✨✧ El AfrocomboPan Con Salsa (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Famoso/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
That's a mighty big loaf of bread on the cover – and there's a mighty big sound on the record as well – a fantastic blend of early 70s salsa modes from this very cooking little combo – served up in a blend of two saxes, two trumpets, and plenty of great percussion and piano! The group clearly draw plenty of inspiration from the New York scene – particularly that moment when the tight Latin soul combos of the late 60s were moving into salsa styles for the 70s – but there's also some other South American rhythms at work here too, although not enough to knock the album off its strongly salsa course. Jackie Carazo handles lead vocals – and titles include "El Huevo", "Pan Con Salsa", "Bomba Pa Los Cueros", "La Bailadora", "Mira Muneca", and "A La Fiesta Del Mar" – plus a great groovy cover of "Oye Como Va". Alain GoraguerLa Planete Sauvage – Original Soundtrack Recording (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Pathe/Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... On August 29, 2020
A totally excellent soundtrack! This is one of the maddest we've heard from the 70s – with a baroque mix of wah wah funk and sophisticated orchestrations, very much in the mode of work by David Axelrod or some of the backings heard on Serge Gainsbourg's best records. No surprise it's handled by Alain Gouraguer, a groovy Frenchman with a style that's a mix of the late 60s baroquery of Michel Columbier, and some of the smooth sexiness of the best Italian composers of his age. Great electric piano, wah wah guitar, and soaring strings – with a sound that's as odd as the cover! Titles include "Le Bracelet", "Deshominisation", "Mort De Draag", "La Femme", "Mira Et Ten", and "Ten Et Medor". LP, Vinyl record album

Audrey MorrisAfterthoughts ... LP
Fancy Faire, 1985. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A later date from Audrey Morris – the Chicago singer who's probably best remembered for some classic RCA sessions in the 50s, but who also kept on doing her own thing for decades later in the Windy City! The set's got a very old school feel – quite different than the usual 80s jazz set – very much in classic small combo vocal mode, with Audrey's lead accompanied by piano from Bruce Robins, and some occasional tenor from Stu Genovese. And although the set was issued on a small label, it's got a very professional approach – almost an attempt to go for the classic sound that bigger labels were doing with small singer sessions a few decades before. The song choices are great, and titles include "Nobody", "I'm A Dreamer Aren't We All", "My Silent Love", "Mira", "Rain Sometimes", "But I Loved You", and "Afterthoughts". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousChicano Power! – Latin Rock In The USA 1968-1976 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s-Mid 70s. Used 2CD ... $24.99
Nice one! This set's a great mix of Chicano grooves from the early 70's – and despite the "rock" in the title, the sound spans the gamut from jazz fusion, to Latin funk, to full on jamming! You may know some of the bands on the set – like Black Sugar, Sapo, and Azteca – from reissues or originals we've gotten in, but there's also a lot of groups that you'll have a darn hard time finding elsewhere. Like Soul Jazz's fantastic NuYorica sets, this one's an overstuffed set of material, filled with essential cuts that define a classic sound, and full notes on the music which are a treat to newcomers and old fans alike. Get set as Soul Jazz once again dig into the past, and come up with a soon-to-be-classic set of grooves that includes "Been Had" by Sapo, "Mira Pa Ca" by Chango, "Sun God" by Tierra, "Ron Con Con" by El Chicano, "Raomona" by Toro, "Viajecito" by Black Sugar, "Butterfly" by Benitez, and "Chauca" by The Antiques. Great stuff, great notes, and a real treat throughout! CD

✨✧ Rodrigo Amado with Peter EvansFreedom Principle ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title definitely lives up to the sound of the record – a really loose, free session from a quartet that includes strong work from both trumpeter Peter Evans and tenorist Rodrigo Amado – the latter of whom leads the group! All tracks are long, and build with a nice degree of energy – one that gets back to the "freedom principle" generation between the ESP and loft jazz years – when spontaneous creativity like this was really in action. All four members contribute equally to shape the sound of the performance – and the group also features Miguel Mira on cello and Garbirel Ferrandini on drums. Titles include "Pepper Packed", "Shadows", and "The Freedom Principle". CD

Columbia, 1986. Very Good+ ... $1.99
James D-Train Williams' first album for a major label – and a really great follow-up to the indie success of his initial recordings for Prelude Records! The style here is very similar to the clubby grooves of D-Train's earlier sides – thanks to strong keyboards, production, and songwriting help from Hubert Eaves – the jazzy talent who helped give Williams' his trademark groove! Instrumentation veers slightly more towards mainstream 80s soul at times, but the Eaves' sound is still very firmly in place here – and titles include the groovers "Oh How I Love You (Girl)", "Misunderstanding", and "Let Me Love You" – plus "You Are Everything", "I Got Your Number", "Stand Up & Fight", and "Miracle Of The Heart". Motown (Japan), 1975. Used ... $6.99
At the beginning of the 70s, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles parted company – and while to some, it might have looked like the group would flounder without the help of their famous leader, The Miracles hit the 70s wonderfully, and continued to grow tremendously as a group! Of course, part of that growth was due to the fact that Smokey had been replaced by singer Billy Griffin – who shared many of his talents, but also brought his own approach to the group. This concept record called City Of Angels, was their 4th, and probably most successful LP, with some smart production and nice arrangements from Freddie Perren and Wade Marcus. Includes "Night Life", "Love Machine", "Free Press", "Ain't Nobody Straight In LA", "Poor Charlotte", "Waldo Roderick DeHammersmith" and "Smog". CD

✨✧ Ismael Miranda con Orchestra HarlowAbran Paso! (remastered edition) ... CD
Fania, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The last album that Ismael Miranda cut with Orchestra Harlow – but an extremely strong effort that draws from all the great work they did together! Larry Harlow's still very firmly at the helm of the set – producing, arranging, and playing piano with the classic Orchestra Harlow lineup – but Miranda's vocals are a key focus of the album, stepping out proudly on a range of salsa themes that show a growing confidence in New York Latin for the 70s. One of the standout tracks is actually a Latin Soul groover with an earlier feel – the mighty "Rise Up", which features righteous soul lyrics in English, and plenty of great keyboard work alongside the percussion! Other tracks include Oigan Bien Mi Guaguanco", "Dolor Y Amor", "Abran Paso", "Se Casa La Rumba", and "Vengo Virao". CD

Smokey Robinson & The MiraclesGoing To A Go Go/Away We A Go Go ... CD
Motown, Mid 60s. Used ... $7.99
2 classics from Smokey Robinson – back to back on one CD! Both albums feature the group grooving in that hard mid 60s "go go" mode – with insanely wonderful lead vocals by Smokey, on a lot of tracks that are less familiar than the big hits, but still really really wonderful. Backing by the group is great, too – and the overall sound is extremely sweet harmony soul, with a perfect Motown set of arrangements behind the band. Titles include "Can You Love A Poor Boy", "Tracks Of My Tears", "Going To A Go Go", "Ooo Baby Baby", "Chosey Beggar", "Let Me Have Some", "A Fork In The Road", "My Girl Has Gone", "My Baby Changes Like The Weather", "From Head To Toe", "Baby Baby", "I'm The One You Need", "Save Me", "Oh Be My Love", and "Swept For You Baby". Reprise/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
A really wonderful little record – by a group who should have been much bigger than they were! Despite the fact that these guys are an obscure rock band with a silly name, the record's a perfect example of the subtly soulful work that was coming out of various west coast sources during the 70s – the kind of album-oriented work that yielded gems for play on underground FM radio, but which has been mostly lost to the shifting sands of time, save for some well-placed rescue in the reissue scene. The gem on this one is the smooth stepper "Fazon", but the album's got a few other nice ones too, with a jazzy tinge that's almost in debt to Mose Allison or Ben Sidran – that kind of cool blend of many elements with younger ideas that was bubbling up on the Bay Area scene. Titles include "Dancin Wizard", "Monkeys On the Moon", "Sneaky Smith", and "Astronaut Food". LP, Vinyl record album

Norman Weeks & RevelationsMiracles ... LP
Evergreen/High Jazz (Switzerland), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A fantastic mix of 70s soul and gospel – served up here by keyboardist Norman Weeks, who heads up a really strong group of singers on the set as well! Weeks plays Fender Rhodes, piano organ, and a range of other keyboards – and different singers take the lead on each track, including some really great female vocalists with a range that's amazing – trained in gospel, but also given a strong secular soul spin here by the way that Weeks sets up the arrangements. There's a few strong groovers on the set – and even the midtempo tracks pack a hell of a punch, with a sense of joy that resonates strongly throughout the entire set. Titles include "Living For Him", "It Took A Miracle", "I Got A Song In My Heart", "I Will Stand On It", "Being With You", and "I Wanna Sing For You". LP, Vinyl record album

Motown, Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest success stories of 70s soul – the rebirth of The Miracles after the departure of Smokey Robinson! Imagine this: you're in one of the first Motown soul groups, with loads of great recordings under your belt and a number one record in the charts – and then your lead singer and songwriter suddenly announces he's leaving! What do you do? Give it up? No! You search for a new voice, and find him in singer Billy Griffin – one of the best new talents to show up at Motown in the 70s, and a perfect voice to front the sublime harmonies the Miracles had been crafting for years. On this set, you'll hear 18 tracks that show the magic that Griffin and the Miracles made together – sublimely smooth soul handled by a variety of great producers and arrangers that include Freddie Perren, Hal Davis, James Carmichael, Gene Page, Willie Hutch, and Marvin Gaye. The sound is wonderful – one of the greatest new styles at Motown in the 70s – and this package does a great job of bringing out the best tracks from the group's 5 albums after Smokey. Loads and loads of mellow 70s harmony tracks – and titles include "Do It Baby", "I Love You Secretly", "Up Again", "Nowhere To Go", "I Didn't Realize The Show Was Over", "You Are Love", "Don't Cha Love It", "Give Me Just Another Day", "Gonna Tell The World", "Ain't Nobody Straight In LA", "Night Life", "Can I Pretend", and "Spy For Brotherhood". ✨✧ Jimmy WebbEl Mirage ... LP
Atlantic, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The songwriting of Jimmy Webb meets the studio genius of producer/arranger George Martin – for this one-off Atlantic album from 1977, a strange little set that almost has Jimmy sounding far older than his young years at the time! Martin's working in a style that follows nicely from Webb's earlier Land's End album – using full backings to color in the tunes with just the right shades and sounds to flesh them past Jimmy's vocals. But the unusual thing is the raspy, almost faltering quality of Jimmy's vocals – sung in a style that moves into his own words tentatively, as if he's rediscovering the lyrics after many years, or making them up on the spot. The mix of Webb's roughness and Martin's warmth makes the album more compelling than it might be otherwise – and titles include a version of Jimmy's classic "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress", plus "The Highwayman", "Christiaan No", "Moment In A Shadow", "Sugarbird", "Where The Universes Are", and "Mixed-Up Guy". ✨✧ ChangeEverything & More – The Complete Collection 1980 to 2019 (Glow Of Love/Miracles/Sharing Your Love/This Is Your Time/Change Of Heart/Turn On Your Radio/Love 4 Love) (7CD set) ... CD
Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

The playing throughout is spacious, even it's most full moments never gets too busy, with a deep spiritual quality, clear through the themes he chooses in the titles: "Evolution On The Life Of Moses", "Saint Michael Servant Of The Lord" and "Imagined Dance For Solo Bass". Edigsa/Wah Wah (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare set of Spanish jazz from the 60s – quite a treasure, considering how little jazz we've heard from Spain at the time! The group's tremendous – soulful and modern, at a level that matches some of our favorite Italian combos of the same period – with this strong lead work from Ricard Roda on alto sax and flute, and these beautiful lines on piano from Ricard Miralles – both players we don't know at all, but who really shine in the live setting of the album! The group also features bold bass from Enric Ponsa and drums from Joan-Josep Tuduri – and the group clearly have a love of the modal tendencies that hit American jazz at the end of the 50s, particularly in the work of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Titles include Miralles own "Asteriscs" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Kelly Blue", "Theme For Ernie", "Stella By Starlight", and "On Green Dolphin Street". Album also features the bonus track "Solar". LP, Vinyl record album

A cracker of a set from 60s Colombia – a record that certainly has plenty of the cumbias promised in the title, but which also features other lively grooves in a guaracha, charanga, and montuno style! The rhythms are upbeat throughout, and recorded in a great way that really gets at all the subtle inflections in the various percussion elements – which are mixed with hard-driving piano, occasional accordion, and vocals that really work hard to keep up with the groove! Legendary stuff from Smokey Robinson and his wonderful group – a killer set from the second all-male version of The Miracles – recorded with some wonderfully soaring harmonies! The group's got a nice bite on the bottom here – a groove to go with the "go go" promised in the title – at a level that made these Miracles really take off on Motown dancefloors, yet still also have the late nite appeal of the earlier group too. The album includes the big hit dance number "Going To A Go Go", the classic ballad "Tracks Of My Tears", and loads of other wonderful numbers like "Ooo Baby Baby", "Let Me Have Some", "All That's Good", and "My Girl Has Gone". Savoy (Japan), 1957. Used ... $14.99
During the late 50s – after an initial burst of recordings with Blue Note, and before a later successful run for the label – Art Blakey recorded on a number of labels with a lesser-known version of The Jazz Messengers. This album's from that stretch – and like others from the period it's a darn nice batch of tracks, and while it lacks some of the polished tightness of the later Blue Notes it crackles with the energy that's been the Jazz Messengers trademark from day one. The group features Bill Hardman on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, and Sam Dockery on piano – and the set's a loose batch of hardbop numbers like "Casino", "Ugh!", "Mirage", "The Biddie Griddies", "Potpourri" and "Reflections Of Buhania". On-U Sound, 1977/1978. Used ... $11.99
Early, early Creation Rebel, from the late 70s, but still produced under the supervision of Adrian Sherwood. This CD brings together the LPs Dub From Creation and Rebel Vibrations, when the group was still working as Prince Far I's backing band, and has a pretty stripped down, and somewhat less spacey approach than some of their other dub LPs. Mostly crisp drum and bass workouts, with tasty bits of guitar, melodica and keyboards floating in and out of the mix, and some nice Sherwood style touches on the dub effects, 16 tracks in all. Includes "Dub From Creation", "Basic Principles", "Creation In A Iration", "Mirage", "Vision Of Creation", "Jungle Affair", "Diverse Doctor", "Mountain Melody" and "Black Lion". CD

A bold step forward for the team of Patrick Forge and Chris Franck – the first Da Lata album in years, and a real departure from the past! The group's still clearly inspired by older Brazilian tunes, but they've also opened their groove up to a much more global horizon – taking on influences from African and Caribbean sources, and working in a style that has a much more organic feel overall. Vocalists on the set include Jhelisa, Baaba Maal, Nina Miranda, and Mamani Keita – and the tracks are awash in some great instrumental touches that include accordion, acoustic guitar, timbales, bells, and tres – in addition to the group's usual mix of samples, keys, and beats! Discos De Planta/Wah Wah (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The debut album from Uruguayan singer Diane Denoir – served up with heavy help from Eduardo Mateo of the legendary group El Kinto! Like Mateo's work, the music here is a bit beyond easy comparison – in a rock or pop structure, but with lots of deeper ideas too – a bit like the changes in the post-1968 underground in Paris, where more sophisticated styles of songwriting and arrangement really led the way past simpler pop of the previous decades. Mateo handles some of the arrangements – with Gustavo Beytelmann and Alberto Nunez Palacio too – and the music is full of beautiful elements that resonate strongly with the voice, in complex genre-stepping modes that bridge a space between late 60s A&M and Island Records. Titles include "El Adios", "Quisiera", "Las Flores Nuevas", "Y Hoy Te Vi", "Los Hijos De Don Manuel", "Esa Tristeza", "Jacinta", and "Mirate Los Ojos". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ernie Hawks & The Soul InvestigatorsScorpio Man (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timmion (Finland), 2018. New Copy ... About August 28, 2020
Ernie Hawks looks right out of the 70s on the cover – with his long hair, fringe jacket, and fiercely-held flute – which he mixes here with some great grooves from the Soul Investigators, in a vibe that's maybe even better than classic! The album's all instrumental, and has this fantastic sound that's way different than the usual contemporary funk set – nicely trippy at times, with echo and other effects applied to the instrumentation – and a strong ear for the overall sound, not just the power of each member of the group! Hawks is often out front, soloing with a funky flute sound – but he also handles vibes, pianoman, and trombone – in a very cool lineup that also has Martti Vesala on wah-wah trumpet, and Jimi Tenor on saxophone. All tunes are original, and they're really fantastic – each the kind that if you found on a rare soundtrack or lost jazz album, you'd be willing to pay plenty to own. GEC/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The classic first LP by this stellar Chicago harmony group – and a monster! Heaven & Earth had a wonderful falsetto harmony sound that reminds us a lot of east coast winners like Blue Magic or The Stylistics – and like some of the best east coast groups, this group's vocals work equally well on slow ballads or faster uptempo numbers, both of which are handled extremely well on the record by producer Clarence Johnson. The bulk of the arrangements on the record were done by Tom Tom 84 – one of Chicago's true soul geniuses, and in perfect form on this record. The whole thing's amazingly well put together for an indie soul group album – and is a sure indication of the group's later fame on Mercury. Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
One of our favorite albums ever on the legendary Nimbus label – and the only set we've ever seen from pianist Linda Hill as a leader! The set's got the same open-ended, spiritually-expressive sound as Adele Sebastian's record for the label – and Sebastian's also a key part of the group, working here on vocal and flute, to give the album a richly righteous sound! The vocals are great, and often feature help from Jugeger Juan Grey – with more soul than usual for this sort of set, but still plenty of jazz elements too – with an offbeat quality that's almost like Oneness Of Juju – often used just to lead off a tune, before the solos come in strongly. Other musicians include Sabir Matteen on tenor, Roberto Miranda on bass, Everett Brown on drums, and Virjilio Figuera on percussion. A wicked 80s groove from the mighty Ingram Family! Ingram were one of those groups that actually got better as they got slicker – and by the time of this 1983 release, Butch, James, and William Ingram had had more than enough experience working together and with other artists to really forge a strong sophisticated soul sound. The record's a lot better than many of its group-soul contemporaries' – and it's more of an extension of a 70s harmony group style than it is a throwaway 80s group funk album. The songwriting's a notch above what you'd expect – and the overall soul component is very high. Posthumous releases by favorite departed figures can be a dicey proposition – and much to our relief, Rebirth Of Detroit delivers – with both high quality beats & rhymes, and positive mojo! Linda JonesHypnotized ... LP
Loma, Late 60s. Very Good ... $44.99
One of the greatest female singers on the east coast scene at the end of the 60s – heard here on a classic Warner Brothers set that includes some of her best-remembered tracks! At some level, the set's a prequel to Linda's later recordings for the Stang/All Platinum label – as it features production and arrangements by the great George Kerr – who really has a way with slow-moving soul tunes, and the kind of sad-tinged tracks that Jones always did so well! Plus, his raw production really brings out some of the deeper soul qualities in Linda's voice – a mode that's quite a surprise at times, and presented here in a way that's far beyond any of the Aretha Franklin-styled cliches of other singers. Jones is a tremendously unique talent in female soul, and this album's her lasting legacy – a true treasure with cuts that include the hit "Hypnotized", plus loads of other nice ones like "Last Minute Miracle", "Give My Love A Try", "You Can't Take It", "What've I Done", and "I Can't Stand It". The rhythms are quite right on most numbers – never too stiff, and never too overdone – often with just a hint of jazz at the bottom – and vocals are delivered lightly, wrapped around the beats, keys, and riffs with a slightly subtle edge. Possibly the greatest album ever from the enigmatic Lloyd Miller – his legendary Oriental Jazz album from the late 60s, and a really wonderful blend of musical modes! Some of the tracks here really stretch out in the Eastern promise of the title – mixing jazz rhythms with santur, oud, zarb, and other unusual instrumentation – all in ways that are modal one minute, meditative the next, and which even echo gamelan styles on one tune! Other tracks are a bit straighter in the instrumentation, but still sparkle with a globe's worth of influence – Lloyd on piano, carving out sounds in a very unusual way! Some tracks are by Miller's trio, other by a quartet that features him, but which is led by pianist/trombonist Press Keys. Titles include "Hue Wail", "Pentalogic", "Tanya", "Natanie", "Guzel Gozler", "Prelude In The Iranian Mode Shur", "Impression Of Bhairava Raga", and "Njonja Mirah & Yona". Motown/Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
A real lost gem from Motown – and a whole lot more! Greetings! We're The Monitors is the only full album ever cut by The Monitors – a 3-man, 1-woman vocal group who were in a popular Motown mixed harmonies mode. The quartet had a wonderfully strong vocal presence – blasting away at most tracks with a strength that groups like The Miracles or Gladys Knight & The Pips could never match – and like those groups, they bridge that key period between late doo wop-oriented harmonies, and tighter 60s group soul. The LP brings together singles the Monitors cut for Motown during the previous few years, but it also works extremely well as a unified album – and it's a refreshing change from some of the oft-heard Motown material. Titles include "Greetings (This Is Uncle Sam)", "Number One In Your Heart", "Bring Back The Love", "Step By Step (Hand In Hand)", and "Baby Make Your Own Sweet Music". This incredible anthologogy from Kent starts off with that album and includes 12 unissued tracks – a whole album's worth – plus 2 B-Sides. Only 3 of the album's 8 tracks feature Astrud on vocals – but those are all pretty great – and on the other instrumental numbers, Shigeharu steps out with the band on some great tracks that have a tasy Brazilian jazz approach – one that alternates between electric Brazilian fusion numbers, and others that have an earthier percussive bottom. Titles include the vocal numbers "Champagne & Caviar", "Nos Dois", and "Hold Me" – and the instrumentals "Berimbau", "Miracle Of The Fishes", "Terrafirme", and "Keep On Riding". Morris NantonFlower Drum Song ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1958. Used ... $11.99
A completely fresh take on tunes from the show Flower Drum Song – done here all as trio numbers by pianist Morris Nanton, who handles the music with a lot more sensitive spin than the lyrical versions! Nanton's got this full, rich tone at this point in his career – a well-punctuated approach to piano that often draws strongly from the efforts of his left hand – but in a subtle way that still lets the right really take off in some warm flurries of notes! Nanton's got a surprisingly groovy sound throughout – and titles include "Sunday", "A Hundred Million Miracles", "Chop Suey", "I Am Going To Like It Here", and "Love Look Away". CD

David NewmanBigger & Better ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1968. Used ... $6.99
One of the best David Newman albums for Atlantic from the 60s – and one that breaks past the R&B-influenced formula of earlier albums! This one features some great arrangements by William Fischer, the cool wild-card arranger who was to late 60s Atlantic what David Axelrod was to Capitol at the same time. Fischer's touch isn't exactly funky – but it's certainly far-reaching, as he sets up David's funky tenor and flute in some very hip arrangements that mix together horns, strings, and soul production, in a mode that provides some of the best backings that Newman's ever had to solo over – a favor he returns admirably in his playing on the album! Includes the cool psychedelic number "The Thirteenth Floor", Eddie Harris-ish readings of "And I Love Her" and "Yesterday", and versions of Sam Cooke's "Ain't That Good News" and "A Change Is Gonna Come". QuantGetting Out ... CD
Ecco Chamber (Austria), 2004. Used ... $3.99
Slyly funky grooves from Quant – downtempo with a difference – the difference being that things are pretty darn soulful overall, with enough jazzy imagination to keep things sounding fresh throughout! About half the tracks feature lead vocals by a variety of singers – done in a style that's never too over the top, and which mixes nicely with the grooves – in a mode that's reminiscent of some of the best soundsystem work from London in recent years. A surprising treat – with tracks that include "Come & Go", "Babu", "Miracle Man", "Never Thought That", "Getting Up", "Get Off My Line", "Tryin", and "Self Control". CD

David SanchezCarib ... LP
Melaza/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
David Sanchez kicks off the album's liner notes with a great discussion on the African diaspora and its influence on music – one that's always been strongly felt in David's recordings, but which seems to come through even more strongly here! The record's definitely jazz, but borrows lots of rhythmic conceptions from around the globe – using a fair bit of percussion at the bottom of the sound, which is balanced nicely with strong, soulful tenor lines from Sanchez, waves of color on the guitar from Lage Lund, and a mix of piano and Fender Rhodes from Luis Perdomo! There's some especially great interplay between the angularity of the tenor and the warmer, rounder currents of the guitar – on titles that include "Madigra", "Wave Under Silk", "Mirage", "Fernando's Theme", "Canto", "Land Of The Hills", and "Iwa". ShannonLet The Music Play ... LP
Mirage/Atco, 1984. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A pop dancefloor classic – built around Shannon's killer club hit "Let The Music Play", as guilty a guilty pleasure as there ever was for us, and a tune that we can't help liking even today! Other tracks on the set have a similar punchy electro groove – lots of beats popping underneath, and sweetly soulful vocals from Shannon over the top. Electro programming is by Rob Kilgore and Chris Barbosa – and titles include "Let The Music Play", "Sweet Somebody", "My Heart's Divided", and "One Man". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ShannonLove Goes All The Way ... LP
Mirage/Atlantic, 1986. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet pop soul from the lovely Shannon – a record that's not nearly as well-remembered as her debut, thanks to the lack of a title hit – but which still follows very strongly in its shoes! As before, there's plenty of blasting beats at the bottom of the mix here – not ones to hit you over the head, but still served up in that burst of sound that was the mainstream take on the Art Of Noise sound from a few years before. Shannon's vocals are bold enough to work well with this approach – and while the overall style isn't totally Trevor Horn at its best, it is a great illustration of his legacy on 80s grooves – served up by one of its more dynamic divas! Titles include "Dancin", "Sabotage My Heart", "Prove Me Right", "Faces In The Crowd", "You Blew", and "You Put A Spark In My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Soul GenerationBeyond Body & Soul ... CD
Ebony Sound/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A masterpiece of east coast vocal group soul – one of the best independent harmony albums of the early 70s! Soul Generation had a fantastic approach – a style that was both sweet and tough at the same time, done with slight gangster/pimp touches that set them apart from some of the other more fragile groups of their era. The album's produced and arranged to perfection by Stan Vincent – and nearly every single cut on the record is an instant classic. Starts out with the incredible "Super Fine" – one of our favorite harmony tracks of all time – then rolls into "That's The Way It's Got To Be (Body & Soul)", "Black Man", "Black Man", "Million Dollars", and "In Your Way". CD features 4 bonus tracks too – "Mandingo Woman", "I Wonder What She's Doin", "Key To Your Heart", and "Praying For A Miracle". CD

✨✧ Steely DanRoyal Scam ... LP
ABC, 1976. Sealed ... $29.99
My god, what a record! This one's genius through and through – a set that sometimes gets eclipsed in the brilliance to come, but which is easily one of our favorites ever by Steely Dan! There's a beautifully focused feel here – thanks to Donald Fagan's incredible lead vocals, and a sense of songwriting that never takes any left turns – no odd forays into different styles or previous genres, just all steeped in Steely, as the group should be by this point! John Klemmer turns in some wonderful sax work that really helps shape the sound, and titles include the wonderful "Caves Of Altimira", "Kid Charlemagne", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Green Earrings", and "The Royal Scam". ✨✧ StrokeStroke ... CD
Mirage/FTG (France), 1985. Used ... $14.99
The bass gets plenty of stroke on this mid 80s set – a record that hangs somewhere between 80s groove and Prince-era funk – but with a bit of quiet storm feel at times too! The tunes are pretty lean, not nearly as excessive as they could be – and often, a key instrumental element really helps set the scene from the start – making for a simple, but effective hook into a song. Overall, Stroke's got a sound that's a lot classier than their name – definitely one of those 80s groups that should have risen a lot higher than some of the bigger chart acts of the era. Titles include "All Night", "Take Me Back", "Tell Me", "Uptown", "Just Let Me Luv You", and "Stroke". CD
