Nelson GeorgeHippest Trip In America – Soul Train & The Evolution Of Culture & Style (hardcover) ... Book
William Morrow, 2014. New Copy ... $4.99 27.99
The story of Soul Train, brought to us by an author we trust more than most when it comes to music writing! Nelson George has already given us great books on Motown, hip hop, James Brown, and the decline of rhythm and blues – and he does an equally great job here with his examination of Soul Train – mixing rich details from the show's long history, with his own interpretation of its role in American culture, and its lasting impact upon both TV, and the representation of African-American music in the mainstream. The book is hardcover, 236 pages, and includes some black and white images. Book

Oliver NelsonZigzag – Original Soundtrack ... LP
MGM, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A really standout score from Oliver Nelson – a set that's got some of his groovier touches at times, but also features some pretty great straighter scoring as well! The record really shows Nelson stepping out from his older role as a strictly jazz-based arranger – and although there are some jazz touches here, there's also some even more impressive larger orchestrations that soar out with a majestic use of strings. George Kennedy (remember that stretch when it seemed he was in every movie?) – and although half the album's straight soundtrack material, there's some groovy tracks that make it worthwhile. Roy Orbison sings a vocal number called "Zigzag" – but the real charmers are the jazzier themes, which include "The Other Car", "Love Theme", "Earphones", and the great "Variation Of Themes", which has a wonderfully dancing bossa groove to it! ✨✧ Miles DavisTutu ... CD
Warner, 1986. Used ... $3.99
A nice collaboration between Miles and Marcus Miller from the latter part of Miles career. As much of the recording here is overdubbed, with many multiple instruments played by Miller, it doesn't have the improvised vibe of Miles' classic performances, but the songwriting and arrangements are head and shoulders above much of the contemporary jazz being recorded at the time, Miles is in great form, and the glossy production sits better with us now than ever before. Paulinho DaCosta, George Duke, Michael Urbaniak and Bernard Wright all make guest appearances. 8 tracks in all: "Tutu", "Tomaas", "Portia", "Splatch", "Backyard Ritual", "Perfect Way", Don't Lose Your Mind" and "Full Nelson". ✨✧ Billie & De De Pierce/Jim Robinson's New Orleans BJazz At Preservation Hall 2 ... LP
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Some of the best-recorded work to ever come from the Preservation Hall scene in New Orleans – one of Atlantic Records' great 60s albums of material from the legendary venue! Side one features a small combo led by trombonist Jim Robinson – a group with a great gutbuckety groove, thanks to banjo, bass, and drums on the rhythms – and graces with some especially nice clarinet by Louis Cottrell in the lead with Jim. Titles include "Gettysburg March", "You Tell Me Your Dream", and "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It". Side two features the classic group of trumpeter Joseph De De Pierce and pianist Billie Pierce – in a lineup that has George Lewis on clarinet and Louis Nelson on trombone. Titles include "Shine", "San", "Ciribiribin", and "Shake It & Break It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue & green label stereo pressing.)
