Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandMosaic Select (Kogun/Long Yellow Road/Tales Of A Courtesan/Insights/March Of The Tadpoles) (3CD set) ... CD
RCA/Mosaic, 1974/1975/1976/1977. Used 3CD ... $59.99
Seminal work from one of the hippest big bands of the 70s – the legendary ensemble led by pianist Toshiko Akioshi and reedman Lew Tabackin! The group marks a huge shift for Akiyoshi – a move away from the more bop-inflected small combo work of earlier years, into a rich new role as a composer and arranger – one who comes up with fantastic charts for the ensemble, filled with color, tone, and a great sense of swing! Tabackin's reeds are great too – always handled with bold lines, and a strongly visionary sound – and other players on the dates include Bill Perkins and Gary Foster on saxes, Bobby Shew and Ron Raider on trumpets, Britt Woodman and Charlie Loper on trombones, Don Baldwin on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. The 3CD set features 5 albums in all – Kogun, Long Yellow Road, Tales Of A Courtesan, Insights, and March Of The Tadpoles – and titles include "Elegy", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Opus Number Zero", "Since Perry/Yet Another Tear", "Strive For Jive", "Village", "Studio J", "Mobile", "Deracinated Flower", and "Notorious Tourist From The East". Curtis AmyCurtis Amy – Mosaic Select (Blues Message/Meetin Here/Groovin Blue/Way Down/Tippin On Through/Katanga!) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Early 60s. Used 3CD ... $64.99
An amazing transformation in jazz – the first 6 albums by Texas tenor giant Curtis Amy, packaged together in one box set! Amy had a deep gutsy sound that was similar to other Texas tenors coming out of the state during the postwar years – and initially, his first recordings in LA were done in a spirited soul jazz mode – often teaming with organist Paul Bryant, in loose and free albums that had the feel of some of the east coast sides cut for Prestige at the time. As the early 60s wore on, though, Amy really opened up – and started working with some of the hipper younger players of the LA scene, to shift his groove from straight soul jazz into more of a modally-inspired sound. The 6 albums on this set document this incredible transformation – already tremendous at the start, but even more revolutionary as Amy moved onto work with players that included Carmell Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Frank Strazzeri, Jimmy Bond, Jack Wilson, and Roy Ayers. Amy's never gotten his due on the reissue market before, and although one of these albums has seen the light of day on CD, most of the other material is showing up here for the first time on reissue – making the limited numbered set even more important than most of the other Mosaic sets! Tremendous work all the way through – and a release that's bound to finally get Amy the attention he deserves. 36 tracks in all – with a great set of notes! CD
(Out of print, limited to 5,000 numbered copies – in great shape!)

Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $44.99
Some of the best work ever recorded by bassist Paul Chambers – one of the greatest bass players in jazz! This excellent 3CD box set features the bulk of albums that Paul Chambers recorded for Blue Note as a leader, plus an earlier gem recorded for the Imperial label, and another session for the Transition label. Together, the records give an incredible picture of Chambers' work – showing why most jazz players of the 50s regarded him as one of the most important forces on his instrument, and why Chambers had some unique talents that made him one of the few bassists to regularly record albums as a leader. Players on the albums include John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Clifford Jordan, Pepper Adams, and Curtis Fuller – and the albums include Chamber's Music, Whims Of Chambers, Paul Chambers Quintet, Bass On Top, and Transition Session. 32 tracks in all! Capitol/Roulette/Mosaic, 1955/1957/1958/1964/1966. Used 3 CDs ... $64.99
More than a decade's worth of genius from arranger Johnny Richards – the long-overdue release of his seminal albums for Capitol, Roulette, and Legende Records from the 50s and 60s! Richards first came to fame working for Stan Kenton in the early 50s – and although is work is featured on some of Kenton's best-remembered albums, Richards also had a lot more tricks up his sleeve than he ever used with Stan – a good many of which are featured in this package! The albums run through modes that include modern big band arrangements, sparer tone poems in sound, hard-driving Latin tracks, and some especially nice high-concept pieces that still always manage to swing with the trademark Johnny Richards groove that was a real standout in the high modern years of the Kenton group. Package features a whopping 6 albums on 3 CDs – Annotations Of The Muses, Wide Range, Experiments In Sound, Rites Of Diablo, My Fair Lady My Way, and Aqui Se Habla Espanol – a total of 50 tracks in all, presented with the original liner notes and full session details! Freddie SlackFreddie Slack – Mosaic Select (3CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1940s. Used 3 CDs ... $69.99
Seminal sides from pianist Freddie Slack – a player who first came to fame during the boogie woogie era of the 30s, but later went onto have a huge impact on both swing and R&B! The 3CD collection brings together 73 tracks from Slack's 40s recordings for Capitol Records – tracks that featuring his piano mostly leading his own orchestra, with occasional vocals by Ella Mae Morse, Johnny Mercer, and even T-Bone Walker! The range of modes here is way more than just boogie piano – and rhythms slide from gently jazzy to jazzily jumping as the set moves on – showing Slack's increasing interest with styles that would be picked up and transformed even more strongly by R&B artists of the late 40s. All titles were originally issued on 78rpm singles, but are remastered beautifully here – and the package is a long-overdue look at Freddie's important work of the 40s! CD

✨✧ Art BlakeyMosaic ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD

Pacific Jazz/Mosaic, 1950s/Early 60s. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wealth of piano trio material from the west coast scene of the 50s and early 60s – tracks pulled not only from long-lost albums by pianists Russ Freeman, Richard Twardzik, Jimmy Rowles, and Clare Fischer – but also even more obscure recordings that only appeared on Pacific Jazz collections! The scope of the package is really tremendous – as it begins with some of the first Pacific Jazz trio sides by Russ Freeman and Richard Twardzik – both done during their years with Chet Baker – then runs through Jimmy Rowles' full album Rare But Well (recorded for Liberty in 1954), a variety of shorter trio sessions by Freeman and Rowles, and Clare Fischer's early trio sides – First Time Out (1962) and Surging Ahead (1963). And as always with Mosaic, the whole thing's incredibly well done – put together with tremendous care in both the mastering and notes, so that the whole thing's not just some happy accident in jazz. 51 tracks, 3CDs, and beautiful throughout! The set mixes a few sex-oriented tracks by more famous artists, with others that clearly come from obscure European sources – and which really make great use of the sexual revolution sound of funk to make things happen! Sly basslines sneak beneath sweet keyboards, caressing funky drums, and setting the stage for some great whispered vocals and sexy singing! Titles include "Persuasion" by The Climax, "Mondo Porno" by The Blow Jobbers, "Lovers In Orbit" by Paramours, "Sexy Safari" by Afro Rhythm Group, "Orgiastic Ritual" by South African Combo, "Stories" by Chakachas, "Erotica" by Man, "Love" by Rita, "No One Can Love" by Bill Cosby, and "What Do You Want Now Darling" by Johannes Fehring & The Chicks. Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from the most productive years of the amazing Duke Pearson – pianist, arranger, and a key force in the Blue Note sound of the late 60s! Duke first emerged as a funky pianist with a sound that was in the mode of Bobby Timmons and Les McCann, but which also had a slightly more lyrical influence. He cut some fine straight jazz sides earlier in the 60s, but during the last few years of his life, he really let loose at Blue Note – exploring modal grooves, Brazilian rhythms, vocal soul jazz, and a host of other styles that criss-crossed through the work of his last few sessions. This great little set does a fantastic job of bringing this late Duke to life – by compiling some of his best albums ever, the sessions that made up the records The Phanton, I Don't Care Who Knows It, It Could Only Happen With You, How Insensitive, and Merry Ole Soul. Along with the usual Blue Note touches, these sides are awash with loads of interesting elements – including vocals by Flora Purim, vibes by Bobby Hutcherson, percussion by Airto, tenor by Frank Foster, reeds by Hermeto Pascoal, and even some electric piano from Duke himself! The albums together comprise an amazing slice of music – not just for Duke, but for Blue Note itself – and packaged together like this, the whole thing's a heck of a great bargain! 45 tracks on 3CDs, with great notes, in a limited numbered box! Paul DesmondComplete 1975 Toronto Recordings (7CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1975. New Copy 7CD ... $118.99 119.00
A huge amount of 70s material from the legendary Paul Desmond – all recorded during the year of 1975, with backing from a shifting group of Canadian players – and most of it unissued until now! You'll know some of these tracks from the albums Paul Desmond Quartet Live (A&M), Paul Desmond (Artist House), and Like Someone In Love (Telarc) – but together, the tracks present a much bigger picture of Desmond's genius at the time – really moving past some of the more rigid roles he'd have in his 60s work with Dave Brubeck. Players on most numbers are the trio of Ed Bickert on guitar, Don Thompson on bass, and Jerry Fuller on drums – a really great combo, and the mix of guitar with Desmond's sharply-blown alto is wonderful – a perfect upfront setting for his sound. A few more tracks feature trombonist Rob McDConnell in place of Bickert – which makes for a different, but equally compelling sound – and the whole thing features 51 long tracks, 32 of which appear here for the first time ever – all with the usual great Mosaic Records booklet of notes and presentation. Monumental work from these two key figures in pre-bop jazz – both musicians with a strong early tie to trad styles, but also artists who opened up to a fair bit of fresh ideas in the 40s as well! The box is the most comprehensive package we've certainly seen of Eddie Condon at this point in his career – with every Commodore and Decca recording, including many alternate takes, never-issued numbers, and other gems that really flesh out these years of his vital contribution to the growth of jazz guitar. Recordings feature Condon alongside players that include Max Kaminsky on trumpet, Wild Bill Davison on cornet, Jack Teagarden on trombone, Pee Wee Russell on clarinet, and Bud Freeman on tenor – plus a few that have Bing Crosby on vocals. And Freeman is featured on some excellent recordings of equally wide scope – less tracks overall than Condon, but lots of rarities and alternates from the Commodore years – including some excellent small group material. The box features a whopping 199 tracks in all – with the usual very thorough Mosaic level of notes and presentation – and most material was originally issued on 78s, save for the number of rare tracks that were unreleased back in the day. Mosaic, Late 30s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the most unique packages we've ever seen from the mighty Mosaic Records – not a set that focuses on a specific artist or record label – but instead a treasure trove of freshly-unearthed material from the archives of Bill Savory – a legendary sound engineer whose work for Columbia Records helped transform our understanding of classic jazz! The sides here aren't Bill's work for that label – but instead feature recordings he made of rare broadcast performances – material that's surprisingly well-recorded, given Savory's skills with the technology of the times – which means that these tracks are way more than the kind of fuzzy radio tapes that used to show up on older jazz bootleg albums. Mosaic did a great job of restoring these materials, and presenting them with wonderful clarity – in a succession of late 30s performances that feature rare work by Count Basie, Albert Ammons, Mildred Bailey, Teddy Wilson, Glenn Miller, John Kirby, Carl Cress, Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Jack Teagarden, and other giants of the swing generation. There's 108 tracks in all – including a few surprisingly long performances – and the whole thing comes with the usual hefty Mosaic Records package of notes and photos! CD

Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $24.99
Wonderful! This is the fourth session that tenorist Tina Brooks cut for Blue Note – and it's finally getting reissued! The material did appear briefly in the Tina Brooks box set on Mosaic, but it went out of print immediately, and has never before been presented with a proper cover. It's been appropriately titled Waiting Game, because of the four albums that Brooks recorded for Blue Note, only one (True Blue) was ever issued during his life. The release of this 4th album is a joyous occasion – not only because Brooks is in excellent form on tenor, playing with a warm soulful sound that certainly deserved more credit – but also because the session features a great cast like Johnny Coles, Wilbur Ware, Kenny Drew, and Philly Joe Jones. Tracks include "David The King", "Dhyana", "Talkin About", and "The Waiting Game". CD

✨✧ John RenbournUnpentangled – The Sixties Albums (There You Go/John Renbourn/Bert & John/Another Monday/Watch The Stars/Sir John A Lot Of/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of greatness from British folk rock legend John Renbourn – all of his late 60s solo work, done before moving on to greater fame in Pentangle! First up is There You Go – a rare one from singer Dorris Henderson and future Pentangle founder John Rensbourn! Florida born, LA raised singer Dorris Henderson moved to London in 1965 and was soon singing London's folk clubs, where she met Rensbourn. A solid mix of traditionals and then contemporary folk songs – stripped down and honest takes on "Saly Free And Easy", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Mr Tamborine Man", "Going To Memphis", Something Lonesome", "Mist On The Mountain" and more. This edition includes bonus tracks from a rare 45 – "Hangman" and "Leaves That Are Green". Next is the self-titled John Renbourn from 1965 – a set that would not only establish John's legacy for years to come, but also have a very strong impact upon the role of the guitar on the British scene too! The album's definitely in a mode that owes something to an American folk legacy – but it also really breaks from the past with unusual phrasings and colorings in Renbourn's guitar – certainly with an ear towards ancient English modes, but also at once very fresh and contemporary – a strong precursor to the waves of new acoustic talents that would flow from the UK a few years later, but maybe even more revolutionary – given that John's mostly just working here with his guitar and voice. Bert Jansch adds guitar to a few tracks – and titles include "Song", "Down On The Barge", "Plainsong", "Judy", "Beth's Blues", "Blue Bones", "Train Tune", "Winter Is Gone", and "Noah & Rabbit". Bert & John is a hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Another Monday is maybe the most obscure album in the collection – a set that is mostly instrumental, with some completely fantastic work by Renbourn on guitar – but which also features a bit of guest vocals from singer Jacqui McShee – whose warmer presence next to John really makes for a nice pairing. The album's as powerful as it is subtle, really beautiful in its sense of variety – with titles that include "Buffalo", "One For William", "Lost Lover Blues", "Another Monday", "Day At The Seaside", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", and "Waltz". Watch The Stars is another great collaboration with Dorris Henderson – an American singer, but one who moved to London in the 60s – where she cut this rare gem with guitarist John Renbourn! The album's got a righteous vibe that's hipper than the usual folk set – with some traditional tunes and some contemporary material – recorded with that amazing phrasing that made Renbourn's guitar so distinct right from the start, with lots of those jazzy currents we love so much – and which really fit the creative vocal approach of Henderson! Dorris also plays some autoharp, and there's a bit of bass in the backings – although overall the main focus here is on Renbourn's guitar and Henderson's vocals. Titles include "Come Up Horsey", "God Bless The Child", "Watch The Stars", "30 Days In Jail", "Mosaic Patterns", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", and "There's Anger In This Land". Sir John A Lot Of is perhaps one of the best-known albums from British guitar legend John Renbourn – as it was issued widely in the US, and kept in print for a surprisingly long time over the years! The approach here is slightly different than Renbourn's previous records – a bit in the image presented by the cover, although with maybe not as slavish a sound – as John just uses the whole thing to go a bit more ancient than before, in ways that echo the time travel that the whole British folk scene was taking as the 70s approached. The tunes are done in ways that are really beautiful – still lots of the incredible guitar work that made Renbourn such a standout on the scene – plus flute from jazzman Ray Warleigh, who's very different here than usual – and spare use of finger cymbals, African drums, and glockenspiel by Terry Cox. Titles include "Morgana", "Transfusion", "The Trees They Do Grow High", "Sweet Potato", "Seven Up", and "White Fishes". 6CD box features all records in original artwork sleeves, with a booklet of notes – and bonus tracks that include "Message To Pretty", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Lucky Thirteen", "Blues Run The Game", "The Wildest Pig In Captivity (alt)", "Can't Keep From Crying", "Transfusion (alt)", and "The Leaves Are Green". Fontana/Philips/BGO (UK), 1969/1970/1971. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99
3 incredible albums from the British jazz scene at the end of the 60s – all together in one 2CD package! Down Another Road is incredible work from one of England's greatest jazz talents – bassist Graham Collier, a player with an amazing ability to absorb a lot of the modern and progressive influences of his jazz generation – but all without succumbing to the same indulgences as them – a fact which resulted in a razor-sharp style that forged some of the freshest jazz ever to come out of the UK. This 1969 album is a masterpiece – filled with a modal groove and a strident searching theme, yet also as tight and grooving as most of the best Blue Note sessions from the same time. Harry Beckett's on trumpet, Nick Evans is on trombone, John Marshall plays drums, and Stan Sulzmann handles the reeds. Tracks include "Down Another Road", "Danish Blue", "The Barley Mow", and "Aberdeen Angus". Songs For My Father is a masterpiece of modernist soul jazz, with a sound that recalls the best late Blue Note work by Lee Morgan or Hank Mobley. Alan Wakeman's tenor is perfectly pitched, and searingly searching; Harry Beckett's trumpet is round, lyrical, and filled with soul; and the piano of John Taylor comps along in chunky modal grooves that make the whole album fall together brilliantly. Tracks include "Song One", "Song Two", "Song Three", etc – and they're all fantastic! Mosaics is a wonderfully searching session – filled with warm McCoy Tyner-esque modal moments, and searing post-Coltrane solos! The album comprises one long piece – Collier's "Mosaics" – performed live by a group that includes Alan Wakeman on tenor and soprano, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and Geoff Castle on piano. "Mosaics" has that amazing mid 60s Coltrane quality of going out in a spiritual kind of way – yet always returning to the groove, never getting too free, and always remaining firmly focused on the direction ahead. All players are great, and the record crackles with the intensity of a classic session on Impulse! CD
