NWA100 Miles & Runnin' EP ... CD
Priority/Ruthless, 1990. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
The blistering 1990 EP by NWA – a fanbase divisive and critically underappreciated salvo in its day, despite being a fast seller – and a much sharper piece of work than it was credited for back in the day! NWA as a driven singular force was pretty much a thing of the past by this point, with Ice Cube having set off on his own path – turning the lyrical angry into a more interpersonal mode for sure, and also opening new creative production possibilities for Dr. Dre. Includes the masterful title track, which is blistering to this day, plus "Just Don't Bite It", "Sa Prize (Pt 2)", and "Kamurshol" – all of which hold up really strongly. CD

Benchmark west coast gansta – and one of the hardest hitting albums of the era in any genre! We're not gonna lie, we played this record to death when it came out – and it still holds up better than most of the material put out by former NWA's, and most of the West Coast sound-alikes that popped up later. For better and for worse, the start of an era – with undeniable strength and a production style that'll never get old! Features "Straight Outta Compton", "Express Yourself", "Dopeman (rmx)", "I Ain't The One", the title track, "Gangsta Gangsta" and the only record ever condemned by the FBI, "F*ck Tha Police" and more. ✨✧ NWAEfil4zaggin ... CD
Priority, 1991. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stone classic from the west coast scene – and a record that just seems to get better and better over the years! What sounded like a disappointing, and way too calculatedly provocative follow-up to Straight Outta Compton back in 1991 now sounds to us like the peak of Dr. Dre's career as a producer. The wall of sound here is massive – and dare we say it, almost up to par with the Bomb Squad's work with Public Enemy and the expatriate Ice Cube at the time. Plus, with the passing of the years, we can now find a lot more darkly humorous moments in all of the ultra-violent, damn near Clockwork Orange level mischief. Titles include "Real Niggaz Don't Die", "Niggaz 4 Life", "Appetite For Destruction", "Findum, F*ckum, & Flee", and many more. Remastered for the first time, and includes the full 100 Miles & Runnin' EP as bonus cuts. CD

✨✧ Eazy-EEazy-Duz-It (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ruthless/Priority, 1988. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Eazy's first and best LP, from back when he was trying to kid everyone that he was still a teenager. As we all know, Eazy Duz It is a lot more of a companion piece to Straight Outta Compton than a standout solo album by Eazy E, with most the writing credits going to almost everyone involved with NWA EXCEPT Eazy. We all also know that that is a good thing, as the puckish MC was a much better mouthpiece than he was a great thinker. As an instrument of helium voiced anger and bile spewing, Eazy was pretty hard to top in those days (Eminem is Humpty Hump in comparison), and those tight, propulsive beats Dre and co. conjured up in the late 80s will keep our lowriders bouncing until the end of time. Truly a conceptual masterpiece, whether you're comfortable with that or not. Includes "Radio", "Eazy Duz It", "Boyz In The Hood", and "We Want Eazy", and the full 5150 Home 4 Tha Sick EP as bonus cuts. Remastered for the first time since the original release. CD

The solo debut masterpiece from Ice Cube – who links with Bomb Squad for the incredible production! When Ice Cube left NWA he took a lot of the more sobering lyrical aspects of that landmark crew with him, and with the addition of the Bomb Squad's cut & paste rhythms and jackhammer funk, and a bit of new ally Chuck D's social muckraking skills, he created one of the greatest hip hop albums of the 90s. Ice Cube at his solo peak! Features the unbeatable title track, "A Gangsta's Fairytale", "Better Off Dead", "Endangered Species" with Chuck D, "Turn Off The Radio", "Who's The Mack?", "To Come Here", "Once Upon A Time In The Projects" and more. ✨✧ Ice CubeDeath Certificate ... CD
Priority, 1991. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Cube's anger goes full throttle on his second post NWA full-length. He takes every aspect of his social commentator standpoints to another level from his solo debut – the roles of the angry and educated leader, and the finger-pointing blamer each get their say here, and so do those furiously funky Lench Mob beats. One of the last great gangsta era records to be so propulsive and exciting – Dre's Chronic was waiting just around the corner to haze this sound out of the picture for good. Quite tough to find on wax in it's original pressing – finally reissued with the bonus track "How To Survive In South Central". Other tracks include "Givin Up The Nappy Dug Out", "The Funeral", "Wrong Ni**a To –- Wit", "My Summer Vacation", and "Steady Mobbin". CD

Jive/Legacy, 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 21.98
The second album from Too Short, and like the first, a set that firmly established both the Cali scene and the Bay Area as a hotbed of harder-hitting hip hop! And sure, there were countless later gangsta acts that slide into the sorts of cliches that often marred the genre – but back at the start, folks like Too Short, Ice T, and NWA were really exploding with a sense of message that was quite a surprise to anyone whose ears were pointed to the east – really opening the door for countless other scenes to add their two cents – including the big wave that would soon rise from the south. The whole thing still sounds surprisingly fresh all these many years later – and titles include "Life Is Too Short", "I Ain't Trippin", "Nobody Does It Better", "Cuss Words", "City Of Dope", "Don't Fight The Feelin", "Rhymes", and "Pimp The Ho". Smithsonian Folkways, Late 70s/1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 9CDs ... $120.99 159.98
A huge dip into the history of hip hop – in a set that's something of a groundbreaking effort from the folks at the Smithsonian! If we're honest, we'll tell you that we're old enough to remember a time when folks thought that hip hop was just a fad – when it was a musical style that would disappear in just a few short years. But now, all these many decades later, the form has had such an impact on American culture that the Smithsonian Institute is giving it some official sort of due – something we never would have believed back in the 80s! The package is huge – 9CDs with a whopping 129 tracks in all, and a 300 page book that supports the recordings with an insane amount of notes, photos, and all sorts of other information – alongside a track list that was put together by folks who include Questlove, 9th Wonder, Chuck D, Jeff Chang, and MC Lyte! The set is especially great on old school tracks up through the golden era hip hop years – but also moves into the 21st century too – and artists include Treacherous Three, Afrika Bambaataa, Fearless Four, Cold Crush Brothers, Herbie Hancock, Run DMC, Fatback, Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Funky Four +1, T La Rock, Schoolly D, Beastie Boys, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, Eric B & Rakim, Mantronix, Stetsasonic, Audio Two, Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, Marley Marl, Tone Loc, Jungle Brothers, NWA, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, 3rd Bass, De La Soul, Queen Latifa, DOC, 2 Live Crew, Dr Dre, Sir Mix A Lot, Digable Planets, Positive K, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Naughty By Nature, Black Sheep, Tribe Called Quest, Geto Boys, Pharcyde, 2Pac, Warren G, Gang Starr, Notorious BIG, and many many more! Pivotal west coast rap from Compton's Most Wanted! NWA cast such a long shadow in the late 80s, especially in the nascent gangsta rap and G Funk scenes, it was tough for top shelf peers and followers to get their due, but CMW deliver the goods and this record stands the test of time! Production by LA old school-er the Unknown DJ and CMW's DJ Slip give this set a nice stripped down west coast sound, with MC Eiht holding up his own end of things (and taking up the slack for the Chill MC) on the mic. 11 tracks in all, including "It's A Compton Thang", "One Time Gaffled Em", "This Is Compton", "Late Night Hype", "Duck Sick", "I'm Wit Dat" and "Rhymes Too Funky Pt 1 (Live at Lonzo's 1988)". A nice mix of older highlife modes with some of the more electric touches of the 80s – still produced with a nice lean vibe overall, and plenty of live energy that leaps between the riffing guitar, percussion, and horns – all augmented by these nicely quirky lines on keyboards! The group sports the great Ray Stephen Oche on trumpet and John Kante on guitars – and Nkem Njoku stands up strongly with vocals in the lead, really shining with rhythmic vocals that are fit nicely to the groove – at a level that makes us wonder why this is his only album as a leader. The whole thing's a real surprise from the Polish scene of the 70s – with production that almost has some sunny Cali touches, and an approach that's different than some of the heavier, proggier work of the period. Cosmic righteousness from Brother Ahh – an enigmatic musician who worked briefly with Sun Ra, and continued an exploration of the sonic heavens on his own! This rare 1975 album features Ahh's Sound Awareness ensemble – a 25 piece group that features a host of voices set to percussion, flutes, and other intimate and evocative instrumentation. The feel's quite hard to describe – kind of a cross between Sun Ra and Moondog, with the righteous style of vocalization that you might find on some of the Max Roach experiments with voices, recorded in the relaxed and expressive style of the early AACM – all of which means it's a great little record, with a very striking approach! Slow, spare, almost sad-tinged work from Michael Rother – a set that's kind of a distillation of his longer krautrock legacy into a subtle, minimal mode! The tunes are all instrumentals, with these beautifully-placed guitar lines, keyboard parts, and other sonic touches – very much in the territory that Roedelius and Moebius were exploring on Sky Records during the same stretch – a step back and cool down from the more excessive moments in the earlier German scene! Steven BlushNew York Rock – From The Rise Of The Velvet Underground To The Fall Of CBGB ... Book
St Martins, 2016. New Copy ... $7.99 34.99
That's quite a cover photo on the book – and the interweaving of key talents in the image really gets at the style of the narrative within! Author Steven Blush delivers a decidedly one-sided document of the New York scene from the late 60s onward – a picture of countless creative musicians, working alongside each other to create sounds that would go onto transform a generation – often in ways that were strongly inspired by the city itself. The book is less of a long story, than a history that encapsulates moments, focuses on figures – and even lays out groups in some index-styled passages – showing their strengths and weaknesses, and often augmenting the text with countless comments from singers and musicians who were part of the scene. In a manner similar to other rock books in recent years, Blush allows plenty of space for other folks' voices – sometimes almost making the whole thing feel like an oral history of the New York scene, but one that's directed by his own choices and sense of structure. The softcover book is almost 500 pages long, and has a fair bit of black and white photos too. Book

The set does a great job of spanning the 70s – and includes the single-only "John I'm Only Dancing (Again)" – which is a clubbier take on the earlier song that was showcased on Changes One. Other tracks run from the Ziggy years onward – and include another great single, Bowie's take on "Oh You Pretty Things" – which was more famously recorded by Mott The Hoople, although written by Bowie – plus "Aladdin Sane", "Starman", "1984", "Ashes To Ashes", "Sound & Vision", "Fashion", "Wild Is The Wind", and "DJ". Expansion (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
The deepest, most righteous music we've ever heard from Sheree Brown – and that's saying a lot, given how much we loved her first few solo records back in the day! Brown's got this rich vision here that really makes for a hell of a record – a set of tracks inspired by her younger years, but which are getting a mature handling here – with vocals that are maybe more heartfelt than in years, and set to arrangements that take all the warm, jazzy currents of Sheree's roots, and mix them with contributions that change up nicely from track to track – really fleshing out the spirit of the music as the album moves on. The lyrics are wonderfully uplifting – and titles include "Can I Leave Next Friday", "I Wanna Thank You Love", "Beautiful Girl", "Get Up Stand", "Take A Walk With Love", "Sorry Bout Bein A Ghost", and a remake of the Minnie Riperton classic "Les Fleur". Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Some of the most beautiful work ever recorded by pianist Dave Burrell – a solo session issued only in Japan, featuring Burrell on a Steinway recorded in the wide open space of a performance hall in Tokyo! There's a photo on the back cover that has a pair of suitcases behind Burrell at the piano – and we like to think that he showed up in the space, dropped the bags, and ran over to the piano to let loose with the kind of inspired imagination he really brings to the set – as the long tracks have this boundless sense of creativity that marks the record as one of the strongest statements of Burrell's genius on record! Some moments are rhythmic, others are freer yet still have a sense of cohesion – and there's a balance here between structure and space that's really wonderful. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Margy Pargy", "8th Ave Rendez Vouz Blues", and "Lush Life". CD

Donald Byrd & The BlackbyrdsJazz Funk Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing tribute to some of the greatest jazz funk of the 70s – the groundbreaking work of trumpeter Donald Byrd, both as a solo act on his own, and as the inspiration for the mighty Blackbyrds group – both of whom are featured on this set! Byrd first broke into new territory in the early 70s with a string of amazing records on Blue Note – all done with help from genius producer Larry Mizell, who helped Byrd's trumpet find a way to groove in an electric space, but at a level that was very different (and a lot more soulful) than any sort of Miles Davis electric modes! This work quickly inspired a young group at Howard University, who chose the name Blackbyrds as a nod to Donald – who quickly became their mentor and producer, and helped them forge a great blend of jazz and funk before they took off on their own. This set features 39 tracks from both artists, illustrating a fantastic partnership and shared musical inspiration – with work from Byrd's Blue Note and Wea albums, and all the great Blackbyrds records for Fantasy in the 70s. Titles include Donald Byrd tracks "Dominoes", "Black Byrd", "Lansana's Priestess", "Wind Parade", "Flying High", "Thank You For Funking Up My Life", "Onward Til Morning", "Dance Band", "Science Funktion", "Dominoes", "Flight Time", "Witch Hunt", "Stepping Into Tomorrow", "Sexy Dancer (12" mix)", "Star Trippin (12" mix)", "Pretty Baby", "Giving It Up", and "Dancing In The Street". Blackbyrds cuts include "Blackbyrd's Theme", "Do It Fluid", "Flying High", "Cornbread", "Time Is Movin", "Happy Music", "Rock Creek Park", "Walkin In Rhythm", "Lookin Ahead", "Street Games", "Gut Level", "Party Land", and "Supernatural Feeling". Ed CherrySoul Tree ... CD
Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A killer guitar and Hammond session with a really sublime sort of sound – a groove that's wonderfully free of cliche – and which has an open, spacious quality that few artists can match! Given the instrumentation, the album's steeped in tradition, but never tries to just rehash an older Prestige Records vibe – and instead guitarist Ed Cherry and organist Kyle Koehler find a way of soaring out in their own spirits – opening up strongly in a bass-less trio that only features the drums of Anwar Marshall to keep things snapping along. The pairing is perfect – on the level of Grant Green with Larry Young, or Pat Martino with Don Patterson – yet very much with its own spirit, too. Cherry's arrangements are great, too – providing very fresh takes on familiar tunes, alongside his own compositions. Titles include "Central Park West", "A New Blue", "Rachel's Step", "Ode To Angela", "Little Sunflower", "Little Girl Big Girl", and "Peace". CD

Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 29.99
Two rare albums from Uncle Victor Chukwu – a hell of a guitarist, and the driving force behind both of these Nigerian gems from the late 70s! Akalaka is a record that's maybe higlife in outward appearance, but which has a very different quality overall – in part because the guitar work from Victor Chukwu is so sharp and searing, there's often a bit more edge on some of the tunes than the lighter, brighter notes you'd usually associate with the genre! Plus, the vocals have this nicely echoey vibe – ringing out with a quality that's equally great, whether the lyrics are in English or Igbo – on long titles that include "Akalaka", "Born Throw Away", "Ogbu Mmadu", and "Nwanne Bu Nwanne". Next up is an album that Victor Chukwu did with the Black Irokos group – a set that's even more striking, and almost experimental at times – with all these odd elements played right down near the bottom of the guitar strings, which are then echoed out with effects that make them sound very cool next to the percussion! There's a bit of horns in the mix, but the guitar and offbeat vocals are the main appeal – on the long tracks "Onwu Uwa", "Anya Ukwu", and "Oge Chukwu Ka Nma". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CountsWhat's Up Front That Counts (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Westbound/Ace (UK), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the funkiest album ever cut for the legendary Westbound label in Detroit – and that's saying a lot, given that the company was the initial home to Funkadelic! Yet on this stunning full length set, The Counts maybe do that famous group one better – pushing aside their vocals for some incredible instrumental interplay that comes from bumping Hammond lines, wickedly sharp drums, and non-stop riffing guitars – all of which take center stage, while the vocals only seem to be part of the mix to urge the instruments onward! Tracks are long and jamming – ala the early Westbound work from George Clinton – and although The Counts recorded before and after the space of this album, this set is definitely the group's masterpiece. Titles include "What's Up Front That Counts", "Rhythm Changes", "Thinking Single", "Why Not Start All Over Again", "Bills", and "Pack Of Lies". CD features two bonus tracks – "Motor City" and "What's It All About". CD

Curren$y and production partner Harry Fraud, outrunning a lot of their peers, even on relatively low key sets like Outrunners – with Curren$y's laidback flow in as fine of form as ever – and Fraud's production honestly rock solid track for track! The set is filler free and faultless, head nodding craft all the way, with just enough from for some solid guest spots by Wiz Khalifa, Rick Ross, Conway The Machine and Jim Jones. Includes the title track, "Cutlass Cathedrals", "90 IROC-3" feat Wiz Khalifa, "Riviera Beach" with Conway The Machine, "Gold & Chrome" with Rick Ross, "Mugello Road", "Seven Seas", "In The Coupe" with Jim Jones and "Pounds Of Paper". Grapefruit (UK), 1971/2021. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
A lost legacy of a very obscure psychedelic group – the mysterious Mr Time, who cut one classic album for Square Records at the start of the 70s – then disappeared for years, before reforming more recently, and giving the world some more wonderful music! The set begins with the group's classic album Grandfather – a pure gem that really matches some of the most creatively produced work of the period – hard rock echoes at times, but maybe a late psych sort of mix of fuzz and more sophisticated ideas – served up on these really beautiful tunes that come together to make a unified theme for the entire record! The album's billed as a comment on the life of one man from his birth at the start of the 20th Century to the time of his death – with titles that include "Light Up A Light", "On A Lonely Night", "Years & Fortunes", "A Dawning Moonshine", "Your Country Needs You", and "Make Your Peace". The set also features 13 more bonus tracks around the same time – demos recorded before the album, with lots of different songs – then the whole thing goes on to features the full albums Brontosaurs & Bling, and Time – both recorded by the reformed group from 2015 onward. There's more bonus material too – the box is a massive 65 tracks in all – and the whole thing comes with a big booklet of notes. CD

✨✧ DellsLike It Is – Like It Was ... LP
Cadet, 1970. Very Good+ ... $9.99
An incredible combination of the two sides of The Dells – a set that has them presenting older tracks and newer material – all with sublime arrangements from the fantastic Charles Stepney, who'd really been transforming their sound from the There Is album onward! Stepney brings in a wonderful blend of funk and strings – similar to the modes he was using with Ramsey Lewis and Rotary Connection – and The Dells respond wonderfully by really setting their vocals free – soaring to the skies with the kind of tremendous harmonies that have always made them one of our favorite soul groups of all time – and also mighty proud that we came up in the same Windy City scene as them! Even the older material sounds very hip in this context – and titles include "Nadine", "Darling Dear", "Come Out Come Out", "Off Shore", "Open Up My Heart", "Oh, What A Day", "Long Lonely Nights", and "I'm Not Afraid Of Tomorrow". Sam DillonForce Field ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A smoking little set from tenorist Sam Dillon – a musician who's really coming into his own as a leader, after a number of years working in the ensembles of others! Sam's got this nice bite on his reed – which makes for a sharp tone on the numbers here that feature just a quartet, and creates even more fire when Sam adds in a few other horns to the mix – which he does on tracks here that feature extra work from Michael Dease on trombone, Max Darche on trumpet, and Andrew Gould on alto. There's a cascading sense of colors on the numbers with added horns that we really love – but Dillon also balances things out with his own rich voice on the quartet numbers – which feature work from Theo Hill on piano and Fender Rhodes, David Wong on bass, and Anwar Marshall on drums. Titles include "Shift", "Two Part Problem", "Flight Of Mind", "Force Field", "Go For The Jugular", and "Straight Up & Down". CD

Earth Wind & FireElectric Universe ... LP
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
The title's no joke, as Earth Wind & Fire are definitely part of the electric universe of early 80s Columbia Records – the galaxy that also includes Herbie Hancock during his electro years! As a result, there's a lot more keyboards and electric rhythms in the set than before – a new setting for the still-positive expressions of the group – one that works especially well on the mellower cuts! These really have the group opening up their best ballad modes – stretching out to crossover nicely, yet still with a quality level that's head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries. Of course, the sweet vocals of Philip Bailey really help put over some of the best cuts too! Titles include "Moonwalk", "Touch", "Could It Be Right", "Sweet Sassy Lady", "Spirit Of A New World", and "We're Living In Our Own Time". LP, Vinyl record album

A bold vision for a better version of our nation – served up here by percussionist Kahil El Zabar, but in a mode that also has him working as the conductor of a larger ensemble too! The record has all the sense of pride, power, and optimism of some of the best sessions of this type from the 80s – that feeling that music can actually effect change, especially in the hands of artists like this – a very strong ensemble that features work from Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Tomeka Reid on cello, Josh Ramos on bass, Samuel Williams on violin, and Dennis Winslett on alto sax! The record still has a sense of groove that you'd know from Kahil's smaller group records – imagine a Ritual Trio sense of rhythm with augmented elements – and the set mixes a few well-chosen covers with great originals. The set is dedicated to Bluiette – it was his last recording – and titles include "Prayers For The Unwarranted Sufferings", "Sketches Of An Afro Blue", "Express Yourself", "Freedom March", "That We Ask Of Our Creator", and "How Can We Mend A Broken Heart". Bill EvansAnother Time – The Hilversum Concert ... CD
Resonance, 1968. Used ... $14.99
Amazing work from one of the most inventive trios ever led by pianist Bill Evans – a fantastic group that features the young Eddie Gomez on bass and the mighty Jack DeJohnette on drums! Both players would develop into strong leaders of their own in later years – but here, on this unreleased material from 1968, it's amazing to hear them already shaping sounds with a new sense of freedom – that mixture of complexity and lyricism that Bill brought to his groups from the end of the 50s onwards – delivered here in the hands of musicians who'd both take that spirit, and run with it even more strongly in years to come. Gomez is no stranger to Evans, and had already recorded often with his piano – one of the most sublime pairings of the 60s – but DeJohnette really brings something special to the group – maybe more of a special sonic range at times that allows him to stand out, yet never distract. As with other Resonance releases of this nature, the material is issued for the first time ever – beautifully produced by Dutch radio in June of 1968, and presented here as an extended set with tracks that include "Very Early", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Five", "Turn Out The Stars", "Nardis", "Emily", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Alfie". Smoke Sessions, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
We love the music of pianist Orrin Evans in many different ways – but we especially love the sounds he makes with his Captain Black Big Band – a really tremendous ensemble that seems to unlock a whole new dynamic energy in his performance! The group here is heavy on horns – two trumpets, two trombones, alto and tenor – shifting a bit throughout the concert here, and really rising wonderfully from the energy that Evans brings on piano! Orrin's sense of sound is beautiful – bold, rich, and visionary – while also still allowing plenty of room for the individual players to really do their thing – as the long tracks here are awash in great solos that have as much power on their own as the ensemble. Rhythm is from Madison Rast on bass and either Anwar Marshall or Jason Brown on drums – and titles include "Trams", "Flip The Script", "Onward", "Question", "The Scythe", and "Answer". CD

Knitting Factory, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
An early classic from Fela Kuti & Africa 70 – the kind of early 70s record that helped both the leader and the group establish themselves as a global powerhouse of funk and soul! The set begins with the side-long "Open & Close" – a righteous tune that's driven onward by lots of tight drums from Tony Allen – young, focused, and completely amazing here – while Fela delivers all these madly leaping electric piano lines amidst the super-sharp horn section – all moving instrumentally for many minutes before the vocals come into play! Side two features two shorter tracks, but still nice and long in comparison to most funky groups – the wonderful "Swegbe & Pako" and "Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo" – tunes that really send the record over the top! Brutkasten/Long Hair (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About November 20, 2021
An all-instrumental album from this lost German group of the late 70s – a combo who are definitely rock, but who play with some of the freer, more open modes of a jazz group too – maybe working here in a style that could be called prog fusion, or fusion prog! The lineup features work on flute, saxes, and trombone – mixed with some very cool organ and other keyboard work – used in ways that create all these spacey, snakey tones that lead the horns onward into the mix – while some of the core energy from the guitar, bass, and drums keeps things firmly grounded on the planet! This can maybe be heard to best effect on the very cool, almost funky title track "Im Tal Der Emmen" – and other titles include "Schubi Dubi Kong", "Ich Bin Der Postillion D'Amour Aber Meine Uhr Geht Vuur", "Der Don Juan Hat Seine Turnschuh An" and "Uck Zuruckspulen". Etta James on stage at the Montreux jazz festival – mostly captured in a lean, live setting that recalls some of her club work of previous decades, but with some of the more blues-based modes that Etta was bringing to her studio records in later years! A number of the tracks here are familiar – remakes of cuts from the Chess Records years, or Jones taking on work by other artists too – still graced with that wonderful vocal style that made her a strongly soulful talent from her young years onwards. The set features work from a number of different performances – a few from the late 70s, one from 1989, and a few more from the early 90s – the latter of which have backing from The Roots Band, while earlier sets have Etta working with some surprising guests – including Rick Wakeman on keyboards, David Newman on saxes, and Cash McCall on guitar. Katalyst, 2018. Used ... $8.99
A beautiful set of spiritual jazz from South Africa – recorded recently, but very much in the same soulful tradition of the best of that scene from the early 70s onward! The tracks are long, flowing, and open – set up in a fantastic way by the rich, round work of the bass of Benjamin Jephte – and given spacious warmth through the talents of Marcus Wyatt on trumpet, Kyle Shepherd on piano and Rhodes, Sisonke Xonti on tenor, and Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums – a really great lineup who resonate beautifully with each other! Spha Mdlalose provides these beautiful wordless vocal passages at times, and other members of the group vocalize briefly – but our favorite "voices" on the album may well be the tenor and piano parts. If you know some of Wyatt's excellent work for the Sheer Sound label years back, you'll know some of the energy of this set – and titles include "Hymn For Ada", "The Blessing", "Requiem For The Wandering", "Be Strong", "Still I Rise", and "One For The Plein". Jneiro Jarel has always been way more than just a hip hop producer – even his earliest records were a bit hard to peg, and this excellent set not only pushes that bar forward a heck of a lot, but it also firmly suits the album's placement on the Far Out label! Far Out's best known for its recordings of Brazilian music – and there's some surprising currents of that scene here – amidst funkier bits, spacier sounds, and this wonderful weaving of so many different elements, both acoustic and electric – all done without any sort of gimmick, or that style that others might have – of hiding their real skills or ideas behind to much front-end production. Instead, Jneiro really lets things flow at an organic level – and opens the door along the way for guests who include Jarel Gilyard, Capital Peoples, Mel Owens, Bill Summers, and Dr Who Dat. Percussion and acoustic elements are more important here than some of the previous hip hop touches – and there's a cosmic vibe to the record that's very much in keeping with its cover. Titles include "Africa Bahia Sol", "If I Could See Heaven Without Dying", "Ce Les Tial", "Sunwakers (parts 2 & 3)", "Let The Cuica Play", and "Broken Arted". CD

A much-needed slice of work from Juju – the group who later transformed into spiritual funk ensemble Oneness Of Juju! Juju only recorded two full albums in the early 70s, so this unissued live set is a key addition to their catalog – and the whole thing's got this bold quality that's much more jazz-based, and often more avant than the group's later work – more in line with work in the tradition of the AACM, or some of the earliest loft jazz talents. No surprise, the set was recorded at Ornette Coleman's space on the lower east side in the early 70s – with the mighty Plunky Nakbinde on saxes and flute, sounding a lot more searing than any of his records from the 80s onward – plus Babatunde on percussion, Lon Moshe on vibes and flute, and Al-Hammel Rasul on keyboards. A really unique project from the end of the 70s – a set that takes some of the Afro Funk energy that was bubbling in West Africa during the decade, then mixes it with some funky jazz touches arranged by the great William S Fischer! The mix of cultures comes out perfectly – with no forced for fake modes at all – as Aleke Kanonu plays lots of percussion and sings in a variety of languages – alongside a group that features Bad Bascomb on bass, Milt Ward on trumpet, George Davis on guitar, Earl McIntyre on trombone, and Fischer on tenor, organ, and a host of keyboards! Bascomb's basslines are great – and really hold the whole record together at the bottom – with a bad-stepping jazz funk core that allows Aleke plenty of freedom in his performance, on long tracks that stretch out with a hell of a lot of creativity and warmly collaborative energy. The prisoners are often given space to tell their own stories, which is great – as it makes the book very different than just some gritty scopophilic presentation of the material – and the juxtaposition of portraiture and prison landscape really illuminates the setting too. A massive set of fusion from Mahavishnu Orchestra – a group that features some incredible guitar work from John McLaughlin, who sounds even more focused and driven here than on his own records! As with Return To Forever or Weather Report, the combo's a supergroup of sorts – with Billy Cobham on drums, Jan Hammer on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on violin, and Rick Laird on bass – all wailing with great intensity on some of the best numbers – a lot more energy than you might expect from their slightly more meditative name! Titles include "Meeting Of The Spirits", "Dawn", "The Noonward Race", "A Lotus On Irish Streams", and "Vital Transformation". CD

Akira ObuchiGangsta Rap Disc Guide – Lyrics Focus On Thug & Gangsta Life ... Book
Ele-King (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $29.99
A special sort of Japanese disc guide – one that focuses on the key recordings in gangsta rap from the 80s onward – served up here in the usual format of these publications! As you might guess, the text is all in Japanese – but the book is filled with hundreds of album covers, along with artist, title, label, and release date all in English – so that even if you can't read the language, you can still understand the contents! There's a huge amount of titles in here that go way past the big hits and the obvious – and the book is laid out geographically, then chronologically – which makes for a great way to group these records together. Images are full color throughout, and there's some nice bonus pages of record covers too – and the book is 192 pages, softcover. And hey, if you use Google translate, you might be able to read some of the Japanese text too! Book

Professor LonghairBach Of Rock ... CD
Sunset Blvd, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 26.99
Mighty nice work from the great Professor Longhair – live material recorded in the late 70s, presented here without much in the way of notes – but with a musical quality that more than makes up for that lack of information! The Professor was a key figure in the New Orleans music scene from the postwar years onward – a pianist and singer whose sound really helped pave the way for a new generation of Crescent City soul – and even here, in the late 70s, there's a very timeless, formative sound to his style – a raw groove that really gets to the essence of the sound of Nola, with tight work on piano, and plenty of the Professor's raspy, often witty vocals! Titles include "Bald Head", "Boyd's Bounce", "Big Chief", "Mardi Gras In New Orleans", "Tell Me Pretty Baby", "Mess Around", "I'm Movin On", "Junko Partner", "Her Mind Is Gone", "Rum & Coca Cola", "She Walked Right In", and "Stompin With Fess". A long-overdue second set from Quakers – and a set that's got even more intensity than their debut! Beats are by the core trio of Supa K (Katalyst), 7STU7, and Fuzzface (Geoff Barrow) – and there's a very old school vibe to most of the record – a focus on core elements on each track, with a nicely booming spirit that really sets fires to the lyrical contributions from a lineup that includes Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, Koreatown Oddity, Black Opera, Cysion, Bob Banner, Jeru The Damaja, YC, Super Vic, Jonwayne, and many others – flowing with more than enough sound to make you feel like you're not only hearing the next wave, but also finding a way to bring the past forward. Sun RaIn Some Far Place – Roma 77 (180 gram pressing with bonus CD) ... LP
Strut (UK), 1977. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
Sun Ra made some really wonderful music in Rome during the year 1977 – heard most famously on his albums for the Horo Records label, and now on this unreleased session from the time! The album features Ra at his straightest, and most soulful – playing piano and other keyboards with just the drums of Luqman Ali for accompaniment – yet in a way that hardly makes us miss the fuller Arkestra sound at all! The music is incredible – free at some points, but also filled with a trans-historical sense of jazz that reminds us of Ra's longer legacy in music from the 30s onward – which seems to then make his work here on organ and electronics even more stunning! There's a bit of vocals on the set – some from Ra, but some from singer Thomas Thaddeus – and titles include "Ladybird/Half Nelson", "Trying To Put The Blame On Me", "Untitled 1", "Spontaneous Simplicity", "Space Is The Place", "I Cover The Waterfront", "How Am I To Know", and "Love In Outer Space". Really beautiful work – all studio sides, and quite different than other Ra recordings you might know. LP, Vinyl record album

Biff RoseHalf Live At The Bitter End ... LP
Buddah, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
A really striking live set from singer/songwriter Biff Rose – a real contrast to his better-known record on Tetragrammaton – thanks to a loose and free presentation of the material! Biff's talking here as much, if not more than, he's singing – and the audience at The Bitter End is clearly very much enjoying the whole experience – exploding with laughter at Biff's interjections, and really urging him onward to new tangents. Plus, there's clearly some editing done here – in a way that only further makes the whole thing seem a bit crazy – but in a good way, very Rose-esque! Titles include "Astrology", "I Get High On Resentment", "Well I'm Goin Downtown", "I'm Losing My Race Against Me", and "Me You & Jesus". LP, Vinyl record album

SF Jazz, 2010. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99 35.00
The songs of Horace Silver never grow old – they've had a special sort of soulful energy from the early Blue Note years onward – really kept alive here in a set of great performances by this all-star group, who also mix in some excellent originals of their own! The lineup is rock-solid – an octet, but one who swings with the dexterity of a quartet – thanks to the skills of Miguel Zenon on alto, Mark Turner on tenor, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Stefon Harris on vibes, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Edward Simon on piano, Matt Penman on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. The vibes are a great addition to the Horace Silver sound – as the group make their way through versions of "Cape Verdean Blues", "Sister Sadie", "Peace", "Song For My Father", "Senor Blues", "The Lady From Johannesburg", and "Baghdad Blues" - plus originals that include "Triple Threat", "Collective Presence", "More Than Meets The Ear", and "Harlandia". Pat ThomasDid It – From Yippie To Yuppie – Jerry Rubin An American Revolutionary (hardcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 49.99
A surprisingly beautiful book on the famous 60s radical Jerry Rubin – one that's not only the first-ever look at the man's life, politics, and influence – but one that's also presented in a lavishly visual style that really conveys the crossroads of art and ideas of which Rubin was a key part! The book is even better than Pat Thomas' previous book, Listen Whitey – and has the same heavily visual feel as that one – as words from Rubin and his contemporaries are mixed with larger historical information, an incredible amount of cultural sidebars – and hundreds of fantastic images from the 60s onwards. Rubin's known as one of the founding fathers of the yippies – the Youth International Party, which gave political focus to the freedoms of hippies, and was a key part of the protests in Chicago in 1968. But the man's also had a much larger, even more colorful life – and this book really gets at all of that, and then some – one of those rare cases where you pick up a book on someone, and actually find yourself far more illuminated than before – both in terms of the subject, and their larger cultural role. 253 very vivid pages, hardcover, and done in the best Fantagraphics style. Don't be put off by the late date of the session, because this is an excellent album from McCoy Tyner – and one with a very spiritual groove that's clearly inherited from Coltrane! The album's based around longer compositions arranged by Tyner, and orchestrated by the great William S Fischer – with lead solos by Hubert Laws on flutes and McCoy on piano, over soaring searching backings that push onward with the same kind of soulful sound as some of Tyner's earlier Blue Note albums. Townes revisiting his own time-honored tunes from the late 60s onward, often backed by just a second guitar or fiddle, spare settings that maximize the stark power of his songwriting and voice! The voice is really the key here, distinctive in both the songwriting – with some of the most effective story songs about lost souls and wayward love in the modern folk or country canon – and in performance, here sounding as clear and soulful as ever, and in much stronger form than we remembered! Ray VernonAll Wrays Lead To Rock – The Link Wray Connection ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
That's Ray Vernon, not Vernon Wray – but both names are correct, as Ray's the brother of guitar giant Link Wray – and works here under an odd variation of his family name, but on an equally raw set of vintage rockers! Ray's a singer, but also a guitarist – and brother Link joins in on a number of these tracks with the kind of moody raw twang that made his famous instrumentals so great – as both of the brothers move through a surprisingly rich array of indie singles from the end of the 50s and start of the 60s – shifting in contributions, so that one track might have the guitar right up in the mix, another might have a vocal. There's a whopping 34 tracks in all – and detailed notes that unlock the mystery of these tunes – material that includes "Hold It", "Big City After Dark", "Evil Angel", "Vendetta", "Danger One Way Love", "I'm Countin On You", and "Roughshod" by Ray Vernon with The Raymen – plus "Teenage Cutie" by Lucky Wray, "Flirty Baby" by The Wraymen, "You Can't Make Me Doubt My Baby" by Bunker Hill, "A Brand New Love" by The American Teens, "So Young" by The Dial Tones, "Watch Yourself" by The British Walkers, "Boo Hoo" by Marvin Rainwater, and the cuts "Window Shopping", "I'll Be So Good To You", and "The Freeze" by Link Wray. David Wertman Sun EnsembleEarthly Delights ... LP
Sweet Earth/BBE (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A classic of 70s avant spiritual jazz – issued on the tiny Sweet Earth label, which was also home to some very special records from Sun Ra and Marion Brown! Bassist David Wertman is a lot more obscure than those bigger names, but he was part of the New York loft jazz scene in those crucial mid 70s years – and had associations with Arthur Blythe, Billy Bang, Steve Reid, and other key members of the group – all heavyweights that Wertman can easily stand next to with the strength of the material on this set! The sounds here are a fantastic combination of larger ideas and more spontaneous creation – almost in an AACM mode, but a bit more spiritual overall – with David's bass at the helm of a group that includes David Swerdlove on alto and soprano sax, John Hagen on tenor and soprano, John Sprague on flutes, Greg Wall on baritone, and John Zieman on keyboards. Drummer Jay Conway really provides some great energy to keep things lively and moving – and titles include "Oh John Love Trane", "Clear Air Dancer", "Earthly Delights", and "Relations". Lloyd Ziff has a great eye for the city of New York – one that's presented here in dozens of photographs from the late 60s onward, all offering up a vision for the city that's surprising unified over the decade! At some points, Ziff is a "moment" photographer – capturing a special spot in time and place, often where an individual is juxtaposed with a landscape – but at other points, Ziff's eye is more spacious, and brings together many elements at once – and both modes really capture the dynamic energy of New York, but in a way that's far from cliche or overdone Big Apple hoke. The oversized book is 104 pages, and includes almost as many photographs – on heavy paper stock, in color and black and white, in a hardcover edition. Book

✨✧ VariousAfrica Boogaloo – The Latinization Of West Africa ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
A long-overdue collection of work – one that really gets at the unusual appearance of Latin rhythms on the African scene of the postwar years! Latin sounds from Africa are nothing new, but they're one of those things that's always taken for granted, too – kind of assumed in most discussions of the rhythms from the 60s onward, but never explained as fully as might be needed! Given the already-great grooves going down on the continent for generations, it's surprising that African musicians might pick up styles from Cuba and the Caribbean – yet due to the vagaries of global cultural circulation, that's exactly what happened – and the music has never been the same ever since. This really well-done package offers up a range of tracks from the 50s through the 70s – showing some of the earliest African extrapolations of Latin styles – clearly enforcing the "Afro" in Afro-Cuban rhythms – then moving onto some later grooves that offer up some funkier styles too. The work's a bridge between the ethnographic sets on Honest Jons, and some of the tighter grooves you might find on a Soul Jazz collection – a wonderful blend of music, packaged beautifully too. Titles include "A Moins Que Namikosa" by Orchestra OK Jazz, "Rampa Rampa" by Orchestre Yaya Mas, "Quiero Wapacha" by Charles Lembe, "Ven Y Ven Y Ven" by Orchestre OK Jazz, "Vamos A Bailar" by Rio Band, "Guantanamo" by Laba Sosseh, "On Verra Ca" by Orchestre Baobab, "Mi Guajeo" by Orchestre N'Guewel, "N'Niyo" by Amara Toure, "Il N'Est Jamais Trop Tard" by Pierre Tchana & Orchestre Poly Rhythmo, "Africa Boogaloo" by Le Grande Kalle with Don Gonzalo & Manu Dibango, and "Adigbedoto" by Gnonnas Pedro. Grapefruit (UK), 1972. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
A glorious assortment of Brit rock gems from 1972 – music that really shows the increasing sophistication of the scene at the time – and a strong move away from the sorts of pop tracks that previously dominated the charts! A few years before, much of this music would have been relegated to the underground cognoscenti – but the tunes here represent a great outpouring of new appreciation for the growth in sounds and styles that had taken place from the late 60s onward – a mode that's only partly prog, as the "progressive" in the title here is taken to be a kind of freer-thinking, more mature approach that really comes through in the well-chosen blend of cuts on the set. There's a whopping 65 tracks in the package – supported by very detailed notes that provide a track-by-track journey in music – really enhancing our enjoyment of cuts by Roy Wood, Free, Clown, Family, Tuesday, Roxy Music, Yes, Medicine Head, Thin Lizzy, Status Quo, Hello, Caravan, Nirvana, The Move, Byzantium, Strawbs, Argent, Bonzo Dog Band, Bombadil, Hobbit, Mike Hugg, Pluto, Jake, Patto, Nimbo, Bond & Brown, and many others. Here's a state-based legacy we never really knew about – save maybe for the odd Bob Wills' song or two – a huge batch of postwar material laid out in tribute to the Sooner State – the nearby cousin of Texas that often gets short shrift in American pop culture! Discos Machuca/Analog Africa (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
The amazing legacy of a tiny Colombian record label – a small imprint, but a groundbreaking one as well – with a rich variety of sounds that you'll hear on this really wonderful collection! Discos Machuca was based in Barranquilla, a real crossroads of cultures, sounds, and styles – and the label balanced both conventional styles like vallenato and cumbia with more experimental, psychedelic productions – including localized variations on 70s African styles that really sound amazing! There's so much going on in this music – from offbeat instrumentation to very unusual production styles – often these weird little touches that can abstract the electric elements in the music while keeping the acoustic bits straight on the groove – with a mixture of both modes often influencing the vocals. Analog Africa really knock it out of the park with this one – and not only give us these sounds that we'd never hear otherwise, but also present the very vivid history of the label – in a huge package of tracks that includes "Monkey's Dance" by King Somalie, "Mosquita Muerta" by La Francachela, "Ayu" by Rito Latino, "Tamba" by El Grupo Folclorico, "Te Clavo La Mano" by La Banda Africana, "Wabali" by Conjunto Barbacoa, "A Otra Perro Con Ese Hueso" by El Grupo D'Abelard, "Caracol" by Grupo Bola Roja, "El Platano" by Myrian Makenwa, and "Long Live Africa" by Samba Negra. A amazing look at the British indie scene during one of its greatest stretches – the mid 80s period when it seemed like new labels and new bands were springing up every week! There's plenty of great work here from a time before the scene got mis-led by dance rhythms and too many stimulants – a cornucopia of long-lost labels and groups – most of them jangle pop wonders with great talents for penning simple, catchy little tunes! Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
Hard-rocking gems from the second decade of Mercury Records – a label that first broke big in the postwar years with a strong ear for up-and-coming R&B – and one who continued that close to the ground success during the early years of rock and country music as well! Mercury wasn't as close to the south as some of its contemporaries, but it had a really great ear for key talent, and would often scour points far from its Chicago home in search of budding talents in a variety of genres – which means that the work here is definitely at the top of the pack for the time – tunes that have the sharp bristle of cuts on Chess, Sun, or Starday – the latter of whom was an early partner in helping Mercury find talent. The set features 35 tracks in all, with the superb presentation and detailed notes of previous volumes – on titles that include "Sittin On Top" by Curtis Gordon, "Rockin Robert" by The LaDell Sisters, "My Search" by Ben Hewett, "Baby Baby Baby" by Eddie Bond, "Shake It Up" by Conway Twitty, "My Foolish Fling" by The Half Brothers, "The Last Drag" by Voxpoppers, "Downtown" by Orville Couch, "I Want You Baby" by Jackie Cray, "I'll Never Let It Show" by Charlie Walker & The Four Pals, "Shake This Town" by The Counts, and "Cry Baby Cry" by Narvel Felts. VariousToo Slow To Disco Neo Presents The Sunset Manifesto ... CD
How Do You Are, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A great entry in this excellent and long-running series – one that's given us some sublime mellow soul and AOR work from the late 70s onward – including some fantastic sounds from around the globe! This volume follows on that work, but goes it one further – as all the tracks here are exclusive to the set – pulled together by the label, and appearing here for the first time ever – to showcase the growing contemporary underground for music like this, as you might guess from the "neo" in the title! We'd only heard a few of these artists before – and while the grooves might be a bit more instrumental than some of the other volumes, the spirit is definitely the same – laidback and sunny, with a nice undercurrent of soul. Titles include "Love Breaks Down (ext dancefloor edit)" by Prep, "Is It True" by Glamour Hammer with Toni Sauna, "I Feel High (vibes4yoursoul rmx)" by Poolside, "Do Beijo (ext version)" by Yuksek, "Hotel Sorriso" by Kraak & Smaak, "Think About It (Jack Tennis 80s disco dub rmx)" by Satin Jackets, "Mistakes" by Final DJs, "Windsurf" by Kimchi, "At Any Moment (DoctorSoul need to survive dub retherapy)" by Luxxury, and "Imagination" by Knight One. VariousWe Did 'Em First – 33 Lost, Obscure, & Forgotten Originals ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Famous hits, but in versions that you might not recognize – as they're the original recordings of the tunes, some of which are a lot more obscure than the bigger later versions! The package is a great romp through a range of different styles – rock, soul, and a little bit more – all from the glory days of the 7" single, when all sorts of artists were trying out all sorts of great material – so much so that even gems like these didn't always hit the charts! Consider the whole thing as a great "whodunit" of rock and roll – with a set list of 33 titles that includes "I Found You" by Yvonne Fair, "Pony Time" by Don Covay, "The Pale Faced Indian" by Marvin Rainwater, "Last Kiss" by Wayne Cochran, "Come Tomorrow" by Marie Knight, "Rave On" by Sonny West, "Johnny Angel" by Georgia Lee, "He's A Rebel" by Vikki Carr, "Ring Of Fire" by Anita Carter, "I Wanna Go Home" by Billy Grammer, "I'm All Shook Up" by David Hill, "Endlessly" by Johnny Ray, "Go Away Little Girl" by Bobby Vee, and "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On" by Big Maybelle. ✨✧ Billy Bang & William ParkerMedicine Buddha ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from two players who've just gotten better and better over the decades – both musicians who've made a huge impression from the late 70s onward, but who also continue to grow and refine their ideas as the years go on! This set features beautiful duets recorded at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, in 2009 – with Bang on violin and thumb piano, and William Parker on bass, plus a bit of shakuhashi and dousn gouni as well. Both players handle strings at a level that's far different than most of their contemporaries or influences – and have this sublimely spiritual style that's often a bit exotic too – but never in the sort of easier ways of Bang's Vietnam-related projects. Instead there's a very freely creative spirit as both players come together – finding a unique voice that's extremely moving, and never too heavy-handed – a huge reminder of why we love them both so much. Titles include "Bronx Aborigines", "Eternal Planet", "Buddha's Joy", "Medicine Buddha", and "Sky Song". CD

✨✧ Ornette ColemanComplete Science Fiction Sessions (including Broken Shadows – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Ornette Coleman's best recordings from the 70s – and like his other album for Columbia, quite a change from the freewheeling sounds he was blowing over at Blue Note! The style here is a bit more high concept, but in a good way – with all the edges that Coleman had developed from the late 50s onward, brought into tighter focus for the Columbia setting – given a bit more complexity, although still with plenty of room for freedom – and played both with a smaller combo, and a slightly larger group. The mix of players is as striking as the sounds on the record – and includes Coleman on alto, trumpet, and violin – plus Dewey Redman on tenor, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, Jim Hall on guitar, Cedar Walton on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell on drums. Asha Puthli sings a bit on the larger ensemble tracks – making a rare appearance here before her 70s soul career in Germany – and titles include "What Reason Could I Give", "Street Woman", "The Jungle Is A Skycraper", and "All My Life". 2CD set also features all the material from the Broken Shadows album as well – plus 3 previously unissued bonus tracks. Other titles include "Happy House", "Elizabeth", "Good Girl Blues", "Broken Shadows", "Rubber Gloves", and "Written Word". CD

✨✧ Mitty CollierLike Only Yesterday/Watching & Waiting ... 7-inch
Chess, Mid 60s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Deep soul from Mitty Collier – secular work, but with a heavenly finish! "Like Only Yesterday" has a slow, spiritual feel – Mitty's vocals stretching out over arrangements by Charles Stepney and Gene Barge, burning deeply as the song moves onward. "Watching & Waiting" has a similar feel, but a bit more of a bounce – almost a proudly stepping gospel march feel. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Kahil El ZabarKahil El Zabar's America The Beautiful ... CD
Spiritmuse, 2020. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
