✨✧ NasIllmatic ... LP
Columbia/Get On Down, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
Nas's debut LP masterpiece Illmatic – which will probably stand forever as one of the greatest hip hop full lengths of its time – maybe even for all time. Nas has had some creative ups-and-downs over the years, but nothing can take away the impact of this damn near perfect slice of east coast street hop. Nasir, "World Is Yours", indeed. This one truly one of the great, filler free, beginning-to-end classics with not a wasted second on it – 100% lean with masterful production by DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock and Q-Tip – and the titles include "NY State Of Mind", "Life's A B***h", "Half Time", "One Love", "Memory Lane", "Represent" and more. "Thief's Theme" is the first single from the Street Disciple double album, one that's actually a hidden track on the LP. We never would have guessed that a sample of the riff "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" would sound so good, but here it is! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ NasIt Was Written ... LP
Columbia/Get On Down, 1996. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second album, and even if it's not as dope as as the mythical Illmatic, but how could anyone hope to live up to those expectations? The Trakmasters come up with some nice beats, chided for being a bit on the commercial side by critics at the time, but they've aged a lot better than most street rap chart fodder at the time. Lyrically Nas is still on point, and going back to this record, especially considering a few of the ones he's dropped since, it wears well with the test of time. Includes "Street Dreams", "If I Ruled The World", "Affirmative Action" and "Black Girl Lost" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ NasHip Hop Is Dead ... LP
Def Jam, 2006. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Leave it to career iconoclast Nas to declare Hip Hop Is Dead on his Def Jam debut – a defiantly straight up hip hop record that's one of the leanest full lengths he's delivered since his abbreviated debut masterpiece! Hip Hop Is Dead, not surprisingly, is actually a very lively LP – and it's tried-and-true hip hop – another in Nas's strong series of subsequent LPs of the 00s. Nas once released a perfect piece of work – something very few artists in any idiom ever do – setting up a nearly impossible standard to live up to, but, Hip Hop Is Dead is well worth your time. Production by Salaam Remi (natch), LES, Kanye West, Scott Storch (who delivers a Kanye-like sound on one cut) and others. Titles include "Money Over Bullsh*t", "You Can't Kill Me", "Carry On Tradition", "Hip Hop Is Dead" feat Will I Am, "Black Republican?" feat Jay Z, "Not Going Back" feat Kelis, "Still Dreamin" feat Kanye West & Chrisette Michelle, "Hold Down The Block", "Blunt Ashes", "Play On Playa", "Where Are They Now?", "Let There Be Light" feat Tre Williams, "Hustlers" feat The Game & Marsha Ambrosious and more. A sequel to Nas's legendary Lost Tapes with beats by a who's who of post-millennium hip hop production heavyweights and versatile rhymes by one of best ever! The original Lost Tapes was a game changer, a raw showcase for his rhymes style at it's core essence that followed a hit and miss creative and commercial run. Nas has been comfortable in his legacy and doing pretty solid work in the years leading up to Lost Tapes 2, so this one on more of a worthwhile bonus batch of worthy for his later career rather than a restatement of core strength. Tracks produced by Swizz Beatz, Statik Selektah, RZA, Kanye, No ID, Pharrell and others. Joyce with Joao DonatoAquarius ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A beautiful collaboration between two of our favorite Brazilian artists ever – the lovely Joyce and bossa piano legend Joao Donato – both of whom have held onto all of their best early charms of their music! The session's definitely got a Joyce flavor upfront, as she's the main vocalist – but Donato's piano is a strong factor too – pulsating wonderfully with those warmly-crafted rhythms he's always done better than anyone else – that unique stop/start groove first forged in the 60s, heard best on his 70s work, and resurrected here to provide a fresh new setting for Joyce! Arrangements are by Donato and Joyce, and by Jesse Sadoc, who plays trumpet in the group – and the production's got a slightly rootsy quality, without any too-slick modes that might hurt the intimacy of a special session like this. Titles include "Amazonas No 2", "Feminina", "Aquarius", "Chama O Donato", "Tardes Caricas", "Caymmi Visita Tom", and "Amor Nas Estrelas". CD

The legendary Def Jam label serves up a big message in its music – bringing together hip hop cuts from the past and present, all as a way of dealing with the issues that broke big in 2020! At some level, the set's almost a "best of" for the label – although not all these cuts were hits, and work together more as a release by Def Jam that's maybe a bit more overtly political than some of their recent releases. ✨✧ Kanye WestLate Registration (clean version) ... CD
Def Jam, 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Time will tell whether the sophomore LP Late Registration will prove to be as revolutionary of a commercial force as College Dropout turned out to be – but it's a better album! We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! The legendary unreleased LP album from Large Professor – recorded for Geffen in the mid 90s, finally seeing official release by Large Professor's own Paul Sea Productions! It's a solid effort, with a vibe that for some reason wasn't speaking to Geffen brass at the time, but it stands up now as a pretty faultless example of solid blueprint beatcraft by one of the scene's pioneers. Some of the production is laidback and jazzy, some has a more booming bass beat, and LP's rhymes are tailored nicely to his beats. Titles include "That Bulls**t", "Hungry", "I Juswanna Chill", "Funky 2 Listen 2", "Mad Scientist", "Hard", "One Plus One" feat Nas (not too far removed from his Large Pro collaborations on Illmatic at this point), "The LP", "Dancin' Girl", "Large Pro:Verbs", "Havin' Fun", "Spacey", "Amaman", "Queens Lounge", "Bowne" and "Big Willie". ✨✧ Amy WinehouseAmy Winehouse Collection (Frank/Back To Black/Lioness/Live In London/Rarities) (5CD set) ... CD
Universal, 2000s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just a box set of the key albums from the all-too-short career of Amy Winehouse – as this massive package also features a wealth of rarities and live tracks – some making their CD debut in this limited collection! The set leads off with Frank – the stunning debut from UK soul singer Amy Winehouse – a vocalist with a sound that's instantly captivating, and which will be with us for years! Amy's clearly cut her chops in jazz, but also has a laidback and soulful personality – easily shifting between modes for the right mood of each song, without any of the pretensions that would ruin an album like this. The backings have a proud stepping feel that fits well with tunes like "In My Bed", "What Is It About Men", "F*ck Me Pumps", and "You Sent Me Flying" – really keeping Amy's spirit fresh throughout the whole set! Next is Back to Black – an incredible album from Amy Winehouse – even way better than her fantastic debut! Although a contemporary soul album, this one's steeped in tradition – soul styles that run the gamut from Detroit down to Kingston, and which are carried off here with a rougher, sharper-edged sound than before! The instrumentation on here is really mindblowing – almost at a Motown level, with isolated instruments really crackling out from the fuller backings – all set to rhythms that snap and bounce, and are almost a bit funky at times. Credit is definitely due to producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi – but Amy's vocals are really tremendous too – classic, but really personal and fresh! Titles include "Rehab", "Just Friends", "Back To Black", "Love Is A Losing Game", "He Can Only Hold Her", "Some Unholy War", and "Me & Mr Jones". Next is Lioness Hidden Treasures – a (sadly) posthumous release from Amy Winehouse – a voice we loved for a couple good years before knowing how troubled she was in real life and now lament the loss of – and this set, largely put together by producer Salaam Remi turned out surprisingly well! It'd be pretty easy to bow to cynicism, but for our money, there's more than enough strong stuff here. It features production by Remi, plus Mark Ronson on a couple tracks, and it's a mix of styles that ably demonstrate Amy's depth as an interpreter. There's some great, kinda late night jazzy soul numbers, classic level 60s R&B and thoroughly modern hip hop soul – all with strong vocal performances from Amy. Includes "Our Day Will Come", "Between The Cheats", "Tears Dry (Original Version)", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (2011)", "Like Smoke" feat Nas (and some eerily timely lyricism, as of this album's release date), "Valerie ('68 Version)", "Half Time", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Half Time", "Body & Soul" with Tony Bennett, "A Song For You" and more. Next is the 2LP set Live In London – the vinyl debut of material from the DVD of the same name – with titles that include "Just Friends", "Cherry", "Back To Black", "Wake Up Alone", "Tears Dry On Their Own", "He Can Only Hold Her/Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Valerie", "Rehab", "Me & Mr Jones", "Monkey Man" and more. Last is the album Remixes – which features the CD debut of 15 tracks – material from Frank and Back To Black – remixed by MJ Cole, Al Usher, Skeewiff, Truth & Soul, Ghostface, Hot Chip, and others. Proof that Brazil may well be poised to become the next modern rock capitol of the 21st century – and a tight little set that's filled with youthful energy and some extremely catchy songs! The format here is nothing groundbreaking – very much in a guitar, bass, drums mode that's been explored by American groups from the late 70s onward – but there's a power pop sensibility here that's extremely compelling, and one that means that even though all of the tunes have Portuguese lyrics, they've still got a strong boundary-crossing ability. Titles include "Doce Ilusao", "Homem Vespera", "Pernas Pro Ar", "Stella", "Tempo Certo", "Vida A Dois", and "De Ouvir Falar". CD

That's "Fishman", not fisherman – and the tune's a rare b-side from the insanely funky group Beginning Of The End – presented here in a never-issued full length take that runs for nearly 12 minutes in length! A fantastic live follow-up to the Caravanas album by Chico Buarque – and done at a similar level that shows that Chico's lost none of his charms as the years go by! The set's got the man upfront, singing and playing acoustic guitar – with a combo behind him, kicking up the rhythms in a great way – maybe with a bit more force than on the studio album, as Chico and the group run through an extended lineup of songs that's really great all the way through! The whole thing's a fantastic reminder of the way that Brazilian culture never lets go of its musicians, even as they age – and the musicians themselves continue to grow great as they mature, only rewarding the culture with great gifts like this in the process. Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... About June 16, 2021
Swirling spiritual work from Alice Coltrane – an incredible trio album that features her heavily on harp, plus a bit of piano – in a trio with Ron Carter on bass and Rashied Ali on drums! The sound is wonderful – lush, yet contemplative – in a personal style that really shows Alice beginning to express herself in new modes after the death of The Great One. The us of harp is especially incredible – handled here with a sense of majesty that really leaves us breathless, and which goes far beyond other use of that instrument in jazz. And even Alice's piano is surprisingly nice – with these mellow, earthy undertones that bubble at the bottom and ground the whole effort on earthly territory. ✨✧ Alice ColtraneMonastic Trio ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... About June 16, 2021
Early work by Alice Coltrane – somewhat under the shadow of her late husband, as you'd guess from the use of his name on the front cover – but really stepping out here with a voice of her own! The Monastic Trio of the set features Alice on harp and piano – alongside bass from Jimmy Garrison and drums by either Ben Riley or Rashied Ali – both really fluid players who open up nicely in this way that's never to far out, at least in the way that John Coltrane was using rhythms at the time – but which allow Alice to really take the lead as a bold musical visionary of her own! Perhaps most exciting, Pharoah Sanders sits in on one of the album's longest tracks – blowing tenor with a force that's enough to bring back The Great One – but the real charm of the set is Alice's piano work, bubbling out here with a sensitivity that we never would have expected from the harder-edge sessions cut with Coltrane – that new level of spirituality she instantly brought to her own solo sessions. Titles include "Ohnedaruth", "Lovely Sky Boat", and "Atomic Peace". CD

Moody sounds from this reunited trio – Thollem McDonas on piano, William Parker on bass, and Nels Cline on guitar and effects – coming together here in a session that, we think, was recorded at the same time as their previous Gowanus album! As before, the music is maybe heavier in territory that we know from Cline – open, spacious, and with lots of sonic resonance between the individual elements – particularly the jagged sounds of the piano and the more subtle shadings of the guitar – but still at a level that makes Parker's bass a crucial grounding for the whole performance. The set features two long tracks – "Life In The World" and "World In A Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Bitches Brew is the club, not the sound of the music – a night spot in Yokohama where European reedman Liudas Mockunas improvised these performances in the company of a range of different Japanese players! The lineup shifts with each track, as do the horns handled by Mockunas – who blows tenor and soprano sax – plus a very cool "water prepared soprano sax" – in the company of Akira Sakata on clarinet and alto, Masayo Koketsu on alto, Eiichi Hayashi on alto, Yoshihide Otomo on guitar, and Kazutoki Umezu on bass clarinet, alto, and soprano! All tracks are nice and long, and filled with the sort of sharp reed interplay you'd know from both the music of Mockunas or Sakata – on titles that include "Brown Line", "Green Line", "Red Line", "Blue Line", and "Yellow Line". Three different works, all created for artist Joan Jonas, and each with a slightly different approach! Pianist Jason Moran has a creative relationship with Jonas that extends back longer than a decade – and over the course of these pieces, you can really hear their ideas develop – from an initial mix of the music of Moran and the text of Jonas, to some richer more textural passages that are almost like paintings in music, words, and sound all coming together at once! Moran plays some keyboards in addition to acoustic piano, Jonas handles a bit of percussion, and the set also features voice by two other performers too. The works are "The Shape The Scent The Feel Of Things", "Reanimation", and "They Come To Us Without A Word". CD

Minstrel/Roundtable (Australia), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 31.98
Some of the moodiest, most unusual music we've ever heard from Mario Nascimbene – an artist who's maybe best known for working in the more romantic side of the spectrum, but who here is using a "mixerama" keyboard – which works a bit like the mellotron to sample elements, then put them into a specific scale! The tunes are often stark and spare, and build slowly in these waves of sonic energy – almost with a quality that feels more like the industrial underground of Zoviet France or Hafler Trio than anything we might have expected from Nascimbene, especially in the 60s. The album features a selection of songs used in short documentary films directed by Roberto Rossellini – and titles include "Angoscia", "Totalia Viole-Celli", "Attesa Antica", "Situazione Orientale", "Riberbo Di Tam Tam", "Percussione Di Timpani", "Tragedia Greca", and "Lunare". Fabiano Do NascimentoDanca Dos Tempos ... CD
Now Again, 2015. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A contemporary record, but one that's got an amazingly timeless feel – like the best early 70s material from Brazilian artists like Airto, Hermeto Pascoal, or Egberto Gismonti! The music of Fabiano Do Nascimento has a similar genre-breaking quality to these giants – not straight jazz, but very jazzy in parts – not traditional Brazilian roots, either – but very schooled in the strongest elements from decades of creativity on that scene – all wrapped up in this fresh, new blend that's completely mesmerizing right from the start! Most instrumentation is acoustic, and relatively simple – guitar, percussion, drums, and vocals – but the arrangements are wonderful, and fold these familiar elements together in ways that are completely unique. The legendary Airto guests on the record – but the vision here is clearly that of Fabiano Do Nascimento – as he mixes together works by Hermeto Pascoal, Baden Powell, and other Brazilian composers with some bold new ideas of his own. Titles include "Forro Brasil", "Minha Ciranda", "Etude", "Primeira Estrella", "Tupi", "Se Ela Preguntar", "Tocatta Em Ritmo De Samba", and "Nana". CD

Now Again, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A really beautiful second album from Fabiano Do Nascimento – and a set that really blows away his debut! This record's got an "instant classic" vibe right from the start – the kind of set that you could easily listen next to 70s gems by artists like Lo Borges, Milton Nascimento, or Edu Lobo – with a sound that hangs between the complexity and soul of all three of those artists – but a presentation that's also very personal and unique! Fabiano plays acoustic guitar throughout, with a cascading vibe that's incredibly compelling – and often offset by light flute and percussion, which skitter alongside his beautiful vocals – in ways that are always upbeat, but never too polished – really preserving this organic core in his music! The sound is sublime – sophisticated, but very organic – and if you know us at all, we're not ones to throw around the term "classic" lightly when it comes to Brazilian music. Titles include "Planalto", "Baiao", "Brasilerinho", "Ja Que Tu", "Oye Nana", "O Tempo", "Canto De Xango", and "Louva A Deus Mantis". CD

A second great statement from the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – that special assemblage of musicians from his home territory of Minas Gerais, augmented here in slight ways that maybe make the album an even more ambitious record than the first! All the best artists from the previous set are in place here – including the sublime Lo Borges on vocals, Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on bass and guitar – but the set also features contributions from other Brazilian talents – including Chico Buarque on vocals, Ed Maciel on trombone, Paulo Jobim on guitar, and even Azimuth on a bit of grooves! As with the first set, the mix of modes is amazing – all the rich, soulful qualities of Milton Nascimento's best early work – but delivered in a magnificently collaborative mode that never wastes a minute of the extended double-length space of the album. As before, songs are penned by most of the collaborators – and titles include "E Dai", "Pao E Agua", "Canoa Canoa", "Credo", "Nascente", "Meu Menino", "Que Bom Amigo", and "Dona Olimpia". Johnny NashStir It Up – The Anthology 1965 to 1979 ... CD
Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The first-ever collection to really do justice to the music of Johnny Nash – despite the fact that the man himself racked up a few global hits back in the 70s! Nash is a heck of an interesting singer – born in Texas, and able to croon both deep soul and jazz – which he did on a string of labels into the mid 60s – before taking matters into his own hands, starting his own label, and also picking up on the new sounds of Jamaica – which he mixed with American soul in a way that helped catapult him to the top of the charts in both the US and UK! Nash's sound is never straight reggae, but it also has some Jamaican rhythmic elements in it at times – although the range of work here also includes some wicked early singles by Johnny on his own JAD imprint, and some other late 70s efforts that show him moving into some other sophisticated styles too. The 2CD set features a whopping 46 tracks in all – plus detailed notes on Nash's career – with titles that include "Wonderful Woman", "Let's Move & Groove", "Cupid", "You Got Soul", "Groovin", "Yellow House", "Ooh What A Feeling", "My Merry Go Round", "Nice Time", "Celebrate Life", "Closer (12" mix)", "You're The One", "Mr Sea", "Birds Of A Feather", "What A Wonderful World", "Rock It Baby", "Tears On My Pillow", "The Very First Time", "I Can See Clearly Now", "There Are More Questions Than Answers", "Guava Jelly", and "The Edge Of Love". Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... $9.99
A big overview of the early work of Johnny Nash – a singer that most folks know for a huge crossover radio hit in the early 70s, but who got his start much earlier, through years of recording for ABC Records! The label really saw the young Nash as a singer to challenge Nat King Cole or Johnny Mathis – and he definitely does a great job in the territory of both here, but also really finds his own space too – eventually ending up more as a precursor to the sorts of 60s male singers who were adept at more heartbreaking material, ala Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson. Arrangements are large and rich, often with a bit of vocals behind the lead of Nash – on 31 tracks that include "Moment Of Weakness", "Love's Young Dream", "Too Much Love", "World Of Tears", "Kisses", "The End Of The World", "Almost In Your Arms", "Roots Of Heaven", "The Wish", "Too Proud", and "Take A Giant Step" – plus the unusual "Teen Commandments", done with Paul Anka and George Hamilton IV! The first-ever proper presentation of one of the most legendary Elvis Presley recording sessions – a marathon five day series of recordings done in Nashville, in which Elvis was working with hip backing from the Nashville Cats, and really breaking past some of the stale material that had dogged too many of his records in the 60s! The music is a great counterpart to the Presley sessions at American Studios in Memphis the year before – and like those, there's a spirit here that's undeniable – the King really getting back to basics, and showing his best ear for both the right tunes, and the right sort of folks to help him put the sound across. James Burton is on guitar, and Eddie Hinton joins in a bit too – and the rest of the group is equally legendary – a performance that was sadly originally chopped up by RCA, and issued on a number of different albums – with lots more material left in the can. 2LP set features 22 tracks in all – one album of rock, one of country – with titles that include "Stranger In The Crowd (take 5)", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Just Pretend (take 2)", "I've Lost You (take 1)", "Got My Mojo Working/Keep Your Hands Off Of It", "How The Web Was Woven (take 1)", "Tomorrow Never Comes (takes 10/11)", "Little Cabin On The Hill (take 1)", "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water", and "The Fool". Earl ScruggsNashville's Rock/Dueling Banjos/Storyteller & The Banjo Man/Top Of The World ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Four post-Flatts albums from the great Earl Scruggs – served up in a single set! First up is Nashville's Rock – a very unusual album from legendary bluegrass musician Earl Scruggs – a set that has him taking on a whole host of famous 60s rock tunes, and turning them into hip banjo-led instrumentals! By the time of the record, Earl had influenced a host of countless rockers – and it's quite a compelling change for Scruggs to handle material from that same scene, but bring it all right straight back to Nashville with his performance! Later Scruggs might end up in territory that was too rockish, but this record definitely has his classic sound right up front in the mix – even on the few tracks that might have a female backing chorus. Titles include "Everybody's Talkin", "Nashville Skyline Rag", "Hey Jude", "Love Is Just A Four Letter Word", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Honky Tony Women", and "Train Number Forty Five". Dueling Banjos is a record that takes its title from the big Deliverance hit by Eric Weissberg – but a set that reminds the world that when it comes to banjo, there's maybe nobody better than the great Earl Scruggs! And while the record has some of the elements of the Earl Scruggs Revue sound – in that his sons Randy and Gary are on the set – the whole thing is also all instrumental, and has a much more bluegrass-oriented vibe – thanks in part to great help from Vassar Clements on fiddle, Josh Graves on dobro, and Chip Young on guitar! The instrumentation is fantastic – and titles include "Peking Fling", "Just Joshin", "Flint Hill Special", "Black Mountain Blues", "Fireball Mail", and "Lonesome Ruben". Storyteller & The Banjo Man is a fantastic return to form for the great Tom T Hall – and a record that hints a bit at the bluegrass direction his later small label records would take! Earl Scruggs and his sons provide great musical backing, while Tom sings lead in that fantastic style of his – sometimes telling his own stories, sometimes singing the words of others – all in a lean, respectful, acoustic-driven setting that's maybe even better than most of Hall's own records at the time! Titles include "Shackles & Chains", "The Engineers Don't Wave From The Trains Anymore", "Song Of The South", "Don't Give Your Heart To A Rambler", "Dim Lights Thick Smoke", "No Expectations", "There Ain't Country Music On The Jukebox", and "Don't This Road Look Rough & Rocky". Top Of The World is a great late career album from Earl Scruggs – a set that features his sons still in the mix, but with a whole sort of production style and presentation that almost makes the whole thing a tribute to Earl's greatness! There's plenty of strong banjo solos in the lineup – and guests include Ricky Skaggs, Tracey Nelson, and the Burrito Brothers – but all used sparingly, with just the right vocal augmentation next to the instrumentation – and plenty of room for solos throughout. Titles include "Till the End Of The World Rolls Round", "Lay Me Down In Dixie", "Roller Coaster", "Carolina Star", "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart", and "Love Gone Cold". CD

Sansu/Charly (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 17.98
Think you know Huey Piano Smith? Think again – as this massively overstuffed set shows that there's plenty more to discover! Instead of Huey's over-reissued New Orleans tracks from the early years, this package brings together late 60s soul and raw 70s funk – a lesser-known side of Smith's career, and proof that he had plenty of greatness to offer well into the 70s! There's still plenty of heavy Crescent City soul at the bottom of the grooves – but Huey also really takes off in a fast flurry of new styles too – some modes that get increasingly hip on the second half of the collection, as the tunes take on plenty of wonderful 70s funk elements. As with other Charly collections, there's a huge amount of material here – a whopping 45 tracks, packaged in a book-styled cover with a very vivid booklet – and titles that include "Ballad Of A Black Man", "The Whatcha Call Em (ext version)", "Don't You Just Know It", "Funky Funky Football", "High Blood Pressure", "Coo Coo Over You", "You Ain't No Hippie", "Smile For Me", "Twowaypockaway (parts 1 & 2)", "Eight Bars Of Amen", "Epitaph Of Uncle Tom", "Bury Me Dead", "Baby You Hurt Me", "Young Blood", and "We Like Mambo". A strange little soundtrack for an equally strange little film – an offbeat late 60s Italian comedy with music to really match its mood! The set begins with a very cool vocal tune – sung by the rock group Le Pecore Nere, with this onomatopoeic sort of vibe – then the set mixes together the sorts of themes you might hear from American comedies of the era – romping groovy numbers, offset by "serious" numbers that have an undercurrent of whimsy – a great musical way of undercutting dramatic action on the screen in a subtle way! The narrative has the main character moving through different floors of a building, and that's almost the approach of the music too – a different flavor for each level and scene. Nashboro/Third Man, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel recordings from the legendary Nashboro Records – one of the most important imprints for the music back in the 50s and 60s! We rank the work of Nashboro right up with the famous Houston-bred productions of Peacock Records – and as Peacock was part of the secular soul label Duke, Nashboro was also part of the blues powerhouse Excello – which means that the cuts here are put together at a level that's maybe got as much understanding of the needs of the record racks and jukebox scene, as they are aimed at the higher ideals of the lyrics! Nashboro excelled especially in the sorts of small vocal groups that can make gospel singles from this time every bit as much a slice of harmony heavy as rare doo wop tracks – and titles here include "Seven Angels" by The Trumpeteers, "Just One Step" by Little Johnny Jones & The Little Jones Singers, "I Received My Blessing" by Radio Four, "Touch Me Lord Jesus" by Angelic Gospel Singers, "Give Me My Flowers" by The Consolers, "I Would Not Be A Sinner" by Dixie Nightingales, "Jesus Keeps Me Alive" by The Skylarks, "Sit Down Servant" by Swanee Quintet, "When Jesus Stays Home" by Southern Echoes Singers, and "Rest From My Labor" by Supreme Angels. 16 cuts in all – and very nicely done! ✨✧ Beginning Of The EndFunky Nassau ... LP
Alston/Strut (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A monster bit of funk that's unlike anything else we can think of! Beginning Of The End hailed from The Bahamas, but don't hold that against them – because instead of being a Caribbean cliche, they took the best part of the island rhythms, and used them to forge an incredible approach to funk! They've got a choppy sound that's the result of some incredibly dexterous guitar, bass, and drums – and which you'll recognize instantly from their one-time hit "Funky Nassau", a killer funk track that never gets old, no matter how many bands cover it over the years! That gem kicks off the album, which then rolls into the monster funky "part 2", which is even better! Other titles are equally wonderful – and include "Come Down", "Surrey Ride", "Monkey Tamarind", and "In The Deep". Essential – and one that you'll be spinning for years! LP, Vinyl record album
(New vinyl edition – remastered from the original master tapes!)

Dylan's wonderful foray into country rock – the great Nashville Skyline! He takes his voice into a strangely crooning arena that we hadn't heard from him before or since, kinda adding a mysterious vibe of the whole thing. ✨✧ Milton NascimentoClube Da Esquina ... LP
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album from Milton Nascimento – not only a set that really marked his growth as a singer, songwriter, and overall musical visionary – but also a record that really showcased the collaborative spirit that would be a part of his music for years to come! The album features Milton with his "corner club" – an elite group of musicians and songwriters from the early days of his career – including greats like Lo Borges and Wagner Tiso – who'd already contributed to his music, but really get a chance to stand in the spotlight here. Borges is particularly fantastic, and shines on the massively beautiful cut "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", which begins the album – and which is still one of the best Nascimento cuts all these many years later! The sound of the record is impossible to describe adequately – but it's got a fantastically soulful vibe, soaring and joyous, and really expanded through the participation of the other rich talents. The vocals are mixed perfectly, and the songwriting's brilliant all the way through – and titles include "San Vincete", "Lila", "Paisagem Da Janela", "Cravo E Canela", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Os Povos", "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Um Gosto De Sol", and "O Trem Azul". ✨✧ Cal TjaderFried Bananas – Gorgeous Bossanova & Latin Rhythms Of The Brilliant Vibist ... CD
Skye/El (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful little overview of the work that Cal Tjader recorded for the Skye Records label at the end of the 60s – some of his grooviest work ever, and all done with a unique blend of styles that Cal barely ever captured again! The rhythms are often inspired by bossa nova, but usually end up coming across a bit funkier – supported by strong electric bass work, and topped off not just by Cal's sweet solos on vibes, but often by electric piano, organ, or harpsichord! Gary McFarland produced all the tracks, and the tunes have a sweetly spacious quality that's like the best of his own work of the time – but even groovier! Titles include "Amazon", "Here", "Eye Of The Devil", "Fried Bananas", "My Little Red Book", "Walk On By", "The Tra La La Song", "Spooky", and "Get Out Of My Way". CD

✨✧ Beastie BoysHello Nasty ... CD
Grand Royal, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
The 5th album by the Beastie Boys – and a prime example of a modern classic we didn't appreciate enough the first time time around – the wholly excellent Hello Nasty! We'll admit we were suffering a little Beasties fatigue by the time Hello Nasty came out in '98, but it sounds nothing short of masterful all these years later, with classic singles that really kill live, but sound nearly as great blasting through the headphones. Titles include "Super Disco Breakin", "The Move", "Song For The Man", "Just A Test", "Body Movin'", "Intergalactic", "Flowin Prose", "Remote Control", "Three MCs and One DJ", "Song For Junior", "Dr Lee, PhD" feat Lee Scratch Perry, Instant Death and more. 22 tracks in all. ✨✧ Black NastyTalking To The People (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Enterprise/4 Men With Beards, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Excellent heavy funk from Stax! Black Nasty were one of the heaviest groups on the label – with a rock-solid guitar-based groove that went even farther than the Bar-Kays, who were no slouch in the guitar department themselves! The grooves are all slow to midtempo, with the band coming down hard on the downbeats, jamming away in a style that sounds more like heavy Detroit Westbound than sweetly soulful Memphis. Most all cuts have vocals – sung in a shouting style by the band that works well with the tripped-out hooks of the songs. This was the only album the band ever cut, but it's become a fast favorite among those who like their funk raw. Tracks include "We're Doin Our Thing", "Rushin Sea", "Booger The Hooker", "Black Nasty Boogie", "Nasty Soul", and "Getting Funky Round Here". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Per Texas Johansson/Torbjorn Zetterberg/Konrad AgnasOrakel ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful little record – of the sort it feels like the Moserobie label was created to record – jazz that's not totally free or improvised, but which is also doing way more than conventional swing as well – served up by a trio with a perfect sense of creative cohesion! The tunes build in very different ways – sometimes with a slight groove, sometimes more complexity – but never too arch for their own good. Per Texas Johansson is fantastic on both tenor and clarinet – and the always-fantastic work on bass of Torbjorn Zetterberg is completely sublime, and the core element that really holds the whole thing together. (Heck, he's such a hell of a bassist, we're not sure why he's not one of the most recognized musicians on the instrument in the world!) Drums are by Konrad Agnas – who has this loose sense of pulse that really matches the energy of the other players – and titles include "Jankai", "Torbjorn Monk", "Vinteride", "Oraklet Pa Ringvagen", "Blodspredikan", and "Insikt Och Utlopp". Now Again, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary record, but one that's got all the depth, warmth, and complexity of some of our favorites from the 70s – music that more than strongly lives up to the legacy of Egberto Gismonti and Edu Lobo! Fabiano Do Nascimento has a way of mixing acoustic guitar with really compelling arrangements – never too large to drown out his lead, but with complex rhythmic changes and all the right sort of energy that makes the whole thing way more than just another album of acoustic guitar – almost as if you had Baden Powell working with charts from Hermeto Pascoal, to give the whole thing a sense of flow that has the guitar pulling the percussion, the percussion pulling the guitar, and all these great colors and tones letting loose in the process. Titles include "Malandro", "Tributo", "Rio Tapajos", "Partiu", "Mente Azul", "Amanhecer", "Ilhas", and "Preludio Amazonico". CD

Top Tape/Dynamite Cuts (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
Two rare cuts from Brazilian arranger Daniel Salians – both of them all warm and funky! "Atlantis" is also known as "Straussmania" – and for good reason too, as it features the same "2001" theme that was penned by the composer many years back – but served up here in a jazzy electric version that's mighty nice – heavy on Fender Rhodes, but also filled with funkier drums and more complicated rhythms than the Deodato version! "Baiao" has lots more percussion, and a vibe that's maybe more Brazilian overall – but the tune also has some mighty sweet Rhodes, which slide in and out of soaring strings, jazzy flute, and other great touches! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Bill Frisell goes to Nashville – and finds a whole new outlet for his tremendous talents on guitar! The record's definitely got some of the elements you'd expect – some dobro from Jerry Douglas on another of tracks – plus bits of banjo, mandolin, and even some harmonica – but the whole thing is often in a very Frisell-familiar mode, with a sense of color, space and sound – just given a bit of a Nashville pitch! Robin Holcomb sings on three of the album's 14 tracks – and titles include "Family", "Pipe Down", "Go Jake", "One Of These Days", "Brother", "Mr Memory", "Gimme A Holler", "Shucks", and "The End Of The World". Black Saint (Italy), 1980s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A great document of the continuing influence of Charles Mingus in the immediate years after his passing – served up here in a set of Mingus-related groups recording for the Black Saint/Soul Note label! First up is Reincarnation – a very special Mingus Dynasty recording, with a lineup that includes some of the most soulful players from Charles' later group – Ricky Ford on tenor, Richard Williams on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Roland Hanna on piano, Reggie Johnson on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums! Titles include "East Coasting", "Reincarnation Of A Love Bird", "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting", and "Ecclusiatics". Mingus' Sound Of Love is a record that definitely lives up to its title – as alums from the Mingus band work together here in a set of fresh changes on classics from the master - titles that include "Celia", "Ysabel's Table Dance", "Caroline", and "Sue's Changes". Group includes Randy Brecker on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, James Newton and Craig Handy on reeds, and Roland Hanna on piano. Last up are two albums comprising a concert performance – Live At The Theatre Boulogne Billancourt in Paris – with a great Mingus-inspired group that includes David Murray and Clifford Jordan on tenors, John Handy on alto, Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpets, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Jaki Byard on piano! Tracks are quite long – and very much in the Mingus tradition. Four full albums – each in tiny sleeves with the original artwork. CD

✨✧ Milton NascimentoGeraes (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful stuff – and one of Milton Nascimento's greatest albums of the 70s! The style here is a bit more subdued than on some of his later work – but in a way that's really majestic and soulful, showing the further development of Milton's unique idiom as he becomes one of the cornerstones of 70s MPB. There's a sense of power here that's very subtle, but which is pure Nascimento all the way – a maturing approach to both songwriting and singing that are light years from the music of Brazil a decade before. Filled with great material – and includes the tracks "Caldera" and "Circo Marimbondo", both of which have a nice swinging groove, plus "Viver De Amor", "Carro De Boi", "Fazenda", "Volver A Los 17", and "Minas Geraes". CD also features the bonus cuts "Primerio De Maio" and "O Cio Da Terra", which (we think) were only available before as singles! CD
