Psychedelia first boomed big on the American scene of the late 60s – but the music had a huge second life on the UK scene in the second half of the 80s – where it took many different forms, all of which are contained in this heavy-duty set! The work here isn't slavishly tied to the fuzzy guitars and trippy elements of the first generation – although there's plenty of that at play, too – as the groups here come from different modes and smaller scenes – so that elements of mod, post-punk, club, and even early house music styles come into play from time to time – making for a hugely diverse array of sounds. The backstory might be that after years of clean teen living, there was a strong return of controlled substances in music making – but equally important here is a rediscovery of the best elements of echo, fuzz, and other spacey production elements! The set's a great exploration into this scene – done at the same level as the other great 3CD sets from Cherry Red, right down to a full booklet with lots of notes on the music. 60 tracks in all – with music by The Sneetches, Ultra Vivid Scene, The Seers, Telescopes, Stone Roses, Sun Dial, Robyn Hitchcock, Glass Keys, Legendary Pink Dots, Wolfhounds, Revolving Paint Dream, The Stairs, 14 Iced Bears, Red Chair Fadeaway, Biff Bang Pow, Paul Roland, Gol Gappas, The Sugar Battle, Magic Mushroom
Band, Prime Movers, Mood Six, The Times, Dentists, and many more!
