DJ Don Cuco/IbeyiAgua Es Vida EP – Aleggua (Don Cuco remix)/Milan/Agua Es Vida ... 12-inch
Sonorama Discos, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 15.00
Something of a split single from Don Cuco – a set that features him remixing a track by Ibeyi on side one – really expanding on the warm vocals of the sister duo, with beats that are gentle and glowing, but which move nicely in a strong sort of Afro House mode! The flipside features two originals by Don – "Milan" which is a nicely moody club track, almost like the sort we used to love on early Nu Groove, with keyboards doing as much as the beats – and "Agua Es Vida", a track that does a nice job of mixing acoustic percussion samples with beats, all in a warm global sort of vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited to 500 copies.)

Five Corners QuintetHot Corner ... CD
Ricky Tick/Milan, 2008. Used ... $6.99
The long-awaited second album from The Five Corners Quintet – easily one of the greatest groups going on the global groove scene! As with their debut, the sound here is highly jazzy – played by a core combo that features Timo Lassy on reeds and Jukka Eskola on trumpet and flugelhorn – with supporting instrumentation from guests on vibes, timpani, strings, and even some steel guitar! The rhythms are slightly different this time around – a bit more focused on the dancefloor, although still with all the warmth of before – a quality that comes through especially strong on the album's two tracks that feature the great Mark Murphy on vocals! Female singer Okou also sings on one track – bringing in a bit of a soul vibe – and titles include "Hot Rod", "Waltz Up", "Interlope II", "Rich In Time", "Midnight In Trieste", "Skinny Dipping", and "Shake It". ✨✧ Buddy CollettePolyhedric ... LP
Jolly (Italy), 1961. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare European date from reedman Buddy Collette – and arguably one of his hippest albums ever! The set was recorded in Milan in 1961, and features a great lineup not only of Italian players, but which also includes the legendary Dusko Goykovich on trumpet – bringing in a nicely harder sound next to Buddy's work on flute and alto sax! Tracks have a well-arranged feel – the tighter structures of the Italian jazz scene of the time, but with sharper edges than Buddy's 50s work in LA – and given that Collette wrote nearly every number on the set, the album's a great discovery of his deep talents as a writer. In addition to Goykovich on trumpet, other musicians include Renato Sellani on piano, Dino Piana on trombone, Jimmy Pratt on drums, Gianni Basso on tenor, and Franco Cerri on guitar – and Armshed Shobey plays a bit of bongos on a few tracks, adding in a nicely exotic feel. Titles include "Skater For Mater", "Blues", "A Taste Of Fresh Air", "Pickford Street", "Paddy", and "Blues For Nicola". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeMilano Odia – La Polizia Non Puo Sparare (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
GDM (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $36.99
A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! Titles include "Rapimento", "Raptus Omicida", "Milano Odia La Polizi Non Puo Sparare", and "I Conti Ora Tornano". First-ever full issue of the score – as only a few cuts were only ever issued before on a single! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Archie SheppPhat Jam In Milano ... CD
Archie Ball (France), 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A cool contemporary project from the legendary Archie Shepp – and one that's got a lot more power than you'd expect from the title! Shepp works here with hip hop MC Napoleon Maddox – who brings in rhymes and a bit of beatbox to a performance from an excellent group that features Shepp on tenor and soprano sax, Oliver Lake on additional saxes, Joe Fonda on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums! Maddox comes off a lot better than you'd expect – very respectful, and adding in his words in a way that surprisingly augments Shepp's performance – giving it an intensity that's even different than some of Archie's few spoken passages. The tracks are also nice and long, and feature very open, soulful instrumental solos – and titles include "Casket", "Ill Biz", "The Life We Chose", and "Revolution" – plus a surprisingly great take on "Kashmir", a tune we didn't think would transform this well to a jazz mode. Ascent, 1982. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band plays tribute to their experiences on the European scene – with a well-written set of tracks recorded in big band format. Toshiko takes the lead on "Remembering Bud", a great tune dedicated to the pianist who first inspired her style – and the rest of the group performs equally well on tracks that include "Feast In Milano", "Relaxing At Zell Am See", and "Two Faces Of A Nation (parts 1 & 2)". Enrico IntraJazz In Fabbrica (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $38.99
A beautiful set of free-flowing work from Italian pianist Enrico Intra – a set that takes up the space of the entire record, yet maintains a sense of structure and mission throughout! There are freer passages in the work, but the set isn't completely free jazz overall – as Intra has a way of pacing things out and using some more spacious piano lines to bring everyone else into periods of regrouping – masterfully directing a quintet that includes Sergio Fanni on trumpet, Giancarlo Barigozzi on tenor and flute, Carlo Milano on bass, and Carlo Sola on drums! The scope of the work is wonderful, and the whole thing may well be one of the most striking albums we've ever heard from Intra – and that's saying a lot, given his other work. LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz QuartetDjango ... CD
Prestige/OJC, Mid 50s. Used ... $1.99
A stone classic from the Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded back when the group still featured Kenny Clarke in its membership, but already with some of the more serious, somber tones that would mark the combo's more famous years! Tracks here are from a variety of sessions in 1953, 1954, and 1955 – and trace an evolution of the MJQ style from initial more composed renditions of bop and modern jazz, to some of the more ambitious colors and tones of the Lewis-penned songbook. Titles include longish readings of "Django" and "La Ronde Suite", plus "Milano", "But Not For Me", "The Queen's Fancy", and "Delaunay's Dilemma". CD

✨✧ David MurrayShakill's Warrior ... CD
DIW/Columbia, 1991. Used ... $6.99
A surprisingly nice album of straight ahead tenor tracks from David Murray – playing here in a quartet with guitarist Stanley Franks, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and the great Don Pullen, who plays organ on the session! The album's not exactly in the classic soul jazz organ/tenor mode – but it is one of the few that Murray ever recorded, and it's quite interesting to hear him in this sort of a format. Plus, it was also one of the few recorded during that magic year of 1991 – when DIW really seemed to be getting things right, turning out some of the few truly genius albums in the history of the label. Titles include "Milano Strut", "Black February", "At The Cafe Central", "In The Spirit", and "High Priest". CD

Nino RotaRocco E I Suoi Fratelli (aka Rocco & His Brothers) ... CD
CAM (Italy), 1961. Used ... $12.99
A wonderful Nino Rota score – composed around the same time as his better-known work for Fellini, but done for a film directed by Luchino Visconti! There's a great mix of darkness and light in the music – some playful themes mixed with moodier moments – set to instrumentation that includes organ, bandoneon, violin, and sax – with occasional larger orchestrations as well, but always with that sense of intimacy that made Rota one of the first fresh composers on the European scene of the postwar years. If you dig Rota's work for Fellini, you'll find plenty here to love – on titles that include "Come Tu Vuoi", "Milano E Nadia", "Terra Lontana", "L'Amore Di Rocco", and "La Loro Storia". CD

Four Flies (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $39.99 42.99
Sunny grooves with a fantastic sound – music that echoes some of our favorite Italian soundtracks of the 60s and 70s – but most of it previously unreleased! The work here is from undertapped sources of the period – not some of the oft-compiled songs from the Italian soundtrack/sound library reissue scene of the past decade or two – but instead lots of fresh tracks that really throw open the gates – with strong quality tracks that are awash in lots of groovy elements! Music is both acoustic and electric, often with a fair bit of jazz or bossa nova influences – and in contrast to some sound library collections that go for the darker side of the spectrum, these tracks are all as warm as you might guess from the title. Tracks include "Don Milani" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Cugine Mie" by Nico Fidenco, "Gideon" by Alberto Baldan Bembo, "Camorra" by Manuel De Sica, "Pensiero D'Amore" by Mario Migliardi, "Gisposta A Tutto" by Gianni Marchetti, "Mondo Di Notte Oggi" by Gianni Oddi Gianni Dell'Orso, "Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura" by Carlo Pes, and "Verso La Droga" by Sandro Brugnolini. VariousGene Vincent Connection – 36 Roots & Covers Of Gene Vincent ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
A very cool collection of songs that might be considered to be "in orbit" of the great Gene Vincent – as these are either tunes that first inspired Gene to make his own recordings, or tracks that feature others taking on tunes from the Gene Vincent songbook – sometimes in styles that are very different than the raw sound of Gene's early material with the Blue Caps! The package is done in the beautiful Bear Family style – not just a fantastic selection of really obscure tunes, but detailed notes that follow the great look of the cover – and really illuminate all these lost nuggets from the glory days of rock and pop on the 45rpm single! There's a massive 36 tracks in all – and titles include "I'm Going Home" by The Spotnicks, "Right Here On Earth" by Johnny Rebb & His Rebels, "Anna Annabelle" by Les Chats Sauvage, "High Blood Pressure" by Huey Piano Smith, "Jump Back Honey Jump Back" by Hadda Brooks, "Woman Love" by Jimmy Johnson, "Rollin Danny" by Max K Lipscomb, "Five Days Five Days" by Vince Eager, "Red Blue Jeans & A Ponytail" by Freddie Franks, "Bluejean Bop" by Rock Ragge & His Four Comets, "Double Talkin Baby" by Bobby Milano, and "Big Fat Saturday Night" by Gene Princeton. ✨✧ VariousCuba – Music & Revolution Vol 1 – Culture Clash In Havana – Experiments In Latin Music 1975 to 1985 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A true revolution in Cuban music – not the familiar cha cha and pachanga modes of the pre-Castro years, but instead the huge wave of fresh styles and combinations that sprung up in the years to come! The tracks here aren't the kind of Cuban sounds that are locked in time by the all-star representations of the scene that circle widely – and instead, this music represents the younger, more experimental side of the scene – continually creating new styles and hybrids during the 70s and 80s, even at a time when most of the records weren't making it out to the world at large! Make no mistake, there's certainly elements of older Afro Latin rhythms, and Latin jazz instrumentation – but those are blended with new approaches to rhythm, instrumentation, and the overall role of the musicians and singers – on tracks that will really open up your ears. Gilles Peterson helped put the package together for Soul Jazz – and the whole thing's got the same hybrid hallmarks as his more recent recording forays in Havana – with cuts that include "Cancion Con Todos" by Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del Icaic, "Hast Las Cuantas" by Grupo Monumental, "Luna Wanestain" by Emiliano Salvador, "Te Quiero Porque Te Quiero" by Pablo Milanes, "Un Lamento Heco Cancion" by Los Reyes 73, "Dacapo" by Raul Gomez, "La Patica" by Paquito D'Rivera, "Rompe Cocorioco" by Juan Pablo Torres, "Mi Ritmo Caliente" by Juan Formell & Los Van Van, "Chequere Son" by Grupo Irakere, "El Son Del Campeon" by Conjunto Rubavana, and "Con Cadencia Y Con Dulzura" by Las D'Aida. ✨✧ Alessandro AlessandroniTrip Around The World ... LP
Stella/Saar Milano (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from one of the coolest Italian composers of all time – one of our go-to favorites for both soundtrack and sound library material! This set has Alessandro Alessandroni hitting some sweet 70s modes – funky at times, slinky and sexy at others – all with this fantastic ear for sound and space, with a quality level that really sets him apart – and which makes this totally obscure gem every bit as great as some of the key Italian cinematic classics from the period! Imagine – you're working in the very solitary space of a sound library, knowing that you're going to make a record that will never be for sale in the record racks – yet you completely bring your a-game to the proceedings. That's what makes Alessandroni such a giant – and we're sure you'll agree once you hear this music! The set features some great harmonica bits from Gianfranco Di Lelio, plus cool keyboards, guitar, and titles that include "My Sitar", "Seven Steps", "A Day In The Sun", "Oceano", "Everest", "Beach Party", "Summer Breeze", "Desert Inn", and "Love On The Sand".
