Fantastic work from Neil Swaison – a great bassist, and a leader who doesn't always get to record with his name on the marquee – although when he does, he always gives us a fantastic record like this! The record's got this sense of tone and color that's wonderful – served up by a really well-chosen sextet of players that includes Steve Davis on trombone, Renee Rosnes on piano, Kelly Jefferson on tenor and soprano, Brad Turner on trumpet, and Quincy Davis on drums – players who do a marvelous job of interpreting the original material on the album – all new tunes penned by Swainson, who's as great a writer as he is a leader. Titles include "Under Cover Of Darkness", "Jerry's Blues", "Madrona", "Lagrange Point", "At The End Of The Day", "In The Path Of Angels", and "Bend". CD
Bassist NeilSwainson almost never gives us a record as a leader, but when he does, it's usually something special – which is definitely the case on this well-crafted set! Swainson's kind of a secret talent – a great player in his own right, an excellent composer, and one of those leaders who really seems to pull something extra out of the players in his group – as you'll hear here in the quintet session with Rene Rosnes on piano, Lewis Nash on drums, Brad Turner on trumpet, and Kelly Jefferson on tenor! Both Turner and Jefferson aren't as well-known as the rhythm players, but they do a fantastic job of illuminating Swainson's set of all-original material – tracks that really set things up for the horn solos as they take off. Titles include "Late Afternoon", "Fell Among Thieves", "Standing Back", "Cascades", "Fools Gold", "Kyushu", and "Silver Mine". CD

With George McFetridge on piano, NeilSwainson on bass, and Greg Pilo on drums. LP, Vinyl record album
A set that's a real surprise from UK trumpet legend Humphrey Lyttleton – in part because it was recorded in Canada, late in his career – but also in part because it features players not always associated with the trad jazz that Humph usually played – which changes things up nicely! The great Ed Bickert is in the group on guitar, playing with that wonderful sense of color we love on his own records – and Jim Galloway provides reed solos on soprano, baritone, and clarinet – next to NeilSwainson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums. Lyttleton also blows a bit of clarinet at times – and titles include "Lady Jekyll & Mistress Hyde", "Caribana Queen", "Squiggles", "It's A Thing", and "Sprauncy". CD
Tenorist Ryan Oliver really sounds great here – stretching out on long, live tracks that provide a perfect showcase for his well-phrased lines and soulful solos! We'll be honest in saying that we maybe never gave Ryan such strong props before this set – but the album's one of those live outings that maybe have the leader sparkling even more than in another setting – a bold leader who really brings a lot out of the group, and a soloist who never falters for imagination when given the space to really open up! The set features a core group with Brian Dickson on piano, Terry Clarke on drums, and NeilSwainson on some especially great bass – he can really be a secret hero on sets like this – and Dee Daniels comes in an sings on two of the album's tracks as well. Titles include "Lonnie's Lament", "Equinox", "Wayfaring Stranger", "Peaceful Warrior", "Corcovado", "Canyon", and "Tryin Times". CD features the bonus track "Mahjong". CD
