✨✧ Binker & Moses (Binker Golding/Moses Boyd)Alive In The East ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2018. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from the team of Binker Golding and Moses Boyd – a pair who just seem to get more and more fantastic with each new album – as they do here, with some heavy-hitting help from Evan Parker on tenor and soprano sax, and Byron Wallen on trumpet! Yet the most compelling addition might be drummer Yussef Days – who works alongside the drums of Moses, to create this really dynamic two-drum sound to the group – one that's really explosive right from the start, especially when the tenor of Golding gets wrapped around the horns of Parker and Wallen! Tori Handsley also plays harp on the record, and can really change up the sound when her approach is strong – on titles that include "Children Of The Ultra Blacks", "How Land Learnt To Be Still", "The Death Of Light", "The Discovery Of Human Flesh", and "How Air Learnt To Move". ✨✧ Moses BoydDark Matter ... LP
Exodus (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". Greg FoatSymphonie Pacifique ... CD
Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
One of the most ambitious albums to date from the mighty Greg Foat – a set that's different than some of his more intimate affairs, in that it features key contributions from British jazz giants both young and old – all working with Greg's piano, Fender Rhodes, and vibes in a style that's deeply spiritual, and filled with power! The album's hardly the pacific affair you might guess from the title – nothing too placid, as the energy really builds between members of a lineup that includes Moses Boyd and Clark Tracey on drums, Heather Wrighton on harp, Art Themen on tenor and soprano, Eric Young on percussion, and Warren Hampshire on guitars – all at a level that makes the record the deepest jazz album that Foat has ever given us! Titles include "Pointe Venus", "Mother's Love", "After The Storm", "Island Life", "Man Vs Machine", "Nikinakinu", "Anticipation", and "Symphonie Pacifique". CD

Nubya GarciaSource/We Move ... LP
Concord, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
A really tremendous take on the Source album from saxophonist Nubya Garcia – one that has new versions of the tunes served up by some of his hippest contemporaries – at a level that brings together his current work on the London scene with a global underground that has found a way to embrace a whole new generation in jazz! There's plenty of touches here that maybe echo the London at the start of this century – when the 4Hero generation were first beginning to mix jazz instrumentation and more cosmic levels of production – but the songs also feature some key American underground elements too, which makes for a wonderful sense of variety throughout the set – but not in the jagged style that usually comes with a remix album. Players include Joe Armon Jones on piano and keyboards, Sam Jones on drums, and Nubia on tenor sax – and the record features vocal appearances from Akenya, La Perla, and Sheila Maurice-Grey. Titles include "Together Is A Beautiful Place To Be (Nala Sinephro rmx)", "La Cumba Me Esta Llamando (Kaidi Tatham rmx)", "Boundless Beings (Georgia Anne Muldrow rmx)", "Source (Dengue Dengue Dengue rmx)", "Stand With Each Other (Keiyaa rmx)", "Inner Game (Black Spade rmx)", "The Message Continues (DJ Harrison rmx)", and "Pace (Moses Boyd rmx)". ✨✧ Greg FoatMage ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), 2019. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the most amazing work we've heard so far from Greg Foat – and that's really saying a lot, as the British keyboardist has given us some really incredible records over the years! The work's got a more ambitious vibe than some of Greg's straighter jazz sets – with large arrangements that also bring in voices at times – used in a really haunting way that's part late 60s Chess/Cadet Records, part acid folk – even though the instrumentation is mostly jazz overall! The core group also features this great mix of older British jazz giants and contemporary musicians – the legendary Ray Russell on guitar, with Duncan Lamont on tenor, Art Themen on soprano and tenor, Nat Steele on vibes, Warren Hampshire (of Hampshire & Foat) on guitar and percussion, and Moses Boyd, Clark Tracey, and Malcolm Catto on drums! Lamont is especially great – with these old school tenor solos that bring a strong current of soul to the more complex arrangements – and Foat himself plays piano, keyboards, and harmonium. Titles include versions of Tim Buckley's "Driftin" and Piero Piccioni's "Endless Love" – plus originals "The Mage", "The High Priestess", "Incantation", and "The Magic Radish". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousWe Out Here ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
London is exploding again with fantastic music – and this time around, it's the city's jazz underground that comes forward to remind us what a unique musical crossroads the city can be! The work here represents an incredible new scene that's pushing boundaries all over again – not the avant jazz of London improvisers, nor the electric sounds of the broken beat world, or retro funk of another scene – but fantastic acoustic jazz that at one level brings back deeper spiritual sounds from generations back, but at another flings forward its sounds with inspiration that will be setting the standard for years to come. We've only had a few of these artists on record before, and together they work beautifully as a strong new proclamation of talent – on titles that include "Once" by Nubya Garcia, "Inside The Acorn" by Maisha, "Pure Shade" by Ezra Collective, "The Balance" by Moses Boyd, "Brockley" by Theon Cross, "Walls" by Triforce, "Black Skin Black Masks" by Shabaka Hutchings, "Go See" by Joe Armon Jones, and "Abusey Junction" by Kokoroko. ✨✧ Tori HandsleyAs We Stand ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tori Handsley may not look like your usual jazz musician on the front cover – but she's part of the contemporary London scene, and really breaks out here alongside some killer drums from the great Moses Boyd! Handley plays both piano and electric harp with lots of cool effects – and the trio also features this round, rolling basswork from Ruth Goller – a player who's a perfect counterpart for Boyd's nonstop sense of energy! This is the first we've ever heard of Tori – and she's wonderful on piano, playing with this bold sense of flow that should get her plenty of attention in years to come – and her use of the electric harp is equally great, and never gimmicky at all – a very cool instrument that's often processed in ways that really bring out the richness of its sound. Sahra Gure sings on three of the album's tracks, but the main vibe is instrumental – and titles include "Polar Retreat", "Rivers Of Mind", "Home", "Settling Into The Sun", "Kestrel", "As We Stand", "Out Of Sight Out Of Mind", and "Convolution".
