The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

Sam Jones plays funky bass, and brother Cannonball joins on on alto for a nice set of groovers that includes "In The Bag", "Sister Wilson", "Low Brown", and "New Arrival". Nice stuff, and we don't really see this one that much these days. CD

A really brilliant little record from Nat Adderley – one that shows him shaking off the groove gotten from brother Cannonball, and finding some great space all on his own! The setting here is tight and funky – at a level that's a bit more arranged than a small combo soul jazz session, but which still has plenty of sharp edges and bold notes! The groove's a bit like Kudu Records from the time, but less electric overall – and Nat's cornet is featured in a hip combo with John Stubblefield on reeds, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano and keyboards, and Buddy Williams on drums. There's plenty of great funky riffing in the set, but also some wonderfully laidback grooves that really sparkle with electric piano from Gumbs – and titles include a surprisingly wonderful version of "MASH", plus "Hummin", "Midnight Over Memphis", "The Traveler", "Listen To The Rain", and the Latin-tinged "Amor Sonador". Two tight soul jazz albums from the 60s! Soul Experiment is a wonderful session of hip soul jazz tracks from Freddie Hubbard – mostly short tight and groovy, but played with a sophisticated style that points the way towards the soul jazz sound of the 70s. Soul Experiment is a fitting title – as Freddie works hard with hip players like Billy Butler, Carlos Garnett, and Kenny Barron to kick out some rhythms that are different than those heard on his earlier albums. Garnett, Hubbard, and Barron all contribute original titles to the album – including the tracks "Hang 'Em Up", "Soul Experiment", "Midnite Soul", "Lonely Soul" – and they do a great version of Walter Bishop's groover "Soul Turn Around". Autobiography is a similar album – although a bit more groovy – and it features Nat's shimmering cornet in the company of some tight arrangements by Joe Zawinul. The album boasts a number of different groups – but they're all pretty compact, and they groove along in that pop soul jazz mode that Atlantic was putting forth as its answer to grooves on Blue Note and Prestige during the 60s. The set features all original material by Nat – including old and new favorites like "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Never Say Yes, "Jive Samba", "Stony Island", "Junkanoo", and "Work Song". CD

An incredible album that has Cleanhead moving way past his usual bag! Sure, he's normally known as an R&B vocalist and alto player, but here, in one of those great Riverside "Cannonball Adderley Presents" sessions, Vinson gets into a whole new bag on some cuts. He's playing with Cannonball's group of Nat, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes – and there's one track in particular that's amazing – "Arriving Soon", an instrumental that has Vinson soaring on alto, wailing with an almost Coltrane-esque level of freedom. It's a killer modal track, and is worth the price of the album alone. There's another instrumental called "Vinsonology", plus vocal numbers like "Hold It", "This Time", and "Kidney Stew" – all with a nice groovy Adderley quintet kind of groove. One of the greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – and one of the rarest! The record is right in the same vein as Roy's groundbreaking He's Coming LP – a righteous mix of soul jazz, subtle funk, and some of the cosmic wisdom that Roy was spreading among the jazz funk underground – all wrapped up beautifully, but never in a way that's like commercial soul of the time. There's a few instrumental tracks on the album, plus some vocal ones that show that off-beat male/female style that Roy would use more famously in later tracks like "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" or his work with Ramp. Players include Harry Whitaker on electric piano, Edwin Birdsong on organ, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, Jumma Santos on congas – and titles include a version of Nat Adderley's "Hummin", done as "Hummin In The Sun", and very much in the Ramp vein. Also features instrumental cuts "The Fuzz", which has Roy's vibes toned way up, and the cool mellow "The Painted Desert", a really offbeat slow jazz number. Tremendous work from saxophonist Paul Gonsalves – one of his rare UK sessions from the 60s, all of which show that he had a fantastic sound that went way beyond his more famous work with Duke Ellington! The style here is tight, hip, and very grooving – work by a quartet that features Gonsalves on tenor, plus Pat Smythe on piano, Kenny Napper on bass, and Ronnie Stevenson on drums – all hitting a soulful hardbop style that's very much like the best Tubby Hayes records from the time! Gonsalves' tone is incredible – with that raspy, almost flatted mode that he used with Ellington – and it really stretches out here with plenty of room for creativity, in a way that makes us wonder why nobody ever got this one issued over on our side of the Atlantic.
