – the marvelous vocals of Leon Bridges at the wheel, with the rest of the group well-tuned to make the journey with a warm dose of mellow soul. Titles include "Midnight", "C-Side", "Conversation", and "Texas Sun". CD

Gary McFarland & Clark TerryTijuana Jazz ... LP
Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good Gatefold ... $29.99
A very groooooovy set! This one has Gary working with his "& Co" ensemble – including here the 2 guitars of Barry Galbraith and Toots Thielemans, the fender bass of Bob Brookmeyer, and the trumpet work of Clark Terry and Joe Newman. The groove is jazzy Mexican – kind of a way hipper take on the Tijuana sound than Herb Albert could ever hope for – and with Gary on organ, vibes, and marimba, the core groove is really great all the way through. Very hip stuff – and with tracks that include "Fantastic, That's You", "South Of The Border", "Tijuana", "Mary Jane", "Granny's Samba", "Soul Bird", and "Ira Schwartz's Golden Dream". Singers UnlimitedMagic Voices – 7CD Box Set ... CD
MPS/Motor (Germany), Early 70s. Used 7CD ... $119.99
For completists only! We always knew the folks at Motor Music were mad, but never this mad. Yet only beautiful madness could have led them to put out this insanely over-stuffed set of the complete works of one of the spookiest vocal groups of all time. Led by Gene Puerling of the Hi-Los, and recorded by the studio genius of MPS, the Singers Unlimited were a memorable group who managed to bring together jazz, easy listening, pop sounds, and even a bit of TV-jingle technique, in order to form a unique blend of harmony vocals that sounds like nothing else in the planet. Some of the stuff is cheesy, sure, but lots of it will blow your mind if you go in for the vocal group sound (as we do!) This set's got a massive 14 albums on 7 CDs, and it's packaged with a lavish booklet full of information, discographies, and essays on the band. We can't recommend this for everyone, but it's a stunning batch of material. And even though you do see some of their albums cheaply in the used record bins, this set contains a lot of stuff that you can never ever find. And as an additional bonus, the group is backed by folks like Clare Fischer, Art Van Damme, Oscar Peterson, Pat Williams, and others – and they also sing completely a cappella on 3 full albums! Wild. VariousGolden State Psychedelia ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
San Francisco is well-known as ground zero for the Summer Of Love – and the city gave us plenty of big bands that helped push the new sounds of the 60s firmly into the rock mainstream – but at the same time, the city also housed plenty of lesser-known acts and really experimental groups who were making some amazing sounds that never fully got their due! This set completely corrects that lack – by digging deep into the SF scene of the late 60s, and coming up with handfuls of fuzzy nuggets that show us that there's still plenty to discover from this ultra-rich moment in music – a time when there was so much greatness going down, even a collection like this only scratches the surface. And yet, that scratch is one hell of a treat – as the whole thing's filled with lots of unissued tracks from back in the day, rare singles, and lots more – all originally produced at Golden State Recorders, and documented here in some very well-done notes. Titles include "Blow Up" by The Goody Box, "Meditorium" by The Carnival, "Start Seeing" by The Short Yellow, "Sunday At The Lotus Parlor" by The Gants, "Chasing Rainbows" by The Bristol Boxkite, "Wet Chant" by The Immediate Family, "Daddy's Zoo" by The Tow Away Zone, "Black Diamonds" by Ticket Agents, "Speed" by Celestial Hysteria, "F*ck For Peace" by Magician, "Don't Worry Me" by The Seventh Dawn, and "My Kind Of People" by Just Slightly Richer. VariousVenezuela 70 Vol 2 – Cosmic Visions Of A Latin American Earth – Venezuelan Experimental Rock In The 70s & Beyond ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
Incredible sounds from a scene that most folks don't know at all – the heady music of Venezuela in the 70s, recorded at a time when the nation was bursting with new strengths and bright ideas! The work here is different than Brazilian, Columbian, or Peruvian sounds of the time – but like those scenes, the Venezuelan one was exploding with a huge wave of new creativity – embracing some styles from beyond its borders, but also working very hard to establish a local identity with all sorts of unusual instrumentation, production styles, and other hip elements! Despite the "rock" in the title here, much of the work is more in the wilder reaches of Latin-styled music – some heavily percussive, some with almost an electric soundtrack vibe, and quite a bit funky at more than a few points in the collection. As always with Soul Jazz, the whole thing is provided with a superb set of notes – so that you get as much history of the scene and the musicians as you do wonderful music – and titles include "La Sabana" by Vytas Brenner, "Dejando Volar El Pensamiento" by Daniel Grau, "Estoy Viviendo" by Fernando Yvosky, "Do It With Class" by Orchestra Julian, "Solos" by Grupo Bota, "Moliendo Cafe" by Aldemaro Romero Y Su Onda Nuevo, "Noches En Caracas" by Johnny Lamas, "Camino A Casa" by La Cuarta Calle, "Tragavenado" by Vytas Brenner, "Voy Caminando Feliz" by Daniel Grau, and "Un Dos Tres Y Fuera" by Machu Picchu Dos. Atlantic, 1972. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful album that perfectly mixes both sides of Aretha Franklin's talents – the hard-edged soul singer who first flourished at Atlantic records in the late 60s, and the artist who was growing even more as a vocalist – really reaching out her wings to more sophisticated material! There's a balance here that makes the record one of the deepest that Franklin ever recorded for Atlantic – lots of larger Arif Mardin touches, but also some raw moments that really round things out – on titles that include Aretha's classic take on the Weldon Irvine/Nina Simone tune "Young Gifted & Black", the funky classic "Rock Steady", the wonderful mellow groover "Day Dreaming", the hit "Brand New Me", and the strangely compelling "First Snow In Kokomo" – plus other titles that include "All The King's Horses", "Oh Me Oh My", "Border Song", "Didn't I Blow Your Mind", "April Fools", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "The Long & Winding Road". ✨✧ TemptationsCloud Nine ... CD
Motown, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece in psychedelic soul from The Temptations – perhaps the most perfectly realized album from their years working with Norman Whitfield! The set's awash in that bottom-heavy, rumbling funk mode that Whitfield brought to the group at the end of the 60s – served up in bold tracks that push the group's vocals to a whole new level, and which bring in a more righteous sound than anyone might have expected previously from Motown! The centerpiece here is the amazing "Runaway Child" – a really extended number that has all the political soul of a Curtis Mayfield tune – and other titles include "Cloud Nine", "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me", "Love Is A Hurtin Thing", "I Gotta Find A Way", "I Need Your Lovin", and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Hey, don't hold Wayne Cochran's hair against him – because he's one massively soulful dude, despite a high white pompadour – and really knew how to rock the clubs back in the 60s! Cochran's a really unique figure – working with a look that was whiter-than-white, but coming across with a groove that was right up there in the best funky soul mode of the time! Wayne played for the same sort of crowds that went to see Baby Huey & The Babysitters – blending together soul and R&B influences with a really party-oriented groove laid down by his legendary CC Riders backup group – and crossing countless borders along the way, all in pursuit of a socking soul sound! This wonderful set is the best we've ever seen on his music – and features tracks pulled from his sessions for King, Chess, and Mercury – plus a full never-issued live album for King, titled The Wayne Cochran Show. There's more than a few covers here of other 60s soul tunes, but Wayne somehow manages to make most of them sound even better than the originals – bringing in funky arrangements that weren't even used on the hits, and making us wish we'd had a chance to catch his cooking show back in the day. 38 tracks in all – with titles that include "Dance To The Music", "Hold On I'm Coming", "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Hard To Handle", "Chopper 70", "Everybody", "Let Me Come With You", "My Machine", "Get Ready", "Which One Should I Choose", "I'm In Trouble", "The Peak Of Love", "Somebody Please", "I'm Leaving It Up To You", and "Big City Woman". International Anthem, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of wonderful tunes – all written by the legendary southern soul team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham! The pair rarely entered the spotlight themselves, but contributed countless compositions that helped forge the sound of southern soul in the 60s – classic tunes that made the music of Memphis and Muscle Shoals even more mighty than anyone might have expected – thanks to a depth of feeling, sensitivity of emotion, and a trademark undercurrent of sadness that really helped the music set a new level at the time! This collection is the first to really do justice to the full range of the Penn/Oldham catalog – a beautiful batch of soul singles from a variety of different 60s labels – laid out back to back, in a breathtaking tapestry of soulful music. Titles include "Feed The Flame" by Ted Taylor, "Take Me" by Solomon Burke, "I'm Your Puppet" by Dionne Warwick, "Out Of Left Field" by Percy Sledge, "Cry Like A Baby" by Arthur Alexander, "It Tears Me Up" by Jeanne Newman, "I Met Her In Church" by Tony Borders, "I Need Someone" by The Wallace Brothers, "In The Same Old Way" by Arthur Conley, "Let It Happen" by James Carr, "Are You Never Coming Home" by Sandy Posey, and "I Worship The Ground You Walk On" by Etta James. Flamin GrooviesGonna Rock Tonight – The Complete Recordings 1969 to 1971 (Supersnazz/Flamingo/Teenage Head/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Kama Sutra/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $32.99
The birth of genius – the first three albums by Flamin Groovies, along with bonus tracks too! First up is Supersnazz – the first album from legendary San Francisco rockers the Flaming Groovies – and the cleaner horn-accented blueprint for the shakey, skronky structure to come! Supersnazz has a bit of a sibling in the first Stooges LP – in that the palatable production only hints at the insanity of later records – but it's a good rocking record all the same, a good site stranger, fierier and groovier than most of their contemporaries could muster! Tracks include "Love Have Mercy", "Laurie Did It", "Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu", "The First One's Free", "Pagan Rachel", "Pistol Packin' Mama", "Brushfire", "Around The Corner" and more. Flamingo is one of the finest moments ever from The Flamin Groovies – a set that's awash in 50s rock and roll influences, yet filtered through the heady late 60s San Francisco scene – making for a mix that's completely compelling throughout, and unlike anything else we can think of! The Groovies might initially seem like retro-rockers, yet they've got this sharp edge that makes their music more of a commentary on rock and roll, and its roots as well – uttered beautifully at a time when so many others were falling into excess, but also done without any of the "roots" cliches that others were embracing in a much clunkier way! It's hard to sum up adequately, but the record's almost a leap forward from Gene Vincent over 60s psyche – but on its way to the rough edges embraced by the UK punk scene in years to come – kind of that odd space that the Modern Lovers hit with their Kim Fowley recordings, but much more rocking overall. Most numbers are originals from vocalist Roy Loney – and titles include "Comin After Me", "Headin For The Texas Border", "Second Cousin", "Childhood's End", "Jailbait", and "She's Falling Apart". Teenage Head is maybe the best-remembered album ever from the all-great Flaming Groovies – and a set with a classic cover image that really lives up to the music! The Groovies have an unusual blend of old school rocking with hipper post-60s sensibilities – almost their own faux-retro sound to rival some of the west coast modes from the Warner scene – but with a grittier NYC presentation that's really wonderful, and which made the record a key force in the pre-punk years! One of those true treasures that just keeps on giving over the years – a record of subtle brilliance that just gets better and better with each new listen. Titles include "High Flyin Baby", "City Lights", "Yesterday's Numbers", "Whiskey Woman", and "Evil Hearted Ada". 3CD set features a whopping 17 bonus tracks – including "Louie Louie", "Shakin All Over", "Carol", "Scratch My Back", "Rumble", "Somethin Else", "Going Out (version 2)", "Walking The Dog", "The First One's Free (single)", "Around & Around", and "My Girl Josephine.
