Slum VillageFantastic Vol 1 ... LP
Long Player/Ne'Astra, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the 2LP version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. Slum VillageFantastic Vol 2 (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Ne'Astra, 2000. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
One of the most influential albums of recent hip hop history! Fantastic wasn't considered a masterpiece upon its long-delayed original release, it needed some time to sink in, but we all now know there is no denying the genius of Jay Dee's production and T3 and Baatin at the top of their games. Lots of straight soul, deep funk, and mellowed out jazzy touches that became a staple in underground soul and hip hop, influencing everyone from ?uestlove and the Roots to D'Angelo, Jill Scott, Macy Gray, and others. In addition to the core Slum crew the record features D'Angelo, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and Jazzy Jeff! Tracks include "Conant Gardens, "I Don't Know", "Jealously", "Fall In Love", "Get Dis Money", "Once Upon A Time", "Go Ladies", and more. Slum Village & Abstract OrchestraFantastic 2020 (2CD set) ... CD
Ne'Astra, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
Slum Village teams up with the hip hop-reared jazz funk collective Abstract Orchestra for this worthy revisit/live band rework of the legendary Fantastic Vol 2 – a soulful Detroit hip hop classic and a vital piece of the late great J Dilla's legacy! A few cuts have prominent vocals, others have atmospheric backing vocals, but it's Abstract Orchestra's jazzy hip hop soul instrumentals – taking flight on the inspiration of the Jay Dee & Slum Village Detroit hip hop classic – that serve as the driving soulful spirit of this one. They are indeed a sizable crew more than earning the orchestra part of their name, but they know how to keep the core groove in a tight, headnodding mode befitting late 90s soulful hip hop, while finding space to soar within. It's also a testament to Dilla's original production that it makes so much sense fleshed out with horns, strings and more orchestral atmosphere. Titles including "Hold Tight", "Tell Me", "Jealousy", "Thelonius", "Who We Are", "Players", "What's It All About", "Forth & Back", "CB4:, "Once Upon A Time", "Untitled", "Eyes Up" and more. 21 tracks on 2CDs. ✨✧ Van MorrisonAstral Weeks ... LP
Warner, 1968. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Van's debut album for Warner Brothers and a pretty radical departure from anything he'd done before – breaking all kinds of new ground for his own most creative work and helping pave the way for all kinds of hauntingly poetic rock, folk rock, and singer-songwriter records to come! It doesn't take more than a few seconds of opening title track, with Morrison's rawly passionate voice and spiritually yearning lyrics, to know this is a pretty remarkable creative leap from pop leaning sound of "Brown Eyed Girl" and other preceding efforts – , and it gets even more far out from there both lyrically and instrumentally! It's almost folk jazz, arrangements wise, with flute and largely acoustic instrumentation, a really spontaneous feel to the sessions, and always hypnotic, seemingly stream of consciousness vocals by Van. As loose and spacious as the sound is, the emotional resonance is pretty heavy, and sequenced as a cycle: part one In The Beginning on side 1 and part two Afterwards on side 2. A stunner! Titles include "Astral Weeks", "Beside You", "Cyprus Avenue", "Sweet Thing", "Slim Slow Slider", and "Madame George". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joey PastranaJoey (remastered edition) ... CD
Cotique/Fania, Late 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Brilliant early work by one of the sharpest bandleaders of the Latin Soul era! A young Joey Pastrana leads his sharp little combo through a stunning mix of Latin jazz, Latin soul, and descarga tracks – all with the kind of hard playing, jazzy grooves, and dark edges that characterized a lot of the best late 60s albums on Cotique. There's a nascent salsa groove on here that bubbles forth amidst some more stripped down Latin soul numbers – making for a really winning album overall, one that's got loads and loads of solid tunes! Tracks include "That's How Rumors Start", "Yehco De Rumbon", "Ricki Chi", "Orquesta Pastrana", "King Of Latin Soul", "Dance Donna", and "Cotique All Stars". Great stuff by one of the most-overlooked talents of the late 60s! CD

Charles Rumback/Jim Baker/John TateJune Holiday (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
A sublime trio set from drummer Charles Rumback – a record that has us really appreciating the special touch the leader can bring to a date, as this album may also be one of the best that we've heard from pianist Jim Baker in years! Baker has this great way of sounding soulful and lyrical, yet also moving towards the freer side of his spectrum too – working with the subtle drums of Rumback and the careful bass of John Tate, all with energy that almost takes us back to the groundbreaking Three Waves album by Steve Kuhn – one of our favorite piano dates of all time, which is a hell of a compliment to Baker! The album has an open feel, but one that's also very careful too – not the spaciousness of an ECM record, and instead more intense, but in a very understated way. Brilliant throughout – with titles that include "Here & Now", "Hard Goodbye", "Foglights", "Burning Daylight", "Huh", and "Portrait Of Lorena". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Burton Greene/Damon Smith/Ra Kalam Bob MosesLife's Intense Mystery ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from pianist Burton Greene – a modernist who's been quietly continuing a great legacy of creative music he started in the 60s – still sounding distinct and full of imagination in this well-recorded recent trio performance! The set has Greene working with Damon Smith on bass and Ra Kalam Bob Moses on drums and percussion – both musicians whose overall sense of sound matches the wideness of Burton's scope – which makes the whole thing way way different than any familiar sort of trio recording! Instead, the balance swings easily between each of the three points on the triangle, but with different moments of force that keep things very lively, and very compelling – on titles that include the three part title track "Life's Intense Mystery", plus "Anything That Ain't Yes Get Rid Of It", "Kid Play", and "Perc Waves". ✨✧ Joe Henderson with Alice ColtraneElements (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Milestone/Concord, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Joe Henderson albums of the 70s – a suite of tracks dedicated to the four elements – and served up with some great accompaniment from Alice Coltrane! The style here is a wonderful mix of Coltrane's spirituality and Henderson's down-to-earth soulfulness – in a style that recalls some of the best moments on Coltrane's sublime Ptah The El Daoud album – a set in which Henderson's tenor was a key part. At times, Joe blows with a bit of Coltrane-like searching – but at others, he's bringing up more of a rhythmic pulse that really gives Alice a great focus – using her piano, harp, and harmonium alongside bass by Charlie Haden, violin from Michael White, and percussion from Ndugu Chancler and Baba Daru Oshu. Titles are named after the four elements – "Fire", "Air", "Water", and "Earth". LP, Vinyl record album

There's even a very cool feature on Detroit Gospel Flyers – and as usual, the whole thing is as filled with compelling images as it is well-written prose! Magazine

✨✧ Joey PastranaSalsa Inferno ... CD
Salsa International, Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure post-Cotique album from the great Joey Pastrana – one that shows an even stronger groove than his last years at his former label! The set was produced by Larry Harlow, and it's got a depth that's really wonderful – a complex approach to the arrangements on many numbers, and a wider-ranging sound than we might have expected from Joey a few years before – clearly part of the global Latin focus that he and other New York artists were picking up on during the 70s. The horn parts are especially great – really soaring out with a sense of warm on most numbers – and arrangements are by Mauricio Smith, Sonny Bravo, and Marty Sheller. The record's also got some great 70s Latin Soul numbers – like the saxophone-heavy "Dance Donna Dance", and the soulful "Tight & Loose" – plus the more club-sounding title "Until The Real Thing". Other tracks include "Gonna Cry", "Chico East", "Pensamiento", and "Monte Pastrana". CD

✨✧ Ken Vandermark's Topology Nonet feat Joe McPheeImpressions Of Po Music ... CD
Okka Disk, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ken Vandermark works here in musical modes first proposed by Joe McPhee – his famous concept of Po Music – performed here by a group that also features Joe, and a whole host of great players from the Chicago scene! Vandermark and McPhee have influenced each other a lot in the past few decades – but the approach here is to return to Joe's early Hat Art use of the Po concept – especially the way it presents ideas as provocation – which are then turned into improvisational fire by a group that includes Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Berman on cornet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, Dave Rempis on saxes, Tim Daisy on drums, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics. Both Vandermark and McPhee play tenor – and the music has an intensity that's amazing for such a large group of improvisers – further proof that all players are very well-matched. Titles include "Impressions Of Eroc Tinu", "Impressions Of Knox", "Impressions Of Astral Spirits/Age", and "Impressions Of Sweet Dragon". CD

Plastic (Italy), Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best releases on Plastic in a long time, and a great compilation of funky Italian 70s tracks – with a sound that's similar to the Cabildo's albums we've been selling like mad! The sound is nice and funky, with lots of electric piano lines, wah wah guitars, tight snapping drums, and a nice overall 70's jazz funk groove. There's little or no crossover with some of the other compilations of this sort of stuff, and the sound is the sort that got us excited about rare Italian stuff in the first place. Includes a number of cuts by R. Ducros, plus others by M. Molino, L. Zito, G. Sorgini, and F. Tamponi (for some reason, the notes don't list their first names!) Art Hirahara is a beautifully fluid pianist – one who really won us over with his last album on Posi-tone, and who seems to soar even more here – working in a fantastic trio that includes Linda Oh on bass and Rudy Royston on drums – plus some occasional tenor from Donny McCaslin! Oh and Royston have this round presence that really resonates strongly with Art's piano – creating this wave of soulful energy from the ground up, even on the mellower moments – with a tonal depth that's sophisticated, yet never forced at all. When McCaslin comes into the mix, his sound is a bit more separate from the three – yet in a way that only underscores their cohesion and beautiful sensitivity together. Titles include "Little Giant", "Sensitive Animal", "Central Line", "Kuroda Bushi", "Astray", and a version of the Chico Buarque tune "As Minhas Meninas". CD

Carol Pansei delivers a heck of a lot in the space of a small combo album – work on piano, violin, and flugelhorn – plus these really lovely wordless vocals that dip, turn, and glimmer around the tunes – almost in a legacy of Brazilian jazz that goes back to Flora Purim! The setting is a small combo one – just guitar, bass, and drums added to Carol's overdubbed performances – and the album has this very natural, organic flow – one that really takes us back to some of our favorite Brazilian jazz efforts from years back, particularly some of the 80s gems on the Pointer and Som Da Gente labels. Titles include "Irmandade Da Luz", "Cordao Astral", "Flor Da Vida", "Transmutacao Violeta", "Afeto", "Somos Todos Um", and "Luz De Estrela E Diamante". CD

Patrick Shiroishi and Vinny Golia handle the reeds, and Dylan Fujioka and Alex Cline are on drums and percussion – and the album's two extended, improvised tracks have this great sense of space and sympathy – as the musicians are really starting to feel each other out at the start, then find ways to unfurl stronger, bolder aspects of their performance – yet with distinct sonic elements that really keep the individuality of each member. Capitol/ESC (Germany), 1974. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A jazz fusion classic from Atmospheres – a hip group led by reedman Clive Stevens, and which also features some usually-mellower players really taking off together! Stevens blows a great range of horns – electric and acoustic tenor, sopranos sax, and often a wah-wah pedal to inflect the notes coming out of his electric horn – a bit like John Klemmer in some of his early electric moments! This quality is emphasized nicely by the guitars of Steve Khan and John Abercrombie, and the electric piano and ring modulator of Ralph Towner – players who really know how to keep the right sort of space between the notes, which makes for a few funky moments – especially with core rhythms from Rick Laird on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Harry Wilkinson on percussion. If you were to tell the unaware listener that the set featured trumpet, bass, and drums – there's many points in which the ears might not agree – and that's a great testament to the way these three come together with amazing energy – especially given that the whole thing was recorded live, in one long take. One of the most fantastic collections we've ever heard from DJ Amir – a set that may well blow away his classic On/Off Track sets for the depth of its spirit and feeling! Amir's been well-known as a crate digger for many years – and while digging for funk, soul, and hip hop on the New York scene, he's also come across plenty of rare Latin nuggets – not familiar salsa or crossover Latin Soul, but instead some much deeper numbers that show just how much spirit and imagination the music had when it was at its best! Most of the numbers here are from late 60s and 70s vintage – and many have this jazzy energy that goes way past just simple grooves, and which instead features the richer colors and complicated motions of some of Eddie Palmieri's music, especially in the 70s. Titles include the previously unreleased "Salsa (parts 1 & 2)" by Fito Foster – plus "Picadillo" by La Moderna Of New York, "Bomba" by Dax Pacem, "Paranoia" by Wayne Gorbea Y Su Conjunto Salsa, "Rogelio Tiene La Salsa" by Chino Y Su Conjunto Melao, "Yo No Bailo Con Juana" by Cortijo Y Kako, "Vete De Aqui" by Joey Aponte, "Asi Asi Descarga" by Mike Hernandez Y Su Sonora Casino, "Tembelque" by Louie Colon, "El Ritmo Soledad" by Orchestra Soledad, and "El Pulpo" by Joey Pastrana. Funky soul, righteous jazz, and hip production made the Flying Dutchman label one of the greatest imprints of the early 70s! The label was the brainchild of producer Bob Thiele, and was a post-60s project to bring together unheard voices in African American culture – recording heavily in a number of genres that included jazz, funk, soul, and Latin – cutting records that were destined to become instant classics, most of which are still pretty darn influential today! This set does a great job of starting to unpack the wealth of work on Flying Dutchman – bringing together tracks by a few familiar acts, and other lesser-known artists, a few who have rarely been reissued. Titles include "Carnavalito" and "Maria Domingas" by Gato Barbieri, "Mama" and "Chains Of Love" by Esther Marrow", "Baja Bossa" by Oliver Nelson, "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" by Pretty Purdie, "Save The Children" and "I Think I'll Call It Morning" by Gil Scott Heron, "The Creator Has A Master Plan" by Louis Armstrong & Leon Thomas, "Echoes" by Leon Thomas, and "Footprints" and "Astral Travelin" by Lonnie Liston Smith. A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Polydor (UK), 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The final album in Brian Eno's initial burst of genius in the 70s – and the last of those records to feature real rock songs, with vocals and lyrics! Eno steps off even further here from the territory he first explored on Another Green World – referencing some of his more private sonic experiments, but also still keeping things in a relatively tuneful mode – yet also somewhat personal, too – maybe a bit like Robert Wyatt at his early solo best. The record features contributions from some of his hipper contemporaries – Phil Manzanera and Robert Fripp on guitars, Fred Frith on "cascade guitars", Jaki Liebezeit and Phil Collins on drums (back when Phil was still hip!) – and more familiar musical partners Percy Jones on bass and Rhett Davies as the engineer. The whole album's brilliantly laid out – from fierceness to ambience, and back again – on titles that include "No One Receiving", "Kurt's Rejoinder", "King Lead Hat", "Spider & I", "Engery Fools The Magician", "Backwater", and "Here He Comes". Slow Things, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Mekons return to their roots – and rework the sound of their initial year of 1977 – a gritty, raw take on early UK punk modes – the sound that was strongly associated with their scene in Leeds, and very different than the more roots-inspired styles that have become better known from the group through their years in the US! The group's actually a re-formed version of the Mekons circa 1977 – hence their billing on the title – but the tunes are all new, and resonate strongly with the directions the group were taking on their first few records – proof that Jon Langford hasn't let himself get too led astray by his years in Chicago. Maybe the best album we've ever heard from Dining Rooms – a set that has the group moving way past just makers of seductive grooves, into wider, fuller territory that definitely puts them at the top shelf level we love from the best at Schema Records! The album balances some of their earlier modes with really strong songs that feature a variety of different singers – including Sean Martin, Beatrice Velasco Moreno, and Georgeanne Kalweit – who each give the record a lot more lyrical power than before, and a strong presence on the vocal tracks that makes instrumental moments feel like well-placed interludes. A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to comeout in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all fell just right, and the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. ✨✧ Mick RonsonOnly After Dark – The Complete Mainman Recordings (Slaughter On 10th Avenue/Play Don't Worry/1976 sessions/rarities) (4CD set) ... CD
RCA/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Ziggy Stardust guitar genius Mick Ronson issued a pair of 70s albums on the David Bowie Mainman imprint for RCA – and both of those records are included here, plus a huge amount of never-issued tracks and bonus material too! First up is Slaughter On 10th Avenue – Mick Ronson's first and probably best solo album – an adventurous set of glam pop that's both weird and catchy, naturally featuring some fantastic guitar pyrotechnics. Fascinatingly, Ronson starts the record with a crooning cover of "Love Me Tender", with his recognizable riffs kicking in a bit after his plaintive vocals – but it's that kind of anything goes weirdness that makes the album loads of fun, kind of closer to Queen style pomp than Bowie's astral trailblazing. Titles include "Growing Up & I'm Fine", "Music Is Lethal", I'm The One" and the Richard Rodgers penned title tune. Next is Play Don't Worry – catchy glam pop from guitarist Mick Ronson – the blazing player best remembered for his work with Bowie, here blending punchy riffs and heavier sounds with bubbly hooks and playful production touches. Our favorite tunes showcase the heavy guitar fuzz, but the oddball cutesy songs are endearing in their strange way. Ronson kind of throws a bunch of stuff at the wall here, and the stuff that sticks gets you nodding your head and smiling at the more innocuous touches. Titles include "Billy Porter", "This Is For You", a weird, piano peppered cover of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat", "Empty Bed", "This Is For You", "Woman" and more. Both albums come with bonus tracks that include live tracks and rare demos, plus some outtakes and an interview too. CD3 features rare 1976 sessions – with titles that include "Hard Life", "Takin A Train", "I'd Give Anything To See You", "Hard Headed Woman", "Roll Like The River", "Angel No 9", and "Junkie For Your Love". CD4 features more rarities – tracks that include demo and live takes of material on CD3 – the live material of which was recorded in Buffalo in 1976. 60 tracks in all – and a nice booklet of notes! Classic spiritual soul jazz from Pharoah – recorded with an all star lineup that includes Lonnie Liston Smith, Cecil McBee, Roy Haynes, and Michael White. The album's got a strong influence from the members on the set – particularly Lonnie Liston Smith, who seems to bring in a very nicely soulful approach to a few of the numbers, and Michael White, whose spiritual consciousness is still a bit rough-hewn and personal at this point. The record oddly shifts mood from track to track – going from the mellow soul of "Astral Traveling", into the loud free jazz of "Red Black & Green", to the modal grooving of "Thembi", and into the spiritual joy of "Love" and "Bailophone Dance" – all of which makes for a really wonderful album, one of Pharoah's strongest statements of the time! Bridge Sessions (France), 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful mix of jazz improvisation and spoken word passages – done at a level that almost takes us back to the most righteous experiments of the 70s! The album's got a unique lineup – spoken passages from Mankwe MN Ndosi, improvised poetry from Mike Ladd, drums and cymbals from Dana Hall, and both clarinets and electronics from Sylvain Kassap – a sonic melange that's even more amazing on record than it might read on paper! The use of voice is especially great – often interwoven in great ways with the percussion and electronics, and never overwhelmed by those elements at all – with a sense of integration that's way different than just a spoken word passage attached to an avant jazz performance. There's some very special energy going on here – enough to make even the improvised lyrics sound great – on titles that include "Herevana", "TerrAstral Travel", "Where We Learn What Was Happening", and "What We Do/What You Do". ✨✧ Joey PastranaJoey In PR ... CD
Cotique, 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The PR in the title is Puerto Rico – Joey's home before his days in the New York scene, and a country that's really referenced heavily in the cooking salsa feel of the album! In fact, there's a sound here that's really a few years ahead of the rest of the New York scene – a little more of a 70s sound than you'd expect for the time, mixed with other elements that groove with a Latin Soul flourish, and others that stretch back to a history in jazz. The latter is represented by two amazing remakes – Charlie Parker's "Parker's Mood", redone in a Latinized King Pleasure style, with lyrics that substitute "Puerto Rico" for "Kansas City"; and an original tune called "Sids Walk", which is a remake of the bop classic "Symphony Sid" – crucial in that the latter was Sid's old theme when he was a jazz DJ, and the former's a new Latin Soul theme! Other tracks offer an equally compelling mix – and titles include "Hugo", "Jala Con Joey", "El Pollito", "Yesterday", and "Cry Back". The whole thing was handled by the great George Goldner – and as the liner notes say, "Now we have a bitch of an artist, and a bitch of a producer, a combination that has to create a truly great album!" A recent live performance from underground alto genius Jemeel Moondoc – but, like all of his albums in recent decades, a set that feels much more like a lost 70s classic overall! Tracks are long, spiritual, and beautifully building – with a perfect quartet that features Matthew Shipp on piano, Hilliard Greene on bass, and Newman Taylor Baker on drums – flowing openly, with almost a loft jazz sort of vibe – and that never-ending sense of soulful creativity that always comes from Moondoc's horn with ease. Shipp is wonderful too – very much part of the group, and in that almost-reborn style that's had us falling in love with him all over again in recent years. A trio recorded with a great texture of sounds – the guitar of Tetzui Akiyama, the drums of Nicolas Field, and the tenor of Gregor Vidic – the last of which is often blown in this careful, sound-shaping style that's a big change from the usual! Akiyama's guitar is great too – not the louder noise that might be used in an improvisational session like this – and instead a more careful approach to the subtler sonic reaches, with slow-building, soft-glowing elements that are punctuated with bolder moments from Nicolas Field. Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Heinie BeauMoviesville Jazz ... LP
Coral, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $2.99
An obscure west coast session led by reedman Heinie Beau – a player who mostly recorded with film orchestras of the 50s, but who sounds great here in the company of better-known LA names like Howard Roberts, John Graas, Don Fagerquist, Buddy Collette, and Red Callender! The style here is a bit like some of Graas' albums of the time – especially for Decca – tightly arranged, with lots of bold colors and rhythms – but still plenty of space for breakout solo moments on flute, alto, trumpet, tenor, and other reeds. Beau's conception is really wonderful – filled with modern influences, but always strongly swinging – almost in the jazz soundtrack mode you might expect from the title! Brian Eno leaves the Airports, and moves On Land – but still keeps things pretty much in the spare sound of the Ambient series! The lineup here features a few more extra musicians – including Michael Beinhorn on synth, Jon Hassell on trumpet, Axel Gros and Michael Brook on guitars, and Bill Laswell on bass – but all players are used sparingly, and the overall sound hardly acknowledges their presence. Daniel Lanois helped in the recording of some of the material – an early moment in his famous partnership with Eno – and the tracks were recorded over the space of 4 years – with occasional glimmers of the British countryside through the hazy atmospherics of Eno's landscape. Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
An amazing piece of music from Rob Mazurek – and a real testament to the growth as an artist that he's been experiencing in the Marfa scene! The album is all electronic, but has a different vibe than some of Rob's electronic work in Chicago and Brazil – at one level maybe more visual, as it's clearly tied to visual sources – but at another level more structured with a narrative sensibility – so that the progression of sonic elements moves along in a way that really makes sense. At some level, we might even be tempted to call a few of these pieces "songs", although they're still very abstract, and rarely tuneful – just these nicely focused passages created by Mazurek on a modular synth, but in ways that really move past both the regular uses of the instrument, and his more familiar sounds. The genius drummer Hamid Drake joins the Mako Sica trio – a group of electric and acoustic improvisers that features a wide variety of instruments used in a mode that's somewhere between free jazz and some of the best experimental modes of the New York downtown scene in the 80s! The trio features Przemyslaw Kryz Drazek on trumpet, pocket trumpet, and electric guitar; Chaetan Newell on piano, cello, electric piano, and lots of percussion; and Brent Fuscaldo on voice, bass, classical guitar, and harmonica – three instrumentalists working with a very wide range of sound, which is then maybe grounded a bit more by Drake's excellent work on drums and a bit of percussion! The work is definitely in an improvised mode, but also has firmer structures at times – especially when Fuscaldo vocalizes in a non-lyrical mode, which always seems to invoke a bit more rhythm. EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! A really beautiful record from Rob Mazurek – and one of his most different recordings in years! The set's a quartet date, recorded live – and has especially strong input from Kris Davis, who plays both piano and prepared piano – using the acoustic instrument to inflect the music of Mazurek in a really different way! Also great is bassist Ingegbrigt Haker Flaten – always a great presence, but maybe more conventionally swinging at times here than usual, if that's possible. Although the bass may well be driven strongly by the drums of Chad Taylor – a longtime partner of Rob's, but also really showing the growth he's experienced since their more frequent projects from ten to twenty years back. Mazurek himself is almost understated, but in a way that lets the whole group work strongly as a whole – and Rob plays piccolo, trumpet, and modular synth! CD

The approach is fantastic – often as breathy and sound-building as Mazurek's longer pieces in an acoustic setting, but moodier and eerier too – maybe in part because the music was originally created for an installation, but stands here more than strongly enough on its own! It's hard to imagine that eels might even have such qualities, given that they live in such a sound-deadening environment – but Rob's really used their inspiration to create some really great music on his own, further expanding his electronic palette at a time when he's also been giving us some great acoustic sounds. The set features two long pieces – "Psychotropic Electric Eel Dreams IV A" and "Psychotropic Electric Eel Dreams IV B". CD

✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ 107th Street Stickball TeamSaboreando – Pot Full Of Soul (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Dorado/Everland (Austria), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Lost grooves from Spanish Harlem – an incredible set of Latin Soul from The 107th Street Stickball Team! With a name like that, the group certainly aren't as well-remembered as contemporaries like Joe Bataan or Willie Colon, but they've got a soulful groove that definitely fits the style of the time – a sweet uptown blend of Harlem soul and Latin rhythms – with the same blend of sweet soul ballads and uptempo groovers you'd find on some of Bataan's classic albums for Fania Records! Bobby Marin put the whole album together, with a tight groove that's very similar to his work for Speed Records – played here by a group that includes Orlando Marin, Louie Ramirez, Ozzie Torrens, and Joey Pastrana – all kings of Latin Soul at the time! Vocalists include Butch Johnson and Danny Agosto – but there's a real group feel to the record, with lots of harmonies behind the lead – the kind of streetcorner soul you might have heard while catching a stickball game on one of the side streets up north of Harlem. Titles include "Toma Guajira", "Look To Me", "You Put A Hurt In My Heart", "Rhythm & Soul", "Mojo Shingaling", "Barbara With The Kooky Eyes", "Tell Her I Love Her", and "Let Me Do My Thing". LP features unreleased tracks – "Lost In The Jungle", "Hey Mama", "Rose Marie With The Funny Knees", and "Come Live With Me". LP, Vinyl record album
