Dexter GordonKing Neptune – Dexter Gordon In Radioland Vol 3 ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1964. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Dexter Gordon soars on tenor in this great 1964 date with Tete Montoliu on piano, Benny Nielsen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and he also vocalizes a bit on a version of the Benny Green tune "I Want To Blow Now" – next to other tunes that include long takes on "Body & Soul", "Satin Doll", and "King Neptune". Dex also introduces the set with a bit of patter too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has unglued seams, tiny spot of spine wear, and a trace of a stain.)

SpiritualizedLadies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (180 gram neptune blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Plain/Arista, 1997. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 31.99
A surprisingly big breakthrough for Spiritualized – something we never would have guessed from the underground years of Spacemen 3 in the decade before! The set fuses that previous group's love of fuzz and space with a tighter sense of songwriting – that new psych blend of guitars and beats that was taking the British scene so strongly in the years after the emergence of Happy Mondays and other groups of their generation – carried forward strongly here by Spiritualized at a level that's maybe a bit hipper and more sonically interesting. All tracks are penned by leader J Spaceman – and titles include "Come Together", "Broken Heart", "No God Only Religion", "Cool Waves", "Cop Shoot Cop", "All Of My Thoughts", and "Electricity". LP, Vinyl record album
(Indie exclusive "neptune blue" pressing. Limited to 1000 copies – in a special cover which displays the "pill case" design of the original CD release.)

✨✧ Billy PaulEbony Woman (original Neptune pressing) ... LP
Neptune, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing early album from Billy Paul – the start of a rich career of sophisticated soul, and a record that really put Paul on the map right away – making him one of the most soulful interpreters of song in the 70s! There's a mix of modes going on here that's a bit similar to the early solo work of Isaac Hayes – a way of mixing mature styles from jazz, soul, and pop – into a blend that's all very much Billy's own, and which completely grabs you right from the start! The first track, "Ebony Woman", perfectly sums up Billy's style – one of those haunting tunes that never lets us down – and the album follows with a brilliant mix of tunes that includes nice groovers like "Everyday People" and "Psychedelic Sally" – plus the tracks "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "Windy", and "Let's Fall In Love All Over Again", all given a great soulful vibe and a very different twist! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light surface wear and some seam splitting.)

Prince JammyPrince Jammy Destroys The Invaders ... LP
Greensleeves (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99
This is sort of a Prince Jammy riff on the format of the popular Junjo Lawes-produced Scientist dub series. Nonetheless, he steps up to bat, and indeed defeats the evil planet munchers, with the able help of the Roots Radics rhytnm section. Recorded at Channel One and mixed at Tubby's – and how can you argue with that!? Fat, heavy rhythms dubbed into deep, deep outer space by the heir to the throne! 8 tracks in all, including "Conspiracy On Neptune", "Saturn Bombardment", "Attack on Ganymede", "Martian Encounter", "The Great Red Spot", "Life On Uranus", "Final Destruction" and "War In The Asteroid Belt". Sun RaDiscipline 27-II (with bonus track) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
One of Sun Ra's greatest albums of the 70s – recording during the same sessions that yielded the famous Space Is The Place record for Blue Thumb, and done with a very similar feel – an expansive configuration of the Arkestra in peak form! The range of expression is really incredible – from the spiritual soul jazz of "Pan Afro", to the lightly grooving June Tyson vocals of "Neptune", to the extended suite "Discipline 27-II", a stretched-out spacey number with vocal "dramatizing" by Ra, Tyson, Ruth Wright, and Judith Holton. That track's a particularly great one, with the kind of spiritual resonance behind the spacey approach that rarely comes through as strongly on other albums – but the whole set is wonderful, and judging how reminscient of it some of the best, similarly-minded underground jazz is decades later – the whole thing is an amazing testament to how strong Ra's influence is today. Reissued here on CD for the first time ever – with a bonus "Untitled Outtake". CD

✨✧ Sun RaIn The Orbit Of Ra ... CD
Strut (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
A really wonderfully-done collection of work from the legendary Sun Ra – put together by longtime musical partner Marshall Allen, and way way different than the typical mish-mash of tracks you'd find on some of the budget or public domain titles on the market! First off, the track selection is really thoughtful – music that definitely defines the Arkestra in the 60s and 70s, but which also highlights some of its overlooked corners too – pulled together from recordings that appeared on the Saturn, Impulse, and other labels – all curated and remastered by Art Yard, who've done their share of great Ra reissues over the years. Plus, the package features a few unreleased performances as well – and although it would serve as a great introduction to the music of Sun Ra, it's also really perfectly put together for longtime Ra fans as well – given the focus, track selection, and overall quality of the whole thing. The sounds are sublime – maybe one of the best summations of the righteous, cosmic genius of the Arkestra at its best – and titles include "Reflects Motion", "Island In The Sun (extended)", "Somewhere In Space", "The Lady With The Golden Stockings", "Somebody Else's World", "Ancient Aethiopia", "Astro Black", "Have You Heard The Latest News From Neptune", "We Travel The Spaceways", and "Plutonian Nights". 2CD version also includes the never-heard "Trying To Put The Blame On Me". ✨✧ Snoop DoggR & G (Rhythm & Gangsta) – The Masterpiece ... LP
Geffen/Doggy Style, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $13.99 34.99
Snoop brings Doggy Style over to Geffen – also the home to the Neptunes' Star Trak, Snoop's partners for this seriously strong later effort – also working with a diverse roster of producers and vocal guests including Alchemist, Lil Jon, 50 Cent, Hi Tek, and others. Snoops laidback rhyme style sounds really great on the Neptune productions, with that glittery minimalist electro sound and the digital handclaps that meld perfectly with Snoop's hazy delivery. The the now classic status of the standout single "Drop It Like It's Hot" is pretty much all the evidence you need, but Snoop's on a real high (artistically, that is) here, and mainstream street hop is all the better for it! Other tracks include "Bang Out", "Can I Get A Flicc Witchu" feat Bootsy Collins, "The Bidness", "Let's Get Blown", "Step Yo Game Up" with Lil Jon, "Oh No" with 50 Cent, "Pass It Pass It" and more. 22A (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A sweet mix of jazzy flute and other rhythms from Tenderlonious – a player who's definitely earned his chops as one of the key members of the London scene in recent years, but one who's also always willing to step out and try something new on solo projects of his own! This set has plenty of strong flute solos in the lead, but also goes for some more contemporary rhythms aimed at the clubs – a bit as if Tenderlonious were trying to turn out some sort of 21st century version of the mix of soul, funk, and jazz that Bobbi Humphrey did with Larry Mizell back in the day! Titles include "Journey To Thra", "Hold Tight", "Song For My Mother", "Isaac's Theme", "One For The Rhodes", "Neptune's Mood", and "Seti Khola". CD

✨✧ Billy HigginsSoweto ... CD
Red (Italy), 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderfully hip work from drummer Billy Higgins – a crucial session from the end of the 70s, and one that shows just how far he'd come since the decade before! Higgins has always been great, but here he works in the company of some key Eastern Rebellion musicians – Bob Berg on tenor and Cedar Walton on piano, who lineup with bassist Tony Dumas in a wonderfully deep-voiced quartet! The rhythms and approaches are a bit different than on the Higgins sessions with Eastern Rebellion – especially on the album's title track, which features some very unusual spiritual work on percussion – and the album's closing track, which showcases some work by Higgins on guitar. In between, the album's got a solid swing that really rounds things out wonderfully – and titles include "Back To Bologna", "Bahia Bahia Bahia", "Neptune", and "Soweto". CD

Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest new groups we've heard on Daptone in a long time – an instrumental combo that's definitely funky, but which has some of the exotic touches you might expect from their name! There's a nice current of strings that slide in alongside more familiar funk instrumentation – some violins, cellos, and even a harp – used to give the groove this expansive vibe that's partly blacksploitation soundtrack, but much more than that as well! Both Leon Michels and Neal Sugarman are in the group on tenor sax – but the real brainchild here seems to be Toby Panzer, who produced and arranged, and who plays a range of sublime sounds on organ, clavinet, harpsichord, vibes, and percussion! Titles include "Sirens Of Jupiter", "Saturn", "Pluto's Lament", "Mercury's Odyssey", "Europa & The Bull", "Sagittarius By Moonlight", "Neptune", "Mars", and "Diana By My Side". LP, Vinyl record album

The fourth full length set from NERD, and one that really shows the group at the top of their mainstream game – maybe more in the territory of catchy soul than before, and definitely heading in the direction that Pharrell would take in his solo work to come! There's a bit of hip hop in the mix, but the production is bumpingly upbeat, for tunes that are unabashedly hook-heavy – served up with help from Nelly Furtado and TI, on cuts that include "Party People", "Hypnotize U", "Help Me", "God Bless Us All", "Sacred Temple", "Wanna Jam", "The Man", "Hot N Fun", "Life As A Fish", "Nothing On You", "Victory", and "Perfect Defect". At the time of this album's original release, the Neptunes had yet to take over the world, so it barely saw the light of day. Combining Chad & Pharrel's tight beats and infectious ghettofied songcraft with Kelis' sweet vocals, we can't really tell what the folks at the label were thinking, as this album's got both mainstream appeal and underground authenticity. 14 tracks in all, including "Good Stuff", 'Get Along WithYou", "Game Show", 'Suspended", "Ghetto Children", "I Want Your Love", "In The Morning" and "Wouldn't You Agree". Snoop DoggPaid Tha Cost To Be Da Bo$$ ... LP
Priority, 2002. Near Mint- 3LP Gatefold ... $39.99
Snoop's back, with guest spots and production by the Neptunes, Premier, Jay Z, Redman, Nate Dogg and others, and it's a real guilty pleasure. Snoop is Snoop, there's nothing fresh at all here, but whether you like the pooch or not, this without a doubt his tightest batch since Doggystyle. It's too damn long – stretched over 3 LPs, there's some definate quality hemorrhaging here and there – but the top tier producers bring their best games, and Snoop sounds like he cares for a change. He even looks alive these days – that house party live version of "From The Chuuuch To Da Palace" Snoop does with a funk band on Doggy Fizzle Televizzle (the equally great LP version you'll find here is produced by the Neptunes) really is fresh, and it burns, too. Other tracks include "Don Doggy", "Stoplight", "Da Bo$$ Would Like To See You", ""I Believe In You", "Lollipop", ""Beautiful", "Paper'd Up", "Bo$$ Playa", "I Miss That Bitch", ""From Long Beach 2 Brick City", and "Batman & Robin." 20 tracks on 3 LPs; a near masterpiece and we didn't even see it coming. VariousCatacombs – Temple Street, Wolverhampton 1968 to 1974 – The Original Sound Of Northern Soul, Popcorn & R&B ... CD
Charly (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $9.99 13.98
Sublime 60s soul singles – upbeat, grooving, and brought together in support of legendary UK club The Catacombs – an early hotbed for the Northern Soul scene! The package is heavy on notes and images from the club – but even if you've never set foot in the UK, or on a dancefloor, you'll still find plenty here to love – a searing batch of 28 gems from the late 60s – most of them pretty darn rare, and usually with an edge that's a lot rawer than mainstream work of the time! The Catacombs seemed to pick the cuts that still held onto some of the sharper qualities of the earliest years of soul – less smooth groovers and more gritty tracks that really make this batch stand out. Titles include "Try A Little Harder" by The Fi-Dels, "What Is This" by Bobby Womack, "Suffering City" by Johnny & Lilly, "Psychedelic Soul" by Saxie Russell, "Do Me Like You Do Me" by John Williams & The Tick Tocks, "The Wrong Girl" by The Showmen, "Every Beat Of My Heart" by The Du-Ettes, "Michael" by The CODs, "Chinatown" by Victor Knight, "House Of Heartaches" by The Neptunes, "Love Time" by Kelly Brothers, "I've Got To Have Your Love" by Mill Evans, "The Touch Of Venus" by Sandy Wynns, "If You Ask Me" by Jerry Williams, and "Nothing Worse Than Being Alone" by The Ad Libs. ✨✧ ClipseLord Willin' ... LP
Star Trak/Arista, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A neo-electro/drug rap/crossover hip hop classic produced by the Neptunes, and the debut LP on their own Star Trak label. Malice and Pusha T are smooth, confident rhymers with some stand-out moments, but the Neptunes are driving this train, much in the way Prince Paul commandeered early De La Soul productions. Like Paul, The Neptunes' fingerprints are evident on just about every second of every track, but it doesn't diminish the role of the rappers in the least. This is a true hip hop record from beginning to end, something the 'Tunes had shied away from around the same time with the hard rockin' NERD. Their production style saturated pop music at the time, but this may be the Neptunes first album-length masterpiece. Tracks include "Young Boy", "Ma, I Don't Love Her" featuring Faith Evans, "Ego", "Comedy Central" featuring Fabulous, "Gangsta Lean", "Let's Talk About It" featuring Jermaine Dupri, and more. Includes exclusive "Grindin'" remixes. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CommonElectric Circus ... CD
MCA, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Common newcomers who buy Electric Circus for the single with Mary J Blige are going to be left with some head scratching – but if you like the spiritual/psychedelic Com that was hinted at on Like Water For Chocolate, this may be the follow up you were waiting for! This is still hip hop – with production by the Neptunes, Jay Dee, ?uestlove and others, but it's definitely a boundary stretcher. The mood runs from Roots style soul bumpers to Hendrix and Eugene McDaniels style feedback heavy freakouts. There's a guest on nearly every track, mostly from the Okayplayer camp and NuSoul titans, including Bilal, Omar, Pharrell Williams, Cee-Lo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab and others. We won't lie to you, we miss the Chicago hip hop Common that kicked insight over raw and soulful productions, but you can't fault the guy for being an artist, and he really has crafted something original here. A great cover – a kind of rainbow drenched cut and paste photo collage of the contributors and inspirations with Com out front, sort of reminding us of Tribe's Midnight Maurauders, and even Sgt. Pepper. Tracks include "Ferris Wheel", "Soul Power", "The Hustle", the first single "Come Close", "New Wave", "Star *69", "Jimi Was A Rock Star" and more. CD

✨✧ Jay-ZBlack Album ... LP
Roc-A-Fella, 2003. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
"This here is the victory lap," raps Hov midway through The Black Album, his supposed career-capper (for this stage, anyway), and if nothing here immediately dazzles us to the core the way the best of his past singles have done, overall this is probably the most consistent front-to-back listen of all his albums. One of the nicest things about the Black Album is the brevity. As tight as the best of his recent output has been over the last couple of years – from singles, to album tracks, to guest spots – Jay-Z's simply been TOO productive, which has diluted the overall power of his presence. That issue is addressed right off the bat here – with a very manageable 14 tracks, no guest rhymers, and a consistent overall sound and mood thanks in part to strong production by Kanye West, 9th Wonder, Neptunes, Timbaland, Eminem (who's baroque synth productions are getting dangerously close to going stale, but it fits Jay-Z's dramatic finale theme very well), Rick Rubin and DJ Quik. It's a wildly disparate cast behind the boards, but this thing flows incredibly well thanks to Jay-Z's predetermined mission to make a great album, not just a hot record. We may still have to lean towards Blueprint as his late masterpiece, but this is way up there. "December 4th", "What More Can I Say?", "Encore", "Change Clothes", "Dirt Off Your Shoulder", "Threat", "Moment Of Clarity", "99 Problems", "Justify My Thug", "Lucifer", "Allure", "My First Song", and a couple of brief interludes.
