MissionMission EP ... LP
Columbia, 1986. Near Mint- ... $1.99
The first ep by The Mission – a US harmony soul group whose name forced the British rock group The Mission to become Mission UK on these shores! Despite that bit of now-faded industry history, the group's not a bad one – sweet 80s harmony, almost in a style that was a bit ahead of its time – lost somewhere between the Jacksons and a huge amount of groups to come in the early 90s. The vocals are upfront on most of the tracks, and although there's a bit of 80s production, it never goes too far to overwhelm things. Titles include "I'll Be Right There", "Wanna Be Free", "Something About You", and "Time After Time". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, and OthersJazz Mission To Moscow ... LP
Colpix, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jazz from the heart of the cold war – not actually recorded in Moscow, but featuring a bunch of hip players on their return from a tour of the Soviet Union – a historic moment in which west met east, with some groovy jazz in the offing! Apart from the tenor of Zoot Sims and alto of Phil Woods, the record also features flute and alto from Jerry Dodgion, trombone from Willie Dennis, trumpets from Markie Markowitz and Jimmy Maxwell, and piano from Eddie Costa – and the set features arrangements from Al Cohn on tracks that hit the 5 minute range – tight at the top, with breakaway solos, as you might hear during some of the Cohn/Sims sides for RCA during the 50s! Titles include "Let's Dance", "Mission To Moscow", "The Sochi Boatman", and the obligatory "Russian Lullaby". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ RezillosCan't Stand The Rezillos/Mission Accomplished But The Beat Goes On ... CD
Sire, 1978/1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
First up is Can't Stand The Rezillos – a record with guitars fast and hard enough to almost be late 70s punk rock, but which often comes off with a more playful, whimsical new wave sort of approach! Tracks are short and hook-heavy – produced by Bob Clearmountain with that razor-edged quality he brought to his best work of the time – and the trading off of lead vocals between Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds makes the record hang nicely in a space between Blondie and The Ramones! Titles include "Flying Saucer Attach", "No", "Top Of The Pops", "2000 AD", "It Gets Me", "Glad All Over", and "Cold Wars". Next is Mission Accomplished – a fierce little live set from The Rezillos – one that comes as quite a surprise, since the group had only issued one studio set before – but a great choice overall, as the live setting really seems to set them on fire! Things here are harder, faster, and sharper than on their debut – with more punk speed and energy in the guitars, even if the songs themselves are more in a power pop mode – as tuneful as they are quick-moving! The concert was actually the group's last – recorded at a time when they'd announced a breakup – and that maybe gives the whole thing an urgency that was missing before, and which really makes us wish they'd kept recording. Titles include "Top Of The Pops"," Mystery Action", "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonite", "Thunderbirds Are Go", "No", "Teenbeat", "Ballroom Blitz", "Destination Venus", and "Culture Shock". Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBuhaina ... LP
Prestige (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
An amazing album that has Art Blakey completely reinventing himself for the 70s! Blakey shifts from straight hardbop to kind of a modal soul jazz groove, touched with some of the electric playing of the younger jazz generation, but not enough to qualify as fusion or funk. Instead, he's working with some great younger players – like Carter Jefferson, Woody Shaw, and Michael Howell – hitting a groove that reminds us of some of the best underground soul jazz on labels like Muse or Strata East. Includes the amazing long groovers "Mission Eternal" and "Chant For Bu", a famous Tribe Called Quest sample – plus new electric piano versions of "Moanin" and "Along Came Betty", both of which feature vocals by Jon Hendricks. ✨✧ Ethnic Heritage EnsembleBe Known Ancient/Future/Music (deluxe 2LP edition) ... LP
Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $41.99 44.99
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". Brian FinkeHip Hop Honeys (hardcover) ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2018. New Copy ... $6.99 35.00
Powerhouse Books has given us some great volumes on classic hip hop culture in New York – but this book is more about the contemporary scene, and the world of bling and booty – full color images that resonate very much with the photo on the cover, and which maybe have less of the political mission of other books from the press. The photos were often shot on the set of hip hop videos, and represent some of the tropes that drive that art form on the screen – occasionally commented on by a more candid shot that might catch a model in a moment of boredom – but usually feeling more like photo stills from the production. Full color, hardcover. Book

David Grubbs/Mats Gustafsson/Rob MazurekUnderflow ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.00
A fantastic meeting of the musical minds – coming together here in a set of live improvisations recorded at a record store in Greece! The setting's an unusual one, and the music is too – sounds that really move past the usual for all three players, but especially David Grubbs and Mats Gustafsson – both of whom seem very comfortable here in some of the sonic territory that we normally hear more from Rob Mazurek! Grubbs' guitar is quite different than on some of his own records – especially the solo acoustic moments – and Mats reminds us that he's not just a hell of a saxophonist, but also a master of many other ways to disturb the flow of air – delivering work here on flute, fluteophone, and live electronics – the last of which is matched with more electronics from Rob Mazurek, who also plays piccolo trumpet and wood flute too. Every song has a different shape and texture, which is a further testament to both the sensitivities of the musicians, and their sympathies with each other – and titles include "Not In A Hall Of Mirrors", "Creep Mission", "City Stones Sleep", and "Goats & Hollers". BBE (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A fantastic collection of cross-cultural grooves from Daniel Haaksman – the man who first raised our ears with his excellent Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats compilations – then kept on giving us great music during all the years in between! This set has Haaksman providing his own edits of tracks that have a fair bit of global elements in the mix – contemporary club, but rife with acoustic, organic sound styles – which are further expanded by Daniel in his thoughtful edits throughout the entire set! There's plenty here for the dancefloor, but also a deeper cultural mission at hand – on tracks that include Haacksman edits of "Akabongi" by Soul Brothers, "Vamos Farrear" by Pinduca, "Morbiyassa" by Kaba Blon, "Cazukuta" by DJ Havaiana, "Sunny Crypt" by Francis Bebey, "Me Gritaron Negra" by Victoria Santa Cruz, "Dissan Na M'Bera" by Super Mama Djombo, and "Black September" by Master Chivero. Karl Hector & The MalcounsUnstraight Ahead ... CD
Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 17.98
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". ✨✧ JaylibChampion Sound ... LP
Stones Throw, 2003. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 22.99
Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. To Detroit", "McNasty Filth" with Frank-n-Dank, "Nowadayz", "Champion Sound", "The Red", "Heavy", "Raw S*!t" with Kweli, "The Official", "The Heist", "The Mission", "React" with Quasimodo, "The Exclusive" with Percee P, "Survival Test", "Starz" and "No Games". Stan KentonViva Kenton! (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1959/1963. Used ... $7.99
Stan the man, grooving in a sweet Latin mode! The paring of Kenton modernism and Latin rhythms might seem an odd combination – but it works beautifully on this session by adding in rich tones and shades of colors to the lively percussion in the set! Kenton's orchestra is augmented by a great percussion section that includes Mike Pacheco, Willie Rodriguez, and Tommy Lopez – and horn players like Don Sebesky, Charlie Mariano, and Rolf Ericson really flesh out the tunes with some fluid ensemble work. Titles are mostly originals by Roland, and include "Siesta", "Mission Trail", "Agua Marine", "Chocolate Caliente", and "Opus In Chartreuse Cha Cha Cha". Plus, added to the album are 6 bonus tracks from Artistry In Bossa Nova – recorded in 1963, and including "Artistry In Bossa Nova", "Interlude", "Jump For Joe", "Loco Nova", and "Concerto To End All Concertos". ✨✧ Lee Scratch Perry & The UpsettersBattle Of Armagideon (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
A really striking mid 80s effort from the legendary Lee Scratch Perry – done at a time when his name and reputation had risen strongly on the global scene – which also seems to come through in the music as well! There's a wider range of styles going on here than before – and Scratch is more upfront, less hidden behind his own production – feeling that sense of mission as a messenger for madness that he seemed to take up at the time – a quality that comes through both in his lyrics and vocals, and in the nicely mish-mashed production as well! The set is credited to The Upsetters, but not the classic lineup – more a cast of characters behind much of the classic Black Ark material, though in good command of Scratch's brand of funky reggae. Titles include "Introducing Myself", "Time Marches On", "The Joker", "All Things Are Possible", "Grooving", "Drum Song", "I Am A Madman", "Show Me That River", and "Sexy Lady". Benjamin PiekutHenry Cow – The World Is A Problem ... Book
Duke University Press, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 29.99
A fantastic look at the music of Henry Cow – that important British band of the 70s, and a key bridge between the worlds of art, experimentation, politics, and improvisation at the time! Henry Cow trafficked in ideas that were fairly intellectual, but the group had a way of bringing them down to a wider mainstream audience – in a mode that's summed up perfectly by the author in the ending essay of the book, in which he speaks of a "vernacular avant garde". Before that, though, he gives a richly detailed account of the group's artistic and political mission, and their role in the 70s UK scene – presented with far more detail than we ever could have hoped for, and which really illuminates the group's enigmatic records, as well as work by the related Slapp Happy too. A massive book – almost 500 pages, with copious notes, and a fair bit of black and white photos. Book

Sun Ra & His Solar-Myth ArkestraSolar-Myth Approach Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey/BYG, Late 60s. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 20.00
Really unique material from Sun Ra – a pair of recordings that were initially circulated much more strongly than some of his Saturn Records material, thanks to the power of the BYG/Actuel label in the early 70s – but tracks that actually come from a variety of different sessions that Ra himself did with the Arkestra in the late 60s! Tracks are shortish, but very inventive – a well-chosen snapshot of all the new ideas that the group were cooking up during the end of the 60s in New York, with an increased mission to explore the outer reaches of space, and use more electronics than ever before! Ra plays some killer keyboards – moog, spacemaster, and acoustic piano – often with these really eerie tones – and other players include Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Akh Tal Ebah on space dimension mellophone, Ali Hassan on trombone, Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor, and Pat Patrick on baritone – and the whole group vocalizes at points, joined by other singers who include June Tyson and Art Jenkins. There's also some great use of "strange strings" on the sessions, not to mention a bit of reverb – and tracks titles include "Spectrum", "The Satellites Are Spinning", "Seen III Took 4", "Adventures Of Bugs Hunter", "Legend", "The Realm Of Lightning", "The Utter Nots", "Outer Spaceways Inc", "Scene 1 Take 1", "Strange Worlds", "Ancient Ethiopia", "Pyramids", and "Interpretation". Sun Ra left the planet a few decades ago, but his Arkestra has been going strong – really carrying the torch that the great one kept burning – and stepping out here in their first studio album in 20 years! The record is really something special – that core Sun Ra spirit, but taken in righteous territory that shows just how much the group has evolved in his absence – still with alto saxophonist Marshall Allen as the leader, but a combination of classic Arkestra members and younger musicians who have really helped continue that legacy of mentorship and spiritual exploration that was always the greater mission of the ensemble. The production is great – never too commercial, and handled brilliantly to capture the spirit of the group at their most expressive – with a lineup that also features Knoel Scott on alto, James Stewart on tenor and flute, Michael Ray and Cecil Brooks on trumpets, Vincent Chancey on French horn, Farid Barron on piano, Dave Hotep on guitar, Akatunde and Elso Nascimento on percussion, and Tara Middleton on vocals and violin. Saturn/Modern Harmonic, 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $24.99 25.99
The voice of June Tyson was a key part of the sound of the Sun Ra Arkestra during the first few decades of its existence – but this is the first time the lady herself has ever gotten a record under her own name – a beautiful collection of Ra-backed, Tyson-fronted tunes that includes classics and a fair bit of unreleased titles too! The music is from deep in the catalog of Saturn Records – and showcases a singer who could have taken both the jazz vocal and soul music worlds by storm, had she not chosen to dedicate herself to the larger cultural mission of the Arkestra – a place that June Tyson called home for more than a decade or two – and where she gave the world sublimely soulful vocals like these. Heavy, classic styled funk & soul from Laura Vane & The Vipertones – really killing it in a similar vein as some of our favorite female fronted, blue-eyed female fronted UK funk – but it an even harder grooving, grittier and anthemic mode! It's pretty heavy on the bottom end, thanks to some some hard hitting drums and percussion, with a mod soul touches and Motown indebted moments. Hypnotic organ funk from Lyman Woodard – an old bandmate of Dennis Coffey, and one of the shining lights of the 70s Detroit scene! This is amazing, amazing stuff – Woodard's electric piano, organ and occasional mellotron and Norma Bell's alto saxophone lend a cosmic funk aspect throughout, very much like Death Wish-era Herbie Hancock – with a laidback, tripped-out groove that's really mindblowing! Ron English accents the thing perfectly with his languid guitar and bass groove, while Leonard King and Lorenzo Brown's drumming and percussion can keep the groove adrift, or tear it up in a funky maelstrom depending on the mission of the cut. It's totally essential Strata jazz funk – and a record we've rarely seen in the original pressing. Joe Claussell brings out all his best tones here – those cosmic elements mixed with earthier elements that have always kept his music grounded so firmly in tradition – a future vision, but one with a keen ear for the past as well – spun out over a mix that includes "Cross Roads" by Ron Trent, "Elektric Afrika (Joe Claussell rmx)" by The Bayara Citizens, "1960 What (Opolopo kick and bass rerub)" by Gregory Porter, "With More Love" by Joaquin Joe Claussell, "Once Again (morning factory edit)" by Reggie Dokes, and "Old Landmark (Joe Claussell's mission for today voc)" by The Djoon Experience with Kenny Bobien. We really love all the different volumes in the Mod Jazz series from Kent Records – they've been instrumental to our musical education over the years – so we're always happy to have "Mo", especially with a collection this great! The material comes from a number of different indies from the 60s – and the style here is definitely mod, in that hip mix of R&B, soul, and jazz that was brewing on the London scene back in the day – but which was always best delivered by American artists like this! The music bristles with heavy tenor, Hammond organ, scratchy guitar, and the occasional well-belted vocal – and the whole thing feels like finding a jukebox full of carefully-selected 45s in some lost southside tavern. 22 tracks in all – including "Smokey Joe's La La" by Googie Rene, "Blue Vibes" by Johnny Lytle, "Cholo" by Brown Brothers of Soul, "Soul Jam" by Booker T & The MGs, "Money" by Freddie Roach, "Mission Impossible" by Johnny Gilliam, "Spider Man" by Freddie McCoy, "You Win I Lose" by Little Johnny Taylor, "You Can't Sit Down" by Chris Colombo, "Eyesight To The Blind" by Mose Allison, "My Train" by Merl Saunders, "Brother Ray" by Willis Jackson, and "Right On" by Boogaloo Joe Jones. FMP/Be! (Germany), 1991. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive document of a really incredible project – a set of key duo improvisations that bassist Peter Kowald created with some of the leading free jazz musicians around the world – recordings that came relatively late in the legacy of the FMP jazz label, but which are very much in the best tradition of its mission! Kowald's talents were part of many classic FMP sets before this one – but the package really allows him to rise up and shine in the spotlight – through amazing duo improvisations recorded in Berlin, New York, Tokyo, and a few other global locations – with partners in a varied line up that includes Derek Bailey on guitar, Han Bennink on drums, Tom Cora on cello, Diamanda Galas on voice, Evan Parker on reeds, Joelle Leandre on bass, Andrew Cyrille on drums, Peter Brotzmann on tenor, Akira Sakata on alto, Toshinori Kondo on trumpet, Jeanne Lee on voice, Conrad Bauer on trombone, Fred Frith on guitar, Marilyn Mazur on percussion, and many other key musicians of the time – almost as if Kowald is trying to tie together the entire world of improvisation, while also demonstrating his wonderfully adaptive talents. Very limited box set presentation – divided up into an LP each of performances from Europe, America, and Japan! LP, Vinyl record album

Ridge Runner, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost mid 70s gem from mandolin player Roland White – who had earlier, along with his brother Clarence, helped bring bluegrass back into contemporary relevance with their group The Kentucky Colonels and went on to play with giants from Lester Flatt to Bill Monroe. I Wasn't Born To Rock'N Roll was first released on the Ridge Runner label out of Ft. Worth, TX, back in 1976 – and it's as worthy of a rescue mission for Tompkins Square as even their incredible sets of music from many decades earlier! The musicianship on White's record is excellent, but it's most wonderful for the rawly passionate and purely honest it is. There's just one original in the set, which is more devoted to the tried-and-true, and there's not reason for it not to be. Roland also sings lead and players include Kenny Wertz on guitar and tenor, Roger Bush on bass and high baritone, Alan Munde on banjo and Dave Ferguson on occasional fiddle. Titles include "Kansas City Railroad Blues", "The Storms Are On The Ocean", "Love Please Come Home", "Doin My Time", "Can't You Hear Me Calling", "She Is Her Own Special Baby", "Live And Let Live" and more. Tracks include "Saturday Night Special", "Joy Road", "Belle Isle Daze", "Creative Musicians", "Cheeba", "On Your Mind", "Allen Barnes", and "Help Me Get Away". Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. The deepest sounds so far from Ryan Porter – a double-length album of spiritual majesty, and a set that marks Porter as one of the key up-and-coming players on the West Coast Get Down scene! The record has long tracks that are very far-thinking jazz all the way through – mostly instrumental, although with the occasional vocal passage here and there – delivered with this sense of promise and mission that we never would have expected in Porter's music at the start – both in the strength of his trombone solos, and the overall conception of the sound. The core group is fantastic – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Cameron Graves and Brandon Coleman on Fender Rhodes and piano, Thundercat on electric bass, Miles Mosely on acoustic bass, and Tony Austin on drums – and titles include "Blame It On The Sun", "Carriacou", "Oscalypso", "Peple Talk", "World On Wheels", "Mesosphere", "Madiba", "Heaven Only Knows", and a great jazz take on the Rotary Connection classic "Memory Band". Hardly the gospel of your father's generation – and hardly even the gospel of previous Numero releases either – as the set's a wonderfully offbeat batch of tracks that definitely lives up to the "apocryphal" in the title! Production sounds and musical styles go way past the mainstream – and lots of these numbers feel like secular soul from the definite left end of the spectrum in the 70s – especially the mellower cuts, which have a trippy quality that comes from weird instrumentation and unusual studio work – often matched by vocal presentation that's anything but spiritual, and which feels more like Darondo overall! These tunes are a real discovery – a deeper level of unusual gospel recordings than even the funk and or soul sides featured on other compilations – all pulled from the hinterland of self-released albums and singles from back in the day. As usual, Numero's done as great of job with the notes and packaging as they have with the music – really telling the full tale of this unusual stream of music – in a smoking set that features "That's All I Need" by Sensational Saints, "A Message Especially From God" by Robert Vanderbilt & The Foundation Of Souls, "Come Holy Spirit" by God's Band, "Faith" by Soul Superiors, "Can't Run This Race Alone" by Flying Eagles Gospel Singers, "Searching For The Truth" by Dwain Vinyard, "Get Involved" by Jonah Thompson, and "I Hear You Calling" by Francis Reneau & The Mission Singers. The group also features Ola Hoyer on bass and Gard Nilssen on drums and percussion – and they play with a sense of mission and cohesion that comes through right from the very first note – this mixing of structure and freedom that's right on the money, and which will certainly have us paying more attention to Johansson's music in the future. A fantastic little record – and very much the kind of set that the Strata East label was created to represent! The music here would hardly have found a home on the bigger jazz labels of the period – not because it's too avant garde or non-commercial, but just because it's so deeply personal and powerful – the boldest vision on record of trombonist John Gordon, who composed a mindblowing suite of tracks for the first side of the album, as well as some equally great tunes for the second half! Gordon leads the group on trombone – with solos that are soaring and soulful, alongside work by the great James Spaulding on alto and flute, Waymond Reed on trumpet, John Miller on piano and keyboards, Lyle Atkinson on bass, and Frank Derrick on drums! If you know some of the other players here from their own work of the time, you know you're in for a treat – as the music has this fantastic sound of strong individual voices coming together, instruments lifted high on a mission of music – with results that are as fantastic all these many years as they were in the 70s. The legendary Roscoe Mitchell works here in the more sophisticated compositional style he's been exploring heavily in later decades – joined by the Ostravska Banda ensemble in a large version of "Distant Radio Transmission" – a piece that was first created as an improvisation with Craig Taborn and Kikanju Baku! The format here is quite different than that earlier work – as Mitchell uses a host of woodwinds and strings in really inventive ways – opening up different sonic textures inside the structure of the work, and still allowing for some individual moments of improvisational expression. The album also features a smaller combo work – the really lovely "Nonaah Trio", which features Dana Reason on piano, John C Savage on flute, and Catherine Lee D Mus on oboe – all at a level that's a bit like some of Mitchell's unusual 80s material. "8-8-88" is performed on a Yamaha Kisklavier, and is essentially a solo piece – and the CD version also features a version of Mitchell's "Cutouts For Woodwind Quintet". CD

Fantastic and heartening to us to see a hip hop veteran and longtime favorite delivering this sharply and adventurously after all these years. 15 tracks: "Daddy Fat Sax", "Turns Me On" with Sleepy Brown & Joi, the instant classic single "Shutterbugg" feat Cutty, "General Patton", "Tangerine" feat TI & Khujo Goodie, "Hustle Blood" feat Jamie Foxx, "Be Still" with Janelle Monae, "Fo Yo Sorrows" feat George Clinton , Too Short & Sam Chris, "Shine Blockas" feat Gucci Mane, "Back Up Plan" and more. Walter Bishop JrCoral Keys ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The keys are coral, and the sound is sublime – one of the greatest albums ever from pianist Walter Bishop Jr, and proof that he can really stretch out, given the right setting! The piano here is all acoustic, but there's an almost-electric vibe to the date – long, open tracks that sway and swell with some great spiritual energy – made even more wonderful by work from reedman Harold Vick, who plays tenor, flute, and soprano sax on the record – and makes it one of his best recordings ever! The reedwork alone is worth the price of admission – but the rhythms are also great too – a mix of soulful, modal, and some slight funky bits – handled by Reggie Johnson on bass, and either Idris Muhammad or Alan Benger on drums. Woody Shaw plays trumpet on some cuts, too – and titles include "Coral Keys", "Soul Turn Around", "Freedom Suite", "Track Down", "Waltz For Zweetie", and "Three Loves". CD

Gary Burton with Pat MethenyDreams So Real ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1976. Used ... $9.99
Gary Burton takes on the music of Carla Bley – in a wonderfully sensitive set that opens up rich new colors in her music! The group here is a particularly well-chosen one for the effort – a quintet with Burton on vibes, Mick Goodrick on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums – plus a young Pat Metheny on guitar, really shading in the tunes with his evocative tones. Burton's vibes are angular one minute, spare and spacious the next – and in a way, his treatment if Bley's tunes is some of the most sensitive we've ever heard. Titles include "Ictus/Syndrome", "Dreams So Real", "Intermission Music", "Doctor", and "Vox Humana". CD

John Coltrane1960 Duesseldorf ... LP
Jazz Line (Germany), 1960. New Copy ... $20.99
A really unusual performance from the mighty John Coltrane – recorded in Germany in 1960, with an amazing group that features Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – stepping out from Miles Davis to give Trane a very special groove! These guys give the record a very different swing than some of Trane's other albums of the period – and Kelly punctuates some moments with a soulful style on piano, while Chambers bows his bass a fair bit, which creates these shaded, moody tones. Coltrane himself is wonderful – that clear-blown, incredible sound of his Atlantic years – maybe the best-recorded instrument in the setting, with with beautiful solos that are worth the price of admission alone. Stan Getz makes appearance at one point, as does Oscar Peterson – although the notes aren't that clear – but just concentrate on Coltrane, as that's all you'll need! Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Walkin", "Rifftide", and a medley of "Yesterdays/Autumn Leaves/What's New". LP, Vinyl record album

Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". As a bonus, the 2CD edition also features their debut Prophecy EP – plus unheard tracks titled Ancient Tapes – "Slammin", "Transmission", and "Closing Credits". CD

Nodlew/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
Landmark early work from the legendary Weldon Irvine – recorded way back when he was first coming to fame with Nina Simone, but done as an obscure indie effort for his tiny Nodlew label! The set's a wicked batch of keyboard-heavy funk – at a level that's similar to some of the best titles on Black Jazz or Strata East at the time, but also filled with an even richer array of colors and musical ideas. Weldon's work on electric piano is worth the price of admission alone – often spare, spacious, and perfectly placed – especially on the funky classics "Homey", "Mr Clean", and "Sister Sanctified" – a tune later cut by Stanley Turrentine, but heard here in Weldon's original version! Other cuts include "Gloria", "Juggah Buggah", "Blues Wel-Don", and "Liberated Brother". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare work from Sharon Jones – and a record that's a bit different than some of her other work for the Daptone label! The set features the group doing cover versions of tracks by other artists – some that appeared as singles over the years, others commissioned for projects, and a few that never saw the light of day at all – brought together here to make a unique posthumous album from Sharon and the Dap-Kings! If you know the tightness of the group, and Jones' classic style of soul vocals, you'll know you're in for a treat – a bit like when Otis Redding might have taken on a familiar tune for Stax – in a lineup that includes "Inspiration Information", "Take Me With U", "What Have You Done For Me Lately", "Signed Sealed Delivered", "Just Dropped In", "Giving Up", "Rescue Me", "In The Bush", "It Hurts To Be Alone", and "Trespasser". The set's very different than most Afro Funk albums in recent years – with an unbridled style that's clearly driven by the energy of KOG, whose expressions really have things leaping out on most tracks right from the start – then keep things warm all the way through. Very powerful work from the great Nicole Mitchell – the third of her albums to be based on the work of Octavia Butler, and the first to be done in collaboration with vocalist Lisa E Harris! The music was commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago, and recorded in a large open space in that august institution – which gives the spare moments this wonderfully echoey sound, and the fuller passages a real sense of spontaneous urgency! As with most of Mitchell's music, there's a powerful message within – one that's showcased even more by the vocal contributions by Harris – and in addition to flute, Mitchell also adds in some electronics – as does Harris, plus theremin as well. Other musicians include Zara Zaharieva on violin, Ben Lamar Gay on trumpet and electronics, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Avreeayl Ra on percussion. Strut (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Great work from a group who really know how to open up their sound – a larger ensemble who might have sounded like an Afro Funk combo at one time, but who've really done a lot to find their own special groove! The mix of sharp instrumentation, percussion, and horns could have just gotten a slavish Fela-styled treatment – as with so many other groups of the past decade – but instead, these guys really expand the sound, change the rhythms, and open the door to plenty of contemporary soul and jazz influences too! The result is this warmly glowing sound that shines a special light on these London luminaries – a really collaborative album that also features work from the legendary Mulatu Astatke, and vocals from a few different singers who each get time in the spotlight. Titles include "Border", "Tell It To Me Slowly", "Jungle Run", "Ghosts", "They Talk", "Sugar Cane", "Addis To London", "Permission", and "Brother". CD

Pretty Things/Phillippe DebargePhilippe Debarge ... CD
Ugly Things, 1969. Used ... $14.99
A strange, yet worthy leftfield album by the Pretty Things – one that features unknown French singer and wealthy Pretty Things fan Phillip Debarge – who essentially commissioned the group to write and produced this grooving little record! The Pretty Things and Debarge recorded the set at Nova Studios – one of the earliest London facilities with the state of the art multi-tracking, circa '69 – but there's still a nicely rugged and raucous underbelly to the production that's just tripped out enough with mellotron, harpsichord and harmonies. The album never saw light of day before the good people at Ugly Things saw it through all these decades later – and it's a surprising treasure from the seminal years of the group! Includes "Hello, How Do You Do?", "You Might Even Say", "Peace", "Eagle's Son", "It'll Never Be Me", and "All Gone Now". CD

A legendary Detroit group that's maybe best known for featuring early work from the young Jim Osterberg – later Iggy Pop – but a combo who's more than cooking on their own, with a searing sound that reminds us that blues-styled rock had a mighty strong power in the 60s! Combos like this were a key breeding ground for later psych and prog sounds – and you'll hear plenty of roots of both in the long, freewheeling tunes that are heavy on guitar and keyboard solos – all with plenty of romping rhythms too. The lead guitar of Daniel Erlewine is worth the price of admission alone – able to solo at great lengths, with a very distinct voice and a mode that's never as slavishly tied to standard blues roots – and the whole record has a wonderfully dark, moody vibe overall. Somei SatohMandala Trilogy + 1 ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $38.99
A trio of works created by Japanese composer Somei Satoh in the mid 80s – all very much with the meditative qualities you might guess from the title! The songs here all build slowly – with a strongly resonant sonic space that seems to emerge slowly from a keyboard – some of the fascination with building things up in aural air that we loved in his earlier "Echoes", but taken here into more spiritual territory as deep electronic elements are mixed with occasional vocalizations, but all with a very rich, abstract texture – and more than enough organic elements to really set the work apart from clunkier efforts of the time. There's a moodiness here that's almost as if Popol Vuh were recording for 4AD – but with a quality that's better than those references might imply – and titles include "Mandala", "Mantra", and "Tantra". Also features the later piece "Mai", commissioned by the harpist Ayako Shinozaki! LP, Vinyl record album

Thrill Jockey, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.98
The first album in years from Tortoise – again stretching out creatively in fascinating ways, some subtle and others obvious – and all of it compelling! The Catastrophist is partly inspired by work Tortoise was commissioned to produce by the City Of Chicago, material that could be used in collaboration with the city's great jazz and improvistional musical community. For The Castastrophist record, these musical building blocks were pulled back into Tortoise-ville, where the band could do their distinctive thing. Compelling drums and percussion, creative guitar and bass grooves, and divergent keyboard textures make up the connective tissue – but it's a pretty diverse sound overall! Two of the more fascinating stylistic departures have vocals – a bass-y, synth-steeped cover of the early 70s David Essex hit "Rock On", and the moody, melodic "Yonder Blue" with Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo. Other titles include"The Catastrophist', "Ox Duke","Gopher Island", "Shake Hands With Danger", "The Clearing Fills", "Gesceap", "Tesseract", "Hot Coffee" and "At Odds With Logic". A fantastic document of the first-ever Ann Arbor Blues Festival – the start of a great event that would blossom into other styles of music in the 70s, but which stood as a strong blues-based event in its initial year of 1969! In some ways, the three day series of concerts is a roots answer to Woodstock – which took place just a few weeks before – as the festival featured a great scope of blues talents, from the rootsier sort of artists who were recording for labels like Folkways or Arhoolie, to some of the sharper modern talents rising to the top on Chess or Delmark! VariousEccentric Soul – The Nickel & Penny Labels ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A long-overdue collection – and a rich document of one of our favorite sides of the Chicago soul scene! The package is devoted to the tiny Nickel and Penny labels, but it's also equally a set dedicated to legendary radio DJ Richard Pegue – whose work in both mainstream soul and later dusties formats really helped to shape our understanding of soul music! Pegue produced and wrote nearly every track on the set – which makes the collection one of the most unified the Numero Group has ever produced – a true tribute to Richard's great ear for a groovy soul record, and to all the smaller-name groups he helped support on the Windy City scene. The booklet does a great job of telling Pegue's story – really getting at the unique vision he brought to Chicago soul, and the wit and warmth that made him a favorite of many folks over the space of decades. The music alone is enough – stuff we've been waiting to get reissued for years – but together with the Numero research and booklet, the end result is sublime! Titles include "Just Say The Word" by Jerry Townes, "Fall In Love Again" by The Voices, "Never More" by Little Ben & The Cheers, "Why Do You Want To Make Me Sad" by The Norvells, "Instrumental 1" by Richard Terry & Company, "Shadows" by South Shore Commission, "This Is The Woman" by Sidney Pinchback, "The Ember Song" by Sidney Barnes, "Sign Of The Zodiac" by South Suburban Electric Strings, "This Love Of Mine" by Extensions, "Forever Is A Long Long Time" by The Voices, "Do The Pearl Girl (part 2)" by The Matta Baby, "I've Got To Find A Way" by Hallelujah Chorus, "First Thing I Do In The Morning" by Joyce Williams, and "I'm Gonna Get Even With You" by Little Ben & The Cheers. One of the coolest collections ever put out by The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the hipness of the label! Downriver Revival chronicles the story of a unique studio in Michigan – Double U Sound, a custom recording spot that captured a wonderful range of soul, funk, gospel, and other sounds from the local community – beautifully presented here in a full CD, plus a bonus DVD that features the near-complete 200 song archive of the studio! The DVD's really unique – so we'll talk about it first: Done with an interactive menu that lets you literally comb through the boxes of tapes in the Double U vault – selecting each reel recorded by the studio, and sampling the rich array of wonderful sounds from this untapped Michigan scene – a huge amount of music, far more than you'd ever find on a CD compilation. The DVD also features a documentary on the studio and Downriver Revial project – and that alone would be worth the price of admission – but the CD then features 24 key numbers pulled from the vaults – tracks that were either issued on rare 45s, or never issued at all – and which represent a wonderful array of soulful sounds that definitely lives up to the Numero standard! ✨✧ Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". ✨✧ Sharon Jones & The Dap-KingsJust Dropped In To See What Condition Our Rendition Is In (blue with black splatter vinyl pressing) (2020 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Daptone, 2000s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
✨✧ Oneness Of JujuAfrican Rhythms ... LP
Black Fire/Now Again, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark of 70s Afro-styled jazz – and the first album by this famous underground collective! Oneness of Juju were a Washington DC-based group that grew out of the ashes of the Juju avant jazz ensemble – formed in the culturally rich African-American community of DC in the 70s, with spiritual and political aspirations that stretched far beyond the average funky combo. This first album is a masterful blend of percussion, jazz, and a slight bit of funk – alternating vocal tracks with harder-hitting jazz instrumentals, all held together under the leadership of sax player Plunky Nakabinde – a reedman whose work here alone is worth the price of admission – laid out nicely alongside some great percussion, Fender Rhodes, and wonderfully worm vocals on a few tracks. The album's one of the greatest independent soul jazz albums of the 70s – and it's filled with great tracks, such as the breakbeat classic "African Rhythms" and "Liberation Dues" – plus "Kazi", "Funky Wood", "Don't Give Up", "Poo Too", and "Incognito". LP, Vinyl record album
(Lacquered from the original master tapes in a tip-on sleeve. Includes 12 page booklet!)

✨✧ Orchestra BaobabSi Bou Odja (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Syllart (France), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing classic from Orchestra Baobab – one of those records that reminds us why the group were always so different than anyone else! Some of the rhythms are familiar, but the execution is very unique – chopped up at times, so that the grooves are a perfect mix for the angular tenor and alto lines form Issa Cissokho, whose saxophone presence here may well be worth the price of admission alone! But all other aspects are great, too – from the sharp-but-snakey guitar solos of Barthelemy Attiso, to the sonorous vocals of the group – sometimes inflected in more of an east African style, but which maybe also belie the group's roots in the crossroads city of Dakar. Titles include "Autorail", "Sibou Odia", "Sotante Xalat", "Bon Bon I", and "Ndiambaane". LP, Vinyl record album
(50th Anniversary limited edition pressing!)

✨✧ Shango Dance BandShango Dance Band ... CD
Comb & Razor, Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Insanely wonderful work from Shango Dance Band – a group headed by onetime Fela Kuti bandmate Ojo Okeji – whose bass work here is worth the price of admission alone! Okeji was a key part of Fela's Koola Lobitos, until leaving the group in 1968 – and taking some of the best players with him – to form the amazing Shango Dance Band, which is this incredible bridge between older Afro jazz modes and the new funk styles to explode in the 70s! At some level, the groove's a bit like that which Fela was percolating at the start of the 70s – but there's also some jazzier currents on the horn solos, especially the trumpet – and Okeji's bass is very far up in the mix – dipping, turning, and crafting these amazing grooves throughout – with a snakey vibe that's completely sublime – as is the entire record. And sure, there have been plenty of Afro Funk reissued on the market in the past decade or so – but few as essential as this one – or as enjoyable! Titles include "Position Pass Power", "Women Are Great", "Son Of Thunder", "Alupandu Gbe", and "I Need Your Love". CD

✨✧ Kamaal WilliamsReturn ... CD
Black Focus, 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first solo project from Kamaal Williams – and a wonderfully spiritual set that has the keyboardist really blowing us away with his talents! Williams plays plenty of Fender Rhodes on the set, mostly in a trio setting, but one that's far from standard jazz – as the rhythms often reflect his roots in hip hop, although played live by drummer Joshua McKenzie and bassist Pete Martin – who also have the ability to send Williams soaring to the skies with this magnificent spiritual energy! Consider this set to maybe be a Lonnie Liston Smith album for the hip hop generation – and praise Allah for Kamaal's mighty talents on the keys, and the sharp production skills of Henry Wu. Titles include "Salaam", "The Return", "High Roller", "Situations", "Rhythm Commission", "Catch The Loop", "Medina", and "LDN Shuffle". CD

✨✧ VariousAnn Arbor Blues Festival 1969 – Vol 1 ... LP
Third Man, 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The package alone is almost worth the price of admission – beautiful photographs of the event, detailed notes, and the first-ever release of this music – which has sat in the vaults for decades, finally to see the light of day. Titles on this first volume include "Dirty Mother For You" by Roosevelt Sykes, "So Glad You're Mine" by Arthur Big Boy Crudup, "Everybody Must Suffer/Stone Crazy" by Luther Allison & The Blue Nebulae, "Help Me" by Junior Wells, "I Wonder Why" by Jimmy Dawkins, "Too Much Alcohol" by JB Hutto & His Hawks, and "So Many Roads So Many Trains" by Otis Rush.
