Not the first book on the groundbreaking comedy of the National Lampoon – but a very detailed document of the fantastic story of the magazine – a publication that not only shaped our sensibilities in the 70s, but also had a pretty big impact on radio, recording, and film as well! The story's maybe a bit more open-handed than the film narrative, and writer Ellen Stein goes into great detail about the triumphs and tribulations of the Lampoon organization – in a whopping 448 pages in this hardcover edition. Mighty SparrowSlave ... CD
National/Modern Harmonic, 1963. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A great 60s record from Mighty Sparrow – and the kind of set that shows just how different calypso music could sound when you got away from Harry Belafonte and the hits! The music here is every bit as political and socially conscious as earlier recordings of the genre – but you can also hear some of the cool 60s changes taking place on the Caribbean scene – including great use of horns to inflect most of the tunes with a great sort of edge – in the way Jamaican jazz and mento styles were shifting gears into rocksteady and ska! Sparrow's vocals have plenty of bite – and titles include "The Slave", "Calypso Twist", "Corbeau Sheltering Rain", "Popularity Contest", "Stupid Married Man", "Kennedy & Kruschev", and "Old Man & The Donkey". Ruby AndrewsEverybody Saw You ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1970. New Copy ... $14.99
One of the greatest female soul records ever to come from Chicago – a killer set of work from the legendary Ruby Andrews! Ruby's a hell of a talent that should have been huge at a national level – possessed with a deep soul style that matched the best from Betty Lavette or Mavis Staples, but often set up in more sophisticated arrangements too – in a mode that worked perfectly in a "double-edged sword" model that was often employed by other Chicago singers, like Barbara Acklin or Patty Drew. The album was issued as a follow-up to Ruby's massive cut "Casanova", which is a perfect example of this style – with Ruby's raw vocals over the top, some loping string arrangements underneath, and the whole thing working perfectly together in an amazing blend of styles! The whole album's incredibly strong, and other tracks include "Casanova 70", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", "Tit For Tat", and "Can You Get Away". CD

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Kid Koala, and Dan The Automator pool their skills for this dawn of the 2000s sci-fi hip hop classic – the masterful Deltron 3030! The guest list is almost too long to get into, but Money Mark, Prince Paul, PB Wolf and Mr. Lif are all here, along with many others. One of the benchmark albums in the leftfield underground hip hop canon – and a hugely influential set that burst the doors wide open for the more creative spirits in the hip hop and even experimental pop. Tracks include "State Of The Nation", "3030", "The Fantabulous Rap Extravaganza", "Things You Can Do", "Positive Contact", "St Catherine St.", "Virus", "Mastermind", "National Movie Review", "Time Keeps On Slipping", "Turbulence (remix)", "Battlesong", "Memory Loss" and more. Bernard HerrmannEndless Night (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 2020. New Copy ... $29.99
A new recording of this fantastic score from film legend Bernard Herrmann – one that was a bit overlooked on its release for a 1972 film based on a story by Agatha Christie – and which gets fantastic treatment here by the Basque National Orchestra! The quality of the recording feels more 70s vintage than contemporary – which is great – and the reading features some especially wonderful work on moog by Toni Saigi, whose touches to the score really send things over the top – with a wonderful weirdness next to the starkly strong strings. The reading also features a few soprano voice passages by Nuria Rial – who also has an offbeat quality – and the version of the score here features 31 tracks performed anew, plus 7 more from the film versions and alternates. Harold Johnson SextetHouse On Elm Street ... LP
HME/Survival Research (Italy), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A fantastic soul jazz set from the 60s – one of the few ever cut by pianist Harold Johnson, and a record that brims over with youthful power and new ideas! The Harold Johnson Sextet were an incredible little LA soul jazz combo during the late 60s. Johnson was a very soulful pianist, and he had a heavy soul style that was similar to Ramsey Lewis' Cadet work – but which was also tinged with the lyricism of Horace Silver, and the emerging modal sound of Stanley Cowell. This first session by the group was originally issued on a small label, became a local hit, and was picked up by the Revue label for national distribution. It's got an incredible sound, and is very very catchy. The band features Johnson's piano in a very strong lead – plus flute, alto, and tenor. Billy Jackson plays a hard rolling conga behind the whole thing – and tracks include "House On Elm Street", "Watts '67", "Something Mellow", and "Yeah Uh Huh". LP, Vinyl record album

Kola, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 12.99
Really striking work from Kele – an artist who works in a space that's very much his own, but which follows in a strong British legacy of mashing up modes for political action – a trajectory that might start with Pop Group, and flow strongly through the Tricky and Portishead generation! As we say, Kele's very much his own man, and sounds nothing like those groups – but may well ascend in his own sort of genre-blending glory – spurred on by really creative combinations in the studio, and very pointed messages in his music! Titles include "Secrets West 29th", "Catching Feelings", "A Day Of National Shame", "Back Burner", "Between Me & My Maker", "Natural Hair", "Jungle Bunny", "Let England Burn", and "St Kaepernick Wept". Time, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
A haunting album of shorter chamber works by some lesser known avant garde composers of the 60s. The works are all played by the Hamburger Kammersolisten, with direction by Francis Travis – and instrumentation that includes flute, oboe, violin, cello, and piano. The range of composers is separated by national boundaries, but the pieces are nicely selected, and have a similar sensibility. LP, Vinyl record album

A real standout in the later catalog of the Kinks – a record that gave the group a number of minor hits, and which let them rock out a bit more than usual – in a style that was clearly influenced by the punk of the period, but which also had sort of a Pete Townsend-esque quality to it. One of Radiohead's greatest albums, and probably our favorite – where they boldly dove into stranger, more deeply atmosheric moodcraft than anything they'd released to date! Their follow-up to OK Computer, which was an instant classic for the band, graced with lofty songwriting and impactful lyrics, Kid A is a stunning departure – embracing electronic textures and murky effects over anthemic guitar rock. Royal FlushHot Spot (with bonus tracks) ... CD
GEC/P-Vine (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $20.99
A rare funky gem from the Chicago scene in the pre-house years – but a set that also might be a crucial bridge between the city's 70s soul and the underground clubs that would soon give the world a new groove! The group have plenty of funk elements in the mix – kind of a tightened-up version of P-Funk at times, with lots of bass in the mix – and all these cool moogy keyboard touches – topped by vocals from the group – who often have a call to action sort of vibe, really urging on the groove! The record's definitely too hardcore to have gotten much national radio play – sharper and more wicked than the major label funk of the time – and the use of female vocals in the mix also have a very different vibe than in disco, too – a quality that's hard to describe, but which really stands out. The set features some arrangements by Floyd Morris and Tom Tom 84 – two mighty legends in the Chicago soul scene – and titles include "Doin' It To Def", which has sort of a "We Will Rock You" intro, plus "Hot Spot", "Grab Your Sexy Baby", and "Funk Power". CD features three bonus tracks by the related Jerline & Friends (Jerline Shelton is one of the singers in Royal Flush) – titles that include "Tell Me How Long", "We Need Each Other", and "Got To Let You Know". Delmark, 1953/1954. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Some of the first recordings ever from Chicago legend Junior Wells – made for the small States label in the Windy City, many years before Wells exploded out with much greater national fame! The music here has Junior stepping into the same early electric space that Chess Records was cutting at the time – and given the presence of Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, and Willie Dixon on some of these sides – the group's also not far off either! Wells is the main star throughout, though – alternating bold young vocals and razor-sharp harmonica lines – in the company of players who include Louis Myers, Elmore James, and Muddy Waters on guitar, Johnnie Jones and Otis Spann on piano, Willie Dixon on bass, and Odie Payne on drums. Titles include "Hoodoo Man", "Tomorrow Night", "Eagle Rock", "Junior's Wail", "Throw This Poor Dog A Bone", "So All Alone", "Blues Hit Big Town", and "Lovin Blues". CD

Syllart (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Mid 80s. Used ... $16.99
A 2CD overview of work from the years of Guinea's cultural revolution – a time when the government sought to unify and direct the newly independent nation through a host of regional and national musical programs! Although potentially domineering, the rare effort was actually somewhat liberating – and allowed Guinean musicians to hit a whole new level of expression during this time – modes that weren't necessarily bound towards commercial aims, and which are filled with sophisticated rhythms, melodies, and horn passages that go far beyond some of their African contemporaries. There's many echoes of jazz amidst the tunes – and in a way, some of these numbers remind us of the more free-thinking moments in work by artists like Mulatu or Salah Ragab – especially in the way the horns interact. 2CD set features notes in both English and French – and a total of 25 tracks that include "Sassilon" by Horoya Band, "Armee Guineenne" by Bembeya Jazz National, "Tam Tam Sax" by Momo Wandel, "Bele Bele" by Kade Diawara, "Koulandian" by Ensemble Instrumental De Guinee, "Kadia Blues" by Ochestre De La Paillote, "Diere Lele" by Bah Sadio, "N'Fa" by Virtuoses Diabate, "Massani Cisse" by Quintete Sextete, and "Andree" by Sily Authentic. Grapefruit (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A fantastic introduction to one of the most confusing British styles of the 70s – the huge pub rock moment that preceded punk, and which offered up a stripped-down approach to the music that helped set the scene for plenty of later changes to come! The name is a bit tricky to explain – much of these bands did play pubs and smaller venues, but they also represented a shift amidst the rising tide of arena rock and overblown concept albums – artists who were maybe getting back to basics with tight, sharp songcraft, and the kind of hooks that first made rock and roll so great in the first place – but also served up with all the sense of variety that had crept into the music from the start! There are a few big names that have always been associated with pub rock – but this set is the first we've seen to really showcase the true scope of the music – with 71 tracks in a nice slipcase with detailed notes - work by Chris Spedding, Moon, Legend, Wild Angels, Dr Feelgood, Flip City, Byzantium, Razorbacks, Chaz & Dave, Fox, Count Bishops, Mott The Hoople, Ducks Deluxe, Kiburn & The High Roads, National Flag, Jona Lewie, Roogalator, Deep Feeling, Status Quo, Steve Ellis, STray, The Pirats, Squeeze, Merton Parkas, Inmates, Ian Gomm, and many others! VariousWheedle's Groove – Seattle's Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $6.99
Funk from Seattle? Hardly seems likely – but prepare to be amazed! The funky reissuers at Light In The Attic, in collaboration with Mr Supreme, have unearthed a treasure trove of rare singles and groovers for the set – all obscure local recordings from the Emerald City scene, most of which never made it past the Pacific Northwest to the national charts. Back in the day, Seattle was a real cross-cultural hotbed – filled with folks who'd picked up and moved out from points east, settling in the Central District, working for Boeing, and reveling in the freedom of the new city to find their own groove. This set does a great job of documenting the flowering of eastern-styled funk in Seattle's growing scene of the late 60s – and features a range of tracks that run from deep funk to hard soul, sock-boogaloo, and even a bit of hard-handed piano jazz! The package features a great set of notes on the music, and a long set list that includes "Louie Louie" by The Topics, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Soul Swingers, "This Is Me" by Cookin Bag, "Bold Soul Sister Bold Soul Brother" by Black On White Affair, "Cissy Strut" by Johnny Lewis Trio, "Stop Losing Your Chances" by Cold Bold & Together, "I Just Want To Be" by Robbie Hill, "Wheedle's Groove" by Annakonda, "Hey Jude" by Overton Berry Trio, and "A Little Love Affair" by Patrinell Staten. Narroway (Sweden), 1940s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing legacy in gospel music – three decades' worth of tracks that feature just harmony vocals, no instrumentation at all – in a rich summation of all that the style brought to American music in mid century! Sure, there were some strong harmonies in 60s soul, 50s pop, and later rock – but these are the sorts of cuts that show where so many of those artists got their ideas and inspiration – music that bridges the early years of vocal groups on 78rpm singles, working here with more modern arrangements, and recording quality that really brings out the best in the voices! Many of the artists here are male groups – strong precursors to later doo wop and soul – and as with other Narroway titles, the selection of cuts is wonderful, with a huge amount of material from rare singles. 84 tracks in all – work by Flying Clouds Of Detroit, Famous Blue Jay Singers, Ever Ready Singers, Charming Bells, Silvertone Jubilee Singers, Silver Leaf Quartet Of Florida, Seven Star Juniors, Reliable Jubilee Singers, National Clouds Of Joy, Wings Over Jordan Choir, Traveling Four, Southern Echoes, and many others. Numero, 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Numero Group does it again – and manages to pull together all the best bits from the crucially overlooked powerpop scene in the Land Of Lincoln – a wealth of wonderful groups from the 70s and 80s, all of whom recorded great indie sounds in Illinois! Sure, you've heard of Cheap Trick, and maybe The Kind – but Illinois was also home to handfuls of other great groups – many of whom never found national fame, due to lack of access to the kind of A&R that groups on the coast were getting. The sound here is wonderful – razor sharp guitars, super-tight drums, and tuneful lyrics that still burst forth with plenty of power – a great reminder that not all the hot energy of the late 70s was going into punk rock. As usual, Numero's overdone themselves with the package – lots of info on the groups, and the kind of stylish package that even goes way beyond most of the original records too. Titles include "At Practice" by Band Jocks, "Get Away" by Julian Leal, "I Wanna Make You" by Prettyboys, "Midnight Girls" by Eyz, "Where Are You Now" by Tom Orsi, "More & More" by Lay Z, "See You Tonight" by Contra-Band, "Kyle" by Loose Lips, "Total Insanity" by The Kind, "So Lifelike" by The Jerks, and "I Have Always Loved You" by Paul. BBE (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mad Mats is not only digging beyond the crates here, he's also digging beyond any conventional expectations you might have – as the set's got a unique vibe that may well make it one of the most compelling BBE compilations in years! The music is from the late 60s through the present – but it all comes together in a very future-sounding way – with rhythms that are often offbeat, electric elements that seem to crackle with independent energy, and vocals that can fall down in the mix one minute and burst forth the next! This isn't a dance music compilation, and it's also not a set of rare funk tracks either – and instead, Mats creates his own very personal journey in sound – heedless of time periods, genres, and often national boundaries. Titles include "Take A Stand" by Psalms, "Big Big Boss" by Johnny Moore, "Badly" by Cuthead, "Sherriff (Murlo rmx)" by Gappy Ranks, "Keep The Music Alive" by Yvonne Gray, "Evil Woman" by Bobby Hebb, "Jazz In Outer Space" by BSTC, "The Traveller" by Deft, "Space Based" by Mode M, "Don't Hold Back The Feeling (key trip dub)" by U N I, "Animations" by Intimate Disco, and "Jah I See You" by Ensemble Entendu. ✨✧ VariousSacred Soul – Dave Hamilton's Raw Detroit Gospel 1969 to 1974 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The lost gospel music legacy of Detroit producer Dave Hamilton – a key force in funk and soul in the Motor City in the 60s – where he developed an amazing sound that he also brought to his spiritual recordings as well! Dave's approach was always grittier than that of Motown or some of the sweeter labels in the city – as you might have heard on some of the great Ace/Kent collections of his rare singles and unissued recordings over the years – all compilations that really lay the groundwork for this one, which is brimming over with raw gospel material from a very soulful stretch in the genre! The work here is like the hippest soul gospel recorded by Chess/Checker or Jewel/Paula at the same time – strongly associated with secular soul in terms of instrumentation, arrangements, and production – and graced with message-oriented lyrics that are perfect for the heady times of the late 60s and early 70s. Some of the tracks were issued on the Sacred Sounds label back in the day, and are mixed with some others found in Hamilton's archives – all given the usual great support by Ace with a big booklet of notes and photos. Titles include "Grown Old & Feeble" by The Soul Inspirers, "I Still Remember" by Umble Faith, "Someday We'll Be Together" by The National Independent Singers, "Savoir On The Throne" by Mr Bo, "Pressing On" by The Silver Harps, "I'm Not Ready To Die" by The Scott Singers, "Down Here Praying" by The Detroit Silvertones, "The Little Light" by The Fantastic Voices Of Joy, "I Heard A Voice (part 1)" by Sensational Angelettes, "If I Had My Way" by OC Tolbert & Clara White Houston, and "Life's Pathway" by Rev Evans. Rhymesayers, 2003. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Atmosphere's signature sound full force – but also featuring some of their most experimental material to this point! Slug bounces along melodically, tortured and true to his nature, yet he comes off a little (just a little) more optimistic this time and he recites more than just tales of love lost. He STILL is at his tightest when weaving wonderful heart-wrenching stories instead of bragging, yet I don't think you hear the name Lucy once on this album. Sean Daley, the philosopher? – maybe we'll see more and more of that in the future. ANT's production is sounding much much better since God Loves Ugly – these beats pound just a little harder, seemingly influenced by punk and classic rock, thankfully without coming anywhere near classifiable rap rock. There still is a whole lotta soul in there, which is very nice, yet he still ain't afraid to pitch the formula, say sample some off kilter scatting or a ripping metal guitar. Tracks include "Bird Sings Why The Caged I Know", "Cats Van Bags", "National Disgrace", "Liquor Lyles Cool July". "Good Times", "Keys To Life Vs 15 Minutes Of Fame", "Reflections" and more. 2019 deluxe edition F Side bonus tracks: "Say Shh", "DMFD", "On The Battle Field", "Quiet Pimpin". LP, Vinyl record album

Great early work from Jorge Lopez Ruiz – an Argentine bassist who we already know for his more experimental recordings in the 70s – already sounding like a committed modernist here at the start of the 60s, in very hip group that also includes a young Gato Barbieri on tenor! The titles a reference to Buenos Airies Jazz – music that really seems to reflect the hipper sound of that important national capitol – as Ruiz works here with a very cool group that reminds us of some of the best Italian modernists of the same time – able to absorb the best styles of the American scene, but deliver them with a very special flavor, and a surprising degree of soul! The titles here are a mix of numbers by Ruiz, John Coltrane, Gato Barbieri, and others – played by a group that features the young Gato on tenor, alongside Roberto Fernandez on trumpet, Ruben Lopez Furst on piano, and Pichi Mazzei on drums. Analog Africa (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from 70s Ghana – a killer collection that really lives up to all the greatness of other collections on the Analogue Africa label! There's a sharpness here right from the start – an approach to funk that's really universal, and shows why collections from a generation like this move way past the context of standard world music modes – and instead unlock a rich version of the world in which music alone can build plenty of bridges – way beyond the context of politics or national boundaries! By that, we mean that any Anglo crate-digger can find plenty to love here – wicked drums, scratchy guitar, riffing Hammond, and monstrous bass that bounces these tunes beautifully from start to finish – sewing together the grooves in a way that will have you forgetting you can't even understand most of the lyrics. And yet, as with other titles on this great label, the music is also well-situated culturally too – thanks to a hefty set of notes and great images – which will give you plenty of visual discovery while you're digging the sounds on the disc. A much-needed look at the massive amount of music recorded in Kenya during the 70s and 80s – an incredibly fertile time for local culture in the nation – and a time when it seemed like there was a great new groove coming out nearly every day! The work here really rivals the best of the classic Soundway compilations – especially their strong surveys of Ghana and Nigeria, with an ear for grooves that go way beyond the usual mainstream sounds of world music! There's more than enough grit and funk here to please any fan of American funk and soul – but the sounds also go way way deeper, too – and echo not only a long Kenyan cultural heritage, but also reflect the unique place the nation had at the crossroads of East Africa – a site that often made the scene especially vibrant in these years. RCA/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Great work from vibist Gary Burton – two RCA albums back to back on a single CD! First up is Lofty Fake Anagram – a standout classic from Burton, and the kind of fresh-voiced and angularly modern session that showed why his sound on the vibes was one of the most revolutionary in jazz at the time! The session features a quartet with Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums – all working in a style that's got touches of modal jazz, and fragments of the Walt Dickerson sound – yet which is also a bit looser, freer, and more spacious – all without going too far "out". Titles include "Lines", "I'm Your Pal", "Fleurette Africaine", "Feelings & Things", "June The 15th, 1967", and "Good Citizen Swallow". Next up is Genuine Tong Funeral – billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words", an extended piece written by Carla Bley, and performed by the Burton quartet with help from a larger group that includes Steve Lacy, Gato Barbieri, Michael Mantler, and Bley herself. As such, the album's probably the most ambitious one that Burton ever recorded during the 60s – never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from his other sides for RCA. It also makes it one of his best, too – as the record has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley, never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". CD

A mighty nice set from Berkely Ike Jones – guitarist and one of the founders of the legendary Blo – working here in a groove that's a bit more Afro disco overall, but which still has all the great touches of his previous work! The music's plenty funky, but more in a clubby way than some of the more familiar Afro Funk modes you might know from the mid 70s – with lyrics in English, and an overall vibe that's like the best post-colonial work coming from the Paris and London scenes at the time! Part of the album was recorded in London, which may account for the vibe – and the instrumentation is tightly played, but never slick. There's definitely some politics in the mix, too – surprisingly righteous lyrics, on tunes that include "It's Time For Nation Building", "Calling Health Men/Police", "Tears In The Ghetto", "National Pledge", and "1979". The group's a quartet, with Christian Reim on piano, Bjorn Kjellemyr on bass, and Ole Jacob Hansen on drums – and although all players are clearly acquainted with some of the newer ideas in jazz at the time, they also nicely keep things inside on most tracks – with a subtle swing that really suits Neumann's tone. The great trombonist Eje Thelin follows – leading a quintet with Ulf Andersson on tenor and Lars Joesten on piano – on the very long "Antibes Jam". The music has native Indian percussion, vocals and other elements with electric guitar and organ, and fuzzy garage and funk flavors filtering through. Includes "A Trip To Katmandu", "International Peace", "Calcutta Calcutta", "Come On Dance With Me", "Dancing Rope", "Arabika", "In Loving You" and "Forget Me Not". CD

✨✧ Rim Kwaku Obeng & The BelieversRim Arrives/International Funk ... CD
BBE (UK), 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
A damn soulful album from Ghanaian percussionist Rim Kwaku Obeng – recorded in LA at the end of the 70s, with loads of sweet clubby touches in the mix! Rim gets in plenty of tight percussion – lots of which showcases his rim-heavy approach to the drums – and also plays keyboards and sings a bit too – in a larger group that mixes in some very hip LA funky elements, a bit like some of the criss-crossing that Hugh Masekela did on his Chisa Records sessions! The style makes for a great bit of funky club with lots of deeper acoustic percussion elements in the sound – and titles include the massive break classic "Funky Drummer", plus "Nothing Is Free", "Spend Your Money", "Gas Line", "Sunkwa", and "Believe In Yourself". Special package – also includes the bonus 12" tracks "International Funk (voc)", and "International Funk (inst)". CD

✨✧ Jack Sheldon/John Graas/Westlake College QuintetCollege Goes To Jazz/International Premiere In Jazz/French Horn Jazz ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1953/1956/1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
The naming of this CD's a bit unusual – as it's issued under the name of trumpeter Jack Sheldon, who's only featured on 3 of its 22 tracks – but that's hardly a problem for us, as the bulk of the work features arrangements by the great John Graas! The first 11 tracks on the set from a 1956 Decca session by The Westlake College Quintet, a hipper group than you'd expect – especially since they're all college kids! John Graas found these guys playing at Westlake College, and he rightly thought they had a sound that was well worth recording for Decca – not surprising, since these guys have a similar chamber modern groove to some of Graas' own work for the label. The ensemble features tenor, trombone, bass, drums, and piano, the last of which is played by Dick Grove, probably the only player in the group who went onto become a more famous name. The titles include a lot of Graas originals – including "Ghost Talk", "Westlake Bounce", "Theme", "Mood", and "La Paz". Next up are the Sheldon tracks – 3 titles from the West Coast All Star Ninet album International Premier In Jazz – led by Sheldon, and featuring Graas, Art Pepper, Buddy Collette, Bill Perkins, and Larry Bunker – all working through a 3-part suite entitled "Jazz Chaconne No 1". Last up are 8 tunes from a 1953 album for Kapp – entitled French Horn Jazz – and featuring John Graas alternating between an octet that features Jimmy Giuffre, Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne and Bud Shank, and a quintet with Jack Montrose, Gerald Wiggins, Walter Clark, and Larry Bunker. Tunes on that set include "Lady Like", "Egypt", "Argyles", "Blue Haze", "Pyramid", "6/4 Trend", "Not Exactly", "Cordova", "Be My Guest", "Frappe", "Bananera", and "Sequence". CD

✨✧ VariousInternational Holy Hill Jazz Meeting ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A legendary moment in European free jazz – performances all recorded on a single Sunday in 1969 – but which stand as some of the most powerful music of the time! The vibe here is often in the best spirit of early FMP, or maybe the most outside work of MPS – and the recording quality equals the best avant jazz on both labels – with very long performances on each track that represent the pinnacle of all players involved! One side alone is worth the price of admission – a searing track titled "Finally", performed by an octet with Peter Brotzmann at the helm, alongside Evan Parker on tenor and soprano sax, Fred Van Hove on piano, Paul Rutherford on trombone, Peter Kowald on bass, and Pierre Favre on drums. Favre returns on "Let's Talk About The Weather" – played by a trio with Kowad on bass and Irene Schweizer on piano. Other tracks include "Five To Five" and "Gluga Gluga Blues" by the Joki Freund Quintet, "In Memory Of John Coltrane" by Marion Brown, "Vibration" by the group of saxophonist Joe Fiera and trombonist Ed Kroger, and "Circus Live" by a quartet led by Rolf Kuhn on electric clarinet, with Joachim Kuhn on piano and Stu Martin on drums. ✨✧ VariousAustin Powers International Man Of Mystery – Original Soundtrack (pink & orange vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Hollywood, 1997. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The classic Austin Powers movie did a great job of bridging the 60s and the 90s with its story – and the soundtrack follows along similar modes, too – by combining classic lounge tracks from back in the day with new numbers that have a a bit of a retro vibe! Titles include the hit "Soul Bossa Nova" by Quincy Jones – which maybe sold more copies from the movie than it did back in the 60s – plus "Austin's Theme" by James Taylor Quartet, "Call Me" by Mike Flowers Pops, "Austin Powers" by Wondermints, "What The World Needs Now Is Love" by Burt Bacharach with The Posies, "Mas Que Nada" by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66, "Carnival" by The Cardigans, "BBC" by Ming Tea, "The Magic Piper Of Love" by Edwyn Collins, and "You Showed Me" by The Lightning Seeds.
