Art BlakeyMosaic ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $3.99
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD

Blue Note 7Mosaic – A Celebration Of Blue Note Records (Japanese pressing – with bonus CD) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 2008. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99 24.99
A brilliant celebration of Blue Note Records – one that features some key songs from the label's classic years, interpreted by a sharp-edged group of younger players! The lineup here is wonderful – Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Steve Wilson on alto and flute, Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and rhythm from Bill Charlap on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – all players who are great in their own right, but who really come together with a classic sort of sound here – a vibe that really respects the Blue Note leaders of years past, and which really gets their energy right! The rhythms are tremendous – no surprise, given how great Nash and Washington can be – and the tunes have a soulful, soaring quality that draws on all the joy Blue Note's given the world over the years – proclaimed boldly by the horn solos in the set. Titles include "Little B's Poem", "Inner Urge", "Mosaic", "Dolphin Dance", "Criss Cross", "Search For Peace", "The Outlaw", and "Idle Moments". Limited Japanese pressing contains a bonus CD – featuring the 8 original versions of the tunes by Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Grant Green, Horace Silver, and others! CD

Bob BrookmeyerBob Brookmeyer – Mosaic Select (Bob Brokmeyer Quartet/Traditionalism Revisited/Street Swingers/Kansas City Revisited/Stretching Out) ... CD
Blue Note/Mosaic, 1950s. Used 3 CDs ... $36.99 49.99
An incredible collection of work from Bob Brookmeyer – tracing the development of his sound in the 50s through a variety of different settings! The package begins with material from an original 10" LP session in 1954 – featuring Brookmeyer on trombone with backing by the John Williams trio. The set then expands to feature tracks recorded by Brookmeyer, Jim Hall, and Jimmy Giuffre as material that was originally issued on the album Traditionalism Revisited, but which also features tracks from that session that came out on other more obscure sources, including a Playboy jazz album and a Brookmeyer LP on Crown. The set then follows with a beautiful guitar/trombone session that features Jim Hall, Jimy Raney, and Brookmeyer – originally issued as The Street Swingers. Next up is material from a bluesy 1958 set, recorded with vocalist Big Miller, as well as Paul Quinichette, Al Cohn, and Jim Hall – for the album Kansas City Revisited. The set's completed by material from the beautiful UA album Stretching Out – which featured Zoot Sims, Harry Edison, and Al Cohn – and the whole thing's packaged with a great booklet that gives notes on the material. 37 tracks in all – in a limited, numbered set! Al Cohn, Joe Newman, & Freddie GreenMosaic Select (Natural Seven/Four Trumpets One Tenor/All I Wanna Do Is Swing/I'm Still Swinging/Mr Rhythm) (3CD set) ... CD
RCA/Mosaic, 1955. Used 3 CDs ... $39.99 54.99
A massive set of music recorded for RCA in 1955 – five classic albums, all featuring shifting lineups of players related to the Count Basie Band! The style here is often a bit more modern than most Basie work, but still also shows an undeniably strong sense of rhythm – one that comes into play wonderfully with the tighter RCA approach to hornwork of the 50s – which often brings out some of the sharper edges of the players. Although the material's been partially issued separately over the years, this complete Mosaic package is a real delight through and through – as it brings together all albums in one set, showing shared players and a very similar sensibility running through all the record. Albums include The Natural Seven, led by Al Cohn on tenor and featuring Joe Newman on trumpet and Freddie Green on guitar; Mr Rhythm, led by guitarist Green, and featuring Newman, Cohn, and trombonist Henry Coker; Lullaby Of Birdland, a leaderless date with Newman, Cohn, and Green, plus Frank Rehak on trombone and Ernie Wilkins on alto; I'm Still Swinging, led by newman with Cohn on tenor, Urbie Green on trombone, and Gene Quill on alto; and The Jazz Workshop Four Brass One Tenor – a set that has Cohn's tenor with trumpets from Newman, Thad Jones, Joe Wilder, Bernie Glow, Phil Sunkel, and Nick Travis – each playing in shifting lineups. The package features a whopping 61 tracks in all – and the usual thorough Mosaic notes! CD

De La SoulArt Official Intelligence – Mosaic Thump – Clean Version ... LP
Tommy Boy, 2000. Near Mint- 3LP ... $24.99
Leave it to De La to actually package their clean promo album in a cool way, with tracks spread out on 3 DJ friendly 12"s of this excellent later LP. All hits and almost no misses – starting with "Oooh", easily the best single of the '00, featuring some nice quotes from classic hip hop tracks ranging from the Funky 4 + 1 to Mos Def, and some of Redman's best verses in a while. De La Soul basically started the whole skits-between-songs concept, or at least they perfected it, and (unlike too many other artists) here they get it right again – even the three hilarious "Ghostweed" skits featuring cameo appearances from Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, and Black Thought hold up to repeated listenings. Also includes "My Writes", "Thru Ya City", "All Good?", "Words FromThe Chief Rocker" and the "Art Of Getting Jumped" – 16 tracks in all. LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter GordonDexter Gordon – Mosaic Select (Nights At The Keystone Vols 1, 2, & 3) ... CD
Mosaic, 1978/1979. Used 3 CDs ... $64.99
Late live recordings from the mighty Dexter Gordon – 3 CDs worth of material recorded at the Keystone Korner in the late 70s, all with an inventively-blown power to match Gordon's earlier live sets from the European scene! The format here is similar – with Dexter out front, laying down incredible lines on tenor sax – and getting support from George Cables on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums. But in a way, the music here is even stronger than before – as Gordon's got a sharper edge, focused solo approach, and is working with an agility that really leaves us breathless. The tracks are long, but have the energy of Gordon's shorter studio tracks for Columbia at the time – and although we're not always huge fans of the "soloist in unfettered live setting" style of recording, we've gotta admit that we really love these tracks! Titles include "You've Changed", "It's You Or No One", "Antabus", "Backstairs/LTD", "The Panther", "Tangerine", "Gingerbread Boy", and "I Told You So". CD

Grachan Moncur IIIGrachan Moncur III – Mosaic Select (Evolution/Some Other Stuff/One Step Beyond/Destination Out/Hipnosis/Bout Soul) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $64.99 74.99
One of the most revolutionary players to ever handle a trombone – finally summed up in the full scope of his genius! Grachan Moncur III may not be as well-known a name as some of his more famous contemporaries – like Archie Shepp or Jackie McLean – but his mid 60s recordings were crucially important to modern jazz, not only that of Shepp and McLean, but the entire "new thing" generation! Moncur was one of the first players to realize that as much as the trombone was a musical instrument, it was also equally powerful as kind of a sonic engine – a way to craft dark and deep tones and colors, shading in an area of jazz that had previously been unexplored. And on top of Moncur's groundbreaking playing, he was also an equally skilled writer – and contributed his own compositions to a number of important 60s jazz sessions. This beautiful box set brings together more than a few of those sessions – Moncur's own lost Blue Note albums Evolution and Some Other Stuff, as well as Jackie McLean's seminal sides One Step Beyond, Destination Out, Hipnosis, and the bulk of 'Bout Soul. The set features 25 tracks in all – a wealth of lost modern jazz – all packaged in a 3CD slipcover, along with a booklet on the music. Great stuff – and long overdue! CD

Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $42.99
The complete Blue Note recordings of trumpeter Dizzy Reece – an amazing West Indian player who made some big waves on the London scene of the late 50s, then came to the US to cut a few key sides! Reece had an approach to the trumpet that shared some of the boldness of his US contemporaries on the hardbop scene, but which also occasionally had a few more exotic touches as well – not just in Dizzy's phrasing, but also in the way he liked to set up a tune – mixing modern and soulful modes together nicely, in a way that made him a perfect match for the Blue Note era that boasted work by Horace Silver and Art Blakey! The 3CD set features Dizzy's three Blue Note albums Blues In Trinity, Star Bright, and Soundin Off – plus material that was unissued at the time, but later appeared on the now-deleted Comin On CD – a real lost treasure of a session that has Dizzy stepping out even more strongly than before. Players include Hank Mobley, Tubby Hayes, Donald Byrd, Art Taylor, Walter Bishop Jr, Stanley Turrentine, Musa Kaleem, and Art Blakey – and titles include "Blues In Trinity", "Color Blind", "Shepherd's Serenade", "Groovesville", "The Rebound", "A Variation On Monk", "Blue Streak", "Ye Olde Blues", "Comin On", "Sands", "Goose Dance", "Achmet", and "The Case Of The Frightened Lover". Like so many of the harder-edged American rock groups of the time, these guys have moved completely past the blues that inspired their initial sounds – working out plenty of their own inflections on guitar and organ, at a level that's never slavish at all to the roots – and which instead really serves to provide the perfect polish for the nicely sinister vocals on the set! Titles include "Easy Street", "Sky Is Crying", "Watch That Cat", "Watching Can Waste Up The Time", "Yellow Dawg", "Satisfied", and "Let's Not Say Goodbye" – the prophetic last song on the record. CD

Philips/Mosaic, Mid 60s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
The complete Philips recordings of Woody Herman – a set that captures his ever-evolving big band at a very groovy point in their career! Although Herman's group first rose to fame in the 40s, they continued to always change things up to keep things fresh – and by the time of these 60s recordings, they'd hit a new sound and style that was really great – one that often seemed to have a bit more Basie bounce at the bottom, a really playful sense of hornplay, and some of the creative touches that always made Herman's band a great place for budding modernists. Most of this material has never been on CD before – and the albums sparkle with great contributions from players who include Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Sal Nistico and Bobby Jones on tenor, Nat Pierce on piano, Nick Brignola on baritone, and Herman himself on clarinet and alto. Woody sings a bit on some tracks as does Joe Carroll on one session – and the 3CD package features 44 tracks in all – the albums Woody Herman 1963, Woody Herman 1964, Encore, Woody's Big Band Goodies, and Swinging Herman Herd Recorded Live. Blue Note/Mosaic, 1967/1969/1970. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The last remaining treasures from Andrew Hill's legendary years at Blue Note Records – a 3CD collection of incredible work from the late 70s, most of which has never been issued before! 6 of the collection's 31 tracks once appeared on the short-lived One For One reissue in the mid 70s – but the other 25 tracks here are seeing their release for the first time ever – and represent a wealth of genius from pivotal and under-documented years of Hill's career. Recordings are from the years 1967, 1969, and 1970 – with players that include Pat Patrick on flute and saxes, Benny Maupin on flute & saxes, Ron Careter on bass, Robin Kenyatta on alto, Sam Rivers on flute and saxes, Nadi Quamar on thumb piano and percussion, and Teddy Robinson on drums – and Hill plays his usual piano throughout, but also hits the organ on a few of the set's really standout tracks! There's a depth here that goes beyond even most of what we know from Andrew – a sound that's modern, yet often quite soulful – poised nicely between the Passing Ships and Grass Roots years of his career. Titles include "The Dance", "Moma", "Chained", "Sis At The Top", "Fragments", "Illusion", "Yomo", "Prevue", "Now", "Oriba", "Wake", "For Blue People Only", "Without Malice", "Ocho Rios", "Monkash", and "Mother's Tale". Blue Note/Mosaic, Mid 70s. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of work from vibist Bobby Hutcherson – some of his most righteous recordings ever, spread out over the span of 5 albums recorded for Blue Note in the mid 70s – one of which was only ever issued in Japan! The work here has Bobby taking off nicely from his years with Harold Land – and although the set includes two albums with Land, the excellent Cirrus from 1974, and the Japanese-only Inner Glow, the remaining albums feature a range of different players – including Manny Boyd on soprano and tenor sax, George Cables on piano, Larry Nash on electric Piano, Hadley Caliman on reeds, and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. As with the better-known recordings with Land, the style here is flowing and open – an approach that starts in modal rhythms, and which moves into some of the more soaring, spacious modes shared by Bobby's contemporaries on the indie soul jazz scene – especially artists on labels like Black Jazz and Strata East. The albums here are all amazing – never too slick, and beautifully balanced, with a sense of focus that still makes Hutcherson one of the greatest vibists working at this point in his career. 3CD set features the albums Cirrus, Inner Glow, Waiting, The View From The Inside, and Knucklebean – featuring a whopping 30 tracks in all! ✨✧ Charles TolliverCharles Tolliver – Mosaic Select (Live At Slugs Vols 1 & 2/Live In Tokyo – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Strata East/Mosaic, 1970/1973. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive set of work from trumpeter Charles Tolliver – a 3CD package that contains seminal live work from Tolliver's Strata East years, plus bonus previously unreleased titles from the concerts! The first half of the collection features work from Tolliver's seminal Live At Slug's albums – both recorded on the same night in 1970, and done with a free-thinking, spiritually soaring energy that set a whole new tone for live jazz in the 70s! For the records, Tolliver fronts the classic Music Inc lineup – a group that includes Stanley Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Hopps on drums. Tolliver is stunning on trumpet – and he and Cowell handle the majority of the solos with the kind of imagination that characterized this strong point in both of their careers. Slugs titles include the previously unissued "On The Nile", "Ruthie's Heart", and "Repetition" – plus "Drought", "Felicite", "Orientale", and "Spanning". Next up is the equally great Live In Tokyo album – recorded 3 years later with a similar group that includes Cowell on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Clifford Barbaro on drums – and although Tolliver's trumpet solos are always a treat, the interplay between Houston's bass and Cowell's piano is enough reason to buy the record! The highlight of the album is a great take of Cowell's modal groover "Effi", but the set also contains some masterful compositions by Tolliver – long versions of "Truth", "Stretch", and "Drought". Previously unissued titles include "Our Second Father", "Impact", and "Earl's World". Complicated, spiritual work – even more so than some of Tolliver's studio sessions! CD

Mosaic, 1970/1975/1979. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Early and mid 70s big band masterpieces from Charles Tolliver for Strata East – plus a brilliant batch of German recordings from 1979 with Hamburg's great NDR group that was never legitimately issued before now – in an amazing 3CD set from Mosaic! Disc One features the classic Impact – the first album by his legendary group on Strata East – a core quartet that features Tolliver on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Hopps on drums and percussion – all augmented by some larger backings for the session! The core sound is amazing – with free lines that trade back and forth wonderfully, filled with life and a great lyrical sense of energy that Tolliver never had on some of his later sessions. The larger group hardly gets in the way at all – and they're mostly there just to shade in the background, but often drop out during the solos – giving full center stage exposure to Tolliver and Cowell! Tracks include "Ruthie's Heart", "Abscretions", "Household of Saud", and "On the Nile". Disc Two features Impact – an amazingly spiritual effort that really brings together the best strands of sounds running through the underground at the time! The format's a bit similar to Music Inc – with lots of strong lead action from Charles on trumpet, and Stanley Cowell on piano. But this time around, the larger group seems to be more fully integrated into the tunes – there not just to support the soloists, but to rise up with a full, proud sense of majesty that's really amazing. Other players include Cecil McBee and Reggie Workman on basses, Billy Parker and Warren Smith on percussion, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Owens on trumpets, John Gordon and Garnet Brown on trombones, and Charles McPherson, George Coleman, Harold Vick, and Charles Davis on saxes! Titles include great versions of the Tolliver classics "Plight" and "Impact" – plus "Mother Wit", "Lynnsome", and "Grand Max". Disc Three is a hidden gem from Tolliver's career – 1979 radio broadcast sessions with the NDR big band that includes Benny Bailey on trumpet, Herb Geller on alto, Wolfgang Dauner on piano, Lukas Lindholm on bass and Alvin Queen on drums. Here Tolliver plays some of the Strata material with these great European players who really seem to relish the opportunity – with each contributing brilliant solos. Includes "Ruthie's Heart", "Mother's Wit", Grand Max", "Impact" and more. CD

Seminal work from one of the hippest big bands of the 70s – the legendary ensemble led by pianist Toshiko Akioshi and reedman Lew Tabackin! The group marks a huge shift for Akiyoshi – a move away from the more bop-inflected small combo work of earlier years, into a rich new role as a composer and arranger – one who comes up with fantastic charts for the ensemble, filled with color, tone, and a great sense of swing! Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

Mosaic/Revelation, 1969/1971/1972/1979. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing collection of music – some of the hippest jazz to ever come out of the west coast scene, and a legendary pairing of trumpeter Bobby Bradford and saxophonist John Carter! Both players have really gone onto leave their mark in later years – but honestly, they almost reached the peak of their powers with these incredible early recordings – beautifully bracing modern jazz, of a sort that somewhat follows an Ornette Coleman lineage, but which also opens up into the new spirituality that was hitting the LA scene in the post-Coltrane years – almost a bridge between the Coleman/Dolphy generation, and the later Nimbus scene that would rise in the west! The music here is stark, simple, and quite organic – yet has an energy that's all its own – an amazing progression of rhythms and horn sounds, wrapped together beautifully through a killer set of original compositions. Carter plays alto, tenor, clarinet, and flute; Bradford is on trumpet, and rhythm players include Nate Morgan and Bill Henderson on piano, Henry Franklin and Louis Spears on bass, and Bruz Freeman and Leon Ndugu Chancler on drums. The set brings together material originally issued on the Seeking and Secrets albums for the Revelation label – but then also features lots more previously unreleased tracks – making the set more than 50% new material! Most titles are of the 1969/Early 70s vintage of the Revelation albums – but the set also features some beautiful 1979 duets between Carter and Bradford, with no other instrumentation at all. 22 tracks in all – and an instant treasure! A wealth of piano trio material from the west coast scene of the 50s and early 60s – tracks pulled not only from long-lost albums by pianists Russ Freeman, Richard Twardzik, Jimmy Rowles, and Clare Fischer – but also even more obscure recordings that only appeared on Pacific Jazz collections! The scope of the package is really tremendous – as it begins with some of the first Pacific Jazz trio sides by Russ Freeman and Richard Twardzik – both done during their years with Chet Baker – then runs through Jimmy Rowles' full album Rare But Well (recorded for Liberty in 1954), a variety of shorter trio sessions by Freeman and Rowles, and Clare Fischer's early trio sides – First Time Out (1962) and Surging Ahead (1963). And as always with Mosaic, the whole thing's incredibly well done – put together with tremendous care in both the mastering and notes, so that the whole thing's not just some happy accident in jazz. 51 tracks, 3CDs, and beautiful throughout! Some of the most important work ever recorded by Randy Weston – 5 early albums that really pushed the boundaries of modern jazz! First up on the set is Little Niles – a fantastic set that features some of Weston's best early compositions – angular and Monk-ish numbers, but with a profound influence from African rhythms. Next up is Live At The Five Spot – a really compelling live set that features Randy working out Little Niles-ish numbers with a live group that includes Kenny Dorham and Coleman Hawkins. After that is Piano A La Mode – a sublimely simple album of mellow piano tracks – followed by a series of previously unissued tracks done with a quartet that includes Roy Haynes, Cecil Payne, and Ron Carter. Following that are some of Randy's most Afro-centric albums – very unique for the time, and equally powerful today – the records Uhuru Afrika and Highlife – both of which feature larger groups working through some distinctly African ideas in jazz. ✨✧ Art BlakeyMosaic (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy Boy/Chrysalis, 2000. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Also includes "My Writes", "Thru Ya City", "All Good?", 'Words FromThe Chief Rocker" and the "Art Of Getting Jumped" – 17 tracks in all. LP, Vinyl record album

Strange twist for this series (which has been mostly lounge and funk), but a great batch of danceable uptempo fusion tracks and lost disco cuts from the euro club heyday of the 70s. Tracks include "Ma Mo Ah" by Tony Valor, "Follow Me" by Black Devil, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "Get On Up" by Roundtree, "Do Me" by Mona Rae, and "Ease Your Mind" by Touchdown. Nudie cover, sexy groove, and a nice 11 track comp of lost clubby grooves. Also with the great groover "Dance Dance Dance" by Marta Acuna! CD

Mosaic, Mid 1960s. Used ... $78.99
The start of a legend – a huge amount of material that introduced the world to the tenor genius of the young Joe Henderson – recorded over the space of a few short years, on records that feature Joe as both the leader and a sideman on some of the hippest Blue Note records of the time! Henderson was amazing right at the start – able to play a soulful hardbop lead at one moment, then slide into edgier modern territory the next – a quality that made him a key artist to work with some of the other strong Blue Note innovators of the period – as you'll hear in this overstuffed set! The set features a total of 47 gems – including some alternate takes – all wrapped up with the usual top-shelf Mosaic Records booklet of notes, photos, and other key details on the material. Includes the full albums Page One, Our Thing, In N Out, Mode For Joe, and Inner Urge – all recorded under the leadership of Joe Henderson – plus tracks from the albums Unity by Larry Young, The Kicker by Bobby Hutcherson, Little Johnny C by Johnny Coles, and Step Lightly by Blue Mitchell – and the full Kenny Dorham albums Una Mas and Trompeta Toccatta, both of which are essential in Henderson's career! Verve/Mosaic, 1950s. New Copy 10CD ... $139.99 169.00
A much-needed collection of the famous Jazz At The Philharmonic performances of the 1950s – work that follows up the initial postwar run from producer/presenter Norman Granz, which helped lay the groundwork for Verve Records – but which hasn't gotten the full exposure it deserves! Unlike the 40s sessions, there's a lot of material here that never made it to CD – including tracks from the multi-record box set releases that included JATP volumes 11, 15, 16, and 17 – plus the Jazz Concert #1 album, Jazz At The Hollywood Bowl, and various Opera House sessions – and even the Lester Young Carnegie Blues record, which appeared later on vinyl! Some unreleased tracks have been added to the set too – and as with Mosaic Records at its best, this is less a reissue package than a proper presentation of material that was scattered out there in various formats – finally presented in the right order, with detailed notes, and really great sound. Artists are the cream of the crop of Verve at the time – Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Herb Ellis, Buddy DeFranco, Sonny Stitt, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, and others – plus some non-Verve artist surprises as well! Very limited, and comes with a huge booklet of notes and performance details too. CD

Dial/Mosaic, Late 40s. Used 9CDs ... $149.99
Seminal sounds from one of the most important labels of the early bebop years – a tiny imprint based in LA, but one that played a big role on the New York scene as well! Dial Records is often best-remembered for documenting some key early material by Charlie Parker – but as you'll see in this set, the company had a wonderful ear for other artists too – and managed to record some incredible work during a relatively short span of time! The tracks here were all done in a span of less than four years – from mid 1945 through late 1948 – yet together, they represent a blueprint of bop that would last for years to come – material that has often come out in varied formats over the years, and finally gets its full, proper presentation here – in an overstuffed box that's in the best Mosaic Records tradition! The collection features individual sessions, laid out in chronological order – with full notes on each, and a presentation that tracks down obscure tracks from varied releases, then brings them together to represent the full creative output at each moment. The 9CD package features 185 tracks in all – on sessions led by Red Norvo, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Howard McGhee, Sonny Berman & Bill Harris, Dexter Gordon, Erroll Garner, Earl Coleman and Fats Navarro, Dodo Marmarosa, and the team of Wardell Grey and Dexter Gordon. ✨✧ Don ByasClassic Don Byas 1944 to 1946 (10CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Mid 1940s. New Copy 10CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The genius of Don Byas finally gets its due – served up here in a massive 10CD package that's overflowing with work from some of Byas' most fruitful years as a saxophonist! Byas is one of the sometimes-overlooked giants of his generation – a player with a tone and style that's every bit as distinct as that of Ben Webster and Lester Young. Yet for some reason, Byas has a much more checkered recording history – and one that sometimes doesn't really capture his strengths when he's completely on fire. That's definitely corrected here – as the package features some key recordings by Byas as a leader – then rolls into a stunning array of tenor performances in the groups of others – some originally issued on rare 78s, others never issued until this box – making the whole thing a mindblowing look at these seminal years in Don's career! The labels for some of the tracks include King, Manor, Jam, Savoy National, and HNS – and Byas blows as a leader in a few groups, and with other leaders who Hot Lips Page, Hank D'Amico, Cozy Cole, Earl Bostic, Joe Turner, Timmie Rogers, Oscar Pettiford, and Dizzy Gillespie – a really varied lot, which demonstrates the versatility that Byas could have as a performer. The box has 193 tracks in all, and a hugely detailed set of notes – a really ear-opening listen to this great tenorist! CD

Blue Note/Mosaic, Early 60s. Used 4CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although Grant Green has been getting a lot of attention lately for his heavy-duty funk work of the late 60s, it's the subtly beautiful work of the early 60's that first caught our attention years ago. From the start of his young career, Green was an amazing player who had developed a unique single-note approach to soloing that was positively riveting. And while his appearances on other Blue Note albums were filled with a heavy soul jazz sound that had Green playing next to organ and tenor, material like this gives you a perfect chance to hear how well he could swing a group on his own, with little other accompaniment than a tight rhythm section, and some soulful piano from Sonny Clark. None of this material was issued at the time. Includes material that appeared on the later albums Gooden's Corner, Oleo, Born To Be Blue, and Nigeria – plus tracks from The World Of Jazz Guitar, and Blue & Sentimental by Ike Quebec. CD

Pivotal work from trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – eleven full albums recorded by the young jazzman as a leader, together showing a really incredible scope of his talents in just a few short years in the studio! The Blue Note albums here already show an incredible evolution – from initial hardbop crackle at the best level of the label, to a slight shift into new thing territory that marks a more experimental side of Freddie's work that would take off later in the 60s. There's also two Impulse Records releases in the package – the completely sublime sextet outing of The Artistry Of Freddie Hubbard – a great date with Curtis Fuller on trombone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and John Gilmore on tenor – making a rare appearance in the studio away from the Sun Ra Arkestra! The other Impulse album is titled Body & Soul – and has Hubbard amidst a larger group of modernists on most tracks, with these incredible Wayne Shorter arrangements – then in a small group with shorter on tenor and Eric Dolphy on alto and flute. Blue Note albums include Breaking Point, Blue Spirits, Open Sesame, Going Up, Hub Cap, Ready For Freddie, Hub Tones, and Here To Stay – with players who include Tina Brooks, Jimmy Heath, and Wayne Shorter on tenors; McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, and Herbie Hancock on pianos; Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, and Reggie Workman on basses; and James Spaulding making a key early appearance on alto and flute. 70 long tracks in all – and a very detailed booklet of notes with rare photos! Incredible music from the great Bobby Hutcherson – a series of crucial 60s sessions for Blue Note that forever changed the way the vibes were heard in jazz! Bobby's work here is incredible – as he finds ways to create whole new sounds and shapes on his instrument – very different than both the softer sounds and romping percussive modes of previous generations – with a sense of dynamic expressiveness that matches the fantastic contributions of key sidemen here – including saxophonists James Spaulding, Joe Henderson, and Harold Land – the last of whom is heard here on a few key early collaborations with Hutcherson – which would enrich both of their careers. Other players include Grant Green on guitar, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Sam Rivers on flute and tenor, McCoy Tyner, Stanley Cowell, and Herbie Hancock on piano – plus the great Joe Chambers on drums – who was kind of a secret hero on so many of these sessions! Some of the albums here were so ahead of their time, Blue Note didn't issue them until many years later and the box set adds some unissued bonus tracks that were not on previous issues of some of the records too. The box features the full albums The Kicker, Dialogue, Components, Happenings, Stick Up, Oblique, Patterns, Total Eclipse, Spiral, Medina, and San Francisco – all fantastic. CD

Mosaic, 1964/1965. Used 7CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Key moments in the career of Charles Mingus – all recorded during the crucial years of 1964 and 1965, and featuring the first-time release of a fair bit of live material too! The set represents the first full presentation of recordings that have appeared piecemeal on a handful of obscure releases – self-released records from Mingus himself – Town Hall, My Favorite Quintet, and Music Written For Monterey – all really expanded here with the full recordings of the tracks, and unreleased titles provided from the original tapes! Mingus was really on fire during these years – severed from most of his bigger label associations, and freely working on some of his most inventive ideas with various smaller groups of players – all fresh young talents who were key interpreters of Charles' ideas – including Johnny Coles and Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, Jimmy Owens on trumpet and flugelhorn, Charles McPherson on alto sax, Clifford Jordan on tenor, Jaki Byard on piano, Eric Dolphy on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. The stalwart Dannie Richmond is on drums, and the sides represent some of Dolphy's last, and most important recordings on the planet – recordings done at Town Hall and in Amsterdam in April of 1964 – in addition to live material at Monterey in 1964 and 1965, in Minneapolis in May of 1965. Tracks are all quite long – some pushing the half-hour timing – and as with the best live Mingus, there's variations here that go way past any studio readings – really incredible solo flights that are still beautifully integrated with the ideas of the main group. Titles include "So Long Eric", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress Then Blue Silk", "Mingus Piano Solo", "Bird Preamble", "Themeless Blues", "Copa City Titty", "A Lonely Day In Selma", "Cocktails For Two", "Praying With Eric", "Parkeriana", "ATFW", "Meditations On A Pair Of Wire Cutters", and "Meditations On Integration". 7CDs, limited edition, and with a great book of notes too! Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of music from the great pianist Lennie Tristano – and maybe the first-ever set to truly get at the range of genius he could express on the piano! Given that Tristano only made a small amount of records during his too-short career, yet also left a major impact on the field of modern jazz – this set really documents the full span of everything that Tristano had to offer – pulled from a wonderful range of his own recordings, all of which appear here for the first time! These aren't casual solo recordings done in the basement – and instead, the package brings together a mixture of studio, live, and even television performances – all with a different spirit on each of the CDs in the set! One of the most revelatory is the final CD – which features a number of tracks in a "free session" in 1948 - with Tristano on piano, Lee Konitz on alto, Warne Marsh on tenor, and Billy Bauer on guitar – coming together with an amazing sound throughout. That same disc also features a superb 1962 live date at the Half Note – with Konitz on alto and Zoot Sims on tenor. CD1 is wonderful too – a selection of live material with the tremendous Billy Bauer on piano – a player, like Tristano, who was instrumental in shaping the sound of his instrument in modern jazz during the postwar years. CD3 features live performances by a sextet that includes Konitz, Marsh, and Bauer – plus Arnold Fishkin on bass and Jeff Morton on drums. CD2 features beautiful solo performances recorded from the early 50s through 1970. CD4 features trio session, most with Peter Ind on bass – while CD5 features different trio and duo material, but with Sonny Dallas on bass. The set is impeccably done – in cooperation with Tristano's family – and given the wealth of material, the whole thing may well have doubled his recording catalog in the process, while also really illuminating so many different aspects of his career! The first-ever session as a leader from British saxophonist Stan Sulzman – and a really beautiful record that fits in well with its placement on the Mosaic label from Graham Collier! Sulzman's got some angular tones that fit the style of the time – particularly in the way his British scene was cross-pollinating between jazz and progressive modes – and the set is equally noteworthy for the presence of the great John Taylor, who plays keyboards and even a bit of AMS synthesizer – really bringing this sense of warmth and depth to the music that's really wonderful! CTI/Mosaic, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great early CTI session by George Benson, and one of the most stripped-down, straight-ahead funky records he did for the label! There's a sharpness here that's different than the larger feel of some of Benson 's later records – a sound that almost links back to his soul jazz roots in the 60s – played by a tight combo that features Benson on guitar, Clarence Palmer on organ, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus percussion from Michael Cameron and Albert Nicholson. There's a version of "So What" on here that's got to be one of the best funky takes of that standard ever – with great hard grooves on the intro – and on other cuts, the real genius is in the way the simple tracks are arranged to shift between darkly chromatic passages and slight bits of funk. Titles include "All Clear", "Ode To A Kudu", and "Somewhere In The East". Plus, the CD features 3 bonus tracks – alternate versions of "Ode To A Kudu", "Somewhere In The East", and "All Clear". CD

In some way, Sonny Clark was the perfect figure to help Blue Note step into this generation – both a modernist and a soulful player, a strong group leader and an intimate soloist in a trio setting – clearly the lynchpin of the new energy during Blue Note's explosion in the LP generation – as you'll hear on classic albums that include Dial S For Sonny, Sonny's Crib, Sonny Clark Trio, Cool Struttin, Leapin & Lopin, Sonny Clark Quintets, Blues In The Night, My Conception, and the Art Of The Trio! Some of these albums were recorded in the late 50s, but only issued years later – and the package also includes all the bonus material that was added to later CD versions as well. Players include John Coltrane, Clifford Jordan, Charlie Rouse, and Hank Mobley on tenors – plus Art Farmer and Donald Byrd on trumpets, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Jackie McLean on alto, and Kenny Burrell on guitar – top-shelf Blue Note Groups on every record – and the set features 61 tracks in all, and the usual Mosaic booklet of notes! ✨✧ Paul DesmondComplete 1975 Toronto Recordings (7CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1975. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge amount of 70s material from the legendary Paul Desmond – all recorded during the year of 1975, with backing from a shifting group of Canadian players – and most of it unissued until now! You'll know some of these tracks from the albums Paul Desmond Quartet Live (A&M), Paul Desmond (Artist House), and Like Someone In Love (Telarc) – but together, the tracks present a much bigger picture of Desmond's genius at the time – really moving past some of the more rigid roles he'd have in his 60s work with Dave Brubeck. Players on most numbers are the trio of Ed Bickert on guitar, Don Thompson on bass, and Jerry Fuller on drums – a really great combo, and the mix of guitar with Desmond's sharply-blown alto is wonderful – a perfect upfront setting for his sound. A few more tracks feature trombonist Rob McDConnell in place of Bickert – which makes for a different, but equally compelling sound – and the whole thing features 51 long tracks, 32 of which appear here for the first time ever – all with the usual great Mosaic Records booklet of notes and presentation. ✨✧ Duke EllingtonNewport 1958 (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Mosaic, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Duke Ellington at Newport and in the studio – in a set of tracks recorded both live and away from the concert – but with a really unified feel overall! Duke's group here is in fine fine form – with key late 50s players who include Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet, and Cootie Williams, Clark Terry, and Cat Anderson on trumpets – plus a guest appearance by Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax! A few tunes stretch out nicely with that mix of complicated modernism and all-out swing that Duke was bringing to the table at the time – and although initially aimed at the popular festival crowd of the time, the album's got more than enough depth to please fans of his other 50s classics on Columbia. Titles include "Juniflip", "El Gato", "Just Scratchin The Surface", "Princes Blue", "Multicolored Blue", "Happy Reunion", and "Jazz Festival Jazz". CD features 4 bonus tracks not on the original album – including "Happy Reunion", "Mr Gentle & Mr Cool", "Jazz Festival Jazz", and "Feet Bone". CD

✨✧ Grant GreenComplete Blue Note Recordings Of Grant Green With Sonny Clark (5LP Box Set) ... LP
Blue Note/Mosaic, Early 60s. Near Mint- 5LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from pianist Art Hodes – tracks he recorded in the early years of Blue Note – with help from players who include Baby Dodds on drums, Sandy Williams and Ray Coniff on trombones, Rod Cless on clarinet, Bob Hggart on bass, and Max Kaminsky on trumpet! Hodes was a great player in the trad tradition, but he was also sharp enough to be reflecting on the music, too – finding ways to push it forward in the postwar years. The set features rare tracks from 78rpm singles and early 10" releases – plus a few unissued numbers too! CD

Columbia/Mosaic, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Key work by one of the most unique voices in 60s mainstream jazz – reedman Charles Lloyd, heard here on a set that's filled with amazing sounds, tones, and timings! The group here features Gabor Szabo on guitar – Lloyd's previous partner from the Chico Hamilton combo – plus Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – the latter two of whom have a great ear for the already-unusual sense of rhythm that Lloyd and Szabo picked up when working with Chico – and who also seem to bring in just a bit more "new thing" edge to the record. Lloyd plays both flute and tenor – the latter of which sounds sharper here than we remember – and titles include the cuts "Of Course, Of Course", "3rd Floor Richard", "Apex", "Goin' To Memphis", and "One For Joan". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Island Blues", "Sun Dance", and "East Of The Sun". CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardSuper Blue (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Mosaic, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sweet late 70s set from Freddie Hubbard – a slight move away from some of his highly-electric sides of the CTI years, yet one that still has some of the most soulful qualities of that work! Freddie's trumpet has a nicely spacious quality throughout – one that's flowing, and almost glowing at time – cascading along with qualities you might be more likely to hear from Art Farmer on some of the gentler numbers, yet really bursting out with that old Hubbard dynamism on the rest. Other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Hubert Laws on flute, Kenny Barron on piano and keyboards, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and George Benson also guests on guitar on one number too. A good number of the titles are originals, and tracks include "Super Blue", "To Her Ladyship", "Take It To The Ozone", "The Gospel Truth", and "Theme For Kareem". CD also features 3 bonus alternate takes! CD

John RenbournUnpentangled – The Sixties Albums (There You Go/John Renbourn/Bert & John/Another Monday/Watch The Stars/Sir John A Lot Of/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 6CD ... $30.99 50.99
A treasure trove of greatness from British folk rock legend John Renbourn – all of his late 60s solo work, done before moving on to greater fame in Pentangle! First up is There You Go – a rare one from singer Dorris Henderson and future Pentangle founder John Rensbourn! Florida born, LA raised singer Dorris Henderson moved to London in 1965 and was soon singing London's folk clubs, where she met Rensbourn. A solid mix of traditionals and then contemporary folk songs – stripped down and honest takes on "Saly Free And Easy", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Mr Tamborine Man", "Going To Memphis", Something Lonesome", "Mist On The Mountain" and more. This edition includes bonus tracks from a rare 45 – "Hangman" and "Leaves That Are Green". Next is the self-titled John Renbourn from 1965 – a set that would not only establish John's legacy for years to come, but also have a very strong impact upon the role of the guitar on the British scene too! The album's definitely in a mode that owes something to an American folk legacy – but it also really breaks from the past with unusual phrasings and colorings in Renbourn's guitar – certainly with an ear towards ancient English modes, but also at once very fresh and contemporary – a strong precursor to the waves of new acoustic talents that would flow from the UK a few years later, but maybe even more revolutionary – given that John's mostly just working here with his guitar and voice. Bert Jansch adds guitar to a few tracks – and titles include "Song", "Down On The Barge", "Plainsong", "Judy", "Beth's Blues", "Blue Bones", "Train Tune", "Winter Is Gone", and "Noah & Rabbit". Bert & John is a hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Another Monday is maybe the most obscure album in the collection – a set that is mostly instrumental, with some completely fantastic work by Renbourn on guitar – but which also features a bit of guest vocals from singer Jacqui McShee – whose warmer presence next to John really makes for a nice pairing. The album's as powerful as it is subtle, really beautiful in its sense of variety – with titles that include "Buffalo", "One For William", "Lost Lover Blues", "Another Monday", "Day At The Seaside", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", and "Waltz". Watch The Stars is another great collaboration with Dorris Henderson – an American singer, but one who moved to London in the 60s – where she cut this rare gem with guitarist John Renbourn! The album's got a righteous vibe that's hipper than the usual folk set – with some traditional tunes and some contemporary material – recorded with that amazing phrasing that made Renbourn's guitar so distinct right from the start, with lots of those jazzy currents we love so much – and which really fit the creative vocal approach of Henderson! Dorris also plays some autoharp, and there's a bit of bass in the backings – although overall the main focus here is on Renbourn's guitar and Henderson's vocals. Titles include "Come Up Horsey", "God Bless The Child", "Watch The Stars", "30 Days In Jail", "Mosaic Patterns", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", and "There's Anger In This Land". Sir John A Lot Of is perhaps one of the best-known albums from British guitar legend John Renbourn – as it was issued widely in the US, and kept in print for a surprisingly long time over the years! The approach here is slightly different than Renbourn's previous records – a bit in the image presented by the cover, although with maybe not as slavish a sound – as John just uses the whole thing to go a bit more ancient than before, in ways that echo the time travel that the whole British folk scene was taking as the 70s approached. The tunes are done in ways that are really beautiful – still lots of the incredible guitar work that made Renbourn such a standout on the scene – plus flute from jazzman Ray Warleigh, who's very different here than usual – and spare use of finger cymbals, African drums, and glockenspiel by Terry Cox. Titles include "Morgana", "Transfusion", "The Trees They Do Grow High", "Sweet Potato", "Seven Up", and "White Fishes". 6CD box features all records in original artwork sleeves, with a booklet of notes – and bonus tracks that include "Message To Pretty", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Lucky Thirteen", "Blues Run The Game", "The Wildest Pig In Captivity (alt)", "Can't Keep From Crying", "Transfusion (alt)", and "The Leaves Are Green".
