Massive Motown from 1971 – the ultra-hip second part of this key year for the monumental label! Motown was going through plenty of changes in 1971 – a year that saw Marvin Gaye's new righteous musical vision, a wave of fresh talent from the west coast, and the label's further push into sounds that went way beyond standard soul music – moves that are summed up beautifully here by artists who include Rare Earth, Popcorn Wylie, Stevie Wonder, Undisputed Truth, The Supremes, PJ, Jackson 5, Bobby Taylor, The Rustix, Jr Walker, Martha Reeves, Virgil Henry, Tom Clay, Diana Ross, Suzee Ikeda, Sunday Funnies, Chuck Jackson, My Friends, Valerie Simpson, Jack Hammer, The Messengers, Lodi, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, and even Bobby Darin! The first Motown full length record by the Spinners – Original Spinners from '67 – followed by an impeccably well-chosen collection of bonus material! It's excellent stuff – an overlooked album with some very hard to find Motown work by this early version of the legendary Spinners – with lead vocals by Bobby Smith and Edgar Edwards. The tracks have a mixture of sweet and raw harmonies – crafted with an elegantly soulful sound that would later take the group way over the top during the 70s, and which here sounds sublime next to some of the group's Motown contemporaries! A really great project from Erykah Badu – a set that's quite spare compared to the fuller sound and energy of her New Amerykah records – done in a bedroom studio in Dallas with producer Zach Witness! The music is lean and stripped-down – hip hop-influenced soul, but almost at a level that has Badu playing with more popular modes of the time – showing that she can do them better than most, but always with this sense of sophistication that draws on all the other sounds she's given us over the years! Raphael Saadiq takes throwback soul and r&b to the next level on The Way I See It – rolling in a groove that recalls 60s Motown, grittier group soul, the sophisticated strings of the 70s scene, and subtle contemporary touches that keep it in the here and now! An awareness of the past and the ability to replicate the sounds would be useless without great songs and vocals – and Raphael brings it in both realms – his voice has never sounded better and there's a catchiness to each of these tunes that betters the best pop soul of the past couple years. A pair of classic albums from The Undisputed Truth! First up is Method To The Madness – a gem from the second chapter of the group – that time when they stepped away from Motown, and followed producer/creator Norman Whitfield to his own label in California! The shift of record companies also marks a cool shift in styles too – an approach that still has all the bold, bassy elements you'd know from the earlier hits – but one that also has some fuller, more cosmic elements too! The set begins with a weird electronic spoken number that's almost experimental – then brings up the bass for a bit of heavy funk, while also using electric elements in a way that really points the way to sounds that other big funk groups would cop at the start of the 80s – but which really sound fresh here. Titles include "Sunshine", "Take A Vacation From Life (And Visit Your Dreams)", "Life Ain't So Easy", "You + Me = Love", "Cosmic Contact", "Hole In The Wall", and "Let's Go Down To The Disco". Smokin has them still going strong with Whitfield, in a groove that's every bit as wonderful as their early years! There's a killer mix of funk and deeper soul here that few other acts could handle this well – a way of hitting the flashy funk of Sly & The Family Stone or Graham Central Station – but also not falling into any showbiz traps, either – in a mode that really his the group not only respecting the role of each member, but also working together in a very cohesive way on the album. The result is a great little set that balances funky grooves with some excellent cosmic soul cuts – supported by great session work from giants like Wah Wah Watson, Walt Downing, and Jack Ashford. A stone cooker from Jr Walker – the kind of hard-driving soul that made his 60s Motown work a key link between the Detroit sound of the time, and R&B sounds of earlier years! Jr's soulful sax is right up in the mix on most numbers – and the overall sound is nicely freewheeling and almost spontaneous – almost a Motown studio jam at times, with vocals and instruments dancing together in joyous formation! An overlooked gem from Rick James' classic early run for Motown – a set that maybe didn't chart as big as some of his other records for the label, but which stands strongly today as a well-crafted batch of mellow funky soul! James has a bit less of the bass-heavy riffs here than you'd expect – and instead, the record has kind of a laidback, almost dreamy feel at times – still upbeat, but with the kind of relaxed, glowing vibe you'd be more likely to find from Teena Marie around this point – a really nice contrast with the more familiar hit sounds you'd know from Rick! We actually really like these mellower groovers – which are almost like some of Johnny Watson's Caribbean-tinged grooves – and the production augments the tunes with a bit of sound effects, which really furthers the paradise garden feel of the tunes. Titles include "Mary Go Round", "Summer Love", "Big Time", "Don't Give Up On Love", "Getting It On In The Sunshine", and "Island Lady". CD features a previously unreleased demo of "Gypsy Girl", and a previously unreleased extended version of "Big Time". CD

One of the all-time great Rick James albums – a return to funkier sounds for Rick that worked both artistically and commercially – and actually got over far better than his more blatant attempts at crossover material on other records! The mix here is perfect – a true summation of all that made Motown great at the time, and the special sort of energy that made Rick one of the freshest mainstream talents at the end of the 70s! The record put a lot of money in Barry Gordy's pockets, and for good reason too – given that the set includes the classic hit "Super Freak" – plus "Give It To Me Baby", "Ghetto Life", "Make Love To Me", "Below The Funk (Pass The J)", and "Fire & Desire" – all done in that compressed pop-funky style that James kind of took from Bootsy Collins and manage to successfully soup up for the masses! A classic set of spacey club from Mandre – aka Andre Lewis – an artist we'd place right up there with some of the best cosmic sounds from Dexter Wansel at the time, and maybe even some of the more space-bound club artists of the European scene as well! The album's got some wonderful keyboards throughout – heard in a mostly instrumental mode on side one, save for a great track that includes vocals from Maxayn – and as the set rolls along, things get more confident, more groove-oriented, and pick up some bassier rhythms that fit in wonderfully with Mandre's overall conception! The album's got a fuzzy, trippy sound you'd hardly expect from late 70s Motown – and the whole thing's been an underground club classic for years – with cuts that include the sublime "Solar Flight (Opus I)" and "Third World Calling (Opus II)", plus "Keep Tryin", "Masked Music Man", "Wonder What I'd Do", "Money", "Dirty Love", and "Masked Marauder". A great bridge between Smokey's seminal Quiet Storm album and the mellower sound of his 80s work – done in a way that still preserves the gentle earthy sound of the former, without any of the too-slick sounds of the latter! The arrangements are relatively lean throughout, and Smokey's vocals really dominate the session – in a way that has them crackling with that falsetto warmth he displayed from the very first, and which helped him continue to be one of the biggest Motown artists into the 80s. Most of the tunes are nice and mellow, but never slick or sleepy – and titles include "Vitamin U", "There Will Come A Day", "It's Been A Long Time", "Let's Do The Dance Of Life Together", "If You Want My Love", "You Cannot Laugh Alone", "In My Corner", and "The Humming Song". Incredible work – a record that should be in every household! Smokey breaks free of the group sound of the Miracles albums – hitting a whole new mode, and inventing the "Quiet Storm" radio format along the way! The title cut – "Quiet Storm" – is a majestic long-building track that's as important to mellow soul as Larry Mizell's work was to jazz funk at the same time, and it's got a similar layering effect that has sounds building and spinning, with a bit of sound effects, great keyboards, and cool moogy touches that recall some of Bobbi Humphrey's best work for Blue Note, but filtered through a mellow ballad style. The whole album's great, and other tracks include "Baby That's Backatcha", "The Agony & The Ecstasy", "Coincidentally", and "Wedding Song". Proof that Motown was still great in the 70s! CD

The last Motown album of the 70s for Willie Hutch – and his last LP for the label before comback to the label in the mid 80s! Willie does indeed have nice little funky soul party going on here– with a steady, but not too laidback groove that bridges the more stripped down funk of earlier records to breezier and slightly more elegant soul sounds of the later 70s. There's some nice guitar, bass and Fender Rhodes moments, and the album's got a nice warm soulful sound throughout. Tracks include "Willie's Boogie", "We Gonna Have A House Party", "Soul Strut", "I Never Had It So Good", "What You Gonna Do After The Party", and "After Love Is Gone" – plus bonus single versions of "We Gonna Have A House Party" and "We Gonna Party Tonight". Sublime sounds from Willie Hutch – a post-Motown album made for Whitfield Records – and a set that's got a wonderfully laidback, mellow funk groove! Gene Page handled the arrangements – and the sound here is more easygoing than some of Willie's funkier work – but in a great way that shows the evolution both of his singing style, and his wicked work on guitar – featured prominently on the cover of the album, and wonderfully throughout the record too! A few things get a bit funky, but they're always balanced by these trippier grooves that we really love – and titles include "Paradise", "Anything Is Possible If You Believe In Love", "And All Hell Broke Loose", "All American Funkathon", "Hip Shakin Sexy Lady", and "Easy Does It".
