A really beautiful record, and one that's every bit as righteous as you might guess from its cover and title – maybe even more so, as there's a hugely collaborative energy to the whole record, a sense of group spirit that's not even hinted at on the front! Nududuzo Makhathini is listed as the "composer and conceptualizer" on most tracks – and that's a great way of putting it, as there's definitely a core concept to most of the record – which is then taken up by an array of other musicians and singers, and lifted up with energy that maybe makes the whole thing one of the most spiritual releases on Blue Note since the days of Eddie Gale! Makhathini plays piano, and other musicians include Logan Richardson on alto, LInda Sikhakane on tenor, Ndabo Zulu on trumpet, and Ayanda Sikade on drums – used in a shifting lineup with other players, and joined by voices on some tracks – so that the record has this amazing blend of spiritual and South African jazz modes, with some traces of contemporary soul. A wonderfully uplifting record – with titles that include "Beneath The Earth", "Saziwa Nguwe", "On The Other Side", "Shine", "Indawu", "Umlotha", "Unyazi", and "Saziwa Nguwe". CD

A very different album than you might expect from London reedman Shabaka Hutchings – a set that's got a very peaceful, meditative vibe a times – and one that has Shabaka looking inside for righteous inspiration, then spinning things out in a beautiful way! Hutchings put aside his more familiar tenor for flute on most of the record – although he also blows tenor on one track, plus a bit of shakuhachi and clarinet as well – amidst a shifting array of guests who include Jason Moran and Nduduzo Makhathini on piano, Esperanza Spaulding on bass, Nasheet Waits on drums, Brandee Younger on harp, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Migue Atwood Ferguson on violin – the last two of whom are maybe no surprise, given the vibe of the album. There's vocals on a few tracks – from Saul Williams, Moses Sumney, Elucid, and Laraaji – and Andre 3000 also plays flute on one track too. Titles include "Kiss Me Before I Forget", "Song Of The Motherland", "Breathing", "Insecurities", "End Of Innocence", "As The Planets & Stars Collapse", and "The Wounded Need To Be Replentished". CD

A jam-packed issue of this mighty great magazine – one that not only features a big article on Carla Bley, pictured on the cover – but also more on reedman Azar Lawrence, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, and improvising cellist Abdul Wadud! There's also more on John Zorn's Naked City, Amirtah Kidambi, Ruth Goller, Mette Henriette, and Francois Jeanneau – plus a look at the great spiritual jazz label Gondwana Records, and photos from the We Jazz Festival in 2023! As always, the writing is great, the photos superb, and the large publication is more like a book or journal than a magazine – kind of the Wax Poetics for those who dig jazz! Magazine
