✨✧ Mary Halvorsen & John DieterichTangle Of Stars ... CD
New Amsterdam, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two guitarists, coming together here in a mighty nice way – with sounds, tones, and colors that are completely fresh – and which really showcase the most creative styles of both musicians! We always look for Mary Halvorsen's name on a record, and this time around, the pairing with John Dieterich is especially great – with both musicians on guitars, and Dieterich on a bit of added drums and keyboards, but not much – so that the whole energy of the record comes from the shifting, changing textures of the electric strings and the way they interact. This isn't a completely free improvised set – as most tunes are relatively rhythmic, and most have some sort of a melodic impulse – but the execution is really unique, and there's a rich array of interesting moments in the record, which shifts in spirit on every different track. Titles include "Lace Cap", "Excerpt From Spatial Serenade", "My Mother's Lover", "The Handsome", "Short Knives", and "Balloon Cord". CD

✨✧ Caroline DavisAlula (with bonus download) ... LP
New Amsterdam, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really striking set from alto saxophonist Caroline Davis – working here in a trio format that's sometimes explosively rhythmic, other times more concerned with unusual sonic textures and tones! The group features drummer Gregory Saunier, and keyboardist Matt Mitchell – who plays Prophet 6, Modular, and Arp synthesizers – but all with a quality that really matches the acoustic elements in the set, especially in the change of energy that seems to come from the electric sources – shifting gears as quickly as the rhythms of Saunier, and bursting out with color to match some of Davis' freer flights on the alto! Most of the music is relatively structured, even with freer instrumental runs – and titles include "Remiges", "Alula", "Flight", "Wingbeat", "Coverts", "Vortex Generator", "Purrs", and "Landing". ✨✧ Brotzmann/Kondo/Pupillo/Nilssen-LoveHairy Bones ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Pretty hairy stuff from Peter Brotzmann and crew – a set that blasts right out of the gate with some really bone-rattling noise! The album's a live set, recorded recently in Amsterdam – featuring Brotzmann on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – alongside Toshinori Kondo on electric trumpet, Massimo Pupillo on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums. The electricity in the instruments can definitely be felt on the title track "Hairy Bones" – a hard-driving tune that runs for over 30 minutes, and which really recalls the energy that Brotzmann had a few decades before, when crossing over big to new audiences around the globe. "Chain Dogs" is even longer, but starts a bit slower – but then really bursts forth with more noisy elements on trumpet and bass – some really speaker-rattling stuff! CD

✨✧ Du-RitesSound Check At 6 ... LP
Redefinition, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just a sound check, as the Du-Rites play here live – at an undisclosed location in Brooklyn – in a set that's still got some vocals from J-Zone and Pablo Martin, but which also really seems to showcase the full funky action of the group as a quartet – with lots of heavy riffing on guitar and keyboards! The sound is maybe an imagined East LA take on the sound of The Meters – with all the chunky rhythms and bold instrumental elements of that New Orleans group, but some unusual production edges and slightly more exotic phrasing that really seems to move the groove. Titles include "Gamma Ray Funk", "The Man With The Golden Tooth", "Mr Porter", "Bug Juice", "The Chief & I", "Neckbones", "Pookie's Dead", and "Amsterdam Ave Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John CaleVintage Violence ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
The first solo album from John Cale – and a record that's about as different a statement as he could have made from his previous work in the Velvet Underground! There's an approach here in both the songwriting and instrumentation that's instantly Cale-like – sounds that have a knowledge of all the newer ideas that have been brewing up in the underground throughout the 60s – both in rock and more "serious" forms of art music – yet a way of putting over the tunes with undeniable charm, and which have Cale rising to the forefront as a surprisingly strong lead. A few steps further, and John might well have been a compelling crossover pop singer with a record like this – yet it's also his way of holding back that really makes things interesting – especially given all the different directions his career would take in the next few years – all hinted at here, but hidden in some surprisingly tuneful songs. Titles include "Ghost Story", "Amsterdam", "Charlemagne", "Hello There", "Gideon's Bible", "Adelaide", "Cleo", and "Big White Cloud". LP, Vinyl record album
(360 Sound stereo pressing. Cover has some surface wear, tracklist sticker with a lifted corner, and a small spot of white paint on back.)

Nelson RiddleRough Cut ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 1980. New Copy ... $14.99
A sweet Nelson Riddle soundtrack for a Burt Reynolds caper film – served up with a style that updates older Riddle modes for the 80s, but with a surprising current of jazz too! The jazzier modes are emphasized by a few older Ellington tunes in the mix – amidst newer Nelson tunes that move between playful melodies, and slinkier jazz numbers – often with the kind of instrumental phrasing that really made Riddle stand out from the pack when he was an arranger for singers, and which seem to have developed here at a level that picks up some of the better Henry Mancini modes of the 60s. The horns – both woodwinds and brass – are fantastic, really superb scoring and performance for the time – and titles include "He Waits", "Osthofen", "Rough Cut", "Something For Gil", "Disco Schmisko", "Chief Inspector Cyril Willis", "Bossa At The Mansion", and "Amsterdam Or Antwerp". CD features 37 tracks in all – including some bonus alternate takes! CD
