Mind & Matter1514 Oliver Avenue (Basement) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.98
Brilliant early sounds from Jimmy Jam – rare late 70s material that has a very different sound than his slicker 80s work with Terry Lewis! The style here is a wonderful blend of sweet soul and righteous jazzy funk – a lot warmer than Jimmy's later beat-heavy style – and served up with loads of sweet keyboards alongside the soaring harmony vocals! Jimmy himself plays Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and other keys – but what we really love about the record is the vocals – these harmonies that are as fragile as New Jersey soul from the early part of the decade, but often turned towards more complicated cuts that have lots of jazzy riffing in the rhythms! The work's never been issued before, and is one of the greatest discoveries we've heard so far from the Numero Group – that's really saying a lot, given all their other releases. The vibe is almost like the Moments or Whatnauts recording for Black Jazz records – and titles include "I Don't Know Why", "My Love Is Like A Fire", "The Wonder Of It All", "No One Else Can Do It To Me Baby", "Virgin Lady", and "When You're Touching Me". BadfingerNo Dice (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Apple/Capitol, Early 70s. Used ... $7.99
Badfinger comes into their own on No Dice – with a few buzzing rockers this time out, a pretty huge step from the more easygoing pop of Magic Christian Music (sweet as that stuff is) – with harder hitting groovers that kind of predict some of more tuneful power pop to follow in Badfinger's wake, but showcasing some pretty intense emotion, too, on the classic "Without You" and other tracks. Titles include "I Can't Take It", "I Don't Mind", "Blodwyn", "Better Days", "It Had To Be Me", "Believe Me", "We're For The Dark", "No Matter What" and more. This Capitol pressing includes 5 bonus tracks "Get Down", "Friends Are Hard To Find", "Mean Mean Jemima", "Loving You", "I'll Be The One". CD

Jean CarneDon't Let It Go To Your Head – The Jean Carne Anthology ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A fantastic tribute to the great Jean Carne – a singer who started out in jazz, working with then-husband Doug Carn on spiritual sessions and drummer Norman Connors on his soulful sides of the 70s – then shifted over to the Philadelphia International label, where she really helped Philly soul find new direction moving into the 80s! Jean always brings all the sophistication of her roots into her music – making her way more than just another soul singer, and instead a vocalist with a great range of expression that has her opening up in just the right way, no matter what the setting. This excellent collection is filled with classics from her years on Philadelphia International, and also includes some rare 12" mixes and duets with other artists too. Titles include "Free Love", "No Laughing Matter", "Don't Let It Go To Your Head", "You Can't Come Back Now", "There's A Shortage Of Good Men", "Time Waits For No One", "Lonely Girl In A Cold Cold World", "Bet Your Lucky Star", We Got Some Catchin Up To Do", "When I Find You Love", "Was That All It Was (12" mix)", "What's On Your Mind (12" mix)", "Revelation/Infant Eyes", "Mystic Stranger", "Completeness", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" – plus "I'm Back For More" with Al Johnson, "Sweet & Wonderful" with Glenn Jones, "You Might Be Surprised" with Roy Ayers, "Love Is Beautiful" and "Dreams Of Tomorrow" with Dexter Wansel, "Keep In Touch" and "The Look Of Love" with Grover Washington, and "Dindi", "Love's In Your Corner", and "Valentine Love" with Norman Connors. Facts Of LifeJust The Facts – The Complete Kayvette Recordings 1975 to 1978 ... CD
Kayvette/Southbound (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 21.99
A treasure trove of southern soul – the complete Kayvette Recordings of Facts Of Life – a really unique trio with a great talent for mellow songs about life, love, and messing around! The work was recorded in Muscle Shoals by Brad Shapiro and Millie Jackson – and it's often got the best qualities of Millie's own mellow work – not the upbeat tracks, but the laidback ones in which she tells a little story with her lyrics. But given the trio nature of the group, there's often some great interplay between the male and female vocals – in a way that reminds us a lot of The Soul Children towards the end of their run at Stax – when they really matured a lot, and used the male/female group format to really expand on older styles of southern soul. Shapiro's production is tight, but never overdone – often letting the vocals cup through the most strongly, even on some cuts that augment the grooves a bit. The 2CD package features both albums by the group – Matter Of Fact and Sometimes – plus material from singles too. 23 tracks in all – including "Sometimes", "Uphill Peace Of Mind", "Caught In The Act Of Getting It On", "Bitter Woman", "Did He Make Love To You", "It's Only A Matter Of Time", "Dr Feelgood", "I'm Way Ahead Of You", "Do You Wanna Make Love", "If You Can Give You Can Get", "Love Is The Final Truth", and "What Would Your Mama Say". 4th ComingStrange Things – The Complete Works 1970 to 1974 ... CD
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A stunning batch of tracks from a very unusual LA group of the early 70s – a funk combo at the core, but one that was also equally comfortable with bits of psych and redneck rock as well! The music here was all recorded within a short span of years, and mostly issued on the small Alpha label as a handful of funky 45s – but the style is surprisingly spacious, and shows a strong sense of musicianship from the members of the group – so much so that they seem equally comfortable and right on top of their game, no matter what direction they choose to take! And don't think that this multi-style description means that these guys are too all over the map, because there's a really unified sense of soul that holds the whole thing together – so that when they get a bit rootsy, the result is country soul – or when they get a bit trippy, they hit some Funkadelic-styled sounds. The collection includes great notes on the setting that produced these tracks – penned by Egon, who put the set together with help from Malcolm Catto, DJ Shadow, and others. Titles include "Don't Let Him Take Away Your Mind", "Strange Things", "Heaven & Earth", "Take Time", "We Got Love", "Waterloo At Watergate", "Why Don't You Trust In Me", "Cruising Central Ave", "The Dead Don't Die Alive", and "You're My Precious Someone". ✨✧ Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsSoul Of A Woman (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99
The fantastic final album from Sharon Jones – a wonderfully deep talent who was taken from us all too soon! The set's maybe the ultimate setting for Sharon's incredible voice – as it features both her longtime core combo, the Dap-Kings – as well as additional backings from the Bushwick Philharmonic – a small ensemble of strings who really help elevate the music to classic status! If you're worried that the strings might soften the sound, the very first note of the record will put your mind at rest – as will the heavy drums that mark just about every track, and keep things hard and funky throughout. If anyone ever doubted that the Daptone label was our modern equivalent of Stax Records or Atlantic, this will certainly be the set to change their mind – and will also stand forever as a bittersweet reminder of all the greatness that Sharon Jones gave us over the years. Titles include "Searching For A New Day", "Rumors", "Matter Of Time", "Sail On", "Just Give Me Your Time", "Come & Be A Winner", "Call On God", and "These Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

We FiveThere Stands The Door – The Best Of We Five ... CD
A&M/Big Beat (UK), Mid/Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
60s folk and sunshine pop blended beautifully by the We Five – some of the best of their work for A&M, and a number of previously unreleased gems – the most satisfying compilation of their work we've ever come across! The We Five had a great way of combining some of the elements of the then booming folk rock idiom – male & female group harmonies, acoustic guitar and banjo in particular – with sweeter, hookier pop & rock. The vocal melodies are soaring and the hooks are killer, almost moving more towards The Association than, oh, The New Christy Minstrels – which certainly works for us! Totally great stuff. 22 tracks in all: "You Were On My Mind", "There Stands The Door", "You Let A Love Burn Out", "Love Me Not Tomorrow", "High Flying Bird", "If I Were All Alone", "The First Time", "It Realy Doesn't Matter", "Poet", "Past Asking", "What'cha Gonna Do", "The Thing I Like" and much more. VariousPurple Snow – Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound (4LPs with book) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4 LPs ... $56.99 84.98
The amazing prequel to the big wave of funk and soul that exploded from the Minneapolis scene at the end of the 70s – early sounds that really point the way towards later grooves from folks like Prince, Alexander O'Neal, Andre Cymone, and the team of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis! The massive package is one of the best-ever sets from the Numero Group – not just a brilliant collection of music, but a rich book-like presentation of this important time in the Twin Cities scene – with a huge booklet of notes, memories, and loads of vintage photos! The whole thing's like taking the quality of Numero's books and mixing it with the focus of their best compilations – and the heavy package is filled with loads and loads of gems that really re-map the whole rise to glory of some of the bigger names of the time. You'll hear sounds here by folks who later recorded under more famous labels, and other sublime cuts by groups who never fully got their due at the time – such as the wonderful Haze, a group we've always loved. Instrumentation is heavy on keyboards and bass – but used in ways that are often a bit warmer and more spontaneous than the electric funk of later Minneapolis years – tied in more strongly to the sound of the underground in other American cities. Titles include "Get It On" by Prophets Of Peace, "I Love You" by Herman Jones, "Taste Of Love" by Aura, "Expense" by Cohesion, "It's The Things That You Do" by Flyte Tyme, "Higher" by Lewis Connection, "I Do Love My Lady" by Haze, "Stone Lover" by Music Love & Funk, "Together" by Rockie Robbins, "Do You Dare" by Alexander O'Neal, "I've Got My Eyes On You" by The Girls, "Can You Deal With It" by Quiet Storm, "Should I Or Should I Not" by Sue Ann Carwell, "No One Else Can Do It To Me Baby" by Mind & Matter, and "Oh Lover" by Orville Shannon. ✨✧ Steely DanGaucho ... LP
MCA, 1980. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The last album in the classic run of Steely Dan – the final taste we'd have of the group until their surprising revival in the 90s! Gaucho picks up beautifully where Aja left off – warmly produced with a deep undercurrent of jazz, but perhaps a bit more down to earth feel at times too – not in the music, which is still up there in the heavens, but in some of the subject matter of the tunes, which almost takes us back to Royal Scam territory. Donald Fagan's vocals are wonderful throughout – a sound for which there's no referent or real description – and the balance in the instrumentation is near perfect on tunes that include "Babylon Sisters", "Hey Nineteen", "Time Out Of Mind", "My Rival", "Glamour Profession", and "Gaucho". I Ced has always been one hell of a collaborative artist – and this time around is no exception – as he opens the door to a fantastic array of guests, including Erik Rico, Moniquea, XL Middleton, Zackey Force Funk, Coultrain, and others – all of whom really make the whole album feel like a sweet contemporary soul party! The production is great – the kind of crisp, crackly sound we loved in I Ced's music right from the start – warmed up nicely by the guests, who make you feel like you've just dropped in on some late night studio jam, where some of the hippest cats on the scene are putting some new tracks together! ✨✧ Isley BrothersWinner Takes All ... CD
T Neck/Columbia, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A key album in the Isley Brothers "extended funk" mode of the 70s – a style in which the group approached nearly every tune by adding in a "part 2" in order to stretch out the groove! The style here is bass-heavy funk, but less of the sort that other groups were using at the time – because the Isleys still bring in plenty of soul to the mix, and resist popping the bass too much so that they still have plenty of space for the slinky vocals that always make their work so great. Most of the titles on the album have this extended approach, and titles include "I Wanna Be With You (parts 1 & 2)", "Liquid Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Winner Takes All", "Love Comes & Goes (parts 1 & 2)", "Let's Fall In Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Let Me In Your Life (parts 1 & 2)", "Life In The City (parts 1 & 2)", "Go For What You Know", and "Mind Over Matter (parts 1 & 2)". Epic, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An unlikely bit of southern funk! Richard Newell – aka King Biscuit Boy – is a white Canadian blues performer, and not the kind of guy we'd normally rate – but on this album, he's lucky enough to get production from Allen Toussaint, who goes full-out to make this a fine fine funky session! The record's got plenty of nice snapping bass and drum parts, very much in the tradition of Toussaint's own best funky work – and it really grooves along nicely with a heavy New Orleans sound. Titles include "The Bum Is Mine", "Mean Old Lady", "Mind Over Matter", "Lovers & Leapers", and "Deaf Dumb Crippled & Blind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Albert WashingtonSad & Lonely (180 gram pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Eastbound/Tidal Waves, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An obscure bit of heavy soul – and the only vocal album on the jazz-based Eastbound imprint of Detroit's legendary Westbound Records! Albert's a blues artist, and sings in a soulful electric style that's similar to some of the Stax work of Albert King – but which has a bit more of a funk twist to it. Albert's vocals are definitely in the bluesy mode, but the backing is more in a Memphis soul style, with hints of Stax production styles in the mix, and lots of swirling organ underneath the vocals, in that Hi Records mode from the early 70s. Titles include "You're Messing Up My Mind", "Mischievous", "Feel The Need", "I Can't Stand It No More", "No Matter What The Cost Might Be", and "My Mother's Prayer". A pretty solid soul album all the way through – with a strong deep soul feel that's different than the usual Westbound/Eastbound bag! LP, Vinyl record album

Sulu & ExcelsiorAntimatter Suite ... CD
Sulu & Excelsior, 2019. New Copy ... $4.99
A sweet set from Sulu & Excelsior – essentially the solo project of singer, rapper and trumpet player Steven "Sulu" Mallorca despite the sprawling sound and stylistic breadth – with influences that stretch from classic Motown, to late 60s funk, to live horn-backed hip hop and the skills to fuse them seamlessly! Sulu is a soulful singer and solid MC, often doing both in single rap, and handles most of the instrumentation – from the beats, to piano & keys, to horns, with guests on vocals, bass and guitar on just a handful of tunes – all the more impressive given the full band vibe you get here. lncludes "My Own Volition", "You Don't Mind Me Sayin' That", "Find Another" with Hiro-A-Key, "Antimatter", "Lady Libby", "Mad Dog Magic", "Equilibrium", "Space Suit", "Silver Fox", "Gratitude", "Hate To See You Go". Aum Fidelity, 2017. Used ... $9.99
Sharply angular sounds from this very hip trio – a record that really grabs you right at the start, then makes sure you're paying attention all the way through! The group's a particularly great setting for the piano of Matthew Shipp – who maybe reminds us here why we found him so great in the first place – and Whit Dickey's drums are sometimes a masterpiece of understatement, sometimes a bold force of power! Mat Maneri's viola might get lost in the mix, if things were balanced poorly – but there's some key contributions from his sliding sounds that really shape the performance. Titles include "Dark Matter", "Spaceship 9", "Space Strut", "Hyperspatial", "To A Lost Comerade", and "Turbulence". CD

Reprise/Omnivore, 1970. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A mindblowing set from Little Richard – a stunning comeback session from the start of the 70s – recorded at Muscle Shoals with a heavy funk component in the mix! Richard arranged and produced the record himself – and it's a beautiful illustration of his genius – hardly dimmed at this point in his career, and if anything, really redefined for a new generation – with some razor-sharp grooves that are perfect for his hard-wailing vocals! The title cut – "The Rill Thing" – is a monster 10 minute instrumental jam, with a heavy funk sound that you can't even begin to imagine – and the rest of the set is pretty amazing too, with tracks that include "Spreadin' Natta What's The Matter", "Freedom Blues", "Two Time Loser", "Somebody Saw You", "Lovesick Blues", and "Greenwood Mississippi". Includes four bonus tracks – "Shake A Hand", "I Saw Her Standing There (radio edit)", and two cool "radio spot" tracks! CD
