CrowMosaic (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Amaret/Sundazed, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
The last album that Crow would ever give the world, and a great capper to their short by strong run of records in the early 70s! Like so many of the harder-edged American rock groups of the time, these guys have moved completely past the blues that inspired their initial sounds – working out plenty of their own inflections on guitar and organ, at a level that's never slavish at all to the roots – and which instead really serves to provide the perfect polish for the nicely sinister vocals on the set! Titles include "Easy Street", "Sky Is Crying", "Watch That Cat", "Watching Can Waste Up The Time", "Yellow Dawg", "Satisfied", and "Let's Not Say Goodbye" – the prophetic last song on the record. Bennie GreenBennie Green – Mosaic Select (Back On The Scene/Soul Stirrin/45 Session/Walkin & Talkin/Congo Lament) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $44.99
5 of the best records ever by trombonist Bennie Green – a hell of a soulful player who cut some killer late 50s albums for Blue Note! The set features 3 albums issued under Green's own name – Walkin & Talkin, Back On The Scene, and Soul Stirrin – plus one more album's worth of material that was only issued on 45s (45 Session), and the quite rare Congo Lament – originally recorded in 1962, but not issued until 1980, and even then only briefly, under the name of Ike Quebec. Together, the 5 albums give a fantastic picture of Green's genius – really driving tunes that crackle with energy, and which feature trombone work that's tighter than that of most trumpeters of the time – and which really brings together the best uses of bass and brass that the instrument allows. Players on the sessions include Sonny Clark, Charlie Rouse, Billy Root, Gene Ammons, Elvin Jones, Gildo Mahones, and Art Blakey – and Babs Gonzales even sings on a few tracks! Titles include "Soul Stirrin", "We Wanna Cook", "BG Mambo", "Que's Pill", "IQ Shuffle", "Encore", "It's Groovy", "Green Leaves", and "The Shouter". 33 tracks in all! CD
(Out of print. Box has some very light wear, but is great overall.)

✨✧ Andrew HillAndrew Hill – Mosaic Select Solo (From California With Love sessions) (3CD set) ... CD
Artists House/Mosaic, 1978. Used 3 CDs ... $79.99
A treasure trove of unreleased material from pianist Andrew Hill – the full sessions recorded for his album From California With Love – including the 2 tracks that appeared on that album, plus 12 more long numbers appearing here for the first time ever! The package offers up beautiful solo work from Andrew Hill – tracks that spin out with more freedom and exploration than even most of his other 70s recordings! The style here is wonderfully laidback – never obsessed with the freedom too much, and instead concerned with painting beautiful little pictures in sound – exploring the themes of the tunes with a sense of color, and a feeling of joy that's also mixed with just the right amount of sadness the increase the depth of the work. Titles include "From California With Love" and "Reverend Du Bop", both from the original album – plus "Gone With The Wind", "Moonlit Monterey", "17 Mile Drive", "California Tinge", "Napa Valley Twilight", "Above Big Sur", "An Afternoon In Berkeley", "Pastoral Pittsburg", and "Pittsburg Impasse". Clifford JordanMosaic – (Starting Time/A Story Tale) ... CD
Milestone, 1961. Used ... $14.99
"Starting Time" is a great early 60s session by Jordan – who at the time of the recording, was one of a number of firey young tenor players from Chicago – all of them hard-blowing, with a nice soulful bottom that opened up a bop sound to more moods and emotions – but Jordan stood apart from most of them with an approach that was decidedly more complex and forward-thinking. As you'll hear on the album's tracks, he wasn't content enough to just blow off a riff – but had to twist things up a bit, working a tune for more shades and colors than it might yield with another player, pushing on the proceedings with an edge that's very strong. The great Wilbur Ware's on bass, and a young Cedar Walton's playing piano, and with warmth like that, Jordan and trumpeter Kenny Dorham sound great next to each other. Loads of original hard bop lines by Jordan, including "Extempore" and "Quittin' Time", plus "Mosaic" and "One Flight Down" by Cedar Walton. Even better is A Story Tale – a brilliant collaboration between Clifford Jordan and Sonny Red! Red's tone is excellent – a sharper one next to Jordan's more supple blowing – and the pair are a perfect team to lead off tunes like "Prints", "Hip Pockets", "A Story Tale", and "Defiance". CD

Dizzy ReeceDizzy Reece – Mosaic Select (Blues In Trinity/Star Bright/Soundin' Off/Comin' On) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $64.99
The complete Blue Note recordings of trumpeter Dizzy Reece – an amazing West Indian player who made some big waves on the London scene of the late 50s, then came to the US to cut a few key sides! Reece had an approach to the trumpet that shared some of the boldness of his US contemporaries on the hardbop scene, but which also occasionally had a few more exotic touches as well – not just in Dizzy's phrasing, but also in the way he liked to set up a tune – mixing modern and soulful modes together nicely, in a way that made him a perfect match for the Blue Note era that boasted work by Horace Silver and Art Blakey! The 3CD set features Dizzy's three Blue Note albums Blues In Trinity, Star Bright, and Soundin Off – plus material that was unissued at the time, but later appeared on the now-deleted Comin On CD – a real lost treasure of a session that has Dizzy stepping out even more strongly than before. Players include Hank Mobley, Tubby Hayes, Donald Byrd, Art Taylor, Walter Bishop Jr, Stanley Turrentine, Musa Kaleem, and Art Blakey – and titles include "Blues In Trinity", "Color Blind", "Shepherd's Serenade", "Groovesville", "The Rebound", "A Variation On Monk", "Blue Streak", "Ye Olde Blues", "Comin On", "Sands", "Goose Dance", "Achmet", and "The Case Of The Frightened Lover". Randy WestonRandy Weston – Mosaic Select (Piano A La Mode/Little Miles/Live At The Five Spot/Unissued Session/Uhuru Afrika/Highlife) ... CD
Mosaic/United Artists/Roulette, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $49.99 59.99
Some of the most important work ever recorded by Randy Weston – 5 early albums that really pushed the boundaries of modern jazz! First up on the set is Little Niles – a fantastic set that features some of Weston's best early compositions – angular and Monk-ish numbers, but with a profound influence from African rhythms. Next up is Live At The Five Spot – a really compelling live set that features Randy working out Little Niles-ish numbers with a live group that includes Kenny Dorham and Coleman Hawkins. After that is Piano A La Mode – a sublimely simple album of mellow piano tracks – followed by a series of previously unissued tracks done with a quartet that includes Roy Haynes, Cecil Payne, and Ron Carter. Following that are some of Randy's most Afro-centric albums – very unique for the time, and equally powerful today – the records Uhuru Afrika and Highlife – both of which feature larger groups working through some distinctly African ideas in jazz. Nearly every record features arrangements by Melba Liston – and if you've ever wondered where to start with Randy, this is it – because the set encapsulates nearly all of the biggest contributions he ever made to jazz! 40 titles in all – with tunes that include "Little Niles", "Nice Ice", "Earth Birth", "Gingerbread", "Saucer Eyes", "204", "CB Blues", "Where", "Fe Double U Blues", "African Lady", "Bantu", "Kucheza Blues", "Blues To Africa", and "Congolese Children". A wonderfully groovy set – every bit as great as you might guess from the title and the cover – and the very first installment in the now-legendary Mood Mosaic series! The set's one of the few to bring together tunes from the groovier side of the spectrum at the end of the 60s – work from British, French, American, and German sources – all awash in a great blend of funky, easy, and pop-oriented modes! There's a nicely trippy feel throughout – and titles include "Hascisch Party" by George Garvarenz, "Kiss This" by Claude Denjean, "Acka Raga" by Shocking Blue, "Mas Que Nada" by Luiz Enriquez, "En Melody" by Serge Gainsbourg, "Love For Sale" by Marian McPartland, "Batucada" by Phil Crewe, "Marins Armins Amant Ou Maris" by Michel Legrand, and "Sitar Beat" by Klaus Doldinger. 6th volume in the great Mood Mosaic series, with a theme that focuses on swingin' female jazz singers – mostly of the light breezy Euro variety. There's loads of rare cuts on here by Sheila Jordan, France Gall, Alice Babs, Monika Linges, Flora Purim, Annete Peacock, and April Aloisio – plus tracks by other artists that have jazzy vocals, like stuff by Cal Tjader, Barney Wilen, and Sinatra. As usual, this Mood Mosaic comp's slightly different than the last one, but (also as usual) it's compiled with a lot of care, and features loads of hard to find tracks with a groovy clubby sound! CD

✨✧ Sam RiversSam Rivers & The Rivbea Orchestra – Trilogy – Mosaic Select (3CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 2008/2009. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Vital late work from the amazing Sam Rivers – masterful, energetic jazz orchestra pieces recorded live and in the studio with players culled from Orlando and the Central Florida areas around Rivers' adopted home – a treasure that finds Sam sounding as spry and fiercely creative in his 80s has he was half a lifetime ago! Trilogy features 3 unreleased sets – 2 live and one with studio recordings – and it's remarkably vibrant throughout. Sam started dabbling with orchestra jazz in the 70s, bring muscularity and dissonance to big band music in a wholly unique way, and he's been doing it as brilliantly as ever in recent years. 14 horns bring complex, but melodic sweep to the sound, with a 2 piece rhythm. We've been blown away by most of Sam's late period efforts and this exceptional 3CD set from Mosaic is as great as any of it. Players include Jeff Rupert, Chris Charles, David Pate and others on saxes, Tom Parmenter, Brian Scanlon and more trumpet players, Keith Oshiro and David Sheffield on trombone, Doug Mathews on bass and Rion Smith on drums. The first disc (Offering) was recorded at the Plaza Theater in Orlando in November of '08. Includes "Spice", "Ganymede", "Crux", "Aura", "Perkin" and "Pulsar". Disc two (Progeny) was recorded at Sonic Cauldron Studios in Casselberry, FL earlier in '08, and it includes "Robyn", "Cindy", "Monique", "Traci", Iisha", "Destiny" and more. Disc Three (Edge) is a return to the Plaza Theatre in April of '09, and it includes "Ridge", "Brink", "Precipice", "Verge", "Visions", "Point" and more. CD

A super cool set in the Mood Mosaic series – and plentifully funky, soulful and jazzy, too! Like our other favorite volumes, this one covers a lot of stylistic territory, but it ultimately feels a little more coherent from track-to-track than the last couple sets, and does so without sacrificing the far-reaching sense of adventure, or ever settling into a predictable mode. Great stuff from start to finish, with breezy, funk-steeped jazz rock, straighter jazz funk instrumentals, Late 60s Brit mod soul, late 70s US jazzy soul and lots more! Includes "Mr. Man" by Air, "The Bird & The Squirrel" by War, "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever" by The Peddlers, "Holiday Time" by Hildegard Knef, "Playmate" by Rolf Kuhn, "The Snake" by Harvey Mandel, "Brother Where Are You" by Freddie Cole, "Beggar For The Blues" by Patti Drew, "Supercool" by Carrie Riley & The Fascinations, "Why Don't You Play The Organ, Man" by Memphis Black, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas & more. Tremendous work from the immediate post-Coltrane years of McCoy Tyner – five albums' worth of material that show the pianist stretching out in bold new directions! Although a key part of the John Coltrane Quartet for most of the 60s, Tyner really hit a wonderful new vibe after the passing of the Great One – soaring into beautifully expansive directions with his music, and taking on some of the best impulses of the soul jazz underground of the time! These sessions – mostly recorded at the end of the 60s, but also featuring one date from a few years later – feature McCoy working with players who include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Gary Bartz on alto sax, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Freddie Waits on drums, Harold Vick on soprano sax, Alice Coltrane on harp, and Hubert Laws on flute. And the range of settings is wide too – ranging from small trio, to soaring larger group sides, to a few numbers done with a bit of added strings. 3CD set features the albums Expansions, Cosmos, Extensions, and Asante – a total of 21 long tracks in all! Tabackin's reeds are great too – always handled with bold lines, and a strongly visionary sound – and other players on the dates include Bill Perkins and Gary Foster on saxes, Bobby Shew and Ron Raider on trumpets, Britt Woodman and Charlie Loper on trombones, Don Baldwin on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. The 3CD set features 5 albums in all – Kogun, Long Yellow Road, Tales Of A Courtesan, Insights, and March Of The Tadpoles – and titles include "Elegy", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Opus Number Zero", "Since Perry/Yet Another Tear", "Strive For Jive", "Village", "Studio J", "Mobile", "Deracinated Flower", and "Notorious Tourist From The East". ✨✧ Art BlakeyMosaic ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD

Blue Note, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant celebration of Blue Note Records – one that features some key songs from the label's classic years, interpreted by a sharp-edged group of younger players! The lineup here is wonderful – Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Steve Wilson on alto and flute, Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and rhythm from Bill Charlap on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – all players who are great in their own right, but who really come together with a classic sort of sound here – a vibe that really respects the Blue Note leaders of years past, and which really gets their energy right! The rhythms are tremendous – no surprise, given how great Nash and Washington can be – and the tunes have a soulful, soaring quality that draws on all the joy Blue Note's given the world over the years – proclaimed boldly by the horn solos in the set. Titles include "Little B's Poem", "Inner Urge", "Mosaic", "Dolphin Dance", "Criss Cross", "Search For Peace", "The Outlaw", and "Idle Moments". CD

What a subtitle – "The Cult Tracks Given Birth By The Superheroes Of The 70s"! And if you're thinking that the tracks are by Wolverine, Firestorm, and other 70s comic book creations, that's not the case – as the superheroes here are funky ones! More specifically, the tracks are great little groovers from the funky 45 underground – the kind of groups that really bubbled under in the charts at the time, many of whom never cut a full LP, but who released some monstrously great singles that made more than a bit of impact at the time. The set's got 20 tracks in all – all hard and funky – with titles that include "Super Soul Brother" by Timmie Rodgers, "Stand Up (part 1)" by Maskman & The Agents, "Spanky's Day Off" by Swingin Soul Machine, "It's The Real Thing (part 1)" by Electric Express, "Get It" by Wilmer & The Dukes, "Feelin Funky" by Brother Soul, "Cramp Your Style" by All the People, "Can't Get Satisfied" by Brother Jack McDuff, "Dynomite" by Tony Camillo's Bazuka, and "Foxy Lady" by Don Thompson. One of the coolest entries we've ever seen in this excellent series – a package that's heavy on rare funk tracks from overseas, most of which we're never likely to find on vinyl in our neck of the woods! There's a slinky, sexy groove to most of these cuts – very 70s, with plenty of sweet electric elements, and lots of keyboards too – and although the vocals are part of the sound, the strength of the cuts really lies in the instrumentation – especially on the longer numbers that really take off strongly! Titles include "Puutharassa" by Pekka Streng, "Ombilic Contact" by Atomic Crocus, "Erotica" by Agua Turbia, "Primitivo" by Hareton Salvanini, "September 13" by Deodato, "Dingo" by Olivier Despax, "Animal" by Farm, and "Psychastenie" by Serge Gainsbourg. Pivotal work from trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – eleven full albums recorded by the young jazzman as a leader, together showing a really incredible scope of his talents in just a few short years in the studio! The Blue Note albums here already show an incredible evolution – from initial hardbop crackle at the best level of the label, to a slight shift into new thing territory that marks a more experimental side of Freddie's work that would take off later in the 60s. There's also two Impulse Records releases in the package – the completely sublime sextet outing of The Artistry Of Freddie Hubbard – a great date with Curtis Fuller on trombone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and John Gilmore on tenor – making a rare appearance in the studio away from the Sun Ra Arkestra! The other Impulse album is titled Body & Soul – and has Hubbard amidst a larger group of modernists on most tracks, with these incredible Wayne Shorter arrangements – then in a small group with shorter on tenor and Eric Dolphy on alto and flute. Blue Note albums include Breaking Point, Blue Spirits, Open Sesame, Going Up, Hub Cap, Ready For Freddie, Hub Tones, and Here To Stay – with players who include Tina Brooks, Jimmy Heath, and Wayne Shorter on tenors; McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, and Herbie Hancock on pianos; Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, and Reggie Workman on basses; and James Spaulding making a key early appearance on alto and flute. 70 long tracks in all – and a very detailed booklet of notes with rare photos! A sweet late 70s set from Freddie Hubbard – a slight move away from some of his highly-electric sides of the CTI years, yet one that still has some of the most soulful qualities of that work! Freddie's trumpet has a nicely spacious quality throughout – one that's flowing, and almost glowing at time – cascading along with qualities you might be more likely to hear from Art Farmer on some of the gentler numbers, yet really bursting out with that old Hubbard dynamism on the rest. Other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Hubert Laws on flute, Kenny Barron on piano and keyboards, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and George Benson also guests on guitar on one number too. Mosaic, Mid 40s. New Copy 11CDs ... $178.99 179.00
An incredible document of a really crucial label during the postwar years – the important west coast indie, Black & White Records – home to an amazing array of top-shelf jazz, blues, and R&B recordings from the time! The scope of work here is fantastic – 243 tracks in all, much of it material that was only ever issued on 78rpm discs, including some in the 12" format – the longer version of the early single that Black & White often used to present longer versions of jazz recordings, with more room for solos. The focus here is on the jazz side of the label, and much of the material was recorded in LA, but some were done in New York and other cities too – including early production work by jazz giants like Leonard Feather and Norman Granz – which will give you an idea of the top-shelf quality of the sessions. The jazz recordings are a mix of vocal, bop, trad, and swing styles – and the late 40s sides often hit that spot where jazz and blues came together in jumping modes that represented early R&B – which almost makes the whole package an evolution in styles during these crucial 40s years. There's way too much to mention here, as you might guess from an 11CD set – and the package features work by Ivie Anderson, Etta Jones, Charlie Ventura, Wilbert Baranco, Erroll Garner, Joe Marsala, Jack McVea, Nat Jaffee, Red Callender, Phil Moore, Earl Spencer, Tommy Todd, Gerald Wilson, Howard McGhee, Lucky Thompson, Ernestine Anderson, Barney Bigard, the Hip Chicks, Jo Evans, Mushmouth Robinson, and many others – all presented with a very detailed booklet of notes. A much-needed collection of the famous Jazz At The Philharmonic performances of the 1950s – work that follows up the initial postwar run from producer/presenter Norman Granz, which helped lay the groundwork for Verve Records – but which hasn't gotten the full exposure it deserves! Unlike the 40s sessions, there's a lot of material here that never made it to CD – including tracks from the multi-record box set releases that included JATP volumes 11, 15, 16, and 17 – plus the Jazz Concert #1 album, Jazz At The Hollywood Bowl, and various Opera House sessions – and even the Lester Young Carnegie Blues record, which appeared later on vinyl! Some unreleased tracks have been added to the set too – and as with Mosaic Records at its best, this is less a reissue package than a proper presentation of material that was scattered out there in various formats – finally presented in the right order, with detailed notes, and really great sound. Artists are the cream of the crop of Verve at the time – Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Herb Ellis, Buddy DeFranco, Sonny Stitt, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, and others – plus some non-Verve artist surprises as well! Very limited, and comes with a huge booklet of notes and performance details too. CD

A lost Duke Ellington gem from the late 50s – a session that has a decidedly different look than some of his other records of the time! We don't know if the Duke was into Sun Ra – but it almost seems like he was copping his thunder with this title and band name – a fair bit more flashy than the usual presentation for the Ellington group! The record's not nearly as trippy as you'd expect – but it's still a prime set of Ellingtonia from those key late 50s years – material played by a smaller group of "Spacemen" than Duke's fuller orchestra – with a bit more room for small group interaction, almost in a Verve mode. Players include Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet, Clark Terry on trumpet, Paul Gonzalves on tenor, Quentin Jackson on trombone, and Jimmy Woode on bass – and titles include "Avalon", "Midnight Sun", "Spacemen", "Bass-ment", "Early Autumn", and "Jones". Columbia/Mosaic, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from Art Farmer – and actually almost a completely different record than the album pictured on the cover! The material here was recorded in the same sessions as the Columbia album issued under the name The Time & The Place – but none of it was issued on vinyl back in the 60s, and only 3 of the tracks made a brief appearance on a 2LP set at the end of the 70s. But despite that obscurity, the whole thing's wonderful – a really sublime live performance by Art Farmer with one of his hippest groups ever – recorded at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York! The tracks are all quite long, with more room for soloing than most other Farmer records of the 60s – and in addition to Art's great work on flugelhorn, the group also features Jimmy Heath on tenor, Albert Dailey on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – a killer lineup that keeps things hip throughout! Heath really adds a lot to the set – bringing in a sharper tone that's given plenty of space here to unfold – and Dailey's as great on this record as Cedar Walton was on the original album of the same name. Titles include "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "On The Trail", "Far Away Lands", "Dailey Bread", "Blue Bossa", "Is That So", and "The Time & The Place". CD

Although Grant Green has been getting a lot of attention lately for his heavy-duty funk work of the late 60s, it's the subtly beautiful work of the early 60's that first caught our attention years ago. From the start of his young career, Green was an amazing player who had developed a unique single-note approach to soloing that was positively riveting. And while his appearances on other Blue Note albums were filled with a heavy soul jazz sound that had Green playing next to organ and tenor, material like this gives you a perfect chance to hear how well he could swing a group on his own, with little other accompaniment than a tight rhythm section, and some soulful piano from Sonny Clark. None of this material was issued at the time. Includes material that appeared on the later albums Gooden's Corner, Oleo, Born To Be Blue, and Nigeria – plus tracks from The World Of Jazz Guitar, and Blue & Sentimental by Ike Quebec. ✨✧ Lennie TristanoLennie Tristano – Personal Recordings 1946 to 1970 (6CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of music from the great pianist Lennie Tristano – and maybe the first-ever set to truly get at the range of genius he could express on the piano! Given that Tristano only made a small amount of records during his too-short career, yet also left a major impact on the field of modern jazz – this set really documents the full span of everything that Tristano had to offer – pulled from a wonderful range of his own recordings, all of which appear here for the first time! These aren't casual solo recordings done in the basement – and instead, the package brings together a mixture of studio, live, and even television performances – all with a different spirit on each of the CDs in the set! One of the most revelatory is the final CD – which features a number of tracks in a "free session" in 1948 - with Tristano on piano, Lee Konitz on alto, Warne Marsh on tenor, and Billy Bauer on guitar – coming together with an amazing sound throughout. That same disc also features a superb 1962 live date at the Half Note – with Konitz on alto and Zoot Sims on tenor. CD1 is wonderful too – a selection of live material with the tremendous Billy Bauer on piano – a player, like Tristano, who was instrumental in shaping the sound of his instrument in modern jazz during the postwar years. CD3 features live performances by a sextet that includes Konitz, Marsh, and Bauer – plus Arnold Fishkin on bass and Jeff Morton on drums. CD2 features beautiful solo performances recorded from the early 50s through 1970. CD4 features trio session, most with Peter Ind on bass – while CD5 features different trio and duo material, but with Sonny Dallas on bass. The set is impeccably done – in cooperation with Tristano's family – and given the wealth of material, the whole thing may well have doubled his recording catalog in the process, while also really illuminating so many different aspects of his career! ✨✧ Joe ZawinulZawinul ... CD
Atlantic/Mosaic, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful fusion of Joe Zawinul's roots in the groups of Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley – a set with some of the far-reaching jazz ideas of the former, and much of the soulful subtleties of the latter! The album features Joe on electric piano throughout, playing alongside Herbie Hancock in a twin-piano style that's quite spacious, and filled with slow-building, long-flowing lines! Other players include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Earl Turbington on soprano sax, George Davis on flute, Miroslav Vitous and Walter Booker on drums, and Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, and David Lee on a range of percussion. All these elements are used slowly, and sparingly – brought in with a style that's modern, but in a gentle sort of way – not as over the top as some of the work that Joe cut with Miles at the end of the 60s – and almost a more sensitive, compositional approach to the same territory of music. Titles include "Arrival In New York", "Doctor Honoris Causa", "In A Silent Way", "His Last Journey", and "Double Image". CD

Columbia/Mosaic, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Key work by one of the most unique voices in 60s mainstream jazz – reedman Charles Lloyd, heard here on a set that's filled with amazing sounds, tones, and timings! The group here features Gabor Szabo on guitar – Lloyd's previous partner from the Chico Hamilton combo – plus Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – the latter two of whom have a great ear for the already-unusual sense of rhythm that Lloyd and Szabo picked up when working with Chico – and who also seem to bring in just a bit more "new thing" edge to the record. Lloyd plays both flute and tenor – the latter of which sounds sharper here than we remember – and titles include the cuts "Of Course, Of Course", "3rd Floor Richard", "Apex", "Goin' To Memphis", and "One For Joan". ✨✧ Charles MingusJazz Workshop Concerts 1964/1965 (7CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1964/1965. Used 7CD ... Out Of Stock
Key moments in the career of Charles Mingus – all recorded during the crucial years of 1964 and 1965, and featuring the first-time release of a fair bit of live material too! The set represents the first full presentation of recordings that have appeared piecemeal on a handful of obscure releases – self-released records from Mingus himself – Town Hall, My Favorite Quintet, and Music Written For Monterey – all really expanded here with the full recordings of the tracks, and unreleased titles provided from the original tapes! Mingus was really on fire during these years – severed from most of his bigger label associations, and freely working on some of his most inventive ideas with various smaller groups of players – all fresh young talents who were key interpreters of Charles' ideas – including Johnny Coles and Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, Jimmy Owens on trumpet and flugelhorn, Charles McPherson on alto sax, Clifford Jordan on tenor, Jaki Byard on piano, Eric Dolphy on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. The stalwart Dannie Richmond is on drums, and the sides represent some of Dolphy's last, and most important recordings on the planet – recordings done at Town Hall and in Amsterdam in April of 1964 – in addition to live material at Monterey in 1964 and 1965, in Minneapolis in May of 1965. Tracks are all quite long – some pushing the half-hour timing – and as with the best live Mingus, there's variations here that go way past any studio readings – really incredible solo flights that are still beautifully integrated with the ideas of the main group. Titles include "So Long Eric", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress Then Blue Silk", "Mingus Piano Solo", "Bird Preamble", "Themeless Blues", "Copa City Titty", "A Lonely Day In Selma", "Cocktails For Two", "Praying With Eric", "Parkeriana", "ATFW", "Meditations On A Pair Of Wire Cutters", and "Meditations On Integration". 7CDs, limited edition, and with a great book of notes too! ✨✧ Ike QuebecComplete Blue Note 45 Sessions Of Ike Quebec (3LP set) ... LP
Blue Note/Mosaic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
The "flipside" of Ike Quebec's legendary run of albums for Blue Note – a huge set of material recorded only as 45 singles during his same stretch at the label! Although Quebec's work as a soulful tenorist has been well documented and reissued over the years on albums like Blue & Sentimental and Heavy Soul, Ike also cut a fair number of singles aimed at the jukebox and radio crowds of the time – tunes that were more in the gutsy tenor and organ mode recorded by labels like Prestige or Chess, and which never made it onto any of the full-length sets for Blue Note! This great little package brings together all of Ike's 26 tracks recorded for 45s in the late 50s and early 60s – material that features organ on most numbers, played by either Ike Quebec, Sir Charles Thompson, or the enigmatic Edwin Swanston. Quebec's tone and phrasing is similar to his Blue Note LP work of the period, but there's also a more relaxed, and more punctuated feel to these recordings – one that's not as rough or raw as other jukebox tenor stars of the time, but which still steps out past the usual Blue Note poise, especially on the original numbers. Some tracks were briefly issued on the 80s collection With A Song In My Heart, and in a Mosaic box – but this is the first proper Blue Note album of the material. Titles include "Buzzard Lope", "Zonky", "Blue Monday", "Later For The Rock", "Dear John", "Blue Friday", "Ill Wind", "Mardis Gras", "Everything Happens To Me", "Me N Mabe", "All The Way", "Intermezzo", "All Of Me", and "Imagination". A four disc collection of Taylor's groundbreaking early 60s work recorded for Candid with Buell Neidlinger and Archie Shepp! A wonderful 4 disc box set documenting one of our favorite jazz guitarist's work for one of our favorite jazz labels. We initially got hip to Grant Green on his amazing funky jazz sides, but as we made our way back through his recording career, we discovered a wealth of sublime material. The tracks collected here are pulled from over 30 albums, and span a wide section of the post bop spectrum, with two discs worth focusing on his work in organ combos, the second on quartet settings, like the Grant Green/Sonny Clark set on Mosaic and the last his work on hard bop sides. As you might imagine, the list of sidemen's pretty exhaustive, and so is the track lising, but rest assured there's plenty of solid material here, like "Baby's Minor Lope" off Grant's First Stand, "Swingin At Sugar Ray's" off Baby Face Willette's Face To Face, "Bop Bop Bing Bash" off George Braith's Soul Stream, "Let 'Em Roll" off John Patton's Let 'Em Roll, "Talkin' Bout JC" off Talkin' Bout, "Plaza Del Toros" off Larry Young's "Into Somethin", "Round Midnight" off Green Street, "It Ain't Necessarily So" off Nigeria, "Uh Huh" off Hank Mobley's Workout, "Blues For Charlie" off Ike Quebec's Blue & Sentimental and "A Tune For Richard" off Horace Parlan's Happy Frame Of Mind, plus many, many more. Andrew HillPassing Ships (previously unissued) ... CD
Blue Note, 1969. Used ... $24.99
Astounding work from pianist Andrew Hill – a rare session that was recorded for Blue Note in 1969, and issued here for the first time! The work has an extremely ambitious approach – with Hill leading a 9 piece group that includes Woody Shaw, Dizzy Reece, Julian Priester on trombone, Joe Farrell, Lenny White, and Ron Carter. The tracks are all originals – written with a style that retains some of the modern edges of Hill's earlier Blue Note work, but which also shows him opening up and blossoming into more of a spiritualist jazz style. The larger group have an incredibly unified approach, and Farrell's solos in particular really break out with some wonderful moments – helping Hill to realize the soulful modern sound that he was reaching for in his writing, a style that easily makes this one of his most compelling albums! Really really great stuff – finally restored from tapes that had languished for years because of inferior quality. And the material's never been issued before – not even by Mosaic – with titles that include "The Brown Queen", "Cascade", "Yesterday's Tomorrow", "Sideways", "Passing Ships", and "Noon Tide". CD

A solid mix of traditionals and then contemporary folk songs – stripped down and honest takes on "Saly Free And Easy", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Mr Tamborine Man", "Going To Memphis", Something Lonesome", "Mist On The Mountain" and more. This edition includes bonus tracks from a rare 45 – "Hangman" and "Leaves That Are Green". Next is the self-titled John Renbourn from 1965 – a set that would not only establish John's legacy for years to come, but also have a very strong impact upon the role of the guitar on the British scene too! The album's definitely in a mode that owes something to an American folk legacy – but it also really breaks from the past with unusual phrasings and colorings in Renbourn's guitar – certainly with an ear towards ancient English modes, but also at once very fresh and contemporary – a strong precursor to the waves of new acoustic talents that would flow from the UK a few years later, but maybe even more revolutionary – given that John's mostly just working here with his guitar and voice. Bert Jansch adds guitar to a few tracks – and titles include "Song", "Down On The Barge", "Plainsong", "Judy", "Beth's Blues", "Blue Bones", "Train Tune", "Winter Is Gone", and "Noah & Rabbit". Bert & John is a hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Another Monday is maybe the most obscure album in the collection – a set that is mostly instrumental, with some completely fantastic work by Renbourn on guitar – but which also features a bit of guest vocals from singer Jacqui McShee – whose warmer presence next to John really makes for a nice pairing. The album's as powerful as it is subtle, really beautiful in its sense of variety – with titles that include "Buffalo", "One For William", "Lost Lover Blues", "Another Monday", "Day At The Seaside", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", and "Waltz". Watch The Stars is another great collaboration with Dorris Henderson – an American singer, but one who moved to London in the 60s – where she cut this rare gem with guitarist John Renbourn! The album's got a righteous vibe that's hipper than the usual folk set – with some traditional tunes and some contemporary material – recorded with that amazing phrasing that made Renbourn's guitar so distinct right from the start, with lots of those jazzy currents we love so much – and which really fit the creative vocal approach of Henderson! Dorris also plays some autoharp, and there's a bit of bass in the backings – although overall the main focus here is on Renbourn's guitar and Henderson's vocals. Titles include "Come Up Horsey", "God Bless The Child", "Watch The Stars", "30 Days In Jail", "Mosaic Patterns", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", and "There's Anger In This Land". Sir John A Lot Of is perhaps one of the best-known albums from British guitar legend John Renbourn – as it was issued widely in the US, and kept in print for a surprisingly long time over the years! The approach here is slightly different than Renbourn's previous records – a bit in the image presented by the cover, although with maybe not as slavish a sound – as John just uses the whole thing to go a bit more ancient than before, in ways that echo the time travel that the whole British folk scene was taking as the 70s approached. The tunes are done in ways that are really beautiful – still lots of the incredible guitar work that made Renbourn such a standout on the scene – plus flute from jazzman Ray Warleigh, who's very different here than usual – and spare use of finger cymbals, African drums, and glockenspiel by Terry Cox. Titles include "Morgana", "Transfusion", "The Trees They Do Grow High", "Sweet Potato", "Seven Up", and "White Fishes". 6CD box features all records in original artwork sleeves, with a booklet of notes – and bonus tracks that include "Message To Pretty", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Lucky Thirteen", "Blues Run The Game", "The Wildest Pig In Captivity (alt)", "Can't Keep From Crying", "Transfusion (alt)", and "The Leaves Are Green". ✨✧ Art BlakeyThree Blind Mice Vol 2 ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual live set from the great Art Blakey – his only album for the United Artists label, but one that continues the tradition of the expanded group style he was starting to use at Blue Note! The lineup here is a sextet, one that's got even more power than the Jazz Messengers as a quintet – a group that bridges generations with older Messengers Wayne Shorter on tenor and Jymie Merritt on bass – alongside rising talents Curtis Fuller on trombone, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Cedar Walton on piano – the last of whom leaves a key mark on the group's sound, through his mix of soulful groove and lyrical inflections! There's maybe even more searing energy here than on the previous live Blue Note albums from Blakey. This second volume includes the cuts "Mosaic", "The Promised Land", "Arabia", and "Ping Pong" – all of which are some of the best tracks ever written for the group! CD

The mod sound of 60s London had a lot more to offer than just rock and roll – as you'll hear in this blistering collection of British R&B, soul, and blues-drenched tunes – mixed in with more familiar garage, early psych, and even a few post-colonial elements too! ✨✧ Charles Tolliver Big BandEmperor March – Live At The Blue Note ... CD
Half Note, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Large group live work from Charles Tolliver – a concert performance that has all the depth of his recent comeback album on Mosaic! The approach here is similar to some of the ensemble work that Tolliver cut back in the 70s, but a bit more complicated too – lots of shifting horn passages that top the charts, really filled with soul and imagination – providing a perfect backdrop for breakout solos from players who include Billy Harper and Bill Saxton on tenor sax, Jason Jackson and Mike Dease on trombone, Stanley Cowell on piano, and Tolliver himself on trumpet. Tracks are all quite long, and titles include "On The Nile", "Emperor March", "In The Trenches", "Toughin", and "Chedlike". CD

✨✧ Count BasieBasie At Birdland (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Roulette, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from Count Basie – recorded during the height of his years at Roulette! The back cover of the record proclaims that "Basie Is Back Home" – clearly a bit by Birdland to lay claim to being the Count's home address, which is a bit of a challenge to his KC roots! Whatever the back story, though, the set's a nice one – swinging hard in that completely tight 60s mode, with a great lineup that includes Frank Foster and Budd Johnson on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, Bennie Powell on trombone, and Freddie Green on guitar – a really great group who definitely make the record a cooker! Tracks include "Good Time Blues", "Segue In C", "Little Pony", "Discommotion", and "Whirly Bird", which has a vocal by Jon Hendricks! CD features 8 more bonus tracks – recorded at the same time, and first issued on the Mosaic set Complete Roulette Live Recordings – titles that include "Easin It", "Corner Pocket", "Discommotion", "Whirly Bird (inst)", "I Needs To Be Bee'd With", and "A Little Tempo Please". ✨✧ Curtis MacdonaldCommunity Immunity ... CD
Greenleaf, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Darn compelling sounds from alto saxophonist Curtis MacDonald – very hard to describe, but the sort that grab you immediately upon first listen! MacDonald's got a way of tucking his horn right down in the rhythms of the tracks – finding a way to make all instruments involved move on the same groove – but in ways that are hardly a "groove" at all – no funky jazz, no easy harmelodic lines, and instead these complicated shifting patterns – as rich in their forward motion as they are in their tonal color! The approach is extremely beautiful – as warm as it is fresh and modern – and the instrumentation is played by a shifting lineup of piano, tenor, guitars, and percussion – on titles that include "Childhood Sympathy", "Mosaic 1", "The Imagineer", "My Deal", "Somnolence IV", "Second Guessing", and "Community Immunity".
