✨✧ Art BlakeyMosaic ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo New York pressing, with RVG stamp and ear. Back cover has some light wear, but this is a nice copy overall.)

✨✧ VariousMood Mosaic Vol 16 – Hipsoulover ... CD
Mood Mosaic (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest entries we've ever seen in this excellent series – a package that's heavy on rare funk tracks from overseas, most of which we're never likely to find on vinyl in our neck of the woods! There's a slinky, sexy groove to most of these cuts – very 70s, with plenty of sweet electric elements, and lots of keyboards too – and although the vocals are part of the sound, the strength of the cuts really lies in the instrumentation – especially on the longer numbers that really take off strongly! Titles include "Puutharassa" by Pekka Streng, "Ombilic Contact" by Atomic Crocus, "Erotica" by Agua Turbia, "Primitivo" by Hareton Salvanini, "September 13" by Deodato, "Dingo" by Olivier Despax, "Animal" by Farm, and "Psychastenie" by Serge Gainsbourg. Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 7CD ... $118.99 119.00
A stunning overview of these two key slices of work from Louis Armstrong – material recorded for RCA Records in the mid 40s, and then his huge Columbia Records comeback sides in the 50s – the latter of which is presented here with a huge amount of unissued material and alternate tracks! The RCA work starts out the set – 78rpm material that includes both larger groups and small combos – including his All Stars and Hot Seven groups, as well as a 1946 Esquire Award Winners session. Columbia material begins in 1954 – and returns to some key all-star groups with some of Louie's best sidemen of the decade – on sessions supervised by George Avakian and Teo Macero, each of whom bring out a different quality in Armstrong's talents. In addition to all the 78rpm singles and unissued tracks, the sessions also feature material that appeared on the records Louis Armstrong Plays WC Handy, Satch Plays Fats, The Real Ambassadors, Louis Armstrong Plays The Blues, and the unusual Book Of The Month Club album set of Rare & Unreleased performances. The set features a massive 141 tracks in all – and one of the biggest booklets of notes we've ever seen with a Mosaic set! CD

George BensonGood King Bad ... CD
CTI/Mosaic, 1975. Used ... $6.99
Sweet 70s funk from George Benson – an album that's a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still free from the commercial polish of his later hits! Maestro David Matthews is at the helm for this session – and most numbers have a full backing from players who include some of the best of the CTI/Kudi generation – including Ronnie Foster and Bobby Lyle on keyboards, Joe Farrell on flute, Fred Wesley on trombone, Eric Gale on rhythm guitar, Dave Friedman on vibes, and Steve Gadd on drums – who manages to kick in a nicely funky undercurrent, even on some of the mellower numbers. George's guitar is filled with warmly chromatic hues – gliding away nicely on titles that include the slow funky "Em", plus "Siberian Workout", "Shell Of A Man", "Hold On I'm Coming", "One Rock Don't Make No Boulder", and "Theme From Good King Bad". ✨✧ Art BlakeyThree Blind Mice Vol 2 ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual live set from the great Art Blakey – his only album for the United Artists label, but one that continues the tradition of the expanded group style he was starting to use at Blue Note! The lineup here is a sextet, one that's got even more power than the Jazz Messengers as a quintet – a group that bridges generations with older Messengers Wayne Shorter on tenor and Jymie Merritt on bass – alongside rising talents Curtis Fuller on trombone, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Cedar Walton on piano – the last of whom leaves a key mark on the group's sound, through his mix of soulful groove and lyrical inflections! There's maybe even more searing energy here than on the previous live Blue Note albums from Blakey. This second volume includes the cuts "Mosaic", "The Promised Land", "Arabia", and "Ping Pong" – all of which are some of the best tracks ever written for the group! CD

Graham CollierDown Another Road/Songs For My Father/Mosaics ... CD
Fontana/Philips/BGO (UK), 1969/1970/1971. New Copy 2CD ... $11.99 19.99
3 incredible albums from the British jazz scene at the end of the 60s – all together in one 2CD package! Down Another Road is incredible work from one of England's greatest jazz talents – bassist Graham Collier, a player with an amazing ability to absorb a lot of the modern and progressive influences of his jazz generation – but all without succumbing to the same indulgences as them – a fact which resulted in a razor-sharp style that forged some of the freshest jazz ever to come out of the UK. This 1969 album is a masterpiece – filled with a modal groove and a strident searching theme, yet also as tight and grooving as most of the best Blue Note sessions from the same time. Harry Beckett's on trumpet, Nick Evans is on trombone, John Marshall plays drums, and Stan Sulzmann handles the reeds. Tracks include "Down Another Road", "Danish Blue", "The Barley Mow", and "Aberdeen Angus". Songs For My Father is a masterpiece of modernist soul jazz, with a sound that recalls the best late Blue Note work by Lee Morgan or Hank Mobley. Alan Wakeman's tenor is perfectly pitched, and searingly searching; Harry Beckett's trumpet is round, lyrical, and filled with soul; and the piano of John Taylor comps along in chunky modal grooves that make the whole album fall together brilliantly. Tracks include "Song One", "Song Two", "Song Three", etc – and they're all fantastic! Mosaics is a wonderfully searching session – filled with warm McCoy Tyner-esque modal moments, and searing post-Coltrane solos! The album comprises one long piece – Collier's "Mosaics" – performed live by a group that includes Alan Wakeman on tenor and soprano, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and Geoff Castle on piano. "Mosaics" has that amazing mid 60s Coltrane quality of going out in a spiritual kind of way – yet always returning to the groove, never getting too free, and always remaining firmly focused on the direction ahead. All players are great, and the record crackles with the intensity of a classic session on Impulse! CD

Third Ear BandMosaics – The Albums 1969 to 1972 (Alchemy/Third Ear Band/Music From Macbeth) (3CD set) ... CD
Harvest/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
A trio of important albums from this very unique group – brought together here in a single package! First up is Alchemy – the amazing first album from Third Ear Band – a set that's maybe even more distinct than some of their later, better-known recordings! These guys emerged in the British scene at the end of the 60s – but they're not really psych, or prog – and although they have a love of ancient sounds, they're also not in any of the territory that was being explored by acid folk groups of the time! Instead, they've got this wonderful all-acoustic blend of reeds, stringed instruments, and percussion – all with a feel that seems to link together centuries with its own organic energy, but which also gives a bit of a nod to freer jazz elements of the time. At points, these guys almost sound like a looser, more-jamming version of Penguin Cafe Orchestra – but that's only part of the approach – as things are very unique throughout, in a blend of tablas, hand drums, oboe, recorder, viola, violin, cello, and slide pipes – served up on titles that include "Druid One", "Lark Rise", "Ghetto Raga" and "Stone Circle". Next is the self-titled Third Ear Band record – key material from one of the most unique groups of the early prog years – as they dropped the electricity of most of their contemporaries, and instead serve up their sounds in a blend of oboe, violin, cello, and percussion – all with really amazing results! There's currents of free jazz in the music at times – especially on the Leroy Jenkins-like violin – but the percussion also grounds the music nicely – and really keeps the whole group tied to the planet with an organic, almost timeless current – a good thing too, as the titles are all based on the elements – "Air", "Earth", "Fire", and "Water". Last up is their very unique Music From Macbeth – an imagined soundtrack handled in a wonderful way –Shakespeare never sounded so compelling before – given a very cool soundtrack by the Third Ear Band, who were moved to work on this project in collaboration with director Roman Polanski! The music is fantastic away from the film – very different than some of the group's earlier records, and a lot more eerie too – as some of their usual string and reed elements almost take on an electronic vibe in the process! Most tracks are very spacious and open, with the violin and oboe crafting some especially sharp, angular sounds – almost as if the group were let loose in some sort of analogue electronic studio. Titles include "The Beach", "The Banquet", "Dagger & Death", "Bear Baiting", "Groom's Dance", "Prophetics", and "Wicca Way". CD

Perez PradoHavana 3 AM ... CD
RCA, 1956. Used ... $6.99
A real Latin standard of the 50s – packaged with a title and a cover that perfectly evoke the lure of pre-Castro Cuba at its best – and played by Perez Prado with a style that's more open and flowing than some of his earlier singles! The album's got a really unified feel overall – still in that "ugh" groove that was Prado's trademark in the 50s, but coming across with more complicated horn parts and a number of key moments that offer sparer percussion outings in a really evocative way. There's a great "loud then soft then loud again" feel to the record that gives it tremendous dynamic range – and titles include "The Freeway Mambo", "Bacoa", "Peanut Vendor", "La Comparsa", "Granada", and "Mosaico Cubano".
