✨✧ Jeanne LeeConspiracy ... CD
Earthforms/Moved By Sound (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
One of the most obscure albums ever from the amazing singer Jeanne Lee – and that's saying a lot, given how obscure most of her albums are in general! The record has a beautifully poetic feel – a mixture of songs, improvisations, and some spoken passages too – set to fantastic improvisation from a group of players that includes Sam Rivers on soprano, tenor, and flute; Gunter Hampel on piano, vibes, alto, and flute, Jack Gregg on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – plus guest work from Mark Whitecage on alto, and both Perry Robinson and Allan Praskin on clarinet. There's some of the spirituality of a Strata East recording here, mixed with some of the more open modes of the New York loft jazz scene too – and titles include "Sundance", "Yeh Come T Be", "Jamaica", "Subway Couple", "The Miracle Is", "Your Ballad", "Angel Chile", and "Conspiracy". Maliks Emerging Force Art TrioTime & Condition ... CD
EFAE/Moved By Sound (UK), 1982. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A brilliant moment as a leader from saxophonist Maurice Malik King – a member of the St Louis underground in the 70s, but one who never saw the same sort of fame as contemporaries who left the city for New York and beyond – yet who continued to create some incredible music far away from the limelight! The early 80s set is a great example of the way the more sophisticated, sensitive moments of the loft jazz world of the 70s were taken to farther local scenes in the US, and allowed players to continue the journey with their own very personal levels of expression – something that's definitely the case here as King crafts these beautiful long lines on alto alongside the bass of Zimbabwe Nkenya and percussion of Qaiyim Shabazz. There's a very special sound to the whole thing – a mode that's every bit as unique as the Ritual Trio up in Chicago, yet every different too – as you'll hear on cuts that include "In Between Space", "Music To Me", "In Search Of Spirits Passed & Present", and "When Force Meet". ✨✧ Plastic People Of The UniversePrague – Egon Bondy's Happy Hearts Club Banned ... LP
Guerilla/Moved By Sound (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 39.99
An amazing avant session from the Czech scene of the 70s – and a record that may well be one of the most important to come out of the Eastern Bloc during the decade! Plastic People Of The Universe are a group who managed a legend that went way past their very tight national boundaries – kind of a secret global sense of attention that was spread through the intellectual underground, and forever cemented with this masterpiece of music! The album effortlessly shifts between free jazz, avant experimentation, art rock, and other mode used in these dark and powerful ways – a strong-burning torch that let the world know that Czech innovation was alive and well, even during years of strong Soviet oppression. Instrumentation mixes alto sax, theremin, claviphone, guitar, violin, and double drums – and titles include "The Wondrous Mandarin", "Look At You, All Sound Asleep", "Past My Window", "Constipation", and "Toxica". A masterful moment as a leader from bassist Sirone – one of his only albums in the lead, and a very different set than some of his work with the Revolutionary Ensemble! There's an intimate vibe going on here, but one that's still very powerful, and definitely in the best spirit of the loft jazz generation – as Sirone mixes his bass with flute from James Newton, cello from Muneer Bernard Fennell, and percussion from Don Moye – used on long tracks that are plenty free and improvised, yet still retain a lyrical sense of beauty. Johnny RichardsSomething Else Again (aka Something Else By Johnny Richards) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good+ ... $0.99 3.99
Some of the best work ever from one of the most under-acknowledged jazz composers and arrangers of the 50s! Johnny Richards is probably best known for his recordings with Stan Kenton in the early part of the decade – but when he moved out on his own, he developed a tremendous sound that was even richer, even more full of color and tone than Kenton's own – and which was often done without any arch-modern tones, yet still fresh and free of cliche. The album's one of Richards' first as a leader – and features a wonderful lineup filled with top-shelf players – including Charlie Mariano on alto, Richie Kamuca on tenor, Stu Williamson and Pete Candoli on trumpets, and Frank Rosolino and Milt Bernhardt on trombones – all players who really bring a bold sort of energy to Johnny's vibrant arrangements. The sax work alone is tremendous – cutting with a beautiful edge across the larger charts – and titles include "Waltz Anyone", "Turn Aboot", "Band Aide", "Dimples", and "Burrito Borracho". Sound Dimension, Soul Vendors, Brentford Rockers, & OthersVersion Dread – Dub Specialist ... CD
Studio One, Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... About August 20, 2023 (delayed)
A heady set of tracks from the legendary Studio One – served up here in a set that include both alternate "version" takes of famous vocal tunes, originally issued as b-sides on vintage 45s – plus some of the more complicated dubs that came along once reggae production moved into the multi-track years! The set's a strong testament to the core fitness of Studio One productions – as there was often such strong roots to the tracks, that the same elements could easily yield more genius, but in a completely different direction – one that was often headier and heavier than the original tune! The work together created a classic Studio One full length when first issued like this – and titles include "Fire Coal Version", "Please Be True Version", "Version Dread", "Train Is Coming (part 2)", "Surfing (extended mix)", and "Pickup Version" by Sound Dimension; "Things A Come Up To Dub" and "Born To Dub" by Soul Vendors; "Never Give Version (ext mix)" by The New Establishment, "Creation Version" by Winston & The New Establishment, "Armagideon Version" by Wiillie & The Brentford Rockers, "Give Me This Version" by The Heptones & Sound Dimension, ""Hold Me Baby (part 2)" by Basil Daley, "It Deep (part 2)" by Lloyd Robinson & Brentford Disco Set, and "Natty Rub A Dub" by Cornel & The Brentford Rockers. ✨✧ Everly BrothersDown In The Bottom – The Country Rock Sessions 1966 to 1968 (Hit Sound/Sing/Roots/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Warner/RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD set ... Out Of Stock
Three overlooked gems by the Everly Brothers – all very different than their early hits, and very much in the hippest territory the duo would ever hit! First up is The Hit Sound Of The Everly Brothers – a really amazing little album, and not a set of the pair's earlier hits, but instead an all new recording that has the duo moving into rootsier modes that rub shoulders with the same country rock territory of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers! In truth, Don and Phil Everly are probably more important to the rise of the sound than anyone else – as their early work took a bluegrass harmony style, and moved it onto the rock charts – yet here, they almost seem to move backwards, and nod back to their roots – while still showcasing plenty of electric guitar in the mix. Most tunes are hits by other artists, but transformed with very hip late 60s Warner presentation – think Beau Brummels on Bradley's Barn – and titles include "Devil's Child", "Legend In My Own Time", "I'm Movin On", "Let's Go Get Stoned", "She Never Smiles Anymore", and "Sea Of Heartache". Sing is a record that has The Everly Brothers in a completely different mode than before, as you might guess from their look on the cover – a record that has Don and Phil moving into some very cool rootsy territory – really opening the door towards a generation of country rock to come, but at a level that reminds us that they maybe got the whole thing going in the first place! Production is in a very cool late 60s Warner Brothers mode – echoes of folk, psych, and sunshine in the mix – but all handled with this mature style that's at once sophisticated, yet completely down to earth – in a set of original tunes by the brothers, plus some gems from Terry Slater too – completely wonderful music that includes "Bowling Green", "A Voice Within", "I'm Finding It Rough", "Do You", "Mary Jane", "It's All Over", and "Talking To The Flowers". Roots is sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. 3CD set features lots more bonus tracks – including "When Eddie Comes Home", "Empty Boxes", "Milk Train", "Lord Of The Manor", "My Elusive Dreams", "You're Just What I Was Looking For Today", "Omaha", "Mr Soul", Shop Girl", "Human Race", "A Little Bit Of Crazy", "Nothing But The Best", and "Love Of The Common People". Tohru AizawaTachibana ... LP
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99 48.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". Art BlakeyMosaic (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 28.99 On October 20, 2023
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Graham BondHoly Magick/We Put Our Magick On You ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), 1970/1971. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Two very unusual albums from the great Graham Bond – back to back in a single set! Holy Magick is quite spiritual, almost supernatural at times – very much what you'd expect from the cover and title! The record's light years away from Bond's British beat group work of a few years before – and has a quality that almost mixes headier rock influences with the spiritualism of the post-Coltrane generation – as the record almost goes farther in a direction that was somewhat initiated by Albert Ayler's more rock-like leanings at the end of his life. Many numbers have chorus vocals rising up behind Bond's lead – and while his own work on alto sax is somewhat displaced by strong use of guitar on many tracks, there's still a fair bit of jazzy elements going on in the mix – particularly on side two, which features Graham laying down some strong lines on the Hammond. Titles include "Aquarius Mantra", "Praise City Of Light", "12 Gates To The City", "Invocation To The Light", "The Qabalistic Cross", "The Pentagram Ritual", "The Holy Words", "The Judgement", and "The Magician". Holy Magick is an equally unusual record from a very unusual player! Altoist Graham Bond had a long and varied career before he made this groovy rock/jazz album in the early 70s. He started as a committed Brit modernist, playing in Don Rendell's early group, then moved into the Beat Group era, with his Graham Bond Organization that featured him on organ and alto. This session recorded with his group Magick shows a similar extension from the Beat Group sound that was taken by Brian Auger – lots of longer jamming cuts, still with the R&B tinged jazzy playing at its base, but with spiritual jazz on the vocals at times, and almost a bit of prog as well. The heart of the whole thing's still nice and jazzy, though – and titles include "Druid", "Ajama", "Forbidden Fruit", and "Moving Towards The Light". CD

Duane EddyDance With The Guitar Man/Twangin Up A Storm ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1963. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A pair of RCA albums from Duane Eddy – back to back on a single CD! Dance With The Guitar Man is an early classic from the time when Duane Eddy moved over to RCA Records – still plenty of guitar in the mix, some great production supervised by Lee Hazlewood, and added vocals mixed into the session by Anita Kerr! The approach is slightly more pop than some of Eddy's earliest material, but still filled with that trademark sound that made him such a guitar innovator – on titles that include "The Scrape", "Dance With The Guitar Man", "Creamy Mashed Potatoes", "Waltz Of The Wind", "Loco Locomotion", "Spanish Twist", and "Nashville Stomp". Twangin Up A Storm is a cool little album that has Duane Eddy stepping away from the production world of Lee Hazlewood, and working instead with a young David Gates – who actually brings some surprisingly groovy elements to the music! There's chorus vocals on the record at times, but used in a way that never overwhelms the guitar – and Eddy gets in plenty of those twangy licks that he does so well, and still contributes the kind of original material that really keeps things interesting! Titles include "Guitar Child", "All You Gave To Me", "Giddy Goose", "Beach Bound", "Mr Guitar Man", "Blowin Up A Storm", "Guitar'd & Feathered", and "My Baby Plays The Same Old Song On His Guitar All Night Long". With a lineup like that, you might expect a bit of a Modern Jazz Quartet approach – but these guys have moved way past that, and are instead in the warmer, more expressive territory opened up by the Japanese piano scene of the 70s – working in a well-recorded format that sparkles with plenty of warmth and relaxed imagination. Crucial cuts in the development of New Orleans soul – served up here by a singer who was instrumental in setting up the new sound of the city in the 60s! Bobby Marchan's a singer who really got his start during the soul years, unlike some of the R&B contemporaries that moved into New Orleans soul – and right from the start, he had a lean, raw style that was perfect for the new groove that was setting the world on fire – presented here on rare recordings for the Ace label in Mississippi, where he worked with Huey Smith as well – and on tracks recorded up in New York for the legendary Fire Records label of Bobby Robinson – but which were every bit as crucial as material recorded in the Crescent City to the legacy of the Nola groove! The package features 36 tracks in all, including some rare alternate takes – and titles include "Booty Green", "Snoopin & Accusin", "You're Still My Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "I Need Some One", "Yes It's Written All Over Your Face", "Things I Used To Do (parts 1 & 2)", "Look At My Heart", "Give A Helping Hand", "Chickee Wah Wah", "Quit My Job", "Loberta", "Tiddley Wink", "Rockin Behind The Iron Curtain", "I'll Never Let You Go", "Little Girl Of Mine", and "Hush Your Mouth". The performance features a small core group – acoustic piano from group leader Matthias Vogt, mixed with guitar, bass, and drums – plus a range of saxes and flute from Oliver Leicht, whose contributions here really deepen the sound! The lovely Inga Luhning sings on a number of tracks – with a warmly soulful feel that's great, and much more unified than the mix of singers you might have heard on the earliest projects from the group – continuing the great sound she brought forth on the Expansion record. Re:Jazz have moved way past their initial gimmick by this point – and the album has them working as a really tight ensemble who mix together jazz and soul for a contemporary audience – recorded here with a beautifully crisp feel. A beautiful little record from the Brazilian scene – served up by a trombonist who's got a great ability to mix Brazilian rhythms, jazzy grooves, and American soul! The approach is one that you might recognize from contemporary trombonist Raul DeSouza, who moved to the US in the 70s, and cut some great records for Capitol – but Zeca's working here back in Brazil, with a vibe that's much closer to the core – and adding in all these raspy soul vocals that sound completely sublime next to the upbeat instrumentation on the record! The set's heavy on keyboards, and has a nicely jazzy vibe – one that you may recognize from the title track's showing up in some great Ed Motta collections over the years. In fact, there's a quality here that's not far from Ed's more recent AOR tribute recordings – as you'll hear on titles that include "Boa Nova", "Papo Coracao", "Rota-Mar", "Exilio De Coracao", "Em Busca De Mim", and "Gavea Um Beijo De Cinema". Yet few have ever done the job as well as this collection – because in the hands of Ace/Kent Records, the music finally gets proper historical context – moved past the jargon of the East LA in crowd, and presented with great sound, and the kind of detailed notes that really get at the special qualities that made the west coast soul scene so different than the east in the 60s! The set list is superb – fantastic mellow soul tracks that are perfect, even if you don't care about this history – and the set features 14 titles that include "Someone" by The Lovers, "Here It Comes" by The Persians, "That's The Way Our Love Is" by The Radiations, "It's Not That Easy" by Reuben Bell & The Casanovas, "No Doubt About It" by The Esquires, "What Am I Going To Do" by the Houston Outlaws, "So Much In Love" by The Exceptions, "Please Say It Isn't So" by Lee Williams & The Cymbals, "Somebody Please" by The Vanguards, "Someone" by The Lovers, "Follow Your Heart" by The Manhattans, and "Settle Down" by Little Ben & The Cheers. 180g (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99
A really fantastic entry in this really great series – one that shows just how strongly the spirit of invention continued in the world of Japanese music as it moved into the 80s! As with previous volumes, the work here is a unique hybrid of influences from American and Japanese sources – partly based in jazz, but also with a fair bit of funk and soul too – modes that are used more directly here than on some of the more polished city pop work of the time – which means that if you like the sweet sound of American electric jazz funk of the late 70s, you'll find plenty to love here too! All cuts are from very rare albums issued by Columbia and Victor back in the day – and titles include "Kare Niwa Kanawanai" by Mizuki Kyama, "Sweet Soul Music" by Hitomi Tohyama, "Ame" by Yumi Sato, "Ojosan Ote Yawaraka Ni" by Kiyohiko Ozaki, "Kimono" by Tetsuo Sakurai, "Friday Night (ext dance mix)" by Jadoes, "Rainy Driver" by Hitomi Tohyama, and "Hello Suisei" by Sentimental City Romance. Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tighter sound than before for The Bar-Kays – that lean approach to funky grooves that some of their contemporaries were hitting as the 80s moved on – yet still served up here by the full ensemble with a relatively fresh feel overall. Amidst the beats and keyboards, there's still lots of nice funky inflections on bass and guitar – often handled in a skittish mode that energizes things nicely, especially alongside the more electro-styled vocals. The vibe of the record is definitely in keeping with the cover – but in the best way possible – and titles include "Dangerous", "Dirty Dancer", "Make Believe Lover", "Freakshow On The Dance Floor", and "Sexomatic". As with Green's previous set for Hi, the album's produced by Al himself, and not Willie Mitchell – in a style that's a bit rougher, chunkier, and almost funkier than the sound that Mitchell had been giving Al as the 70s moved on. Tunes have a nice snapping feel overall, and a lot heavier soul vibe than you might expect for the time – making the record a nice lost sleeper in Green's classic Hi Records catalog! Way more than just an anthology of work by Instant Funk – and instead a massive 5CD set that features all 7 of the group's albums for Salsoul – plus lots of bonus tracks too! Instant Funk first came to fame as one of the key studio combos behind the sound of Philly International in the mid 70s – but when the Salsoul/Gold Mind imprint got rolling, the group moved over to that label and recorded a great run of hard-grooving albums! And while the "funk" in their name isn't the same sort as you'd imagine from deep funk or funky 45s, Instant Funk definitely have a tightly-crafted sense of musicianship that made them one of the best groups working on the east coast disco scene in the 70s – an ability to focus in on a groove and ride it out over a range of tasty riffs and changes! The massively overstuffed package features the full albums Get Down With The Philly Jump, Instant Funk, Witch Doctor, The Funk Is On, Looks So Fine, Instant Funk V, and Kinky – plus bonus tracks that include "Float Like A Butterfly (parts 1 & 2)", "I Got My Mind Made Up (7" version)", "Slap Slap Lickety Lap (7" version)", "Bodyshine (7" version)", "I Got My Mind Made Up (special 12" disco version)", "Crying (7" version)", "It Ain't Reggae (7" version)", and "Witch Doctor (7" version)". Kanye's tightest, most heavily synth soaked set yet – and possibly the best – a leap ahead for his evolving sound! Graduation gleams and shines more than it bounces on the bottom end, and if his LP titles to date overtly suggest that this caps off a trilogy – it really goes beyond the title – it's POST Graduation! By the end of Late Registration Kanye was dabbling in hip hop symphonies (for the better) with a few too many skits, but this one's all laser beam efficiency with a human heartbeat. Kanye's moved on, well past our expectations anyway, and he better not call the next one Class Reunion. A bunch of these cuts could rule several radio formats, and they sound great in the headphones, too. To tell the truth, any modern hip hop record with a big fat (and surely expensive) Steely Dan sample is going get an automatic recommendation from us, but Graduation works for us for many more reasons than that alone. Well done, Kanye! "Good Morning", "Champion", the Daft Punk-ed hit "Stronger", "I Wonder", "Good Life", "Can't Tell Me Me Nothing", "Barry Bonds" with Lil Wayne, "Drunk And Hot Girls" with Mos Def, "Flashing Lights" with Dwele, "Everything I Am" with DJ Premier, "Homecoming" and "Big Brother". One of the slickest of Dave Matthews' funk records from the 70s – but still pretty darn nice! Matthews was the mainman behind the legendary funk group The Grodeck Whipperjenny, and a key arranger in James Brown's sound of the Polydor years – but by this time, he moved into smoother club-type jazz, of the sort he'd penned for Idris Muhammad and other artists on the Kudu label. However, Matthews' always had a talent for the funky groove – and even these otherwise pop disco numbers shine with a musical intensity that surprises us – especially at moments like the funky drumbreak on "You Keep Me Hanging On", the freaky moog on "Shoogie Wanna Boogie", the funky bass solo on "California Dreaming", and the excellent keyboard work on "Gotta Be Where You Are". DK Disc/Sonorama (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Freaky keyboards and fuzzy saxophone – played by the team of Dieter Seelow and Peter Mayer, working here in a rare bit of funk from the early 70s German scene! The record's got a sound that's very much in the madder side of the MPS spectrum at the time – jazz influenced by a bit of fuzzier rock elements – heard to good effect on Seelow's amplified, processed saxophone lines – and on some of the heavier organ moments from Mayer. The sound is wide-open, but never too free or jamming – clearly inspired by the hipper American soul jazz of the late 60s – the side of the scene that started with electric Eddie Harris, and moved into weirder Melvin Jackson moments – both players who are a good comparison here, as the groove definitely shows a love of the electrified music that Harris and Jackson made together. Remaining instrumentation includes electric bass and drums – so the overall sound is quite spare – and titles include the massive three-part "Mr Dynamite", plus "Masquerade","Danny's Walk", "The Swinger From Rio", and "With A Little Help From My Friends". A treasure trove of rare work from reedman Gigi Gryce – one of the most important talents of the 50s, presented here in a range of unissued sides from the best years of his career! The CD's overflowing with amazing material – some live dates, and some unissued studio material as well – all done in that perfect second period style of Gryce's career – the point when he moved past the tighter modernism of early years, and really opened up with this amazingly soulful sound! His alto work is impeccable – unlike anyone else we can think of on the instrument – very focused and crisp, yet wonderfully warm and human as well – with support on most numbers from excellent sidemen Richard Williams on trumpet and Richard Wyands on piano – two players who always seemed to drive Gigi onto new heights! Material includes 4 tracks from a 1961 Birdland broadcast – also with Eddie Costa on on vibes – then 2 more from a 1961 recording session also with Costa. Then there's 6 more cuts from an unissued 1960 session – and all three of these feature Williams and Wyands. The set's rounded out by material from a 1957 Signal Records party – featuring a group with Cecil Payne on baritone sax and Duke Jordan on piano. All cuts have been lovingly remastered, with the usual great sound we love from Uptown – and the set features 70 minutes of music, 18 tracks that include "Blues In Bloom", "Down Home", "A Premonition Of You", "Dancing The Gigi", "I'll Walk Alone", "Sonor", "All The Things You Are", "Man Of Moods", and "Movin". A fantastic album by Slide Hampton – one of his best, and one of his rarest! Like a number of other important players of his generation, Slide got his start on the American scene, but moved to Europe during the 1960s – where he really began to open up. This excellent session was recorded in Paris in 1962, and it features Slide leading an octet through some of the most complicated arrangements of his early years. Players include some great underground American players, like trumpeter Richard Williams, bassist Butch Warren, tenorist George Coleman, and trombonist Benjamin Jacobs-El, whose frequent co-tromboning with Hampton always made for an excellent sound. As on Slide's Atlantic sides, the group swings like a mofo – staying tight on the choruses, but really breaking out from the pack with some amazing solo work. An excellent set from Julius Hemphill – one that has him working in trio formation with Abdul Wadud on cello and Famoudou Don Moye on percussion – players that seem to be a perfect fit for his spirit on the date! There's a slightly loft jazz feel to the record, but the overall sound is a bit more put-together – composed by Hemphill with thoughtful, complex lines on some of the tunes – in ways that dig back to his roots in feeling, yet also show the increasing sophistication of his sound as the 70s moved on. At the time these sides were released, we remember wincing that Jack had moved onto Concord Records – often home of the softer side of jazz. But as the records came out, we were impressed at the strength of their grooves – and the way that McDuff could hold onto a classic Hammond-heavy sound in the Concord setting – and never give into some of the sleepier modes of the label. Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of greatness from British folk rock legend John Renbourn – all of his late 60s solo work, done before moving on to greater fame in Pentangle! First up is There You Go – a rare one from singer Dorris Henderson and future Pentangle founder John Rensbourn! Florida born, LA raised singer Dorris Henderson moved to London in 1965 and was soon singing London's folk clubs, where she met Rensbourn. A solid mix of traditionals and then contemporary folk songs – stripped down and honest takes on "Saly Free And Easy", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Mr Tamborine Man", "Going To Memphis", Something Lonesome", "Mist On The Mountain" and more. This edition includes bonus tracks from a rare 45 – "Hangman" and "Leaves That Are Green". Next is the self-titled John Renbourn from 1965 – a set that would not only establish John's legacy for years to come, but also have a very strong impact upon the role of the guitar on the British scene too! The album's definitely in a mode that owes something to an American folk legacy – but it also really breaks from the past with unusual phrasings and colorings in Renbourn's guitar – certainly with an ear towards ancient English modes, but also at once very fresh and contemporary – a strong precursor to the waves of new acoustic talents that would flow from the UK a few years later, but maybe even more revolutionary – given that John's mostly just working here with his guitar and voice. Bert Jansch adds guitar to a few tracks – and titles include "Song", "Down On The Barge", "Plainsong", "Judy", "Beth's Blues", "Blue Bones", "Train Tune", "Winter Is Gone", and "Noah & Rabbit". Bert & John is a hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Another Monday is maybe the most obscure album in the collection – a set that is mostly instrumental, with some completely fantastic work by Renbourn on guitar – but which also features a bit of guest vocals from singer Jacqui McShee – whose warmer presence next to John really makes for a nice pairing. The album's as powerful as it is subtle, really beautiful in its sense of variety – with titles that include "Buffalo", "One For William", "Lost Lover Blues", "Another Monday", "Day At The Seaside", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", and "Waltz". Watch The Stars is another great collaboration with Dorris Henderson – an American singer, but one who moved to London in the 60s – where she cut this rare gem with guitarist John Renbourn! The album's got a righteous vibe that's hipper than the usual folk set – with some traditional tunes and some contemporary material – recorded with that amazing phrasing that made Renbourn's guitar so distinct right from the start, with lots of those jazzy currents we love so much – and which really fit the creative vocal approach of Henderson! Dorris also plays some autoharp, and there's a bit of bass in the backings – although overall the main focus here is on Renbourn's guitar and Henderson's vocals. Titles include "Come Up Horsey", "God Bless The Child", "Watch The Stars", "30 Days In Jail", "Mosaic Patterns", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", and "There's Anger In This Land". Sir John A Lot Of is perhaps one of the best-known albums from British guitar legend John Renbourn – as it was issued widely in the US, and kept in print for a surprisingly long time over the years! The approach here is slightly different than Renbourn's previous records – a bit in the image presented by the cover, although with maybe not as slavish a sound – as John just uses the whole thing to go a bit more ancient than before, in ways that echo the time travel that the whole British folk scene was taking as the 70s approached. The tunes are done in ways that are really beautiful – still lots of the incredible guitar work that made Renbourn such a standout on the scene – plus flute from jazzman Ray Warleigh, who's very different here than usual – and spare use of finger cymbals, African drums, and glockenspiel by Terry Cox. Titles include "Morgana", "Transfusion", "The Trees They Do Grow High", "Sweet Potato", "Seven Up", and "White Fishes". 6CD box features all records in original artwork sleeves, with a booklet of notes – and bonus tracks that include "Message To Pretty", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Lucky Thirteen", "Blues Run The Game", "The Wildest Pig In Captivity (alt)", "Can't Keep From Crying", "Transfusion (alt)", and "The Leaves Are Green". This cool new CD brings together 15 small-combo recordings made by Shihab and other members of the CBBB (like Fats Sadi, Benny Bailey, Francy Boland, and Jimmy Woode) during the mid 60's. All the material was recorded by CBBB manager/producer Gigi Campi, and none of the stuff's been issued before as far as we can tell. The groove is nice and swinging, with excellent rolling grooves by Sadi on bongos and vibes. During the 60s, the city's blues took on some of the transformations that were happing in Chicago – with similar roots in a southern scene that moved into a hipper, more urban environment – where blues phrasing was more electrified, and mixed with influences from soul and jazz – often with some funky hybrids along the way! CD

One of the few albums ever issued as a leader by Monk Higgins – a genius musician/arranger who first got his start on the Chicago scene of the 60s, then moved out to the west coast at the end of the decade – where he also helped inject some funky new sounds into the Blue Note label! This set's got a vibe that echoes some of that work – particularly Monk's albums with trumpeter Blue Mitchell – but there's also maybe a loftier vibe that reflects Higgins' ties to the Chess/Cadet label, where he cut some fantastic funk singles, both under his name and with other artists too. The approach here takes a core funky jazz group and adds in just the right touches of strings – with a sound that reminds us a lot of some of the Richard Evans' genius work for Cadet, but with maybe a bit of a Cali vibe too. Excellent trio stuff, with a sound that's a bit straighter than Hill's later work, but still pretty out there at times. A young Malachi Favors is playing bass, and James Slaughter is on drums. The recording is a brilliant example of how the Chicago musicians of this time were pushing a lot of modernist ideas under the guise of more sedate material. Listen to the track "Chiconga", which has weird bass and percussion work, and which sounds, at times, like something that Favors would have done with the Art Ensemble! Other tracks include "So In Love", "Body And Soul", "Old Devil Moon", "Spring In Here", "Penthouse Party", and "That's All". CD

✨✧ Jean-Pierre Massiera & OthersMidnight Massiera – The B-Music Of Jean-Pierre Massiera ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mad music from Jean-Pierre Massiera – the legendary producer who was steeped in the hippest sounds of the French scene of the 60s, then moved to Quebec to forge a wild style that was all his own! Jean-Pierre rarely ever issued work under his own name – and instead recorded under a host of pseudonyms, or in projects with other artists – which made for an ever-shifting array of new names, new sounds, and unusual records – a good deal of which are collected here in this set! The package really focuses on the freakiest side of Massiera's sound – the fuzzy, electric qualities that were first picked up from a European scene that included early prog, analog electronics, and hip pop experiments by folks like Pierre Henry or Jean-Claude Vannier – moved well into Massiera's own territory over the course of recordings like this – with lots of weird studio tricks, odd effects, and other hip bits. There's a really funky feel to many of the tracks here – that psyche-funk groove you might find on other Finders Keepers collections – and Andy Votel has written some very copious notes for the package, fully detailing Jean-Pierre's massive (and massively weird!) musical legacy. 18 tracks in all – including "Space Woman" by Herman's Rocket, "Onomatopaeia" by Human Egg, "Bizarre" by Les Chats Renaissance, "Visitors" by Visitors, "Ivresse Des Profondeurs" by SEM Studios, "L'Eletrocute" by Jesus, "Itubo Del Anno" by Basile, "Mao Mao" by The Starlights, "Pop Or Not" by Chico Magnetic Band, "Kriminal Theme" by Les Maledictus Sound, "Egg" by Atlantide, "Sing Sing" by Chris Gallbert, and "Secret La Vielle Dame" by Afterlife. ✨✧ Monday MichiruRoutes (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Geneon (Japan), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
Another top-shelf session from Monday Michiru – one of the few current artists who's been able to hold our attention for so many years, thanks to an ever-deepening quality in her work! Back at the end of the 90s, we were first amazed when Monday moved simpler dance-based work into more complicated singer-songwriter soul – and we've listened in wonder as she's picked up stronger jazz, Latin, Brazilian, and soul influences as the years have gone on – really growing into her own, and maturing wonderfully with age! This album's way way past the early efforts that were so strongly shaped by her co-collaborators – and features production and all original songs by Monday – recorded live in the studio with a warmly glowing quality that matches the righteous vibe of the tunes and the free-soaring spirit of her vocals. If you were ready to get tired of Monday's sound and style, this isn't the album to do it – because each new track is a surprising delight, and makes us fall in love with her work all over again! Titles include "I'm Still Here", "Yellow Light", "Dig Deep", "The Right Time", "Hung Up", "Be Who You Are", "Touch The Sky", "A New Way", and "Philosophy Road". CD also features the bonus track "Sketches Of Myself". CD

Capitol/Mobile Fidelity, 1950s. Near Mint- 16LP ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of wonderful music – a 16 LP box set that features all of Sinatra's albums recorded for Capitol, along with great bonus material! As is well known, Sinatra's Capitol years were his finest – a time when he moved past a simple pop singer into a complicated vocalist with a sense of expression so deep that it lent itself perfectly to the emerging form of the long-playing record. Many of these albums are early "concept" sets by Sinatra, and feature moods and themes that move far beyond simple vocal work – into richly expressive territory that's hardly ever been matched again! Arrangers include Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Gordon Jenkins, and Alex Stordhal – and album titles include Come Fly With Me, Come Swing With Me, Songs For Swingin Lovers, In The Wee Small Hours, Where Are You, No One Cares, Come Dance With Me, Songs For Young Lovers, and Point Of No Return. Caetano Veloso at the end of the 70s – still sounding wonderful, but in ways that are quite different from his earliest albums! The sound here is more restrained, and more mature – a beautiful example of the songwriting strength that Veloso evolved as his career moved on – tunes that have a simple, almost elegant brilliance – and which are carried off here by a small backing combo of keyboards, guitar, bass, and percussion. Caetano's vocals have an up-close feel that reminds us of the Qualquer Coisa album – but the overall sound of this set is almost more personal and intimate than that one too. Capitol, Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An ultra-cool set that focuses on one of our favorite easy genres ever – crime jazz! Crime jazz first came to light at the end of the 50s, as Mancini, Morrow, and others penned some incredible music for TV detective shows – tight, jazz-based tunes that really moved past the flowery style of orchestrations that had often been used in the movies and on other crime programs. The crime jazz mode was an instant hit with listeners, and many tunes climbed up the charts – and spawned countless albums of music in the mode. This set brings together 18 tracks from the 50s and 60s – including titles from a wide variety of sources inspired by the crime jazz sound, including a few more famous artists doing their take on the style! Titles include "The Untouchables" by Nelson Riddle, "Dragnet/Room 43" by Ray Anthony, "Thinking Of Baby" by Elmer Bernstein, "I Spy" by Earl Hagen, "Walk On The Wild Side" by Si Zentner, "The Silencers" by Vikki Carr, "Music To Be Murdered By" by Jeff Alexander with Alfred Hitchcock, "Harlem Nocturne" by Spike Jones, and "Mission Impossible" by Billy May. Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. A great 3CD set – with a huge amount of work – music by The Davis Sisters, Gospel Chimes, Jimmy Scott, Roberta Martin Singers, Swindell Brothers, Christones, Gospel Harmonettes Specials, Harmonizing Five, Famous Ward Singers, Blind Boys Of Alabama, Stars Of Faith, Gospel Cavaliers, Staple Singers, The Metro Tones, Betty Hollins, Gene Martin, Swan Silvertones, Artistic Sounds, James Moore, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Brooklyn Skyways, World Wonders, Myrna Summers, Brockingham Ensemble, Prof Charles Taylor, Exciting Supreme Highlights, Highway QCs, Solomon Burke, Genobia Jeter, World Wonders, Edith Moreno, Glenn Jones & The Modulations, Hollywood Stars, James Cleveland, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Sensational Williams Brothers, Gospelaires Of Dayton, Helen Hollins Singers, Edith Moreno, and The 4th Of May. Jazzman (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 32.99
A tremendous entry in this wonderful series – a set that proudly proclaims its contents with the "NOW" on the cover! Back when the Spiritual Jazz series first started on the Jazzman label, the music was mostly relegated to material of the John Coltrane generation and the generation that followed – but in the past decade or so, there's been a huge explosion in new artists that explore the deeper, more righteous currents of jazz – music that's pulled in from the farther reaches of free improvisation, to righteous, message-oriented styles that often mix modal rhythms with more exploratory solo passages. Yet this new generation is hardly slavish to the sounds of Impulse Records – as they've really moved beyond, and have used a globe's worth of influences and new 21st Century concepts to bring fresh spirit to the music – opening things up in ways that have made this new movement one of our greatest sources of inspiration in recent years. This double-length entry is a fantastic overview of the sounds that are currently reshaping the planet – and titles on volume 2 include "Flute Song" by Wildflower, "Slow Sweet Burn" by Abeeku, "Palms To Heaven" by The Cosmic Range, "Nova" by Menagerie, "Avo's Tune" by Teemu Akerblom Quartet, "Paris" by Jonas Kullhammar, "Vessels" by The Jamie Saft Quartet, "What Do I Tell My Children Who Are Black "by Angel Bat Dawid, "Trane's Groove" by Carla Marciano, "For Coltrane" by Steve Reid Foundation, "Empty Streets" by Vibration Black Finger, and "Memory Ritual" by The Pyramids. Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great look at one of our favorite record labels of all time – a company that was one of the first we ever worked together with, back when we started Dusty Groove – and whose music has been a huge inspiration to us for decades! Black Fire is a really special record label from the DC area – not just a jazz imprint, but more of an artistic collective – maybe similar to what Tribe Records was to the Detroit scene of the 70s, but also more open to more soulful sounds too – which is what really makes so many of these tracks so great – as they have a perfect balance between jazz, funk, and soul – kind of that through-line that the Chicago scene had as things moved from Sun Ra, to Phil Cohran, on to the Pharoahs and Earth Wind & Fire! That trajectory is key here – as many of the players were rooted in more avant jazz styles, but were also eager to communicate their message in ways that were more universal – which is why the music here has such lasting appeal over the years – as it's filled with messages of love and peace, life and pride – with an intensity that maybe makes these tracks every bit as important now as when they were first recorded. The best-known group on the set is Oneness Of Juju, but there's work from the whole spectrum of Black Fire artists – tracks that include "Look At The People" by Wayne Davis, "Doin The Carvin For Thabo" by Lon Moshe, "African Rhythms (live 1975)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" by Theatre West, "People" by Experience Unlimited, "Follow Me" by Okyerema Asante, "Third House" by Southern Energy Ensemble, and "Drummers From Ibadan" by Byard Lancaster. Like so many of the harder-edged American rock groups of the time, these guys have moved completely past the blues that inspired their initial sounds – working out plenty of their own inflections on guitar and organ, at a level that's never slavish at all to the roots – and which instead really serves to provide the perfect polish for the nicely sinister vocals on the set! Delmark, 2013. Used ... $7.99
One of the coolest combos working in Chicago these days – a trad jazz group with a really wonderful sound – one of the few modern groups who can really illustrate the improvisational excitement of jazz back in the Windy City scene of the 20s and 30s! These guys have a freshness that you'd never find with other trad combos – maybe an energy that's generated by their youth, or the fact that in the 21st Century we're now so removed from the cliches of the trad revival, folks can start over again and really get things right. Whatever the case, their sound is great – an electrifying revival of modes we never thought we'd like this much from contemporary players. The lineup includes string bass, cornet, clarinet, alto sax, trombone, piano, drums, and banjo – and titles include "The Stampede", "18th & Racine", "I Can't Dance", "Stardust", "Oh Baby", "The Chant", and "Blueberry Rhyme". Strut (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The keyboards of Greg Foat have a really great setting here in a collaboration with Gigi Masin – served up in a style that's maybe more laidback and spacious than before, yet in a way that makes us fall in love with Greg's electric piano lines all over again! Masin's got roots in more ambient sounds, but the record definitely has a jazz approach at the core – plenty of the increasingly sensitive styles that Foat has developed as the years moved on – shifting from an initial role as a guy who could handle vintage keys, to a point where he's really emerged as a more fully-fledged jazz player overall! The blend of keyboards and a larger sonic palette still has plenty of live instrumentation in the mix – different than a project of this sort by an artist like Bugge Wesseltoft – and titles include "London Nights", "Viento Calido", "Your Move", "Sabena", "Leo Theo", "Love Theme", and "Dolphin". Sonet/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
One of the rarest free jazz albums of the European 60s scene – a set that was originally intended for release by Sonet Records, pressed up in test records for the musicians, then denied release because they felt that they'd already moved past the performance! Yet in the space of over 50 years, the music still sounds remarkably fresh – an early, striking, and stunning example of the way that the European avant jazz scene was not only overtaking the American one, but also providing the kind of energy that would be a key inspiration for artists like Albert Ayler or Cecil Taylor! Pianist Tom Prehn offers up a lot of the latter here – boundless piano lines that leap forward into space with a frenzied, yet tuneful approach – followed by tremendous tenor from Frits Krogh, a player we don't know at all – but who blows powerfully and soulfully, at a level that maybe even prefaces some of John Coltrane's more outside material to come. The rest of the group features Poul Ehlers on bass and Finn Slumstrup on drums – and the album features the full "Axiom (parts 1 & 2)" performance from the Sonet album – plus a more contemplative number titled "Percussive Anticipations", recorded by the same group in 1966, and appearing here for the first time ever! Rough and funky piano from Googie Rene – one of the hippest cats on the LA scene of the 50s and 60s! Zebra/BBE (UK), 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
No standards here, as the tracks are all originals – written by reedman Ralph Thomas and the rest of his group – to create the sort of unique little record that really keeps us digging for rare jazz over the years! Thomas grew up in Chicago, where he soaked up the soulful sounds of both the west side and the AACM – but the set was recorded after he'd moved to Los Angeles, at the suggestion of some of his contemporaries – where he was able to bring together some equally inventive players, while also working as part of the same hip scene that included Horace Tapscott and Nate Morgan! Some of the rhythms here recall some of Morgan's music on the Nimbus label, but there's maybe a bit more of a soul current too – with Thomas on alto, tenor, soprano, and flute – amidst guitar, keyboards, drums, flute, and some especially nice percussion – all to craft rhythms that move between spiritual, modal, and more conventionally soulful styles – a vibe that's maybe a bit like some of the 70s Detroit work on the Strata label. Titles include "Spellbound", "Cafe Phillipp", "Big Spliff", "Venice", "EST", "Deloreso", and "Muscavado". LP, Vinyl record album

Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
A much-needed look at the production genius of Martin Rushnet – a UK studio genius who started out in punk, then really helped the scene find new sounds and styles as the 80s moved in! Rushnet is sometimes confused with the other great Martin of the period – producer Martin Hannett – and although his style is a bit different, there is a similarity – as Rushnet, like Hannett, is a bit of an outsider, and really takes a fresh approach to recording the news music of the moment – never trying to drape it in older styles from previous eras, which really allows some of the crispness of the younger acts to really shine through! As the 80s move in, Rushnet also shows a great ear for some of the right electronic touches, yet never in a way that was overly commercial – a balance that really comes out strongly on the second half of the set. As with other entries in this great producer series from Ace, the notes are fantastic – really digging deep into each track, with a 19 title set list that includes "Autonomy" by The Buzzcocks, "Hard Times" by Human League, "Homicide" by 999, "Hold On" by Ian Gomm, "Kiss Me Deadly" by Generation X, "Get A Grip On Yourself" by The Stranglers, "Tonight" by Rachel Sweet, "Guitar Beat" by The Raybeats, "I Could Be Happy (Martin Rushnet rmx)" by Altered Images, "A Way You'll Never Be (12" version)" by Leisure Process, "Working Girl" by The Members, "Beneath The Blue Sky" by The Go Gos, "Breakfast" by The Associates, "Steamhammer Sam" by Intaferon, "Je Suis Passee (7" version)" by Hard Corps, "The Big Sweep (club mix)" by Then Jericho, and "Are You Receiving Me" by XTC. VariousCuba Jazz – Jam Sessions & Descargas 1956 to 1961 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.98
A fantastic look at one of the biggest contributions that Cuba ever made to music in the 20th Century – the rise of the jam session and descarga scene in Havana right before the revolution – a moment that saw an already-great style get even better in the hands of a few key musicians! Afro-Cuban sounds were nothing new to that city, but as the 50s moved on, the players on the scene adopted lots of influences from American jazz – and were really opening up in ways that were as open and expressive as they were fiercely collaborative – moving past the idea of a tighter ensemble with a star leader, and instead bringing together smaller groups with soloists that really got lots of space to do their thing – as did the percussionists, who really drive the music here! Most of the tracks feature some sort of vocals, but also have plenty of standout solos too - and the set features a huge amount of tracks by Cachao in his prime, plus lots more by Julio Gutierrez, Walfredo De Los Reyes, Rolando Aquila, Fajaro, Nino Rivera, and Chico O'Farrill – served up here with a total of 55 tracks on 3CDs. VariousElectronic Jugoton Vol 1 – Synthetic Music From Yugoslavia 1980 to 1989 ... LP
Jugoton/Everland (Germany), 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 39.99
Those are some pretty crabby ladies on the front covers – workers for the Jugoton label, working on quality control – but they're probably not the right audience for the music on this set, which is very cool and groovy – and not the sort that would usually go for the blue-haired set! As you'll guess from the title, the sounds were all created in the 80s – partly following off the British electronic modes of the post-punk years, in both cold wave and new wave styles – then moving into some of the shifting styles as the decade moved on, although still often nicely not really in any sort of too-commercial territory! Given the wealth of Croatian, Serbian, and other talents handled by the label, there's a huge amount going on here – as you'll discover on titles that include "Ti I Ja" by Denis & Denis, "Pocket" by Master Scratch Band, "Kad Je Kraj Blizu" by Parliament, "Palcica" by Mato Dosen & HC Andersen, "On" by Zana, "Devica 69" by Laboratorija, "Zaba" by D'Boys, "Radio Video" by Nicky, and "Harakiri" by Dubravka – plus some short "Jugoton Express" tracks. VariousHigh Note Mento Collection ... CD
High Note/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 24.99
An unusual collection of mento material from Jamaica – a later document of sounds that were initially the first on the path towards rocksteady and reggae! Back in the late 50s, Bermuda had calypso and Jamaica had mento – a style that was similar, but which had a slightly different rhythmic pattern – one that was fused with influences from American soul as the decade moved on, as the blueprint for ska, rocksteady, and later styles too! These recordings are all from the 70s – handled by producer Sonia Pottinger for her High Note label – and show that even in the era of dub and roots, mento was still going strong in Jamaica – although definitely with more contemporary touches that show the growing influence of reggae back on the older form of music. The set's a great look at this moment in the style – done with the usual huge booklet of notes we love from Doctor Bird, filled with rare images and label scans too – and the 2CD set features 46 tracks in all – full albums by King Vupp, The Jolly Boys, and The Prince Brothers – plus more by Sugar Belly, Count Lasher, Baba Brooks, The Dingle Brothers, Marva Moore, and others. ✨✧ Michael Nesmith & The First National BandMagnetic South ... LP
RCA, 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Completely wonderful solo work from Monkee Mike Nesmith – music that almost bears no relationship to his famous TV sounds – save for the fact that Mike's still got all of his charms firmly intact! Yet the approach here is unabashedly country rock – that style that Nesmith was bringing to some of his songs as the 60s moved on, from very credible roots – and served up here by a very cool group that features plenty of steel guitar from OJ Red Rhodes! The tunes are smart, but understated – catchy, but never cloying – almost in the territory of the Byrds or Flying Burrito Brothers, but maybe without the darker corners. Titles include "The Crippled Lion", "Mama Nantucket", "The Keys To The Car", "Hollywood", "Calico Girlfriend", and "Nine Times Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

By this point Cameo had moved in a more slick, radio friendly commercial soul direction, but still had one of the most distinctive sounds around, and besides, this later single is one of our favorites from this period. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ GuyGuy ... LP
MCA/Uptown, 1988. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stone cold classic from Teddy Riley! Forget what you might think about the cliches of New Jack Swing, because this record is a landmark of modern soul, one of the freshest R&B albums from the 80s, and it still sounds great today. After starting things out with Wrecks N Effect, Riley moved over to Guy – who really made his hip-hop heavy New Jack sound work great, because they had much better vocal chops than earlier groups, and they could fuse a tight harmony to the funky sound in style that not only got them loads of airplay (and record sales!), but which inspired a whole generation of American soul. This first album's their best, and it includes lots of nice smooth jammers – like "Spend The Night", "Piece of My Love", "Teddy's Jam", "Groove Me", and "Goodbye Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hamilton De Holanda & Andre MehmariGismonti Pascoal – The Music of Egberto & Hermeto ... CD
Adventure Music, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful tribute to the music of Egberto Gismonti and Hermeto Pascoal – but presented in a fresh style that's very different than the originals! Gismonti and Pascoal were two of Brazil's most inventive composer/musicians of the 70s – both very open to new sounds, new rhythms, and new ways of putting instrumentation together – often with complex larger arrangements that really moved past any sort of simple styles or genre conventions! Here, pianist Andre Mehmari and mandolinist Hamilton De Holanda take things back to basics – and offer up these beautifully intimate readings of tunes by both composers – but with really lively instrumentation that still recalls all the deftness you would have heard from either of the original musicians. Holanda's work on the strings has never been more complex – or more magical – and Mehmari's got a rhythmic pulse and way of serving up colors at the same time – a beautiful style that really comes through on tracks that include "Frevo", "Sao Jorge", "Sete Aneis", "Palhaco", "Fala Da Paixao", "Bebe", and "Loro" – plus a few original tribute numbers by the duo too! And as a special bonus, both Gismonti and Pascoal each guest on one number in the set! CD

✨✧ Greg Foat & Gigi MasinDolphin ... LP
Strut (UK), 2023. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ VariousSpiritual Jazz 6 – Vocals – Modal Esoteric & Progressive Jazz Vocals From Around The World 1960 to 1986 ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great look at a very important side of spiritual jazz in the 60s and 70s – the evolution of jazz vocals, to a point when singers like Abbey Lincoln, Andy Bey, or Leon Thomas brought a whole new sound and soul to the spectrum of jazz! This wonderful package covers lots of key moments from that time – and also unearths some great rare tracks, too – really showing the way that singers of this period moved far far past the styles of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald in the generation before – often using their voices with the same unbridled power as the musicians in these groups, serving up some righteous lyrics and politics in the process! The collection might well be our favorite in this great series so far – and titles include "Imani" by EW Wainwright, "Tears For Johannesburg" by Max Roach, Colors" by Norman Riley, "African Violet" by Sadaka, "The Ladder" by The Singers & Musicians Of Washington High School, "Rain Forest" by Dr Haki R Mahubuti, "African Sunshine" by Eddie Gale, "Reunion (edit)" by Byron Morris & Unity, "Celestial Blues" by Gary Bartz Ntu Troop, "John Coltrane" by Clifford Jordan, and "Spirits Up Above" by Vibration Society. ✨✧ Bar-KaysDangerous ... CD
Mercury/Universal (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
