Nitai DasguptaSongs Of India ... LP
Mushroom/Manufactured, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
Beautiful vocal work from Nitai Dasgupta – a singer in the Indian classical tradition, but working here in two different modes that are equally great! One side of the record has shorter songs that balance Dasgupta's vocals with light percussion and a bit of flute – and the other has a side-long raga that really builds slowly, with amazing energy – with accompaniment on tabla, tamboura, and sitar – stretched out in this really moody sort of way! That track is entitled "Raga Bhairava", and it's slower and spookier than most in that format – and tunes on the other side include "Kayse Jau Tore Pas", "Sajni Sajni Tere Bin", "Cham Cham Cham Cham", and "O Ganga Tu Bahati Ja". ✨✧ Simon FinnPass The Distance ... LP
Mushroom/Antarctica Starts Here, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautifully fragile record cut by UK folkie Simon Finn – a singer with an incredibly distinct voice, recording here in an equally distinct musical setting! Finn's guitar and percussion are set in a trio with tabla, percussion, and dulcimer from Paul Burwell – and a lot of other assorted instrumentation from David Toop – including flute, harmonium, accordion, violin, and steel guitar! The sound is spare and folky, but not in a conventional way – as Finn's voice has a really dark quality, almost a David Tibet-like mode that makes the record a lot more "acid" than many of the so-called acid folk sets from the same time. As the record moves on, the whole thing gets odder and odder – balancing the few sweet moments with others of despair and darkness that are quite usual for the more-confident British scene of the time, and which almost point the way towards more experimental music from a decade later. Titles include "The Courtyard", "What A Day", "Fades", "Where's Your Master Gone", "Hiawatha", and "Patrice". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pandit Kanwar Sain TrikhaThree Sitar Pieces ... LP
Mushroom/Manufactured, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Three sitar pieces from Pandit Kanwar Sain Trikha – all recorded in London at the staret of the 70s, and with a vibe that's every bit as trippy as the cover! Two of the album's tracks are especially long – and really have this open, free-flowing energy – more than meditative, as Pandit often plays with a bit of an edge, and the percussion seems to have its own sort of approach too – handled by Paul Burwell on tablas in a few different cycles, almost moving away from the sitar, then back again. Titles include "Bageshri In Teental", "Rag Desh In Dadra", and "Folk Piece In Kahrwa" – the last of which is shorter and a bit more upbeat. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dibia$eBonus Levels ... LP
10 Thirty, 2019. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
Dibia$e takes on 8-bit video game era samples – putting together a fun, funky blast of a hip hop instrumentals set that pairs retro futuristic synth tones, bleeps and bits from classic video game franchises with more straightforward timeless beatcraft! It's wonderful stuff that for sure speaks to gamers of a certain age, with some random vocal samples from tv spots and other thematic touches, but Dibia$e is a first and foremost a top notch producer, not a novelty album composer – so this works 100% as solid leftfield hip hop instrumentals. Includes "King Bowser", "Link Up", "Tornado Spinkicks", "Ninja Starz", "Dragon Knucklez", "Castlevania (14KT Remix)", "Mushroom 1 Ups", "Wizard Spells", ""Smack Up", "Metroid (Elaquent Remix)", "Vorhees", "Piston Honda", "Power Up", "Castle Lair", "Jungle Stage" and more. FantasticsAll The People ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2011. Used ... $6.99
Keyboard flavored funky, jazzy sweetness from The Fantastics – who've had a pretty terrific run of funky 45s and a tight full length – delivering their best work yet and one of our favorite albums on Freestyle of the past couple years with All The People! There's a real love of timeless jazzy soul and funk, with some Latin-y percussion and harder hitting funk on a couple tunes, but what's great is how assured and sort of cohesive the vibe is – they're not rolling through genres, it's got a tight feel and the musicianship is totally stellar. The group features modern funk veteran Greg Boraman of the Soul Providers and Reverend Cleatus & The Soul Saviours on Hammond and other keys, with Pete Collison on guitar, Raydn Hunter on bass, James Smith on drums, Mark Norton on sax & flute, and some guest players – most notably, Sulent Fleming – who delivers some sultry, smoky soul vocals on a handful of numbers. Includes "Mushroom Strut", "Swwetback", "Somewhere Finally", "All The People" (Pts 1 & 2 on the CD version), "No Right Turns", "Know No Gods", "I Breathe", "The Bone Breaker", "Cold Case" and "Cecil's Slide". Leonard KingContinunationalizing ... CD
Uuquipleu, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
An excellent ensemble from the contemporary Detroit scene – one whose work evokes the modes of the city's older groups on Tribe Records and Strata – with a vibe that's wonderfully spiritual and righteous! The driving force of the group is drummer Leonard King – who you might know from his work with Lyman Woodard and other older Motor City jazz and soul groups – but there's a very unified spirit from the younger horn section in the lineup, who are offset by lighter electric touches on guitar and keyboards. There's added percussion at the core – which further deepens the sound of the record – and King sings a bit on on the record, often with a style that's more powerful than any of his other records. The spirit of underground jazz is alive and well on this set – and titles include "Song For Christine", "Bananas & Mushroom Clouds", "Dedicacion", "Tinges", "Nonchalant", "Faces In Reflection", and "Resume Said Yes To The Money". Moody genius from Can – and one of greatest albums of its time! Tons of spooky spare atmosphere, vocals that go from a lull to a cathartic echoey shriek, and that rollicking and propulsive backbeat that makes Can a band for the ages. Not just a landmark in what was to be dubbed Krautrock – truly an indispensable masterpiece regardless of genre, and a record so influential to so many movements in underground music that it is really impossible to imagine the world without it. Timeless! Tracks include "Paperchase", "Mushroom", "Oh Yeah", "Halleluwah", "Aumgn", "Peking O", and "Bring Me Coffee Or Tea". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousLosing Touch With My Mind – Psychedelia In Britain 1986 to 1990 (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Psychedelia first boomed big on the American scene of the late 60s – but the music had a huge second life on the UK scene in the second half of the 80s – where it took many different forms, all of which are contained in this heavy-duty set! The work here isn't slavishly tied to the fuzzy guitars and trippy elements of the first generation – although there's plenty of that at play, too – as the groups here come from different modes and smaller scenes – so that elements of mod, post-punk, club, and even early house music styles come into play from time to time – making for a hugely diverse array of sounds. The backstory might be that after years of clean teen living, there was a strong return of controlled substances in music making – but equally important here is a rediscovery of the best elements of echo, fuzz, and other spacey production elements! The set's a great exploration into this scene – done at the same level as the other great 3CD sets from Cherry Red, right down to a full booklet with lots of notes on the music. 60 tracks in all – with music by The Sneetches, Ultra Vivid Scene, The Seers, Telescopes, Stone Roses, Sun Dial, Robyn Hitchcock, Glass Keys, Legendary Pink Dots, Wolfhounds, Revolving Paint Dream, The Stairs, 14 Iced Bears, Red Chair Fadeaway, Biff Bang Pow, Paul Roland, Gol Gappas, The Sugar Battle, Magic Mushroom Band, Prime Movers, Mood Six, The Times, Dentists, and many more! ✨✧ Strawberry Alarm ClockIncense & Peppermints ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Dreamy dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes. Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the 8 minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". ✨✧ CanCan – The Singles (3LP set – with bonus download) ... LP
Mute, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Can singles? Seems like a very strange thing, given that the group that kicked off the prog generation were noted for their extended album jams – but the format actually works surprisingly well, and actually lets you focus in even more on their genius! These tracks deliver a short, compact punch of the Can essence at its best – and many of them are surprisingly darn funky – so much so that we're once again ready to declare Jaki Liebezeit as one of the greatest funk drummers of all time! Other instrumentation is amazing, too – but it's the drums that really grab us on so many of these tracks – especially as time moves on, and the group almost seems to predict a whole generation of post-punk experimentation with their mid 70s work. There's an insane amount of material here – from the full-on funk jams of "Vitamin C" and "Mushroom", to the spacier "Hunters & Collectors", to so many other great cuts that include "Don't Say No", "Soul Desert", "Turtles Have Short Legs", "Spoon", "Halleluwah", "I'm So Green", "Moonshake", "Dizzy Dizzy", "Splash", "I Want More", "Vernal Equinox", "Can Can", "Return", "Cascade Waltz", and "Future Days". ✨✧ LoveLove (180 gram pressing – mono) ... LP
Elektra/Rhino, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". ✨✧ Lalo SchifrinThere's A Whole Lalo Schifrin Goin' On ... LP
Dot, 1968. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A crazy album of funky tracks from Lalo Schifrin – very different than most of his other jazz and bossa work! This set's got some very tripped out styles that mix together funky backings, jazzy riffing, and even some nice electronics – a sweet little groove that's even more wild and hip than even the best of Schifrin's soundtrack work from the 60s! Some tunes certainly show the deft talent for arranging woodwinds and rhythms that first caught the ears of so many listeners on famous soundtracks – but in the setting of this record, away from any directorial needs, Lalo's also free to explore some groovier music ideas – and he really lets loose tremendously as the set rolls on! The titles alone should tell you the feel of the record – with names like "Secret Code", "Dissolving", "Vaccinated Mushrooms", "Wheat Germ Landscapes", and "How To Open at Will The Most Beautiful Window". Lenny Kaye and Elekra Records big wig Jac Holzman put Nuggets together in 1972, mixing a bunch of great buzzsaw rock singles, indiscriminately melding hits and underground cuts alike –27 great tracks by the likes of the Amboy Dukes, Standells, Castaways, Magicians, the Seeds, the Electric Prunes, Sagittarius, the Magic Mushrooms and many more!
