Milton BananaAos Amigos Tom, Chico E Vinicius ... CD
BMG (Brazil), Early 80s. Used ... $4.99
Smooth set of bossa cuts performed by this legendary Brazilian drummer – all of which were written by either Jobim, Chico Buarque, and Vinicius De Moraes. The sound is mellow and groovy, with a bit more of an electric touch than on his 60's LPs. Cuts include "Chega De Saudade", "Corcovado", "Ate O Fim", "O Morro Nao Tem Vez", "Wave", "Aqua De Beber", and "Regra Tres". CD

✨✧ Milton BananaSambas De Bossa ... CD
BMG (Brazil), 1970s/1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tight bossa tracks from one of Brazil's best drummers! We've got to admit, we're not exactly sure when this one's from. Although the copyright date says 1993, we think that this stuff's from the 70s from the production sound – and has been repackaged in a dateless compilation by RCA. The tracks are short little bossa ditties, and nice samba grooves – all with warm jazzy production. Milton's drums are as hot as they always are, with the kind of tight snare action that made his 60s recordings amongst some of the best bossa records of the time. Cuts include "Flor De Liz", "Meu Guri", "Tim Tim Por Tim Tim", "Mas Que Nada", and "La Vem A Baiana". CD

✨✧ Milton Banana TrioSamba E Isso ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
70s electric bossa grooves from the great bossa nova drummer Milton Banana! Milton's trio here has a bit of a fusiony sound, and they're augmented occasionally by some backing vocals, for a nice sweet soulful sound. Most of the tracks are medleys of older bossa tunes, played together in a tight crackling way. Titles include "Deus Tem Mais Pra Dar", "Conto Ate Dez", "O Surdo", "Te Segura", "Fuzue", and "Cavaqhinho Camarada". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miltinho (Milton Banana)Rhythm & The Sound Of Bossa Nova ... LP
Audio Fidelity/Honey Pie, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An excellent album of hard bossa cuts – played by drummer Antonio Da Souza, aka Miltinho – a player you might also know as Milton Banana, from a great run of Brazilian bossa jazz albums in the 60s! The Milton Banana Trio albums are all just done with piano and bass – but the approach here is a nice change – a group that features piano from Oscar Castro Neves, and some especially nice alto work from the great Leo Wright! The record's a prime example of the excellent style of Banana, Joao Gilberto's favorite drummer – in that it's extremely lively, and all over the kit, with sort of a melodic drumming component that's perfect for bossa nova. Titles include "Influencia Da Jazz", "Bossa Nova Blues", "O Apito No Samba", "Boato", and "Nao Faz Assim". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Milton BananaNo Balanco ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Later work from this bossa nova legend – still a master of the drum kit, and able to compress more than one song into a selection on most of the cuts within! The album still has the short, groovy quality of his classics – with a bit more keyboards in for piano – and titles include "Tim Tim Por Tim Tim", "Bolinha De Papel", "Mas Que Nada", and "A Fonte Secou". Way more than just an introduction – and instead, an amazing collection of bossa nova gems – 48 tracks pulled from the vaults of the legendary EMI/Odeon label – home to some of the best bossa work ever recorded in Brazil! The package is a treasure through and through – filled with key classics, overlooked gems, and the kind of weird and wonderful bossa numbers that never made it here to the US – but which have made digging for Brazilian records a favorite pastime of ours for decades. VariousBossa Nova At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Audio Fidelity/Liberation Hall, 1962. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
The legendary 1962 Bossa Nova concert at Carnegie Hall – and one of the first live recordings of the young bossa nova in all its glory! The concert is famous not only because it was a bit of a disaster (according to legend, just about nobody got paid!), but also because it brought together a huge amount of Brazilian talent on one stage, and premiered their music to a rabid US audience – very fresh at the time, as the big Verve boom of bossa recordings hadn't even started to take hold! The recording has a stunning live feel, and it preserves all the acoustics of Carnegie Hall, complete with lively crowd response. Oscar Castro Neves backs up most of the singers – including Sergio Ricardo, Carmen Costa, Carlos Lyra, Ana Lucia, and Chico Feitoso – and the LP has other instrumental performances by Joao Gilberto, Milton Banana, Roberto Menescal, Luiz Bonfa, and Sergio Mendes – all young bossa giants, really opening up here with their talents! The set features 15 tracks in all – and titles include "O Barquinho", "Influencia Do Jazz", "Outra Vez", "Zelao", "Nao Faz Assim", "Bossa Nova Em Nova York", and "Passarinho". CD

VariousJazz In Brazil ... LP
Honey Pie, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $24.99 26.99
A compilation that's way more than jazz – as it features cuts from a moment when Brazilian music was really coming into its own during the bossa nova generation, yet still had some ties to earlier styles as well – which means that in addition to the sorts of bossa tunes you'd expect, you'll also hear versions of songs by Horace Silver, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin! The selection of cuts is nice – and the record begins with some straighter jazz numbers that evolve into bossa – in a lineup that includes "Nana" by Os Cobras, "O Menino Desce O Morro" by Milton Banana, "Samba In The Perrotoquei" by Bola Sete, "I Got Rhythm" by Dick Farney, "Nica's Dream" by Sergio Mendes, "Love For Sale" by Rubens Bassini, "Copacabana" by Brazilian Jazz Quartet, "Esperanca" by Tamba Trio, "Influencia Do Jazz" by Ed Lincoln, and "O Morro Nao Tem Vez" by Joao Donato. Not the full story of Bossa Nova (for that, we might suggest the Trip To Brazil CD) – but a good compilation of rare tracks from the EMI/Odeon catalog, home to some of the best work ever recorded in Brazil! The set's got more than a few hits, but it also features a number of tunes that we've not had easy luck finding on CD – and at this price, the 20-track set's a great little set of bossa tunes whatever way you slice it! Titles include "Voce" by Milton Banana, "Samba De Verao" by Marcos Valle, "Corcovado" by Joyce with Gilson Peranzzetta, "Fotografia" by Sylvia Telles, "Copacabana" by Nana Caymmi, "Se Todas Fossem Iguais A Voce" by Lucio Alves, "O Barquinho" by Pery Riberio, "A Ra" by Joao Donato, "Vivo Sonhando" by Marcos Valle, "Ao Amigo Tom" by Doris Monteiro, "Meditacao" by Luiz Eca & Astor, "Amor Em Paz" by Dick Farney & Claudette Soares, "Samba De Uma Nota So" by Walter Wanderley, "Chega De Saudade" by Lelia Pinheiro, and "A Felicidade" by Agostinho Dos Santos. Funky funky Brazil! Mr. Bongo have done it again, and unleashed a killer set of rare funky Brazilian tracks – one that includes some of the most in-demand sample tracks from the old days, plus a few new remixes of other titles. Some of the cuts on the set used to be out on vinyl reissues back in the early 90s, but nearly all of them are hard to find now – and the selection of material is fantastic! The whole thing comes in a great package, with a total of 18 cuts in all. ✨✧ Joao DonatoBossa Muito Moderna ... LP
Polygram/Honey Pie, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A perfect summation of the dearly Joao Donato at his best – a record that's awash in amazing tones, colors, and phrasing – and one that really demonstrates the subtle genius that Donato brought to his work! The album's only a trio outing – with Milton Banana on drums – but there's an approach to the piano that's as complex as some larger arrangements – especially in the way that Joao effortlessly shuffles sonic elements with the sophistication you'd guess from the "modern" in the title – yet still manages to groove as you'd expect from the "bossa" as well! The approach is quite jazzy, but something else as well – and titles include "Rio", "Silk Stop", "Outra Vez", "Noa..Noa", "Sambolero", "O Morro Nao Tem Vez", "Sambongo", and "Indo Perdido". ✨✧ Baden PowellTristeza On Guitar ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1966. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Sadness on guitar – a perfect title for Baden Powell's work on his chosen instrument, especially the way he could bring a simple but emotive style to his music! Powell's work on guitar here is often quite spare, but beautifully handled – set up with rhythms by a small combo that includes Milton Banana on drums alongside added percussion, as well as some especially great flute from Copinha – and recorded with an echoey style that makes each new note resonate with tremendous strength. The overall groove is a bit more upbeat than some of Powell's other "on guitar" sessions for MPS – with a number of tracks that hit the livelier groove of his earlier Brazilian recordings. Titles include a great spare version of "Round Midnight", plus "O Astronauta", "Sarava", "Canto De Xango", "Canto De Ossanha", and "Som Do Carnival". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s PAUSA pressing, still sealed with a cutout hole and lightly bent corners.)

✨✧ Tempo TrioTempo Trio ... CD
London/Paradise Masters (Brazil), 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
An obscure bossa groover – but a great one! The Tempo Trio are one of the more obscure combos of a generation that included bigger names like the Milton Banana Trio, Bossa Tres, or Sambalanco Trio – but they're tremendous groovers with a really great sense of imagination, and a way of putting over a bossa tune that keeps our interest throughout! The legendary Pascoal Meirelles is in the combo on drums – really hitting the kit with a great deal of energy and a snapping sort of pulse on the cymbal and snare – and other members include the hard-handed Helvius Vilela on piano, and Paulo Horta on bass. Titles include "Boranda", "Curta Metragem", "Tudo De Voce", "Tema De Morro", "Menino Das Laranjas", "Terra De Ninguem", and "Carcara". CD

✨✧ Paul Winter & Carlos LyraSound Of Ipanema (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia/Sony (Japan), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
The sound of Ipanema in the 60s – served up here in a great partnership between American jazzman Paul Winter, and bossa composer Carlos Lyra! The album's an excellent bossa jazz session all the way through – with alto from Winter that's some of his sharpest on record in the 60s, and both guitar and vocals from Lyra – who's getting his American time in the spotlight here, in the way that Joao Gilberto got with Stan Getz! Yet this album's much more of a core bossa jazz combo set than the Getz/Gilberto records – with work from a quintet that includes Sergio Mendes on piano, Milton Banana on drums, and Sebatiao Neto on bass. Titles include "O Morro", "Voce E Eu", "Maria Ninguem", "De Quem Ama", "Lobo Bobo", and "Tem Do De Mim". CD
