Afro Blues Quintet Plus OneNew Directions ... LP
Mira, Late 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
Great work by one of the grooviest groups on the LA 60s scene! The Afro Blues Quintet have a blend of soul jazz and Latin styles that's similar to the best 60s work by Cal Tjader, or to records by small combos like the Quartette Tres Bien or The Latin Jazz Quintet. Lots of grooves have a nice modal swing to them – nice and jazzy, with slight touches of soulful instrumentation, all fused into a tight Latin-styled groove. Loads of great original tunes – including "Mystic Mambo", "Freaks", "Incantations", "Victims Of Chance", "Let My People Go", and "Afro Rock". LP, Vinyl record album

Mira/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $9.99
Vietnam was a terrible war, but it did give the world some fantastic songs – like this raw, gritty number from Bobby Jameson – a tune that's clearly a takeoff on the Bo Diddley style of rhythm, but which has a much more powerful message! Drums are pounding and full of echo, cut through by this searing harmonica line, then beat by Bobby's own vocals! The instrumental is great too – with an even greater focus on the bassline and harmonica. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Alain GoraguerLa Planete Sauvage – Original Soundtrack Recording ... LP
Pathe/Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A totally excellent soundtrack! This is one of the maddest we've heard from the 70s – with a baroque mix of wah wah funk and sophisticated orchestrations, very much in the mode of work by David Axelrod or some of the backings heard on Serge Gainsbourg's best records. No surprise it's handled by Alain Gouraguer, a groovy Frenchman with a style that's a mix of the late 60s baroquery of Michel Columbier, and some of the smooth sexiness of the best Italian composers of his age. Great electric piano, wah wah guitar, and soaring strings – with a sound that's as odd as the cover! Titles include "Le Bracelet", "Deshominisation", "Mort De Draag", "La Femme", "Mira Et Ten", and "Ten Et Medor". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful reissue pressing – with heavy vinyl and cover!)

JJ JohnsonJJ's Broadway ... LP
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- ... $9.99
JJ's Broadway is a-ok with us – a hip mix of small group tunes, played with the great Walter Perkins on drums, and handled with a much more complicated approach than most other "jazz meets Broadway" type albums! About half the tracks feature a quartet with Perkins on drums, plus Hank Jones piano and Richard Davis on bass – and these numbers really swing with a wonderful open-ended groove. The rest of the set has a larger group with Jones, Perkins, and Chuck Israels on bass – plus additional trombones behind the solo work of Johnson. Titles include "Nobody's Heart", "A Second Chance", "Sleeping Bee", "Mira", "Lovely", and "Who Will Buy". LP, Vinyl record album

Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A cracker of a set from 60s Colombia – a record that certainly has plenty of the cumbias promised in the title, but which also features other lively grooves in a guaracha, charanga, and montuno style! The rhythms are upbeat throughout, and recorded in a great way that really gets at all the subtle inflections in the various percussion elements – which are mixed with hard-driving piano, occasional accordion, and vocals that really work hard to keep up with the groove! Titles include "Cumbia De Sol", "Noche Y Cumbia", "Lelogua", "Cumbia De Estrellas", "Moler La Cana", "Mensaje Guajiro", "Gaita Turca", and "La Pompita". LP, Vinyl record album

D TrainMiracles Of The Heart (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Expansion (UK), 1986. Used ... $4.99
James D-Train Williams' first album for a major label – and a really great follow-up to the indie success of his initial recordings for Prelude Records! The style here is very similar to the clubby grooves of D-Train's earlier sides – thanks to strong keyboards, production, and songwriting help from Hubert Eaves – the jazzy talent who helped give Williams' his trademark groove! Instrumentation veers slightly more towards mainstream 80s soul at times, but the Eaves' sound is still very firmly in place here – and titles include the groovers "Oh How I Love You (Girl)", "Misunderstanding", and "Let Me Love You" – plus "You Are Everything", "I Got Your Number", "Stand Up & Fight", and "Miracle Of The Heart". CD also features 4 bonus tracks from singles – 12" mixes of "Misunderstanding" and "Oh How I Love You Girl" – plus "You Are Everything (acapella)" and "Oh How I Love You Girl (inst)". CD

Released in the same year as City Of Angels, this set was also produced by Freddie Perren, and shares the same polished feel to the groove that he provided on that outing, but without the big chart hits. Overall, it's still a fine effort, with Billy Grifffin admirably filling in for the departed Smokey Robinson, though not as strong as the group's first couple LPs without Smokey. 10 tracks in all, including "Keep On Keepin On (Doin What You Do)", "Sweet Sweet Lovin", "Don't Cha Love It", "Gemini" and 'You Are Love". A great rare, early album by The Miracles – one you almost never see on wax! The album features the group back when they still had a female member, who gives the band a beautiful high harmony sound in tandem with Smokey Robinson's falsetto vocals. A classic early Detroit soul record from Smokey with 10 tracks in all, including "You've Really Got A Hold On Me", "Your Love", "A Love She Can Count On", "I Can Take A Hint", and "Such Is Love, Such Is Life". ✨✧ Ismael Miranda con Orchestra HarlowAbran Paso! (remastered edition) ... CD
Fania, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The last album that Ismael Miranda cut with Orchestra Harlow – but an extremely strong effort that draws from all the great work they did together! Larry Harlow's still very firmly at the helm of the set – producing, arranging, and playing piano with the classic Orchestra Harlow lineup – but Miranda's vocals are a key focus of the album, stepping out proudly on a range of salsa themes that show a growing confidence in New York Latin for the 70s. One of the standout tracks is actually a Latin Soul groover with an earlier feel – the mighty "Rise Up", which features righteous soul lyrics in English, and plenty of great keyboard work alongside the percussion! Other tracks include Oigan Bien Mi Guaguanco", "Dolor Y Amor", "Abran Paso", "Se Casa La Rumba", and "Vengo Virao". CD

An amazing moment – both in American theater and music – the groundbreaking original production of Hamilton – written by and starring the wonderful Lin-Manuel Miranda, a man who's intent on completely transforming the American cultural landscape! The soundtrack is very fittingly issued by Atlantic Records – given the strong undercurrent of soul and hip hop in the music – as Miranda opens up the true story of Alexander Hamilton in a surprisingly effective blend of beats, rhymes, and larger orchestrations! Miranda himself plays the lead character, in a setting that also features great vocal performances by Leslie Odom Jr, Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs, and others – all served up in this lavish package that contains all the musical performances from the original production. Although Smokey and crew are pictured in the front in the usual staid Motown matching suits – their hipper garb on the back cover belies the nice direction they've taken with this album, which shows the band hitting a more heavy soul style that's touched by a lot of the grooviness going around at the time at Motown. Legendary stuff from Smokey Robinson and his wonderful group – a killer set from the second all-male version of The Miracles – recorded with some wonderfully soaring harmonies! The group's got a nice bite on the bottom here – a groove to go with the "go go" promised in the title – at a level that made these Miracles really take off on Motown dancefloors, yet still also have the late nite appeal of the earlier group too. Deniece WilliamsGonna Take A Miracle – The Best Of Deniece Williams ... CD
Columbia, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $3.99
An amazing evolution in sound – a set that brings together the shifting styles of Deniece Williams during her Columbia years – a stretch when she started out as a righteous-voiced singer with an almost Minnie Riperton-like sound, then moved into much more chart-topping territory for the early 80s! Throughout it all, though, Williams' vocals remained top-shelf – trained not only through years of gospel singing, but also through an early music career that had her recording indie singles in Chicago, and working as a backup singer for Stevie Wonder. The package does a good job of bringing together most of Williams' significant cuts from the Columbia years – 16 tracks that include "Free", "I Found Love", "Cause You Love Me Baby", "That's What Friends Are For", "God Is Amazing", "Baby Baby My Love's All For You", "When Love Comes Calling", "If You Don't Believe", "Silly", "It's Gonna Take A Miracle", "Waiting", "Do What You Feel", "Black Butterfly", "Too Much Too Little Too Late", and "Let's Hear It For The Boy". Columbia, 1971. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous album from Laura Nyro – a real return to the soulful style of her roots, thanks to help from Labelle on backing vocals, and the team of Gamble & Huff on production! If Nyro only ever gave the world this record, that would more than be enough – because the whole thing's an incredibly hip blend of her own great songwriting and some of the more righteous strands of American soul music at the time. Most of the tracks are older soul numbers – some done relatively straight, others done with the more personal, contemplative style you'd expect from Nyro during these years. And decades before Amy Winehouse or Joss Stone started hitting territory like this, Nyro proved that a set of soul tracks like this could come off well, if handled with the right talent! A pair of incredible mid 60s girl group soul sets from The Royalettes – It's Gonna Take A Miracle and Elegant Sound Of The Royalettes, plus a trip of great bonus tracks – their complete sessions for MGM in a single set! It's Gonna Take A Miracle Some is some of the best uptown girl group soul you'll ever find, and a nice bit of Big City production by Teddy Randazzo. The album includes their classic "It's Gonna Take A Miracle", plus lots of other nice ones with the same sort of mellow groove. Titles include "Don't You Cry", "Poor Boy", "You Bring Me Down", "Never Again", "Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind", and "I Want To Meet Him". Elegant Sound Of The Royalettes is another killer batch of track – featuring more original compositions, arrangements, and production work by the great Teddy Randazzo. Teddy did some of his best work with The Royalettes – and forged a style that was sophisticated and classy, yet in different ways than some of the blander attempts by labels like Motown. The record's got a huge amount of tracks for a major label release from the time, and titles include "Baby Are You Putting Me On", "It's Better Not To Know", "Can't Stop Running Away", "Rest Of My Life", "Forever More", "Think Before You Act", and "I Don't Want To Be The One". Hat & Beard, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest books we've ever seen on The Velvet Underground – and one that definitely lives up to the promise of the title! The volume brings together interviews, essays, and other material over the space of the group's career, and beyond – but all mixed with vintage images, artwork, and other unusual visual elements – so that the whole thing almost feels as if it was put together by Warhol as a way to document and present the group! The book features essays and writings by Tony Conrad, Jonas Mekas, Allen Ginsberg, and members of the group – including Lou Reed, John Cale, and Sterling Morrison – and also includes side-steps on contemporaries and influences as well. 216 pages, hardcover, with images in color and black and white. ✨✧ Sexteto MiramarSalsa Mi Hermana (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Sexteto Miramar are putting plenty of salsa on their seafood on the cover – and they're also putting plenty in their music, too – as they work with a tight combo mode that owes a lot to the Joe Cuba Sextet of the mid 60s, and which also borrows a bit of Latin Soul from the New York scene too! The percussion is great throughout, and there's lots of vibes on the record too – which gives the whole thing the jazzy sophistication of some of Louie Ramirez's best recordings of the 60s, as the vibes ring out to color the grooves in all these wonderful ways! The whole record's got this lively small group feel that's right up there with the best mid 60s work on Fania, Cotique, and Alegre – and titles include "El Invierno", "El Gato", "Mambo Flamenco", "Salsa Boogaloo", "Mi Hermana", "Aprietame", and "Cuando Sali De Cuba". ✨✧ MiraclesLove Crazy ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The Miracles move to Columbia Records – and pick up a whole new groove in the process – a much richer sound than previous records on Motown, with a soaring style that really works great for the harmonies! Billy Griffin's vocals are really coming into their own – as is his songwriting, too – evidenced by some of the more complicated elements in the mix, and the blend of full arrangements and tight rhythms that almost have a Philly feel overall! The change is a great one for the group – and not only helps them beat some of their best late Motown moments, but also points the way towards a heck of a lot of 80s soul too. Titles include "Too Young", "The Bird Must Fly Away", "Love Crazy", "Spy For Brotherhood", "A Better Way To Life", "Women", and the Isley-like "I Can Touch The Sky". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked groover from The Miracles – a late 70s set for Columbia Records, and one that's got a sparkling sound throughout! The album really has the group hitting some great modern soul modes for the set – arrangements by David Foster that push them forward even more, and which work equally well on the uptempo tunes as they do on the few mellower numbers too. The style is lush, but never overdone – just right for the vocal interplay of the group, with a quality that's a bit like late 70s Jacksons – but better. Titles include "Love Doctor", "I Can't Stand It", "Hot Dance", "Mean Machine", "Sad Rain", "Reach For The Sky", and "The Magic Of Your Eyes". CD

Rhino/Atlantic, 1970s. Used ... $7.99
One of the biggest crossover funk groups of all time – and when the smoke finally cleared, they were actually pretty darn good musicians! AWB's right up there with Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire for sheer pop 70s funkiness – and despite what you might think about a bunch of white guys noodling around like they're soul stars, you can't argue with classics like "Pick Up The Pieces", "Person To Person", "Cut The Cake", "Schoolboy Crush", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "A Love Of Your Own", and "Work To Do" – all of which are on this set! There's a total of 18 cuts in all, and other titles include "You Got It", "Queen Of My Soul", "Got The Love", "Soul Searching", and "Your Love Is A Miracle". CD

Average White BandWarmer Communications/Benny & Us ... CD
Sony, 1977/1978. Used 2CD ... $14.99
In case you don't get the joke, the title's a play on the fact that Atlantic Records had just been acquired by Warner Communications – now fully a major label at the end of the 70s! That fact doesn't stop the album from being a good one, though – and AWB work here with Arif Mardin on a set of tunes that still have a fair bit of the funky touches of earlier records, but which also go for a few mellower tunes too – of the sort that were becoming the group's strongest suit at the time. "She's A Dream" is a great example of this style – a nicely gliding number that still has a nice groove at the bottom – and while the set doesn't include any standout hits, it's still a great example of why AWB could pull off this sort of record a lot better than most of their contemporaries! Titles include "She's A Dream", "Warmer Communications", "Price Of The Dream", "Sweet & Sour", "One Look Over My Shoulder", "Your Love Is A Miracle", and "Same Feeling Different Song". On Benny & Us, Ben E King joins the Average White Band for this sweet 70s set – a killer record that not only stands as one of King's best efforts of the decade, but one that also gives the group a great new frontman! Ben's not the only singer on the record, but his presence here can definitely be felt – deepening up the grooves nicely, and giving the already-great AWB sound an even more badass feel! Titles include the classic "Star In The Ghetto", a funky remake of "What Is Soul", an earlier hit for King – plus "Keepin It To Myself", "Imagine", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Get It Up For Love", and "The Message". One of Ruben Blades' key crossover efforts of the 80s – and an album that has him stepping far from the salsa ghetto of the 70s, into a much wider range of styles! Most of the lyrics here are in English – as on other Blades from the time – and although the instrumentation echoes some Latin styles, there's also a more contemporary pop approach going on too. The album includes some songwriting contributions from Lou Reed, Sting, and Elvis Costello – and titles include "Chameleons", "Shamed Into Love", "In Salvador", "The Calm Before The Storm", "The Miranda Syndrome", "Letters To The Vatican", "I Can't Say", and "The Hit". Art BlakeyHoliday For Skins Vol 1 ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... $14.99
The rarest of all of Art Blakey's percussion group projects – and quite possibly the best, too! The session features Blakey at the head of a strong mix of jazz and percussion players – with Art Taylor and Philly Joe Jones on the regular drum kit, Donald Byrd on trumpet and Ray Bryant on piano, and a host of assorted percussion work by the likes of Ray Barretto, Sabu Martinez, Victor Gonzalez, Julio Martinez, and others. The resultant sound is incredible – very full, rich, and earthy – and done in a way that interweaves African and Latin percussion styles with straighter American jazz! A few cuts have chanting by Blakey and Sabu – and titles on this first volume include "The Feast", "Mirage", "Lamento Africano", and "Aghano". CD

The legendary Bobby Bradford is alive and well – and sounding especially amazing here in the company of saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh – who brings some global elements to the music that we never would have heard from Bobby back in the 70s! The performance is a live one, and has all four group members really shining in the company of each other – including bassist Roberto Miguel Miranda, who you may remember for his classic material on Nimbus Records on the LA scene at the end of the 70s! Turns out, Miranda's a live and well here – and adds a fantastic soulful current to the proceedings – next to the drums of Vijay Anderson, the cornet of Bradford, and Modirzadeh's very evocative soprano sax – which is sometimes augmented by work on karna and khaen. Soulful fusion from The Brecker Brothers – a set that's one of their standout efforts from the 70s – and a record that went onto influence a whole generation of jazz musicians too! The album features the twin horns of Randy & Michael Brecker, along with alto by David Sanborn, keyboards by Don Grolnick, and guitar by Steve Khan – but one of the things that really makes the album great is the vocal arrangements, which were handled by Luther Vandross, who also sings on the album along with Patti Austin! The set's got a great soulful feel – with some wonderful mellow groovers that have a sweet 70s sound – titles that include "Lovely Lady", "Night Flight", "Slick Stuff", "What A Miracle Can Do", "I Love Wastin Time With You", "Keep It Steady", "Grease Piece", and "Dig A Little Deeper". Cadet, 1967. Very Good ... $9.99
One of the best of Odell Brown's groovy organ jazz albums for Cadet from the late 60's. His groovy little combo – which features Artee "Duke" Payne on sax, Tommy Purvis on tenor, Phil Upchurch on bass, and Master Henry Gibson on conga – grooves nicely through short "combo" oriented organ cuts like "Get Off My Back", "Mirar, Mirar", "She's Coming My Way", "Tough Tip", and "No More Water In The Well". They play with a mix of funkiness and virtuosity, and with the same sense of humor as contemporary groups like the Jack McDuff quartet or Young-Holt Unlimited. Mirage/Omni, 1986. Very Good ... $0.99
Quite a different sound than Jean's Philly International recordings – although certainly a logical extension – and it's a sweeter than sweet set from the mid 80s that in turns both celebrates and transcends the production style of the era! Overall, Closer Than Close is a smooth batch of mellow modern soul, almost in a Phyllis Hyman mode, and with less of the free easy jazz touches of Jean's earlier recordings. Grover Washington produced most of the record, an he really does add a bit of jazz into the mix – but the standout element is Jean's vocals, which seem to have expanded their range along with the addition of the "e" to her last name! Titles include "Lucky Charm", "Closer than Close", "Everything Must Change", "Sexy Eyes", "It Must Be Love", and a solid remake of "Break Up To Make Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Richly complicated work from reedman John Carter – working here at a level that's a great change from his smaller combo work of the early years! Carter plays clarinet throughout – at the head of an octet with a very cerebral feel – a group who almost bring more of a serious music sort of style into play at times, yet still have enough jazz-based energy in their work too. The approach is a bit like that of Muhal Richard Abrams or Henry Threadgill – but the set also has a definite LA underground bent too, thanks to work by Bobby Bradford on cornet, Red Callender on tuba, James Newton on flutes, Charles Owen on soprano sax, Roberto Miranda on bass, William Jeffrey on drums, and Luis Peralta on waterphone and percussion. A catchy bass heavy number with serious dancefloor appeal that doesn't sacrifice any of it's slick modern soul production, in our opinion, the best cut off Change's sophomore LP, Miracles, when the group was still working in a post disco, 80s groove mode that didn't betray the fact that they were largely a studio creation. 7-inch, Vinyl record

The Elgins were a great little group on Motown's VIP label during the 60s – and they had a sweet falsetto soul style that reminds us a lot of the best work by The Miracles during the same time. Lead singer Saundra Edwards has a style that's similar to Smokey Robinson's high vocals – and the heavy production by the Holland/Dozier team provides a nice counterpoint to keep the lyrics from getting too sickly sweet. The style here is very much in the spirit of the group's roots – long tracks that spin out with plenty of space for all the collaboration that made the Fania All Stars not only unique in Latin music, but a real model of artistic cooperation that other genres could certainly share! Jazzy soul & straight up hip hop from Guru's pioneering Jazzmatazz series – cuts culled from Volumes 1-3 – the Virgin years! Not only did Guru do an admirable job of inspiring a host of jazz legends and contemporary players to get involved, Jazzmatazz also proved to be an excellent platform for singers in the emerging neo soul scene of the 90s – from Lonnie Liston Smith, Ramsey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, Donald Byrd and many more from the jazz world, to Mica Paris, Angie Stone, Kelis, N'Dea Davenport and others on the soul side – plus the Roots and Bahamadia representing hip hop. RCA, 1973. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark set from The Hues Corporation – and a record that's really poised at the crossroads of 70s soul! The group are probably best known for the super-huge hit "Rock The Boat" – a tune that bubbled under in discos for months, then became one of the first mainstream examples of the new groove on radio – but the trio actually have a much deeper vibe overall, with a richness that comes through strongly on this full length set – at a quality that links them to other hip LA groups of the period, like Friends Of Distinction. Like Friends, the Hues Corporation mix male and female vocals in equal doses – creating this harmonic interplay and vocal texture that's completely sublime – set up nicely by their own arrangements on vocals, then pushed even further by backings from Gene Page, Tom Sellers, and Perry Botkin Jr. Titles include the hits "Freedom For The Stallion" and "Rock The Boat" – plus "The Family", "Go To The Poet", "Salvation Lady", "Live A Lie", and "Miracle Maker (Sweet Soul Shaker)". The album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Tiger Lily/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $5.99 11.98
An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Apart from the amazing cut "Miracles", this one includes loads of gems like "Rockin' On My Porch", "Shake Her Loose", "(Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends", and "Boy, You're Dynamite"! CD

Rare work as a leader from drummer Osie Johnson – two sessions recorded during the heyday of his career, when he was appearing as a sideman on countless other albums! The style here is similar to some of Johnson's other session work – particularly his contributions to the labels RCA and Bethlehem – as most of the numbers are relatively tightly arranged, and given a playful, slightly modern spin that usually features a fair bit of interplay between the horns in the group. Players vary here – both between the albums, and the tracks on each set – and key musicians include Frank Wess, Thad Jones, Ernie Wilkins, Dick Katz, and Benny Powell. Gladys Knight's last album for Motown subsidiary SOUL – a collection of work from a variety of different sessions, put together to compete with her shift to Buddah Records in the mid 70s! The set features a range of numbers, often in a mode that's a bit more uptempo and righteous than some of the mellower Gladys Knight work that was dominating her hits at the time – almost as if they'd been holding back on this stuff, to let her develop more of a southern soul ballad identity. Arrangements are by Paul Riser, David Van DePitte, and Robert White – and often show a bit of the growing 70s dancefloor sensibility creeping into Motown during the time. Gladys' vocals are still plenty real soul – soaring out over the tracks – and titles include "In The Middle Of The Road", "Come Together", "All I Need Is A Miracle", "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", and "Can You Give Me Love With A Guarantee". Leaf (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
A very different album than the previous effort from drummer/percussionist Saratha Korwar – a lot more political, as you might guess from the title – and a set that has the London musician working with performers from the hip hop scenes in Mumbai and New Delhi! Most of the tunes have a soaring, majestic quality – a similar blend of jazz and global elements that we've heard in Korwar's music – but the additional of lyrics on most numbers really transforms the whole thing, and uses Korwar's strong sonic sensibilities as the backdrop for some very powerful global messages! MCs include Trap Poju, MIrande, Zia Ahmed, Aditya Prakash, Deepak Unnikrishnan, MC Mawali, and Delhi Sultanate – and titles include "Mango", "City Of Words", "Bol", "Pravasis", "Good Ol Vilayati", "Coolie", and "Mumbay". M-Zee BandDoctor Rhythm ... LP
Mirage, 1981. Near Mint- ... $11.99
M-Zee is Michael Zager – or at least his initials – and the M-Zee Band is easily one of his best projects from back in the day! The set's got a funky groove that's much heavier than some of his other late 70s work – especially some of the more commercial disco efforts – and things are pretty lean throughout, with a real 80s groove focus on beats, basslines, and catchy keyboard bits! Vocals are surprisingly soulful, and wrapped around the rhythms nicely – and titles include "Street Beat", "Doctor Rhythm", "Bop Box", "Who's Funkin' Who", and "Fun House". LP, Vinyl record album

Paul McCartneyRam ... LP
Apple, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99
An early moment of genius from post-Beatles Paul McCartney – a solo set that's wonderfully diverse throughout – filled with the kinds of cool little twists and turns we loved in his late Beatles records, and in his 70s killers with Wings! There's a newly-emerging sweetness going on here – that great sound that started to emerge with the McCartney album – where Paul was a proud, put-together family guy – easily one of the most confident of his fab foursome, and able to bring an incredible amount of charm to just about any style he wanted to try! Some of the best cuts here are the mellower, more personal moments – still delivered with an amazing rock-solid sense of musicianship and production, too – and even the rockers, which might sound clunky in the hands of anyone else, manage to come off with a great deal of charm as well. Titles include the wonderfully playful "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" – plus "Too Many People", "Heart Of The Country", "Dear Boy", "Ram On", "The Back Seat Of My Car", and "Smile Away". LP, Vinyl record album
(Apple pressing. Cover has light wear, and a torn bottom corner.)

MelodiansRivers Of Babylon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Beverley's/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A seminal set from The Melodians – and a record titled after their classic single, which really helped lay the groundwork for the rise of righteous reggae in the 70s! The work here is a key bridge between the soul-inspired work of previous Jamaican trios, and some of the important roots acts to come – all produced by Leslie Kong with this gently-tripping groove that really fits the laidback harmonies of the duo! The whole set's great – and in addition to "Rivers Of Babylon", other tracks include "Sweet Sensation", "It Took A Miracle", "Oh Say Darling Say", "I Don't Care", "Lost My Love", "A Day Seems So Long", and "Though I'm Through With You". CD features 15 more bonus tracks – other Kong-produced singles, including "Too Young To Fall In Love", "Staircase Of Time", "Put It Down Children", "Sounds Of Babylon", "Come Ethiopians Come", and "When The Sun Goes Down". New MastersoundsNashville Session 2 ... CD
One Note (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
The New Mastersounds return to the sweet studio in Nashville that gave us the previous album – but this time around, they change things up a bit – by using a variety of different keyboards instead of their usual Hammond! The core rhythms are every bit as sharp as before – and full of fantastic work on guitar from the mighty Eddie Roberts – but the grooves have a stronger 70s funk sound than before, thanks to the use of Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer piano, and even a bit of Prophet 5! These guys never seem to dim their instrumental talents at all – and a tight instrumental set is a great reminder of all that's made them so wonderful for so many years. Tracks include "Miracles", "Pudding & Pie", "Flimsy", "Thermal Bad", "Yokacoka", and a fresh take on "Dusty Groove". (Thanks for that one, guys!) CD

Novos BaianosOs Anos Continental 1973/1974 (Novos Baianos FC/Novos Baianos) ... CD
Warner (Brazil), 1973/1974. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99
A pair of early albums from this great Brazilian group – packaged together in a single set! First up is Novos Baianos FC – a great 70s album by Os Novos Baianos – a wonderfully youthful group that was one of the bright spots in Brazilian music after the Tropicalia years. The band had a style that mixed folksy percussion with honest personal songwriting, plus occasional touches of elements gleaned from the larger influences in Brazilian rock at the time. The album has a sound that's a lot more intimate than later work, with some especially great work on guitar and bandolim, and great production on the band's vocals. Titles include "Sorrir E Cantar Como Bahia", "Dagmar", "Vagabundo Nao E Facil", "Cosmos E Damiao", "Com Qualquer Dois Mil Reis", and "Os Pingo Da Chuva". Next is the self-titled Novos Baianos from 1974 – rootsy samba and hipper 70s MPB influences – all filtered down into a really unique little groove! Back in these early years, Novos Baianos had an inventive sound that was really a standout in 70s Brazilian music – a sense of earnest, open-handed music making that was something of a legacy from the Tropicalia years – but one that also carried with it some of the more hippie-dippy influences in the Brazilian underground of the early 70s! The style here is a bit sparer and more acoustic than on some of the group's other records – often comprised from samba percussion and guitar, but occasionally augmented by more electric instrumentation, as well as some folkloric flute! Titles include "Reis Da Bola", "Isabel", "Bolado", "Miragem", "Fala Tamborim", "Ao Poeta", and "Eu Sou O Caso Deles". CD

Noel PointerPhantazia ... LP
Blue Note, 1977. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Sweet electric fusion from violinist Noel Pointer – a player so great, you'll forget that he's using an instrument you normally associate with sleepier music! Like others of the 70s generation, Pointer plays the violin in a way that's clearly heavily influenced by keyboards of the time – electric in amplification, and worked in a mode that uses the instrument to create waves of sound that flow out amongst the tighter fusion rhythms of the set. Dave Grusin arranged and produced the set – in his best lean soulful mode of the time – and other players include Earl Klugh, Ralph MacDonald, Steve Gadd, and Grusin himself. Titles include "Mirabella", "Night Song", "Living For The City", "Phantazia", and "Wafaring Stranger". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Arthur RussellWorld Of Arthur Russell (3LP set) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $29.99 31.99
Music beyond description – a unique blend of disco, funk, avant garde, and dub – the wonderful world of the late Arthur Russell! Russell was a bass player by trade, but he was schooled in both classical and Eastern music forms – and brought an incredibly fresh vision to his work in New York in the late 70s and early 80s. To some, Russell was a groundbreaking disco pioneer – with an offbeat production style and unique conception of rhythm. To others, Russell was a performance artist and avant garde musician – working in circles that included Phillip Glass, David Byrne, and Robert Wilson. This mix of modes was very much a part of the post-disco, post-punk sound of New York at the time – and nobody summarized it (or allowed it!) better than Russell himself. This excellent set from Soul Jazz is one of the first to truly give him his due – and it brings together a large amount of his disco-related projects, plus a few more introspective numbers cut under his own name. The sound is incredible – unlike anything you could categorize – especially on the Russell-titled numbers – and as always with Soul Jazz, the whole thing's beautifully packaged, with rich notes on the music and the person behind it! Titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Wax The Van" by Lola, "Is It All Over My Face (Larry Levan mix)" by Loose Joints, "In The Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Pop Your Funk" by Loose Joints, "Schoolbell/Treehouse (Walter Gibbons mix)" by Indian Ocean, and "Let's Go Swimming (Walter Gibbons mix)", "A Little Lost", "In The Light Of The Miracle", and "Keeping Up" by Arthur Russell himself! David SanchezCarib ... CD
Melaza/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
David Sanchez kicks off the album's liner notes with a great discussion on the African diaspora and its influence on music – one that's always been strongly felt in David's recordings, but which seems to come through even more strongly here! The record's definitely jazz, but borrows lots of rhythmic conceptions from around the globe – using a fair bit of percussion at the bottom of the sound, which is balanced nicely with strong, soulful tenor lines from Sanchez, waves of color on the guitar from Lage Lund, and a mix of piano and Fender Rhodes from Luis Perdomo! There's some especially great interplay between the angularity of the tenor and the warmer, rounder currents of the guitar – on titles that include "Madigra", "Wave Under Silk", "Mirage", "Fernando's Theme", "Canto", "Land Of The Hills", and "Iwa".
