✨✧ Chris ClarkSoul Sounds ... LP
Motown, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great Motown album from Chris Clark – one of the few white singers ever signed to the label, and a great vocalist at that! Chris has a sound that's quite unique – halfway between Motown soul and some of the soul-inspired pop of the time – particularly that of UK singers like Dusty Springfield and some of her generation. There's a proud, bold sound here – all Motown in the backings, and often done with the kind of tightly-stepping grooves that have made some of Chris' singles big ones on the Northern Soul scene over the years. Titles include "I Want To Go Back There Again", "Day By Day Or Never", "From Head To Toe", "Sweeter As The Days Go By", "Born To Love You Baby", "Love's Gone Bad", and "Whisper You Love Me Boy". VariousComplete Motown Singles Volume 11B – 1971 (limited edition 5CD set) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1971. Used 5 CDs ... $49.99 59.99
Massive Motown from 1971 – the ultra-hip second part of this key year for the monumental label! Motown was going through plenty of changes in 1971 – a year that saw Marvin Gaye's new righteous musical vision, a wave of fresh talent from the west coast, and the label's further push into sounds that went way beyond standard soul music – moves that are summed up beautifully here by artists who include Rare Earth, Popcorn Wylie, Stevie Wonder, Undisputed Truth, The Supremes, PJ, Jackson 5, Bobby Taylor, The Rustix, Jr Walker, Martha Reeves, Virgil Henry, Tom Clay, Diana Ross, Suzee Ikeda, Sunday Funnies, Chuck Jackson, My Friends, Valerie Simpson, Jack Hammer, The Messengers, Lodi, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, and even Bobby Darin! As usual, Hip-O Select have done an amazing job with the package – pulling together 120 tracks that also includes some rare bits not on the official singles, and wrapping the whole thing up in a hardcover book that also features a bonus Michael Jackson 45 in the cover. The book is over 120 pages, with loads of notes, essay material, and rare photos that document this amazing point in the label's history! CD

✨✧ SpinnersTruly Yours – Their First Motown Album With Bonus Tracks – 1963 to 1967 ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first Motown full length record by the Spinners – Original Spinners from '67 – followed by an impeccably well-chosen collection of bonus material! It's excellent stuff – an overlooked album with some very hard to find Motown work by this early version of the legendary Spinners – with lead vocals by Bobby Smith and Edgar Edwards. The tracks have a mixture of sweet and raw harmonies – crafted with an elegantly soulful sound that would later take the group way over the top during the 70s, and which here sounds sublime next to some of the group's Motown contemporaries! The first 12 tracks on this excellent Kent compilation are the Original Spinners tracklist – including "Sweet Thing", "I Cross My Heart", "I'll Always Love You", "Truly Yours", "Like A Good Man Should", "For All We Know", "How Can I", "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Nobody Else But You", "Where Is That Girl", "Tomorrow May Never Come" and "That's What Girls Are Made For". Most of the 14 bonus tracks are previously unreleased masters – revelatory stuff from earlier in the 60s – formative, yet beautifully realized recordings with productions by Harvey Fuqua and Ivy Joe Hunter! Titles include "Darling", "Words Can't Describe", "12 O'Clock", "Just Another Guy", "We're Gonna Be More More Than Friends" and more. CD

Ace (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Think you've heard everything on Motown? Think again – because this sweet little set is filled with unissued 60s recordings by some of the best male singers on the label! The collection is a soul fan's dream come true – as the music here represents some real lost corners of Motown, with sounds that span almost the full stretch of the 60s – and really show the label's greatness at work – because if most of these tracks were recorded by other labels, they would have been pushed as potential hits! There's great work from artists who were just starting out, surprising moments from big names at the time, and a few entries we wouldn't have guessed without looking at the notes – and titles include "Headin North" by Shorty Long, "Only On The Weekend" by The Headliners, "Satisfaction Is Guaranteed" by Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, "Safety Zone" by Marv Johnson, "Hold On To Me" by The Spinners, "Show Me You Can Dance" by The Hit Pack, "Tell Me How To Forget A True Love" by Johnny Bristol, "Mojo Hannah (studio)" by Marvin Gaye, "I Wanted To Cry" by Bruce Channel, "I'm Gonna Make It To The Top" by Freddie Gorman, "This Ole Heart" by The Quails, "The Night We Called It A Day" by The Four Tops, and "Just Your Love" by Ivy Jo. ✨✧ VariousAll Turned On – Motown Instrumentals 1960 to 1972 ... CD
Motown/Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the instrumental strengths of the mighty Motown enterprise – music presented here in an unusual batch of vocal-less tracks from the Motown vaults – 11 of which were never issued at the time, and 5 of which appear here for the first time ever! There's been plenty said about the work of the Funk Brothers behind famous Motown singers over the years – but this set offers up an expanded look at the variations of instrumental modes expressed by the label – some with full charts and arrangements, some with more of a small combo mode, and some with a surprising touch of jazz in the mix! As you might guess from Ace Records, the presentation of the material is fantastic – and there's full session notes and other details that really illuminate the sounds within – in a set of 24 tracks that include "LBJ" and "Chicken Little 69" by Earl Van Dyke & The Soul Brothers, "The Break Down" and "Come See About Me" by Choker Campbell, "True Fine Boy" by The Funk Brothers, "Uptight" by Herman Griffin, "Great Google Mook" by The Mysterions, "Soul Line" and "Double O & A Half" by The Agents, "I'll See You Later" by Johnny Griffith Trio, "Grazing In The Grass" and "Let Me Loose" by Stevie Wonder, "All Turned On" by Bob Wilson & The San Remo Quartet, "Papa Hooper's Barrelhouse Groove" by The Crusaders, "Ich I Bon #1" by Nick & The Jaguars, "Get Ready" by Jonah Jones, "Defunk Brothers" by Frank Morelli, and "Little Mack's Shuffle" by Morocco Muzik Makers. ✨✧ Erykah BaduBut You Caint Use My Phone (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Motown, 2016. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
A really great project from Erykah Badu – a set that's quite spare compared to the fuller sound and energy of her New Amerykah records – done in a bedroom studio in Dallas with producer Zach Witness! The music is lean and stripped-down – hip hop-influenced soul, but almost at a level that has Badu playing with more popular modes of the time – showing that she can do them better than most, but always with this sense of sophistication that draws on all the other sounds she's given us over the years! Badu released the set direct to digital as a mixtape, but it's a fantastic standalone album project on its own – with titles that include "U Use To Call Me", "Cel U Lar Device", "Hi", "Phone Down", "What's Yo Phone Number", "I'll Call U Back", and "Mr Telephone Man". ✨✧ DeBargeAll This Love ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $10.99 12.99
A stone pop soul winner from DeBarge – the kind of record that made the group a heck of a lot of money back in the 80s, and which sounds surprisingly great to our ears today! The record features lots of electro arrangements – fuzzy keyboards and bass pedals grooving around in a way that's got traces of "street" electro, mixed with some super-smooth LA production, and used brilliantly by the group in a family-based pop harmony way that stretches back to some of the great 70s groups of the same style – like The Sylvers or the Stairsteps. A heck of a lot nicer than we remember, and pretty great all the way through – with tracks that include "I Like It", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "All This Love", "I'm In Love With You", "Can't Stop", "It's Getting Stronger", and "Life Begins With You". Raphael SaadiqWay I See It ... LP
Columbia, 2008. Near Mint- ... $69.99 79.99
Raphael Saadiq takes throwback soul and r&b to the next level on The Way I See It – rolling in a groove that recalls 60s Motown, grittier group soul, the sophisticated strings of the 70s scene, and subtle contemporary touches that keep it in the here and now! An awareness of the past and the ability to replicate the sounds would be useless without great songs and vocals – and Raphael brings it in both realms – his voice has never sounded better and there's a catchiness to each of these tunes that betters the best pop soul of the past couple years. If that's not enough, Raphael handles most of the instrumentation himself, too! Niceness from one of the pivotal singers/songwriters/producers of the past couple decades. Titles include "Sure Hope You Mean It", "100 Yard Dash", "Keep Marchin", "Big Easy", "Just One Kiss" featuring a fine background turn by Joss Stone, "Love That Girl", "Calling", "Staying In Love", "Never Give You Up" featuring Stevie Wonder's inimitable harmonica & CJ Hilton on vocals, "Sometimes" and the bonus track "Oh Girl" featuring Jay Z. Undisputed TruthMethod To The Madness/Smokin' ... CD
Warner/Robinsongs (UK), 1976/1979. New Copy 2CDs ... $15.99 24.99
A pair of classic albums from The Undisputed Truth! First up is Method To The Madness – a gem from the second chapter of the group – that time when they stepped away from Motown, and followed producer/creator Norman Whitfield to his own label in California! The shift of record companies also marks a cool shift in styles too – an approach that still has all the bold, bassy elements you'd know from the earlier hits – but one that also has some fuller, more cosmic elements too! The set begins with a weird electronic spoken number that's almost experimental – then brings up the bass for a bit of heavy funk, while also using electric elements in a way that really points the way to sounds that other big funk groups would cop at the start of the 80s – but which really sound fresh here. Titles include "Sunshine", "Take A Vacation From Life (And Visit Your Dreams)", "Life Ain't So Easy", "You + Me = Love", "Cosmic Contact", "Hole In The Wall", and "Let's Go Down To The Disco". Smokin has them still going strong with Whitfield, in a groove that's every bit as wonderful as their early years! There's a killer mix of funk and deeper soul here that few other acts could handle this well – a way of hitting the flashy funk of Sly & The Family Stone or Graham Central Station – but also not falling into any showbiz traps, either – in a mode that really his the group not only respecting the role of each member, but also working together in a very cohesive way on the album. The result is a great little set that balances funky grooves with some excellent cosmic soul cuts – supported by great session work from giants like Wah Wah Watson, Walt Downing, and Jack Ashford. Titles include "Show Time", "Space Machine", "I Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", "Misunderstood", "Sandman", "Atomic Funk", and "Talkin To The Wind". CD

Jr Walker & The All StarsRoad Runner ... LP
SOUL, 1966. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A stone cooker from Jr Walker – the kind of hard-driving soul that made his 60s Motown work a key link between the Detroit sound of the time, and R&B sounds of earlier years! Jr's soulful sax is right up in the mix on most numbers – and the overall sound is nicely freewheeling and almost spontaneous – almost a Motown studio jam at times, with vocals and instruments dancing together in joyous formation! Most tracks are instrumentals, but many also have some sort of vocal chorus – and titles include "Anyway You Wanta", "Pucker Up Buttercup", "Twist Lackawanna", "San Ho Zay", "Money", "Last Call", "Ame Cherie", "Mutiny", and "Road Runner". Outta Sight (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Stirring sounds from the start of the 60s – all pulled from that magical moment when soul was first coming into place – brought together out of different strands of grooves that were rumbling around in the 50s! The set mixes R&B, vocal group, and even a bit of pop – but all with a sound that's plenty soulful throughout – and really uncovers some lesser-known gems in the process! These Outta Sight collections are always great for Northern Soul – and this one shows the roots of the genre – and really illustrates the way that so many 21st Century collectors are turning back to the generation before Motown. Titles include "I Say Hello" by Jimmy Breedlove, "Darling I Know Now" by The Mystics, "Because Of You" by The Dreamers, "Boss Bossa Nova" by Bellino, "Summertime" by Barbara D'Orleans, "Hi Fi Baby" by Teddy McRae, "Humdinger" by Little Marie Allen, "Please Don't Go" by Johnny Acey, "Baby Oh Baby" by The Shells, "Oh What A Fool" by Big Jay McNeeley, and "I Walk On" by Little Tommy & The Elgins. VariousPsychedelic Soul Produced By Norman Whitfield ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $13.99 22.99
Fantastic sounds from one of our all-time favorite producers in soul music – the legendary Norman Whitfield, the man who helped some of Motown's artists pick up a new sort of righteous sound at the end of the 60s, before moving on to start his own Whitfield label in the 70s! If you don't know Norman, you definitely know his work – as he's the cat responsible for adding heavy basslines and fuzzy guitars to Detroit soul – picking up on some of the wider musical changes in the Motor City, and using them to push more message-oriented tracks into the scene! Yet Norman wasn't just a 60s powerhouse – as when the 70s approached, he found a way to expand and refine that sound, keeping it fresh in so many different ways – as you'll hear here in this really well-done collection of his best recordings, supported by very detailed notes as well. Tracks include "I Saw You When You Met Her" by The Undisputed Truth, "Ooh Boy" by Rose Royce, "And All Hell Broke Loose" by Willie Hutch, "I've Been Waitin (single version)" by Spyder Turner, "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye, "Come With Me (single version)" by Rare Earth, "Just One Love" by Stargard, "Wishing On A Star" by Jr Walker, "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Rose Roce, "Love Is What You Make It" by Masterpiece, "Good Lovin" by Mammatapee, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone (single version)" by The Temptations, "War" by Edwin Starr, "It Should Have Been Me" by Yvonne Fair, "Me & Rock & Roll Are Here To Stay" by David Ruffin, and "Psychedelic Shack (single version with intro)" by The Temptations. ✨✧ Rick JamesGarden Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Gordy/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Rick James' classic early run for Motown – a set that maybe didn't chart as big as some of his other records for the label, but which stands strongly today as a well-crafted batch of mellow funky soul! James has a bit less of the bass-heavy riffs here than you'd expect – and instead, the record has kind of a laidback, almost dreamy feel at times – still upbeat, but with the kind of relaxed, glowing vibe you'd be more likely to find from Teena Marie around this point – a really nice contrast with the more familiar hit sounds you'd know from Rick! We actually really like these mellower groovers – which are almost like some of Johnny Watson's Caribbean-tinged grooves – and the production augments the tunes with a bit of sound effects, which really furthers the paradise garden feel of the tunes. Titles include "Mary Go Round", "Summer Love", "Big Time", "Don't Give Up On Love", "Getting It On In The Sunshine", and "Island Lady". CD features a previously unreleased demo of "Gypsy Girl", and a previously unreleased extended version of "Big Time". CD

Gordy, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the all-time great Rick James albums – a return to funkier sounds for Rick that worked both artistically and commercially – and actually got over far better than his more blatant attempts at crossover material on other records! The mix here is perfect – a true summation of all that made Motown great at the time, and the special sort of energy that made Rick one of the freshest mainstream talents at the end of the 70s! The record put a lot of money in Barry Gordy's pockets, and for good reason too – given that the set includes the classic hit "Super Freak" – plus "Give It To Me Baby", "Ghetto Life", "Make Love To Me", "Below The Funk (Pass The J)", and "Fire & Desire" – all done in that compressed pop-funky style that James kind of took from Bootsy Collins and manage to successfully soup up for the masses! ✨✧ MandreMandre ... LP
Motown, 1977. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic set of spacey club from Mandre – aka Andre Lewis – an artist we'd place right up there with some of the best cosmic sounds from Dexter Wansel at the time, and maybe even some of the more space-bound club artists of the European scene as well! The album's got some wonderful keyboards throughout – heard in a mostly instrumental mode on side one, save for a great track that includes vocals from Maxayn – and as the set rolls along, things get more confident, more groove-oriented, and pick up some bassier rhythms that fit in wonderfully with Mandre's overall conception! The album's got a fuzzy, trippy sound you'd hardly expect from late 70s Motown – and the whole thing's been an underground club classic for years – with cuts that include the sublime "Solar Flight (Opus I)" and "Third World Calling (Opus II)", plus "Keep Tryin", "Masked Music Man", "Wonder What I'd Do", "Money", "Dirty Love", and "Masked Marauder". ✨✧ Smokey RobinsonDeep In My Soul ... LP
Tamla, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great bridge between Smokey's seminal Quiet Storm album and the mellower sound of his 80s work – done in a way that still preserves the gentle earthy sound of the former, without any of the too-slick sounds of the latter! The arrangements are relatively lean throughout, and Smokey's vocals really dominate the session – in a way that has them crackling with that falsetto warmth he displayed from the very first, and which helped him continue to be one of the biggest Motown artists into the 80s. Most of the tunes are nice and mellow, but never slick or sleepy – and titles include "Vitamin U", "There Will Come A Day", "It's Been A Long Time", "Let's Do The Dance Of Life Together", "If You Want My Love", "You Cannot Laugh Alone", "In My Corner", and "The Humming Song". Incredible work – a record that should be in every household! Smokey breaks free of the group sound of the Miracles albums – hitting a whole new mode, and inventing the "Quiet Storm" radio format along the way! The title cut – "Quiet Storm" – is a majestic long-building track that's as important to mellow soul as Larry Mizell's work was to jazz funk at the same time, and it's got a similar layering effect that has sounds building and spinning, with a bit of sound effects, great keyboards, and cool moogy touches that recall some of Bobbi Humphrey's best work for Blue Note, but filtered through a mellow ballad style. The whole album's great, and other tracks include "Baby That's Backatcha", "The Agony & The Ecstasy", "Coincidentally", and "Wedding Song". Proof that Motown was still great in the 70s! CD

The last Motown album of the 70s for Willie Hutch – and his last LP for the label before comback to the label in the mid 80s! Willie does indeed have nice little funky soul party going on here– with a steady, but not too laidback groove that bridges the more stripped down funk of earlier records to breezier and slightly more elegant soul sounds of the later 70s. There's some nice guitar, bass and Fender Rhodes moments, and the album's got a nice warm soulful sound throughout. RCA/P&C, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". The classic soundtrack to Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing – lead, of course, by Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" – and beyond that is a pretty wonderful, and not always as intense cross-section of some of the finer urban soul and New Jack Swing, circa '89, breezy vocal-centric R&B, a touch of Latin and Afro-Carribbean pop. The Bed-Stuy melting pot bubbles over to tragic consequences in the film, but the diverse soundtrack is plenty harmonious, and sounds fresh to this day. Pure dark magic from Grover Washington – a record that was a megahit back in the 70s, but which still sounds amazing many decades later! There's a sound here that's completely sublime – and the album is to Grover's career what the first 2 CTI sets by Bob James were to his – a stretched-out, masterpiece of sublime jazzy energy – served up with a really spacious sound overall! Grover's sharp-edged sax is at the lead of the set – but the album's also awash in electric piano work from Bob James – and backings that are as lean, clean, and soulful as the best on CTI from the time. Titles include the killer "Black Frost" – a track that we never tire of – plus the hit "Mister Magic", and the cuts "Earth Tones" and "Passion Flower". CD

✨✧ Stevie WonderMy Cherie Amour ... LP
Tamla, 1969. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Stevie Wonder – one of his real standout albums of the 60s, and a set that's filled with majestic power all the way through! The title track was an instant hit, and the rest of the set follows through nicely with sounds that are way different than common Motown hits – almost an undercurrent of darkness, with a gleaming sense of righteousness coming through in the end – that powerful vibe that Wonder would really unlock in the 70s, but which is already sounding great here! Credit should also be given to producer Henry Crosby, who hits these groovy tones that work perfectly with Wonder's vibe – perfect on the original numbers, and equally great on the album's covers – which come off with a surprisingly great sound. The record includes one of our favorite tracks by him – the great "Angie Girl", which has a wonderful hook, and great production that makes Stevie's voice extra cool – and other titles include "My Cherie Amour", "At Last", "Give Your Love", "I've Got You", "Light My Fire", and "Yester-Me Yester-You Yesterday". ✨✧ Derrick HarriottRiding The Roots Chariot ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorites in the colossal reissue and compilation series put together by Pressure Sounds. Deep soulful roots cuts, all produced by Derrick Harriott, one of the finest producers of Jamaican music, with a feel that is at times reminiscent of some of the best soul cuts coming out of Motown or Curtis Mayfield's productions. Most of the tracks here are DJ cuts, with some of the best, like Big Youth & U Roy chatting over the bubbling rhythms, and a couple of nice harmony tracks featuring the Ethiopians, plus some instrumentals with Augustus Pablo blowing some nice melodica lines. Derrick even takes a vocal turn himself on the massive 12" version of "Slave". Also included are Dennis Brown's "Concentration", an version of "Dock of the Bay" by Big Youth & the Ethiopians "Good Ambition". 16 tracks in all. CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersSoul On The Rocks ... LP
Tamla, 1967. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the few LPs that the Isleys recorded during their short stay at Motown, and a nice batch of mid-60s soul tracks that makes good use of the boys' fantastic voices. The groove's a mix of the harder R&B of earlier years, and some of the smoother sounds of Motown – and the record, while not the group's most important work, does feature some nice little gems that don't always show up in accounts of their music. Titles include "Got To Have You Back", "It's Out Of The Question", "Why When Love Is Gone", "Behind A Painted Smile", "Catching Up On Time", and "Good Things". LP, Vinyl record album

Motown, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
3rd album of futuristic soul from Mandre, with a bit less of the Dexter Wansel influenced sound we love so much about the first album, and more of the bass heavy sound that would predominate in the 80s, as well as a good bit of synthesized sounds and slick production flourishes, even a bit of vocoder. 7 tracks in all: "M3000 (opus VI)", "L'Oasis", "Final Funk", "Spirit Groove", "Freakin's Fine", "Do Whatcha Gotta Do" and "Swang". ✨✧ Rare EarthDreams/Answers (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve/Culture Factory, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The funky blue-eyed debut of Rare Earth – an early Detroit combination of soul, rock, and funk! The group really sprang to fame on Motown right after this early album for Verve – but this set may be even harder and heavier than any of their later records – produced by Dennis Coffey, with a nice blend of fuzz and funk, at a level that's very much like the best Atlantic sounds from Vanilla Fudge – but much more born from the Detroit scene that could give the world The Stooges and Funkadelic at the same time! Many cuts are soul standards, redone with a heavy-drum style that's pretty great – and some of the originals have more of the psych feel, but are graced by some genuinely soulful vocals, often done in harmony style. Titles include "Mothers Oats", "New Rochelle", "Yesterday On Third Avenue", "Red Apple", "Get Ready", "6-3-4-5", and "Sidewalk Cafe". CD

✨✧ Raphael SaadiqWay I See It (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia (UK), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Sure Hope You Mean It", "100 Yard Dash", "Keep Marchin", "Big Easy", "Just One Kiss" featuring a fine background turn by Joss Stone, "Love That Girl", "Calling", "Staying In Love", "Never Give You Up" featuring Stevie Wonder's inimitable harmonica & CJ Hilton on vocals, "Sometimes". and the bonus track "Oh Girl" featuring Jay Z. ✨✧ Undisputed TruthMethod To The Madness ... LP
Whitfield, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A killer classic from the second chapter of the Undisputed Truth – that time when the group stepped away from their Motown home, and followed producer/creator Norman Whitfield to his own label in California! The shift of record companies also marks a cool shift in styles too – an approach that still has all the bold, bassy elements you'd know from the earlier hits – but one that also has some fuller, more cosmic elements too – which are hinted at by the image on the cover! The set begins with a weird electronic spoken number that's almost experimental – then brings up the bass for a bit of heavy funk, while also using electric elements in a way that really points the way to sounds that other big funk groups would cop at the start of the 80s – but which really sound fresh here in the hands of Undisputed Truth. Titles include "Sunshine", "Take A Vacation From Life (And Visit Your Dreams)", "Life Ain't So Easy", "You + Me = Love", "Cosmic Contact", "Hole In The Wall", and "Let's Go Down To The Disco". Jasmine (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Andre Williams is billed as "the godfather of rap" on the cover – but that's hardly what's going on here, as Williams has a sinister style that's all his own – and which is a key bridge between earlier R&B and the sound of funk to come in later years! There's a really unbridled feel to these recordings, most of which were cut on the Motor City scene in the years before Motown – at a level that show the rawer, raunchier sounds that an artist like Andre was working with – often with instrumental styles and lyrical themes that were very far from the stuff of the charts! Titles include "Shoo Doo", "The Greasy Chicken", "My Tears", "Jail Bait", "Mean Jean", "Pulling Time", "Mozelle", "Going Town To Tia Juana", "Please Pass The Biscuits", "Just Because Of A Kiss", "Jail House Bells", "Andre Williams Is Movin", and "I Wanna Know Why". Motown, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal album from Stevie Wonder – one of his first really heady records, and a tremendous little set from start to finish! The Wonder heard here is light years from the simple pop of the early days – really stretching out both as a songwriter and musician – coming up with a richly spiritual sound that's completely amazing. Stevie also produced the record himself – and takes his talents to the next level in the effort – layering sounds together beautifully, and making them come out with a crystal clear realization of his new musical vision. A wonderful place to start digging Stevie Wonder – with the killer classics "Superwoman" and "I Love Every Little Thing About You" – plus "Love Having You Around", "Seems So Long", "Girl Blue", and "Happier Than The Morning Sun". Numero, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the deepest digs into the 60s girl group scene we've ever seen – a package that not only gets way way past the big hits of the time, but also provides much better sound and way more context than the sorts of dodgy CDr collections that have spotted the market for years! It's great to see Numero's magic touch turned onto this sort of world – as the songs here are all super-obscure, and served up from a wealth of rare 7" singles – but come together wonderfully in a beautiful mix of soul and rock, all showing just how many great girl group sounds were recorded back in the day! Many of these numbers are plenty darn catchy – and rival the best coming from Motown or the Brill Building scene – but also have the great distinction of being completely fresh, and backed up with the usual great Numero sense of history in the package – which includes copious notes and loads of great rare images. 2LP set features 28 tracks in all – and includes work by The Contessas, The Shades, Monzaz, Paulette & The Cupids, Toni & the Hearts, Charles Pikes & The Scholars, and lots more acts you've never heard before! The incredible fourth volume in the Northern Soul Story series – tunes spun at the landmark Blackpool Mecca – the influential UK club in the 70s! The Mecca helped to stretch the spun sounds away from the more traditional 60s Motown-style soul, into the more grooving and adventurous sounds of the 70s. The set is full of uptempo late 60s and early 70s soul cuts – with a few hits and hit makers, but the really focus here on obscure works of soul wonder! Put together by Ian Dewhirst with notes on each individual track and a nice introductory reminiscence! 25 tracks in all: "Too Darn Soulful" by Morris Chestnut, "I Can't Hold On" by Lorraine Chandler, "Ever Again" by Bernie Williams, "Stranger In My Arms" by Lynn Randall, "Trying To Find My Woman" by Lou Courtney, "I Need You" by Shane Martin, "I Travel Alone" by Lou Ragland, "Shy Guy" by The Uptights, "Didn't Say A Word" by Patti Austin, "Hold Back The Night" by The Trammps, "Happy Feelin'" by Earth, Wind & Fire, "Aquarian Dream" by Phoenix and more! An absolute treasure trove of rare soul singles from Pied Piper Productions – a mid 60s Detroit soul operation that features Funk Brothers Jack Ashford, Joe Hunter, and Mike Terry – laying down sounds that rival the best Motown groovers of the period! The work is amazing throughout – soul cuts heavily focused on the groove and amazing lead vocals – recorded in ways that are similar to the best of Detroit at the time, but with some rawer aspects too – which makes for a massive package of Northern Soul gems! ✨✧ VariousSacred Soul – Dave Hamilton's Raw Detroit Gospel 1969 to 1974 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The lost gospel music legacy of Detroit producer Dave Hamilton – a key force in funk and soul in the Motor City in the 60s – where he developed an amazing sound that he also brought to his spiritual recordings as well! Dave's approach was always grittier than that of Motown or some of the sweeter labels in the city – as you might have heard on some of the great Ace/Kent collections of his rare singles and unissued recordings over the years – all compilations that really lay the groundwork for this one, which is brimming over with raw gospel material from a very soulful stretch in the genre! The work here is like the hippest soul gospel recorded by Chess/Checker or Jewel/Paula at the same time – strongly associated with secular soul in terms of instrumentation, arrangements, and production – and graced with message-oriented lyrics that are perfect for the heady times of the late 60s and early 70s. Some of the tracks were issued on the Sacred Sounds label back in the day, and are mixed with some others found in Hamilton's archives – all given the usual great support by Ace with a big booklet of notes and photos. Titles include "Grown Old & Feeble" by The Soul Inspirers, "I Still Remember" by Umble Faith, "Someday We'll Be Together" by The National Independent Singers, "Savoir On The Throne" by Mr Bo, "Pressing On" by The Silver Harps, "I'm Not Ready To Die" by The Scott Singers, "Down Here Praying" by The Detroit Silvertones, "The Little Light" by The Fantastic Voices Of Joy, "I Heard A Voice (part 1)" by Sensational Angelettes, "If I Had My Way" by OC Tolbert & Clara White Houston, and "Life's Pathway" by Rev Evans. Socking soul from the legendary Chess Records – presented in a format that always served the label best! Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Upbeat soul with plenty of polish – but never in a way that dampens the groove at all! Instead, these tracks mark a huge new level of sophistication in the soul world of the 60s – sounds from smaller labels who were learning the lessons of Motown – able to fuse together tight rhythms, great singers, and some strong arrangements that really send the whole thing home! In other words, if you dig the sound of 60s Motown, you'll find plenty here to love – even though the music here is much more obscure overall, pulled from smaller labels and even including some never-issued tracks from back in the day. As usual with Kent records, both the song choice and presentation is superb – excellent sound throughout, and notes that really illuminate this lost soul underground. CD features 24 tracks that include "Sunshine Love" by Difosco, "I Wanted To Tell You" by Little Nicky Soul, "Why You Wanna Treat Me The Way You Do" by The Hyperions, "You Won't Say Nothing" by Tamala Lewis, "Love Is Gonna Get You" by Peggy Woods, "I Only Cry Once A Day Now" by The Fidels, "Friday Night" by Johnnie Taylor, "Love Hangover" by Jean Carter, "Naughty Boy" by Jackie Day, "Wait A Minute" by The Kittens, "Sad Tomorrows" by Noony Rickett, "Young Boy Blues" by Daniela Stone, and "Nomad Woman" by Jock Mitchell with the Fabulous Agents.
