DJ ShadowMashin' On The Motorways/Walkie Talkie (CD single & videos) ... CD
Mo Wax (UK), 2003. Used CD&DVD ... $2.99
Some of the finer Private Press-era Shadow cuts get stretched out, beat up, and kicked into overdrive by UNKLE, Soulwax, DJ Z Trip and others! Z Trip's take on "Right Thing" revisits Shadow's style directly – breaking the track up into three uptempo parts, making it into a bit of an epic. Soulwax takes the mellow, trippy cut "Six Days" and reshapes into kind of a post punk/moddish rocker – 180 degrees from the album version, and a really nice take! "GDMFSOB" resurrects the UNKLE guise with a guest spot by Roots Manuva. Surprisingly, the title cuts are buried a bit on the single – radio edits of "Walkie Talkie" and "Mashin' On the Motorway" – but the package includes a bonus DVD featuring the videos for those two cuts. VariousRoyalties Overdue ... CD
Mo Wax (UK), 1994. Used 2CDs ... $19.99
A nice piece of history! It's easy in these post-Headz days to forget the sort of records Mo Wax was putting out in the early days, and though there's some seminal trip hop included here, like Shadow's "Influx" and RPM's "Food Of My De-Rhythm", there's some straight up acid jazz too, and not bad at that, like the early DJ Krush single "Slow Chase", with live sax & organ, and his collaboration with Monday Michiru "Hear Between The Silence", Marden Hill's "Come On", the Gil Scott-Heron-ish "If" by Step and the Federation's "Life So Free". But the real kicker fo rus was the inclusion of one of our favorite early singles, Palm Skin Productions beautiful reading of Miles' classic "In A Silent Way", with Chris Bowden blowing beautifully on soprano. Mo Wax (UK), 1990s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A great overview of the legendary MoWax label – served up here in a 2CD set that's filled with some of the label's harder to find early singles! The package covers a lot of ground in a short space, and while it's a bit incomplete in terms of notes, it's got plenty of MoWax rarities to make up for that – unique head-nodding tunes that really helped set the stage for musical changes to come in later years! Titles include "Only The Strong Survive" by DJ Krush, "The Plot" by Prunes, "Have Mercy" by Howie B, "Blueprint" by Attica Blues, "What's That Sound" by Sam Sever, "Clubbed To Death (the first mix)" by Clubbed To Death, "What Does Your Soul Look Like (parts 1 & 2)" by DJ Shadow, "Sortie Des Hombres" by RPM, "A Polished Solid" by Luke Vibert, "Time Has Come" by Unkle & Howie B, "Claire" by Patrick Pulsinger, and "The Beast" by Palmskin Productions. Mo Wax (UK), 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first full album by one of the strongest acts to ever appear on Mo Wax – and possibly the last great album that the label ever cut! These days this Attica Blues effort for trip hop flagship Mo Wax may largely be remembered for its moody, downtempo electronic atmosphere – but it would do a listener good to keep in mind the Attica Blues functioned as a bonafide group. Live instrumental embellishments such as lush string accents, jazzy basslines, and languid, genuine emotion that helped lift the group out of the trip hop brand name and give them a presence all their own! Titles include "Tender", "808 Song", "Questions", "Impulse", and "Blueprint" plus more! CD

8th Day8th Day (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
The first album by 8th Day – a record with a bit of a complicated pedigree, but a massive amount of 70s Detroit soul as well! The set was supposedly compiled to cash in on the group's hit single "She's Not Just Another Woman" – reportedly recorded by 100 Proof Aged In Soul, but issued under the name 8th Day, so that it wouldn't compete with the group's other hits on the charts! But after that cut took off, Holland-Dozier-Holland needed a group to back it up, so they assembled some lesser-known, but strong, Detroit soul talents to record this album. Unlike the group's second album, which is a much funkier affair overall, this one sounds a lot like 100 Proof – with a raspy southern-tinged soul approach, filtered through some tighter, more full-on HDH arrangements that really give the whole thing a great sort of punch! A great album if you dig the Invictus/Hot Wax soul sound – and titles include "I'm Worried", "Enny Meeny Miny Mo", "You've Got To Crawl Before You Walk", "Just As Long", and "She's Not Just Another Woman". Futuristica (UK), 2009. Used ... $6.99
More beats than straight jazz, but pretty great overall – a set that really reminds us of that key 90s moment when real jazz instrumentation first started creeping into the work of beatmakers! Simon S is at the head of the project – handling most beats and instrumentation, often with a spare, soundscapey feel that really takes us back to the glorious early years of Mo Wax – or perhaps the initial glimmer of genius we heard from Kruder & Dorfmeister. There's a bit of guest vibes, sax, and flute at times – but most of the main jazzy bits are from keyboards and piano. Titles include "One For Joe", "Land", "Maybe", "Time For", "Bologna", "J Bounce", "CM Vibe", and "Thoughts Of You". CD

Hot Wax/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A really compelling little set from Satisfaction Unlimited – a group we only know from this one corker of a record on the Hot Wax label! The style's a bit in some of the harmony modes of the east coast scene of the time – yet like most Hot Wax/Invictus work, there's also a bit of an odd twist too – a quality that's hard to peg in words, but which is sometimes slightly trippy, other times warmly soulful – almost a Cali indie sort of vibe – with a bit of sunshine that breaks through amidst some of the darker, heavier themes of the record. There's plenty of great numbers with a catchy vibe that could have almost gotten these guys the radio play of some of the RCA groups of the time – and titles include "Time For Us", "Think of The Children", "Bright City Lights", "Let's Change The Subject", "Come On Back", and "Why". Kent/Dolemite, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 12.98
The title's a reference to a famous antacid commercial in the early 70s – but from the cover, it's obvious that Rudy Ray Moore wants you to think of it in a much nastier way! Given the sounds on the wax, it's easy to do – as the set's one of Moore's best from a time when he was the king of the party record – able to tell dirtier jokes than even most comics in the club – with very upfront, sexual-heavy dialogue – backed by some tightly soulful instrumentation! The music makes the whole thing groove nicely, even though it's a bit more buried in the mix than on some of Rudy's other records – which leaves the man himself screaming it strongly out front. A few tracks have guest vocals by Lady Reed – and titles include "That's My Watch", "The Marines", "Hit Her With A Rock Long D*ck", "As Much Ass", "Everybody Kneelin Ain't Prayin", "Sell It Girls", and "Dangerous Dan". Sounds Of TomorrowSounds Of Tomorrow (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $4.99
Moogy, groovy, and really wonderful stuff – a set of rare private recordings made by the team of Scott Ludwig and Maximillian Crook, both electric inventors and very groovy musicians in their own right! The pair have a bit of a connection to Del Shannon – who used their Musitron instrument on the chorus of his hit "Runaway" – and a few of these tracks were actually produced by Shannon himself, in later years away from pop fame. But over and above that brief connection to mainstream pop, this work more than stands out on its own – and crackles with a sound that's simple, yet intense – almost a 60s garage rock aesthetic applied to electronic instrumentation, with a result that's got the appeal of some of Bruce Haack's work, but none of the child-like themes. Ludwig's playing the Sonocon and Crook is on the Musitron – both instruments of their own invention, and with a fuzzed-up approach to analogue electronics – and the CD features a range of material from in-home recordings and a rare live date! Titles include "Beeswax", "Our Electronic Bag", "Space Child", "Hero", "Punk Walk", "Firefighter's Theme", "The Diamond", "Runaway", "Caravan", "Hawaiian Vibes", and "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight". The issue has a great rundown on the contemporary London jazz scene and its amazing array of talent – plus articles on Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz, Mainstream Records, and Acid Jazz Records – and special articles that detail famous breaks that built up a whole generation of contemporary music – including "Apache" by The Incredible Bongo Band, "It's A New Day" by Skull Snaps., "Impeach The President" by Roy C, "Midnight Theme" by Manzel, "Synthetic Substitution" by Melvin Bliss, and "Amen Brother" by The Winstons. 127 pages, squarebound, full color, and with hardly any ads at all! Tommy WhittleWaxing With Whittle – Tommy Whittle Studio Recordings Vol 1 ... CD
Esquire/Solid (Japan), 1953/1954. Used ... $16.99
A great saxophonist from the British scene of the 50s – one that most Americans don't know as well as Ronnie Scott or Tubby Hayes, but who cut some equally important work at the time! The tunes here are all small group numbers – all with Dill Jones on piano, most with Tony Kinsey on drums, and a few with Harry Klein on baritone – and throughout the album, Whittle demonstrates a wonderfully rich, raspy tone on the tenor – one maybe influenced by Lester Young, but with the deftness of the bop generation – served up here on 14 beautifully swinging tunes. Titles include "Martini", "Zythum", "Debut", "Yesterdays", "Zoot Suit", "I'm Beginning To See The Light", "Symphony", and "Waxing With Whittle". CD

Wax Trax, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99
A beautiful tribute to one of the greatest record stores of all time – and a place that was crucial in the formation of what we do at Dusty Groove too! Wax Trax Records began as a store in Denver in the mid 70s – influencing a generation of young punks in that city, before then moving to Chicago a few years later – where it became a key outpost for all sorts of underground culture from around the globe! We grew up as young shoppers in the store, and it forever changed the way we thought about music – and this fantastic film really gets at everything that made the place great, and then follows the growth of Wax Trax as they launched a label that gave them an even stronger global impact by the end of the 80s. The film's also tells the love store of the couple behind the legend – Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher – and features commentary and contributions from an all-star lineup that includes Steve Albini, Dave Grohl, Jello Biafra, Al Jourgensen, David J, Richard 23, Ian Mackaye, Trent Reznor, and many others – plus an insane amount of vintage footage that reminds us how exciting a city Chicago used to be! Special bonus – this package also features 75 more minutes of extra footage – longer parts of the interviews used to create the film. DVD

VariousStone Crush – Memphis Modern Soul 1977 to 1987 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A look at Memphis soul music that goes way beyond any Stax, Goldwax, or Atlantic Records collections you might own – partly because all of the tracks here are from a time in the city when all those other labels had stopped recording! Memphis is usually remembered for a 60s/early 70s stretch when the city was brimming over with record labels, studios, and top soul talent – but that latter aspect of the scene didn't stop when the record companies went bust – and instead, it just went underground, as lesser-known artists kept on developing great new sounds and styles! As you'd guess from the title, most of the work here is in a modern soul mode – often with rhythms that have a bit of boogie or club in the mix, but also with some of that developing southern soul approach that was maybe more strongly associated with the Malaco label down in Jackson. The scope of music is great, and the set's got very detailed notes on this under-documented time in the history of Memphis soul music – to support a great tracklist that includes "Can We Melt The Ice" by Morris, "You Mean Everything To Me" by Sweet Pearl, "The Doctor" by LA, "Stone Crush On You" by OT Skyes, "What Does It Take To Know A Woman Like You" by Greg Mason, "Always" by Silk Satin & Lace, "Right Thing" by Kick, "Convict Me" by Libra, "Slice Of Heaven" by Cato, "I'm Choosing You" by Magic Morris, "No Seat Dancin" by Frankie Alexander, and "Keep It To Yourself" by Captain Fantastic & Starr Fleet. ✨✧ Rudy Ray MooreI Can't Believe I Ate The Whole Thing ... LP
Kent, Mid 70s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
RCA, 1981. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A modern soul gem produced by Lenny White! Though White lends a touch of jazzy sophistication to the set, it's a straight up dose of mainstream modern soul, with great ensemble vocals and crisp production over tight songs that should have landed Wax at the top of the radio. Somehow though they managed to only find success with some sought after singles years after the fact, but you can grab the whole album here! It's got all the hallmarks of the best of the era – chirping guitars, tasteful keyboards that sit just right in the mix, and rhythms and tempos on most of the tracks that veer between club oriented grooves and tight pop soul. 9 tracks in all, including "Can't Hide From Love", "Crazy In Love", "Playin' The Part", "The Right Time For Us", "Do You Believe In Magic", "Music's On The One", "When And If I Fall In Love" and "April Lady". One of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used ... $5.99
Excellent work – and believe it or not, a great big band album led by Chet Baker! Although Chet's mostly best known for his work in small groups, he's really shining here as the leader of a large ensemble that includes a mix of "cool" west coast players on horns – Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Conte Candoli, and others – plus more hard bop-oriented players on rhythm – Lawrence Marable, Jimmy Bond, and the great Bobby Timmons – making a surprise appearance on piano! The combination makes for a real monster of an album – crackling with energy all the way through, and featuring some of Baker's hardest solos on wax! Tracks include "A Foggy Day", "Mythe", "Phil's Blues", and "Tenderly". 16 tracks in all. CD

Pianist Bob Degen is great here – but the record shines equally from the contributions of the great Terumasa Hino – who plays cornet throughout, and really puts a bold sort of sparkle on the record! In truth, the whole group is great – a quartet that also features Cameron Brown on bass and Motohiko Hino on drums – and there's a soaring, positive energy to the record that really stands as one of Degen's strongest statements on wax – a tremendous session that also features two originals by the leader, and two more by Hino – played with nonstop creative energy throughout! Express RisingExpress Rising (2nd album) ... CD
Numero, 2013. New Copy ... $7.99 13.00
A warm batch of instrumental beats and atmospherics from Express Rising – and a much-anticipated second project from funk archivist Dante Carfagna! Dante's a name you probably know best from his work writing liner notes or Wax Poetics – and helping out in countless important compilations over the years – but a decade ago, Dante dropped his first mysterious project under the Express Rising name – and finally returns here with a second album! The sound is even more enticing this time around – still drawing a bit from the world of DJ Shadow – a frequent Carfagna collaborator on archive projects – but the sound is also surprisingly warm and lyrical too – bits of beats, layers of older sounds, and these spare keyboard bits all served up together in a style that's really unique – and which avoids any of the cliches of both the downtempo world, and the instrumental hip hop scene The approach is often quite poetic, yet still soulful as well – and the whole thing's got a laidback vibe that's neither sleepy nor muddled – a really sort of special space between the grooves. Titles include "Horse Opera", "Dark Early", "Answering Echo So Near", "Winter The Heart", "A Treasure Smile", "Rooms Between Us", and "Memorabilia". CD

RCA/Nature Sounds, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 21.98
Massively funky work from the mighty Weldon Irvine – sublimely cosmic and filled with soul throughout! The vibe here is a bit more focused than on some of Weldon's earlier albums – a moody blend of electric keys, heavy percussion, and some slight bits of jazzy solo work by trumpeters Charles Sullivan and Everett Blood Hollins, and saxophonist Sonny Fortune – both players who really help the album find some soulful structure! The album's all-instrumental, and has Weldon really taking off on the keyboards – not just using them for main solos, but also dropping in cool noisy bits and analogue effects that really sound great – almost out-Herbieing Herbie Hancock for the record, and turning in some of his biggest classics on wax! Titles include the massive sample cut "We Gettin' Down", plus "Jungle Juice", "Blast Off", "Softly", "Power & The Glory", "Yasmin", and "Pogo Stick". LP, Vinyl record album

Louisiana RedDead Stray Dog – The Blues Purity Of Louisiana Red Vol 2 ... LP
Blue Labor, 1975. Near Mint- ... $34.99
Great 70s work from Louisiana Red – recorded in a style that makes the album one of his most earnest, personal sets on wax! The record was done in close collaboration with producer Kent Cooper – a friend and very sympathetic ear for Red's music – and also the co-writer of most of the tunes in the set – or at least "co-developer", as most of the lyrics were initially penned by Cooper, then picked up casually by Red and slowly worked into very unique tunes of his own. The approach here is excellent – just Red himself on vocals and guitar, recorded straight without any sort of hoke or mainstream pandering at all – which is why the album's probably been the under-discovered gem it has been for so many years. Titles include "Riding On A Tall White Horse", "Dead Stray Dog", "Held Up In One Town", "New Jersey Woman", "Caught My Man & Gone", and "Bad Case Of The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Orchestra BaobabBamba ... CD
Sterns (UK), 1980/1981. Used ... $9.99
More killer work from Senegal's legendary Orchestra Baobab! This CD collects music from two of the band's best late-period albums, Mouhamadou Bamba (1980) and Sibou Odia (1981), both cut prior to the band's celebrated Pirate's Choice sessions. All of the group's trademarks are present – the rollicking Afro-Cuban grooves and the gorgeous Mandinkan and Wolof melodies sung with muezzin-like soul by Thione Seck, Rudy Gomis, and Balla Sidibe. Still, it's the utterly sublime lead guitar by the brilliant Barthelemy Attisso that captivates us most. A number of the tracks were later rerecorded for Baobab's comeback album Specialist in All Styles, but there's something about the beautifully murky aura here that's lost on the slicker remade versions. Really, you can't go wrong with anything waxed by Baobad. Ten great tracks including "Boulmamine", "Doomou Baaye", "Bon Bon 1", "Autorail", "Sou Sedhiou", and "Ndiambaane". CD

Overlooked genius from the Dutch jazz scene of the postwar years – a set of small combo dates that feature trumpeter Rob Pronk, including two groups led by American players too! Pronk's got a tone that's clear, but never too clean – maybe the focused brightness of the young Howard McGhee, mixed with some of the richer feeling of the young Kenny Dorham – almost always matched here by great tenor work, which makes the tracks an equally strong delight! Players include Harry Verbecke, Toon Van Vilet, and Ruud Brink on tenor sax – plus Herman Schoonderwalt on alto, Rob Madna on piano, Ack Van Rooyen and Jerry Van Rooyen on trumpets, and Ruud Pronk and Cees Slinger on drums – and the set then also features an unusual twist – as Pronk steps over to piano, and works in one group with Ake Persson and Frank Rosolino on trombones, and another with Zoot Sims on tenor. There's a huge amount of music here to discover – and the presentation and recording quality is superb – on titles that include "Latecomer", "Four Roses", "Jack's Wax", "Blue Monk", "Funkerin", "Tune", "Sassy", "Minor", "Corner Pocket", and "Monotones". The album's truly one of the great ones – one of those Blue Notes that still makes you stop and pause when you hear it, even though you've heard it a million times in Starbucks and places like that. Horace Silver is working here at the height of his powers – lyrical, free, yet also damn soulful, in a style that makes for some of the most evocative jazz-based grooves cut to wax at the time. Carmell Jones is in the group, and plays some of his best trumpet ever – and Joe Henderson really drives the whole session home with some incredible tenor work. Tubbs has an approach to the work that's steeped in older references, and which crackles with the feel of older vinyl – as keyboard lines, bass parts, and warm percussion drift in and out of the tunes with a feel that makes us think we're listening to instrumentals pulled from a crate of 70s wax. Killer instrumentals from the glory days of the garagey combo – a smoking little set that's very heavy on twangers – those wicked guitar-driven cuts that were often recorded with lots of cool echo and effects! Years back, Bongo was known as a hotbed of Latin and Brazilian music – but the sounds here are also rare funk and soul, other global modes, and even a few contemporary touches too – all served up with the care and class that we used to love from a Mr Bongo DJ night in London – way back when we used to make it to events like that! There's no need to know anything about the music in advance – just let the record work its magic, as it takes you through cuts that include "Paradise Island" by Azwon, "Eyes Growing Wider" by Carnival, "Throwing Stones (Kenny Dope mix)" by James Reese & The Progressions, "Amanha O Tempo Muda" by Lincoln, "Mama Matotoya" by Vikings, "Sputla" by Teaspoon Ndelu, "Al Elnim" by Hamlet Minassian, "Selfportait" by Matty, "Extralude (Wyndham Earl's more than an interlude rmx)" by Wax Machine, "Lotus 72 D" by Ze Roberto, "Sonho Lindo" by Don Ricardo, "The Peruvian" by DJ Format & The Simonsound, and "Don't Stop This Train" by Cindy & The Playmates. VariousVerve Remixed Christmas ... CD
Verve, 1940s/1950s/1960s/2008. Used ... $4.99
A Holiday take on the Verve Remixed series – one that features classic jazz and vocal Christmas tunes, served up here in fresh new mixes! The vintage of the originals seems to be even older than the usual work in this series – more traditional tracks that probably provide a bit more challenge to the remixers, but which also offer up some solid seasonal grounding in both the vocals and familiar melodies. Unlike other volumes, there's less of a dance impulse going on here – which is great – as most numbers are taken at a pace that's roughly in keeping with their original tempos. Titles include "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Oh No rmx)" by Jimmy Smith, "Winter Wonderland (Christian Prommer rmx)" by Shirley Horn, "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm (Yesking rmx)" by Billie Holiday, "Good Morning Blues (Real Tuesday Weld Clerkenwell rmx)" by Count Basie, "Silent Night (Brazilian Girls rmx)" by Dinah Washington, "I Am Blessed (Wax Tailor rmx)" by Nina Simone, "The Christmas Song (Sonny J rmx)" by Mel Torme, and "What A Wonderful World (Orb rmx)" by Louis Armstrong. VariousWe Pay Respekt – Evergreens From Grey Reality Poland ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1970s. Used ... $6.99
Respect flows both ways here – not just respect for the Polish jazz scene that made some great music during the Communist years, but also respect for the global artists who inspired them – as you'll see in the setup of the collection! Most tunes here are covers – but they're done in very different ways than you might expect – a range of styles that runs from funky fusion, to jazz vocals, to progressive rock, to Latin piano – a great illustration of the depth that was happening in the Polish scene back in the day! The package was put together by the same guys who gave us the Polish Funk compilations – but actually goes way beyond those in scope, and includes loads of gems that haven't been reissued otherwise – making us wish we could dig even deeper into Polish wax from the 60s and 70s. Titles include "Cool Jerk" by Polanie, "Respekt" by Niebiesko Czarni, "One Note Samba" by Novi Singers, "Desafinado" by Bossa Nova Combo, "Livin In Sin" by Test, "Fare You Well" by Spiritual Singers, "Naima" by Extra Ball, "Kameleon" by Orkiestra PRiTV, "Madrox" by Big Band Katowice, "Fool On The Hill" by Novi Singers, and "Brazil" by Jozef Mazurkiewicz Orchestra. VariousYasagure Kayou Saizensen – Victor Collection ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... $29.99
Sweet female pop from Japan – most of it recorded in the mid 70s, and pulled together in a package that's similar to some of the soundtrack-related collections that Hotwax & Trax have done for the Ultra Vybe label! The sounds here are a bit smoother than those on the soundtrack set, but equally compelling – a blend of Western pop modes of the time with some uniquely Japanese touches – often set to instrumentation that includes lots of keyboards and some occasional funky rhythms. There's a surprisingly soulful feel to a number of the tunes, one that gets past the Japanese-only lyrics – and speaking of that, the notes and titles are all in Japanese so we can't tell you more – but the music's pretty compelling! ✨✧ Grassella OliphantGrass Roots/Grass Is Greener ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 great albums by drummer Grassella Oliphant recorded for Atlantic in the mid 60s – back to back on a single CD! 1965's Grass Roots is a moody set of tracks played by a small group that includes Harold Ousley on tenor and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes. Ousley's sound is amazing, and he hits these wonderful moments on some of the solos that will just blow you away. He almost never gets his due on wax, and this record is certainly one of his finest moments. Hutcherson's pretty darn great, too, and lays out some haunting lines on the vibes that match his best Blue Note playing. Titles include lots of originals by Ousley, including "Haitian Lady", "Mrs. O", "The Descendant", and "One For The Masses". Nice stuff, and one that hardly ever turns up! Grass Is Greener is a nice lost bit of funky soul jazz from the obscure drummer! The album's a stone groove, very much in the Blue Note mid 60s mode – and it features Big John Patton, Grant Green, and Harold Ousley. Includes the great groovers by Patton & Green, "The Yodel" and "Soul Woman", a nice cover of "Cantaloupe Woman", and a killer breakbeat version of "Get Out of My Life Woman", with very hard drums at the beginning! Very groovy and funky, in a way that's similar to some of John Patton's best work on Blue Note for the time. CD

Invictus/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An insane bit of fuzzed-out funk! This is Parliament's rare first album – a trippy batch of tunes that come off of Clinton's experimentation in the Detroit soul scene, infused by the rock-heavy energy of the city at the time – and probably a heck of a lot of cannabis, too! The record is quite different than the slick funky sound of the group's later work for Casablanca – and has the psychedelic funk sound of the early work of Funkadelic, which was also recorded during the same period. The album's filled with funky classics – including "I Call My Baby Pussycat", "Little Ole Country Boy", "My Automobile", "Funky Woman", and "Nothing Before Me But Thang". CD features loads of bonus tracks too – 7 more numbers that include "Red Hot Mama", "Come In Out Of The Rain", "Unfinished Instrumental", "Loose Booty", "Breakdown (mono)", "Fantasy Is Reality", and "Breakdown (stereo unedited version)". Quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The group features Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, and Doug Watkins – and tunes include an original reading of the perennial Rollins' standard "St. Thomas", plus a great version of "Moritat (Mack The Knife)", and the cuts "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7". Blue Note, 1963. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record – the kind of album that only Blue Note could put out, and an instant classic that will sound wonderful forever! Other group members include Teddy Smith on bass and Roger Humphries on drums – and titles include the instantly famous "Song For My Father", plus "Que Pasa", "The Kicker", and "Calcutta Cutie". ✨✧ VariousCaribbean Disco Boogie Sounds – Rare & Obscure Gems From The Caribbean Territories 1977 to 1982 ... CD
Favorite (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer collection of funky soul from the Caribbean – not tracks that have a typical island sort of sound, with roots in calypso, soca, or reggae – and instead just he kind of key cuts that match the best underground work on the New York scene! Keep in mind that lots of American disco came from musicians who'd moved up north from the Caribbean – bringing a sunny spirit and driving rhythms in the process, as well as a post-colonial, diaspora approach to the music – which was then fused with American soul and funk for the clubs! This set has a very similar vibe, but just reverses the process – with grooves that borrow plenty from the hipper club styles of the late 70s and early 80s, and come across with a freshly non-commercial vibe, given their Caribbean roots. We'd never heard most tracks here before – hats off to Waxist for compiling the collection – and titles include "Cosmopolitan London" by Ray Williams, "Praise Jah" by Oluko Imo, "My African Religion" by Paul Hurlock, "Going To The Party" by Barry Bryson, "Let Me Love You" by Teddy Davis, and "Macho Man" by Eddie & The Movement. ✨✧ VariousMainstream Soul Survey – Man Needs A Woman ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare look at the soul music side of Mainstream Records – a label that's mostly known for its famous jazz fusion sides of the early 70s – but who also turned out a fair bit of great soul work as well! Most of the Mainstream soul tracks were only ever issued as 45s – making this collection even more valuable in the way that it scoops up countless bits of lost wax, and brings them together in a whopping 26 track package – much of which has never been reissued before! The titles here all originally appeared on the Mainstream, IX Chains, and Brown Dog label – and although Mainstream often had a reputation for tight production on its jazz, there's a nicely rough-edged feel to most of these numbers – styles that echo southern soul and New Jersey indie work from the same time. Equally important is the fact that many of these cuts represent obscure early material by artists who would score much bigger on later labels – a great help to filling in the cracks in their early careers. Titles include "You Can Be Cured", and "Take A Few More Steps" by Randolph Brown, "We're Not Too Young To Fall In Love" and 'When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" by Jackie Beavers, "It's All In The Back Of Me Now" and "Everyone Has Someone" by Linda Perry, "Where Can I Run" by The Underground Express, "Call On Me" and "Intruder" by LJ Reynolds, "Down On Me" by Jeany Reynolds, "Satisfy My Woman" by Calvin Arnold, "Grass Ain't Greener" by Charles Beverly, "We Gonna Make It" by Roger Hatcher, "You Shot Me" by The Georgia Soul Twisters, and "Business Deal" by Doris Duke. ✨✧ Bob Brookmeyer/Jimmy GiuffrePortrait Of The Artist/Four Brothers Sound ... CD
Collectables, 1958/1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two classics of modernist jazz on one CD! Both records are from the Atlantic studios, and they're both quite tough to find on wax. Brookmeyer's Portrait Of The Artist is one of his best works, and features him on piano and trombone, playing with largeish groups over a suite of tracks entitled "Blues Suite", plus the cuts "Mellow Drama", "Darn That Dream", and "Out Of Nowhere". The real treat, though, is Jimmy Guiffre's rare Four Brothers Sound album – a record that uses early overdubbing techniques to let Giuffre play four tenor sax parts at once! The sound is amazing, and although he's backed by usual trio-mates Brookmeyer and Jim Hall, Brookmeyer plays piano, and the set has a bit more swing than usual. The 4-tenor frontline is wonderful, and titles include "Four Brothers", "Ode To Switzerland", "Space", "Blues In The Barn", and "Memphis In June". CD

One of our most favorite albums from the Cocteau Twins – a set that's got this raw energy that maybe links the group much more closely to the post-punk generation than the later 4AD scene – but a record that definitely shows that the group were already very firmly in a space of their own! The basslines are stronger than a few years later, and they have this very moody quality, rumbling there at the bottom – while the guitars carve out all these fuzzy spaces along the side of the music, and the majestic vocals of Liz Fraser soar over the top. The set shows that the group are more than just a happy accident between samples and beats in the studio – and there's a more unified vibe to the whole album – with a cover that almost makes it look like Wax Trax is trying to show 4AD that the Chicago scene can do them even better – and trax that have the best feel of what had been bubbling under in the clubs for the past few years. A stone burner from 100 Proof Aged In Soul – a group who really take off with this tight second record! The album's a classic from the days when soul music ruled AM radio on both sides of the tracks – and the rest of the album is equally great – packing that tight post-Motown punch that made the Hot Wax label one of the best proponents of Detroit soul in the 70s! Arrangements are by a huge amount of early 70s heavyweights – McKinley Jackson, Paul Riser, and HB Barnum – and the set was produced by General Johnson and Greg Perry, in a style that soars along with the Chairmen Of The Board albums of the time. Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
Music beyond description – a unique blend of disco, funk, avant garde, and dub – the wonderful world of the late Arthur Russell! Russell was a bass player by trade, but he was schooled in both classical and Eastern music forms – and brought an incredibly fresh vision to his work in New York in the late 70s and early 80s. To some, Russell was a groundbreaking disco pioneer – with an offbeat production style and unique conception of rhythm. To others, Russell was a performance artist and avant garde musician – working in circles that included Phillip Glass, David Byrne, and Robert Wilson. This mix of modes was very much a part of the post-disco, post-punk sound of New York at the time – and nobody summarized it (or allowed it!) better than Russell himself. This excellent set from Soul Jazz is one of the first to truly give him his due – and it brings together a large amount of his disco-related projects, plus a few more introspective numbers cut under his own name. The sound is incredible – unlike anything you could categorize – especially on the Russell-titled numbers – and as always with Soul Jazz, the whole thing's beautifully packaged, with rich notes on the music and the person behind it! Titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Wax The Van" by Lola, "Is It All Over My Face (Larry Levan mix)" by Loose Joints, "In The Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Pop Your Funk" by Loose Joints, "Schoolbell/Treehouse (Walter Gibbons mix)" by Indian Ocean, and "Let's Go Swimming (Walter Gibbons mix)", "A Little Lost", "In The Light Of The Miracle", and "Keeping Up" by Arthur Russell himself! Mad soundtrack work from this equally-mad series of Japanese films – tunes that run the gamut from rough-edged girl rock to seductive crime jazz – offered up in a glimmering assortment of sounds that we wouldn't have access to otherwise! The package appears to bring together music from four different films (the notes are all in Japanese, unfortunately) – and the styles here are as dynamically groovy as some of the best European soundtracks we love from the time – possibly even more so, given the occasional use of fuzz guitar or female vocals in Japanese! As with other Hotwax CD reissue titles, this one's got a look that's as dramatic as the music – and while we'd love a bit more English in the notes and package, we're more than happy enough to have access to music this wonderful. There's a nice amount of fuzz in the grooves – that post-Motown style that uses lots of great bass and guitar alongside core Detroit soul modes – and although the vocals have more of a rockish approach, the instrumental undercurrent is a great mix of funk, rock, and soul! Early work from Sterling Harrison – a soul singer who was mostly missed the first time around, but has had more of a revival in recent decades – although maybe not as strongly as on this obscure west coast album recorded with the production team of Holland Dozier Holland! This isn't Motown HDH, nor even their Invictus/Hot Wax style – as the album has a strong 80s soul vibe throughout, with lots of beats, keyboards, and catchy numbers in a boogie funk mode – yet it's also clear the top-shelf studio help really gives the record a lot more focus and punch than other efforts of this nature, in a way that mixes Sterling's deep soul vocal inclinations with some material that could have crossed over at the time. A great little package that finally gives the Liverpool scene its due – especially during a time when many other English cities are credited with helping to shape the sound of modern music! Late 70s Liverpool had little going on since the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – but the rise of Inevitable Records gave the city a great voice to challenge the other punk and post-punk material of the time – and stood as an important stepping stone for a number of acts who went on to much bigger labels during the 80s! This package brings together all the a- and b-sides of Inevitable, along with replicas of all their cool 45rpm sleeves – important, as the label mostly just issued 7" singles – but with a force that has become legendary over the years. An amazing soul duo from the Memphis scene of the 60s – George Jackson and Dan Greer, who artists who are perhaps best known as songwriters and producers – but who recorded some wonderful work together at the start of their careers! Only a handful of the Jackson/Greer singles were ever issued by the small Goldwax label – which makes this collection a huge discovery for longtime fans of their music, like us – since the CD features 17 never-issued titles from the Goldwax vaults, all of which easily match the few that saw release back in the 60s! Both artists are great vocalists – and get hip Memphis backings that are very much in the best Stax or Goldwax styles of the time – and there's a depth to this music that may well have gotten Jackson and Greer the same kind of attention as James Carr on his own legendary Goldwax work. A few titles have some wonderfully spare backings – almost just piano behind the heavenly vocals, which is quite unique for the time – and the set features 23 tracks in all – with titles that include "Love Attack", "It's So Nice", "A Road To Nowhere", "Fascination", "I See Sadness Ahead For Me", "I Don't Want To Be Hurt", "I'm Still In Love With You", "Will You Be Around", "To Me It's Storming", "Good Times", "Do The March", "Don't Wake Me Up", "That's Why I Love You", and "Nothing Can Touch My Love I Have For You". Titles include "Chase The Dream" by Funkshone, "Don't Take It Too Hard" by Tuomo, "I Believe In Miracles" by Eddie Roberts & The Fire Eaters, "Where I'm At" by Push with Candi Staton, "Self Reliance" by The Liberators, "The Bouncer" by New Cool Collective, "Yellow Soul Force" by Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro, "Pick Up The Pieces (parts 1 & 2)" by Osaka Monaurail, "Above The Law" by Federation Of The Disco Pimps, and "This Time" by Baby Charles. John CarpenterEscape From New York (expanded 180 gram colored vinyl pressing – with 12-page booklet) ... LP
Waxwork, 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $39.99 47.98
A seminal soundtrack from the legendary John Carpenter – one of those key records that showed the world that he was as great of a composer as he was a director! The album's a Carpenter-esque masterpiece – lots of cool, spare electronics – used in ways that make the whole movie a whole lot scarier than even the images on the screen – a quality you'll definitely appreciate here as you listen to the album on its own! Some of the best sounds are the most subtle – spare use of basslines and keyboards that almost make you feel as if Moebius and Rodelius have gone over to the dark side – and these are mixed with just a few more "action" based moments. Titles include "Up The Wall/Air Force 1", "Everyone's Coming To New York", "The Duke Arrives/The Barricade", "Back To The Pod/The Crazies Come Out", "Police State/Romero & The President", and "Chase Across The 69th Street Bridge". John CarpenterFog (40th Anniversary 180 gram colored vinyl pressing –with 12-page booklet) ... LP
Waxwork, 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 47.98
Wonderful sounds from the great John Carpenter – one of those records that reminds us that his music is often just as important as the images he puts on the screen! Carpenter's music for The Fog follows nicely in his work for other films – particularly Halloween – in that it's got this slow-building style that often makes great use of keyboards – often used sparely, with a really spooky sort of energy – and even more space, and at slower speed than his other horror soundtracks! The style really fits the "fog" theme of the film! Includes a bonus record of the original movie cues which have never been made available on vinyl before. LP, Vinyl record album

James CarrTake Me To The Limit ... CD
Goldwax, 1991. Used ... $6.99
Recent work by James Carr – cut for Goldwax, but with classic production by Quinton Claunch and Roosevelt Jamison, who more than respect Carr's incredibly soulful vocals. And sure, the work's not as completely sublime as Carr's late 60s recordings, but it's still pretty darn nice – and it's enough that Carr got a chance to get back in the studio after a longtime absence. Titles include "Love Attack", "Sugar Shock", "Take Me To The Limit", "High On Your Love", "Our Garden Of Eden", "What's A Little Love Between Friends", and "Lack Of Attention". CD

Lou DonaldsonHot Dog ... CD
Blue Note, 1969. Used ... $11.99
From the title, to the cover, to the gritty grooves way down in the wax – this has got to be one of the funkiest Blue Note albums ever – a real landmark from the legendary Lou Donaldson! The set kicks off with a hard and heavy groove from the very first note – thanks to some super-tight drumming by a young Idris Muhammad – still billed under his birth name of Leo Morris on the sleeve, but already hitting the kit with that snapping post-Popcorn style that would revolutionize funky jazz in years to come! Donaldson's plenty smoking himself on electrified alto sax – played with that great mix of flatness and echo that you'd hear in Eddie Harris' albums of the same time – and the rest of the lineup is equally cooking, with Melvin Sparks on guitar, Charles Earland on organ, and Ed Williams blasting away on funky trumpet! Titles include killer remakes of "It's Your Thing" and "Who's Making Love" – plus Donaldson originals "Hot Dog" and "Turtle Walk" – all nice and long, and with a really raw sound! CD

El-MaloStarship In Worship ... CD
99 Records (Germany), 1994. Used ... $13.99
Their crazy first album, though they'd contributed a track here and there to compilations, including some early MoWax stuff. Lots of weird dubby tracks and insane instrumentals, with clattering percussion and the odd moogy burp. Though their second LP ended up being a bit of a let down, this one's pretty great, right down to the cover. Includes "Big Ship Whopper", "Floppy Loot Stomp", "Cosmic Dragon Dub (rmx)", "Apes-Ma" and "Monkey Monarchy". CD

Honey ConeSoulful Tapestry (with bonus track) ... CD
Hot Wax/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99
Definitely a soulful tapestry here – as the trio of Edna Wright, Shellie Clark, and Carolyn Willis are at the height of their 70s powers – soaring forth in a massive trio mode, and one that really rewrites the sound of girl group soul for the 70s! There's a bouncy, upbeat groove to the record – kind of a pre-disco approach, but one that's still strongly rooted in the best Detroit soul mode of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team too – balanced with just the right sort of force that makes the trio sound great, and all without any of the cliches that this sort of group might hit a few years later! Titles include the Honey Cone classics "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (parts 1 & 2)" and "Want Ads", plus the tracks "VIP", "The Day I Found Myself", "Stick Up", "Don't Count Your Chickens", "All the Kings Horses", and "How Does It Feel". CD features the bonus track "We Belong Together (single version)". CD
