Miguel AngelSamba Na Onda ... CD
Equipe/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $9.99
An upbeat groover from 60s Brazil – a highly percussive album that features work by Wilson Das Neves and Rubens Bassini – plus some excellent chorus vocals too! The whole thing's maybe a bit more of a hard-driving example of the Brazilian harmony mode heard from bigger groups like Tamba Trio or Os Cariocas – served up with a very strong instrumental current that includes heavy piano from the leader, and some great guitar lines from Neco – who you might know from classic albums of his own! The mix is great, and very strong – and makes for an album that bristles with electricity on every groove – on titles that include "Lagrima Flor", "Telefone", "Da Bola", "Deixa Isso Pra La", "Isto E Samba", "Consolacao", "Roda De Samba", and "Bate A Palma". Gathering (Jesse Sharps)Leimert Park – Roots & Branches Of Los Angeles Jazz ... CD
Village, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A set that's way more than just the roots and branches of LA jazz – as it also points the way towards a fantastic future in the city's spiritual underground – uniting older and younger players, and unfurling the kind of energy that's really helped to transform things in the 21st Century, while also bringing to light the overlooked legacy of righteous jazz expression in the 70s! The large ensemble is headed by reedman Jesse Sharps – and the group is overflowing with talent, in a lineup that includes Kamasi Washington on tenor, Azar Lawrence on alto, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Ndugu Chancler on drums, Dwight Trible on vocals, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and Roberto Miranda on bass – stretching out on long songs that really mix the older spirit of the Nimbus Records scene with some of the new currents in Washington and Atwood Ferguson's creations. Poet Kamau Daaood speaks a bit on the set too – and titles include "Agony In The Garden", "Language Of Saxophones", "Peyote Song III", and "Desert Fairy Princess". CD
