✨✧ George BensonGood King Bad ... CD
CTI/Mosaic, 1975. Used ... $9.99
Sweet 70s funk from George Benson – an album that's a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still free from the commercial polish of his later hits! Maestro David Matthews is at the helm for this session – and most numbers have a full backing from players who include some of the best of the CTI/Kudi generation – including Ronnie Foster and Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Joe Farrell on flute, Fred Wesley on trombone, Eric Gale on rhythm guitar, Dave Friedman on vibes, and Steve Gadd on drums – who manages to kick in a nicely funky undercurrent, even on some of the mellower numbers. George's guitar is filled with warmly chromatic hues – gliding away nicely on titles that include the slow funky "Em", plus "Siberian Workout", "Shell Of A Man", "Hold On I'm Coming", "One Rock Don't Make No Boulder", and "Theme From Good King Bad". CD

Earl KlughWishful Thinking ... CD
Capitol/Mosaic, 1984. Used ... $6.99
Smooth fusion from one of the greats – and although an 80s set, a record that still holds onto most of the best warmth of Earl Klugh's earlier years! The production is surprisingly laidback at points – never too many 80s gimmicks or easy attempts at a hit – and Earl plays with arrangements from Dave Matthews, Don Sebesky, and Johnny Mandel – all top-shelf talents who know best how to keep the sound in line. All tracks are Klugh originals – and tunes include "Tropical Legs", "Wishful Thinking", "A Natural Thing", "All The Time", and "The Only One For Me". CD

✨✧ Count Basie & Lester YoungClassic 1936 to 1947 Count Basie & Lester Young Studio Sessions (8CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Late 30s/1940s. Used 8CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible document of one of the greatest pairings in jazz – the groundbreaking tenor sax of Lester Young, and the legendary orchestra of Count Basie! The Young/Basie pairing is the stuff of history books, and has certainly been showcased on other releases – but never in this much detail, or with this much attention to both the sound and discographical information – as the 8CD package pulls together tracks from labels that include Decca, Aladdin, Brunswick, Commodore, Emarcy, Keynote, Mercury, Victor, Vocalion, and a few other imprints – spanning over a decade of recording, with a total of 173 tracks in all! Young's horn is amazing – birthed in swing, but given a sense of soul that would shape countless generations to come – a huge influence on young boppers of the Stan Getz generation, but also a real guide to some of the soul jazz musicians of the 60s, and new traditionalists of later generations too. Some sides here are small groups, many more large ensembles with Basie as the leader – plus a few cuts with Benny Goodman, the Kansas City Six, Teddy Wilson, Sam Price, and Dicky Wells – all numbers that might just feature Young but not Basie. There's even a few with singer Una Mae Carlisle, and a few other tracks feature vocals – although the bulk of the work is instrumental. Wonderful throughout – and a great example of how great the Mosaic presentation can be for music of the 78rpm generation! CD
(Box has a few light marks in one bottom corner, but is great overall, and the book is very nice.)

One of the first real moments of genius from the young Stan Getz – his collaboration with guitarist Jimmy Raney, whose sharp tone matched the rasp of Stan's tenor beautifully! (Out of print. Box has some very light wear, and the trace of an old price sticker – but overall, this is a very nice set.)

✨✧ Benny Morton & Jimmy HamiltonBenny Morton & Jimmy Hamilton Blue Note Swingtets ... LP
Blue Note/Mosaic, 1945. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early, early Blue Note sides, from the dawn of the label, a transitional period in jazz. These sessions, led by Benny Morton and Jimmy Hamilton are truly hard-to-get in their original format, not to mention in any pressing, and these recordings reflect a side of the Blue Note catalog that's rarely considered any more. These swingtet sides feature the cream of the crop of the big band era, performing in smaller tighter groups that let them move around New York's urban jazz scene more easily. Some of the finest soloists of the era are caught here in a unique setting, including Barney Bigard, Ben Webster, Ray Nance and Harry Carney. As you'd expect from the performance standards of the day, the performance are short, tight and sweet, and include "MY Old Flame, "Conversing In Blue", two takes of "The Sheik Of Araby" and "Limehouse Blues" by Benny Morton's All Stars, "Cherry", "Rosetta", "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" and "Wiliphant Winnie" by the Sammy Benskin Trio and "Old Uncle Bud", "Blues For Clarinets", "Slapstick" and "Blues In My Music Room" by Jimmy Hamilton & The Duke's Men. ✨✧ VariousComplete Dial Records Modern Jazz Sessions (9CD set) ... CD
Dial/Mosaic, Late 40s. Used 9CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from one of the most important labels of the early bebop years – a tiny imprint based in LA, but one that played a big role on the New York scene as well! Dial Records is often best-remembered for documenting some key early material by Charlie Parker – but as you'll see in this set, the company had a wonderful ear for other artists too – and managed to record some incredible work during a relatively short span of time! The tracks here were all done in a span of less than four years – from mid 1945 through late 1948 – yet together, they represent a blueprint of bop that would last for years to come – material that has often come out in varied formats over the years, and finally gets its full, proper presentation here – in an overstuffed box that's in the best Mosaic Records tradition! The collection features individual sessions, laid out in chronological order – with full notes on each, and a presentation that tracks down obscure tracks from varied releases, then brings them together to represent the full creative output at each moment. The 9CD package features 185 tracks in all – on sessions led by Red Norvo, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Howard McGhee, Sonny Berman & Bill Harris, Dexter Gordon, Erroll Garner, Earl Coleman and Fats Navarro, Dodo Marmarosa, and the team of Wardell Grey and Dexter Gordon. Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A stunning overview of these two key slices of work from Louis Armstrong – material recorded for RCA Records in the mid 40s, and then his huge Columbia Records comeback sides in the 50s – the latter of which is presented here with a huge amount of unissued material and alternate tracks! The RCA work starts out the set – 78rpm material that includes both larger groups and small combos – including his All Stars and Hot Seven groups, as well as a 1946 Esquire Award Winners session. Columbia material begins in 1954 – and returns to some key all-star groups with some of Louie's best sidemen of the decade – on sessions supervised by George Avakian and Teo Macero, each of whom bring out a different quality in Armstrong's talents. In addition to all the 78rpm singles and unissued tracks, the sessions also feature material that appeared on the records Louis Armstrong Plays WC Handy, Satch Plays Fats, The Real Ambassadors, Louis Armstrong Plays The Blues, and the unusual Book Of The Month Club album set of Rare & Unreleased performances. ✨✧ Coleman HawkinsClassic Coleman Hawkins Sessions 1922 to 1947 (8CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1920s/1930s/1940s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing set throughout – not just for the musical growth of Coleman Hawkins, but also for the development of the tenor sax in jazz, too! These sides could very well be said to be THE seminal recordings for tenor – the records that helped transform the instrument from a bit of a trick noisemaker into one of the most dominant voices in jazz during the 20th century – the beginning of a rich legacy that went onto encompass Lester Young, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, and so many others! The package captures Coleman Hawkins right at the start of his career – with vital early 78rpm recordings that move from trad to swing to some of the modern combo sounds that Hawkins would blow in the postwar years. And the range of settings is amazing, too – not a loose collection or mish-mash of material, but a really thoughtful progression that has Hawkins working with Mamie Smith, Fletcher Henderson, Clarence Williams, The Chocolate Dandies, and McKinney's Cotton Pickers in the early years – then moving up to work as a leader on his own – as well as material with Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, and Count Basie. Most of the later material is for small labels – like Baronet, Cont, Meritt, Neatwork, and others – and the early sides are for Okeh, Columbia, Vocalion, Brunswick, and other smaller imprints. Features 190 tracks in all, and very copious notes, too – an amazing package from Mosaic! CD

The start of a legend – a huge amount of material that introduced the world to the tenor genius of the young Joe Henderson – recorded over the space of a few short years, on records that feature Joe as both the leader and a sideman on some of the hippest Blue Note records of the time! Henderson was amazing right at the start – able to play a soulful hardbop lead at one moment, then slide into edgier modern territory the next – a quality that made him a key artist to work with some of the other strong Blue Note innovators of the period – as you'll hear in this overstuffed set! The set features a total of 47 gems – including some alternate takes – all wrapped up with the usual top-shelf Mosaic Records booklet of notes, photos, and other key details on the material. ✨✧ Clifford Jordan & OthersComplete Strata East Sessions (In The World/Izipho Zam/Rhythm X/Glass Bead Games/Zodiac/Super Bass) (6CD set) ... CD
Strata East/Mosaic, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 6CDs ... Out Of Stock
A really amazing set of work from tenorist Clifford Jordan – a player who first rose to fame in the hardbop scene of the late 50s, but who moved into tremendous new territory with these Strata East recordings of the late 60s and early 70s! Jordan was a Chicago contemporary of players like Johnny Griffin and Von Freeman, but he was never content to rest on his laurels – and stretched out on these records with a spiritual vibe that he'd never expressed before – and which would go onto inspire countless other musicians in years to come! This set brings together all the Dolphy Series recordings that Jordan recorded – either as an artist or producer – two of which were never issued on record at the time. Jordan's own albums for the label are wonderful enough – the double-length Glass Bead Games, one of our favorite records ever – and the killer In The World, which is great too. But this set also adds in other Strata East albums that really help illustrate the scene in which Jordan was working – including the excellent Pharoah Sanders non-Impulse session, Izipho Zam; the modern music of Charles Brackeen on Rhythm X, with Don Cherry on trumpet and Brackeen on tenor; and the great Cecil Payne album Zodiac, which has some of the last trumpet work ever from Kenny Dorham. Plus, the set also features two extremely rare albums – the never-issued Shades Of Edward Blackwell – led by the drummer, with Don Cherry on trumpet and Luqman Lateef on tenor, plus a bit of log drum from Jordan – and the obscure Super Bass album from Wilbur Ware, which features Jordan on tenor, in a quartet with Ware on bass, Don Cherry on trumpet, and Ed Blackwell on drums! These two albums are worth the price of the package alone – even if you have other Strata East albums in your collection – and the whole thing features the usual sublime Mosaic package and booklet. ✨✧ Helen MerrillHelen Merrill/Dick Katz Sessions (Feeling Is Mutual/Shade Of Difference) ... CD
EmArcy/Mosaic, 1965/1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two rare slices of work from Helen Merrill – overlooked 60s sessions recorded with pianist/arranger Dick Katz! First up is the album The Feeling Is Mutual – wonderfully moody session from Merrill – and an obscure one too! The album was recorded in New York in 1965 – with pianist Katz leading an off-beat group that featured Thad Jones on cornet, Jim Hall on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – a combo that has equal talents for modern moments and more sensitive moods. The groove is much more fragmented than on some of Helen's earlier records for Mercury – with a jagged edge that works perfectly with her strangely detached style of presenting a lyric – a way of looking at familiar tunes almost from the outside, in ways that really come up with something new. Titles include "Baltimore Oriole", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Day Dream", "The Winter Of My Discontent", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Deep In A Dream". Shade Of Difference is almost even more amazing – recorded in 1968 with a unique group of players that includes Gary Bartz on alto, Elvin Jones on drums, Thad Jones on cornet, Hubert Laws on flute, and Jim Hall on guitar. The approach is incredible – strangely off-key at many times, with a sad approach that shows Helen as a far greater singer than she ever was in the 50s. The session's laid under-discovered for years – quite possibly because of its overly-dark quality – but it's actually one of the greatest records that Merrill ever cut, one that pushes her up to, and almost past, the level of June Christy and Chris Connor. Titles include "Where Do You Go", "Lonely Woman", "While We're Young", "A Lady Must Live", "I Want A Little Boy", and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most". CD

Blue Note, 1969. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Astounding work from pianist Andrew Hill – a rare session that was recorded for Blue Note in 1969, and issued here for the first time! The work has an extremely ambitious approach – with Hill leading a 9 piece group that includes Woody Shaw, Dizzy Reece, Julian Priester on trombone, Joe Farrell, Lenny White, and Ron Carter. The tracks are all originals – written with a style that retains some of the modern edges of Hill's earlier Blue Note work, but which also shows him opening up and blossoming into more of a spiritualist jazz style. The larger group have an incredibly unified approach, and Farrell's solos in particular really break out with some wonderful moments – helping Hill to realize the soulful modern sound that he was reaching for in his writing, a style that easily makes this one of his most compelling albums! Really really great stuff – finally restored from tapes that had languished for years because of inferior quality. And the material's never been issued before – not even by Mosaic – with titles that include "The Brown Queen", "Cascade", "Yesterday's Tomorrow", "Sideways", "Passing Ships", and "Noon Tide". ✨✧ Graham CollierDown Another Road/Songs For My Father/Mosaics ... CD
Fontana/Philips/BGO (UK), 1969/1970/1971. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
3 incredible albums from the British jazz scene at the end of the 60s – all together in one 2CD package! Down Another Road is incredible work from one of England's greatest jazz talents – bassist Graham Collier, a player with an amazing ability to absorb a lot of the modern and progressive influences of his jazz generation – but all without succumbing to the same indulgences as them – a fact which resulted in a razor-sharp style that forged some of the freshest jazz ever to come out of the UK. This 1969 album is a masterpiece – filled with a modal groove and a strident searching theme, yet also as tight and grooving as most of the best Blue Note sessions from the same time. Harry Beckett's on trumpet, Nick Evans is on trombone, John Marshall plays drums, and Stan Sulzmann handles the reeds. Tracks include "Down Another Road", "Danish Blue", "The Barley Mow", and "Aberdeen Angus". Songs For My Father is a masterpiece of modernist soul jazz, with a sound that recalls the best late Blue Note work by Lee Morgan or Hank Mobley. Alan Wakeman's tenor is perfectly pitched, and searingly searching; Harry Beckett's trumpet is round, lyrical, and filled with soul; and the piano of John Taylor comps along in chunky modal grooves that make the whole album fall together brilliantly. Tracks include "Song One", "Song Two", "Song Three", etc – and they're all fantastic! Mosaics is a wonderfully searching session – filled with warm McCoy Tyner-esque modal moments, and searing post-Coltrane solos! The album comprises one long piece – Collier's "Mosaics" – performed live by a group that includes Alan Wakeman on tenor and soprano, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and Geoff Castle on piano. "Mosaics" has that amazing mid 60s Coltrane quality of going out in a spiritual kind of way – yet always returning to the groove, never getting too free, and always remaining firmly focused on the direction ahead. All players are great, and the record crackles with the intensity of a classic session on Impulse! CD

A real Latin standard of the 50s – packaged with a title and a cover that perfectly evoke the lure of pre-Castro Cuba at its best – and played by Perez Prado with a style that's more open and flowing than some of his earlier singles! The album's got a really unified feel overall – still in that "ugh" groove that was Prado's trademark in the 50s, but coming across with more complicated horn parts and a number of key moments that offer sparer percussion outings in a really evocative way.
