A Japanese book about Krautrock, but one that's laid out like a discography – so that you can understand it even if you can't read the language! All the artist and album information is in English (or German) – and every entry has a vivid full color photo, so that you can hundreds and hundreds of records that have gone onto make up the Krautrock genre as it's evolved over the years – following the music through key years of the 70s, and its evolution on the German scene as the 80s moved on – with slight side-trips into post-punk and industrial too. Chapters focus on artists or scenes – including Can, Kraftwerk, Neu, Hamburg, Faust, Die Krupps, Munchen, Embryo, Der Plan, Pyrolator, and lots more – dozens of other chapters that really lay out a wonderfully vivid picture of the music. A beautiful Brazilian album from the early 80s – one that has ties to some of the bigger world of MPB at the time, but which is much more obscure – given that Chico Lessa released the whole thing himself! The vibe is something in the territory of the corner club crowd that circled around Milton Nascimento – which is maybe no surprise, as Wagner Tiso handled some of the arrangements, and Marcio Borges helped write some of the songs – as did co-arranger Mauricio Maestro, who really helps to make the record sparkle! Like some of the best albums by Lo Borges, there's a wonderful balance going on here between tight production and open, honest presentation – so that the best studio touches never make things sound too slick or commercial, and instead really just amplify Chico's warm spirit at the core. Simple and elegant work from Japanese singer/guitarist Yoshiro Nakamura – a record as lovely as some of our favorites from Jobim, and handled with a very similar air! There's a wonderful understatement to the set – just vocals, guitar, and light percussion dancing around with a breezy feel, augmented by some occasional strings in the background. Writer Jon Savage is maybe best known for his work on the early years of punk in England – and here, Savage steps back just a bit – to contextualize the rise of the new music in all sorts of other styles that were bubbling up in the mid 70s! Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". A host of great guitarists, all coming together to pay tribute to one of their own – the mighty Pat Martino, an artist on the strings from his early years in the 60s in organ combos, through his very creative 70s material, into a great run of albums in later years too! Pat's memory is in great company here – on tunes that have a nicely lean vibe, and really allow for plenty of space for guitar solos – sometimes with two artists in the lineup, shifting their sound nicely – sometimes just a single player on the cut, depending on the tune! There's a power, righteousness, and urgency to this album that we haven't heard from Ackamoor in years – very much the kind of material that's both a message and a medicine for the planet – of the sort that first inspired Ackamoor's generation in the 70s – and which is rarely carried off in a contemporary context this well! Idris plays tenor, but also delivers some surprisingly wonderful vocals and a few very powerful spoken parts too – and the rest of the lineup features Margaux Simmons on flute, Bobby Cobb on guitar, Ruben Ramos Medina on bass, Jack Yglesies on percussion, Sandra Poindexter on viola and violin, and Giole Pagliaccia on drums. Really fantastic sounds from The Action – a set that maybe has them stepping a bit from mod to psych, but still with all the catchier elements of their earlier work! There's a very open-minded set of production going on here – a bit like the shift that Small Faces took with Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, but without the sillier sides of that record – and the simple lineup of guitar-based instrumentation somehow hits this richer sense of majesty – maybe a bit like The Hollies' shifting their sound at a similar point. Gritty live work from twin tenor giants Gene Ammons and Dexter Gordon – recorded in an open-ended style that's a bit like some of Gordon's famous early work on the Central Avenue scene in LA, or Ammons' famous live "battles" with Sonny Stitt! The date was recorded in Chicago at the North Park Hotel – with sound that's a bit more "live" than some of the other Prestige sessions at the time – and an unusual lineup that features local players Jodie Christian and John Young on piano, Cleveland Eaton on bass, and Steve McCall on drums. Louis Armstrong hits the Flying Dutchman label – and unlocks a whole new spiritual side of his talents – a mode that's quite different than some of his crossover pop of the 60s! The style here has a bit of righteous elements in the lyrics, and lots of spiritual jazz in the backings – with full arrangements from Oliver Nelson – who heads up a dream lineup that includes Billy Harper on tenor, and either Chico Hamilton or Pretty Purdie on drums! Even more amazing is a guest appearance from Leon Thomas – who sings on a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Other tunes are just as hip – and include "The Black Cat Has 9 Lives", "His Father Wore Long Hair", "Give Peace A Chance", and "We Shall Overcome". Must be heard to be believed! CD
