Beat Konducta (Madlib)Beat Konducta Vol 1 & 2 – Movie Scenes/Movie Scenes, The Sequel ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. Used ... $7.99
The epic CD compilation of the ever prolific, ever satisfying Madlib's first 2 LPs as Beat Konducta – a instrumental song suite of beats for films that do not exist anywhere but the fevered mind of the genius beatcrafter! 'Lib's production work has always had a bit of a filmic groove, and this set collects and assembles the most cinematic of said beats into an (unsurprisingly) incredible whole. The soundscapes really kind of run the gamut of his hip hop styles – always soulful, and always funky, whether he's rocking a stone funk or an electro-modeled groove. Honestly, how much longer is it going to take for the mainstream to finally catch up with this genius!?! Collects tracks from the 2 separate volumes of vinyl: "The Comeback (Madlib)", "The Payback (Gotta)", "Face The Sun (Africa)", "Stax (Strings)", "Left On Silverlake (Ride)", "Offbeat (Grooves)", "Pyramids (Change)", "Eternal Broadcaster (Authentic)", "The Rock (Humps)", "Filthy (Untouched)", "Money Hugger (Gold Diggin'", "Black Mozart (Opus II)", "Snake Charmer (Heads Up)", "African Walk (Zamunda)", "The Forest (Greens)", "Outerlimit (Space Ho)" and more! ✨✧ Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus (2CD expanded edition) ... CD
Abkco, 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.98
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, "Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Plus, this double-length version has unreleased tracks "Warmup Jam" and "Revolution (rehearsal)" by The Dirty Mac, "Leaving Trunk" and "Corinna" by Taj Mahal, and the odd symphonic works "Ritual Fire Dance" and Mozart's "Sonata In C Major" by Julius Katchen. VariousShapes & Shadows – Psychedelic Pop & Other Rare Flavours From The Chapter One Vaults 1968 to 1972 ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99
Really great work from an overlooked label – the short-lived Chapter One imprint, from the UK scene at the end of the 60s – a surprising powerhouse of pop psych at the time! The company was headed by Les Reed – who we love for his soundtrack and instrumental records – and although the notes aren't clear on the production credits, we're betting that many of these gems have Reed's helping hand in the studio – in ways that take all the good ideas of these small groups and solo artists, and push them forward with even more focus and flair – a bit like the way that jazzy John Cameron did with other British acts of the time. The music's never all-out fuzz, nor sugary pop – and it's also very different than US Sunshine Pop of the period – with perhaps a bit more masculine swagger and confidence overall. Titles include "Mozart Versus The Rest" and "Lucky Sunday" by Episode Six, "What's It All About" and "Your Turn To Die" by Putney Bridge, "Lifetime" and "Courtyards Of Castile" by The Bliss, "Bother John" by Brother John, "Lover's Congregation" by The Matchmakers, "You've Got Your Troubles" by The Californians, "Sharkey" by Christopher, and "Spring Never Came Twice" by Jason Cord. ✨✧ Francis LaiLove Story ... LP
Paramount, 1970. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A soundtrack masterpiece from French maestro Francis Lai – a film score that's maybe even more globally famous than his work for A Man & A Woman! The style here is quite European, despite the American fame of the movie – and Lai has no trouble blending a sense of light melody with groovier elements – in the manner that the French and Italian soundtrack giants did so well back in the 60s, and which was such a great contrast to Hollywood modes of earlier years! Strong instrumental elements include cool use of harpsichord, echoey piano, and lilting strings – and even the record's few bits borrowed from Bach and Mozart come off sounding pretty cool too. Titles include "Theme From Love Story", "Skating In Central Park", "Snow Frolic", "I Love You Phil", "The Long Walk Home", and "Bozo Barrett". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bernard Purdie (Pretty Purdie)Stand By Me (Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get) ... LP
Mega/Flying Dutchman, Early 70s. Very Good- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent mix of soul, jazz, and funk from Bernard "Pretty" Purdie – and a record that's kind of the summation of the entire Flying Dutchman groove of the early 70s! By the time of this 1971 recording, Purdie had played on a host of classic soul and jazz sides from the 60s – and that long tradition of work is drawn on strongly in the set, which features guest appearances from the likes of Harold Wheeler, Blue Mitchell, Gil Scott-Heron, Chuck Rainey, Cornell Dupree, Seldon Powell, and Norma Jenkins. About half the tracks are instrumental versions of soul tracks – and a few feature vocals, either by Purdie, Norman Matlock, or Gil Scott-Heron. Heron does a very hip track called "Artificialness", and other tracks include "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", "Modern Jive", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "It's Too Late", and the mad mad number "Funky Mozart", which has a great break! ✨✧ RaekwonOnly Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt 2 ... CD
IHR/EMI, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long awaited Cuban Linx Pt 2 from Raekwon – and one of those late model Wu Tang efforts that reminds us of how vital the Wu Tang were in their prime, as well as how sharp the still are when the moons align and the pieces fall into place! OBFCL Pt 2 is indeed one of those rare newer Wu sets that stands up proudly with the first wave. Sure, it's might not be an eternal classic, but the best stuff here is incredible. Rugged & raw, with intricate crack game noir from a master. 22 tracks in all: the bone chilling J Dilla beat backed gem "House Of Flying Daggers" feat Inspectah Deck, Ghostface and Meth, "Sonny's Missing" (produced by Pete Rock), "Cold Outside" feat Ghostface, "Black Mozart" feat RZA & Inspectah Deck, "Catalina" feat Lyfe Jennings and "About Me" (both produced by Dr Dre), "We Will Rob You" feat Slick Rick, Masta Killa & GZA, "Kiss The Ring" feat Inspectah Deck & Masta Killa, "10 Bricks" feat Cappadonna & Ghostface and many more. ✨✧ Friends & NeighborsWhat's Next? ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Friends & Neighbors have really deepened their voice for this wonderful album – definitely showing us what's next, as they move past their initial inspiration from Ornette Coleman, and open up in modes that are completely their own! Some of the best passages here have this rich, melodic, almost majestic statement from the trumpet of Thomas Johansson and tenor of Andre Roligheten – beautifully bold yet fluid players together – but also able to crackle with energy when the solo passages open up – driven on nicely by Oscar Gronberg on piano, Jon Rune Strom on bass, and Tollef Ostvang on drums. The bass is especially strong – poised in the structure to really explode the sound – and titles include "Influx", "Headway Heat", "Thorlief's Blues", "Mozart", "Kubrick's Rude", and "WLB". CD

John GraasJazz-Lab 1 ... LP
Decca, 1955. Very Good ... $14.99
A classic session from the second wave of LA cool jazz of the 50s – headed up by French horn player John Graas, a player as important to his instrument as Gerry Mulligan was to the baritone sax! Like Mulligan, Graas was working with an instrument that you might normally think of as clunky – but he managed to swing with an incredibly fluid style – bringing the French horn into jazz with amazing skill, and working with groups of top-shelf LA players in a tightly arranged style that crackled with energy! Graas is working here in a slightly experimental "lab" style – with larger groupings that include well-suited LA soloists like Herb Geller, Bob Enevoldsen, Dave Pell, Marty Paich, Howard Roberts and Jimmy Giuffre. 10 tracks in all, including "Canon Ball", "Friar Tuck", "Minor Call", "Le Chasse", "Mozartesque", "Pick Yourself Up", "ANdante", "Allegretto", "Softly The Horn Blows" and "Lighthouse 6/4". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono small black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some aging and small notes in pencil on back.)
