✨✧ Depeche ModeSome Great Reward ... LP
Sire, 1984. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A huge one for Depeche Mode – an album that laid the ground work for pretty much all their big records to come! The album's one that moved them from being just another electro group in the post-punk years to pop giants, with a sense of songcraft that helped them rise to become one of the more enduring acts of this scene – with surprising longevity in their catalog, thanks to a record like this! The group hit it both hard and sweet on classics "Master & Servant" and "Blasphemous Rumors" – plus the huge crossover hit "People Are People" – and cuts that include "Something To Do", "Lie To Me", "Stories Of Old", "If You Want", and "Somebody". Sire, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
The debut of one of the most forward-thinking, longest living, unique pop music phenomenons of the 80s onward! Although Depeche Mode diehards might bristle at being lumped in with pop music giants, you really can't deny that they're often emotionally raw, even morose songs, married with a range of synth friendly production got over with a huge audience with pretty astounding success. Here where it all started, with Vince Clarke writing all the songs on this one. Titles include "New Life", "I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead", "Puppets", "No Disco", "Photographic", "Dreaming Of Me" and more. CD

Joe HendersonMode For Joe (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. New Copy ... $25.99 28.99
Classic early work by modern tenor genius Joe Henderson – very well titled with the use of "mode", given the new sound and new direction Henderson was taking his tenor in the 60s! The album's got Joe working at the head of an all-great lineup that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes – the last of whom really brings in some tremendous moments to the record, using his instrument to create a slightly off-kilter feel that pushes the set from straight hardbop into the modern realm with traces of "new thing" tones and colors. Joe's solos are incredible – searing, searching, yet still pulsing with an undeniably soulful rhythm – and titles include the essential track "Black", plus "Caribbean Fire Dance", "Free Wheelin", and "Shade Of Jade". Randy WestonRandy Weston – Mosaic Select (Piano A La Mode/Little Miles/Live At The Five Spot/Unissued Session/Uhuru Afrika/Highlife) ... CD
Mosaic/United Artists/Roulette, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $49.99
Some of the most important work ever recorded by Randy Weston – 5 early albums that really pushed the boundaries of modern jazz! First up on the set is Little Niles – a fantastic set that features some of Weston's best early compositions – angular and Monk-ish numbers, but with a profound influence from African rhythms. Next up is Live At The Five Spot – a really compelling live set that features Randy working out Little Niles-ish numbers with a live group that includes Kenny Dorham and Coleman Hawkins. After that is Piano A La Mode – a sublimely simple album of mellow piano tracks – followed by a series of previously unissued tracks done with a quartet that includes Roy Haynes, Cecil Payne, and Ron Carter. Following that are some of Randy's most Afro-centric albums – very unique for the time, and equally powerful today – the records Uhuru Afrika and Highlife – both of which feature larger groups working through some distinctly African ideas in jazz. Nearly every record features arrangements by Melba Liston – and if you've ever wondered where to start with Randy, this is it – because the set encapsulates nearly all of the biggest contributions he ever made to jazz! 40 titles in all – with tunes that include "Little Niles", "Nice Ice", "Earth Birth", "Gingerbread", "Saucer Eyes", "204", "CB Blues", "Where", "Fe Double U Blues", "African Lady", "Bantu", "Kucheza Blues", "Blues To Africa", and "Congolese Children". CD

An unusual Dave Brubeck set from the start of the 60s – surprisingly on Fantasy, given his Columbia fame of the time – and with a slightly different lineup that features the great Bill Smith on clarinet! Smith's got a cool modern sound that's not unlike Jimmy Giuffre – icy but expressive too, and both a great fit for the band because and apart from their usual work with Paul Desmond! Eugene Wright's still on bass, and Joe Morello plays some wonderfully time-kept drums – on titles that include "The Piper", "Frisco Fog", "Lydian Line", "Ballade", "One For The Kids", "Catch Me If You Can", and "Peace Brother". One of the best-ever releases in this amazing series – and a smoking batch of great little cuts that mix dope guitar, funky hammond, and odd off-beat grooves in a very nice way! The whole thing's nicely packaged, with a fresh approach to funk tunes that's quite different from a lot of recent compilations we've stocked – and we're still grooving to this one, even though we've played it three times in a row! Tracks include "Petite Soul" by Little Ed, "Contagious" by Kenneth Wells, "Gasoline Alley" by Dave Grusin, "Pick & Shovel" by The Touch, "Mind Blow" by Roger Hamilton Spotts, "Un Homme De Mort" by Michel Legrand, "Chicano Chaser" by Ian Langley, "Studio 69" by The Mohawks, "Soul Thing" by Tony Newman, "It's Your Thing" by The Invaders, and "Move Your Hand" by La Clave. 20 cuts in all! Delmark, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A dynamic sextet outing from tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander – easily one of the best straight jazz albums recorded by the Delmark label in the 90s, put together with a rock-solid sound all the way through! Alexander's tenor would be enough to make the record great, but the album also features piano from perfect partner Harold Mabern – once Eric's teacher, but a player who's set on fire anew by his presence on dates like these. Other members of the group include trumpeter Jim Rotondi – nicely focused in the frontline here, and matching Alexander and trombonist Steve Davis on the heads with a classic sort of Blue Note energy. Bass is by John Webber and drums are by George Fludas – and titles include a great modal reading of "Naima", plus "Mode For Mabes", "Sugar Ray", "Erik The Red", "Love Thy Neighbor", "Stay Straight", and "For Heaven's Sake". An extremely great session from Eddie Costa – one of the best of the all-great Mode sessions from 1957! In what is an odd meeting of players, especially for the label, Eddie's piano and vibes meet up with Art Farmer's trumpet, the alto of Phil Woods, bass of Teddy Kotick, and drums of Paul Motian – all of whom work together with the fluidity and soulfulness of some of the best Prestige sessions of the time. The horn work is tremendous – and it's hard to remember Woods sounding this great on other albums of the time, really cutting an edge next to Farmer's trumpet – which also has an incredible tone for the album, right up there with his Farmer's Market record. ✨✧ VariousClub Jazz A La Mode 3 ... CD
Rambling (Japan), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A host of unusual club jazz tracks – a number of which are from groups we haven't heard before! The set's more in a jazzy club mode, than the straight acoustic vibe we usually associate with the club jazz approach – but there's still plenty of great instrumental moments, and a sound that's warmly soulful throughout, even when the beats get a bit heavy, or the instrumentation a bit electric. The package follows very nicely in the vein of the other releases in the series, but digs a bit deeper too – and titles include "Club De Cigale" by Tape Five, "Charleston Butterfly" by Parov Stelar, "Message From Herbie" by Beatfanatic, "Higher" by Jojo Effect, "Il Sorpasso" by Bebo Beat & The Super Lounge Orchestra, "Understanding The Rich" by Alice Sings The Petterson Songbook, "Wonderful" by Brenda Boykin, "Always Love (Sunaga T rmx)" by Fabio Nobile, and "Smooth Operator (DJ Niche & DJ Shinsuke rmx)" by Karen Aoki with Native. ✨✧ Pepper AdamsPepper Adams Quintet ... CD
Mode/VSOP, 1957. Used ... $8.99
An obscure late 50s gem from Pepper – a stripped-down quartet session that has him blowing in a very open-ended mode – quite a difference from some of his more tightly arranged sets! The feel's a bit like Pepper's work with Donald Byrd, but even more openly swinging – played by a quintet that includes Stu Williamson on trumpet, Carl Perkins on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Tracks are all long and fresh – and the record's almost got the feel of a great Prestige blowing session from the time. Pepper's work on baritone is jaw-dropping throughout – and titles include "Unforgettable", "Baubles Bangles & Beads", "Freddie Froo", and "Muezzin". CD

Don FagerquistMusic To Fill A Void ... LP
Mode, 1957. Near Mint- ... $38.99
One of the few albums as a leader from trumpeter Don Fagerquist – a player who's best known for his work in larger groups, but who steps out here leading a tight octet of his own! The set's certainly got traces of Don's work within larger west coast groups of the time – but also shares some of the more open and spontaneous styles of his labelmates' work on the Mode label at the time – kind of an opening of the west coast approach of the 50s, still with a focus on arrangements and the overall feel of the work – but also in a way that swings easily and openly! Members of the group include Herb Geller, Bob Enevoldson, Marty Paich, and Mel Lewis – and tracks include "The Song Is You", "Easy Living", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "All The Things You Are". Richie KamucaRichie Kamuca Quartet ... LP
Mode, 1957. Very Good ... $19.99 23.99
Pure genius from tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca – a magical exercise in tone and balance, played by Richie with that warm and raspy style that we love so much in his work! Kamuca's probably best known for his bigger group work of the 50s, but on a session like this he steps out as a marvelously creative soloist – working at a good bop-inspired clip, but also taking the time to explore deeper, more personal ideas through his well-voiced solos on the set. Even on more familiar numbers, Richie steps out with a sense of personality that transforms the tunes to his own way of thinking – and he's very well aided in this work by a crack rhythm section that includes Carl Perkins on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. Titles include originals like "Fire One", "Early Bird", "Rain Drain", "My One & Only Love", and "What's New". LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie MannHi Flutin (aka Flute Fraternity) ... LP
Mode/Premier, 1957. Very Good+ ... $8.99
An excellent little album from the team of Herbie Mann & Buddy Collette – one that has both players using a wide range of reed instruments, and not just flute! Herbie and Buddy are wonderfully paired here – in a way that expands past the usual flute jazz mode by adding in bits of tenor sax, alto, and clarinet – as well as a range of different flutes too – not in a mode that's gimmicky, but which complements the lighter sound of the flute with some heavier notes on tenor at just the right moment – in a style that reminds us of some of Jerome Richardson's best records of the time. Rhythm is by the trio of Mel Lewis on drums, Buddy Clark on bass, and Jimmy Rowles on both piano and a bit of celeste – and tracks are long, with a freshly spontaneous feel that's really great! Titles include "Morning After", "Here's Pete", "Theme From Theme From", "Give A Little Whistle", "Herbie's Buddy", and "Pop Melody". This is a 2nd pressing of the Mode album Flute Fraternity – without Buddy Collette as the co-leader on the cover, and with his name listed in the notes as Bobby Collette! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest 50s showcases for the tenor talents of Warne Marsh – a deceptively understated album that captures Warne at his most fluid and creative point! The setting is a quartet – with Ronnie Ball on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and Marsh is magnificent throughout, really blowing with a tone that is fresh and filled with modern ideas – yet never overdone, nor too willfully complex to lose the train of the tunes. The approach is almost Konitz-soulful – a wonderful distillation of ideas in the hands of one magical talent – and titles include "Ad Libido", "It's All Right With Me", "Playa Del Ray", "Autumn In New York", and "You Are Too Beautiful". Pretty obscure stuff from Don Nelson – a hip swinging jazz vocalist who we only know from this one album on Mode! Like some of the best obscure titles on Mode, this one takes a under-documented player from the LA scene of the 50s pairs him with a nice backing combo, and cuts a few respectable sides that will stand as the artist's only real legacy. Nelson mostly sings – in kind of a Bobby Troup-ish way – but he also plays a bit of recorder, which sounds nice and spooky! He's backed by a trio that includes Jimmy Rowles on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and titles include "The Wind", "Taking A Chance On Love", "It Happened Once Before", "Nobody's Heart", and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most". The group here features Vince Guaraldi on piano, Richie Kamuca on tenor, Monty Budwig on bass, and Stan Levy on drums – and the sound's a lot harder than you'd expect from the combo. Guraldi's especially rough-edged – with a soulful sound that's quite different than his 60s recordings, one that sounds great next to Rosolino's horn. ✨✧ Laurie AllynParadise ... CD
Mode/VSOP, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant work by a singer we know little about – but who really sparkles on this session! Singer Laurie Allyn was making something of a name for herself on the Chicago scene of the mid 50s when she was courted by Mode Records, and brought to LA for this rare studio session – but unfortunately the label went out of business not long after the tunes were recorded, and the album never saw the light of day at the time! The quality of the music is tremendous – higher than even the other Mode vocal sessions, and done with a depth and feeling that we'd rank with a rare few others from the 50s. Marty Paich handled arrangements on the record, and Laurie's backed by a core group that includes Al Viola, Red Mitchell, Mel Lewis, and Paich – plus larger horns and additional strings on a number of tracks. And although we always appreciate Paich's arrangements, the charm here is mostly Laurie's own – as she sings with a sultry sensitivity to the material that really transforms the familiar tunes into deeply personal statements. That quality's a rare one, even for a well-known singer – and we're extra happy that this great session's finally seen the light of day at last! Titles include "Easy Living", "You're So Bad For Me", "You Go To My Head", "All I Need Is You", "Paradise", "Take Me In Your Arms", and "That's What A Woman Is For". CD

Arguably one of the best records cut for the short-lived Mode label in the late 50s – and easily one of the best from trumpeter Conte Candoli too! For the session, Conte front a quartet with Vince Guaraldi on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and Guaraldi's piano style's got a heck of a lot more soul than you'd expect, a detail that brings a nice depth to a session that might have been otherwise lightweight – and which comes off with the same strength overall as the pair's outing from the same time for the Crown label. Candoli seems to play about half the tracks with a mute, but still in a style that's more open and fluid than much of his other work from the time – and titles include "Tara Ferma", "Diane", "Mambo Blues", "Mediolistic", and "Walkie Talkie". An excellent set of 50s west coast chamber jazz – featuring a quintet that includes Harry Babasin on cello, Terry Gibbs on vibes, Demsey Wright on guitar, Ben Tucker on bass, and Bill Douglass on drums. The pairing of cello and vibes in the frontline is really great – and with additional support from guitar, the instruments really swing nicely on the set. The album's the sort that you might miss, because the Premier label was sort of a budget operation – but it's a really nice little side that grooves with a keen late 50s approach that's very much in the manner of similar albums on Dawn or Bethlehem – but arguably better, as it's recorded with an open feel, and some really great sound. The album's got a relaxed feel that's different than a lot of Stan's other sets – not nearly so tightly arranged as before, and with room for Kamuca to open up on tenor in that magnificent tone of his, with some additional strong work in the frontline from trumpeter Conte Candoli – and some inventive piano work from Lou Levy, who manages to give the record a real sense of depth with his phrasing. Levey's leadership is wonderful on the set – very much in the background, but with a warmth that's clear in the playing of all the members of the group – and a clear inspiration to make the record more than just another "players you know from larger groups heard in a quickly done small group session". Tracks are longish, and titles include 2 great Kamuca originals – "Stan Still" and "One For Joan" – plus "Ole Man Rebop", "What Can I Say", and "Old Folks". CD

✨✧ Warne Marsh QuartetMusic For Prancing ... LP
Mode, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Peter NeroJust For You (aka The Bernie Nerow Trio) ... LP
Mode/Premier, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
2nd pressing of one of the most obscure sessions for the legendary Mode label – a one-off date by The Bernie Nerow Trio – a group that was actually led by pianist Peter Nero, working on the original album under a "nom de date", but billed here on the 2nd pressing with full credits! The Nero sound here is much jazzier than on any of his more overblown pop instrumental sides from the time – a lightly leaping approach that still allows plenty of space for his strong command of the keys, yet which never succumbs to its own excesses. Rhythm is by the team of Max Wayne on bass and Dick Stein on drums – and the record's got a gentle warmth and easygoing feel that we like a heck of a lot! Titles include "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "Scratch My Bach", "Red's Romp", "Love For Sale", "How About You", and "Our Love Is Here To Stay". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Frank RosolinoFrank Rosolino Quintet ... CD
Mode/VSOP, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best albums on the rare Mode label – and a great quintet side by trombonist Frank Rosolino! Titles include "Tuffy", "Fine Shape", "Cherry", "Let's Make It", "Fallout", "Thou Swell", "How Long Has This Been Going On" and "They Say". CD

✨✧ Joy BryanJoy Bryan Sings ... LP
Mode, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A sweet little session of 50s vocal jazz – equally great not just for the singing by Joy Byran, but also for the arrangements by pianist Marty Paich! Paich's captured here at a great early point scoring for singers – and he gives Joy the same fluid jazzy approach that he used on the best Bethlehem albums by Mel Torme – a great thing for the singer, as it really makes the album sparkle a bit more than it might on its own. Joy's a pretty decent singer overall – with a range that's surprisingly deep, and a delivery that's best on the lighter, more sprightly tunes on the session – which are the sort that Paich does his best work with. Players include Bob Enevoldsen, Herb Geller, and Jack Sheldon – and titles include "You're My Everything", "My Shining Hour", "Round Midnight", "My Heart Stood Still", "I Could Write A Book", and "What Is There To Say". ✨✧ Bobby TroupBobby Swings Tenderly ... CD
Mode/VSOP, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare all-instrumental outing from Bobby Troup – best known for his work as a singer and songwriter at the time! But like a number of Bobby's contemporaries on the male vocal scene, Troup was equally well-skilled at handling the keys – no doubt because he'd frequently be called to accompany himself when trying out a tune at session, or during a more intimate live performance. Here, the group's a larger one than might be expected – a septet that features horn work by Bob Enevoldsen, Stu Williamson, Ted Nash, and Ronnie Lang – all of whom are featured in some nicely arranged passages, but who often step aside to let Bobby have plenty of space to solo. And we've gotta admit, we like Troup's vocals so much we wouldn't expect his piano to be that entertaining – but he really sparkles with a lightly playful approach on tracks that include "Always", "I See Your Bass Before Me", "It Never Entered My Mind", and "Stella By Starlight".
