MushroomMessages From The Spliff Bunker ... LP
Heyday, 2024. Good 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Heady sounds from Mushroom – a surprisingly long-running act who've been giving the world a great blend of funk and prog for decades! These guys hail from the Bay Area, and have clearly drunk deep of that location's legendary music scene – yet they also sometimes echo the soulful side of Can as well – spinning out long tracks with plenty of grooves, and lots of cool instrumental touches on flute, sax, vibes, and gongs! Matt Cunitz produced the record, and serves up some mighty cool keyboards – Fender Rhodes, Hammond, Clavinet, Moog, and more – on titles that include "Marc Moved To Buffalo", "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities", "Looking For Adventure", "One Ton Anvil", and "Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful". LP, Vinyl record album
(NOTE – One LP has a melted edge and will skip on the first track on each side. Looks great otherwise.)

✨✧ Mushroom & Eddie GaleJoint Happening ... CD
Hyena, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mushroom join with legendary trumpeter Eddie Gale – in a set of work that's easily some of the group's greatest so far! The usual tripped-out jamming style is pushed a bit to the background here – and Mushroom seem to take Gale's presence very seriously, and try to create a more complicated, more thoughtful set of tunes for the record. There's still plenty of keyboards, and a bit of fuzzy guitar – but the overall sound is more open and spacious, allowing plenty of room for stretched-out trumpet lines from Gale – plus some nice use of vibes, marimbas, and percussion. Titles include "Selling Oakland By The Pound", "Border Crossing", "Peace", "The Spirit", and "I Don't Need To Fight To Prove I'm Right I Don't Need To Be Forgiven". CD

Mushroom Hour Half Hour/International Anthem, 2023. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really heady set from the contemporary jazz scene in South Africa – a record led by groundbreaking drummer Asher Gamedze, and one that has all these wonderfully righteous currents soaring from a surprisingly small group! Gamedze's sense of rhythm is nicely offbeat – different than you might expect, especially for a group led by a drummer – and the small group features intersecting lines from the trumpet of Robin Fassie and tenor of Buddy Wells, as singer Julian Deacon Otis lends vocals to really top the whole thing off in a wonderful way. Bassist Thembinkosi Mavimbela provides moody undercurrents to the whole thing – and titles include "Melancholia", "If It Rains To Pursue Truth", "Turbulence's Pulse", "Out Stepped Zim", "Sometimes I Think To Myself", and "Underground Formation". Plus, this physical edition features three bonus tracks recorded with the Another Time Ensemble, which has guitar, alto, bass, and electronics – titles that include live versions of "Melancholia", "If It Rains", and "Out Stepped Zim". One of the key 70s gems cut by Australian soul singer Renee Geyer – a vocalist with a tremendous groove, and one who delivers material here that's way different than you might expect! Peter Brotzmann & Paal Nilssen-LoveChicken Sh*t Bingo ... LP
Trost (Austria), 2024. New Copy ... $33.99 38.99
A set of unreleased improvisations between these two fantastic free jazz musicians – intended as a session in which, according to Paal Nilssen-Love, "we agreed to bring all the metal we could bring"! That means that Peter Brotzmann is blowing a wide variety of reed instruments, and Paal is handling lots of percussion and gongs next to his drums – yet all elements are used in these very spare styles, almost more loft jazz than you'd guess from the legacy of intensity from both of the musicians – which makes for yet another great late life surprise in the final years of Brotzmann – proof that he never stopped reinventing and opening doors to new avenues of creation! Titles include "Dancing Octopus", "Move On Over", "South Of No Return", "Butterfly Mushroom", "Found The Cabin But No People", and "Five Of Them Survived The Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

Toshiyuki HondaCC Rex ... CD
Pit Inn (Japan), 2021. New Copy ... $22.99 28.99
Saxophonist Toshiyuki Honda evokes some of the spirit of his classic Burning Waves album here – working with some slight fusion touches, in a way that reminds us just how strongly his reedwork can soar in just the right setting! Honda blows both soprano and alto here, and shares arrangements on the album with Soichi Noriki, who plays both acoustic and electric piano – always with this soulful flow that really matches the crisp imagination of Honda's saxophone lines. The bassist, Gregg Lee, is also electric – and the rest of the combo features Shingo Okudaira on drums, and May Inoue on guitar, which is often used in these warmly chromatic ways. Titles include "Nile", "Magic Mushroom", "Horizon", "CC Rex", "Last Ballad", and a nice take on the Chick Corea classic "La Fiesta". CD

LoveLove ... LP
Elektra, 1966. Very Good+ ... $33.99 39.99
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo big E red label pressing. Cover has a cut corner, but is great otherwise!)

Buddy RichRoar Of '74 ... LP
Groove Merchant, 1973. Very Good ... $8.99
One of the funkiest Buddy Rich albums of the 70s – a mad screaming affair that's overflowing with great tunes! The band on the set is very full – with a heck of a lot of trumpets in the brass section, set next to searing sax work by the great Pat LaBarbera. But even better is the rhythm section – which grooves in a hard electric funk mode, thanks to guitar from Joe Beck, bass from Tony Levin, and some surprisingly smoking drums from Buddy himself! Tracks are all very nicely grooving – and titles include "Kilimanjaro Cookout", "Nuttville", "Senator Sam", "Waltz Of The Mushroom Hunters", and "Big Mac". LP, Vinyl record album

Sidewalk, 1968. Very Good ... $14.99
Hip, hazy Sunset Strip psych tunes from the mid 60s American International exploitation flick Psych-Out – that notorious flick starring Susan Strasberg, Dean Stockwell, Bruce Dern and Jack Nicholson as Stoney! Totally killer stuff from The Seeds, trippier, flute-y and organ washed grooves from Strawberry Alarm Clock and thematically titled numbers from The Storybook! Includes "The Pretty Song From Psych-Out" , "Psych-Out Sanctorum", "The Love Children" and "Psych-Out" by The Storybook – plus "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" and "The World's On Fire" by Strawberry Alarm Clock, "Two Fingers Pointed At You" by The Seeds and the crazy, brazen "Purple Haze" ripoff "Ashbury Wednesday" credited to Boenzee Cryque – performed by Jack Nicholson's group in the flick! This CD edition from Reel Time has a bonus version of "The Pretty Song From Psych-Out" – this one by The Strawberry Alarm Clock! LP, Vinyl record album

Strawberry Alarm ClockIncense & Peppermints ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $43.99 59.99
Dreamy dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes. Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the 8 minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". VariousAs I Roved Out – A Story Of Celtic Rock 1968 to 1978 (3CD set) ... CD
Strawberry (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... $28.99 36.99 About June 20, 2024 (delayed)
A set that's way more than just the Irish rock extravangaza that you might expect from the title – as the collection really digs deep to show the way that older Celtic themes were influencing not just 60s and 70s bands from the Emerald Isle, but also groups from Wales, Scotland, and even France as well – tying things together and drawing a line through music in ways you might not expect! There's just a touch of folksy work here, mixed in with harder rock, prog, and some surprising blues and singer/songwriter material that really rounds out the package – all to showcase a range of artists who drew inspiration from older themes, but worked in ways that were very groundbreaking from the time – and still sound magnificently fresh all these many years later! As with other work on the label, the package features a great collection of notes that really illuminates the choice of tracks – 52 tracks in all, with work from Edwrad H Davis, Contraband, Bert Jansch, Hergest, Skibberdeen, Mushroom, Faces, Thin Lizzy, David McWilliams, Mellow Candle, Wishbone Ash, Woods Band, Archie Fisher, Trees, East Of Eden, Trader Horne, Skid Row, Taste, Huw Jones, Al Stewart, Bran, Spud, Endaf Emlyn, and many others. ✨✧ Strawberry Alarm ClockIncense & Peppermints/Wake Up (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Uni/Tune In (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of classics from Strawberry Alarm Clock – back to back on a single CD! First up is their classic Incense & Peppermints – dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the eight minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". Next is Wake Up It's Tomorrow – a great little second set from Strawberry Alarm Clock – much headier and tripped-out than their first! For the record, the group's not just working off the success of a previous single – and instead is really taking time in the studio to try out new ideas, musically, lyrically, and (most importantly) in the range of cool production techniques used on the set! There's still a warm harmony vocal approach on some of the album's best tunes, but they're also matched here with some more progressive guitar parts and fuzzier instrumental touches – in a way that brings a bit of darkness into the sunshine, and creates the wonderful sense of counterpoint that was always the group's strongest suit. Most tunes are nicely unfamiliar, and titles include "Curse Of The Witches", "Black Butter – Past, Present, & Future", "Soft Skies No Lies", "They Saw The Fat One Coming", "Nightmare of Percussion", "Tomorrow", "Sit With the Guru", and "Pretty Song From Psych-Out". CD also features single mixes of "Tomorrow" and "Sit With The Guru". CD

✨✧ Buddy RichRoar Of 74/Last Blues Album/Very Live At Buddy's Place (3CD set) ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973/1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Three groovy 70s albums from Buddy Rich! Roar Of 74 is one of the funkiest Buddy Rich albums of the 70s – a mad screaming affair that's overflowing with great tunes! Last Blues Album has a misleading title, as there's nothing "blues" about this set – as Buddy Rich is working with some of the best soul jazz players of the Groove Merchant label – on a set that's one of his few small combo albums from the 70s! The vibe is very relaxed and laidback, and even Buddy's tight drumming can't over-hype the sound. Tracks are longish and open – more in the Prestige jazz mode of the 60s than the usual funkier style of the Groove Merchant label – and the sextet features Jimmy McGriff on organ, George Freeman on guitar, Kenny Barron on electric piano, Illinois Jacquet on tenor, and Bob Cranshaw on bass. Titles include "Soft Winds", "Sweet Georgia Brown", "How Long", "Courage", and "Alright". Very Live At Buddy's Place is hard-swinging Buddy Rich from the prime early 70s years – not exactly an all-out funk affair, but still a great groover, with plenty of hip little big band numbers! The groove here is nice and lean – and Buddy and the group are working at Buddy's own club – hitting that trademark all-out Rich sound, but still leaving plenty of room for the soloists. The group's got some great soul jazz players – including Sonny Fortune on alto, Jack Wilkins on guitar, and Kenny Barron on piano – as well as some really smoking tenor work from Sal Nistico, who's always adaptable to a setting like this. The album's got a tasty version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", plus other nice tracks that include "Sierra Lonely", "Nica's Dream", "Billy's Bounce", "Cardin Blue" and "Jumpin At The Woodside". CD

One of those few classic cases where a compilation of tracks was maybe even more influential than the original music itself – as this early 70s collection of 60s material turned out to shape and influence generations for decades to come! Guitar genius Lenny Kaye put the set together famously for Elektra Records in 1972 – as a reminder that, just a few years before, there were some amazing sounds that were not only brewing up in local indie scenes around the country, but also on the radio as well – even though most of those groups had been pushed into relative obscurity by the rise of soft rock, hard rock, and classic rock of the early 70s! The package is a return to the pre-prog years, with an especially strong ear for garage-tuned tracks that would go on to shape later punk, 80s indie, and lots more underground sounds in the future. Rhythms are at the core of the set – lots of choppy drum parts that are mighty nice, bumped along by sweet compressed basslines too – and other instrumentation includes lots of vibes, reeds, and a bit of keyboards from time to time – used in really creative ways! If we had to come up with a comparison, we might say these guys sound a bit like some of the best work by Steve Grossman and the PM Records crew in the 70s – but they've definitely got their own vibe too. This set's got some very tripped out styles that mix together funky backings, jazzy riffing, and even some nice electronics – a sweet little groove that's even more wild and hip than even the best of Schifrin's soundtrack work from the 60s! Some tunes certainly show the deft talent for arranging woodwinds and rhythms that first caught the ears of so many listeners on famous soundtracks – but in the setting of this record, away from any directorial needs, Lalo's also free to explore some groovier music ideas – and he really lets loose tremendously as the set rolls on! The titles alone should tell you the feel of the record – with names like "Secret Code", "Dissolving", "Vaccinated Mushrooms", "Wheat Germ Landscapes", and "How To Open at Will The Most Beautiful Window". LP, Vinyl record album
