MomentsMoment With The Moments ... LP
Stang, Early 70s. Very Good ... $19.99
Sweet sweet sweet soul from The Moments, and one of their rare early albums for the Stang label! The tracks are all beautiful New Jersey harmony soul, of the sort that The Moments and others put on the charts in a large way during the early 70s – and the band's smoothing their act up a bit, but still has some of the roughness that makes the best New Jersey soul albums so compelling! Of course, Sylvia Robinson probably had something to do with that – as she was still just hitting her stride in the studio – finding a great way to present the group with all the fragility of their earliest years, but also a bit more punch than usual. Titles include their hit "Love On A Two Way Street", a surprisingly great cover of "Rocky Raccoon", and other nice ones like "So This Is Our Goodbye", "I Do", "Key To My Happiness", and "Lovely Way She Loves". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has some aging, small seam splits, and some heavy wear with splitting in the spine.)

Verve, 1961. Sealed Gatefold ... $28.99
An overlooked treat recorded at a time when Verve was briefly exploring the jazz orchestra format in the early 60s – through recordings by Stan Getz, Jimmy Guiffre, and here, Bob Brookmeyer. The record features a set of tracks written and/or arranged by Brookmeyer, with help from contemporaries like Eddie Sauter, Ralph Burns, and Gary McFarland – all of whom were doing similar work for Verve at the time. Players are strong all around – and include Hank Jones, Eddie Costa, Gene Quill, Phil Woods, Nick Travis, Al Cohn, and Phil Bodner – and titles include "Some Of My Best Friends", "Gloomy Sunday", "Where Oh Where", "Days Gone By Oh My", and "Ho Hum". A really cool limited single – with two contemporary vocal jazz gems! Kurt Elling takes on the groovy tune "Stepping Out" by Joe Jackson – really unlocking the jazzy core of the song, almost as anthem for the New York that Elling now calls home – and Mark Murphy handles the classic "Stolen Moments" – a cut he's done a few times, but which is presented here from his great Verve album with Til Bronner at the production helm! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Max RoachComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint/Soul Note (Birth Rebirth/Collage/Survivors/Historic Concerts/Bright Moments) (6CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 6CD ... $32.99 45.98
Really wonderful work from drummer Max Roach – a set of classic albums for the Black Saint/Soul Note labels – most of which mark an especially creative stretch in his career! The set's got some great avant moments – the brilliant Birth & Rebirth, which pairs the drums of Roach with the reeds of Anthony Braxton – at a level that's quite free, but quite spiritual too! Max also steps outside on Historic Concerts – a 2CD set of performances with pianist Cecil Taylor – a meeting that's got to be heard to be believed, as Roach almost outdoes Cecil for non-stop creative energy! Collage features the M'Boom percussion ensemble – a great group that Max was fronting at the time, and which also features percussionists and drummers Freddie Waits, Ray Mantilla, Roy Brooks, Joe Chambers, Warren Smith, and Eddie Allen – a hell of a lineup who creatively mix rhythm and melody. Survivors is a bit more subtle, but quite soulful too – a set that has Max Roach handling a fair bit of percussion, and working with a hip string quartet too! Last up is Bright Moments – one of a few 80s efforts to feature Roach's Double Quartet – a group that takes his regular four-piece jazz group and augments it with a string quartet – all in a sound that's almost an extension of modes first begun by Roland Kirk in the 60s! The Kirk reference isn't accidental – as the title track here is a great version of Kirk's "Bright Moments" – one that uses the strings to offset the core jazz work of Roach on drums, Odeon Pope on tenor, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, and Tyrone Brown on electric bass – all in ways that are as creative as they are playful, definitely in a Kirk-styled spirit. Other tunes follow suit – and use the strings to echo Kirk's dream of a black classical music, but also one that's always firmly jazz-based at all times. Titles include "Double Delight", "Hi Fly", "Bright Moments", "Elixir Suite", and "A Tribute To Duke & Mingus". CD

Lucky ThompsonLucky Moments ... CD
Ocium (Spain), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... $9.99
A great selection of "moments" from the early years of Lucky Thompson's career – tracks that capture the tenor giant at his best, working in a swing-based mode early on, but opening up to many new ideas as the CD progresses. Tracks are listed chronologically – and start with a 1945 date with Basie for Colubmia, moving into a Duke 78 with Freddie Green & The Kansas City 7, then into a series of tracks recorded under Lucky's own leadership – for the Excelsior label (1945), the Down Beat label (1946), Victor (1947), Triumph (1950), and Decca (1953/54). The set really moves past the over-collected Thompson moments, and brings to light a great amount of 78rpm material – all packaged very nicely, and with a good set of notes! 25 tracks in all, with titles that include "Avenue C", "Stay In There", "Boppin The Blues", "Boulevard Bounce", "Commercial Eyes", "Bunny", "Little Boy Blow", "The Scene Is Clean", "Schuffle That Ruff", and "Slam's Mishap". Armando TrovajoliMagic Moments At La Capannina ... LP
RCA (Italy), 1958. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Magic Moments indeed – a beautiful pre-soundtrack jazz session from Italian pianist Armando Trovajoli, done with a style that's really incredible! The backings have lush strings, bits of harpsichord, and some slight vocals from Miranda Martino – all blended together beautifully, then used as a backdrop for Trovajoli's well-struck notes on acoustic piano! The mode is slightly similar to American easy albums of the late 50s, but also has many echoes of the film scoring genius to come from Trovajoli – especially in the way conventional instrumentation is layered differently – often with a good sense of isolation of sounds in the studio. The vocals are very subdued in the mix – really more a quiet instrument amidst the strings – and titles include "On The Street Where You Live", "Canadian Sunset", "Close To You", "Lisboa Antiqua", "Diana", "Come Prima", and "Kiss Me Miss Me". ✨✧ Idle HandsSolid Moments ... CD
Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's nothing idle about these hands – as the group have a tightness that makes you think they've been together for years – which is maybe partly the case, as many of the artists are part of the great and ever-growing legacy of the Posi-Tone label! And while the company has given us great albums with single artists in the lead over the years, they've maybe been hitting even more strongly of late with groups of this nature – almost an all-leader effort, but in which all players come together with great sympathy for each other – in a lineup that features Will Bernard on guitar, Behn Gillece on vibes, Sam Dillon on tenor sax, Art Hirahara on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Donald Edwards drums. The album's overflowing with fresh, original material – and titles include "Barreling Through", "Silver Bullet", "Maxwell Street", "Ashes", "Sock's House", "Motion", and "Event Horizon " – plus nice takes of Stevie Wonder's "You And I" and Freddie Hubbard's "Theme For Kareem". Funky samba soul from the Brazilian scene of the early 80s – a record that's drunk deep on all the best elements of Jorge Ben and his generation, then comes up with a groove that's even more soulful and groovy! The instrumentation has some occasional jazzy touches – the sorts of flourishes we love in Banda Black Rio – but the vocals are much more in the lead, and are served up by the completely charming Serginho Meriti – one of those Brazilian singers who grabs you right away, even if you can't understand his language – as there's a universal sense of soul that really makes the whole thing very appealing! The set's relatively short, but packed with great cuts – and titles include "Bons Momentos", "Malandro Velho", "Serjane", "Tipo Help", "Mona Lisa", "Batalha Maravilhosa", and "Madureira E Dai". ✨✧ McCoy TynerTender Moments (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredibly strong set by McCoy Tyner – one of his best late 60s sides for Blue Note – and a record that really hints at the majesty he'd attain on record in the 70s! The album features Tyner's piano at the head of a large group that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Bennie Maupin on tenor, and James Spaulding on alto and flute – very hip players who help McCoy forge the early steps in the spiritual ensemble mode that would become his greatest contribution to jazz in the immediate post-Coltrane years. Tyner's writing is out front here, and he's laid out some great charts for the group to groove upon – hitting a spiritual vibe that's very much in the mode of music to come on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz in the 70s! The set includes Tyner's classic "Man From Tanganyika", plus "Mode To John" and "The High Priest". LP, Vinyl record album

Muhal Richard AbramsBlues Forever ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1981. Used ... $9.99
Hardly the blues that you might expect from the title – although knowing Muhal Richard Abrams, there's no doubt some sort of blues influence lurking in the background of his complicated orchestrations for the date! The album's a suite of original compositions by Abrams – all numbers played by a largeish group with lots of wonderful horn patterns – complexly woven together with lots of shifting shapes and tones, then sometimes breaking out in bold, free moments of improvisation! It's records like these that show why Abrams was one of the leading lights of the AACM by the early 80s – as much an important composer as a musician – equally skilled at both levels, and very sensitive to the strengths of the players he chose to work with. Muhal plays piano here – and other group members include Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, Wallace Laroy McMillan on baritone and flute, Jimmy Vass on alto and flute, Eugene Ghee on tenor and clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Jean-Paul Bourelly on guitar, Michael Logan on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Titles include "Cluster For Many Worlds", "Quartet To Quartet", "Ancient & Future Reflections", "Du King", "Chambea", and "Duet For One World". CD

Reel To Real, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Sticks", "Big P", "The Girl Next Door", "Back Home Blues", "Hippodelphia", "74 Miles Away", "Morning Of The Carnival", and Somewhere". CD

The vibe is more like the best 60s war dramas than you'd guess from the date – orchestrations that mix together bold passages of action with some more subtle dramatic moments – woodwinds and strings used by Addison with effortless ease, and often some nicely dark touches lurking in the deep backgrounds! Titles include "Human Roadblock", "Nijmegen Bridge", "Underground Resistance", "Before The Holocaust", "A Dutch Rhapsody", and "March Of The Paratroopers". 2CD edition – the original soundtrack album, plus a huge amount of bonus tracks – 35 more numbers from the original film recordings, wrapped up with very detailed notes as well! Hard-ripping genius from Agent Orange – one of the group's first moments on wax, and arguably one of their greatest, too! Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. One of those wonderful Monty Alexander albums from the 70s – recorded for the MPS label, and with a very different vibe than some of his later albums in the US! There's a warmth, flow, and soul here that comes through instantly – a way of fitting the piano right in with the rhythms, so that the tunes have this gentle glow and inherent warmth that really makes them sparkle! Part of the energy comes from the rhythm section – a trio that features Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Kenny Clare on drums – and Weber's bass work is especially good, and there's lots of nice round funky moments in some of the best tracks. The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. A stellar set from one of the most underrated reed players of all time – a brilliant bit of searching soul jazz, cut at a time when Curtis Amy was leaving behind his Texas roots for the new sounds of the Coltrane generation! The album's quite different than the organ and tenor dates that Amy had previously cut with Paul Bryant – and instead, is put together with a nascent spiritualism that's really wonderful – a sound that definitely lives up to the bold title and cover image, with lots of modal moments in the rhythms! The group features some equally under-acknowledged geniuses – including trumpeter Dupree Bolton, pianist Jack Wilson, and guitarist Ray Crawford – all coming together perfectly with Amy's work on tenor and soprano sax. The best tunes here are originals by the group members – including "Lonely Woman" (not by Ornette), "Katanga", "Native Land", and "Amyable". LP, Vinyl record album

Plus, the keyboards feel like some off-tuned electric piano – hard to say what, exactly – which makes for a nicely sinister vibe, even when things are groovy. Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Freedom/ORG, 1969/1974. New Copy ... $22.99 24.98
Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. Titles include "Tutankhamun", "The Ninth Room" and "Tthinitthedalen". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredibly wonderful record from The Art of Noise – their first full LP, following the ep Into Battle With – and a much more open-ended array of beats, sounds, and that wonderful chunky Trevor Horn production! The album's got versions of some of the older singles – like "Beat Box (Diversion One)" and "Close To The Edit" – but it's more packaged around airier numbers, like the sublime "Moments In Love", the slow chugging churning funk track that's forever been a favorite of ours! Other tunes include "How To Kill", "Who's Afraid", "Snapshot", and "A Time For Fear". (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, July 17. Ashbury Stabbins Duo (Roy Ashbury/Larry Stabbins)Fire Without Bricks ... CD
Bead/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Titles include "Puff", "Formants Of The Deep", "Wych Elm", "Fire Without Bricks", "Rough Cut", and "Maldoror". CD

Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". Tenorist Rodrigo Amado gets plenty of open space to really show off his creative tones and textures here – improvising freely in a trio that also features Goncalo Almeida on bass and Onno Govaert on drums! We've heard Amado before, but somehow he really grabs us here – partly because he's got this way of hitting soulful currents before going farther out – grounding his freer, looser moments in some more organic energy – which really keeps things interesting on the three longer tracks on the set. There's a few tinnier keyboards here than a decade ago, but there's plenty of great mellow moments too – and overall, Austin's still quite far from some of the too-commercial soul of contemporaries who were trying to cash in on her act. Dave Grusin produced, and titles include "In My Life", "Too Soon To Know", "Through The Test Of Time", "Good In Love", "Wait For Me", "First Time Love", and "In My Dream". David AxelrodSong Of Innocence ... CD
Capitol/Now Again, 1968. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
One of a handful of amazing albums recorded by David Axelrod towards the end of the 60s – really stunning, genre-breaking music that was years ahead of its time – and which has only finally been getting its due in more recent decades! At the time of the record, Axelrod was a house producer at Capitol Records – where he'd created big hits for Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley – and he'd also been experimenting a bit with studio techniques for other rock groups. But here, the Axe brings all his experience into play – then sends things soaring to the skies – with music based on the work of poet William Blake, but delivered in this totally groovy west coast 60s mode. The core of the instrumentation features funky drums from Earl Palmer and bass from Carole Kaye – both of whom really keep things rock-solid amidst the larger mix of strings and instruments directed by the great Don Randi – who himself is pretty darn wonderful too. The music has nice snatches of fuzz and organ throughout – jazzy moments, funky passages, and lots more too – served up on tunes that include much-sampled song "Holy Thursday" – plus "The Smile", "A Dream", "Song Of Innocence", and "The Mental Traveler". William Blake never sounded so funky! CD

Columbia/FTG, 1984. Used ... $6.99
Roy Ayers in a seductive mid 80s mode – his first for Columbia – and a record with some incredibly nice moments that blow away most of his contemporaries! The synth soul and drum machine era might seem like an odd fit for Roy's jazzy vibes, but it actually works really well here! You could argue that few players with a such profound jazz funk pedigree could pull off an 80s modern sound so succussfully – and we'd argue that Roy Ayers is indeed one of the few! If synths and programmed drums aren't your thing, this record is actually more heavily-weighted with laidback jazzy soul, with plenty of vibes and the usual warm sexy vocals from Roy. Includes the funky classic "Poo Poo La La", which has a great little monologue in it – plus "I Can't Help It", "Compadre", "Sexy, Sexy, Sexy", and "Love Is In The Feel". One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. A wonderful early soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – much jazzier than some of his later work, with a vibe that's right up there with some of the more jazz-based work of the Italian scene in the earlier part of the 60s! There's a cool wordless vocal from Nora Orlandi on a few tracks, and nice use of flute, piano, and percussion throughout – varied nicely, but with a really strong song-based sort of approach – so that the album's not entirely jazz in structure, but not far off either! Bacalov's always been great at more dramatic moments, but it's great to hear him working in a style like this – and there's a nice sense of variety on the record, which really keeps things interesting – especially as a few more guitar-based numbers move in to the mix. The sound gets a bit more tense at the end, but is still nice and spare – and titles include "La Strega In Amore", "Aura", "Due Donna Un Enigma", "Seduzione Diabolica", "Danza Greca", "Bruciata Viva", and "Consuleo". A seminal album from The Bad Brains – and a set that forever shaped the sound of hardcore in the 80s! These guys are incredibly tight throughout – no doubt because of some previous work in jazz – but they never get overindulgent or too jammy at all – and instead deliver this blinding, blistering version of hardcore that really blows away some of the lesser-trained groups in the underground at the time – full of fire and fierce determination, with a force that's still being felt all these many years later! And despite their rasta roots, there's hardly any reggae-styled moments here – really just a few tracks amidst the triple-time numbers – and probably less than you'd find on an early 80s Clash album! Titles include "Banned In DC", "Sailin' On", "At The Movies", "Right Brigade", "Supertouch", "FVK", "Coptic times", "How Low Can A Punk Get", and "Big Takeover" – and oddly, the whole thing was produced by Ric Ocasek too! There's a bit of a Jorge Ben influence going on at times – particularly in the way the record uses quickly-strummed acoustic guitar next to the earthy rhythms – but the overall sound is also a bit more fragile at times, and rougher around the edges, especially at its most expressive moments. Side one features an extended track titled "Hermit Thrush/Vat Of Oil" – really building up nicely at first with open, almost rambling work on the drum kit – matched with saxophone work from Baldi that slowly builds, still in soulful spiritual territory for the most part – occasionally hitting some wilder, raspier moments – almost in an Arthur Doyle sort of way. No side-stepping these grooves – as they're right, tight, and very much on the money – work that shows a real evolution in the sound of The Bamboos, and one that takes them strongly into deep soul territory! These guys have always had a great ear for classic funk, but this time around they're also throwing some classic southern soul into the mix as well – bringing in great influences from 60s Memphis and Muscle Shoals, all performed at a level that we hardly would have expected from their earlier releases! There's a totally tight, totally focused sound to the work – and the album feels like some lost nugget that might have been recorded at the Fame Studios a few decades back, save for a few modern funk moments that kick up the beats just a bit more. One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Three tracks differ slightly from this approach – the seven minute long fuzzy freakout "Electronic Dance", which is totally great in its own sort of way – the experimental echoey "Professional Crumble" – and the vocal number "Los Angeles", kind of a hippy dippy tune. A great little James Bond soundtrack – written for one of the lesser-remembered Bond films, but filled with nice moments! There's a darker, moodier feel here than on some of Barry's other Bond scores – lots of stretched out tracks that have a bit more space than usual, and odd instruments punctuating the themes with an eerie, other-worldly edge that almost reminds us of some of the best Italian thriller work from the time. Nancy Sinatra sings a very moody title track – and other tunes include "Takana's World", "The Wedding", "Mountains & Sunsets", "A Drop In The Ocean", "Bond Averts World War Three", and "The Death Of Aki". Robbie BashoSongs Of The Great Mystery – The Lost Vanguard Sessions (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Vanguard/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $38.99 39.99
A never-issued album from the guitar genius Robbie Basho – material recorded at the same Vanguard Records sessions that produced his monumental albums Voice Of The Eagle and Zarthus, and every bit as great as the work that appeared on those records – and as the tracks on Basho's Takoma Records albums from the 60s! The set features Robbie doing a bit of his unusual vocalizations, but in a way that's folded in very strongly with his unusual phrasings on acoustic guitar – although with Basho maybe hitting a more familiar folk style at some moments, even though the lyrics are all his own, and have a mystical quality that really matches his work on guitar. There's a really haunting quality to the whole record, and the vocal tunes could easily have Basho right up there with left-field contemporaries, like Fred Neil on Capitol, or Tim Hardin on his early Columbia years – but, mixed with the longform guitar explorations, create a vibe that's completely Robbie's own. Titles include "A Day In The Life Of Lemuria", which is an unusual piano/whistling tune – plus "The Butterfly Of Wonder", "Thunder Sun", "Song Of The Great Mystery", "Thunder Love", "Death Song", "Night Way", and "Katerei Tekakwitha". Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". Grand Royal/Universal, 1996/1998. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.98
The Beasties' peak-era, retro-style instrumentals LP! Even at their weakest vocal moments, we've always dug the Beastie Boys' firm commitment to funky instrumental backing – their albums are filled with lots of nice interludes, instrumentals, and backing grooves – but they often seemed to get buried amidst all the bugged out vocals. The record kind of has the vibe of a lost jazz organ session, with lots of weird twists and turns thrown in, and all the better thanks to Money Mark, pretty much a 4th Beastie here! A cool bit of instrumental funk with a very classic production feel. Every track's a winner, and the titles include "Ricky's Theme", "Groove Holmes", "Sabrosa", "In 3's", "Transitions", "Bobo On the Corner", and "Shambala". LP, Vinyl record album

Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Polly BergenAll Alone By The Telephone ... LP
Columbia, 1958. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A bittersweet set of vocals from Polly Bergen – recorded with a sound that really fits her sad-eyed look on the cover! Although Bergen's voice is sometimes confident and full, it's nicely restrained here – often somewhat dark-toned and moody – in ways that remind us of Morgana King, especially in the way that Polly holds back at just the right moments – keeping things mature by never getting too overly emotive. There's a nice sense of depth to the record that goes way beyond simple pop singing – and Luther Henderson's arrangements further help color the sound of the set – by giving it a sense of unity that almost reminds us of some of Sinatra's best blue-toned late 50s albums for Capitol. Purple Pyramid, Late 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $18.99 19.98
A great package – one that features some wildly experimental work from French electronics whiz Philippe Besombes! First up is the album Libra – tripped out electronics meet progressive rock jamming – all in a weird and wonderful film score from the early 70s! The record's one of the best by French experimentalist Philippe Besombes from the time – and it's got a style that sort of starts in the territory of Francois De Roubaix similar electronic work for film – but gets a lot darker and noisier right away! There's a textural depth here that's really great – almost a pre-industrial music exploration of sounds – but the work's also not that over-indulgent, either – and Besombes always has a great way of getting back to a tune, especially on the shorter tracks. Titles include "La Plage", "Rugby", "Ceremonie", "Hache 06", "La Ville", "Les Cosmonautes", "Tis A Song", "Boogimmick", and "PJF 261". Next is the record Esombeso – also release as Ceci Est Cela – a strange mix of sound library electronics and much more experimental work from Philippe Besombes – a set that carries echoes of some of the best Italian soundtrack electronics of the 70s, but which also features much darker, more turgid moments as well! The album collects some of Besombes' performances for ballet and other settings – and stands as an even starker document of his talents than some of the other albums issued under his name in the 70s. Titles include "Pawa"," Geant", "Seul", and "Ceci Est Cela". Next are two more albums done under the name Hydravion – both of which show Besombes turning his electronics into tighter, more song-based territory – although not without some noise from time to time – shorter tracks that sometimes get a bit tuneful, but which are still light years from mainstream music of the period. CD set also features bonus tracks for the first two albums – 8 more numbers that include "L'Or Des Fous", "Traversee", "Trio", "Piano Prepare", "Orgue Hache", and "Chocolate Cream". CD

CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $39.99
Four rare soundtracks from Italian composer Franco Bixio – appearing here on CD for the first time ever! First up is Deserto Di Fuoco – a score that begins with a dreamy wordless vocal theme, but then quickly moves into tenser moments – a kind of low-end, brooding approach to the music which is occasionally cut with some sweeter strings, yet still in a way that preserves the moody vibe of the other cuts! There's one "momento sexy" in the mix, but most of the tunes stay in this formation – kind of a mix of drama with slight currents of Italian warmth. Instantanea Per Un Delitto is a standout score right from the start – especially since the whole thing begins with a tune titled "I Want To Die" – a vocal number that's followed by a fair bit of other vocal tunes too – rockish numbers that almost feel like they were lifted from some Mike Curb/AIP soundtrack in the US – with titles that include "Back To My Baby", "My Sleeping Lady", "Pro9mise", "A Trip Around The World", and "Woman Pig". The soundtrack Diario Segreto Un Carcere Femminile follows – a mix of shorter tunes and warmer themes – sometimes in a lightly erotic mode, but also balanced with a bit of action too – and nice use of spare guitar and piano to evoke some nicely moody moments. There's a few tunes with fuller woodwinds and strings – a nice touch, and much more sensitive than usual for Bixio! Last up is the score for Il Tuo Piacere E'Il Mio – music that's filled with all sorts of weird touches – from spare recorder or harpsichord lines, to some offbeat churchy vocals – used on short tunes that end up with a pretty spooky vibe overall! The 2CD set features 63 tracks in all – done in the great quality we've really come to appreciate from the Quartet label. CD

2 incredible albums from The Blackbyrds – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Blackbyrds record – a funky jazz treasure, and the band's landmark first album! The Blackbyrds were a legendary 70s combo that were discovered by Donald Byrd while he was teaching at Howard University – and they had a tight style that mixed raw funk influences with smoother jazz playing, creating a sound that was different from many of their contemporaries, and which pushed funk and soul into a whole new level. Byrd's work with the band was as groundbreaking as Larry Mizell's work on his own Blue Note albums – and coincidentally, Larry Mizzell's Sky High Productions handles the studio chores for the set – but in a way that's much more sharply funky than his albums with Byrd! Titles include the tight choppy funk tracks "Do It, Fluid" and "Funky Junkie", plus other nice groovers like "Summer Love", "Gut Level", and "The Runaway". Flying Start has a beautifully put-together feel – tight enough to crossover somewhat big with a larger audience than the group's previous effort – but still filled with the kind of righteous energy that first got them going, a sublime mix of jazzy rhythms and soulful elements, all held together tightly by production from Donald Byrd. Tracks include the big hit "Walking In Rhythm", which was an oft-spun 45 back in the day – plus some great funk moments, like the tasty "Spaced Out", the choppy "The Baby", and the captivating "Blackbyrds Theme". Other cuts include "Future Children Future Hopes", "I Need You", and "April Showers". CD

Mindblowing early work from pianist Paul Bley – two side-long tracks that really show the pianist stretching out and expanding his mind – quite far from even his few modern moments on record in years before! The group here is very well-suited to the spirit of the set – Mark Levinson on warmly rounded bass, and Barry Altschul on some freer, bolder drums – balanced with the freer lines on Bley's piano, but at a level that really shows that underlying sensitivity that made Paul so different than so many other avant jazz musicians of his generation. This is especially true on the sublime reading of Bley's "Mister Joy" – a mindblowing journey in music – but it also comes through on "Blood" as well. CD

✨✧ Paul Bley/Jimmy Giuffre/Steve SwallowLife Of A Trio – Saturday ... CD
Owl, 1989. Used ... $11.99
With players like these, the life of a trio must be a great one – and the album's one part of a two-day recording session done by pianist Paul Bley, bassist Steve Swallow, and saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre! The "trio" tag is somewhat misleading at times – because the album's often a gathering of all three players in the studio, rather than a continuous collaborative effort. Some tracks have a single player, working alone – while others sneak in a duet, and others then follow a trio format – and the album's a great illustration of the sharp talents that all players still had at this point in their career! Giuffre's especially great – and works here on both clarinet and soprano sax – and given that Swallow had been a key part of Jim's trio in years back, many moments often sound like a revival of the more "out" Giuffre trio sides, with the addition of Bley's great tones on piano. This first volume features the "Saturday" recordings – with 12 titles that include "Endless Melody", "Foreplay", "Black Ivory", "Owl Eyes", "Clarinet Zone", and "By The Way". CD

One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. Tabu, 1979. Very Good+ ... $11.99
They're not lying with the title of this album from Brainstorm – because this classic late 70s set has the group moving into some very funky territory – stepping up the basslines even more than before, and really finding a great way to focus on the groove! The approach is right on the money throughout – and sparkles with some deeper touches than usual for a group of this nature – thanks in part to work from key guests like Ernie Watts on reeds, Phil Upchurch on guitar, and Harvey Mason on drums – plus a bit of guest vocals from Syreeta too! The grooves grow up nicely from the energy at the bottom – filled out with lots of quick-stepping instrumentation over the top – and maestro Jerry Peters produced the whole thing with that great mix of sophistication and groove that can make his records so great. The album's definitely one of the clubbiest moments ever from the group – and titles include "Hot For You", "Don't Let Me Catch You With Your Groove Down", "Popcorn", "Funky Entertainment", "A Case Of The Boogie", and "You Put A Charge In My Life". Dollar BrandAfrica – Tears & Laughter ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $16.99 About May 26, 2021
1979 session recorded in Stuttgart, and one that has the master African piano player in the company of a good quartet that features Talib Qadr on reeds and the occasional vocal. Dollar Brand sings a bit himself, and on part of the record, he also picks up a soprano saxophone, which he plays with nice singsong lines in a matter that resembles his piano playing. The set's got a nice mournful sound to it, with a few moments that go more "out" than usual, and the tracks include "Did You Hear That Sound?", "Liberation Dance", "Tsakve", and "Ishmael". CD
This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, May 26.

Anthony BraxtonQuintet Basel 1977 ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1977. New Copy ... $20.99
A very dynamic performance from a very dynamic group – a hipper than usual ensemble for Anthony Braxton, given that just about everyone here is a heavy hitter! The four long tracks are all Braxton compositions – in that special formula that encourages group sonic activity, while exploding with individual solo moments – a good thing, given that musicians include Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, George Lewis on trombone, Mark Helias on bass, and Charles Bobo Shaw on drums! Braxton himself plays alto, sopranino, and clarinet – and Helias has these wonderfully dark tones that kind of seal the deal on the whole performance – a moody bottom that makes all the other sounds really come across in a fantastic way. Titles include "Composition 69 J", "Composition 69 N/G", "Composition 69 M", and "Composition 40 B". CD

Anthony Braxton & John McDonough6 Duos (Wesleyan) 2006 ... CD
Nessa, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
One of the more obscure Anthony Braxton albums of the first decade of the century – but also one that's completely well worth seeking out, as it's got this warm spirit of collaborative creation that takes us back to some of his best moments of the 70s and 80s! The record features duets with trumpeter John McDonough – a Braxton fanatic who's clearly a great partner for the saxophonist to spin out ideas – trumpet notes both muted and muted, mixing with Braxton's work on alto, baritone, sopranino, and soprano sax – each with a very different sense of interplay from track to track! The album features two long, very out numbers – "Improvisation" and "Composition 168 + (103)" – then moves into a sublime sonic exercise on "Massive Breath Attack", offers a surprising reading of "Hail To The Spirit Of Liberty", and also includes the tunes "Finnish Line" and "Schizoid". Dee Dee BridgewaterAfro Blue ... CD
Trio/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Other great cuts include "People Make The World Go Round", "Love From The Sun", and "Love Vibrations". CD

Freddy Briggs (aka Coldwater Stone)Lost Soul Of Freddie Briggs – Defrost Me (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
GSF/Outta Sight (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $9.99
Wow, we knew almost nothing about this record! Freddy Briggs is the main force behind Coldwater Stone – as he wrote and produced all the tracks, and sings lead vocals throughout the record. His style's sort of a mix of funk and soul, and he works in the heavier style that was used by some of the other bands on the legendary GSF imprint – but also has a nice southern soul style in the best moments! Not as grittily funky as the Skullsnaps, but a fitting labelmate – and with a smoldering, geniune soulfulness that's positively killer – a record that's as rare as any other on the label, if not more so! Titles include "End Of the World", "Jefferson Park", "Outside Love Affair", "You're the One", "Biggest Mistake In The World", and "Without The One You Love". This excellent CD version from Outta Site UK packages the remastered Coldwater Stone's Defrost Me album with 2 bonus tracks: "Sound Off" and "I'm So Sorry", with credit and top billing to Freddy Briggs – with notes that provide some insight in the man that we simply didn't have before and we appreciate it! Island/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
Tremendous Island Records material from Bronco – a set that already has the group changing up their sound from their debut, but still really finding a great lead in the vocals of Jess Roden! Roden's got this well-crafted style that crests and crackles, but without ever sounding forced or calling too much attention to itself – this really special quality that's always had us thinking that Jess is one of the great overlooked singers in 70s rock. Production creates some harmonic moments in his solo leads, and other tracks have some harmony support – which warms up the sound in a nice way amidst the acoustic instrumentation. Titles include "Amber Moon", "Time Slips Away", "Discernible", "Sudden Street", "Joy & Fears", and "Woman". CD

Brooklyn Funk EssentialsCool & Steady & Easy ... CD
Groovetown, 1995. Used ... $4.99
We've got to be honest and admit that we always felt that Brooklyn Funk Essentials were one of those second generation bandwagon jumpers of the acid jazz scene, though this LP is not without some redeeming moments, principally the Masta Ace remix of their take on the Pharoah Sanders classic "Creator Has A Master Plan". 12 tracks in all, including "Take The L Train To Brooklyn", "Bop Hop", "Mizz Bed-Stuy" and "Big Apple Boogaloo".
