Jinx & Mr C (James O'Connor & Damen Corrado)Compliments Of Chicagohoodz – Chicago Street Gang Art & Culture ... Book
Feral House, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 22.95
A really amazing look at the secret art and language of gang culture in Chicago – the most detailed book we've ever seen to examine the words on the street during the 60s, 70s, and 80s! Chicago had a very special sort of language to communicate gang activity and culture during the heyday of the city's big gangs – graffiti that was filled with codes and symbols, and which really predated major street art in New York – plus a network of patches, business cards, and other objects that conveyed a special sort of numerology and message – sometimes harmless words about parties and events, sometimes essential details about the criminal underworld. This book is fascinating on so many different levels – not just a prurient true crime story, but instead a very detailed examination of gang culture in terms of linguistics, visual media, and representation. Yet all that detail doesn't make things too dry, either – as the book is overflowing with photos and images – examples of street graffiti, countless business cards, patches, portraits, and more – even some maps at the back. The whole thing is a massive 375 pages, full color throughout, and very beautifully done! Book

✨✧ Mr ChopSilver Frequencies ... CD
Now Again/Five Day Weekend, 2009. Used ... $2.99
An overlooked chapter in the Mr Chop canon! Coz Littler, aka Mr. Chop, has been a beacon in the future groove cosmos for years now – filtering his love for spacey 70s psych funk through classic-era hip hop beatcraft in a distinctive, irresistible way – and he's uber-prolific, too. In fact, he's so prolific, we somehow snoozed through the release of '09's Silver Frequencies, probably while playing the heck out of For Pete's Sake, which came out that same year. Better late than never! Silver Frequencies is up there with his best stuff – with heavy drums, killer Rhodes, Hammond and other cosmic keyboards, fuzzy guitars and unshakable rhythms. Titles include "Silver Frequencies", "Feathers On Fire", the amazing "Psychic Psych" (with some great guest sax by Colin Lamont, "Outside My Door", "Hole In The Sky", "Magic Box", "Flashbacks", the 7-part "Intermezzo", "Ends And Means Dub" and many more. Mr ChopSounds From The Cave ... LP
Jazz & Milk (Germany), 2008. Near Mint- ... $14.99
No caveman sounds here, as the grooves are all plenty contemporary – yet also filled with plenty of funky touches from the 70s! The album's got a similar feel to the breaks album on Jazz & Milk – loads of acoustic elements patched together with a solid, soulful feel – a space somewhere between deep funk and hip hop production, with some occasional leftfield touches as well! The album's a short one, but it's quite solid throughout – aggressively funky without going over the top, and with a nice sense of freshness as each new tune rolls along. Titles include "Fuel", "Monolith Voodoo Vibes", "The Red Baron", "Conduit Closing", "Brainticket", "The Caveman", and "Snob". LP, Vinyl record album

Mr Confuse has always been one of the best blue-eyed soul singers on the overseas funk scene – able to hit the right sort of modes for the music, yet never push things so much that he's trying to sound fake – a careful blend that might make others want to take note! Backings are tight and funky – definitely classic deep funk, but with some contemporary currents too – plenty of horns in the mix, and leadership in the group from Mark Figge – who blows tenor and flute, and also handles Fender Rhodes as well. Titles include "Gain Station", "Rush Zone", "Same Old Game", "Only A Man", "The Turnaround", "Only Rainbows", "Can't Be No Crime", and "Cranberry Dream". CD

Mr DaySmall Fry ... CD
Favorite (France), 2010. Used ... $8.99
Soulful sounds from Mr Day – the first full full length as Mr Day from the singer of Metropolitan Jazz Affair and Dynamics, plus a go-to vocalist for Boozoo Bajou, Patchworks and other club producers and combos that need that extra touch of soul reverence! Mr Day has less of a club groove vibe and more of a neo classic soul & funk sound – lots of love for classic Curtom here, with Curtis indebted vocals on some numbers but also some tunes with more of a Northern Soul vibe. Still, it feels of the here and now rather than a retro revival exercise, and it's a strong record that more than lives up to the potential of the handful of singles we heard in the run-up! Titles include "Tears Of Joy", "Small Fry", "If I Can't Love You", a nice cover of "Spooky", "Get Your Point Over", "Soul On Wax", "Straggler", "That's How I Feel About You", "Heaven Knows", "No Time", "Get It On", "Both Sides" and "Don't You Stay Outside Tonight". Mr ScruffFriendly Bacteria ... CD
Ninja Tune, 2014. Used ... $6.99
Mr Scruff's always had a great way with a tune – and his underground work has reached a lot more ears than we ever expected over the years – but this time around he sounds even more focused and fluid than ever before – never commercial, but really pushing his freaky funky groove into a whole new light! Part of the strength of the set is the singers – a lineup that includes Robert Owens, Denis Jones, and Vanessa Freeman – but there's also some compelling instrumentation as well – including key acoustic touches from trumpeter Matthew Halsall and cellist Sara Dowling, each helping to shape their own musical moments. The pace is generally laidback, but the music is way better than warmed-over downtempo – and titles include "Stereo Breath", "Render Me", "Come Find Me", "He Don't", "Friendly Bacteria", "What", "We Are Coming", and "Catch Sound". A nice bit of soulful house – plus a handful of solid alternate mixes – feels pretty blissful, actually! The original mix is sparely furnished in the best kind of way, with a compelling beat and soul steeped vocal. The Damp Velour + Intimacy mix moves a bit faster, but keeps the intimate soul intact. The Dossier mix & instrumental on the flip are really compelling, too, starting with the instrumental and building to the vocal, with equally solid and unique Marceauxmarceaux and Miss Chop mixes to close. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Mr Gasser & The WeirdosRods N Ratfinks ... LP
Capitol, 1964. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredibly groovy record from the LA scene of the 60s – part of a trio of cool Capitol sets with cover art by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth – all put together by studio genius Gary Usher! The tunes here are all originals – jaunty numbers with a definite hot rod vibe, but with a groove that's even hipper than usual – kind of a swinging soundtrack sort of approach, especially on the ultra-catchy vocals! Usher sings leads with Dick Burns – and the combo features Glen Campbell and Billy Strange on guitars, Ernie Freeman on piano, Carol Kaye on bass, and Earl Palmer on drums – all making for a rock-solid approach to the music. Titles include "The Lonely Stocker", "Three Kats In A Tub", "Hey Rat Fink", "1947 Avanti", "The Waltz Of The Rat Finks", and "The Ballad Of Effin Fink". LP, Vinyl record album

The coolest work we've heard so far from this Patchworks side project – a record that fuses together equal parts 70s jazz, funk, and soul – with just the right smattering of global influences as well! There's a tightness to the set that we really love – careful instrumentation and production that make the whole thing feel like a Fantasy Records jazz funk project that might have happened down in Rio or Lagos – with slight Afro or Brazilian elements sifting in next to a core groove that comes from really classic basslines, keyboards, and drums! There's some vocals on a few tracks – mostly chorus-type that flow along with the grooves – and tracks include "City Rocking", "Candyman", "Hips Shaking", "Gimme All What You Got", "South Street Walk", "I Get So Crazy", and a surprisingly great cover of "I Can't Go For That". CD includes the bonus track "Give My Love". CD

BobbettesWe Shot Mr Lee ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A group who are best known for one huge hit in 1957 – but one who also recorded a fair bit of other wonderful material too – not just their early singles for Atlantic Records, but also a lot of material for other companies too – as you'll hear in this collection that brings together singles for King, Jubilee, Triple X, End, and other labels too! Although a girl group, The Bobbettes have lots of nice rough edges that are more R&B and deep soul overall – hardly the sweet pop of groups that would follow them in the 60s, and instead maybe a group expression of some of the modes that Ruth Brown and Lavern Baker were cutting for Atlantic – with maybe some of the energy of the doo wop groups thrown in for good measure. CD features 31 tracks – titles include "Speedy", "Zoomy", "Untrue Love", "I Shot Mr Lee", "Mr Lee", "I Don't Like It Like That (parts 1 & 2)", "Mr Johnny Q", "Looking For A Lover", "Mama Papa", "Over There", "Loneliness", "I Cried", "Um Bow Bow", and "The Dream". Modern Harmonic/Something Weird, 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.99
A very cool soundtrack for a very weird movie – an early 60s nudie film, but one that's a fair bit tamer and sweeter than material from later in the decade! The focus here is on the music – which is surprisingly well-done, and mixes jazz with exotic currents – often with a lot more thoughtfulness than you might expect, at a level that puts some of the best tracks here right up there with the best early 60s Italian noir jazz classics. Nicholas Carras wrote and conducted – but there's a tenorist on the album that really makes the whole thing great, someone who can play with the depth of Plas Johnson at his best. Titles include the eleven-minute "A Happy Turtle" – plus "Jungle Duck", "Three Sporty Ladies", "Petey's Sweeties", "The Happy Animal", "Animal Ambrosia", and "My Little Shasta". Key to this project is drummer Idris Muhammad – who's on the kit, already kicking it up in the way that would make him a jazz funk legend as the 70s began – but so young here, he's working under his original name of Leo Morris! The rest of the group is equally great – with the up-and-coming Lonnie Smith on Hammond and Jimmy Ponder on guitar – plus tight trumpet from Blue Mitchell, who's really hitting his most soulful sound of the 60s. Titles include Donaldson's fantastic funky reworking of "Ode To Billie Joe" – a very famous sample cut over the years – plus the soulful groovers "The Humpback", "Peepin", "The Kid", and a nice take on "The Shadow Of Your Smile". Effie Duke & The Love FamilyMr Love ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1980. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
A sweet bit of Afro Funk from Effi Duke & The Love Family – a set that's got some great touches that make the whole album pretty darn unique! There's a lot more groove here than you might expect from the "love" in the title – long tracks that build up in a flurry of skittish rhythms, dubby basslines, and these evocative lyrics that are maybe more calls to action for the groove, than actual song content – put forth by Effi Duke, who handles the guitar and bass – the latter with a nicely dark edge – in a small combo that mostly just includes drums and keyboards! The keyboards are especially cool – sometimes right on the groove, sometimes stepping out in spacier lines – almost hitting some William Onyeabar touches – and given the cool currents at the bottom, the album really comes across with a lot of power from just a little. Titles include "Time Is Come", "Mr Love", "Know Thyself", "Get Ready", and "Turn Me On". CD

Incredible work from the mighty Alton Ellis – one of the first soul singers to emerge in Jamaica during the 60s – presented here on a famous greatest hits album, which is then expanded with the addition of 37 more bonus tracks! Alton Ellis was a key figure in the shift towards more homegrown styles in Jamaica during the 60s – a singer with roots in more American soul modes, but easily tipped towards fresher rocksteady rhythms that really help give his vocals a new focus – often with all these hip little inflections that balance sweetness with bite, at a level that also makes Alton such a huge influence on reggae singers to come in the 70s. Backings on most numbers are by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics – and titles on the greatest hits album include "Breaking Up", "Why Birds Follow Spring", "Chatty Chatty People", "Baby I Love You", "You Made Me So Very Happy", "Ain't That Loving You", "What Does It Take", and "If I Could Rule This World". 2CD set adds in a huge number of bonus tracks – singles produced by Duke Reid from the mid 60s onwards – with titles that include "Duke Of Earl", "Dance Crasher", "Black Man's Word", "Give Me Your Love", "I Love You", "Party Time", "Girl I've Got A Date", "Rock Steady", "Cry Tough", "Don't Trouble People", "Diana", "La La Means I Love You", and "The Same Song". Fantastic early material from Gregory Isaacs – captured here early in his career, and working in a deep roots reggae mode – recording at Channel One with great direction from Ossie Hibbert! The set's laidback and righteous, in ways that let all the soulful qualities of Isaac's vocals still come through – but in a very different way than on his later hits! The rhythms are provided by the Revolutionaries – a perfect choice for the record – and titles include "Slave Master", "Story Book Children", "Get Ready", "Set The Captives Free", "Hand Cuff", "Storm", "Sacrifice", and "Smile". This great 2CD set features bonus material on CD1 – "The Sun Shines For Me", "Mr Know It All", "African Woman", "Thief A Man", "Love Light Burning", "My Conversation", and "Mr Brown". CD2 features the full album Leggo Dub – related dub material by the Ossie All-Stars – The Revolutionaries working with Ossie Hibbert on some wicked instrumentals that have plenty of core rhythms that never stray too far, while Hibbert makes magic with echo and other slight studio techniques! Chuck Jackson may be Mr Everything in the title – but there's one thing he does especially well on this classic 60s album – deliver a rock-solid sort of heartbreaking soul – the sort that few others could touch at the time! Jackson often doesn't get his due in the history books these days – but records like these were landmark moments of pride, power, and open male emotion – of the sort that went onto inform generations of soul music to come – and help future artists find their way, guided by the emotional frankness of Jackson's approach! Backings are carefully balanced – tight, but never too polished to overwhelm Chuck's vocals – which soar out with a raw power that blows away Sam Cooke or some of Jackson's other contemporaries. Blue Note, 1972. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
A overlooked gem in Elvin Jones' Blue Note career – and an album that's virtually the blueprint for the Stone Alliance sound forged later in the decade by bassist Gene Perla and reedman Steve Grossman! Both players are working to full effect on this smoking little set – mixing some of the more spiritual modes of other group members with their own sharper-edged, funky-leaning styles – all held together perfectly by both Jones' tight work on drums, and his expansive musical vision! Other players are great too – and include Pepper Adams on baritone sax, David Liebman on flute and tenor, and Jan Hammer on acoustic piano – an instrument he handles with surprising subtlety and soul. Many cuts have a hard, choppy groove – and titles include a remake of "Gee Gee", plus "One's Native Place", "Mr Jones", and "What's Up – That's It". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A pretty sweet set from reedman David Newman – a record that has him working with larger instrumental backdrops, in a mode that's almost like the sound going on with Stanley Turrentine over at CTI! William S. Fischer handled all the arrangements – so although things are tight, there's still a cool creative undercurrent too – way more than just standard orchestrations behind Newman's sweet solo lines on alto, tenor, and soprano sax. A few cuts have backing vocals – used in ways you might hear on a Hank Crawford album – and titles include "Shiki", "Promise Me Your Love", "Ebo Man", "Groovin To The Music", "I Love Music", and "Mashooganah". Mercury, 1977. Used ... $9.99
A lesser-known 70s album by The Ohio Players – tunes recorded for the soundtrack of the late blacksploitation film Mr Mean, but also very much in the tight funk format of the group's Mercury work! Tracks are nice and long overall – almost in a stretched-out take on the soundtrack mode, so that there's more "chase" numbers than usual. The real highlight is the sweet sticky tune "Good Luck Charm" – sweetly tripping across a 9 minute ballad mode that's got plenty of spacious mellow grooving underneath. Other tracks include the short percussive "The Controller's Mind", plus "The Big Score", "Mr Mean", "Magic Trick", and the flute-funk "Speak Easy". CD

Columbia/BGO (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Four albums from the classic Columbia Records run of Johnny Paycheck in the 70s – a time when the singer had sprung from the indie underground way into the Nashville mainstream – using his unique vocal approach to stand out both as a budding outlaw talent, and as a surprisingly strong singer of heartbreaking love songs! Producer Billy Sherrill is at the helm of all four of these albums, using the kind of lessons he was learning while reviving other aging country stars for the 70s – and the first two records are heavy on tunes from the team of Jerry Foster and Bill Rice, probably the two most love-oriented albums of the set – while the final two are heavier on honky tonk tunes and have more of an outlaw bent. Titles include "The Woman Who Put Me Here", "Loving You Beats All I've Ever Seen", "The 4 F Blues", "Take This Job & Shove It", "From Cotton To Satin", "If Love Gets Any Better", "All In The Name Of Love", "She'll Unwine Me", "The Man From Bowling Green", "Colorado Kool Aid", "Barstool Mountain", "Ain't She Something Else", "Rhythm Guitar", and "When I Had A Home To Go To". 41 tracks in all. Jerry ReedJerry Reed/Hot A Mighty/Lord Mr Ford/Uptown Poker Club ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
Four albums from a time when Jerry Reed was really on fire – great little gems that work together as a collected set! First up is the self-titled Jerry Reed – a set with a title and cover that are a bit understated, but a groove that's got the Alabama wild man completely at home! As with other Reed albums from the time, there's a nice blend of styles at play – some tunes have Jerry's guitar right up front, some get a bit funky, and some have him laying back into a more traditional country-styled approach – the last of which makes for a surprisingly nice sound on the more sincere numbers. Titles include "You're Young & You'll Forget", "Alabama Wild Man", "Misery Loves Company", "Sunshine Day", "Almost Crazy", "500 Miles Away From Home", "You Made My Life A Song", and "Huggin & Chalkin". Hot A' Mighty is Jerry Reed at his swaggery, electric honky tonk, and country boogie best – the dude who will forever be remembered as the smart ass trucker sidekick in Burt Reynolds movies – but was also one of the best electric guitarists in country music, and one of the most charismatic characters of the 70s country scene! From country rock covers to weepy Nashville Sound styles, he does it all well. Includes "Goodnight, Irene", "Nashville Woman", a cowbell peppered "Sixteen Tons", "Back Home In Georgia" and more. Lord Mr Ford is a fantastic vehicle for the wit and sharpness of the great Jerry Reed – the former in his lyrics, the latter in his always-great guitar lines – the sort that made him one of the hippest pickers in Nashville back in the day! The tunes are a mix of originals and more familiar numbers – and whether Jerry's singing straight, or goofing things up, he really has a great way of making things his own through and through. Titles include the great 70s automobile tune "Lord Mr Ford" – plus "Pickie Pickie Pickie", "You Can't Keep Me Here In Tennessee", "Two Timin'", "I'm Gonna Write A Song", "Rainbow Ride", and "One Sweet Reason". Uptown Poker Club is a set with a great Jack Davis cover – and a vibrant sound from Jerry Reed to match the image on the front! The guitar work is worth the price of admission alone – chugging and funky at spots, faster-riffing and on fire at others, and surprisingly sensitive in a few other moments – especially when mixed with a bit of steel or dobro. There's also just the right balance between wit and sincerity to keep things well-rounded – on titles that include "Everybody Has Those Kind Of Days", "Lay It On My Lady", "It's Tough All Over", "You've Got It", "North To Chicago", "Honkin", "Some Of These Days", and "The Uptown Poker Club". Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good ... $19.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – reminding us not only that Johnny Hammond Smith is one hell of an organist, but also a great leader with a really unique feel for a groove! The set's noteworthy not just for Johnny's own work on Hammond, but also for the presence of a young Houston Person – blowing tenor here in a way that's breathtaking right from the start – a bold, soulful tone that's a perfect fit for the group – which also includes trumpet from Johnny Williams and guitar from Eddie McFadden. The set includes a lot of tasty originals by Johnny – like "Cyra", "Lambert's Lounge", "Departure", and "Opus 2" – and already shows the way that Hammond was complicating his groove from that of other players of the time! Columbia, 1978. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A great late 70s set from Weather Report – a record that's certainly got more polish than the early years, but which still sounds plenty darn great to our ears – thanks to a really free-flowing sense of imagination! The tunes here have a wonderfully chunky sort of approach to the groove – that kind of building, pulsating quality that always marked Weather Report as organic, even when electric – and which gave their music a sense of soul, even when it was sometimes smooth. There's enough dark corners here to shake off any of the more commercial touches – and it's wonderful to hear the way that Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul have evolved the original Weather Report ethos into something new and fresh. Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. A record club that's way way cooler than the Columbia House version of the 70s – as the Mr Bongo take on the format features only rare funk tracks from around the world! Most of these tunes here are from vintage Brazilian and African sources – but the tunes still have plenty of elements that you'd know from American soul of the 70s – funky drums, basslines, sweet keyboards, and soulful vocals – served up alongside less familiar elements that really keep things interesting, and which makes for a hell of a compilation overall! Most of these tracks were previously issued on very limited Mr Bongo 45s – brought together here with a set list that includes "Ebony Game" by Guy Chevas, "Awake O Zion" by Elbertina Twinkie Clark, "Family Planning" by Kiru Stars, "Nao Adianta" by Leny Andrade, "Samba Maneiro" by Rosa Maria, "Obrigado Corcovado" by Tom & Dito, "Capoeira" by Joao Diaz, "Harari" by The Beaters, "Merry Go Round" by The Equatics, and "Ecology" by Anubis. Massive soul from Freddie Scott – exactly the kind of set that has us wondering why he wasn't a bigger star back in the 60s! Freddie's style is very mature – never too polished, yet totally put-together – in a way that rivals other 60s male greats like Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson – both of whom are a good comparison for the sophisticated vibe that Scott's going for in his music here! Backings have a strong uptown soul mode – but also allow a lot of space for Freddie's own expressions, so that the strings really lay back, and the orchestrations never get in the way of his bad self – a perfect balance, thanks to the work of arrangers Garry Sherman, Belford Hendricks, and Robert Mersey. A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Akofa AkoussahAkofa Akoussah ... LP
Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". LP, Vinyl record album

Gyedu-Blay AmbolleyAmbolley ... LP
Cougar/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 21.98
A really well-crafted set of funk from the legendary Gyedu-Blay Ambolley – maybe best known for his material in the mid 70s, but sounding equally wonderful here on an album from the start of the 80s! The sound is sharper and more sophisticated than before – recorded in London, with a great ear for the many possibilities of basslines, keyboard parts, and rhythms – used in modes that embrace a wider range of soul styles, but which also don't sound anything at all like mainstream R&B! A few tracks feature more familiar highlife rhythms, but most are in this new breed laid down by Ambolley – on titles that include "Walking Down The Street", "Frafranta", "Adwoa", "Cut Your Coat", "Cause I Love You", and a great funky remake of "Simigwa" – maybe worth the price of the album alone, thanks to percussion that almost rivals the Incredible Bongo Band. Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Banda Black RioMaria Fumaca ... LP
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". A nice remix of this percussive jammer – given lots of warm touches, and a sweetly soulful groove – in the style of Da Lata's best work! The single also features a "Forro Medley" – kind of an update of the classic forro sound, turned into the dancefloor rhythms we've come to expect from Bazedo! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Gyedu Blay Ambolley & Zantoda Mark IIIControl ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
A rare one from Ghanaian legend Gyedu Blay Ambolley – fully in control of a far-reaching funky trip with his Zantoda Mark III group! Control carries on with the most treasured aspects of Ambolley's mid 70s work – the raw percussion, punchy horns and charismatic vocals – but it's tripped out in really cool ways with the addition of some spacey keys and synth. There's a lot to be said for how elegantly the funky Ghana soul instrumentation and spiritual lyricism blend with bubbling spacey touches, making this his most unique effort in that respect, but it's still funk and soul to the core. Includes "Control", "Woye De Adofo", "Don't Go" and "Mercy Kae Dabi" (both with Eddie Jackson singing), "Take Am Soul" and "The Message (God Is Love)". CD

✨✧ Burnier & CartierBurnier & Cartier (1974) ... LP
RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 24.98
One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. Titles include "Marcante", "Europanema", "Lembrando Ed Kleiger", "Lejos De Mi", "Aldeia Global", and "So Tem Lugar Pra Voce". LP, Vinyl record album

Wickedly cool work from this overlooked Brazilian singer – a record that's got a strong sense of soul in the grooves, and a great sense of imagination in the choice of songs! Celia sings early work by Joyce, Lo Borges, Nelson Angelo, and others – with these shifting arrangements from the likes of Arthur Verocai, Rogerio Duprant, and Jose Briamonte – all in a mish-mash of modes that sometimes echoes the funky styles on EMI/Odeon of the period, sometimes even hits at Tropicalia touches – especially when guitarist Elody is given full run in the music to do his thing! Titles include "Abrace Paul McCartney", "Fotograma", "Adeus Batucada", "To Be", "David", "Durango Kid", "Zozoio Como E Que E", and "Lennon McCartney". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ GentlemenGentlemen (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Smog/Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Freaky funky sounds from The Gentlemen – a Brazilian combo from the early 70s, and one who work in a really dark mix of modes! At some level, the group feel a bit like some of the 60s Jovem Guarda groups – in that they have a bit of an influence from Anglo rock, particularly the more garagey variety. But they're also trippier too – and have that great post-Tropicalia Brazilian mode of reaching out for plenty of styles at once – to really mix things up in a freaky, fuzzy brew! Basslines are especially great – very pronounced, even on the mellower tracks – and there's some cool fuzz on the guitars to keep things from every sounding too clean or polished – particularly on some of the longer tracks, which feature great psych-styled jamming with the organ as well! Titles include "Vazio", "Sorriso Selvagem", "Vestido Branco", "Uma Voz Outra Voz", "O Embarque", "Eu Juro", "Isso E Amor", and "Agora Estou Livre". LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (180 gram deluxe 40th anniversary edition) ... LP
Pride/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) LP, Vinyl record album
(Super-heavy 40th anniversary reissue – on the same mirror-style cover as the original, with heavy tip-on cover!)

Akira IshikawaBack To Rhythm ... CD
Sony/Mr Bongo (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Heavy funk from a hip Japanese combo – one that features lots of drums and percussion from leader Akira Ishikawa, plus plenty of guitar, keyboards, and hard-riffing horns! Akira's taking most of his cues here from American funk of the early 70s – work by Incredible Bongo Band, BT Express, and others – but he often serves up the music with a fair bit of conga work at the front of the arrangements, in a way that takes familiar tunes and gives them a much rootsier, earthier kind of groove! The approach is unique, but totally great – and the album's a funk album unlike anything else we can think of – quite unusual even for the experimental Japanese scene of the time. Titles include "Bongo Rock", "Pick Up The Pieces", "Do It Til You're Satisfied", "I've Got To Use My Imagination", "Let's Start", "Love Is The Answer", and "Boogie On Reggae Woman". CD

Soulful UK hip hop from Jungle Brown! The core trio of Ric Flo, MAEAR & Tony Bones comes Full Circle with a sound that leans on a classic jazzy soul inspired hip hop mode, on one hand putting a contemporary spin on a vibe that recalls legends like Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers and De La Soul, but with the live instrumentation and some club soul and housey touches in the production, too, it feels fresh and distinctive, and like they're ultimately following their own hip hop soul muse. Includes "Keep It Moving", "Wicked" feat Fliptrix, "Ikoja" feat Elde, "Huami" with Terri Walker, "Wayside", "Time Ticks", "U & I", "We On" feat Sampa The Great and "Custom Made" feat Ayo The Yung Afrika Pyoneer. Peter KingOmo Lewa ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 21.98
A great one from Nigerian bandleader, composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter King – working in a funkier mode here than on the more jazz and roots based groove of his first record! The highlife sound is still a vital component, but on this one, Peter embraces a harder hitting approach on the percussion end, with some straight up Afro Funk elements that suits it incredibly well. It's got a hypnotic vibe throughout! King handles a lot of the instrumentation himself, including saxes, flute, piano, string, some percussion and the soulful vocals – and the titles include "Omo Lewea", "Yere Africa", "Afro-Funk", "EDA", "AJO", "Congo" and "Ko Dara". Kit SebastianMantra Moderne ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A fuzzy mix of styles from Kit Sebastian – a set that reminds us of that late 90s moment when many artists were inspired by Brazilian Tropicalia, and took that inspiration as a way to blend together sounds from many different modes! The record's got touches of funk, psych, and a range of global elements at play – all with maybe some of the moodier production touches you'd hear from the Clutchy Hopkins generation – served up with vocals that are spoken as much as they're sung, maybe echoing a bit of French styles as well! Kit Sebastian is definitely a great illustration of a younger generation that hardly cares where one border ends and another begins – very happy to jump around the globe in pursuit of a groove, yet never hit you over the head while they're doing it. Titles include "Senden Baska", "Tyranny 20", "Pangea", "Kuytu", "Yanimda Kal", and "With A Sense Of Grace". CD
